Final: Syracuse 75, California 66
Syracuse snaps a three-game losing streak by putting together one of its most complete outings of the season in a win at California on Saturday night at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, California.
After leading by 13 points late in regulation, Cal cut the margin to 67-61 with a little more than a minute remaining, forcing the Orange to earn the win at the free throw line down the stretch.
The Orange weathered a couple of big Cal scoring runs in the second half to rebuild a double-digit lead and now catches a red-eye flight home on Sunday morning for a short turnaround before hosting No. 2 Duke on Wednesday night in the JMA Wireless Dome.
The Orange jumped out to a 9-0 lead to start the game and put the defensive clamps on Cal by bringing out a 2-3 zone. The defensive move helped limit Cal to less than 20% shooting from the floor in the first half and less than 30% for the game. Syracuse led by as many as 18 points about midway through the second half.
Second half
3:17 remaining: Syracuse 62, California 52
If the result holds, Syracuse will head home with a 10-12 record to face the lone unbeaten team in ACC play that is coming off a dominant 17-point victory against its arch rival (Duke led North Carolina by 30 points on Saturday).
FYI: The Blue Devils have not lost since before Thanksgiving.
Blacksher rattles home a 3, and the Bears are on an 11-0 run over the last 4-plus minutes.
Cal hanging around and is in the bonus, but the Bears commit a bad turnover on a lazy, misguided lob pass that Lampkin easily intercepts.
7:37 remaining: Syracuse 58, California 46
Good contested shot by McLeod at the rim to turn away Cal. The 7-foot-4 center has two points, three rebounds and a block in nine minutes of action.
Cal is still shooting just 26% from the floor for the game and is 4-for-25 from 3. The Orange is shooting 50% from the field and 7-for-12 (58%) from 3.
11:54 remaining: Syracuse 56, California 39
Syracuse turns it over out of the under-16 TV timeout. Starling curls off a screen and hits a short jumper from the elbow.
The Orange answers with a burst of a 7-0 run, including a 3 by Carlos to push the lead back to 14.
Starling then uses a screen up top by Lampkin to get downhill and finishes at the rim.
Starling has a team high 14 points but heads to the bench with just more than 12 minutes remaining in the second half.
Carlos gets the break going off a long missed 3 and finishes through contact for a three-point play.
15:43 remaining: Syracuse 45, California 36
Elijah Moore picks up where he left off in the first half with an early 3 before Cal rattles off seven straight points punctuated by a thunderous dunk in transition.
Jyare Davis with a sloppy entry pass to Lampkin and turns it over out of a timeout. It turns into an and-one opportunity for Cal at the other end. The Bears have trimmed the lead to 10 and have as many field goals in the first three minutes of the second half as they did in the first 20 minutes of the game.
Wilkinson hits a step-back 3 over Moore and all you can do is tip your cap to the shot-making ability of the freshman.
Starling answers with a much-needed bucket to snap a 10-0 Cal run.
Halftime: Syracuse 40, California 23
Syracuse has opened up a 17-point halftime lead behind an active, versatile defense, holding Cal to less than 20% shooting from the field.
Nine of the 10 Orange men who have checked into the game have scored, with JJ Starling and Lucas Taylor pacing the Orange with seven points apiece. Elijah Moore (six points) and Jyare Davis (six points; five rebounds) also aided the Orange effort in the first half.
Syracuse has turned to its 2-3 zone at moments in the first half, evening subbing in seldom-used backup center Naheem McLeod for four first-half minutes.
The zone and SU’s man-to-man defense has completely flummoxed Cal, holding the Bears to 4-for-23 shooting, including 2-for-14 from 3.
First half
Good second-effort by Davis to follow his miss off the glass and finish underneath.
Lampkin then sticks back a miss by Majstorovic.
Cal has 13 of its 23 points at the free throw line and it’s shooting sub-20% from the field.
Starling, who had missed his last six shots, ends the half with a 3.
3:46 remaining: Syracuse 33, California 17
Cal’s 7:15 field goal drought is, mercifully, over.
Taylor hits a 3 at the other end. Cal is 1-for-11 from beyond the arc. Taylor looks toward Moore on a back-door cut but Moore doesn’t appear to look for the pass and it’s a turnover for the Orange.
Davis absorbs contact down low for a lay-in. Then, off a turnover, Lampkin kicks it out to Moore for a corner 3 to open up a 14-point lead.
Syracuse now has its largest lead of the game off a short hook in the paint by Lampkin.
