  • Mum, 42, among eight Britons charged over ‘£9.5m Spanish holiday food poisoning scam’ | World | News

A British mum has been charged along with several others over an alledged scam that saw hotels pay out £9.5million on bogus food poisoning complaints. The scammers allegedly targeted hotels on the island of Majorca by encouraging tourists to make up food poisoning claims as part of a money-making racket. A mother from Essex has been charged with running the suspected along with seven other Britons.

Laura Joyce,42, from Essex was charged along with her brother Marc Cameron.

The siblings have been accused of being the ringleaders of a “profit-motivated organised gang”.

They are believed to have run the racket under the guise of a Spanish company called Elite Project Marketing SL.

Joyce and Cameron now face trial alongside five other Britons they are alleged to have recruited to entice holidaymakers into playing along in scam, along with the UK-based businessman who managed the process.

The suspected scammers have been accused of fraud and membership of a criminal gang.”

Those charged have been named as Ryan Bridges, Simon Robert Flanagan, Tegan Jewel Sumerlee, Susan Amanda Lyle, Nicola Marie Sanderson and Peter Carl Murphy.

A court ruling in Majorca read: “The gang specialised in obtaining the details of British tourists in all-inclusive hotels in Majorca it convinced, through a form they themselves elaborated, to falsely claim they had been ill during their stay in one of those hotels and be able to claim compensation in the UK.”

Police detectives believe the scammers’ activities cost three hotel groups around £9.5 million between 2016 and 2017.

A heavily pregnant Joyce was arrested in September 2017 before making a court appearance in May 2018.

Joyce’s lawyer Gabriel Llado has said his client confessed to handing over contact details of holidaymakers for payment but insisted this was done as part of a market research venture.

He denied that Joyce or any of the individuals she used to gather information from tourists had encouraged them to falsify food poisoning claims using chemist receipts.

    DON’T MISS:

He stated that Joyce had only been involved in this activity for a short period of time and quit because she was not earning enough.

The 42-year-old who was charged under her maiden name Cameron denies her role in the scam.

In a shocking turn of events, a British mother, aged 42, has been charged alongside seven other Britons in connection with a £9.5m holiday food poisoning scam in Spain. The group is accused of filing fraudulent claims for food poisoning during their vacations in order to receive compensation.

Authorities in Spain have been cracking down on this type of scam, which has become increasingly prevalent in recent years. The accused individuals are facing serious charges of fraud and could potentially face significant penalties if found guilty.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of trying to cheat the system for personal gain. It is a sobering reminder that dishonesty and deceit will eventually catch up with you.

As the investigation continues, it is important for tourists to be vigilant and honest when it comes to making claims for compensation. This type of behavior not only harms the reputation of genuine victims of food poisoning but also puts a strain on the resources of the travel industry.

Let this be a cautionary tale for anyone considering taking advantage of the system for financial gain. The consequences are not worth the risk.

  • Did she kill him too? Late husband of woman who made ‘arsenic-laced’ Christmas cake that killed her two sisters and niece will be dug up by Brazilian police months after he died ‘from food poisoning’

Did she kill him too? Late husband of woman who made ‘arsenic-laced’ Christmas cake that killed her two sisters and niece will be dug up by Brazilian police months after he died ‘from food poisoning’

The late husband of a woman who baked an ‘arsenic-laced’ Christmas cake that killed her two sisters and niece is set to be exhumed by police over fears he may have been fatally poisoned months earlier.

Zeli Terezinha Silva dos Anjos, 61, from Torres, Brazil, prepared a traditional ‘Bolo de Natal’ Christmas cake for a festive family meal on December 23.

However, her sisters Maida, 58, and Neuza, 65, and Neuza’s daughter Tatiana, 43, all died shortly after eating it – with authorities later revealing that traces of the toxic metal arsenic were found in their bodies.

Three other family members, including Zeli herself and a 10-year-old boy – believed to be Tatiana’s son – fell ill and were also rushed to hospital.

Police are now preparing to dig up the body of Zeli’s late husband, Paulo Luiz, who died from a suspected bout of food poisoning in September.

It comes as suspicion falls upon Zeli after the festive tragedy, as Brazilian authorities seek to determine whether she intentionally poisoned her loved ones.

It’s believed Zeli has spoken to detectives from her hospital bed. However, she has not yet been arrested or charged with any offence.

Seven members of the family were eating the cake in Zeli’s home on the coast of Brazil. Only one person, who has not been named, did not eat the festive bake.

Blood tests carried out by doctors revealed arsenic in the blood of some of the victims, a potent poison the symptoms of which cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.

Officer Marcos Vinicius Veloso, who is leading the case, said there are no records of inheritance disputes or rows between family members.

It is believed Zeli ate two cake slices and was the first one to be taken to hospital after becoming severely ill – where she remains in stable condition.

She has reportedly told police she bought some the ingredients on Monday before the gathering.

Police have not yet determined whether the victims were poisoned.

Tatiana and Maida are believed to have both suffered fatal heart attack while, Neuza died from ‘shock after food poisoning’.

According to the police officer on the case, arsenic was found in Neuza’s body as well as two other victims who survived.

Neighbours in the area will be interviewed by officers.

A friend of one of the people who died told a local news channel it was a traditional cake that the family made every year.

Police have carried out an examination of the food eaten by the family and other items in the house, and many of them were expired.

Zeli is thought to have told the authorities about the time and place where the ingredients were purchased.

A police statement to local network, Globo, said: ‘We even have information that there was mayonnaise there that had expired a year ago.

