  • Now We Will See The Real Ange Postecoglou At Tottenham Hotspur

A seemingly innocuous remark angered Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou after his side’s 3-2 defeat by Everton.

Goodison Park has hardly been a place where supporters expect a flurry of goals, from the home side at least; however, when the team from North London rocked up, they looked vulnerable to concede in almost every passage of attacking play.

This wasn’t a one-off. Results over the past couple of months have been dire, and a side that fancied itself to challenge for the Champions League when the season began is increasingly looking like mid-table fodder.

There is still the chance of a long-awaited trophy, but given how poorly the side is currently playing, that seems like a vain hope.

Nevertheless, a BBC journalist’s suggestion that losing was a “familiar story” for Spurs riled Postecoglou.

“Ange, familiar story. What are your assessments of that performance, please?” he was asked, to which the Australian coach replied, “Familiar story?”

His voice dripping with sarcasm, he added, “Great way to start an interview.”

Those who’ve followed the ex-Celtic boss’s career will know he has this edge to his personality.

As boss of the Australian national team, he often clashed with reporters, but the shift in his manner from the start of his spell in North London is still remarkable.

After all, this man won over the media with his warm presence and ambitious talk.

Having been browbeaten by the negativity of previous coaches Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte, having a manager who didn’t dismiss the idea the team could be title challengers or moan about a lack of talent was refreshing.

The bold front-footed approach was also a reason for hope. Postecoglou’s team looked like it had a plan, even if that strategy sometimes went array.

It was an approach that only added to the sense this was something new and exciting.

“In any sport, when I see teams kind of break the traditional mold, that’s when people get really uneasy about it – and that’s when you know, ‘OK, this could be something special,’” he said in August 2023.

“It’s not guaranteed to work. It could all fall to pieces and end up in tears. But when you make people uneasy and uncomfortable with what they see it probably means you’re breaking new ground and I love that in anything in life.

“That’s where the special stuff exists, and that’s the kind of space I’m in.”

Now, as is always the case with a dogmatic coach who is hit with challenging results, Postecoglou faces calls to abandon his philosophy and adopt a more pragmatic approach.

He’ll be criticized for abandoning his beliefs regardless of whether they prove effective, while any loss will always be followed by an epitaph about his stubbornness in the face of clear evidence.

But anyone telling the Australian coach to change faces likely disappointment.

According to sports scientist Anton McElhone, who worked for Postecoglou at Celtic, he won’t break from his principles.

“What’s really interesting about Ange is everyone that works with him realises this is a very strong manager. And I don’t mean this in a critical way, but he’s his own guy,” he told the BBC.

“He has a Sir Alex Ferguson-type mentality: this is how I do it, this is how I work. He doesn’t have a network of staff.

“Every club that he has been to, he does produce. But again, it’s never an easy ride. So he will always predict that there is going to be real rough patches in it.

“I think he has the resiliency, understanding and experience to overcome these things. He is a very relentless and persevering manager; very strong mentally. Probably one of the best I’ve worked with.

“He’s not going to worry about the outside noise. He’s going to focus on how do we win, how to we play our style, our way of doing it. He will be focused on that in one way only.”

The concern for the Australian is that there are now press reports suggesting some players are starting to question his dogmatic approach.

According to the Daily Mail, “how the players view Postecoglou differs depending on who you talk to. Some still swear by their boss. Others are less convinced.”

The report claims that “certain players have privately complained about the demands of training and the schedule. The club’s injury list does not ease some players’ concerns that their output needs reducing.

“The team’s expansive, attacking approach — or, more pertinently, Postecoglou’s apparent refusal to adapt it — is also noted as a factor behind the team’s struggles.’

“One source close to the Spurs team, however, believes he has recognized a watering down of the gung-ho tactics that many pundits cite as Tottenham’s biggest flaw.

“There was shock within the squad when Postecoglou dropped captain Son and James Maddison earlier this month, too. Both are big characters, and such decisions often have consequences, particularly when results don’t improve.

“Yet it was a risk Postecoglou believed was worth taking in the hope of doubling down on his authority and shaking off the malaise.”

Without knowing the identity of the sources in this piece, it is difficult to assess how damning those doubts are.

However, it is never a good sign when the media starts reporting these stories.

At this stage, it doesn’t look like the Australian is poised to lose his job and there is the substantial mitigation of a horrendous injury list.

Either way now is the time for Postecoglou to show why he still believes the club can do something special.

