Long before he began experimenting with the mind-expanding potential of psychedelic mushrooms, Timothy Leary was a psychologist. In 1957, he came up with the interpersonal behaviour circumplex, which sought to represent personality using two dimensions: power and love. While relationships on the power axis were oppositional – that is, dominance inspires submission and vice versa – on the love axis they are reflexive: hostility inspires hostility and cooperation inspires cooperation.
This was subsequently developed by Emily and Laurence Alison at the University of Liverpool. In their 2020 book Rapport, they use animals to express the four basic characteristics: a lion for control, a mouse for capitulation, a T-Rex for assertiveness and a monkey for cooperation. None of these are intrinsically good or bad: the lion could be inspiring and supportive, but he could also be patronising or dictatorial. And nor are many people represented by a single animal.
The Alisons drew up two wheels to represent the “good” and “bad” variants, each with eight sections representing personalities as being primarily one with a secondary element of another. Good Monkey with secondary Lion, for instance, is “social, warm, friendly”.
When Ange Postecoglou arrived at Tottenham, he seemed refreshingly normal. He acted confidently and was assertive. He was frank and forthright, all characteristics of Good T-Rex. But the Premier League is a tough zoo. It can break even the most apparently robust of managers. When a BBC reporter began his interview with Postecoglou after the 3-2 defeat to Everton with “A familiar story?”, he responded by snarling: “Great way to start an interview, mate.”
Tottenham have lost five of their past six league games and Postecoglou has previously seemed irritated at having to point out Spurs’ injury problems over and over again. If anything, to suggest the defeat at Everton was a “familiar story” was underplaying it: this was far worse.
The Dr Tottenham phenomenon is well known – Spurs have long been a tonic for sides down on their luck – but even by their standards, this was extraordinary: by half-time, Everton had improved their goals tally for the season by 20%, Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored his first goal in four months and Goodison was rocking like Howard Kendall was back with Paul Bracewell running the midfield.
Few will worry too much about a manager snapping at a journalist but what is more significant is what it reveals about Postecoglou’s mindset – particularly if he is reacting in a similar way to players. Being sarcastic, punitive, attacking and unfriendly, the Alisons tell us, is characteristic of Bad T-Rex with secondary Mouse. In fact, Postecoglou ticks almost all the Bad T-Rex boxes. He’s become irritable, distrustful and resentful which is Bad Mouse with some T-Rex. And he’s always been dogmatic and demanding, represented by Bad Lion with some T-Rex.
What then has changed? Why has the Good T-Rex of 18 months ago gone bad today? “It’s the way of the world,” as Blackadder explains to Baldrick in the BBC series. “The abused always kick downwards. I am annoyed so I kick the cat. The cat pounces on the mouse … and finally the mouse bites you on the behind.” Postecoglou is under pressure, his skin perhaps not as thick as it initially seemed, and this current irascible incarnation is what happens when flaws and foibles are exposed by the Premier League machine.
It’s only fair, of course, to outline once again how the club have let Postecoglou down. The squad is short – inexcusably so given wages to turnover ratio is the lowest in the league at 47%. Fraser Forster is not compatible with Postecoglou’s preferred style; that he was the back up for Guglielmo Vicario is almost negligent and the result is a 21-year-old being signed and thrown immediately into first-team action. To lose all three frontline centre-backs at once was unfortunate but to have only three has left Spurs open to that sort of bad luck. How is the inexperienced right-back Djed Spence the first-choice back-up at left-back?
The limitations of Tottenham’s squad have been exposed by a glut of injury problems. Photograph: Dylan Martinez/Reuters
Add in that Tottenham’s policy is to sign for the future and they ended up at Everton with six teenagers on the bench and another two on the pitch. In that context, a certain inconsistency is only to be expected. The problem is that Spurs now seem to have slipped beyond that; a little inconsistency, in fact, would be welcome in the face of relentless league defeats. They shouldn’t be in a relegation battle but if they lose on Sunday to Leicester, who have lost seven in a row, maybe it’s not impossible they do slide into the mire, particularly given Postecoglou’s alarming slip into Bad T-Rex territory.
