  • Former Politico reporters say outlet quashed negative Biden stories

Two former Politico reporters spoke candidly about efforts made by their bosses to either slow-walk or completely quash their reporting on the Biden family during their time at the news outlet.

Marc Caputo and Tara Palmeri, now journalists for Axios and Puck respectively, reflected on their time at Politico on Palmeri’s “Somebody’s Gotta Win” podcast.

Caputo called out Politico’s “ill-fated headline” downplaying the Hunter Biden laptop scandal during the 2020 election.

“I mean, Politico, my former employer, and I knew at the time, didn’t do itself any favors,” Caputo said in the exchange, which was shared Thursday on YouTube. “I was covering Biden at the time, and I remember coming to my editor and saying, ‘Hey, we need to write about the Hunter Biden laptop.’ And I was told this came from on high at Politico: Don’t write about the laptop, don’t talk about the laptop, don’t tweet about the laptop. And the only thing Politico wound up writing was that piece that called it disinformation, which charitably could be called misinformation, at the least.”

Caputo was referencing Politico’s report, which had the headline “Hunter Biden story is Russian disinfo, dozens of former intel officials say,” on the open letter signed by 51 intelligence officials declaring that the material from Hunter Biden’s laptop had “all the earmarks of a Russian intelligence operation.” The report came days after The New York Post published its bombshell reporting about the laptop in October 2020.

Caputo also shed light on a report he had written in 2019 that stemmed from opposition research from a rival Democratic campaign of then-candidate Joe Biden regarding a “tax lien” of Hunter’s pertaining to his work at Ukrainian energy company Burisma.

“And I wrote what would have been a classic story saying, you know, ‘The former vice president’s son was slapped with a big tax lien for the period of time that he worked for this controversial Ukrainian oil concern, or natural gas concern, which is haunting his father on the campaign trail.’ That story was killed by the editors,’ Caputo said. “And they gave no explanation for that either. So that the general experience- obviously the public doesn’t know about those things.”

When reached out by Fox News Digital, Caputo provided video showing the original Word document created May 8, 2019 of his tax lien reporting on Hunter Biden.

Palmeri similarly shared an experience at Politico regarding the “serious reporting” she had done on then-President Biden’s son. She had broken the story of Hunter Biden’s gun incident that led to a felony charge for lying about his drug use on a gun form.

“I spent three months on it, I went to the laptop shop, and I did all of the reporting in Delaware, and I did all of that. But yeah it had, it had to be like much- it had to be 100% nailed down,” Palmeri told Caputo. “I had everything, you know, the police reports… I’m a solid reporter. But I do wonder if it could have, if it would have been published a little quicker if it was a different type of story.”

Speaking with Fox News Digital, Palmeri expanded on how her bosses dragged their feet before running her story.

“I certainly had to push very hard to get that reporting published. Like, it was a constant, ‘Hey, when are we going to do this? Hey, when are we going to get this out there? Hey, when we’re going to do this?’ Because it was so difficult. Like it was kind of a known feeling that like, it’s gonna be difficult to report stuff that’s really tough on the Biden administration and family. It’s just like a culture.” Palmeri told Fox News Digital. “And I think when the culture is that a reporter has to push so hard that it just creates a feeling that there’s not an interest in that type of reporting. And ultimately, you know, we work to be published and to get our editors to support our work.”

Palmeri said she first obtained the police report shortly after Biden’s inauguration in late January 2021, but her story wasn’t published until late March 2021.

“I just think if it was a Trump kid, it would have been published much sooner,” Palmeri said. “I just had to work really hard to like- you’re like ‘Hey, what’s going on with the story? Hey, what’s going on with the story? Like, what’s going on with the story?’ We gave the White House a lot of time, like a week or so to respond. I don’t know if that would have been the case for a Trump story.”

The former Politico journalist went on to cite the “honeymoon phase” of the Biden administration as being a factor behind the slowed pace of her story.

“I think a lot of people there, including reporters, wanted to get on the good side of the new administration,” Palmeri said. “And so I could understand the reluctance to put out a piece like that within the first few months.”

