How large of a contract will the artist formerly known as ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ land? That remains to be seen. However, based on the quarterback market over the last two years, many predict the 25-year-old signal caller could be paid close to, if not more than $50 million per season.
And that includes ESPN’s Dan Graziano, who predicted the figures of Purdy’s impending deal with the 49ers in his latest 2025 offseason predictions column.
Graziano’s prediction:Four years, $196 million, $112 million guaranteed — which would be 10th among quarterbacks in average annual value.
“The threat of the franchise tag certainly gives the 49ers some leverage, and if Purdy is not determined to play hardball and max out his contract in the upper-$50-million-per-year range, there’s a deal to be made here,” Graziano wrote.
“Some of the people I talked to expect that the framework would likely build out from the contract Daniel Jones signed with the Giants two years ago (four years, $160 million with $81 million guaranteed). But it would obviously be adjusted upward for inflation and based on superior performance.”
This contract would be worth an average annual value of $49 million, which — as Graziano pointed out — is the 10th-highest behind Dallas’ Dak Prescott ($60M), Jacksonville’s Trevor Lawrence ($55M), Green Bay’s Jordan Love ($55M), Cincinnati’s Joe Burrow ($5M), Miami’s Tua Tagovailoa ($53.1M), Detroit’s Jared Goff ($53M), Los Angeles Chargers’ Justin Herbert ($52.5M), Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson ($52M) and Philadelphia’s Jalen Hurts ($51M).
Purdy is coming off a down 2024 NFL season, completing 300 of 455 passes (65.9 percent) for 3,864 yards with 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while recording 323 yards and five touchdowns on the ground in 15 games this season.
He did, however, lead the 49ers to consecutive NFC Championship Game appearances in each of his first two seasons, one of which resulted in a near Super Bowl LVIII win over the Kansas City Chiefs last year, something most of the quarterbacks on the aforementioned list have not done for their respective teams.
In a stunning move, the San Francisco 49ers have reportedly signed quarterback Brock Purdy to a massive four-year, $196 million contract, according to ESPN predictions. The deal, which would make Purdy one of the highest-paid players in the league, is a clear sign of the team’s confidence in the young signal-caller.
Purdy, who was drafted by the 49ers in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft, has shown immense potential in his short time in the league. With a strong arm and impressive accuracy, he has quickly become a fan favorite in San Francisco.
ESPN’s prediction of Purdy’s massive contract is a testament to his potential and the high expectations the team has for him. If he can continue to develop and improve, he could lead the 49ers to great success in the coming seasons.
Fans will be eagerly awaiting official confirmation of Purdy’s contract, but if ESPN’s prediction is accurate, it could be a game-changer for the 49ers and their quest for another Super Bowl title. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

Noted investor and author Robert Kiyosaki has forecast a potential Bitcoin BTC/USD crash, which he sees as a chance to amass more wealth.
What Happened: Kiyosaki, known for his best-seller “Rich Dad Poor Dad,” warned of a possible Bitcoin crash. This warning came after a 4.20% decline in the leading cryptocurrency, which fell below its $106,000 price point on Friday.
Kiyosaki’s cautionary statement was a reaction to U.S. President Donald Trump‘s decision to impose 25% tariffs on U.S. trade partners Canada and Mexico, and a 10% tariff on China.
This decision resulted in a 300 point (0.7%) fall in the Dow Jones Industrial Average index, and significant losses for the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq 100.
In a post on X, Kiyosaki said, “Trump tariffs begin: gold, silver, Bitcoin may crash.” He indicated his plan to purchase more Bitcoin if prices plummet, seeing it as an opportunity to grow his wealth. However, he also pointed out the U.S. national debt as a major problem that Bitcoin might not be able to address.
TRUMP TARRIFS BEGIN: Gold, silver, Bitcoin may crash. GOOD. Will buy more after prices crash. Real problem is DEBT….which will only get worse. CRASHES mean assets are on sale. Time to get richer.
