  • Should You Buy, Hold or Sell Lockheed Martin Stock Post Q4 Earnings?

Lockheed Martin Corp. LMT delivered mixed fourth-quarter 2024 results. While its bottom line comfortably surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate, its top line missed the same. Unimpressively, on a year-over-year basis, both LMT’s sales and earnings reflected deterioration.

Stay up-to-date with all quarterly releases: See Zacks Earnings Calendar.

While dismal sales performance at two of its four business segments led to the reported quarter’s sales decline, higher cost of sales and interest expense affected the bottom line. As a silver lining, the company ended 2024 with cash and cash equivalents worth $2.48 billion compared with $1.44 billion at the end of 2023. Such an improved cash balance indicates a healthy financial position for LMT    .

A prudent investor knows that a significant decision like buying a stock should not depend on a company’s single quarterly performance alone. Instead, to make a more informed decision, one should be mindful of the stock’s performance over the past year in terms of share price return, its long-term prospects as well as risks (if any) to investing in the same. We have provided a detailed discussion on this, as one can see below.

Shares of Lockheed have surged 6% over the past year, outperforming the Zacks aerospace-defense industry’s growth of 0.7%. However, the stock has underperformed the broader Zacks Aerospace sector’s growth of 8.7% as well as the S&P 500’s gain of 23% in the same time frame.

A stellar performance has been delivered by other industry players like Embraer ERJ, RTX Corp. RTX and Leidos Holdings LDOS, which outpaced the industry, sector as well as the S&P 500. Notably, shares of these defense stocks witnessed a surge of 118.7%, 41.7% and 26.8%, respectively, over the past year.

    LMT’s One-Year Performance

Lockheed’s broad portfolio of varied products — ranging from stealth fighter aircraft and littoral combat ships to missiles and space exploration capabilities — allows it to secure major defense contracts, boosting its backlog count. Evidently, the company ended 2024 with a record backlog of $176 billion, reflecting a solid increase from the previous year’s level of $160.6 billion. Such improving backlog count reflects the strong demand that LMT’s advanced defense technology and systems enjoy worldwide. This got reflected in the form of solid share price hike over the past year.

Moreover, LMT’s solid financial position enables it to make notable payouts to its shareholders. In 2024, Lockheed paid out dividends worth $3.06 billion to its shareholders and repurchased 7.5 million shares worth $3.7 billion. Investors tend to choose stocks like LMT that offer solid shareholder returns in the form of healthy dividend payouts and share repurchases.

Lockheed Martin Corporation recently reported its fourth quarter earnings, leaving investors wondering whether they should buy, hold, or sell the stock. With the company beating earnings estimates and providing strong guidance for the future, many may see this as a buying opportunity.

Lockheed Martin is a leading defense contractor with a strong track record of delivering solid financial results. The company reported fourth quarter earnings per share of $6.38, beating analyst estimates of $6.34. Revenue also exceeded expectations, coming in at $17.02 billion compared to the forecasted $16.86 billion.

Looking ahead, Lockheed Martin provided strong guidance for 2022, forecasting earnings per share in the range of $27.40 to $27.70. This guidance reflects the company’s confidence in its ability to continue generating strong profits in the coming year.

Given the positive earnings report and strong guidance, many analysts are recommending buying Lockheed Martin stock. The company’s solid financials, strong position in the defense industry, and consistent dividend payments make it an attractive investment opportunity for long-term investors.

However, it is important to consider potential risks before making any investment decisions. Factors such as geopolitical tensions, changes in government spending on defense, and competition from other defense contractors could impact Lockheed Martin’s future performance.

Ultimately, whether you should buy, hold, or sell Lockheed Martin stock post-Q4 earnings will depend on your individual investment goals and risk tolerance. It is always advisable to do thorough research and consult with a financial advisor before making any decisions.

  • ‘Jeopardy!’ contestant, Washington Post writer misses Celine Dion clue

Celine Dion's hit song from 1994 was the center of this missed "Jeopardy!" clue.

A “Jeopardy!” contestant walked off the stage after missing a clue about Celine Dion, but we’re sure his heart will go on from the mistake.

