Not Expected To Pursue Nikola Vucevic Or Jakob Poeltl
The NBA trade deadline is getting closer and many continue to watch the Los Angeles Lakers in expectation of any potential moves the team could make. The team has been known to desire adding another big man since before the season started and Anthony Davis’ recent comments only furthered that belief that the Lakers are in the market for a center.
There have been multiple names mentioned as possibilities and two that would certainly make sense would be Chicago Bulls center Nikola Vucevic and Toronto Raptors big man Jakob Poeltl. Both would be great additions that would fit in well next to Davis on the Lakers, but as the deadline nears, it sounds as if neither will be joining the purple and gold.
According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the Lakers are not expected to pursue either Vucevic or Poeltl as the asking price and salaries for both are too high:
Yet league sources stressed over the weekend that the Lakers are not expected to join the hunt for either Vučević or Toronto’s Jakob Poeltl … while oft-suggested Lakers target Walter Kessler of the Utah Jazz is believed to as close to unavailable as it gets with less than 10 days to go before the trade deadline on Feb. 6 at 3 PM ET.
Adding Vučević would be very pricey for the Lakers beyond Chicago’s desire to extract a first-round pick in return; absorbing the $21.5 million owed to Vučević in 2025-26 is daunting financially for a team that projects to have Davis and LeBron James taking up two-thirds of next season’s salary cap and has strained to stay below the second apron this season.
Poeltl, meanwhile, is a similar case, with a $19.5 million salary looming in both 2025-26 and 2026-27 (player option) and the Raptors believed to be seeking an even richer return than Chicago has sought for Vučević to part with a player many teams believe that Toronto would prefer to keep.
As Stein noted, the financial implications play a role as taking on that kind of money for future seasons is something the Lakers would prefer not to do as well. But giving up a first-round pick, and perhaps even more in the case of Poeltl, along with the players needed to match salaries, seems to be too much for the Lakers.
If the Lakers are going to give up those first-round picks in a trade they want it to be a move that will make them a true championship contender. For as good as Vucevic and Poeltl are, it is difficult to argue that acquiring one of them on their own will do that for the Lakers.
LeBron James: Jarred Vanderbilt ‘didn’t miss a beat’ in Lakers return
It is unclear whether the Lakers will make a big acquisition before the trade deadline, but the team did welcome back one of its most important role players from injury in defensive ace Jarred Vanderbilt in their win over the Golden State Warriors.
Vanderbilt only played 12 minutes as he gets his conditioning back, but picked up three steals in that time and LeBron James said the forward ‘didn’t miss a beat’ in his return. LeBron added that the Lakers missed him and were happy to have him back in the lineup.

While the Los Angeles Lakers have been rumored to be in the market for a center to bolster their frontcourt, it appears that they are not expected to pursue Nikola Vucevic or Jakob Poeltl in the upcoming free agency period.Vucevic, who is coming off a strong season with the Chicago Bulls, is expected to command a high price tag in free agency, making it unlikely that the Lakers will be able to afford him. Additionally, Poeltl, who had a solid season with the San Antonio Spurs, is not seen as a top priority for the Lakers at this time.
Instead, the Lakers are expected to explore other options at the center position, potentially looking for a more cost-effective solution to fill their roster needs. While Vucevic and Poeltl are both talented players, it seems that the Lakers have other plans in mind for their frontcourt rotation.
Stay tuned for more updates on the Lakers’ free agency plans as the offseason approaches.

#Expected #Pursue #Nikola #Vucevic #Jakob #PoeltlInjury Notes: Lillard, B. Brown, Poeltl, Stewart, M. Robinson
Damian Lillard, who has missed the Bucks‘ past four games due to a calf issue and an illness, will return to action on Saturday against Chicago, reports NBA insider Chris Haynes (via Twitter).
Speaking to reporters after today’s shootaround, Lillard explained that the calf injury, which caused him to miss games last Friday and Saturday, was a “mild” strain and that the illness which sidelined him on Monday and Thursday hit him much harder, as Eric Nehm of The Athletic relays (via Twitter).
“I’ve never been that sick before in my entire life,” Lillard said. “I wasn’t throwing up, nothing. I just didn’t eat for two days. I didn’t eat at all. I didn’t get up, nothing. I was down. It was bad. Couple days ago, I tried to work out – the night before (Thursday’s) Brooklyn game, because I wanted to play against Brooklyn – but I mean, the whole time I was working out, it just kept making me cough, coughing up s–t. I got through the workout, but I couldn’t breathe good.
“… I lost a couple pounds. I mean, if you don’t eat for two days. And I was just trying to at least stay hydrated. … (But) I didn’t have no food in me, it was just all liquid, so obviously I dropped some weight.”
Here are a few more health updates from around the NBA:
- Raptors swingman Bruce Brown, who has been sidelined for the entire season while recovering from a knee procedure, is listed as questionable to make his season debut on Sunday vs. Atlanta, tweets Josh Lewenberg of TSN.ca. Starting center Jakob Poeltl, out since December 16 due to a bilateral groin strain, is among several other Toronto players who are questionable to play on Sunday, Lewenberg notes.
- Pistons center Isaiah Stewart is probable to suit up on Saturday vs. Denver after missing the team’s past four games due to a hyperextended left knee, tweets Hunter Patterson of The Athletic. Before getting injured in his 27th game of the season on Dec. 16, Stewart had appeared in each of Detroit’s first 26 contests, averaging 22.0 minutes per night.
- Although Mitchell Robinson still hasn’t been cleared for practice or even started sprinting at full speed, Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau is encouraged by the center’s rehab progress as he makes his way back from offseason ankle surgery, writes Stefan Bondy of The New York Post. “There’s still some benchmarks that he has to get through, but he’s done a terrific job,” Thibodeau said on Friday in Orlando. “He’s light, he’s lean, he’s worked extremely hard. So we just want to make sure we’re patient and let him work his way through it.” According to Thibodeau, the next phase for Robinson is full-speed running — after that, he’ll be cleared for practice and contact. However, the exact timeline for those steps is still unclear.
Injury Notes: Lillard, B. Brown, Poeltl, Stewart, M. RobinsonPortland Trail Blazers star Damian Lillard has been dealing with an abdominal injury that has kept him out of the lineup for several games. The team is hopeful that he will be able to return soon, but his status remains day-to-day.
Washington Wizards guard Bradley Beal Brown suffered a hamstring injury and is expected to miss at least a few weeks of action. The team will need to find a way to replace his scoring and playmaking abilities in his absence.
San Antonio Spurs center Jakob Poeltl has been dealing with a knee injury that has caused him to miss some time. The team is being cautious with his recovery and is hoping to have him back on the court soon.
Detroit Pistons forward Isaiah Stewart suffered an ankle injury in a recent game and is currently listed as day-to-day. The team will need to monitor his progress closely to determine when he will be able to return to action.
New York Knicks center Mitchell Robinson is dealing with a hand injury that has kept him out of the lineup for an extended period of time. The team is being cautious with his recovery and is hopeful that he will be able to return to action soon.