Despite Kiyosaki’s warning, Bitcoin has started to rebound, and the effects on gold and silver have been negligible. The U.S. national debt, on the other hand, continues to escalate, surpassing $36.4 trillion.
Why It Matters: Kiyosaki’s prediction of a Bitcoin crash and his intention to buy more of the cryptocurrency if prices fall, highlight the volatility and potential opportunities in the crypto market. His comments also underscore the ongoing concerns about the U.S. national debt, which continues to soar despite economic measures.
While Bitcoin has started to recover, the impact of the tariffs and the national debt on the economy and the crypto market remain to be seen.
Robert Kiyosaki, the renowned author of “Rich Dad Poor Dad,” has made a bold prediction in light of President Trump’s recent tariffs on China. Kiyosaki believes that gold, silver, and Bitcoin are headed for a crash, but he sees this as a prime buying opportunity for savvy investors.
In a recent tweet, Kiyosaki stated, “Trump’s tariffs make gold, silver, Bitcoin crash & a buying opportunity. When price of gold hits $1,000 per oz and silver $10 per oz, I will back up the truck. Buy more gold, silver, Bitcoin. Dollar is dying. Silver best buy.”
Kiyosaki’s prediction comes at a time of economic uncertainty as trade tensions between the US and China continue to escalate. Many investors have turned to safe-haven assets like gold, silver, and Bitcoin as a hedge against market volatility.
While Kiyosaki’s prediction may seem bold, he has a track record of being ahead of the curve when it comes to financial trends. Investors looking to capitalize on potential market dips may want to take heed of his advice and consider adding to their positions in gold, silver, and Bitcoin during this turbulent time.
As always, it’s important for investors to do their own research and consult with a financial advisor before making any investment decisions. But for those willing to take a calculated risk, Kiyosaki’s prediction could prove to be a lucrative opportunity in the long run.
CHICAGO (CBS) — Woodstock Willie has once again predicted an early spring Sunday morning during the 2025 Groundhog Day celebration in northwest suburban Woodstock.
A large crowd gathered to see if they would need to hold onto their coats for a few more weeks or start getting their spring clothes.
The annual event took place at the site of the iconic movie Groundhog Day, which starred Bill Murray.
Last year, Willie also predicted an early spring.
Willie’s prediction is opposite Punxsutawney Phil, who predicted six more weeks of winter after seeing his shadow at Gobbler’s Knob.
Jeramie Bizzle is a web producer for CBS Chicago. Jeramie began working with CBS Chicago as an intern in 2017 and returned as a full-time Web Producer in 2021. He has previously written for the Austin Weekly Newspaper, OakPark.com and Sportskeeda.
Woodstock Willie, the beloved groundhog from Woodstock, Illinois, did not see his shadow this morning on Groundhog Day, February 2nd. This means that according to folklore, we can expect an early spring this year.
The tradition of Groundhog Day dates back to ancient European weather lore, where it was believed that if a groundhog emerged from its burrow and saw its shadow, there would be six more weeks of winter. If it did not see its shadow, an early spring was predicted.
Woodstock Willie, who has been making weather predictions for over 30 years, delighted the crowd gathered to see him this morning when he did not see his shadow. This news has brought joy to many who are tired of the cold winter weather and are ready for warmer days ahead.
So, let’s celebrate this good news and start looking forward to an early spring! Thank you, Woodstock Willie, for bringing us this hopeful forecast. #WoodstockWillie #EarlySpring #GroundhogDay

Groundhog Day 2025 brought conflicting predictions from two famous groundhogs – Woodstock Willie and Punxsutawney Phil. While Woodstock Willie did not see his shadow, predicting an early spring, Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow and forecasted six more weeks of winter.
This rare occurrence has left many wondering which groundhog to believe. Will Woodstock Willie’s prediction come true, bringing warmer weather sooner than expected? Or will Punxsutawney Phil’s forecast hold true, extending the winter season for a few more weeks?
Only time will tell which groundhog was right, but one thing is for sure – Groundhog Day continues to be a fun and quirky tradition that captures the attention of people all across the country. Let’s hope that whichever prediction comes true, we can all enjoy the changing seasons and embrace whatever weather comes our way.