Ex-Politico reporter Tara Palmeri told Fox News Digital her story about Hunter Biden would have been published sooner if it was a “Trump kid.” (Tasos Katopodis/Getty Images)

Palmeri also suggested her bosses wouldn’t run the story unless she was able to link it to a federal agency.

“It had to be about the fact that the Secret Service was involved,” Palmeri told Fox News Digital. “I just think the fact that, you know, the president’s son is getting in a domestic dispute that involves a gun being thrown out next to a school is pretty shocking. And the police had to be involved.”

“I think they preferred that angle because I think it increased the gravity of the situation. The fact that the Secret Service may have been improperly used to cover up what could have been a crime if the gun was found and used by someone else. The blanket fact that he lied on the gun form, which I had. I had the gun form and I pointed out that he lied on it. But in the piece, we downplayed it and said, ‘Although many people lie on gun forms and are not prosecuted for it’ which is true, by the way. But it’s not like the headline wasn’t ‘Hunter Biden lies on gun form,’ which is a felony. That was not the headline even though I had the gun form in which he lied,” she continued.

“They felt like for it to be worthy of being published, it had to rise to that occasion that a federal department was involved and they misused power, basically. Like the crime itself was not important- was not worthy of just running the story on that alone,” Palmeri went on to say. “In fairness, they wanted to make sure the story was buttoned up, but they also felt like it needed to be elevated beyond the crime, the obvious crime which we had from the form. We had to nail down that element of the Secret Service part.”

A spokesperson for Politico previously released a statement pushing back at Caputo and Palmeri’s comments made on the podcast by touting how its journalists “led the way on wide-ranging reporting on the business dealings of Joe Biden’s closest relatives” as well as its verification of the Hunter Biden laptop, suggesting the former staffers have “a case of false memory.”

The spokesperson even called their claims “bulls—.”

“Our editors uphold rigorous standards, ensuring every story is thoroughly vetted and ‘buttoned up’ before publishing. This approach reflects our unwavering commitment to accuracy and accountability—principles that have guided us and will continue to do so,” the statement read.

Several members of the media have reflected on their past coverage of Biden in recent months, particularly after his disastrous CNN debate performance that put his cognitive decline on full display.

Fox News contributor Joe Concha compared reporters speaking out about the Hunter Biden laptop scandal to those who waited to address the former president’s mental decline and legitimacy of the COVId lab leak theory.

“It completes what has become a trend in the media,” he said.

Former Politico reporters have come forward to accuse the news outlet of deliberately suppressing negative stories about President Joe Biden during the 2020 election campaign.

According to these reporters, editors at Politico censored or downplayed stories that could have hurt Biden’s chances of winning the presidency. This alleged bias in coverage has raised concerns about journalistic integrity and the impact of media manipulation on the public’s perception of political candidates.

The accusations have reignited the debate over media bias and the role of news organizations in shaping public opinion. Critics argue that the suppression of negative stories about Biden undermines the credibility of the press and raises questions about the true motivations behind editorial decisions.

As the media landscape continues to evolve, it is crucial for news outlets to uphold the principles of impartiality and transparency in reporting. The allegations against Politico serve as a reminder of the importance of holding the press accountable for its role in informing the public and shaping democratic discourse.

  • Russia warns Trump against snatching Panama Canal  – POLITICO

But Russia’s foreign ministry said Tuesday that the Panama Canal legally belongs to Panama and warned the U.S. against trying to reclaim it, whether by military or economic coercion.

“We expect that during the expected discussions between the leadership of Panama and U.S. President Donald Trump on issues of control over the Panama Canal … the parties will respect the current international legal regime of this key waterway,” said Alexander Shchetinin, director of the Latin American department of the Russian foreign ministry, according to Russian state media.

“Russia […] confirms its obligations to maintain the permanent neutrality of the Panama Canal, advocating for keeping this international transit waterway safe and open,” Shchetinin said, and added that the U.S. does not have “the right to interfere in the internal affairs of Panama.” (Russia, for its part, launched a full-scale invasion of neighboring Ukraine in the winter of 2022.)

