    On Saturday, Jan. 25, the actress and comedian, 43, shared a “no filter” selfie on Instagram just a few days after revealing that people who trolled her appearance online had an unexpected outcome: her Cushing syndrome diagnosis, which she first revealed in February 2024.

    Schumer shared the casual selfie, in which she showcased a soft smile while resting her hand on her head, on her Instagram Stories, where she revealed that she used “no filter.” The star also shared the same photo, in which she wears a simple charcoal gray sweatshirt, to the grid.

    “What can I say,” she captioned the latter post, “It was a good night.”

    The raw selfie comes three days after the comedian revealed in a podcast appearance that she wouldn’t have known she had Cushing syndrome if it weren’t for Internet trolls.

    In the Jan. 22 episode of Call Her Daddy, Schumer told host Alex Cooper that “a year ago, the Internet really came for me,” referring to commenters who harshly criticized her face’s suddenly swollen appearance.

    The Trainwreck actress said she ignored the comments at first — that is, until actual physicians began to comment with possible diagnoses based on the swelling she experienced. “Doctors were chiming in in the comments,” she told Cooper, 30, “and they were like, ‘No, no … something’s really up. Your face looks so crazy.’ “

    Some of the medical experts weighing in, Schumer recalled, thought she might have Cushing syndrome, which occurs when the stress hormone cortisol remains in the body for too long, according to Mayo Clinic. It is caused by taking steroids for an extended period of time and leads to symptoms including weight gain, acne and distinctive facial swelling that is referred to as “moon face.”

    “At first,” Schumer said, she thought, “F— off,” but then realized that the online diagnosis may have some validity after all.

    The star had been getting steroid injections to treat the scars that were left from her breast reduction and Cesarean section — she welcomed son Gene, 5, with husband Chris Fischer in 2019 — and “it gave me this thing called Cushing syndrome — which I wouldn’t have known if the internet hadn’t come for me so hard,” she explained.

    Later in the discussion, Schumer explained that she “got rid” of her Cushing symptoms, but before she got in front of the cameras for her upcoming comedy Kinda Pregnant, she was feeling vulnerable where her on-screen appearance was concerned.

    “I was feeling really down on myself before I started filming this movie,” she told the Call Her Daddy host. “I was really having trouble figuring out how I was going to star in a movie while I had this going on.”

    But, Schumer recalled, all it took was a friend — director Lorraine Caffery, to be exact — to get her back to the right headspace to tackle the role. “I just needed one person to just amp me up,” she said.

  • Starbucks posts smaller-than-expected sales drop amid turnaround effort | Starbucks


    Starbucks reassured Wall Street with a smaller-than-expected drop in comparable sales, an early sign that its efforts to revive sluggish demand could be bearing fruit.

    The world’s largest coffee chain, which earlier this month announced that people using its cafes cross North America need to buy something, is in the midst of a turnaround bid to win back customers.

    Brian Niccol, who joined the firm as chief executive in September, has said Starbucks needs to “fundamentally change” its strategy. Changes have included the rollout of a simpler menu, ceramic cups, refills and condiment bars, and a drive to reduce wait times to under four minutes.

    Global same-store sales at Starbucks fell 4% in its fiscal first quarter, the three months ending 29 December. Analysts had expected a 4.6% fall, according to data compiled by LSEG.

    Comparable sales fell 4% in North America, compared with expectations of a 4.7% fall. Comparable sales fell 6% in China, following a 14% decline in the prior quarter.

    Shares in the company’s shares rose 4% during after-hours trading on Wall Street. They have gained almost 30% since Niccol, credited with reviving burrito chain Chipotle Mexican Grill, was first announced as the new boss last August.

    “While we’re only one quarter into our turnaround, we’re moving quickly to act on the ‘Back to Starbucks’ efforts and we’ve seen a positive response,” he said.

    “We believe this is the fundamental change in strategy needed to solve our underlying issues, restore confidence in our brand and return the business to sustainable, long-term growth.”

    (Reuters) -Starbucks reported a smaller-than-expected fall in first-quarter comparable sales on Tuesday, indicating early signs of success for CEO Brian Niccol’s turnaround efforts for the coffee chain battling sluggish demand.

    The company’s shares shares rose 4% in extended trading. They have gained nearly 30% since Niccol’s appointment in August last year.

    Niccol, credited with reviving burrito chain Chipotle Mexican Grill, has looked to return Starbucks to its coffee house roots in the U.S. by rolling out a simpler menu, ceramic cups, refills and condiment bars. He also addressed a key concern of diners by reducing wait times at the cafes to under four minutes.

    Starbucks’ global same-store sales fell 4% in its fiscal first quarter, compared with analysts’ expectations of a 4.6% fall, according to data compiled by LSEG.

    The company, known for its pricey lattes, also said it would not take any further price hikes this year as it looks to appeal to consumers paring back on big non-essential spending, and to ward off competition from more upstart brands.

    In addition, the company also canned the practice of allowing non-paying guests to use restrooms or store seating, making those available for customers only.

    The company’s North America comparable sales fell 4% in the three months ending Dec. 29, Niccol’s first full quarter at the helm, compared with expectations of a 4.7% fall.

    Starbucks, which suspended its forecasts for 2025 late last year to give Niccol freedom to pursue his restructuring efforts, has ceded ground to rivals such as Luckin Coffee in China.

    Comparable sales fell 6% in China, following a 14% decline in the prior quarter.

    Noem made the announcement on X just after 6 a.m. The raid comes as the federal crackdown on undocumented immigrants with criminal records ramps up. Immigration and Customs Enforcement reported over 1,100 single-day arrests on Monday.

    Video showed the apparent immigration enforcement operation in the Highbridge section of the Bronx, where agents were seen escorting a person out of a building in handcuffs into a vehicle with flashing lights waiting outside.

    Mayor Adams on NYC raid

    New York City Mayor Eric Adams issued a statement on the federal operation: “I directed the NYPD to coordinate with DHS’ Homeland Security Investigations and other federal law enforcement agencies — as allowed by law — to conduct a targeted operation to arrest an individual connected with multiple violent crimes, both here in New York and in Aurora, Colorado, including burglary, kidnapping, extortion, firearms possession, menacing with a firearm, crime of violence, and other charges.”

    Additional photos showed a massive law enforcement presence on the ground, with Noem overseeing the operation nearby. She said the person with “kidnapping, assault & burglary charges is now in custody – thanks to @ICE.”

    Armed members of the Venezuelan gang were caught on video entering an Aurora apartment complex unit last summer in footage that drew Trump’s attention during the presidential campaign.

    “We are doing this right – doing exactly what President @realDonaldTrump promised the American people – making our streets safe,” Noem said in a Tuesday morning post on X.

    ICE raids

    By the numbers:

    In a Monday post on X, ICE reported 1,179 single-day arrests and lodged 853 detainers, which means “there’s probable cause to believe that the person is removable from the United States under federal immigration law.” 

    In the last week, the Department of Homeland Security said that “law enforcement officials have removed and returned 7,300 illegal aliens.” 

    Many of the ICE actions were not unusual. ICE averaged 311 daily arrests in the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30.

    But deportation efforts under the Trump administration should be more seamless, as it announced Friday that it was expanding the use of “expedited removal” authority so it can be used across the country starting right away. “Expedited removal” gives enforcement agencies broad authority to deport people without requiring them to appear before an immigration judge. There are limited exceptions, including if they express fear of returning home and pass an initial screening interview for asylum.