‘There were expired products in the residence. A bottle was found, a medicine, which should have had capsules inside it and there were no capsules – there was a white liquid and this white liquid will also be examined.’

It’s understood that once Zeli has been released from hospital, she will be further questioned by investigators from the Civil Police.

Officials from the Hospital Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes de Torres said Tatiana and Maida both died from ‘cardiac arrest’.

While Neuza’s cause of death has been disclosed as ‘shock after food poisoning’.

The 10-year-old boy is believed to be in a stable condition following the tragedy.

Maida is understood to have been a teacher. Tributes have since been paid following her death, with friends hailing her a ‘wonderful person’.

One co-worker and friend wrote: ‘She was my colleague, she is my friend and my sweetheart! To be special and much loved by us all!! It’s unbelievable… strength to all of us, friends and family.’

The tragedy in Brazil follows a case in Australia in which a woman has been accused of killing her in-laws by allegedly poisoning them with wild mushrooms

Erin Patterson, 48, is said to have invited her former partner Simon Patterson to her home for the meal on July 29. 2023, with his parents Gail and Tom Patterson, 70, along with Gail’s sister Heather Wilkinson and her husband Ian, 68.

A day later, all four guests fell ill. Within a week, three would be dead, the fourth fighting for his life and the 48-year-old woman who cooked the lunch questioned by police amid claims she deliberately poisoned her relatives with wild mushrooms.

Patterson, who did not suffer any ill effects from the meal, previously claimed she had no idea the mushrooms she served were death caps – the most poisonous mushrooms in the world.

However, the 49-year-old has since been charged with three counts of murder and five counts of attempted murder. She has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Her trial is expected to start on April 28, 2025, in the supreme court, sitting in Morwell.

The case of the ‘arsenic-laced’ Christmas cake that killed two sisters and a niece has taken a chilling twist as Brazilian police announce plans to dig up the late husband of the woman responsible for the deadly dessert.

The woman, who remains unnamed, is currently serving a 30-year sentence for the murders of her family members after poisoning the cake with arsenic during a family gathering. However, suspicions have now been raised about the sudden death of her husband, who reportedly died from food poisoning just months before the tragic incident.

Authorities believe that the woman may have also been responsible for her husband’s death, possibly using the same deadly tactics to eliminate him. The decision to exhume his body comes as part of ongoing investigations into the case, with forensic experts hoping to uncover any evidence of foul play.

The shocking revelation has left many questioning the true extent of the woman’s crimes and wondering just how far her sinister motives may have reached. As the investigation continues, the truth behind the deaths of her family members and now her husband remains shrouded in mystery, leaving many to wonder: did she kill him too?

Three dead in suspected Christmas cake poisoning

Arsenic has been found in the blood of one of three women who died after eating a Christmas cake in a suspected poisoning in Brazil, a police chief has told local media.

The highly toxic substance was also identified in the blood test results of a 10-year-old boy and the woman who made the cake – both of whom are still in hospital.

Five members of the same family fell ill after eating the cake at a gathering in Torres, in the southern Rio Grande do Sul state, on Monday afternoon.

Police have sent the cake for testing, and said several out-of-date food items were also found during a search at the woman’s house. They added that it is not yet clear whether the suspected poisoning was intentional.

Test results from the cake are expected to be available by next week, according to local media.

On Friday, police requested for the body of a man – the late husband of the woman who made the cake – to be exhumed. He died in September from food poisoning, but police said his death was deemed natural at the time.

She is not considered a suspect in either of these cases at this time, and investigations are ongoing.

Six out of seven people at the Christmas celebration ate the cake on Monday afternoon, including the woman who baked it.

Police told Brazilian broadcasters that she is the only one believed to have eaten two slices of her homemade cake, and her tests returned the highest levels of arsenic.

Speaking to local media, police chief Marcos Vinicius Veloso said some of the family members complained that the cake had a “peppery” taste.

The family then began to experience symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhoea, and five of them sought medical help at the Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes Hospital at around 01:00 local time (04:00 GMT) on Tuesday.

Hours later, two sisters died from cardiac arrest, the hospital said. They have been named in local media as Maida Berenice Flores da Silva, 58, and Tatiana Denize Silva dos Santos, 43.

The third victim, whose blood test presented traces of arsenic, died later on Tuesday evening from “shock after food poisoning”, the hospital said.

She has been named locally as 65-year-old Neuza Denize Silva dos Anjos.

Arsenic is a metallic element that occurs naturally.

Its inorganic form is highly toxic and classified as a category one carcinogen by the EU – meaning it’s known to cause cancer in humans.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), people are exposed to elevated levels of inorganic arsenic through drinking contaminated water or using it in food preparation, as well as irrigation of crops, industrial processes and smoking tobacco.

Because arsenic exists in soil, small amounts can get into food, though in general these levels are so low that they are not considered a cause for concern.

It is also used, albeit in limited cases, in pesticides and pharmaceuticals.

Three dead in suspected Christmas cake poisoning

Tragedy struck a small community today as three individuals were found dead after consuming Christmas cake laced with a toxic substance. Authorities are currently investigating the incident as a case of suspected poisoning.

The victims, two elderly women and a young child, were rushed to the hospital after falling ill at a holiday gathering. Despite efforts to save them, all three passed away within hours of each other.

The entire community is in shock and mourning the loss of these individuals during what should have been a joyous time of year. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families and loved ones of the victims.

As the investigation unfolds, authorities are urging caution and reminding the public to be vigilant about the food and drinks they consume, especially during the holiday season.
