  • Sharks have ‘played a little better than our record,’ GM says


    The Sharks’ average age is 27.91, making them the ninth-youngest team in the NHL. Grier signed veteran free agent forwards Tyler Toffoli, 32, and Alexander Wennberg, 30, to help mentor younger players such as Celebrini.

    Toffoli has 31 points (17 goals, 14 assists) in 50 games; Wennberg has 23 points (eight goals, 15 assists) in 52 games.

    “I think the veterans have done a good job of keeping the group together,” Grier said. “They are a lot of the guys setting an example. I think they also feed off the energy of the young guys. I think Mack and Will [Smith] come in every day, and [Fabian] Zetterlund and [William] Eklund, they come in and they work. For young kids, they’ve been able to kind of put losses behind them and show up and be ready to work and have fun.

    “As an older player, I think it’s almost contagious to have some of that exuberance of someone who’s not, you know, 29-, 30-years-old and been beaten down by the League, and maybe not guys take for granted being in NHL. But these young kids, every day, it’s like Christmas for them. They wake up, they’re excited to come to the rink and be in the League. It’s worn off on our group. It’s a positive for sure.”

    Despite being last in the League standings, Grier said he’s pleased with 37-year-old Ryan Warsfosky, who is in his first season as coach after being an assistant the previous two seasons.

    “I think Warsofsky has done a really good job, I think his staff’s doing a good job,” Grier said. “I think from right away from Day 1 in camp, I think you guys saw the up-tempo of the pace and pushing guys to work and give more. I think he holds these guys to a standard of competitiveness and work ethic. He’s also installed some structure in a system that the guys are trying to grow into and play. He’s been good. I think he’s done a good job.

    “We’re a young team, and we have young players playing key moments and a lot of minutes. I think he’s done a good job communicating with those guys and helping develop them and, at the same time, making sure that the veterans and the older guys feel valued and important.”

    Warsofsky also coached four seasons in the American Hockey League prior to his arrival with the Sharks. He won the Calder Cup as an assistant with Charlotte in 2019, then with Chicago as head coach in 2022.

    “I think I’ve grown a lot,” Warsofsky said. “I’ve got more experience in the 53 games now of what the expectation is in our group each and every night. I’ve grown with living with some results, which can be extremely frustrating, especially when we’re in hockey games.

    “[I’m] learning how hard it is to win this league. It’s something that our group is learning, [and] myself is learning.”

    Kohli’s last Ranji Trophy appearance came way back in 2012. He played the match for Delhi against Uttar Pradesh in Ghaziabad. In this particular game, the right-hander scored 14 runs off 19 balls in the first innings.

    In the second innings, Kohli faced a total of 65 balls and scored 43 runs. On both occasions, the former India captain lost his wicket to Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

    It is interesting to note that Kohli’s last Ranji Trophy match in 2012 also featured current head coach Gautam Gambhir, then Delhi captain Virender Sehwag, Ashish Nehra, and Ishant Sharma.

    In the match, Delhi scored 235 runs in the first innings and conceded a lead of 168 runs as Uttar Pradesh piled on 403 runs. Sehwag then registered a ton in the second innings to help Delhi score 322 runs.

    Uttar Pradesh were given a target of 155 runs, and the hosts comfortably chased down the total inside 40 overs with six wickets in hand.

    How has Kohli performed in the Ranji Trophy?

    Virat Kohli has played 41 matches for Delhi across all red-ball competitions, scoring 2891 runs in 64 innings at an average of 51.62. His highest score is 197.

    Kohli made his first-class debut in 2006 as he played for Delhi against Tamil Nadu at the Feroz Shah Kotla (now Arun Jaitley Stadium) in Delhi. The right-hander batted just once, scoring 10 runs before losing his wicket to Yo Mahesh.

    The match eventually ended in a draw. Shikhar Dhawan had also struck a century in this game while batting at No.3.

    The biggest defining moment in Virat Kohli’s early career came when he was playing for Delhi against Karnataka. During the match, Kohli’s father, Prem Kohli, passed away from a heart attack.

    South Carolina’s athletic department apologizes to LSU women’s basketball star Flau’jae Johnson and her family after the Gamecocks’ arena DJ played a song by her late father during South Carolina’s win against LSU on Friday.

    In a statement, South Carolina described the song choice as “inappropriate” and revealed the DJ, who is known as DJ T.O., has been suspended for the Gamecocks’ next home game. 