Punxsutawney Phil, the famous groundhog weather watcher, was pulled from his warm burrow this morning and saw his shadow, predicting six more weeks of winter.
Each February 2, on Groundhog Day, the members of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club make the pilgrimage to Gobbler’s Knob — Phil’s official home. Legend has it, if he sees his shadow, six more weeks of winter are on the way. If he doesn’t, an early spring arrives.
In reality, winter will end on the spring equinox, known also as the vernal equinox, on March 20 at 5:01 a.m. ET, regardless of Sunday’s prediction. But weather conditions don’t always follow the timetable — and neither does Phil.
Phil has been prognosticating since the late 1800s but his recent predictions would have a better track record if he just flipped a coin: He has only been right about 35% of the time since 2005, according to data analyzed by NOAA.
Phil’s call for an early spring last year came true. February 2024 was the third warmest on record for the Lower 48. March also ended up much warmer than normal, according to NOAA data.
There are more consistent experts to turn to when Phil falters.
Meteorologists at the National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center produce forecasts for temperatures and precipitation across the US on timescales ranging from one week to more than a year.
Their outlook for February calls for above-average temperatures, or a potential early spring, from parts of the Rockies through the South and much of the East. Below-average temperatures from the Pacific Northwest into parts of the Midwest could be an extended winter. These regional trends are likely to continue into early spring, the center’s forecasts through April show.
Rounds of brutal cold have pounded the eastern half of the US all winter.
But the West has remained warm this winter following the warmest fall on record for the Lower 48. Phoenix, Las Vegas and San Francisco are just a few cities experiencing one of their 10-warmest winters.
Warmer winters aren’t a fluke, even when punctuated with seasonably appropriate cold. Winter has become the fastest-warming season for nearly 75% of the US as temperatures rise globally in a world warming due to fossil fuel pollution.
So, Phil’s prediction of six more weeks of winter is a bad bet in a warming world.
Each year on February 2nd, all eyes turn to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, as the world’s most famous groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, emerges from his burrow to predict the weather for the upcoming weeks. This morning, Phil saw his shadow, signaling six more weeks of winter.
According to folklore, if Phil sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter weather. If he doesn’t see his shadow, then spring will come early. This tradition dates back to the 1800s and continues to captivate audiences around the world.
While some may be disappointed by Phil’s prediction of extended winter weather, others embrace the opportunity to enjoy winter activities for a little while longer. Whether you’re a fan of snow or longing for warmer days, Punxsutawney Phil’s forecast serves as a fun and lighthearted reminder of the changing seasons.
As we settle in for a few more weeks of winter, let’s make the most of it by bundling up, sipping hot cocoa, and embracing the beauty of the season. Spring will be here before we know it, but in the meantime, let’s enjoy the cozy moments that winter has to offer.
Imagine coaching Lebron James and Co. in a franchise that has a golden history running behind it. The thought of it builds pressure, right? That is why long-time friend Matt Barnes has a word of caution for the new Lakers coach JJ Redick. Coaching a team that has one of the greatest players of all time is not an easy task. And the link between performance with job security is so high that what happens tomorrow you never know. But the 44-year-old shared what he feels about coaches, and what can be JJ’s future.
However, it is not just Barnes who thinks coaches are fired every year. Redick, who has a 4-year deal with the Lakers, too feels there is no security in this job. Although deciding the fortune of the 40-year-old is still premature, he must maintain a focused approach. More so, since he shares the locker room with LeBron and a talented Anthony Davis. And it takes ‘these many’ years to build a team and legacy, felt Barnes.
Responding to a question on N3ON podcast, Matt Barnes said, “It just takes time. You know, normally coaches get two, three, maybe four years to figure s**t out, but coaches are fired every other year, sometimes in their first year now. So, it’s just, we live in a, I want, you know, instant gratification.”

