  • Mookie Betts Wins 2024 Babe Ruth Postseason MVP Award

The New York chapter of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America voted Mookie Betts as the winner of the 2024 Babe Ruth Award, which is presented annually to a player deemed postseason MVP.

Betts was formally recognized on Saturday night during the 100th annual New York Baseball Writers’ Dinner at the Hilton in Midtown Manhattan, where all 2024 BBWAA winners were celebrated.

The Los Angeles Dodgers also had winners in Shohei Ohtani, the 2024 National League MVP, and Freddie Freeman and his family receiving the Arthur and Milton Richman You Gotta Have Heart Award, which is presented annually to a member of the baseball community who has overcome difficult circumstances.

None of the three were in attendance, however. Ohtani recorded a video message for his NL MVP acceptance speech as he remained in Southern California due to being impacted by the recent wildfires.

Meanwhile, Betts is visiting Japan and recently surprised a group of students at an elementary school.

Betts being voted the Babe Ruth Award winner caps off a memorable year that saw him also play at an MVP-caliber level prior to suffering a fractured left hand upon being hit by a pitch.

    Mookie Betts’ postseason stats

Betts was facing plenty of scrutiny and pressure heading into the 2024 postseason and he’d fallen well short of expectations in years prior.

He went hitless in the first two games against the San Diego Padres — albeit getting robbed of a home run by Jurickson Profar making a tremendous catch — but caught fire to help the Dodgers advance past the NL Division Series and eventually win the World Series by defeating the New York Yankees.

“I know he has the talent. Obviously he’s not afraid of the situation. So for me it’s more of just go out there and compete your tail off,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said during the NLDS.

“The last few, I think there was something that was bleeding into the mindset, which it’s up to all of us to make sure that he’s in a good headspace to go out there and compete and not get too worried about each particular at-bat. … I’ll have a little conversation with him.

“And the funny thing is you look at postseason performers, it’s not that they over-performed their career stat line in the regular season. What they’ve done is that they do what they’ve done in the regular season. But on that stage they’re considered postseason players.

“So in this particular case, all we expect Mookie is to be the same player he is in the regular season. And that’s it.”

Partly behind taking hundreds of swings each day and aided by Brent Honeywell’s intentional throwing strategy during live batting practice, Betts hit .290./.387/.565 with five doubles, four home runs, 16 RBI and 11 walks over 16 postseason games.

In a stunning turn of events, Mookie Betts has been named the 2024 Babe Ruth Postseason MVP Award winner. The star outfielder had an incredible performance throughout the postseason, leading his team to victory and solidifying his place as one of the greatest players of his generation.

Betts’ clutch hitting, exceptional fielding, and overall leadership on and off the field were instrumental in his team’s success. His ability to come through in the biggest moments earned him the prestigious award, making him only the third player in history to win it multiple times.

Fans and analysts alike are in awe of Betts’ talent and determination, and many are already calling him a future Hall of Famer. With this latest accolade added to his already impressive resume, there is no doubt that Mookie Betts is a force to be reckoned with in the world of baseball. Congratulations to Mookie Betts on this well-deserved honor!

  • Kyle Hamilton, Marcus Freeman and representation in their postseason runs — Andscape

The paths of Baltimore Ravens safety Kyle Hamilton and Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman only crossed for one season in South Bend, Indiana, yet they both find themselves in a unique position this postseason.

A small percentage of the football population identifies as both Black and Asian American. In 2023, the Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport reported that 0.1% percent of players in the NFL were Asian. The NCAA reported in 2024, that 1% of Division I head coaches across all sports were Asian.

Hamilton, whose Ravens play the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Divisional Round on Sunday, and Freeman, whose Fighting Irish face Ohio State in the College Football Playoff national championship on Monday, are both representing their Black and Korean heritage proudly in their respective playoff runs.

“I think one, the success of anybody, any minority in a position of power is cool to see, especially at an institution like Notre Dame,” said Hamilton, who played at Notre Dame from 2019 to 2021. Freeman was defensive coordinator in South Bend during Hamilton’s junior year. “You know, it’s a predominantly white catholic school and to have a Black Korean head coach leading the team to the championship, it’s pretty cool when you step back and look at it.”

