  • OpenAI Operator AI agent can automate tasks like vacation planning

OpenAI is taking its ChatGPT chatbot to the next level, adding a feature to automate tasks like planning vacations, filling out forms, making restaurant reservations and ordering groceries.

The tool, announced on Thursday, is called Operator. OpenAI describes it as “an agent that can go to the web to perform tasks for you” and added that it’s trained to interact with “the buttons, menus, and text fields that people use daily” on the web.

It can also ask follow-up questions to further personalize the tasks it completes, such as login information for other websites. Users can take control of the screen at any time.

“Operator is one of our first agents, which are AIs capable of doing work for you independently,” OpenAI wrote in a blog post on Thursday. “You give it a task and it will execute it.”

For now, Operator is only available to ChatGPT Pro users. It can be accessed at Operator.ChatGPT.com. OpenAI said it eventually plans to expand to Plus, Team and Enterprise users and to integrate Operator into ChatGPT. The company also said it currently has trouble with some tasks, such as managing calendars and creating slideshows.

OpenAI, which is backed by Microsoft, said users can opt out of some of the company’s training data collection by turning off the “Improve the model for everyone” setting in ChatGPT, meaning data in Operator will not be used to train its models. The company also said users can delete all browsing data and log out of all sites “with one click” in the privacy section.

Operator directly competes with an earlier release from Anthropic, the Amazon-backed AI startup behind the Claude chatbot that was founded by ex-OpenAI research executives.

In October, Anthropic introduced “Computer Use,” a capability that allowed its AI agents to use computers like humans to complete complex tasks. Anthropic said it can interpret what’s on a computer screen, select buttons, enter text, navigate websites and execute tasks through any software and real-time internet browsing.

The tool can “use computers in basically the same way that we do,” Jared Kaplan, Anthropic’s chief science officer, told CNBC in an interview at the time. He said it can do tasks with “tens or even hundreds of steps.”

The generative AI market, which includes OpenAI and Anthropic as well as Google, Amazon, Microsoft and Meta, is predicted to top $1 trillion in revenue within a decade.

Google recently agreed to a new investment of more than $1 billion in Anthropic, a source familiar with the situation confirmed to CNBC this week. Anthropic is in late-stage talks to raise a funding round of $2 billion at a $60 billion valuation led by Lightspeed Venture Partners, CNBC reported earlier this month.

OpenAI’s latest announcement comes as the company pushes toward a potential future of artificial general intelligence. AGI is a vaguely defined benchmark referring to AI that equals or surpasses human intellect on a wide range of tasks. Experts are split on whether it’s attainable and how long it could take.

Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang, whose company provides training data to key AI players, said Thursday in an interview with CNBC that he defines AGI as “powerful AI systems that are able to use a computer just like you or I could.” He said it will likely take two to four years to reach that level of the technology.

Mathematical models play a crucial role in operations planning by providing a systematic approach to decision-making and optimizing resources. In this post, we will explore the basics of mathematical models in operations planning and how they can help businesses streamline their processes and improve efficiency.

First and foremost, what is a mathematical model? A mathematical model is a representation of a real-world system using mathematical equations and assumptions to analyze and predict outcomes. In the context of operations planning, mathematical models can be used to simulate different scenarios, identify bottlenecks, and optimize resource allocation.

There are various types of mathematical models that can be used in operations planning, such as linear programming, integer programming, and simulation models. Linear programming, for example, is a mathematical technique for determining the best way to allocate scarce resources to achieve a desired outcome. Integer programming, on the other hand, is used when decision variables are restricted to integer values, making it suitable for problems with discrete decision-making.

Simulation models, on the other hand, are used to model complex systems by simulating different scenarios and analyzing their outcomes. This type of model is particularly useful in operations planning for testing different strategies and forecasting potential outcomes.

Overall, mathematical models in operations planning provide a systematic and data-driven approach to decision-making, helping businesses optimize their processes, reduce costs, and improve efficiency. By understanding the basics of mathematical models and how they can be applied in operations planning, businesses can make more informed decisions and stay competitive in today’s fast-paced market. Stay tuned for more insights on how mathematical models can revolutionize operations planning!