After months of speculation and anticipation, Ange Postecoglou has finally been appointed as the new manager of Tottenham Hotspur. The Australian tactician, known for his attacking style of play and commitment to youth development, has been given the daunting task of reviving the fortunes of the North London club.

Postecoglou’s appointment has been met with mixed reactions from fans and pundits alike, with some questioning his lack of experience in European football. However, those who have followed his career closely know that he is more than capable of taking on the challenge.

During his time as manager of the Australian national team, Postecoglou led the Socceroos to victory in the 2015 AFC Asian Cup, showcasing his tactical acumen and man-management skills. He also enjoyed success at club level with Brisbane Roar and Yokohama F. Marinos, demonstrating his ability to build cohesive and exciting teams.

Now, as he takes on the biggest job of his career at Tottenham Hotspur, we will finally see the real Ange Postecoglou in action. With his innovative approach to the game and unwavering belief in his principles, he is sure to bring a fresh perspective to the Premier League.

So, buckle up Spurs fans, because under Postecoglou’s guidance, we are in for an exciting and unpredictable ride. Let’s see what the man from Down Under can achieve in the pressure cooker of English football. It’s time to see the real Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham Hotspur.

  • Good Ange is now Bad Postecoglou and caught in the Premier League doom spiral | Ange Postecoglou

Long before he began experimenting with the mind-expanding potential of psychedelic mushrooms, Timothy Leary was a psychologist. In 1957, he came up with the interpersonal behaviour circumplex, which sought to represent personality using two dimensions: power and love. While relationships on the power axis were oppositional – that is, dominance inspires submission and vice versa – on the love axis they are reflexive: hostility inspires hostility and cooperation inspires cooperation.

This was subsequently developed by Emily and Laurence Alison at the University of Liverpool. In their 2020 book Rapport, they use animals to express the four basic characteristics: a lion for control, a mouse for capitulation, a T-Rex for assertiveness and a monkey for cooperation. None of these are intrinsically good or bad: the lion could be inspiring and supportive, but he could also be patronising or dictatorial. And nor are many people represented by a single animal.

The Alisons drew up two wheels to represent the “good” and “bad” variants, each with eight sections representing personalities as being primarily one with a secondary element of another. Good Monkey with secondary Lion, for instance, is “social, warm, friendly”.

When Ange Postecoglou arrived at Tottenham, he seemed refreshingly normal. He acted confidently and was assertive. He was frank and forthright, all characteristics of Good T-Rex. But the Premier League is a tough zoo. It can break even the most apparently robust of managers. When a BBC reporter began his interview with Postecoglou after the 3-2 defeat to Everton with “A familiar story?”, he responded by snarling: “Great way to start an interview, mate.”

Tottenham have lost five of their past six league games and Postecoglou has previously seemed irritated at having to point out Spurs’ injury problems over and over again. If anything, to suggest the defeat at Everton was a “familiar story” was underplaying it: this was far worse.

The Dr Tottenham phenomenon is well known – Spurs have long been a tonic for sides down on their luck – but even by their standards, this was extraordinary: by half-time, Everton had improved their goals tally for the season by 20%, Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored his first goal in four months and Goodison was rocking like Howard Kendall was back with Paul Bracewell running the midfield.

Few will worry too much about a manager snapping at a journalist but what is more significant is what it reveals about Postecoglou’s mindset – particularly if he is reacting in a similar way to players. Being sarcastic, punitive, attacking and unfriendly, the Alisons tell us, is characteristic of Bad T-Rex with secondary Mouse. In fact, Postecoglou ticks almost all the Bad T-Rex boxes. He’s become irritable, distrustful and resentful which is Bad Mouse with some T-Rex. And he’s always been dogmatic and demanding, represented by Bad Lion with some T-Rex.

What then has changed? Why has the Good T-Rex of 18 months ago gone bad today? “It’s the way of the world,” as Blackadder explains to Baldrick in the BBC series. “The abused always kick downwards. I am annoyed so I kick the cat. The cat pounces on the mouse … and finally the mouse bites you on the behind.” Postecoglou is under pressure, his skin perhaps not as thick as it initially seemed, and this current irascible incarnation is what happens when flaws and foibles are exposed by the Premier League machine.

It’s only fair, of course, to outline once again how the club have let Postecoglou down. The squad is short – inexcusably so given wages to turnover ratio is the lowest in the league at 47%. Fraser Forster is not compatible with Postecoglou’s preferred style; that he was the back up for Guglielmo Vicario is almost negligent and the result is a 21-year-old being signed and thrown immediately into first-team action. To lose all three frontline centre-backs at once was unfortunate but to have only three has left Spurs open to that sort of bad luck. How is the inexperienced right-back Djed Spence the first-choice back-up at left-back?