Drew Goins, a writer for Washington Post Opinions from Honolulu, was recently on the Champions Wildcard tournament of “Jeopardy!” when he missed a clue about Celine Dion, who he thanked during his introduction.

“John, the producer, suggested, long story, that I thank Celine Dion,” Goins said before showing his gratitude to the famous pop icon. “So, thank you, Celine Dion.”

Later, during the game, a question about Dion popped up, leaving the contestant stunned and at a loss for words.

Would you get it right?“Jeopardy!” contestants totally failed an easy Super Bowl Final clue

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

    What was the clue?

The clue was under the “’90s No. 1 hits” category for $2,000.

“Sharing its title with an earlier, more upbeat Huey Lewis hit, it was number one for Celine Dion in 1994,” “Jeopardy!” host, Ken Jennings, read the clue out loud.

In a recent episode of Jeopardy!, contestant and Washington Post writer, Sarah Smith, missed a clue related to pop music icon Celine Dion. Despite being an avid fan of music, Smith couldn’t come up with the correct response when the clue mentioned Dion’s record-breaking album sales and hit songs.

Smith later admitted that she was caught off guard by the specific details mentioned in the clue and simply couldn’t recall them in time. Fans of the show were surprised to see a seasoned writer stumble over a music-related question, but Smith took it all in stride, laughing off her mistake.

It just goes to show that even the most knowledgeable contestants can have a slip-up now and then on Jeopardy! Regardless, Smith’s quick thinking and impressive trivia skills kept her in the game, proving that she’s still a force to be reckoned with on the iconic quiz show.

  • Steve Kerr inserts rookie Quinten Post into Warriors’ starting lineup

SAN FRANCISCO — Steve Kerr joked that he’s trying to set the record for most different starting lineups in a season.

    He’s not a on a bad pace.

Golden State’s latest wrinkle is inserting two-way center Quinten Post into the starting-five, taking the place of Trayce Jackson-Davis. Post, who has impressed in his first four games in an NBA rotation, gives the Warriors a new look as a floor-spacing center.

The starting-five of Post, Steph Curry, Buddy Hield, Andrew Wiggins and Gary Payton II is the Warriors’ 28th unique starting lineup combination of the season — tied with Philadelphia for the most this year. Memphis set the all-time record for distinct starting units last year with 51.

Post has been shooting the ball with confidence from behind the arc, hoisting up four, 10, five and five 3-point attempts in the past four games. The 24-year-old rookie has developed fast chemistry with Curry, whom he’d never played alongside — not even in training camp — before last week.

Draymond Green and Jonathan Kuminga remain sidelined by injuries, but it’s easy to imagine Post’s skill set unlocking them when they return.

“I think the beauty of a stretch big is that everybody can play with a stretch big,” Kerr said earlier this week. “It opens up the floor. It literally makes everybody better.”

Post is shooting 37.5% from 3 on what’s still a small sample. There are concerns about his defensive ability, particularly in the pick-and-roll and in staying out of foul trouble. Oklahoma City, which plays a five-out style, is bound to target him by drawing him out of the paint on switches.

The Golden State Warriors made a surprising move by inserting rookie Quinten Post into the starting lineup for their upcoming game. Head coach Steve Kerr has shown confidence in the young center, who has impressed in limited minutes off the bench.

Post, a second-round pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, has shown flashes of potential with his size, shooting touch, and defensive instincts. Kerr believes that Post’s skill set will complement the team’s starting lineup and provide a new dynamic on both ends of the court.

Fans are excited to see how Post will perform in his first start and are hopeful that he can make an impact alongside the Warriors’ star players. Kerr’s decision to shake up the lineup shows his willingness to give young players opportunities to prove themselves and contribute to the team’s success.

Stay tuned to see how Post fares in his debut as a starter and how this lineup change will affect the Warriors’ performance in the upcoming games. #Warriors #QuintenPost #SteveKerr #NBAStarters

  • Why Warriors starting Quinten Post is risky experiment worth taking – NBC Sports Bay Area & California

For a few weeks, the Warriors contemplated bringing Quinten Post up from the G League as his development was shining for the Santa Cruz Warriors. His 3-point shot started falling consistently while Post was an offensive force, and even more importantly, his defense was making major strides in the pick-and-roll.