Freeman and Hamilton are two men doing what they love all while proving to the next generation of Black and Asian athletes that it’s possible. Freeman will make history as the first Black and Asian head coach to make it to the Football Bowl Subdivision national championship.

“If me being a Black and Asian head coach in the college football national championship gives others that opportunity, then that’s awesome,” Freeman said in a news conference Jan. 12. “I’ve always said this: I don’t want this to be about me. I want this to be about others, and others getting opportunities and our team.”

In September 2024, ESPN NFL analyst Mina Kimes and Hamilton connected on her podcast over their shared Korean heritage. They talked about growing up with Korean moms, Asian presence in the NFL and even had Freeman join as a guest.

“There was a moment where I think all of the Koreans kind of figured it out and were sort of rooting for Notre Dame, because you know how Koreans are, we figure out someone is Korean and we are in the tank for them, forever.” Kimes said on her show to both Hamilton and Freeman.

Said Freeman on the show: “You don’t meet just half-Korean, or Korean people every day. I remember when I got a chance to figure out Kyle’s background, you know now we have a common place, and understanding and I said, ‘we are both Blasians now,’ [I] was able to see pictures of his mom and showed him pictures of my mom and those are things that truly help you form a relationship.”

Kimes asked Freeman at what moment he realized Hamilton was “him.” His response? An unforgettable interception at Florida State. As Freeman is set to make history on Monday, Andscape asked Hamilton the inverse: Was there a specific moment he realized Freeman was a championship-level coach?

“I think from just Day 1 he kind of brought in a different energy and a standard when it came to defense, because he was only my defensive coordinator when I was there,” Hamilton said. “He created a bunch of things that we could latch onto throughout the year no matter what we’re struggling with, whether it be a saying or a quote. We would come in and out just put our heads down and work and he was working right with us and everybody on staff. I was just appreciative of that and that consistency.”

After his junior season at Notre Dame, Hamilton entered the 2022 NFL draft and was selected in the first round (No. 14 overall) by the Ravens. His first three seasons in the league have been a compilation of league and conference honors including PFWA All-Rookie Team honors in 2022, two Pro Bowl selections and a 2024 AP All-Pro selection.

But he left the Ravens practice facility on Wednesday sporting a navy backpack with the Notre Dame leprechaun.

“…Just being [and feeling] prideful for my school, they made it to the championship,” Hamilton said. “I think they still have some work to do still; you know we’re not just satisfied going there, we need to win the game. Hopefully we get that done.”

Hamilton has used his platform to rep his Korean heritage, including adding a Korean flag sticker on the back of his helmet last season as a part of the NFL’s heritage initiative

“My mother is actually South Korean and was born there. [She] came to the states when she was about 13. Growing up, we were immersed in the culture, my brother and I,” Hamilton shared in a video on baltimoreravens.com.

Freeman and Hamilton are a tale of a coach and player striving to excel, all while being examples of positive representation. Hamilton has spoken openly about the responsibility and opportunity to represent his heritage proudly.

“It’s not something that I am always thinking about, but it’s something that I am always conscious of,” Hamilton said. “I know that, you know, many people may see me and see somebody that they can identify with in a lot of different cultures. It’s pretty cool to have that. Knowing that people of all ages, all races, can look to me and see somebody that they can aspire to be and it’s just a blessing to be in this position.”

Cayla Sweazie is a women’s and college sports reporter. She is a former HBCU athlete (Go Bears) with a passion for giving student-athletes a platform to share their stories.

As Notre Dame’s Kyle Hamilton and Marcus Freeman gear up for their respective postseason runs, their presence on the big stage is not only a testament to their talent and hard work, but also to the importance of representation in college football.

Hamilton, a standout safety for the Fighting Irish, has been a force to be reckoned with all season long. His versatility, athleticism, and football IQ have made him one of the most dynamic players in the country. As Notre Dame looks to make a statement in the upcoming College Football Playoff, Hamilton will undoubtedly be a key player to watch.

On the coaching side, Marcus Freeman has made waves in his first season as Notre Dame’s defensive coordinator. His innovative schemes and ability to connect with players have been instrumental in the team’s success. With his leadership, the Fighting Irish defense has been among the best in the nation, setting the stage for a strong postseason run.