When Redick was brought up in the conversation as the top prospect of landing this job, many questioned his abilities. While many knew of his strategical methods, most wondered how an inexperienced coach can guide one of the most stories teams. But since JJ joined, the team has improved. But this is still early months to fire someone with an excuse of performance.
The answer to how long should someone take to build a team is debatable. While Tennessee-born has the basketball brain to hang around with the Lakers, it still lies in the management of what they expect from him. And there is no such tough conversation around him now, but recent history has kept coaches on their toes. While Barnes feels Orlando Magic No. 7 will get the respect he deserves, only time will tell where he heads. Especially because it is not easy to make an easy break in LA.
Lakers’ history with coaches, what leads to firing?

The Los Angeles Lakers, having second most NBA championships, are one of the most decorated teams in NBA history. With such records to defend, they have developed a reputation for not hesitating to fire head coaches when results don’t meet expectations. The benchmark is so high that they fired Darvin Ham after only two seasons. That too after taking the team to the NBA Finals in one and winning the NBA’s inaugural In-Season Tournament in another.
The story of Mike Brown is even worse. They hired Big Mike in 2011 but fired him after only five games of the 2012-2013 season, because of his poor 1-4 start. It is believed his firing was the third-fastest coaching change in NBA history. Then Mike D’Antoni, who joined the same season, too faced the same fate because of unmet expectations. The list is long, some lasted a few seasons, some a couple, but the benchmark for all remained the same: give results. Now Barnes’s words seem easy?

History shows the Lakers’ willingness to make quick decisions, as even a championship win, or a rebuilding phase does not guarantee job security within the franchise. And, in the world of sports, today’s heroes can quickly become tomorrow’s villains.

It’s a rollercoaster of glory and scrutiny! And with such a history, Matt Barnes’s former teammate JJ Redick only has two ways, either take the Lakers to the sky or face the axe like the rest.
Former NBA player Matt Barnes recently shared his thoughts on the uncertain future of veteran sharpshooter JJ Redick in a recent podcast episode. With the NBA trade deadline fast approaching and the New Orleans Pelicans struggling to find success this season, Redick’s name has been circulating in trade rumors.
Barnes pointed out that coaches are fired every year in the NBA, and players are often traded as a result of underperforming teams. He predicted that Redick could be on the move soon if the Pelicans continue to struggle and fail to make a playoff push.
Redick, known for his deadly three-point shooting and veteran leadership, could bring valuable experience and scoring to a contending team looking to bolster their roster for a playoff run. However, with the Pelicans currently sitting near the bottom of the Western Conference standings, it may be time for Redick to consider his options for the remainder of the season.
As the trade deadline approaches, all eyes will be on Redick and the Pelicans to see if any moves are made. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
An AI-powered tool developed by Telstra Health and RMIT University is transforming the way aged care facilities monitor and manage residents’ health by predicting risks such as falls, depression, and mortality.
With nearly half a million older Australians relying on aged care services as of June 30, 2023, the sector faces immense pressure to provide high-quality care.
In response, the collaboration between Telstra Health, RMIT University, and the Digital Health Cooperative Research Centre has resulted in an AI-driven tool designed to predict health risks and improve care outcomes in aged care settings.
Dr. Tabinda Sarwar, the project lead and data scientist from RMIT University, highlights the significance of the tool in alleviating the strain on nursing staff.
“The tool is capable of automatically monitoring both structured and free-text electronic patient records for 36 evidence-based indicators of deterioration,” Dr. Sarwar explains. “These indicators help predict various health risks, supporting nursing staff and improving resident care.”
Aged care nursing staff juggle numerous responsibilities, including daily caregiving and health monitoring.
Given the heavy workload, manual screening tools are not always practical. The new digital health tool is designed to reduce this burden by predicting adverse health events before they occur, making it a game-changer for aged care facilities.
The tool, which has won the 2024 Research Australia’s Digital & Data Health Innovation Award, analyzes daily operational data, including health-related notes and records.
Using advanced natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning techniques, the tool generates predictive alerts for potential health risks like falls, depression, and even mortality.