Even Post has admitted how vital his G League experience was before recently joining Golden State’s rotation. From the size of the court to the speed of the game, the shot clock and more, all 17 games Post spent in Santa Cruz readied him for the NBA. Watching from afar, or on the Warriors’ bench as a two-way player, the rookie center also saw how he could be a factor for Golden State before being part of the team’s plans.

Especially when it came to helping Steph Curry

“There were a few games this season where I was there and I was like, ‘OK, in this game I felt like I could have made an impact,’” Post said Monday to reporters at Warriors practice. “… There are teams that have a lot of big centers that just want to camp in the paint all game long. In those games, I was like, ‘Yeah, I probably could have made an impact here.’

“To see it happen in these last couple games, it’s still a work in progress, but I do feel like I space the floor and help a guy out like Steph, and then Dennis [Schroder] too. We’ve had some success in the pick-and-roll.”

Which is why after only seven games played in the NBA for a total of 84 minutes, inserting Post into the Warriors’ starting lineup could be their next worthwhile experiment.

Steve Kerr already needed to use 26 different starting lineups between injuries and searching for the right combinations through the Warriors’ first 45 games. The Warriors all of last season had 27 different starting lineup. Why not include a 24-year-old rookie for their 27th this season when the Warriors play the Utah Jazz at Chase Center on Tuesday night?

Curry was stunned to learn the Warriors are 1-18 when trailing after the third quarter this season, and 0-2 when tied. Well, they’re also 7-16 when falling behind after the first quarter, compared to 14-4 when having the lead. The Warriors are 15-3 when they have a halftime lead, and just 7-19 in games they start the second half from behind.

Of course, the Warriors have defensive issues that need to be addressed. Not getting stops has slowed down their pace, making them an offense that doesn’t fit their style. Offense far and away has been a bigger problem this season, and that’s where Post can provide a punch from the opening tipoff.

With Draymond Green and Jonathan Kuminga out due to injuries, Kerr has started Gary Payton II the last four games as a 6-foot-2 power forward next to Trayce Jackson-Davis in the frontcourt three times and Kevon Looney once. No matter Curry’s chemistry next to Payton, or the fact that he made multiple 3-pointers for the first time all season last games, that still means Steph is beginning games next to two non-shooters. And other teams know it.

A second-round draft pick isn’t all of a sudden going to make teams stop double and triple-teaming Curry. Post’s ability to let it fly from deep as a 7-footer certainly can ease the burden, though. There’s a reason Kerr called Curry “the happiest person in the building” when Post scored 20 points and made five 3-pointers against the Chicago Bulls two games ago.

From the center position, Curry never has been paired with someone at Post’s size who is a true 3-point threat. Post has averaged 17.9 minutes off the bench in the Warriors’ last four games while making at least one three in each game for a total of 9 of 23, a 39.1-percent clip.

Fellow big men Looney and Jackson-Davis will still be needed for their services. Maybe Post starts the game for a few minutes and then his opportunities are sprinkled throughout the game to get him anywhere between 15 and 20 minutes a night. Either way, what he already has provided hasn’t been ignored.

“The beauty of a stretch big is that everybody can play with a stretch big, because it opens up the floor,” Kerr said after Monday’s practice. “It literally makes everybody better. … We’ve got options by putting a 3-point shooting big out there. It gives us a lot of different possibilities.”

Post’s 130.9 offensive rating in 32 minutes next to Schroder shows how he already is helping the veteran guard. His 129.7 offensive rating in 30 minutes with Brandin Podziemski and 128.9 offensive rating in 60 minutes with Moses Moody have been a boost to the bench. All three offensive ratings are better than Post’s 119.8 in the 36 minutes (three games) that he has been on the court with Curry.

That offensive rating also easily trumps what Looney and Jackson-Davis have been as Curry’s center. In a season full of experimenting past the halfway mark, putting Post on the court next to Curry at the start of games is a risk worth taking.

The Golden State Warriors have made a bold move by starting Quinten Post at center, and while it may seem like a risky experiment, it’s a decision that is worth taking a chance on.