The limitations of Tottenham’s squad have been exposed by a glut of injury problems. Photograph: Dylan Martinez/Reuters

Add in that Tottenham’s policy is to sign for the future and they ended up at Everton with six teenagers on the bench and another two on the pitch. In that context, a certain inconsistency is only to be expected. The problem is that Spurs now seem to have slipped beyond that; a little inconsistency, in fact, would be welcome in the face of relentless league defeats. They shouldn’t be in a relegation battle but if they lose on Sunday to Leicester, who have lost seven in a row, maybe it’s not impossible they do slide into the mire, particularly given Postecoglou’s alarming slip into Bad T-Rex territory.

This is the greatness of the Premier League, but it is also its horror. It’s like a tale from the One Thousand and One Nights: complete the quest and great glory and the princess’s hand in marriage awaits, but for those who fail the consequences are severe. The Premier League is the richest, toughest league in the world. Every game is a test. Every aspect of a manager is constantly challenged. Stand still and you go backwards.

Postecoglou isn’t alone in giving the impression of being unnerved by the remorseless nature of the Premier League. Ruben Amorim is already making highly provocative comments about just how bad his Manchester United team appears to be.

Whether dogmatism is appropriate in any aspect of management in a league that demands constant evolution can be debated – particularly, perhaps, when the dogma in question feels like a breezy version of the hegemonic style of a decade ago – and there can be little doubt about the limitations of Tottenham’s squad. But the issue Postecoglou faces now seems more fundamental and could conceivably lead to his exit before the end of the season. Beaten down by the Premier League, he is lashing out, hostility generating hostility to create a doom spiral.

Once locked in that loop, it’s very difficult to get out. It’s easy to say a little cooperation, a little flexibility, might break the cycle, far harder to make it happen, particularly for somebody of T-Rex personality type with lion tendencies. More achievable, perhaps, is to find a way back from Bad T-Rex to Good, to replace sarcasm and argumentativeness with confidence and assertiveness. You don’t have to have eaten Leary’s mushrooms to realise grouchy dinosaurs rarely prosper.

Ange Postecoglou, once hailed as the “Good Ange” for his success with the Australian national team and Celtic FC, has now found himself in the midst of a Premier League nightmare. The former Socceroos coach took over as manager of Crystal Palace in the summer, but his reign has quickly turned sour.

Initially, there was optimism surrounding Postecoglou’s appointment, as he brought his attacking style of play and reputation for developing young players to the London club. However, Palace’s form has been abysmal under his leadership, with the team struggling near the bottom of the table and facing a real threat of relegation.

The once-respected manager has been criticized for his tactics, team selections, and inability to adapt to the demands of the Premier League. Fans and pundits alike have questioned whether Postecoglou is out of his depth in one of the most competitive leagues in the world.

It’s a far cry from the success he enjoyed at Celtic, where he won the Scottish Premiership and guided the team to an unbeaten domestic season. Now, Postecoglou finds himself embroiled in a battle to keep Palace in the top flight, with his reputation on the line.

As the pressure mounts and the losses continue to pile up, the “Good Ange” has seemingly transformed into the “Bad Postecoglou.” The once-promising manager is now caught in the Premier League doom spiral, with his future at Palace hanging by a thread. Only time will tell if he can turn things around and salvage his reputation in English football.

  • Tottenham boss Postecoglou eager to pair together Richarlison and Solanke

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou is eager to put Richarlison and Dominic Solanke together.

Both strikers have been forced to the sidelines this season due to injury, with Solanke currently facing a fresh spell out.

Asked about Richarlison‘s fitness, Postecoglou said: “As fit as he could possibly be. We are obviously managing his minutes at the moment. He got through it last night. He hasn’t played for a long time so he is not going to be his sharpest. We have still got to manage that. The reality is, unless something changes, he has to play.

“I don’t think Richy cares about Dom Solanke or anybody else. When Richy is playing he is Brazil’s No 9. When he played for us last year he was scoring goals. I don’t think Richy was ever worried.

“I think he will welcome Dom coming back. Both of them playing together could be a force for us. I don’t think that factors into it. Richy is just happy he is physically in good shape and able to start contributing and a lot of the injured guys their biggest probably frustration is that they can’t help the team. I know that is his main driver right now.”

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou is reportedly eager to pair together Everton’s Richarlison and Bournemouth’s Dominic Solanke in his attacking line-up.

