  • Oklahoma’s Brent Venables to call plays, adds 2 assistants

Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables will handle defensive playcalling responsibilities for the Sooners in 2025, he announced in a statement Saturday, assuming full control of the program’s defense for the first time since took over in late 2021.

Oklahoma has spent more than a month searching for its next defensive coordinator since former playcaller Zac Alley left for the same role at West Virginia on Dec. 29 after one season with the Sooners.

Venables’ announcement came as Oklahoma introduced a pair of defensive assistants Saturday — former Arkansas State defensive coordinator Nate Dreiling and former Clemson defensive playcaller Wes Goodwin.

“I have reflected on all facets of our program over the past several weeks,” Venables, entering his fourth season at Oklahoma, said in a statement. “Since I was hired as head coach, we have carefully assembled the defensive personnel and scheme that is suited to compete at the highest level, and we’ve built a deep and talented roster ready for the moment. I have high expectations for our program and will do everything in my power to achieve our goals for our players. To that end, I will take over defensive playcalling responsibilities for the 2025 season.”

Drieling, who will coach inside linebackers, was hired at Arkansas State last month after spending one season at Utah State, where he served as defensive coordinator and interim head coach last fall, leading the Aggies to a 4-8 finish after replacing Blake Anderson. Goodwin replaced Venables as Clemson’s defensive coordinator in 2022 and spent three seasons leading the Tigers defense before his firing following the 2025 campaign.

The pair of defensive minds follow first-year offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle as the latest additions to Venables’ staff this offseason.

“Adding Nate and Wes to our team, with their extensive and diverse experience, simply adds to my expectations and excitement for our defensive unit,” Venables said. “I’m energized by the prospect of getting back into playcalling and for the continued momentum I see us gaining with the strategic moves we’re making on both sides of the ball.”

A three-time national champion coordinator, Venables’ decision to return to playcalling marks the latest evolution in his approach since taking over the Sooners. Former Oklahoma defensive coordinator Ted Roof served as the program’s playcaller for the 2022 and 2023 seasons before Venables turned to Alley, 31, in 2024.

Oklahoma finished 19th nationally and fifth across the SEC in total defense (318.2 yards per game) this past season.

Oklahoma football fans, get ready for some exciting news! Former defensive coordinator Brent Venables is set to return to the Sooners program and will be calling plays on defense. In addition, Venables has added two new assistant coaches to his staff to help bolster the defense and continue Oklahoma’s tradition of dominance on that side of the ball.

With Venables at the helm, Oklahoma’s defense is sure to be in good hands. Known for his aggressive play-calling and ability to develop young talent, Venables has a proven track record of success in building strong defenses. His return to Oklahoma is sure to bring a renewed sense of energy and excitement to the program.

The addition of two new assistant coaches will also provide a boost to the defense. With fresh perspectives and new ideas, these coaches will help Venables implement his game plan and develop the players to reach their full potential.

Sooner Nation, get ready for an exciting season ahead as Oklahoma’s defense looks to make a statement under the leadership of Brent Venables and his new coaching staff. Let’s cheer on our Sooners as they strive for greatness on the gridiron! Boomer Sooner! #OUDNA #BoomerSooner

  • New Jaguars head coach Liam Coen will continue to call plays, mold offense around QB Trevor Lawrence

    liam-coen.jpg
    Getty Images

The Jacksonville Jaguars welcomed former Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen as their new head coach on Monday, and he confirmed he will maintain a key component of why he was hired as their head coach.

“Yes, we’ll absolutely be calling football plays,” Coen said when asked if he would be the team’s offensive play-caller.

Tampa Bay’s 2024 offense thrived under Coen: the Buccaneers had the league’s No. 4 scoring offense (29.5 points per game) and No. 3 total offense (399.6 yards per game). Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield, the 2018 NFL Draft’s top overall pick by the Cleveland Browns, produced career highs in completion percentage (71.4%), passing yards (4,500), passing yards per attempt (7.9), passing touchdowns (41) and passer rating (106.8) — all while bringing Coen’s playbook to life in 2024.