    “Her actions were understandably upsetting to Flau’Jae Johnson and her family and disrespectful to the LSU program and fans,” South Carolina said in a statement. “Conference rivalries and passionate fan bases should only serve to enhance sports, not be used to target individual players personally. We regret that it came to that in our venue after a game that saw both teams capture the level of national attention that women’s basketball has earned.”

    No. 2 South Carolina defeated No. 5 LSU in one of the most anticipated matchups of the regular season. After the game went final, DJ T.O. played an instrumental version of “Cut Friends,” which was a song by Johnson’s father, Jason, who was a rapper known by the name “Camoflauge” in the early 2000s.

    After Johnson called out DJ T.O., she did apologize for playing the song and stated it was “never my intent to disrespect anyone or offend anyone.”

    Johnson finished Friday’s game with 13 points on 6-of-18 shooting, while also tallying four rebounds and a pair of assists. LSU ended up shooting just 29.9% as a team in the loss.

    Johnson was an All-SEC Second Team selection for her performance during the 2023-24 season.

  • What’s changed since the Eagles and Commanders last played each other?


    30 days.

    That’s what separates the NFC Championship Game between the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders this Sunday from these two teams previously meeting back in Week 16.

    The Eagles lost that wild and weird battle due to the Commanders scoring 22 points in the fourth quarter to win in Landover, Maryland by a final score of 36 to 33.

    With a trip to Super Bowl LIX on the line, the Birds will be looking for a different result this time around. Perhaps an effort that looks a lot more similar (ideally even better) to the Eagles’ Week 11 home win over Washington.

    Let’s take a look at what’s changed since the Eagles’ last loss.

    • EAGLES INJURIES PRIOR TO THE GAME: The Eagles entered Week 16 with Britain Covey and Bryce Huff ruled out on the final injury report. Covey is now on injured reserve and Huff has played one defensive snap in two playoff games. The Eagles also notably had Dallas Goedert on injured reserve but he’s back now. Goedert saw five targets for five catches and 61 yards in the first Eagles-Commanders game.
    • EAGLES INJURIES DURING THE GAME: The big one was Jalen Hurts suffering a concussion due to a hit from Frankie Luvu. Hurts left the game with more than nine minutes remaining in the first quarter. Kenny Pickett took over for an injured Hurts and finished the game despite suffering broken ribs in the third quarter. Another big absence was not injury-related but rather involved C.J. Gardner-Johnson getting ejected early in the third quarter for a second unsportsmanlike penalty (BS). Nakobe Dean, Darius Slay, Josh Sweat, and Jordan Davis all got banged up and missed some snaps but finished the game. Dean’s injury caused him to miss Week 17, though.
    • EAGLES INJURIES SINCE THE GAME: Hurts’ knee was clearly bothering bothering him in the Eagles’ win over the Rams but there’s been no indication he won’t play against the Commanders. Of course, Hurts’ mobility might be limited. Quinyon Mitchell also got banged up against the Rams and it remains to be seen if he’ll be able to play against Washington. Mitchell sounded optimistic about his status but this week’s injury report bears monitoring. Dean is the Eagles’ most notable injured reserve addition since last playing the Commanders. Dean led the Eagles in total tackles back in Week 16.
    • COMMANDERS INJURIES PRIOR TO THE GAME: The Commanders’ active roster was entirely healthy for the last matchup. The only player Washington ruled out for Week 16 was two-time Pro Bowler Jonathan Allen, who is now back from injured reserve. Allen missed the first two Eagles-Commanders meetings this season. Austin Ekeler is also back from injured reserve. Ekeler hurt the Eagles in Week 11 as the Commanders’ leading receiver with eight catches for 89 yards.
    • COMMANDERS INJURIES DURING THE GAME: Starting right tackle Andrew Wylie, starting wide receiver Dyami Brown, and starting cornerback Marshon Lattimore all got banged up and missed snaps during the last game.
    • COMMANDERS INJURIES SINCE THE GAME: The big one is Commanders starting right guard Sam Cosmi suffering a season-ending ACL injury in the Divisional Round. Cosmi, who is Washington’s top-graded starting offensive lineman by Pro Football Focus, had some good battles with Jalen Carter. Big loss for them.
    • JAYDEN DANIELS ON FIRE: Daniels obviously played well against the Eagles in Week 16 but he also threw two interceptions in that game. Since that meeting: 74/114 (65% completion), 832 yards (7.3 yards per attempt), 7 TD, 1 INT, 103.4 passer rating … 49 rushes, 241 rushing yards. He’s been real sharp.
    • THE COMMANDERS’ DEFENSE HAS BEEN GETTABLE: Washington is allowing 380 yards per game since beating the Eagles. For perspective, the Carolina Panthers allowed the most yards per game in 2024 with 404.5. The Commanders are allowing 144.5 rushing yards per game during that stretch. Only the Panthers allowed more rushing yards per game in 2024. The Eagles had the top-two rushing performances against the Commanders this season with 228 yards in Week 11 and 211 in Week 16.
    • NEW EAGLES KICKOFF APPROACH: Braden Mann’s short kickoffs allowed the Commanders to start with really good field position on almost all of their drives in Week 16. Since then, the Eagles have gone back to Jake Elliott handling kickoff duty. Elliott is better at driving the ball through the end zone for touchbacks.
    • HOME SWEET HOME: The Eagles haven’t played on the road since losing to the Commanders; the Birds are set for a fifth straight home game. The Eagles haven’t been on a plane since returning to Philly from LA on November 24. The Commanders, meanwhile, are playing their fourth straight road game after flights to Dallas, Tampa, and Detroit. Washington hasn’t been fazed by travel to this point and the Eagles are obviously only a relatively short trip up I-95 … but perhaps the grind could finally catch up them?
    • REST DISADVANTAGE: Rest-wise, the Eagles and Commanders were on relatively equal footing the last time they played. The Eagles hosted a Week 15 game starting at 4:25 PM Eastern while the Commanders played a road game in New Orleans earlier that day at 1:00 PM Eastern. This time around, the Commanders have a one-day rest advantage since they beat the Detroit Lions on Saturday night and the Eagles played on Sunday afternoon.
    • REF ADVANTAGE: Last time, Shawn Smith’s crew made some questionable calls against the Eagles such as a weak flag on Milton Williams for roughing the passer and the CJGJ ejection. As outlined leading up to the Rams matchup, the Eagles’ opponents have gotten a more favorable whistle in Smith games. This time around, the Eagles might stand to benefit. They are 6-1 when this week’s referee, Shawn Hoculi, officiates their games.