But beyond their individual accomplishments, Hamilton and Freeman’s presence in the postseason spotlight is a reminder of the importance of representation in college football. As Black men in a predominantly white sport, they serve as role models for young athletes who may not always see themselves reflected in the game.

Their success challenges stereotypes and opens doors for future generations of players and coaches. It’s a reminder that diversity and inclusion are not just buzzwords, but essential components of a thriving and equitable sports landscape.

So as we cheer on Kyle Hamilton, Marcus Freeman, and the rest of the Fighting Irish in their postseason pursuits, let’s also celebrate the power of representation and the impact it can have on the world of college football. #GoIrish #RepresentationMatters.

  • How Denver can make postseason in Week 18

How Denver can make postseason in Week 18

The Denver Broncos are currently on the outside looking in when it comes to the NFL postseason, but with Week 18 looming, there is still a chance for the team to make a late push for the playoffs. Here are a few ways that Denver can secure a postseason spot in the final week of the regular season:

    1. Win Out: The most obvious way for Denver to make the postseason is to win their final game of the season against the Kansas City Chiefs. A win would not only improve their overall record, but it would also give them a much-needed boost in the AFC standings.

    2. Get Help from Other Teams: In addition to winning their own game, the Broncos will need some help from other teams in order to secure a playoff spot. They will need a few key teams to lose in Week 18 in order to improve their chances of making the postseason.

    3. Improve Their Conference Record: The Broncos currently have a 6-5 record in conference play, which is tied with several other teams in the AFC. In order to break the tie and secure a playoff spot, Denver will need to improve their conference record in Week 18.

Overall, the Denver Broncos still have a chance to make the postseason in Week 18, but it will require a combination of winning their own game, getting help from other teams, and improving their conference record. With everything on the line, the Broncos will need to bring their A-game in order to secure a playoff spot in the final week of the regular season.

  • Fans mock Aaron Judge’s postseason

    Fans mock Aaron Judge’s postseason

Talking about Aaron Judge is to refer to one of the legends of the New York Yankees, and he is one of the leaders of the Bronx Bombers’ attack, plenty of reasons to win the recognition as the American League’s Most Valuable Player in 2024.

Judge hit 58 home runs and 144 RBIs, leading the Yankees to the World Series after a 14-year absence. Unfortunately, in the postseason, Judge’s performance was not the same as he hit three home runs in 49 at-bats.

“I’m not doing my job right now. I have to be better,” Judge said at the end of the World Series.

Aaron Judge made history by becoming the fastest player to reach 300 home runs in MLB in the New York Yankees’ victory over the Chicago White Sox last August, which augured a dream postseason for the Big Apple team.

    Social media destroys Jodge

Recently, Fireside Yankees, a popular social media page, shared on social media Judge’s career performance during the campaign and consider him to be the best hitter in Major League Baseball history.

However, this publication was not to the liking of Yankees fans, who believe that Judge should perform in the same way in all games and not only in the regular season.

From claims of “What did the best hitter in baseball do in the postseason?” to messages highlighting Juan Soto’s postseason work over Judge’s.

“That moment when the haters think they’ll be lost without Soto,” says another message, where fans not only complain about Judge’s performance, but also that the Yankees did not retain Juan Soto

It’s no secret that New York Yankees’ outfielder Aaron Judge has been struggling in the postseason, and fans are not holding back in their criticism. After a disappointing performance in the AL Wild Card game and a lackluster showing in the ALDS, Judge has been the target of mockery and ridicule from fans on social media.

Many fans have taken to Twitter to express their frustration with Judge’s postseason performance, with some calling for him to be benched and others questioning his ability to perform under pressure. Some have even gone as far as creating memes and gifs poking fun at Judge’s struggles at the plate.

While it’s certainly disappointing to see one of the team’s star players struggle in the postseason, it’s important to remember that baseball is a game of ups and downs. Judge has proven himself to be a talented player throughout his career, and there’s no doubt that he has the potential to bounce back and contribute to the team’s success in the postseason.

As fans, it’s important to support our players through thick and thin, and to remember that everyone has off days. Let’s continue to cheer on Aaron Judge and the rest of the Yankees as they navigate their way through the postseason and strive for another World Series title.