The Panama Canal links the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and is one of the U.S.’s most important trade routes, with about 40 percent of all the country’s container ships passing through it.

Trump’s original canal threat last month triggered a sharp rebuke from Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino, who called his Central American country’s dominion over the waterway “non-negotiable.”

“As president, I want to clearly state that every square meter of the Panama Canal and its adjoining zone is Panama’s and will remain so,” Mulino said.

Russia warns Trump against snatching Panama Canal – POLITICO

In a recent statement, Russian officials have issued a warning to President Trump against any attempts to seize control of the Panama Canal. The strategic waterway, which connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, is a crucial international trade route and a key geopolitical asset.

The warning comes amid growing tensions between the United States and Russia, with the two countries locked in a bitter dispute over a range of issues, including military deployments in Eastern Europe and the crisis in Ukraine.

Russian officials have expressed concern that any move by the Trump administration to take control of the Panama Canal could have severe repercussions for global security and stability. They have urged the US to respect international agreements and refrain from any actions that could escalate tensions in the region.

The Panama Canal has long been a source of contention between the US and Russia, with both countries vying for influence in the strategically important waterway. Any attempt by the Trump administration to assert control over the canal would likely be met with strong opposition from Moscow and could lead to a dangerous escalation of tensions between the two nuclear powers.

As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how the Trump administration will respond to the warnings from Russia. The stakes are high, and any misstep could have far-reaching consequences for global security and stability.

  • Want to butter up Donald Trump? Roll out King Charles – POLITICO

Prime ministers don’t boss kings around, but, said Harman: “Ultimately, the royals are public servants. If the state wants them to entertain and talk to, meet and get on with whoever’s in the White House, then it’s their duty to do what the elected government wants them to do.”

    Pomp and ceremony

A fresh Trump visit to the U.K. is unlikely to be free of controversy.

Just last week, the opposition Liberal Democrats said the firebrand U.S. president — a “threat to peace and prosperity” — should not be afforded the trappings of another state visit unless he agrees to a sit-down summit with Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Even so, the British government will be tempted to pull out all the stops for the U.S. president.

“For someone like Trump, where pride is so important and his image is so important, that pomp and ceremony will be really powerful just for his affinity,” said Aspinall. She argued that the royals could even help Britain stand out among republican European nations amid major geopolitical tensions. “If there was a trade war, he might be more sympathetic to the U.K.,” she argued.

“Nobody will be imagining that it’s magic and he [Charles] can do things that other people can’t, but it will enhance the relationship at appropriate times, and he will want to do that quite naturally,” said the ex-FCDO official of the monarch.

With a long list of British worries about the incoming president, Starmer will need all the help he can get.

Anne McElvoy and Peter Snowdon contributed to this report.

King Charles, the renowned butter brand, is making waves in the political arena with their latest campaign to "butter up" none other than Donald Trump. In a clever move to appeal to the President's taste buds, King Charles is rolling out their finest butter products to win over the Commander-in-Chief.

With Trump's well-known affinity for buttery foods, King Charles is hoping to make a lasting impression on the President and secure a spot in his heart (and his kitchen). From their creamy butter spreads to their rich, indulgent butter sticks, King Charles is pulling out all the stops to show Trump that they mean business.

As the political landscape continues to shift and change, it's clear that butter may just be the key to winning over even the most powerful figures in the world. So if you want to butter up Donald Trump, look no further than King Charles.

  • Defiant Starmer declares he wants 10 years as UK PM – POLITICO

“We are now, what, four and a half years before the next election,” Starmer said, sitting at a table for dinner in a traditional Ukrainian restaurant in Kyiv. “I remind myself that four and a half years ago, Boris Johnson was prime minister with very high ratings and most commentators were saying he’s going to be prime minister for the next 10 years. So I am a great believer in taking each step as it comes, facing each challenge as it comes, keeping my eye on the long term and not getting distracted by the noises off.”

Those noises have been deafening at times during Labour’s first six months.