    Marge Simpson is one of the most iconic TV moms. Over thirty-six seasons of The Simpsons, Marge hasn’t aged a day, and she hasn’t changed who she is. She’s loyal to her family and loves her dolt of a husband, Homer, but as traditional as that is, she’s also unique in her presentation. Not only does she have that bright yellow skin that most characters in The Simpsons possess, but she has a mound of blue hair atop her head, and perhaps most striking of all, a gravelly voice unlike anyone else. That voice comes from Julie Kavner, who also plays Marge’s mother and sisters as well, but it was almost a role that went to another actress with a unique voice. For a time, it looked like Marge Simpson might be played by Jennifer Tilly.

    Jennifer Tilly Nearly Became Marge Simpson

    Julie Kavner has been the voice of Marge Simpson since the beginning, back when The Simpsons started as a series of short films on The Tracey Ullman Show. However, the role nearly went to someone else. You might not know it, but Jennifer Tilly has a deep connection to The Simpsons. One of the co-creators of The Simpsons was Sam Simon. From 1984-1991, he was married to Jennifer Tilly. Following their divorce, the two stayed close, and after Simon sadly passed away from cancer in 2015, thirty percent of his future proceeds from the series has gone to Tilly.

    Tilly’s connection to The Simpsons doesn’t end there. She has done a guest role on the series before, but there was a moment when it actually looked like she’d be Marge. After the success of The Simpsons on The Tracey Ullman Show, it was developed to be its own series, but Julie Kavner wasn’t a lock to continue voicing Marge because she was thinking of moving to New York, and The Simpsons studios were in Los Angeles. In a 2021 interview on The Adam Carolla Show, Tilly said:

    “They were thinking they weren’t going to get Julie Kavner, so Sam gave me the script, and he goes, ‘Jennifer, I think you can do this.’ “I was walking around all week and going, ‘Homer, Homer, I don’t think that’s a good idea.’ And I wasn’t an impersonator, but I thought I was fabulous!”

    Kavner ended up not moving to New York, and to this very day, she is still the voice of Marge Simpson. It’s a role that has made her wildly rich and successful but has also allowed her to stay away from the spotlight. Kavner has appeared in many films and TV shows away from The Simpsons during her career, but unless you’re a Simpsons super fan, you probably wouldn’t know her if you passed her on the street. This is partially because she rarely does interviews, and when she does, she always refuses to do Marge’s voice. In a 1992 interview with The Los Angles Times, Kavner said, “Why destroy the illusion for children? I don’t want [Marge’s] voice to ever come out of this face. Ever.” She took that so seriously that when Kavner once was a guest on The Late Show with David Letterman, she’d only speak as Marge if she could turn away from the audience first.