Now, Coen’s task is to maximize the potential of another first overall pick in the Jaguars’ Trevor Lawrence, who went No. 1 in the 2021 NFL Draft.

“How do we make Trevor Lawrence and this offense as dynamic and explosive as we can be? We’ve got to build it around him as well. We’ve got to make every part of this about improvement, and he will be a part of that process,” Coen said Monday. “He’s earned that right. I cannot respect his toughness and mentality and work ethic more than I do already from afar. This will all be about Trevor right now.”

Lawrence entered the NFL as one of the most heralded quarterback prospects in recent memory after leading the Clemson Tigers to consecutive national championship games in 2018 and 2019, including winning it all in 2018. The first task for Coen and whoever the Jaguars new general manger will be has to be simply keeping Lawrence upright by reinforcing his offensive line.

The 25-year-old Lawrence played a career-low 10 games in 2024 after suffering an AC joint sprain (shoulder) and a concussion. That was following a 2023 campaign in which he also battled both of those injuries as well as a high ankle sprain and a knee sprain.

The Jacksonville Jaguars made headlines this offseason with the hiring of new head coach Liam Coen, who will also be taking on the role of offensive play-caller for the team. Coen, who most recently served as the offensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams, is known for his innovative and aggressive play-calling style.

One of Coen’s main priorities will be to mold the offense around second-year quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who showed flashes of brilliance in his rookie season. Coen has already expressed his confidence in Lawrence’s abilities and has spoken about his excitement to work with the young quarterback.

Under Coen’s guidance, the Jaguars offense is expected to be dynamic and explosive, with an emphasis on spreading the ball around and keeping defenses off balance. Coen’s experience working with quarterbacks like Matthew Stafford in Los Angeles bodes well for Lawrence’s development and growth as a player.

Fans can expect to see a fast-paced and high-scoring offense under Coen’s leadership, as he looks to bring a new level of excitement and success to Jacksonville. With Lawrence at the helm and Coen calling the shots, the Jaguars offense is primed for a bright future.

  • ‘We haven’t won anything yet’ – Chelsea boss Bompastor plays it cool after derby victory

‘We haven’t won anything yet’ – Chelsea boss Bompastor plays it cool after derby victory

‘We haven’t won anything yet’ – Chelsea boss Bompastor plays it cool after derby victory

Chelsea head coach Sonia Bompastor said that her side haven’t won anything yet after they defeated Arsenal 1-0 in a Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon.

Guro Reiten netted the only goal of the game from the penalty spot in-front of a record crowd for a Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Stamford Bridge of 34,302.

The Blues are seven points clear in the title race with just 10 games to play. When speaking in the post-match press conference, head coach Bompastor expressed her satisfaction with the result but emphasised the need to maintain the right mentality for the rest of the season.

“I’m really pleased with the result but as you could see in the game today, it’s a really fine margin between Arsenal and us,” Bompastor said.

“It went our way which I’m really pleased with, but I think if you analyse the performance, it was a tough game and we didn’t control everything in the game. We were able to score which brought us a great result.

“We want to take it game-by-game, making sure we make the right decisions in every game to bring the great results, but we are far away yet to have won something. We haven’t won anything yet, so we need to keep the right mentality.”

Bompastor was pleased with the impact of her game-changers with Lauren James and Guro Reiten being particularly impressive.

She said “I think they have a lot of quality. This is where sometimes as a manager, you have some headaches because you need to decide the starting XI.

“They have the right mentality even if they were frustrated and that’s good. They just thought about the team first and when they were coming in, they had a big impact which is a really, really good thing for me to have in my squad.”

While Chelsea have a seven-point advantage on Manchester United at the top of the table, there are now 10 points between The Blues and London rivals Arsenal. Bompastor again emphasised the importance of keeping the right mentality between now and the end of the season.

She said “In terms of psychological elements, the win is huge, but there are a lot of games to be played. If we keep the right mentality, if we keep almost all the players available, we are in a good position but you never know what can happen in football.”