  • Heat planning to suspend Jimmy Butler for two games, sources say

The Miami Heat are planning to suspend star guard Jimmy Butler for two games, sources told ESPN’s Shams Charania on Wednesday.

Butler missed a team flight Wednesday and had plans to join the Heat tonight, sources said. Now Miami is keeping him home from its two-game road trip.

Butler had just returned Friday from a seven-game team suspension for “multiple instances of conduct detrimental to the team.”

“Through his actions and statements, he has shown he no longer wants to be part of this team,” the Heat said in a statement addressing the first suspension. “Jimmy Butler and his representative have indicated that they wish to be traded, therefore, we will listen to offers.”

Sources told ESPN on Friday that the Heat would like to find a deal to accommodate Butler’s wishes to send him elsewhere, but to this point, a deal that satisfies what Miami is looking for — some combination of players that can help the Heat now, movable short-term salary, young players and draft capital — hasn’t materialized.

Butler is in the last guaranteed year of his contract; he has a player option worth more than $52 million for next season.

Information from ESPN’s Tim Bontemps and The Associated Press was used in this report.

According to sources, the Miami Heat are planning to suspend Jimmy Butler for two games due to conduct detrimental to the team. Butler, who has been a key player for the Heat this season, will reportedly sit out the next two games as a result of his actions.

The specifics of Butler’s conduct have not been disclosed, but it is clear that the team is taking a firm stance on the matter. This suspension could have significant implications for the Heat as they continue to push for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Fans and analysts are eagerly awaiting more information on the situation and how it will impact the team moving forward. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

  • Is India planning to take back 18,000 illegal immigrants from US? – Firstpost

India is hoping that its cooperation with the Trump administration will safeguard legal migration channels used by citizens to enter the US like student visas and the H-1B program

The Indian government is working with the new US administration under President Donald Trump to bring back 18,000 undocumented Indian immigrants from the country after the leader launched sweeping orders to deport illegal migrants.

According to a report by Bloomberg, the US and Indian governments have identified 18,000 Indian citizens living illegally in the country to be sent back home. Sources have told the publication that the figure can be much higher, although it is unclear how many more people can be added to the list since the number of
Indian illegal immigrants is not known.

Declaring illegal immigration a national emergency on the day of his inauguration, Trump ordered the Pentagon to provide support for border wall construction, detention space, and migrant transportation and empowered the secretary of Defense to send troops to the border as needed.

“One of my most important obligations is to protect the American people from the disastrous effects of unlawful mass migration and resettlement. My Administration will marshal all available resources and authorities to stop this unprecedented flood of illegal aliens into the United States,” Trump said.

India is hoping that its cooperation with the Trump administration will safeguard legal migration channels used by citizens to enter the US like student visas and the H-1B program.

Failure to address the issue of illegal US migrants could negatively impact India’s labour and mobility agreements with other nations, sources familiar with the matter told Bloomberg. Amid a domestic job shortage, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government has signed migration agreements in recent years with several countries, including Taiwan, Saudi Arabia, Japan, Israel, and others.

According to a Pew Research report of 2024, Indians (725,000) account for the third largest group of illegal immigrants in the US after Mexico and El Salvador.

Meanwhile, data from the US Customs and Border Protection show that the number of unauthorised Indian immigrants is rising in the country. Notably, illegal crossings have surged at the less-trafficked northern US border, where Indians make up nearly a quarter of all crossings and represent the largest group of unlawful migrants intercepted at that entry point.

In recent news, there have been reports suggesting that India is planning to take back 18,000 illegal immigrants from the United States. This move comes amid increasing tensions between the two countries over immigration policies.

It is said that Indian officials are in talks with their US counterparts to discuss the repatriation of these individuals who have been living in the US without proper documentation. This issue has been a point of contention between the two nations, with the US pushing for the deportation of these individuals and India facing pressure to accept them back.

While the details of the plan are still being worked out, this development raises questions about the complexities of immigration policies and the challenges faced by both countries in managing illegal immigration. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Pence Is Said to Be Planning to Attend Trump’s Inauguration

Former Vice President Mike Pence is planning to attend President-elect Donald J. Trump’s inauguration on Monday, according to two people with knowledge of the planning.

Mr. Pence was invited by the congressional committee overseeing the event, as is the custom for all former presidents and vice presidents, according to one of the people with knowledge of the planning.