    It’s hard to imagine anyone else other than Julie Kavner as Marge Simpson, with her gravelly voice making Marge often sound like she’s so exhausted with the chaos around her. Still, you have to wonder how Jennifer Tilly would have sounded as Marge. Tilly’s voice is the exact opposite of gravelly. Hers is higher, more airy and floaty, like Marilyn Monroe or a winded Betty Boop. Would this difference have made us see Marge in a different way, even if she was saying the exact same lines?

    Jennifer Tilly would be just fine after not landing The Simpsons gig. She’s had countless film and TV roles before really hitting it big in the mid to late 90s. After a critically acclaimed role in 1996’s Bound, she had a smaller but integral role in Jim Carrey‘s Liar Liar the next year. She became the voice of another prime-time animated character in 1999 when she began voicing Bonnie Swanson on Family Guy, a part she is still playing over a quarter of a century later.

    But it’s a role she landed in 1998 that horror fans will remember Tilly best for. In 1998, Tilly was cast as Tiffany Valentine, the girlfriend of Chucky (Brad Dourif), in Bride of Chucky. The character Tiffany has allowed Tilly to expand her acting and vocal range in follow-up films and the Chucky TV series because she doesn’t just play a human character but the doll version of Tiffany as well.

    In a 2019 interview with Dennis Miller on Larry King Now, Jennifer Tilly explained how she found Tiffany’s voice, which is even more breathless than her own. Because Tiffany the doll is hollow inside, Tilly tried to make her voice sound more hollow as well. Further films and the show have complicated the process because they’ve also gone meta, with Tiffany possessing the actress Jennifer Tilly, which means she has to sound like an off-kilter version of herself. Tilly joked, “For this I went to acting school. I have a BFA in Theater.” Jennifer Tilly didn’t become Marge Simpson, but maybe that was for the best. She’s far more suited to the complexities of Tiffany Valentine.

    Did you know that the iconic horror movie actress Sigourney Weaver was almost cast as Marge Simpson in “The Simpsons”?   • Austin Reaves Has Played At All-Star Level Since Taking On Primary Creator Role For Lakers


    When the Los Angeles Lakers traded away D’Angelo Russell to the Brooklyn Nets in exchange for Dorian Finney-Smith, it was a signal to guard Austin Reaves. Head coach JJ Redick was telling Reaves that he was ready to become a primary creator and initiator for an L.A. offense that has been in the top half of the league for much of the season.

    In the seven games prior to the deal, Reaves had been averaging 20.3 points, 5.9 rebounds and 7.4 assists a night on relatively strong shooting numbers. That gave the organization confidence that he could continue that on a larger scale. And in the seven games since the trade, he’s averaging 18.9 points and 8.6 assists. His shooting numbers have dipped slightly, but he is undoubtedly initiating well.

    Redick was asked how he feels Reaves is adjusting to the new role and responding to the slightly decreased shooting numbers, giving high praise for his point guard.

    “Yeah, I think, I don’t know if you did, but I know someone asked me a similar question when this whole thing first started. Might have been Dan. Just about the turnovers and kind of living with that but also finding the balance. You have to give him his daring. He has a daring mentality. You have to give a little bit on that and allow him to live in that space. I think when he’s played the right way, which is taking responsibility for what he is for this team, which is primary creator, and taken the right shot and made the right passes, I’ll be honest with you, he’s played at an All-Star level,” Redick said.

    “Like, he’s been that good. You don’t have stretches of 10, 12 games in an NBA season averaging 22, 8 and 6 on high efficiency without playing the right way. And he’s been that good for us.

    “It’s when the game kind of goes sideways. And this is what we talked about yesterday. The game going sideways. It’s like, you can’t get out of character. You can’t then decide, ‘I’m gonna take bad shots cause I haven’t had a shot in a while. I’m gonna make that pass. Our team needs you to play the right way every time.’ And when he’s done that, he’s been elite.”

    With Reaves being so new to this role, there are bound to be some mistakes and some games where things might get away from him. But there is no denying that he has shown the potential to excel as a primary creator.

    And it doesn’t seem like the Lakers are going away from him in that role any time soon.