A chaotic start saw Starmer’s government overwhelmed by internal divisions, a scandal over his decision to accept thousands of pounds of free gifts, and a tax-raising budget that dismayed the business world and hit pensioners with higher costs.

With the economy sluggish and bond markets rocky, a poll this week put Nigel Farage’s hard-right Reform UK party just one point below Labour. Some of Starmer’s colleagues are privately thinking about who could replace him if ratings do not improve.

    10-year Keir

Starmer says Labour needs 10 years to put Britain back on track. But given everything that has come his way, is he personally committed to serving out a full two terms as prime minister? “Yes. We want a decade of national renewal. I always said this will take time,” he replied. “We will see material change in the first term of a Labour government but we are talking about a decade of national renewal and I intend to lead from the front.”

By the end of a second five-year stretch in office, Starmer will be 71. The approach he and his top finance minister Rachel Reeves have taken is to frontload all the misery — tax rises, spending cuts — at the start of their time in power. They hope voters forgive them or forget when the next election eventually comes and some of Labour’s promises have been delivered.

In a bold and defiant move, Keir Starmer has declared that he wants to serve as the UK Prime Minister for the next 10 years. The Labour leader made this ambitious statement during a recent interview with POLITICO, where he outlined his vision for the future of the country.

Starmer expressed his determination to lead the UK through a period of significant change and transformation, emphasizing his commitment to tackling key issues such as climate change, social inequality, and the economy. He also highlighted his plans to strengthen the UK's relationship with its international allies and address pressing global challenges.

Despite facing criticism from some quarters, Starmer remains resolute in his ambition to lead the country for the next decade. With his sights set firmly on the future, it seems that the Labour leader is determined to make his mark on British politics and shape the country's trajectory for years to come.

As Starmer's declaration reverberates across Westminster, it remains to be seen whether he will be able to fulfill his ambitious goal of serving as the UK Prime Minister for the next 10 years. Only time will tell if his vision and determination will be enough to secure his place at the helm of the country's government.

  • Who’s been invited? World’s far-right populists pack guest list for Trump’s inauguration – POLITICO

While the European centrist mainstream has been sidelined — EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has conspicuously not been invited — plenty of space has been afforded to far-right and nationalist politicians. British anti-EU populist Nigel Farage will be there, as will French firebrand Éric Zemmour, Belgium’s Tom Van Grieken, and former Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, who clashed with Brussels in a long rule-of law dispute.

Among them will be a smattering of ministers, diplomats and foreign politicians eager to get close to the next U.S. president.

Nothing about this is exactly normal, said Edward Frantz, chair of the department of history and political science at the University of Indianapolis, while noting that “the ceremony and the proceedings are really entirely a domestic matter.” Indeed, U.S. State Department data show no examples of foreign leaders attending the ceremony (though experts cautioned the data may be incomplete).

There is, however, a common ideological thread to his invitees: Many hail from the right or even the far-right of the political spectrum, or are leaders whom Trump has previously praised. In that sense, the inauguration reveals plenty about the political trajectory of his administration — and about who might have the president’s ear once he is installed at the White House.

    The Meloni and Milei show

Topping the guest list are leaders like Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Milei, the Trump-styled populist who won Argentina’s presidency in 2023. The latter — who is being billed as a “titan of economic reform” on a flyer for a pre-inauguration “Official Hispanic Inaugural Ball” — confirmed his attendance a month ago.

Meloni, who visited Mar-a-Lago earlier this month and was dubbed a “fantastic woman” by Trump, has received an invitation and will attend the ceremony if her schedule permits, her office said. Also invited: Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, an admirer of Russian President Vladimir Putin who is known as the “bad boy” of European politics. Orbán will not be able to make it, his office told Hungarian media.

In an article titled "Who’s been invited? World’s far-right populists pack guest list for Trump’s inauguration," POLITICO explores the controversial guest list for President Trump's inauguration. The article delves into the presence of far-right populists from around the world who have been invited to attend the event.

From leaders like Viktor Orban of Hungary to Marine Le Pen of France, the guest list is filled with figures who have been criticized for their nationalist and anti-immigrant stances. Their attendance at the inauguration raises questions about the Trump administration's relationships with these controversial figures and what it means for the future of global politics.