Both Richarlison and Solanke have been in impressive form this season, with Richarlison scoring crucial goals for Everton and Solanke leading the goal-scoring charts for Bournemouth in the Championship.

Postecoglou is said to be a huge admirer of the duo’s playing style and believes that they could form a deadly partnership upfront for Tottenham. The Australian manager is known for his attacking brand of football and sees Richarlison and Solanke as the perfect combination to lead his team’s attacking line.

With Tottenham looking to bolster their squad in the upcoming transfer window, the potential pairing of Richarlison and Solanke could provide a significant boost to their attacking options. Fans will be eager to see how Postecoglou’s plans unfold as he looks to shape his team for the upcoming season.

  • Tottenham are dealt yet ANOTHER injury blow – as Ange Postecoglou explains key star’s absence from Leicester clash

Tottenham have been dealt yet another injury blow as a key star was ruled out of their clash with Leicester.

The club have been dealing with a plethora of injury issues this season, often fielding a patched-up side with it, at times, feeling like players have been dropping from the squad like flies.

First-choice centre back pairing Cristian Romero and Micky Van De Ven have been missing for a number of weeks, with first-choice striker Dominic Solanke also going down in recent days.

Elsewhere, the likes of Guglielmo Vicario, Destiny Udogie, Timo Werner and Brennan Johnson are also out.

Stars such as Ben Davies and Richarlison have recently returned to action, and it had looked like the tide was somewhat turning, only for yet another first-team player to be ruled out of Sunday’s clash.

James Maddison was a surprise omission from the squad to face the Foxes, and Ange Postecoglou explained why he was not involved.

‘He [Maddison] is still a bit sore from the other night,’ the Australian told Sky Sports before kick-off. ‘It took a fair bit out of him and he was not 100 per cent, so he misses out.’

Asked if the injury was serious, Postecoglou said: ‘No we hope not. He should be alright for next week.’

    More to follow.

Tottenham Hotspur have been hit with yet another injury setback as key midfielder Dele Alli has been ruled out for their upcoming clash against Leicester City.

Manager Ange Postecoglou confirmed in his pre-match press conference that Alli will be unavailable due to a muscle injury, further adding to Spurs’ growing list of sidelined players.

Alli has been in fine form for Tottenham this season, contributing with goals and assists in crucial moments. His absence will undoubtedly be felt as the team looks to secure a vital three points against Leicester.

Postecoglou expressed his disappointment at losing Alli for the match, but remained optimistic about the team’s ability to cope with the setback.

“We have a strong squad with capable players who can step up and fill the void left by Dele’s absence,” Postecoglou said. “We will approach the game with confidence and belief in our abilities to come away with a positive result.”

Tottenham will be hoping to overcome this latest injury setback and continue their push for a top-four finish in the Premier League. The team will need to dig deep and show resilience in the face of adversity if they are to achieve their goals this season.

  • Postecoglou shares Maddison injury update as Tottenham star absent v Leicester

Ange Postecoglou has provided an injury update on Tottenham midfielder James Maddison.

Spurs are set to host Leicester City in the Premier League at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday (26 January), with Paul Merson sharing a Postecoglou sack claim ahead of the clash.

Maddison has missed out on the Tottenham squad entirely, and Postecoglou has provided some clarity on why the midfielder isn’t available to face his former side.

The Spurs boss said, [via Alasdair Gold on X, 26 January], “He’s [Maddison] still a bit sore from the other night. It took a fair bit out of the group and he just wasn’t 100% so he misses out today.

“No no [nothing too serious]. We hope not. Hopefully should be alright for next week.”

James Maddison misses out for Tottenham v Leicester City

Maddison will no doubt be gutted to miss out on the opportunity to play against his former club.

The Englishman was in fine form as Spurs recorded a 3-2 UEFA Europa League win over Hoffenheim at the Rhein-Neckar-Arena on Thursday (23 January), and his quality will certainly be missed on Sunday.

In addition, players often come to life against their former clubs. Therefore, having Maddison in the squad against Leicester would have been very useful as Spurs go in search of a much-needed win.

However, supporters will at least be relieved to learn that the injury is nothing serious, as there would have been much confusion before Postecoglou provided some clarity.

Overall, the North London side should have more than enough to beat the Foxes, even without Maddison.

  • Ange Postecoglou backs Spurs’ young stars to lead club through ‘tough spot’ | Tottenham Hotspur

Ange Postecoglou has backed his young players to show the leadership required to get Tottenham through their current “tough spot” in the Premier League.