Chelsea return to Barclays Women’s Super League action on Sunday when they travel to Villa Park to face Aston Villa.

Chelsea boss Bompastor plays it cool after derby victory

After a thrilling victory in the derby against our rivals, Chelsea boss Bompastor is keeping a level head. Despite the impressive performance from her team, Bompastor is quick to remind everyone that they haven’t won anything yet.

In a post-match interview, Bompastor praised her players for their hard work and dedication but emphasized the importance of staying focused and not getting ahead of themselves. She knows that the season is long and there are still many challenges ahead.

While the derby victory is certainly a cause for celebration, Bompastor is already looking ahead to the next match and the next opportunity to prove themselves. She knows that complacency is the enemy of success and will not let her team rest on their laurels.

So, while the fans may be buzzing with excitement after the derby win, Bompastor is keeping her cool and reminding everyone that there is still work to be done. With her leadership and determination, Chelsea is sure to continue their success and reach even greater heights.

Nate Santos was named First Team Preseason All-Atlantic 10 after being named to the third team after last season.

    • Santos’ 6-for-6 shooting performance from deep against Lehigh is the second-best in D-I.  It is also the second-best ever at UD, behind Shawn Haugh’s 8-for-8 in 1993-94.

Posh Alexander was named Second Team Preseason All-Atlantic 10 and to the Preseason All-Defensive Team.  Alexander is a fifth-year transfer who already has 1,000 career points and 500 career assists (1,439 and 588 respectively).  The fourth recruit from New York City in Anthony Grant‘s tenure at UD, he led the Big East in steals in each of the last four seasons (three at St. John’s and one at Butler).

Enoch Cheeks was also named A-10 Preseason All-Defensive Team.  He led the team in steals (40), was second in blocked shots (21), and was third in rebounding (4.7) in his first season at UD after transferring from Robert Morris.  The Providence, R.I. native was the 2023-24 winner of UD’s Steve McElvene Award.  Cheeks was consistently assigned the opponents’ top perimeter player on defense.  In the 25 games (out of 33) where the Flyer foe’s top player was a guard or wing, that player was held under his average 17 times. He started in all 33 games and averaged 8.1 points per game (9.5 in A-10 play).

    • The Dayton roster includes five players who have earned all-conference recognition in their past – junior forward Nate Santos (Atlantic 10), junior Enoch Cheeks (Horizon League). junior Javon Bennett (Northeast Conference), redshirt junior Malachi Smith (Atlantic 10) and fifth-year senior Posh Alexander (Big East).

Amaël L’Etang was named the A-10 Rookie of the Week on Nov. 25.  He scored 11 points (4-6 FG) in 13 minutes against New Mexico State.

    • Cheeks is 13th in the A-10 in rebounding (6.5), fifth in steals (2.0), and eighth in 3-pt. FG% (.416, 37-89).  Of the top 15 A-10 rebounders, Cheeks is the shortest.

    • Santos is fifth in the Atlantic 10 in 3-pt. FG% (.433, 45-104).

    • Smith leads the A-10 in assists (6.0) and is third in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.8).  Nationally, he is tied for 22nd in assists per game.

Zed Key is eighth in FG% (.575, 61-104).  He is tied for 20th in D-I for most dunks (34).

    • As a team, Dayton leads the Atlantic 10 in FG% (.476, 527-1106) and 3-pt. FG% (.366, 159-436) and is second in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.57).   The Flyers are 53rd in Division I in FG% and 56th in 3-pt. FG%.

    • This is the Flyers’ 30th season in the Atlantic 10, and UD won its 300th A-10 game on Jan. 21 at Duquesne.

    • UD ranked 20th in average attendance in NCAA Division I last season, averaging a capacity crowd of 13,407 fans a game in 2023-24.  Of schools in the top 25 in attendance, only Kansas, Purdue, Michigan State and UConn also sold out every game of the season.

    • Dayton has already announced it has sold out every game for the upcoming 2024-25 season, including both exhibition games that have already been played.  This will be the fourth consecutive year UD has sold out every home game.  That streak is now 70 games.