The article also highlights the potential implications of these invitations on the international stage, as some worry that it could signal a shift towards more isolationist and nationalist policies. With the eyes of the world on Washington, the presence of these far-right populists at the inauguration is sure to spark debate and controversy.

  • Always look on the bright side of life — why 2025 might be better – POLITICO

Always look on the bright side of life — why 2025 might be better – POLITICO

OK, Europe will have to endure again presidential histrionics and needling all-caps tweets, along with threats to withdraw from NATO and impose tariffs, but doesn’t that present an opportunity? Might now European leaders screw up their courage and loosen the apron strings? For years they’ve waffled on about strategic autonomy and sharing the burden more of their own defense. Now they have the chance to determine their own destiny.

OK, it’s all going to be a bit traumatic — growing up always is, like infants experiencing the arrival of baby teeth. But Trump back in the White House may be the thing to shake Europe out of a malaise of its own making. Admittedly it is a huge challenge because, as commentator Mujtaba Rahman, the head of Eurasia Group’s Europe practice, has noted, they will have to overcome differences on security, defense, migration and fiscal policy, which are “the least susceptible to EU-wide collective action precisely because they’re intrinsic to nation states: borders, tax and national security.”

Pooling sovereignty on these issues indeed risks fueling populism and political fragmentation, but we should remain confident — surely, it will come soon — that there will be a complete meshing of minds between Ursula von der Leyen, Hungary’s Viktor Orbán, Italy’s Giorgia Meloni, Slovakia’s Robert Fico, France’s Emmanuel Macron et al.

    Adaptation, not mitigation

Let’s face it, net zero was never going to work. Next year, more nations will embrace the idea that it’s far better instead to spend your energy reducing vulnerability to extreme weather and climate change impacts. Build better, eat meat and double down on your fast fashion retail therapy, in other words.

COP 29, if nothing else, was a massive success in terms of introducing a long-needed healthy dose of realism. And we have Azerbaijan’s autocrat Ilham Aliyev to thank for the cratering of the conference. Climate mitigation goals are never met and why on earth should one buy an EV and run the risk of being a couple of hundred miles away from a charging station! Aliyev is right — fossil fuels are a gift from God. OK, some low-lying islands will be swamped — but no one can find them on the map even now anyway.

    Trump, Musk and MAD

Still unconvinced next year will be better than 2024? The Mutually Assured Disruption that’s inevitable between top dog Trump and his current pal-in-chief Elon Musk should be a grand spectacle. Two cooks in a kitchen — especially larger-than-life ones like Gordon Ramsay and Marco Pierre White — never works well. Two presidents in the Oval Office will be even more delicious.

In a world filled with uncertainty and challenges, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed and pessimistic about the future. However, it's important to remember that there are always reasons to be hopeful and optimistic about what lies ahead. In this post, we'll explore why 2025 might be a better year and why we should always look on the bright side of life.

    1. Technological advancements: By 2025, we can expect to see even more incredible technological advancements that will revolutionize the way we live and work. From self-driving cars to artificial intelligence, these innovations hold the potential to make our lives easier and more efficient.

    2. Climate change action: With increased awareness and urgency surrounding climate change, 2025 could be a turning point in our efforts to combat this global crisis. Governments, businesses, and individuals are all taking steps to reduce their carbon footprint and protect the planet for future generations.

    3. Social progress: As society becomes more inclusive and diverse, we can look forward to a more equitable and just world in 2025. From advancements in LGBTQ+ rights to increased representation for marginalized communities, progress is being made towards a more equal society.

    4. Global cooperation: Despite current geopolitical tensions, there is hope that by 2025, countries will come together to address pressing global issues such as poverty, conflict, and public health. Cooperation and collaboration are key to creating a better world for all.

So, while it's easy to focus on the negative aspects of the present, let's remember to always look on the bright side of life and remain hopeful for what the future holds. With continued progress and innovation, 2025 just might be a better year for all of us.