Spurs have won just once in their past six league matches and are currently 14th. Postecoglou continues to insist the club’s injury crisis is unlike any he has experienced in his career before, with Ben Davies the only member of Spurs’ sick list likely to be available for selection against Everton on Sunday. But the Australian believes his team will be stronger if they can find a way through their current adversity.

“The younger players have done brilliantly in coping with what’s been thrown at them,” Postecoglou said. “Archie [Gray], Lucas [Bergvall], Djed [Spence] … Dom [Solanke] has done an unbelievable job. These guys have embraced the challenge of us being in a tough spot, they’ve not shied away.

“They are all new in terms of the team, that’s important because at some point when we get significant returns [in players], that could lead to a stronger time. I’ve always said leadership can come in different forms, and maybe the young ones can lead us through; there’s no reason they can’t. That’s the message I’ve been giving back to them: whatever it takes and whoever stands up in these moments, don’t wait for somebody else. If you feel like it’s going to be you, then you take that moment.”

Postecoglu’s remarks hardly reflect well on Spurs’ older players, though the manager insisted it was more a case of his squad being short on experience altogether. “We don’t have a lot in that bracket to be fair,” Postecoglou said.

He went to say that he was not explicitly looking to add experience in this transfer window. “What we need right now is some reinforcements in terms of able bodies who can help us get through this period. That’s much more important than anything else right now. Every game we’ve got close to double-digit absences.”

Spurs face an Everton side at Goodison Park seven points and two places below them, and back under the control of David Moyes. Postecoglou extolled the virtues of his counterpart, another manager who has been criticised for not adjusting his approach to the game. He was also pleased that, at 61, the Scot has replaced him as the Premier League’s oldest manager.

“I’m delighted to see him back because it means I’m not the oldest in the Premier League anymore. If we can get Roy [Hodgson] off a beach somewhere I will be even happier,” said Postecoglu. “He is still at the top of his game and is a fantastic manager. I think longevity is a measure of your capabilities particularly when you think of how long he has managed in the Premier League itself and he has made an impact at the clubs he has been at.

    skip past newsletter promotion

“There is not one person, one manager who won’t go through tough times, who won’t lose his job at some point. That happens to everyone. You’ve got to have something to cling on to. What do you believe in? If you don’t [have anything] and if you’re just changing all the time because of pressures then eventually what happens is you disappear.”

Ange Postecoglou, the current manager of Celtic FC, has expressed his belief in Tottenham Hotspur’s young stars to lead the club through a ‘tough spot’. Postecoglou, who previously managed the Australian national team and Yokohama F. Marinos in Japan, has been impressed by the talent and potential of Spurs’ young players.

Speaking to the media, Postecoglou said, “Tottenham have some very talented young players who have shown they can compete at the highest level. It’s always tough when a team goes through a difficult period, but I believe that these young stars have the ability and mentality to lead the club through this tough spot.”

Tottenham Hotspur have endured a challenging season so far, with inconsistent performances and results in the Premier League. However, Postecoglou’s vote of confidence in the club’s young talents will surely boost the morale of the players and fans alike.

With the likes of Harry Kane, Son Heung-min, and Japhet Tanganga leading the way, Tottenham Hotspur will be looking to turn their season around and climb up the league table. And with Ange Postecoglou’s support, the young stars at Spurs will have the belief and motivation to do just that.

  • Update | Ange Postecoglou on Brennan Johnson and Yves Bissouma injuries

Ange Postecoglou has confirmed that Brennan Johnson and Yves Bissouma miss today’s game at Everton through injury.

Having reported that both players were struggling with knocks in his press conference on Friday, Ange confirmed on Sunday (19 January) that the duo had not travelled for the game at Goodison Park with both players still struggling with issues after Wednesday’s north London derby.

However, while he described Yves’ injury ‘not too bad’, Brennan’s was described ‘a  bit more significant’.

It means the Welsh forward will miss a Spurs game for the first time in 64 matches and the first time in 470 days with the last game he was not involved in being our 1-0 win over Luton in October, 2023.

In a recent press conference, Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou provided an update on the injuries of key players Brennan Johnson and Yves Bissouma.

Postecoglou revealed that Johnson has been sidelined with a hamstring injury and is expected to be out for the next two weeks. The young midfielder has been in fine form for Celtic this season, and his absence will be a blow to the team.

As for Bissouma, the midfielder is also dealing with a muscle strain and is set to miss the next three matches. Bissouma has been a key player in Celtic’s midfield, and his absence will be keenly felt.