7:52 remaining: Syracuse 23, California 10
McLeod corrals a catch and finishes in the paint. Then, Carlos picks up his dribble in the lane but uses some crafty footwork to get a shot up and draw a foul. Syracuse leads, 18-9 as Cal has started 2-for-11 from the field.
Bell, who’s shooting 50% over his last eight games (17-for-34), scores five straight points, to open up a double-digit lead. The junior grew up about 30 minutes outside Berkeley.
The Bears are now 2-for-13 from the field and settling for a bunch of bad shots.
11:54 remaining: Syracuse 14, California 9
Davis is working hard on the glass to keep a possession alive and earns a trip to the free throw line. The Orange enters the game next-to-last in the 18-team league in free throw shooting and 3-point shooting.
Jovan Blacksher, an Oakland native who transferred in from Grand Canyon, hits two free throws, and the Orange has an 11-4 lead five minutes into the game.
Chris Bell, Jaquan Carlos, Petar Majstorovic and Kyle Cuffe Jr. await at the scorer’s table and will check in with 13:01 remaining in the half.
Carlos, coming off a perfect shooting performance at Stanford, hits the side of the backboard on his first perimeter shot of the evening.
Naheem McLeod with some rare minutes here in the first half.
Cal is 2-for-10 from the field, while the Orange is 5-for-14.
15:48 remaining: Syracuse 9, California 2
Elijah Moore hits a 3 to open up a 9-0 start before freshman Jeremiah Wilkinson hits a midrange jumper.
Moore tries an extra pass to Jyare Davis underneath the basket instead of taking it up off the feed from Lampkin and turns it over.
17:34 remaining: Syracuse 6, California 0
Syracuse opens up with a familiar starting five. JJ Starling gets the Orange on the board first with a strong take to the basket.
Cal starts 0-for-3 from 3. Starling then uses a screen from Eddie Lampkin at the top of the key and gets to the rack for a second lay-up before Lucas Taylor hits a pop shot in the paint.
Pregame
Update 9:55 p.m.: Sissoko will be available; Stojakovic is out, per Cal.
Welcome to February basketball, when bubble talk becomes more ubiquitous and teams attempt to peak by March.
The Orange has just 10 regular-season games remaining in what has been among its worst on record in the last 55 years.
Syracuse (9-12, 3-7 ACC) is barreling toward just its second losing season since 1968-69, when SU finished 9-16 in Roy Danforth’s first season.
The Golden Bears (11-10, 4-6) are five-point home favorites, but Saturday’s game represents a rare opportunity for a road win.
SU is 1-8 in games away from the JMA Wireless Dome, including an 0-3 mark on a neutral court in Brooklyn.
The Orange has to fly back to the East Coast late Saturday night and has a short turnaround before hosting No. 2 Duke on Wednesday night, a scheduling truth that drew criticism from assistant coach Allen Griffin earlier this week during a local radio interview.
Pregame updates on two Cal starters will be worth monitoring. Andrej Stojakovic, a 6-7 forward, and Mady Sissoko, a 6-9 center, both missed its 76-65 loss at SMU on Wednesday.
Syracuse has been playing without injured five-star freshman forward Donnie Freeman, who is sidelined indefinitely with a foot issue.
Syracuse basketball stays poised in 2nd half to snap 3-game losing streak at Cal: Final score, recapIn a thrilling matchup against Cal, Syracuse basketball showed their resilience and determination as they snapped a 3-game losing streak with a hard-fought victory on the road. The final score of the game was 78-72 in favor of the Orange.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair, with both teams trading baskets and playing tough defense. Cal managed to take a slim lead going into halftime, but Syracuse came out firing on all cylinders in the second half.
Led by star guard Buddy Boeheim, who finished with a game-high 25 points, the Orange turned up the intensity on both ends of the court. Their defense tightened up, forcing turnovers and contesting shots, while their offense found its rhythm, knocking down key shots and getting to the free-throw line.
Despite a late surge from Cal, Syracuse stayed poised and composed, making crucial plays down the stretch to secure the much-needed win. The victory was a testament to the team’s resilience and ability to overcome adversity.
With this win, Syracuse improves to 5-3 on the season and looks to build on this momentum as they head into conference play. The Orange will look to continue their winning ways and make a push for the postseason.

CNN
—
The music industry is coming together for disaster relief, once again.
Recording artists Lady Gaga, Stevie Wonder, Billie Eilish, Jelly Roll, John Mayer, Katy Perry, Pink, Dave Matthews and more are scheduled to participate in the FireAid benefit concert on Thursday to raise money for those impacted by the devastating Los Angeles wildfires.