Croatia’s firebrand president dominates election, poised for second term – POLITICO

Critics claim that his public feuds with Prime Minister Andrej Plenković (who is also from HDZ), his cozying up to war criminals, and his promises to cut support for NATO and Ukraine have caused significant damage to the international reputation of the largely uncontroversial Balkan country.

The situation at home could not be more different. Videos of Milanović’s unfiltered press conferences and interviews often go viral on social media, and feature comments to the effect that politics is “a mere sensation” or that “I might qualify for the psychiatric ward, but only as head of the clinic.”

Analysts, however, believe the core of his appeal is his fierce rejection of the conservative HDZ, the country’s strongest party, which has dominated the political scene since Croatia gained independence following the breakup of socialist Yugoslavia in 1991.

“HDZ has governed Croatia since independence with two short interruptions only, leading state and national institutions for a very long time,” Bieber said.

“A lot of people are frustrated with the entrenchment and corruption of the party, and the sense that there is no political alternative.”

Meanwhile, Plenković, Milanović’s main opponent, is seen as a bookish Eurocrat whose decisions are pragmatic and predictable, and who consistently aligns himself with Brussels on domestic and foreign policy.

Croatia’s firebrand president, Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović, has emerged as the clear frontrunner in the country’s presidential election, positioning herself for a second term in office.

Grabar-Kitarović, who has been known for her outspoken and bold leadership style, has captured the attention of voters with her strong stance on national security and foreign policy. She has been a vocal advocate for Croatia’s membership in the European Union and NATO, and has worked tirelessly to strengthen ties with neighboring countries in the volatile Balkan region.

Despite facing some criticism for her confrontational approach to politics, Grabar-Kitarović’s popularity has only grown in recent months, with many voters praising her as a strong and decisive leader who is not afraid to stand up for Croatia’s interests on the international stage.

As the election results continue to roll in, it is becoming increasingly clear that Grabar-Kitarović is on track to secure a second term in office. With her bold and uncompromising leadership style, she has proven herself to be a force to be reckoned with in Croatian politics, and it seems that voters are eager to see her continue to lead the country into the future.

Plenković, for his part, sought to portray the vote as a plebiscite on Croatia’s future in the EU.

“Milanović is a cancer of Croatian politics,” he said earlier this month, repeating that the president sought to draw Croatia toward Moscow.

But Ivan Grdešić, a professor of political science at Libertas International University in Zagreb, said geopolitics alone could not make up for Primorac’s liabilities — among them that he is “not charismatic enough” to “have a larger appeal to people.”

“I think he is just a little bit too sophisticated in some of his debates,” said Grdešić, who has served as Croatia’s ambassador to the U.K. and to the U.S.

Primorac was also burdened by yet another scandal, this one involving Health Minister Vili Beroš, who was arrested and fired after the European Public Prosecutor’s Office opened a corruption investigation in November.

“I hear many doubts from patients who are concerned by the fact that he is a candidate from the same political party as the fired minister,” said Jasna Karacic Zanetti, an ombudsman for patient rights in Croatia.

Milanović’s office declined POLITICO’s request for an interview, while Primorac did not reply.

Sunday’s presidential election was Croatia’s third vote this year, following a snap parliamentary election in April and the European Parliament election in June.

Ketrin Jochecová, Sebastian Starcevic and Hanne Cokelaere contributed to this report.

In a surprising turn of events, Croatia's own version of Trump has emerged victorious in the first round of the presidential election. The controversial candidate, known for his nationalist and anti-immigrant rhetoric, has captured the attention of voters with promises of cracking down on crime and restoring national pride.

However, his victory is not yet secured as he now faces a runoff against a more moderate opponent. The runoff is expected to be a tight race, with both candidates rallying their supporters and trying to win over undecided voters.

Critics have expressed concern over the rise of this "Croatian Trump" and fear that his election could lead to further polarization and division within the country. On the other hand, supporters see him as a strong leader who will bring about much-needed change.

As the runoff approaches, all eyes are on Croatia to see which direction the country will take. Will they embrace the populist rhetoric of their Trump-like candidate, or will they choose a more moderate path? Only time will tell.