“By applying advanced data analysis to daily-collected information, we are able to predict signs of deterioration, giving care teams more time to respond,” Dr. Sarwar says. “This includes assessing risks such as falls, depression, and mortality based on data extracted from geriatric assessments, observation charts, and progress notes.”
The collaboration leveraged Telstra Health’s Clinical Manager system, which is already deployed in over 360 facilities across Australia, ensuring a broad reach.
The project also benefited from the expertise of nursing staff and the support of the Digital Health CRC, bridging the gap between academia and industry to create a highly effective solution.
Developing a universal tool that could address diverse challenges faced by nursing staff across different aged care facilities was a significant hurdle. “We had to design a solution that could have a meaningful impact on a larger population,” Dr. Sarwar explains.
To ensure the tool’s usability, the team conducted independent studies, using statistical and machine learning techniques to validate its performance and clinical feasibility.
The tool is currently being rolled out by Telstra Health, with several aged care homes already expressing interest in adopting it.
While its potential for expansion is significant, including applications in hospitals and other healthcare settings, the next steps depend on Telstra Health’s future strategies.
“This tool has the potential to extend to various healthcare settings and could play a key role in transforming the healthcare industry,” Dr. Sarwar concludes, emphasizing the wide-reaching impact of this AI-driven solution in improving healthcare outcomes for vulnerable populations.
AI tool predicts health risks in aged care, improving resident outcomes
A groundbreaking AI tool is revolutionizing the way healthcare professionals in aged care facilities can predict and prevent health risks among residents. By analyzing vast amounts of data, including medical records, vital signs, and even social interactions, this AI tool can identify trends and patterns that may indicate potential health issues before they escalate.
This innovative technology allows caregivers to proactively address health concerns, leading to better resident outcomes and improved quality of life. By predicting health risks early on, healthcare providers can intervene sooner, provide targeted care, and prevent unnecessary hospitalizations or complications.
Additionally, the AI tool can help optimize care plans and personalized interventions for each resident, ultimately enhancing their overall well-being and longevity. With access to real-time insights and predictive analytics, aged care facilities can deliver more proactive and efficient care, ultimately improving resident satisfaction and outcomes.
Overall, the implementation of this AI tool in aged care facilities represents a significant step forward in leveraging technology to enhance the quality of care for older adults. By harnessing the power of artificial intelligence, healthcare professionals can better anticipate and address health risks, ultimately leading to improved resident outcomes and a higher standard of care.
WWE legend Tommy Dreamer has made bold predictions for the upcoming Men’s Royal Rumble Match. He stated that Brock Lesnar and Randy Orton, who is currently on the sidelines could make their surprise returns this Saturday.
The Beast Incarnate has been absent from in-ring competition since his last match at SummerSlam 2023, where he lost to Cody Rhodes. As of now, the superstars confirmed to participate in the multi-man contest are CM Punk, John Cena, Carmelo Hayes, Jey Uso, Logan Paul, Shinsuke Nakamura, Roman Reigns, Chad Gable, Bron Breakker, Penta, Rey Mysterio, Sami Zayn, LA Knight, Drew McIntyre, and Seth Rollins.
In a recent episode of the Busted Open podcast, Tommy Dreamer speculated on potential surprise entrants in the 2025 Men’s Royal Rumble, naming Brock Lesnar and Randy Orton as possibilities. The veteran pointed to a recent Lesnar reference on RAW as a hint towards a possible appearance:
“I would say Brock [Lesnar] as well. Leaning into [Monday Night] RAW, there was another Brock reference and then I’d also say Randy [Orton],” Dreamer said. [From 02:14 to 02:25]

For those unaware, The Viper has been on the sidelines since November 2023. Kevin Owens hit the former WWE Champion with a vicious Piledriver. That being said, Orton is expected to return around the upcoming premium live event.
WWE veteran says Brock Lesnar has a “great chance” at winning the Royal Rumble
The Beast Incarnate and Gunther had a massive showdown in the 2023 Men’s Royal Rumble Match. This face-off between the two never materialized in a full storyline, as WWE failed to capitalize on the moment before Lesnar went on hiatus.