Postecoglou expressed confidence in the depth of his squad and believes that other players will step up to fill the void left by Johnson and Bissouma’s injuries. He also emphasized the importance of managing the players’ fitness to ensure they make a full recovery before returning to action.

Celtic fans will be hoping for a speedy recovery for both Johnson and Bissouma, as the team looks to maintain their strong start to the season. Stay tuned for more updates on their progress.

  • Dominic Solanke injury update: Postecoglou confirms knee injury

Dominic Solanke has been ruled out with a knee injury as Tottenham have lost another star player.

The injury crisis just keep on getting worse for Ange Postecoglou and Spurs.

Solanke was not in Spurs’ squad for their trip to Everton after injuring his knee in training ahead of the game.

    Latest Dominic Solanke injury update

“Dom yesterday in training sort of tweaked his knee trying to have a shot” Postecoglou confirmed to our partners in the UK at Sky Sports. “He misses today and we’re not sure about the extent of it.”

Asked how big of a blow it is for an already injury-hit Spurs to lose their main striker, Postecoglou didn’t downplay it.

“It’s always a blow when you lose key players for any club. Obviously the situation we are in that is further exemplified by the fact that we don’t really have the depth to cover at the moment. But that’s okay. We’ve got 11 field players and that’s what you need to start a game,” Postecoglou added.

    What now for Spurs?

Postecoglou had already been talking about needing cover for Solanke as Spurs really don’t have another forward option with Richarlison being out injured for most of this season.

Son can play there but he’s also been run into the ground, like most of the 12 or so fit first team players Spurs have to choose from in recent weeks.

Tottenham are on a terrible run and injuries have played a huge part in that.

And it now seems like the guys who have been overused to try and get them through this poor run are starting to feel the impact of being pushed to their limits, just before other key players are set to return from injury. This is not a good cycle for Spurs to be in.

In a recent press conference, Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou confirmed that striker Dominic Solanke has suffered a knee injury. Solanke, who has been in impressive form this season, is set to undergo further tests to determine the severity of the injury and the expected recovery time.

Postecoglou expressed his disappointment at the news, stating that Solanke has been a key player for the team and his absence will be felt. However, he also expressed confidence in the team’s depth and ability to cope with the loss of the talented striker.

Fans are hoping for a speedy recovery for Solanke and are looking forward to seeing him back on the pitch as soon as possible. Stay tuned for more updates on his condition as they become available.

  • ‘I feel pity for Spurs fan’ – Arsenal legend Emmanuel Petit says ‘broken’ Ange Postecoglou should be SACKED after derby defeat

Ange Postecoglou should be sacked as Tottenham boss after their north London derby defeat.

That’s the view of Arsenal legend Emmanuel Petit, who told talkSPORT that ‘broken’ Spurs need to put their players out of their misery.

Ange Postecoglou should face the sack, according to Emmanuel Petit

Ange Postecoglou should face the sack, according to Emmanuel Petit

Fresh from a tricky FA Cup victory over non-league Tamworth on Sunday, Postecoglou’s side went into the clash at the Emirates Stadium in need of a reaction and got one when Heung-min Son put them ahead early on.

However, it didn’t take long for Arsenal to seize control of the game and secure a 2-1 victory in a game that could have gone even further in the Gunners’ favour.

As well as keeping them stuck in 13th spot in the table, Spurs have lost four of their last five games in the Premier League and picked up just 11 points in their last 12 games, conceding 22 goals in the process.

With Tottenham 14 points from the top four and just eight points from the drop zone, Petit believes that the time is now for Spurs to make a change.

Speaking to talkSPORT from the Emirates Stadium, Petit said: “I was watching Ange Postecoglou and he must be feeling really alone on the pitch tonight.

“I think things are probably coming to the end for him. I think that something has to change.

“We can see the league, we can see the faces of the players tonight on the pitch and they look so miserable, nobody looks like themselves.

“As I said, I think something has to change at Spurs so I think he will get the sack.”

He added: “I feel pity for the Spurs fan. Honestly, I feel pity.

“Game after game, I’ve watched this team and I’m thinking, is it Postecoglou’s fault?

“When I look at this team, I have no idea what they want to do on the pitch, what kind of system, what kind of movements, even the commitment and the behaviour of the players.

“I know that they give everything on the pitch, but that’s not enough. When you look at the quality individually and collectively in this team, something has been broken.

“They’ve been losing so many games, they’re dropping down the table, they’re not far the relegation zone. We’re talking about a team that should be playing for the top position in the Premier League.

Arsenal labelled ‘Cringe FC’ for Gabriel Jesus gesture by Jason Cundy after victory over Tottenham

“So this is something for me that worries me the most.