Mr. Trump selected Senator JD Vance of Ohio, rather than Mr. Pence, as his running mate in July 2024.

It is unclear what impact, if any, the request by Mr. Trump to move his second swearing-in ceremony into the Capitol Rotunda will have on the seating arrangements for former presidents and vice presidents. Unlike the outdoor dais and the seating setup, the Capitol Rotunda only seats about 600 people.

A spokeswoman for Mr. Pence declined to discuss his plans. A spokeswoman working with the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies, which oversees the planning for the events, would not discuss Mr. Pence.

The former vice president was forced to escape a mob of pro-Trump supporters who descended on the Capitol during a joint session of Congress on Jan. 6, 2021, as he was presiding over the certification of President Biden’s Electoral College win. Some of them chanted, “Hang Mike Pence.”

Mr. Trump had pressed Mr. Pence to influence the outcome; Mr. Pence repeatedly said he’d researched it and didn’t have the power to do so. Their relationship was irreparably broken, and Mr. Pence ran against Mr. Trump for a brief time in the 2024 Republican primaries.

The two men saw each other recently at the funeral services for former President Jimmy Carter at the Washington National Cathedral, and exchanged a handshake.

It has been reported that Vice President Mike Pence is planning to attend President Donald Trump’s inauguration on January 20th, despite previous speculation that he may choose to skip the event.

This decision comes as a surprise to many, as tensions between Pence and Trump have been running high following the Capitol riot on January 6th, which led to the deaths of five people.

Pence’s attendance at the inauguration could be seen as a sign of unity within the Republican party, or as a strategic move to maintain his political standing within the party.

Regardless of his motives, Pence’s presence at the inauguration is sure to draw attention and speculation from both supporters and critics alike. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.

  • Snowstorm ices 3-day planning huddle in Beaufort set to address city’s hot-button issues

A winter storm that’s expected to bring bone-chilling temperatures and possibly snow to the Lowcountry has postponed a three-day planning retreat in Beaufort.

The city’s five elected council members and City Manager Scott Marshall and his staff had been scheduled to tackle some of the toughest issues facing the city of 14,000 on the Beaufort River from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday at the Beaufort County Black Chamber of Commerce, 711 Bladen St.

The retreat is held annually to set planning, building and spending priorities, Mayor Phil Cromer said. The sessions help the city come up with a game plan for the coming year, he said, and marching orders for city staff.

“I hope it’s a very open, robust free-flowing of ideas,” Cromer said.

But Marshall said later on Friday afternoon that the city had decided to postpone the retreat because of a looming storm.

The National Weather Service said Friday the storm will bring extreme cold to the region on Tuesday and Wednesday with lows in the lower 20s. Windchill values as low as 15 degrees are possible Wednesday, the Weather Service said.

While the chance of snow Tuesday night was listed at 70%, the amount of freezing precipitation the area may receive still was uncertain as of Friday afternoon.

A new date, time, and location for the retreat will be determined and communicated as soon as possible, the city said.

Prior to the decision to postpone the retreat, Cromer noted that the predicted snow and sleet might make transportation to the retreat meetings difficult for some — “even for me” — because South Carolina drivers don’t encounter ice- and snow-covered roads very often.

During the retreat — whenever it occurs — current and emerging capital needs across the growing city known for its historic neighborhoods will be a major discussion topic, including stormwater drainage systems, which are a continual challenge for a city susceptible to storms and flooding.

One goal of the retreat will be coming up with a list of priorities for capital projects, Cromer said.

One high-interest issue with the general public that will likely be discussed as well is the future of Waterfront Park, Cromer said.

Last April, the city learned that the concrete pilings that support the park and the seawall are in tough shape. Repairs or even replacement of that infrastructure, which lies below the water line, are necessary with the cost expected to be in the millions.

“I think on most people’s minds is, where are we headed with Waterfront Park?” Cromer said. “That’s a biggie.”

The City Council also will discuss revisions to the development code; hear from department heads and partners such as Dominion Energy and the Historic Beaufort Foundation; and issues that are important to individual council members.

Time will be set aside for public comment at the close of each day’s meeting, which also will be livestreamed on the city’s Facebook page.