Last week on an edition of the Busted Open podcast, Bully Ray suggested a scenario where the 47-year-old superstar could be a surprise entrant in the Royal Rumble. Not only that but Brock Lesnar could win the 30-man over-the-top-rope elimination match, and then face Gunther for the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 41 in Las Vegas:
“[Do they pull the trigger and maybe Brock Lesnar is a surprise entrant in this year’s Royal Rumble? Brock Lesnar comes in, wins the Royal Rumble, and faces Gunther for the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania?] Great chance,” Ray said.
Only time will tell whether the multi-time WWE World Champion will finally make his much-awaited return in the Men’s Royal Rumble Match and main event The Showcase of The Immortals.

Former WWE wrestler and current wrestling personality Tommy Dreamer made a bold prediction recently, stating that both Brock Lesnar and an injured WWE star will make their return at the 2025 Royal Rumble.
Dreamer, known for his time in ECW and WWE, has a history of making accurate predictions in the wrestling world. While he didn’t specify which injured star he believes will make a comeback, fans are buzzing with excitement at the possibility of seeing Lesnar back in the ring.
Lesnar, a multiple-time WWE Champion and former UFC Heavyweight Champion, has been on hiatus from WWE since 2021. His return would undoubtedly shake up the landscape of professional wrestling and add even more star power to the already stacked Royal Rumble event.
As for the injured star, speculation has already begun about who it could be. With a number of prominent WWE superstars currently sidelined with injuries, the possibilities are endless.
Only time will tell if Dreamer’s prediction comes true, but one thing is for certain – the 2025 Royal Rumble is shaping up to be an event wrestling fans won’t want to miss.

While it’s easy to argue that should have been the least of their worries considering they finished the regular season tied for the seventh-best ERA (3.81) in Major League Baseball, one could only wonder what that number would have been if they had a competent fifth starter.
Taijuan Walker was a disaster last year, and the options they brought in to try and replace him proved they weren’t ready to be handed the ball every fifth day.
So, the Phillies acquired Jesus Luzardo from the Miami Marlins, buying low on the left-hander coming off an injury-riddled campaign last year even though he showed he’s one of the top arms in the sport when he was healthy in 2023.
On paper, the rotation looks set.
Zack Wheeler and Aaron Nola will lead the unit with Ranger Suarez, Cristopher Sanchez and Luzardo slotted somewhere in the mix wherever it makes sense to deploy the three lefties.
When he arrives, that will give the Phillies six starting pitchers, and since they are unlikely to utilize a six-man rotation considering Wheeler’s dislike of it, that means someone is going to see their role get changed.
“… if anything, I could see them moving Suárez (or a different starter) to the bullpen. But my guess is not everyone stays healthy,” he wrote when asked if the lefty could be moved at the deadline.
The health aspect is crucial here.
Philadelphia has enjoyed a good string of positive variance when it comes to their pitchers avoiding injuries, and for the cynics out there, they might say it’s only a matter of time until that changes.
If everyone does stay off the injured list, though, it’s interesting to see the prediction that Suarez would be the one who gets his role reduced to reliever, but when diving in, it does make sense.
While he’s become a fan favorite for what he’s done as a starting pitching in the playoffs, he began his career in the bullpen and is still working on building up his arm for the workload that’s necessary to pitch at a high level every fifth day 30 times per year.
Suarez was a full-time starter in 2022, making 29 starts and throwing his career-high in innings with 155.1.
The following season, he began the year on the injured list with an elbow strain, not making his first appearance until May before he found himself on the IL again with a hamstring strain.
That resulted in just 22 starts and 125 innings pitched.
This past campaign, Suarez was in the NL Cy Young mix early on, carrying a sizzling 2.27 ERA through the month of June that earned him his first All-Star nod. But in the eight starts after the Midsummer Classic, his ERA was 5.65, which also saw him miss time on the injured list with a lower back issue.
All of that is to say, using the lefty out of the bullpen for the second half of the year might actually allow him to be more effective for this Phillies team.