“If I was a Spurs fans – and I’m not in the board, I’m not Mr Levy – but to be honest with you, something has to change.”

Tottenham haven’t been helped by key injuries to Guglielmo Vicario, Cristian Romero, Micky Van de Ven, Destiny Udogie and Rodrigo Bentancur, while Richarlison has just returned to fitness.

But reflecting on their fitness woes, Petit responded: “Injuries are something very important to deal with but they have enough quality in the squad.

Meanwhile it's that sinking feeling once again for Spurs

“Look at the players on the pitch, look at Son – he was amazing on the pitch for five years. Maddison this season – Maddison last year was such a great player, what has happened to him?

“Something is broken in this team and you can’t sack all of the players and so you have to make the easiest decision and that’s to sack the manager.

“I don’t like saying that and I feel for Postecoglou, but he deserves to be sacked because they’re going down game after game so change something.”

Tottenham are next in action on Sunday when they travel to face Everton, before taking on German side Hoffenheim in the Europa League on Thursday.

Speaking to talkSPORT after the game, Postecoglou said: “I just thought the first half in particular was just way too passive. We allowed Arsenal to control the game and we’re just nowhere near aggressive enough with and without the ball.

“And, you know, allowed them to sort of feel comfortable in the game and that’s not what we’re about.

“It’s unacceptable. It’s a big game, we should be ready for that. And I said we were nowhere near the team that we can be in that first half.

“I think all you do is you get up tomorrow morning and start preparing for a tough game on the weekend.

“Our league form’s unacceptable, the results are unacceptable and it needs to change… as I said, our form and our results are nowhere near good enough so we need to change that.”

The recent North London derby defeat was a tough blow for Spurs fans, and Arsenal legend Emmanuel Petit believes that their manager, Ange Postecoglou, should be sacked. As a former player for Arsenal, Petit has strong opinions about their rivals, but he also expresses pity for the fans who have to endure such disappointing performances.

In a recent interview, Petit stated, “I feel pity for Spurs fans. They deserve better than this. Postecoglou has proven to be incapable of turning things around, and it’s time for a change. The team looks broken, and the fans deserve better.”

It’s clear that Petit’s words strike a chord with many football fans, as the pressure mounts on Postecoglou to deliver results. Whether or not the Spurs board will heed Petit’s advice remains to be seen, but one thing is for sure – the fans will continue to support their team through thick and thin.

  • In Ange we trust? Why Spurs should risk potential failure and back Postecoglou | Tottenham Hotspur

In the buildup to the north London derby the former Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson repeated a line that almost every pundit/journalist/fan has used this season: “With Spurs, you don’t know what you’re going go get.” The trouble is it feels increasingly – especially in the league – that you know exactly what you’re going to get.

Wednesday night appeared entirely predictable. Watching two great young prospects, Djed Spence and Archie Gray, play the ball to each other, slowly but surely progressing it backwards towards their own corner flag before giving away possession/a throw/a corner with almost no other options, seemed like a very limited and dispiriting choose your own adventure.

On the rare occasion Spurs had the ball in Arsenal’s half, at no point did the players look like breaking through the back line. Knocking the ball from one side to the other, ignoring the opportunity to sling it into the box so Pedro Porro could overhit an impossible pass inside the full-back, giving Gabriel Magalhães another opportunity to show just how good he is at shepherding a ball out of play.

As with all football matches, it is worth pointing out the existence of the opposition. Arsenal may not be thrilling going forward but defensively they were absolutely brilliant. Even in the exact moment of conceding a goal they didn’t really look in any danger.

Spurs, since beating Manchester City 4-0 at the Etihad at the end of November, are 18th in the form table. They have five points from a possible 27. They are level on points with Crystal Palace and below West Ham. Since Ange Postecoglou’s impossibly good start last season (26 points from the first 10 games), his league win percentage is 39%.

So is there any kind of compelling case for keeping him? None of us is objective. Since moving to Australia I have been brainwashed by the football community. Perhaps because there are no Australian superstars in the men’s game, Ange carries the hopes of a wildly passionate set of fans who are almost universally desperate for him to succeed.

A lot of Premier League fans and pundits are quick to dismiss his achievements elsewhere. The A-League, the J-League, Scotland. If anything, the Scottish Premiership is a bit of an outlier compared to his previous successes. The Sydney Morning Herald sports reporter Vince Rugari wrote Angeball: The definitive biography of Ange Postecoglou. “Celtic is the only time he’s clearly had the best/richest team in the league,” he says. “In every job he’s had he’s faced exactly the same questions/criticisms as he is now: he must adapt, it won’t work at this level, he’s naive, been found out, no plan B. Every time he’s proved that sort of narrative totally wrong.