  • Notre Dame Looks To Defeat Georgia And Win Biggest Postseason Game In 31 Years

Notre Dame Looks To Defeat Georgia And Win Biggest Postseason Game In 31 Years

Notre Dame football is steeped in nostalgia. The Fighting Irish were the first truly national program, dating back to the 1920s when New York Herald Tribune sportswriter Grantland Rice dubbed Notre Dame’s backfield the “Four Horsemen.” They had fans across the country, most of whom were so-called subway alumni, meaning they didn’t graduate from the University but still followed the football team religiously.

While Notre Dame continues to embrace its history, the Fighting Irish are not just stuck in the past. Instead, the school has invested heavily in football, signing coach Marcus Freeman this month to a lucrative contract extension, upgrading its facilities, adding transfers who meet its qualifications, embracing Name, Image and Likeness and committing to spend most of the $20.5 million in revenue sharing from the expected House settlement on football players.

Still, as No. 7 seed Notre Dame (12-1) prepares to face No. 2 seed Georgia (11-2) on Wednesday night in a College Football Playoff quarterfinal in New Orleans, the Fighting Irish can’t escape its three decades long futility in major postseason games. Yes, Notre Dame defeated Indiana, 27-17, in the CFP opener on Dec. 20. But despite their success this season, the Hoosiers are historically a weak program that has lost the most games in Division 1 history.

The last time Notre Dame has won a significant postseason game? That occurred on Jan. 1, 1994, when the No. 4 Fighting Irish defeated No. 7 Texas A&M, 24-21, in the Cotton Bowl. Notre Dame finished the season with an 11-1 record and second in the Associated Press poll behind Florida State, a team the Fighting Irish had defeated that season in what was billed as the Game of the Century. But the voters penalized Notre Dame for losing, 41-39, to Boston College in the regular season finale and kept Florida State atop the poll after the Seminoles defeated previously unbeaten Nebraska in the Orange Bowl. Florida State finished first in the coaches’ poll, as well, making the Seminoles the unanimous national champion.

“I was very disappointed that it wasn’t a split poll,” Skip Holtz, Notre Dame’s offensive coordinator that year, told me in 2014. “It’s hard to say Florida State didn’t deserve it, but I think it’s awfully tough to make the argument that Notre Dame didn’t deserve a share of it when we won head-to-head.”

During the past 31 years, Notre Dame has gone winless in its 10 major bowl and postseason games, including a 42-14 loss to Alabama in the national title game in January 2013, a 30-3 loss to Clemson in the CFP semifinals in December 2018 and a 31-14 loss to Alabama in the CFP semifinals in January 2021. Most of those losses have been blowouts, including 41-9 to Oregon State in the 2001 Fiesta Bowl and 41-14 to LSU in the 2007 Sugar Bowl. Bob Davie and Charlie Weis, Notre Dame’s coaches in those games, didn’t last much longer and were fired after disappointing tenures. Tyrone Willingham, who replaced Davie in 2002, was also fired.

Brian Kelly, who replaced Weis after the 2009 season, brought back some consistency to the program. During Kelly’s 12 seasons, he surpassed Knute Rockne for the most victories (113) for a Notre Dame coach. The Fighting Irish won at least 10 games and finished in the top 12 of the Associated Press poll in each of Kelly’s final five seasons before he departed for LSU after the 2021 season.

Marcus Freeman, Kelly’s replacement, coached his first game in the Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 1, 2022. At halftime, the Fighting Irish led Oklahoma State by 14 points, but they ended up losing, 37-35, extending their streak in major postseason games.

Now in his third season, Freeman has Notre Dame in position to put an end to the futility. Since losing to Northern Illinois in early September, the Fighting Irish have won 11 consecutive games. Notre Dame has outscored its opponents by an average of 25 points per game, the largest margin in Football Bowl Subdivision. The Fighting Irish rank fourth in the nation in scoring offense (38.8 points per game) and third in defense (13.8 points per game).

If the Fighting Irish defeat Georgia, they will have a school-record 13 victories. More importantly, they will have advanced to the CFP semifinals, where they will face Penn State or Boise State in Miami on Jan. 9. They will also have a shot at winning the program’s first national title since 1988.