Viewers around the world will be able to watch, stream and make contributions to FireAid on platforms including Apple Music, Apple TV, Max, Peacock, KTLA+, Netflix/Tudum, Paramount+, Prime Video and more, beginning at 6 p.m. PT/ 9 p.m. ET on Jan. 30. The concert will also be broadcast on 860 iHeartRadio radio stations.
It’s the latest example of a star-powered show that have historically found success raising money for people in need.
Here are a some other memorable benefits from the past:
Back in 1985, musicians Bob Geldof and Midge Ure organized a benefit concert to both raise money for and draw attention to a famine in Ethopia.
Legendary artists including David Bowie, Queen, Madonna, U2 and more performed at the event that was simultaneously held at Wembley Stadium in London and JFK Stadium in Philadelphia. Live Aid was broadcast across the globe and reportedly drew an estimated more than 1.8 billion viewers and raised more than $125 million.
It became known as one of the largest, most-watched concerts of all time.
Musicians are often the driving forces for such efforts.
Farm Aid also began in 1985, when Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp teamed up “to raise awareness about the loss of family farms and to raise funds to keep farm families on the land,” according to the organization.
“Dave Matthews joined the Farm Aid Board of Directors in 2001, and Margo Price joined in 2021. Farm Aid has raised nearly $80 million to promote a strong and resilient family farm system of agriculture,” it states on the site. “Farm Aid is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to build a vibrant, family farm-centered system of agriculture in America.”
Last year’s festival lineup featured artists Mavis Staples, Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats as well as Lukas Nelson with The Travelin’ McCourys along with mainstays Nelson, Young, Mellecamp, Matthews and Price.
The US suffered its worst terrorist attack in history on September 11, 2001.
America came together in both grief and solidarity and one of the results was the benefit concert titled, “America: A Tribute to Heroes.”
Performers from Céline Dion to Paul Simon took to stages in Los Angles, New York City and London for the patriotic event, which drew an audience of nearly 60 million viewers.
The event initially raised more than $150 million.
This event became more famous for a reason organizers did not plan.
In the wake of the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, a celebrity telethon was assembled to raise funds for organizations like the American Red Cross to help those affected.
It aired on NBC and partner networks and all appeared to be going well until Kanye West appeared with “SNL” alum Mike Meyers. West shared his thoughts about the response to the disaster, then went off script by declaring, “George Bush doesn’t care about Black people.”
The event reportedly raised more than $50 million, while “Shelter from the Storm: A Concert for the Gulf Coast” raised almost $100 million.
In the wake of devastating wildfires that have ravaged communities across the globe, FireAid is poised to join the ranks of historic benefit concerts that have made a tangible impact on those in need. With a lineup of world-renowned musicians and artists coming together to raise funds and awareness for wildfire relief efforts, FireAid promises to be a night to remember.Benefit concerts have a long history of bringing people together in times of crisis, from Live Aid in 1985 to Concert for Bangladesh in 1971. These events have not only raised millions of dollars for important causes, but have also helped to raise awareness and inspire action from the public.
FireAid aims to continue this tradition by not only providing financial support to those affected by wildfires, but also by shining a spotlight on the urgent need for climate action and sustainable land management practices. By bringing together musicians, activists, and community leaders, FireAid hopes to inspire change and create a more resilient world for future generations.
So mark your calendars and get ready to rock out for a good cause at FireAid – because together, we can make a difference.

Senate poised to approve Trump Transportation Department pick Sean Duffy
The Senate is scheduled to vote Tuesday to confirm President Donald Trump‘s pick to lead the Transportation Department, Sean Duffy.
The Senate voted on Monday to advance Duffy’s nomination by a margin of 97-0, and his confirmation is expected Tuesday.
Duffy, who previously represented Wisconsin’s 7th Congressional District, appeared before the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee in January and outlined his priorities for the Transportation Department, including aviation and highway safety, addressing the air traffic controller shortage and restoring trust in Boeing following several major scandals.

“No federal agency impacts Americans’ daily lives and loved ones like the Department of Transportation,” Duffy told lawmakers at his confirmation hearing on Jan. 15.
“We want the best and the brightest air traffic controllers. We must modernize our systems with cutting edge technologies. I’ll work with Congress and the FAA to restore global confidence in Boeing, and to ensure that our skies are safe,” he said.
Duffy also vowed to initiate work on rebuilding a portion of Interstate 40 near the North Carolina-Tennessee line shut down by extensive Hurricane Helene damage in September 2024.

“We’re going to fix it, and we’re going to fix it as fast as you can,” Trump said Friday. “It’s a massive amount of damage. FEMA has really let us down. Let the country down.”