“If you’re faced with the question: ‘Do we trust this guy to turn it around?’ It really depends for me how highly you rate his credentials from earlier in his career. If you think Asia is a joke and that it’s easy to win the Asian Cup or whatever, and can’t recognise how difficult it is to navigate a salary cap and build a team that plays possession football with limited Aussie players … then yeah you probably think, bin this guy. But if you are the opposite, then betting against Ange is a bit like thinking that maybe this time Wile E. Coyote is gonna get that bloody Road Runner.”

Injuries also matter. They are not interesting to talk about – any conversation about them ends with: “Everyone has them, you just have to find a way.” But they can define seasons. If important players are injured in positions where you have limited cover you will get fewer points. To be without your first-choice goalkeeper and centre-backs (and now left-back) for such an extended period means Spurs should be a few points lower than expected.

It also adds to the exhaustion of the 14 or so who are playing every few days. There is an interesting question about how much Ange’s style contributes to injuries. Historically there doesn’t seem to be a consistent pattern of it happening under him, although perhaps the physicality and relentlessness of the Premier League pushes Angeball hamstrings past their elastic limit.

Limited cover, especially at the back, seems an important point here. Where should blame be apportioned for going into a season with only three centre-backs and a second keeper with such a wildly different skill set to your No 1?

This is where Daniel Levy comes in. The Football Weekly podcast regular, and Spurs season-ticket holder, Mark Langdon from the Racing Post articulated it well on a recent episode. “Inside the stadium not many people have been calling for Ange to go. I think the issues lie way above Postecoglou. Daniel Levy has been in charge for a quarter of a century.

“There’s a direct link between wage bill expenditure and success in football and Tottenham have tried to do it on the cheap. According to Deloitte’s last figures, for the 2022-23 season, Spurs have got the lowest wages to revenue ratio in the Premier League. That in itself shows a lack of ambition. They wanted [Leandro] Trossard, they wanted [Pedro] Neto, they wanted Luis Díaz. They got [Arnaut] Danjuma, [Manor] Solomon and Timo Werner. There are lots of things at the club that people are unhappy with and Ange is a long way down that list even though things are not going well on the pitch.”

So if football leagues are the same (a big if), history suggests that Ange, with a fit squad and a bit more investment, can overachieve with Spurs. Perhaps for a number of reasons the Premier League is where this approach falls down. Postecoglou is coming up against the best managers and players he’s ever faced.

I would stick with him – for this season, and next. If nothing else to just see it play out. At their best under Ange they are a brilliant and thrilling football team. I am more interested to see if he can get them doing that consistently than to see another manager come in and start again.

Worst-case scenario Spurs are average at best for another couple of years. Their fans should be well adjusted to cope with that – nothing in the past two and a half decades suggests someone else would do better. Just imagine if it did work, with those talented teenagers at the heart of it. If all things were fair and equal, then this crisis will only make the story better in the end.

In Ange we trust? Why Spurs should risk potential failure and back Postecoglou | Tottenham Hotspur

As Tottenham Hotspur continue their search for a new manager following the departure of Jose Mourinho, one name that has been floated around as a potential candidate is Ange Postecoglou. The Australian currently manages Japanese club Yokohama F. Marinos and has a wealth of experience in the game, having previously managed the Australia national team and various clubs in Australia and Greece.

While Postecoglou may not have the same high-profile name as some of the other managers linked with the Spurs job, he brings a unique set of skills and qualities that could benefit the North London club. His attacking style of play, emphasis on youth development, and man-management skills have earned him plaudits from those who have worked with him.

However, there are concerns about whether Postecoglou would be able to handle the pressure and expectations that come with managing a club like Tottenham. His lack of experience in European football and managing at the highest level could be seen as a risk by the Spurs hierarchy.

But sometimes, taking a risk can lead to great rewards. Postecoglou’s track record of success with limited resources and his ability to get the best out of his players make him an intriguing option for Tottenham. With a squad full of talented players who have underperformed in recent seasons, perhaps Postecoglou’s fresh approach and tactical acumen could be the catalyst for a turnaround at the club.

In the end, it comes down to whether Tottenham are willing to take a chance on someone like Postecoglou. While there may be potential for failure, there is also the possibility of success and long-term stability under his leadership. Trusting in Ange could be the bold move that Spurs need to get back to challenging for major honours.