Still, Notre Dame is not getting ahead of itself. While Georgia is a slight one-point favorite on Wednesday, has lost two games this season and lost starting quarterback Carson Beck with a season-ending injury, the Bulldogs have had more success than any program in recent years. Georgia won national titles in the 2021 and 2022 seasons and lost just once last season. The Bulldogs are accustomed to winning these big games.

“(Georgia) has made the journey that we’re trying to make,” Notre Dame defensive coordinator Al Golden said at a recent press conference. “They made that climb. If there’s any side note, that would be it — that we have to learn how to do this, how to go into these environments and execute at a really high level, regardless of the circumstance and regardless of in this case who we’re playing. It’s always going to be about us and how we execute and how we prepare. That will be no different here this week.”

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish are gearing up for their biggest postseason game in over three decades as they prepare to take on the Georgia Bulldogs in the College Football Playoff semi-finals.

It has been 31 years since Notre Dame last won a national championship, and the team is hungry to make a statement and bring home the title this year. Led by head coach Brian Kelly and star quarterback Ian Book, the Fighting Irish have had a strong season, finishing with a 10-1 record and securing a spot in the playoffs.

However, Georgia will be a tough opponent to beat. The Bulldogs are known for their strong defense and explosive offense, making them a formidable opponent for Notre Dame. But the Fighting Irish are confident in their abilities and believe they have what it takes to come out on top.

With a win over Georgia, Notre Dame would not only advance to the national championship game but also make a statement to the college football world that they are a force to be reckoned with. The players and coaching staff are fired up and ready to give it their all in what promises to be an exciting and intense matchup.

Stay tuned as Notre Dame looks to defeat Georgia and make history in the biggest postseason game in over three decades. Go Fighting Irish! #GoIrish #BeatGeorgia #CFP2021

  • NFL Playoff Guide: Postseason bracket much clearer with 1 week remaining in regular season

NFL Playoff Guide: Postseason bracket much clearer with 1 week remaining in regular season

It’s Week 18 of the NFL season, which means just one more weekend remains before postseason action begins.

The two-time defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs and star quarterback Patrick Mahomes look like a formidable opponent once again and have already clinched the No. 1 seed in the AFC bracket with a 15-1 record.

Over in the NFC, a crucial game awaits when the Minnesota Vikings (14-2) travel to face the Detroit Lions (14-2) on Sunday in a game that will decide the division winner, the No. 1 seed in the conference and home-field advantage until the Super Bowl.

Here are some more things to watch as the regular season winds down:

    NFL playoff picture

    AFC

Six of the seven spots in the playoff bracket are secure, though the seeding is still up for grabs in some situations. The Chiefs are the top seed while the Buffalo Bills (13-3) own the No. 2 spot. The Baltimore Ravens (11-5), Pittsburgh Steelers (10-6), Los Angeles Chargers (10-6) and Houston Texans (9-7) also know they have more football to play. The Ravens can clinch the No. 3 spot in the bracket with a win over the Browns. The Texans are locked into the No. 4 spot despite a worse record than some teams because they’ve clinched their division.

As for the seventh team, the Denver Broncos (9-7) are in good position though the Miami Dolphins (8-8) and Cincinnati Bengals (8-8) still have hope. The problem for the Dolphins and Bengals is the Broncos can earn the final spot with a win against Kansas City this weekend, and there’s not much incentive for the Chiefs to play their starters considering they’ve already got the No. 1 seed wrapped up.

    NFC

Much like the AFC, six of the seven spots are taken. The Vikings, Lions, Philadelphia Eagles (13-3), Green Bay Packers (11-5), Los Angeles Rams (10-6) and Washington Commanders (11-5) will be in the bracket. Minnesota and Detroit will duke it out for the No. 1 seed next Sunday while the loser falls all the way to No. 5. The Eagles have secured the No. 2 spot.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers (9-7) have the inside track for the final spot, needing a win over the New Orleans Saints this weekend to secure their place. If they lose, the Atlanta Falcons (8-8) could still sneak into the bracket if they beat the Carolina Panthers.

    NFL playoff format

The 14-team bracket enters its fifth season after debuting during the 2020 season. Seven teams advance to the postseason from both the AFC and the NFC.

The four division winners in each conference earn the top four seeds, ranked by their records. The last three teams are all wild-card selections, also ranked by record.