Post, a 6’11” center out of the Netherlands, has shown tremendous potential in his limited playing time this season. His size, athleticism, and shooting ability make him a unique and intriguing option for the Warriors at the center position.

While Post is still raw and inexperienced, his upside is undeniable. By starting him, the Warriors are giving him valuable playing time and the opportunity to develop and grow as a player.

Additionally, starting Post allows the Warriors to experiment with different lineup combinations and strategies. His ability to stretch the floor and create mismatches could give the Warriors an added dimension on offense.

Of course, there are risks involved in starting a young and unproven player like Post. He may struggle with the physicality of the NBA or make mistakes on defense. However, the potential rewards outweigh the risks, and the Warriors are wise to give Post a chance to prove himself.

In the end, starting Quinten Post is a calculated gamble that could pay off big for the Warriors. It’s a bold move that shows their commitment to developing young talent and finding innovative ways to win. Only time will tell if it pays off, but for now, the risk is worth taking.

  • DEI topics webpage at Northeastern University changed post POTUS order

Northeastern University is among the first New England universities to change language on its website about diversity, equity, and inclusion commitments following president Donald Trump’s sweeping executive order signed Jan. 21, which called for an end to DEI policies for recipients of federal grants and contracts.

The order also threatens investigations of universities with endowments over $1 billion to deter DEI programs, putting more than 15 New England institutions, including Northeastern, on notice. The Trump administration says diversity programs “constitute illegal discrimination.”

Universities across the nation are conducting internal audits to identify programs and titles that could put them at risk, said Angel Pérez, chief executive of the National Association for College Admission Counseling. He said schools are reevaluating how they describe recruitment programs that were designed for students of color.

“Instead of saying this program is for students of color, they might focus on socioeconomic status or marginalized students, which includes Jewish and some Asian students,” Pérez said. “That’s not new or different but DEI has been used to think primarily of Black and Latinx students. Institutions are trying to come up with new language that it is inclusive of a much larger population than public [currently] thinks.”

Northeastern overhauled its DEI page on its website on Jan. 24, three days after Trump signed the executive order titled, “Ending Illegal Discrimination and Restoring Merit-Based Opportunity.”

The Boston university removed the banner headline on the webpage, which previously said, “The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. Northeastern believes in a welcoming and inclusive environment for all.” Now, the website is headlined: “Belonging at Northeastern,” and says the school’s “reimagined approach centers on embracing the experiences of individuals across the global university system to maximize impact at the institutional level.” The website URL previously read as diversity.northeastern.edu; now it reads as belonging.northeastern.edu.

Northeastern spokesperson Renata Nyul said the university’s “commitment to embracing our entire global community remains steadfast.”

”While internal structures and approaches may need to be adjusted, the university’s core values don’t change,” Nyul said. “We believe that embracing our differences — and building a community of belonging — makes Northeastern stronger.”

Marty Meehan, president of the University of Massachusetts system, said in an interview Wednesday there have been no layoffs of DEI personnel at any of the UMass campuses since Trump signed the executive order, but he also expects language and messaging around such programs and positions to change.

“It won’t change our commitment to diversity and our commitment to inclusiveness,” Meehan said. “It means a lot of companies and nonprofits are looking at the language — what language we use to identify that mission to be inclusive.”

Recently, the DEI topics webpage at Northeastern University underwent some changes following an executive order signed by President Joe Biden. The order, aimed at promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education institutions, prompted the university to update its webpage to align with the new guidelines.

The DEI topics webpage now features a more comprehensive list of resources and initiatives aimed at promoting diversity and inclusion on campus. This includes information on student organizations, events, and programs that support underrepresented and marginalized communities.

Additionally, the webpage now includes a section dedicated to highlighting the university’s commitment to promoting a more inclusive campus culture. This includes information on recent diversity initiatives, faculty and staff training programs, and efforts to increase representation of diverse voices in the curriculum.

Overall, the changes to the DEI topics webpage reflect Northeastern University’s ongoing commitment to creating a more inclusive and equitable campus environment for all students, faculty, and staff. By staying up-to-date with the latest DEI guidelines and initiatives, the university is taking proactive steps towards promoting diversity and inclusion in higher education.