And with more gas left in the tank, he could still provide those incredible playoff moments, just this time around, he can go deeper into games and not turn things over to the bullpen unit early in the contest.
According to an insider source, a shocking position change may be on the horizon for a Philadelphia Phillies fan favorite. Rumors are swirling that the beloved player could be moving to a new position that will surprise and intrigue fans.
While details are still scarce, this potential change has sparked excitement and speculation among Phillies supporters. Could this player be transitioning to a new role that will showcase their versatility and talent in a whole new way?
Stay tuned for updates as this story develops and the Philadelphia Phillies make their official announcement regarding this unexpected position change for one of their most beloved players. Fans are sure to be on the edge of their seats as they await confirmation of this exciting news.

Thanks to advances in treatment options, a COVID-19 diagnosis is no longer as scary as it once was, at least for most people. A new study, however, suggests that it may now be easier to predict who is most likely to suffer with more serious disease symptoms based on leukocyte (white blood cell) count. Results of the study are published online today in Menopause, the journal of The Menopause Society.
Millions of people worldwide suffer from the ongoing effects of COVID-19-which is caused by the SARs-CoV-2 virus-even months after the initial diagnosis. Cognitive impairment and fatigue are the most common lingering symptoms, with cognitive impairment affecting 70% of patients. Older adults-especially women-are the most at risk.
Although healthcare professionals know a lot more about COVD-19 than they did at the start of the pandemic in 2020, there are still many lingering questions regarding its effect on the human body. Although it is primarily a respiratory disease, sustained effects on multiple organ systems have been documented. Previous studies have shown an excessive immune response to a COVID-19 infection.
Researchers in this latest study, based on secondary analysis of data from the Women’s Health Initiative, sought to better understand preexisting risk factors that may make certain adults-especially older postmenopausal women-more vulnerable to more serious ongoing symptoms. Specifically, they examined whether leukocyte count (a widely available clinical marker of systemic inflammation) was associated with COVID disease outcomes.
Based on the results, the researchers concluded that leukocyte count is an independent predictor of COVID symptom severity in postmenopausal women. These results extend the evidence that low-grade inflammation is not only an outcome of COVID symptom severity but may also precede the acute COVID-19 infection. Additional research in this area is necessary, but the initial work is promising because leukocyte count represents an easily accessible, inexpensive clinical marker.
Study results are published in the article “Pre-pandemic leukocyte count is associated with severity of post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection among older women in the Women’s Health Initiative.”
As the authors highlight, post-acute sequelae of severe acute respiratory coronavirus 2 infection significantly affects quality of life, often leading to severe disability. This effect is particularly pronounced in women, who already experience higher rates of cognitive impairment after menopause. By understanding underlying factors, we can better address these challenges and work to mitigate the cascade of symptoms that follow.”

Ng, T., et al. (2025). Pre-pandemic leukocyte count is associated with severity of post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection among older women in the Women’s Health Initiative. Menopause. doi.org/10.1097/GME.0000000000002490.
A recent study has found that the level of leukocytes, or white blood cells, in older women may be a key indicator of the severity of COVID-19 symptoms. Researchers analyzed data from over 1,000 older women who tested positive for the virus and found that those with higher levels of leukocytes were more likely to experience severe symptoms and complications.
Leukocytes are an important part of the body’s immune response, helping to fight off infections and diseases. In patients with COVID-19, a higher leukocyte count may indicate a more robust immune response, but it can also lead to an exaggerated inflammatory response that can cause damage to the lungs and other organs.
The findings of this study suggest that monitoring leukocyte levels in older women with COVID-19 could help healthcare providers better predict and manage the severity of their symptoms. By identifying those at higher risk for complications early on, doctors can provide more targeted treatment and support to improve outcomes for these patients.
As the pandemic continues to impact communities around the world, understanding the role of leukocytes in COVID-19 severity could be crucial in guiding treatment strategies and improving patient outcomes. Further research is needed to validate these findings and determine how they may be applied in clinical practice.