Fox News Digital’s Charles Creitz contributed to this report.

Senate poised to confirm John Ratcliffe as CIA director
Washington — The Senate is poised to confirm John Ratcliffe as CIA director on Thursday as Republicans work to approve officials to the top posts in President Trump’s administration amid delays by Democrats.
Senate Democrats slowed Ratcliffe’s confirmation after his nomination advanced out of committee earlier this week, forcing procedural maneuvers to extend consideration of his nomination in recent days. Still, Ratcliffe’s nomination was advanced with wide margins in a 72-26 procedural vote Thursday morning.
Sen. John Barrasso, the Republican whip, celebrated that the Senate was poised to confirm Ratcliffe’s nomination, calling it “a win for our national security,” while noting that it “should have been done two days ago.”
“But Democrats unnecessarily delayed this important vote,” Barrasso continued. “John Ratcliffe is undeniably qualified for the job, he’s going to lead the CIA without bias, and with the safety of the American people being his priority.”
On Tuesday, Sen. Chris Murphy, a Connecticut Democrat, objected to a time agreement that would have allowed the Senate to quickly vote on Ratcliffe’s nomination, expressing “serious concerns” about Ratcliffe’s ability to distance himself from Mr. Trump’s political interests and urging that it wasn’t too much to ask for senators to have time to debate the nomination on the floor.

Ratcliffe, a former congressman from Texas, served as director of national intelligence in the final months of Mr. Trump’s first term. Mr. Trump had initially picked Ratcliffe to lead the nation’s spy agencies earlier in his first term, but withdrew his name amid questions about his qualifications for the role. Months later, Mr. Trump again nominated Ratcliffe, and the Senate confirmed him as director of national intelligence without any support from Democrats.
Testifying last week before the Senate Intelligence Committee, Ratcliffe said he’s devoted his professional life to national security “for roughly a quarter of a century.” And he promised that if confirmed, he would focus on “setting and communicating priorities and demanding relentless execution.”
He pledged that if was confirmed, the CIA would be rededicated to its intelligence-gathering mission.
“We will collect intelligence — especially human intelligence — in every corner of the globe, no matter how dark or difficult,” Ratcliffe said.
Ratcliffe served on the House Intelligence Committee and House Judiciary Committee during his time in Congress and was a staunch defender of Mr. Trump through his first impeachment and investigations into Russian election interference. Democrats criticized Ratcliffe for declassifying Russian intelligence alleging damaging information about members of their party during the 2016 race, intelligence that Ratcliffe acknowledged might not be true.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Thursday morning that he would “respectfully vote no” on Ratcliffe’s confirmation, saying he’s “deeply worried that Mr. Ratcliffe will be unable to stand up to people like Donald Trump.”
“I have my doubts that Mr. Ratcliffe will be able to hold firm,” Schumer added.
Despite the concern from Democrats, Ratcliffe is considered to be a more traditional choice than some of Mr. Trump’s other nominations after previously serving in a Senate-confirmed position. The Senate also generally prioritizes nominees serving in national security roles when a new administration begins.
Ratcliffe told the intelligence committee that the U.S. faces “what may be the most challenging national security environment in our nation’s history,” saying that the challenges “increase the necessity of confirming a CIA director who is prepared on Day 1 to take them head-on.”
contributed to this report.
The Senate is gearing up to confirm John Ratcliffe as the next director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Ratcliffe, a former congressman from Texas and staunch ally of President Trump, is expected to secure enough votes for confirmation in the coming days.Ratcliffe’s nomination has been met with mixed reactions from lawmakers, with Democrats raising concerns about his lack of intelligence experience and his close ties to the Trump administration. However, Republican senators have expressed confidence in Ratcliffe’s abilities and have indicated their support for his nomination.
If confirmed, Ratcliffe will be tasked with leading the CIA during a time of heightened global tensions and increasing threats to national security. His background in national security and his tenure on the House Intelligence Committee are expected to serve him well in this critical role.
Stay tuned for updates as the Senate moves forward with the confirmation process for John Ratcliffe as the next director of the CIA.

“Great teams, or teams that are able to overachieve, have been together for a while, and they’re able to find continuity. And I’m not really helping the coaches in that regard, if you’ve got to be honest.”
There’s one nugget of truth Brooklyn Nets General Manager Sean Marks dropped on Thursday in his exclusive sit-down with Brian Lewis of the New York Post. Marks has not helped his Brooklyn coaching staff maintain continuity, not with two significant trades more than a month ahead of the February 6 trade deadline. Whatever Marks’ master plan is, it’s clear that the Nets are in a state of transition.