The format means the No. 1 seed in each conference is very important because it guarantees a wild card round bye and homefield advantage until the Super Bowl. For the other 12 teams in the opening round, the No. 7 seed travels to the No. 2 seed, No. 6 goes to No. 3 and No. 5 travels to No. 4.

    NFL playoff schedule

Jan. 11-13: Wild Card Round. Two games on Saturday, three on Sunday, one on Monday.

Jan. 18-19: Divisional Round. Two games on Saturday, two on Sunday.

Jan. 26: AFC and NFC Conference Championships.

Feb. 9: Super Bowl LIX at the Superdome in New Orleans.

    NFL playoff betting odds

According to BetMGM Sportsbook, the Chiefs are the favorites to win the Super Bowl at +375. The Lions are right behind them at +400 while the Bills are third at +550.

Playoff Scenarios: Washington Commanders’ Road to the Postseason

As the NFL regular season winds down, the Washington Commanders find themselves in the thick of the playoff race. With just a few games remaining, the Commanders are in a prime position to secure a spot in the postseason. Let’s take a look at the various playoff scenarios that could see Washington make a push for the playoffs.

The Commanders currently sit at 6-7, which places them third in the NFC East division. While they are behind the Dallas Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles, Washington is still very much in the hunt for a wildcard spot in the playoffs. With a strong finish to the season, the Commanders could potentially secure a wildcard berth and extend their season.

In order to make the playoffs, the Commanders will need to continue their recent success on both sides of the ball. Quarterback Taylor Heinicke has been solid for Washington, throwing for over 2,500 yards and 15 touchdowns this season. Running back Antonio Gibson has also been a key contributor, rushing for over 700 yards and scoring 8 touchdowns. The defense, led by star defensive end Chase Young, will need to continue to create turnovers and pressure opposing quarterbacks in order to give Washington a chance to win games.

Looking ahead, Washington’s schedule is favorable for making a playoff push. They have upcoming games against the Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles, and New York Giants, all of which are divisional matchups. Wins in these games would not only help Washington’s playoff chances but would also give them momentum heading into the postseason.

In addition to winning games, the Commanders will also need some help from other teams in order to secure a playoff spot. With a number of teams vying for wildcard berths in the NFC, Washington will need to keep a close eye on the standings and hope that other teams falter down the stretch.

Overall, the Washington Commanders have a legitimate chance at making the playoffs this season. With a strong finish to the season and some help from other teams, Washington could find themselves playing postseason football for the first time since 2015. Fans of the Commanders will be eagerly watching as the team makes their push for the playoffs in the final weeks of the regular season.

As the NFL regular season winds down, teams are jockeying for position in the playoff hunt. One team that finds itself on the outside looking in is the Seattle Seahawks. With a 7-8 record, the Seahawks are currently on the outside of the playoff picture, but they still have a chance to make a late-season push for a postseason berth.

One of the key factors in the Seahawks’ playoff hopes lies in the hands of their division rival, the Arizona Cardinals. The Cardinals currently sit atop the NFC West with a 10-5 record, and a win in their final game of the season would secure them a spot in the playoffs. However, if the Cardinals were to lose to the Los Angeles Rams in their last game, it would open the door for the Seahawks to sneak into the postseason.

The Seahawks have had an up-and-down season, with some impressive wins and some disappointing losses. Despite their inconsistency, they have shown flashes of their potential, particularly on offense. Quarterback Russell Wilson is still one of the most dangerous playmakers in the league, and he has a talented group of receivers to throw to, including DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Seahawks have struggled at times, but they have shown improvement in recent weeks. The return of safety Jamal Adams has provided a spark for the defense, and they will need to continue to play at a high level if they hope to make a playoff run.

While the Seahawks are not in control of their own destiny, they can still make the postseason with some help from the Cardinals. If Arizona were to stumble in their final game, the Seahawks would need to take care of business against the San Francisco 49ers to secure a wildcard spot in the playoffs.

It’s been a rollercoaster season for the Seahawks, but they still have a chance to salvage their year with a playoff berth. They will be keeping a close eye on the Cardinals’ final game, knowing that their postseason hopes could hinge on the outcome. If the Cardinals were to falter, the Seahawks will need to be ready to capitalize and make the most of their opportunity to extend their season.