The retreat will be facilitated by Bill Stipp, a Phoenix-area-based public sector consultant who specializes in strategic planning.

You can find the full agenda at cityofbeaufort.org.

Residents of Beaufort, brace yourselves for a snowstorm that is about to put a freeze on the city’s 3-day planning huddle. The anticipated storm has forced city officials to rethink their strategy and prioritize safety above all else.

The planning huddle, which was set to address Beaufort’s hot-button issues, such as housing affordability, transportation, and environmental sustainability, will now be postponed until further notice. The city’s top priority is to ensure the safety of its residents and employees during the impending snowstorm.

Despite the setback, city officials are determined to reschedule the planning huddle as soon as possible and continue their work on addressing the pressing issues facing Beaufort. In the meantime, residents are encouraged to stay informed about weather updates and take necessary precautions to stay safe during the storm.

Stay tuned for more updates on the rescheduled planning huddle and how Beaufort plans to tackle its hot-button issues in the coming days. Stay safe, Beaufort! #BeaufortSnowstorm #PlanningHuddle #SafetyFirst.

  • Miller planning on ‘being a Canuck’ amid trade report

J.T. Miller said he is trying to keep his focus on his next game for the Vancouver Canucks amid a report Saturday that a trade to the New York Rangers was imminent.

“I’m not getting into this,” the center said after having two assists in a 3-2 win against the Edmonton Oilers. “I’m planning on being a Canuck today, tomorrow. Whatever happens, happens. I’m focused on the next game.”

Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reported Saturday the Canucks were close to dealing Miller to New York and considered pulling him from the lineup against Edmonton, but the deal did not happen.

“I don’t know if there’s anything,” Miller said. “It’s just [trying] to focus on the game. It’s probably good you’re playing the Oilers tonight, and have a matchup assignment, try to keep me focused.”

Miller is in his sixth season with Vancouver after being traded by the Tampa Bay Lightning on June 22, 2019. He signed a seven-year, $56 million contract ($8 million average annual value) Sept. 2, 2022, with Vancouver after having — at the time — an NHL-career high 99 points (32 goals, 67 assists) in 2021-22. He had 103 points (37 goals, 66 assists) last season and has 31 points (eight goals, 23 assists) in 35 games this season.

He took a personal leave of absence Nov. 19 and returned Dec. 12 after missing 10 games. Along with his two assists Saturday, Miller won 18 of 23 face-offs (78.3 percent).

“I am playing tonight, and I really would appreciate if we just stayed away from the reasons why I wasn’t here,” Miller said upon his return. “I’m not going to dive into the reasons why I wasn’t here the last three, four weeks. So, I’m here with the team, and I am ready to look forward to what’s going to happen in the future, not necessarily what has happened in the past.”

The 31-year-old began his NHL career with the Rangers after being selected by New York in the first round (No. 15) of the 2011 NHL Draft. He played six seasons with New York that included a trip to the Stanley Cup Final in 2014. He was traded to Tampa Bay on Feb. 26, 2018, as part of New York’s rebuild.

Canucks captain Quinn Hughes said he was aware of the rumors swirling around Miller.

“I think that’s part of my job — to be aware of things like that and just have a good feel for what’s going on,” the defenseman said. “But through everything, I thought everyone played amazing, and especially ‘Millsy.’ I thought the way he played against that line (Connor McDavid, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Zach Hyman), especially in the third, and he’s really competitive. He’s a gamer, so it’s nice to see.

“Over the last bunch of years, six years, he’s a guy that’s always going to compete, show up, a lot of passion, a lot of care. And you know when McDavid, (Leon) Draisaitl, two of the best three players in the world are in town, he’s going to be ready to go, and he wants that challenge, and he’s up for it, as you saw tonight.”

The Canucks (20-15-10) are one point behind the Calgary Flames for the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Western Conference.

The Rangers (22-20-3) are three points out of the second wild card in the East. They have already made two significant trades this season, sending captain Jacob Trouba to the Anaheim Ducks and forward Kaapo Kakko, the No. 2 pick in the 2019 NHL Draft, to the Seattle Kraken.

When asked Saturday if it’s harder to focus on his game, Miller said, “I don’t really know what to say, to be honest. I don’t have a good answer for you. I’m just trying to focus on game to game, so it’s boring, but it’s true.”
