There are a few rules to trading, so you can’t trick other players into trading one of their full art cards for one of your twenty copies of Sizzlipede or send an entire binder over to another account.

    Here’s how trades work in Pokémon TCG Pocket and the rules behind trading.

    How to trade in Pokémon TCG Pocket

    Prior to trading, make sure your Pokémon TCG Pocket app is updated to the latest version. Go to the Pokémon TCG Pocket store page on either the App Store on iOS devices or Google Play store on Android devices and update it.

    To trade, head over to the “Social Hub” tab and click on the unlocked “Trade” button.

    Here is where you’ll find the trade menu — along with your Trade Tokens and Trade Stamina at the top of the screen. From the trade menu, you can either initiate a trade or respond to a trade offer, but first, you’ll need to follow the trading rules.

    Trade Tokens allow you to trade cards with other players in Pokémon TCG Pocket. Introducing on the eve of the Space-Time Smackdown expansion, Trade Tokens allow you to trade cards rated as three-diamond, four-diamond, or one-star rarity, though both you and the person you trade with will need to spend these tokens.

    How to recover Trade Stamina in Pokémon TCG Pocket

    Trade Stamina is a type of resource in Pokémon TCG Pocket that you need to exchange cards with other players. For reference, Polygon did a trade where we exchanged two three-diamond rarity Pokémon cards and it required one unit of Trade Stamina. There are two ways you can recover this stamina.

    The first way to recover Trade Stamina is simply to wait. It takes 24 hours for one unit of Trade Stamina to recover.

    The second way is to recover Trade Stamina using Trade Hourglasses. The information page for the currency in the game said Trade Hourglass are “obtainable as missions rewards and so forth.” As of this writing, the game’s shop did not have any way to purchase or exchange other currency for Trade Hourglasses. We also couldn’t find any quests where it was a reward. However, its description suggests it will eventually become a reward you can get for free doing other quests, just like other Hourglasses.

    You can always buy Trade Hourglasses using the purchasable in-game Poké Gold currency. (One Poké gold shortens the time you need to wait for the Trade Stamina by four hours.) That said, we don’t recommend this since it looks like it’s likely you will be able to earn it for free eventually.

    The creators of Pokémon TCG Pocket have issued a warning to all players not to tamper with game data or participate in real money trades, or risk getting their accounts banned. The crackdown comes right before card trading and a new Space-Time Smackdown set are added to the mobile hit.

    “We are aware that some players have engaged in data tampering, real money trading, and other behaviors that violate the Terms of Use,” read an in-game announcement that went out to all players on Monday. “If we confirm that a player has engaged in behavior that violates the Terms of Use, we will warn them, suspend their account, or take other action.”

    Pokémon TCG Pocket’s makers, Creatures Inc. and DeNA, are presumably trying to get ahead of what seems likely to be a surge in black market bartering for the game’s virtual cards once trading goes live on January 29. In theory, nothing would stop players from creating a third-party marketplace on a subreddit or Discord server where people who have tons of duplicates sell them to the highest bidders.

    That’s possibly one reason why the development team is restricting Pokémon TCG Pocket’s trading feature to one-star cards and below. The rarest cards, like specific gold variants with only a .053 percent chance of dropping, will remain locked to players accounts. They would still be able to sell entire accounts to one another, but that would sort of defeat the whole purpose of playing the game and collecting cards in the first place.

    Of course, all of this is violates Pokémon TCG Pocket’s rules, but that’s never been enough to completely stamp out cheating and other illicit practices in other economy-driven live-service games like Diablo IV. The proof will be in how many players Pokémon TCG Pocket potentially ends up banning for this sort of thing, and if it publicizes those numbers as has become common across lots of other online games.

    The Pokémon Diamond and Pearl-inspired set Space-Time Smackdown arrives this week, alongside the new trading feature, but those cards will also be excluded from trades at launch. Creatures Inc. and DeNA have said exchanging cards with friends will only be available for existing the Genetic Apex and Mythical Island sets at the moment.

  • Pokémon TCG Pocket Issues Warning Against Cheating Ahead of Trading Feature Launch


    Pokémon TCG Pocket is warning players of the consequences for cheating, just ahead of the expected release of in-game trading later this week.

    In an announcement pushed to the app yesterday, players were warned about violations of the Terms of Service that specifically relate to cheating:

    “We are aware that some players have engaged in data tampering, real money trading, and other behaviors that violate the Terms of Use,” reads the in-game notice. “If we confirm that a player has engaged in behavior that violates the Terms of Use, we will warn them, suspend their account, or take other action.”

    No further details were offered as to what behaviors, specifically, are being targeted. Players on r/PTCGP have been speculating that this warning is related to a few different behaviors. One of these, referred to as Wonder Pick Farming, is a practice where individuals mass-create new accounts to take advantage of the many free packs available for new players, and try to roll a “god pack,” or a super rare pack of cards with five very rare cards. Then, they offer their friend code to others for money, so that buyers can add them as friends and then see the “god pack” in the game’s Wonder Pick function and be guaranteed a very rare card.

    Another behavior speculated to be the target of a crackdown is a practice where players will grind accounts to level 50 with plenty of banked currency by participating in PvP battles over and over, using the game’s timeout function to stall games until the opponent concedes so they can win repeatedly.

    Beyond that, it’s possible that the warning was simply published because of the game’s upcoming trading feature release, which could potentially kickstart a new wave of inappropriate behavior, especially where “real money trading” is concerned. The trading feature, which was panned by fans upon announcement, allows players to trade cards of one star rarity and below with friends. Players have expressed frustration with both the rarity limit on trading, as well as the need to spend some sort of currency to make the trade happen in the first place.

    The feature is planned to go live later this week on January 29, alongside the new expansion Space-Time Smackdown.