And so, before the Nets won a tipsy contest against the Milwaukee Bucks on Thursday night, Marks held court twice. First with Lewis, then with Sarah Kustok of YES Network, an interview that aired during their pregame show…
In that one, Marks didn’t just stick to pleasantries. He thanked Dorian Finney-Smith and Shake Milton for their time in Brooklyn, but added that, “We were obviously having discussions with multiple teams, as teams do at this particular point in the year, so that’s not out of the ordinary. But the deal with the Lakers — probably a total of, I don’t know, half-a-day, 12 hours, something like that. From start to finish.”
He also praised Head Coach Jordi Fernández, sorta-kinda acknowledging the strain on a coaching staff attempting to win games in year one of a rebuild. When asked what the mindset of the team should be as we approach the deadline, Marks said: “‘You guys go compete, and you build a culture of going out there — a competitive culture.’ I’m never going to tell them to not do that. And I think that’s contagious. You know, the players have bought into that. They see how honest, how competitive [Fernández] is.”
The more intriguing questions for Brooklyn Nets fans, though, lie with Marks, rather than Fernandez. What are his plans moving forward?
Well, he didn’t quite spell ‘em out for us in his conversation with Lewis, but he did stress the importance of flexibility, which he’s done frequently. throughout his nine-year tenure as Nets General Manager. But now he’s really walking the walk, as Brooklyn is set to have nearly $70 million in cap space this summer, unheard of in the new CBA.
Lewis, ever the pro, asked Marks if there’s any specific star or moment in time he’s looking at to make a splash: “You have to be poised and position yourself to be able to have that opportunity. We’re going to give ourselves the best chance to do that. Now, on whom and when? That’s TBD.”
But whenever it comes time to make splashes in the trade market or free agency, Marks is confident Brooklyn can get it done, for a variety of reasons: “We’ve got these draft assets that, you can obviously pick them, you can trade them, you can move them around. We’ve got the room. And ultimately, we’ve got two things: We’ve got a market that’s going to be attractive, and we’ve got Joe [Tsai] as an owner, that’s proved that at the right time, he’ll go all-in, and he’s not afraid to say it and do it.”
In sum: The Brooklyn Nets have options, toting one of the league’s fattest stashes of draft capital, including four first-round picks this summer, and many more beyond that … a total of 31, 15 in the first, 16 in the second through 2031. So there’s trade ammo, there’s cap space, and yes, the Nets play in a destination city sure to pop up on plenty of wish-lists around the league.
“When we started out here eight years ago, the hand we were dealt, we were handcuffed. There was only a couple … really one way of building, whereas now we’ve got a few more,” Marks told Lewis.
We all have our own opinions on how the Brooklyn Nets should be building for the future, as does Sean Marks, though he’s certainly on the less vocal side about his preferences.
Marks and the rest of Brooklyn’s front office can’t get too far ahead of themselves though. There are looming decisions to make, no matter how simple they may seem at first blush. How interested in Cam Johnson are the Sacramento Kings, really? Is De’Aaron Fox long for that team? We know Jimmy Butler isn’t long for the Miami Heat, is Brooklyn an eventual landing spot? What about Cam Thomas’ upcoming restricted free agency? And how’s that 2025 NBA Draft looking anyway, what with Brooklyn’s four first-rounders and all?
So Marks spoke with the media in a pair of exclusive interviews on Thursday afternoon, and while he kept his cards close to the chest, he was pretty honest. The Brooklyn Nets do have a lot of options.
But they also means they have a lot of decisions to make.
Brooklyn Nets General Manager, Sean Marks, recently sat down to discuss the team’s recent moves and their future flexibility. In a candid interview, Marks emphasized the importance of being poised and strategic when it comes to building a successful team.Marks spoke on the Nets’ acquisition of star players such as Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving, stating that while these moves were exciting, it was crucial to maintain a long-term vision for the team. He highlighted the importance of balancing immediate success with future flexibility, ensuring that the team remains competitive for years to come.
When asked about the team’s upcoming free agency decisions, Marks stressed the need for careful consideration and patience. He emphasized the importance of making smart and calculated moves that will benefit the team in the long run, rather than simply chasing short-term success.
Overall, Marks expressed confidence in the direction of the Brooklyn Nets, noting that the team is well-positioned for success in the future. With a roster of talented players and a strong front office, Marks believes that the Nets are on the right track to becoming a championship contender in the near future.
As the NBA offseason continues, fans can expect the Brooklyn Nets to make strategic moves that will set them up for success in the coming seasons. With Sean Marks at the helm, the future looks bright for this up-and-coming team.