This is the greatness of the Premier League, but it is also its horror. It’s like a tale from the One Thousand and One Nights: complete the quest and great glory and the princess’s hand in marriage awaits, but for those who fail the consequences are severe. The Premier League is the richest, toughest league in the world. Every game is a test. Every aspect of a manager is constantly challenged. Stand still and you go backwards.
Postecoglou isn’t alone in giving the impression of being unnerved by the remorseless nature of the Premier League. Ruben Amorim is already making highly provocative comments about just how bad his Manchester United team appears to be.
Whether dogmatism is appropriate in any aspect of management in a league that demands constant evolution can be debated – particularly, perhaps, when the dogma in question feels like a breezy version of the hegemonic style of a decade ago – and there can be little doubt about the limitations of Tottenham’s squad. But the issue Postecoglou faces now seems more fundamental and could conceivably lead to his exit before the end of the season. Beaten down by the Premier League, he is lashing out, hostility generating hostility to create a doom spiral.
Once locked in that loop, it’s very difficult to get out. It’s easy to say a little cooperation, a little flexibility, might break the cycle, far harder to make it happen, particularly for somebody of T-Rex personality type with lion tendencies. More achievable, perhaps, is to find a way back from Bad T-Rex to Good, to replace sarcasm and argumentativeness with confidence and assertiveness. You don’t have to have eaten Leary’s mushrooms to realise grouchy dinosaurs rarely prosper.
Ange Postecoglou, once hailed as the “Good Ange” for his success with the Australian national team and Celtic FC, has now found himself in the midst of a Premier League nightmare. The former Socceroos coach took over as manager of Crystal Palace in the summer, but his reign has quickly turned sour.
Initially, there was optimism surrounding Postecoglou’s appointment, as he brought his attacking style of play and reputation for developing young players to the London club. However, Palace’s form has been abysmal under his leadership, with the team struggling near the bottom of the table and facing a real threat of relegation.
The once-respected manager has been criticized for his tactics, team selections, and inability to adapt to the demands of the Premier League. Fans and pundits alike have questioned whether Postecoglou is out of his depth in one of the most competitive leagues in the world.
It’s a far cry from the success he enjoyed at Celtic, where he won the Scottish Premiership and guided the team to an unbeaten domestic season. Now, Postecoglou finds himself embroiled in a battle to keep Palace in the top flight, with his reputation on the line.
As the pressure mounts and the losses continue to pile up, the “Good Ange” has seemingly transformed into the “Bad Postecoglou.” The once-promising manager is now caught in the Premier League doom spiral, with his future at Palace hanging by a thread. Only time will tell if he can turn things around and salvage his reputation in English football.
The team sheets have been handed in, and here is the news. Ollie Watkins starts again, with Duran on the bench for Villa, with Leon Bailey and Lucas Digne the new faces from the team that drew with Arsenal. West Ham bring in Alphonse Areola in goal, and Vladimir Coufal and Carlos Soler out of goal.
“Of course, West Ham, they are not being consistent, but they have now a new coach. Tactically, they are going to improve,” said Unai Emery on Friday. We’re about to find out how much improvement they’ve managed, but Villa have some improving to do: sure, they’re eighth in the table which is fine “(“The most important for us is the Premier League, and to be in the table’s top eight positions,” Emery added), and have lost only one of their last five league games, but away from home they’re not so hot: two wins and five defeats in their last eight in the league, which would put them 16th in a notional last-eight-away-from-home table (in mitigation, those fixtures included visits to Newcastle, Nottingham Forest, Chelsea and Liverpool). Emery said their ambition was to “try to be consistent like we are at the moment at home”, where they would be sixth and unbeaten in a last-eight-games table.
Graham Potter also thinks West Ham are going to improve. “Our ambition is there – we want to get better. We want to move towards a style of play that our supporters recognise and are fond of,” he said at his press conference on Friday. “It has been nice to have a decent stretch of training. We have managed to do some good work, analyse the last game and prepare for Aston Villa, so I think we have used the time well. In every training session and after every message, I think the intention has been there.”

This will be an ideal test of their improvement since Potter’s arrival, and what he’s managed to achieve with that decent stretch of training: these teams played here in the FA Cup a couple of weeks ago, a day after he was unveiled as Julen Lopategui’s replacement, and Villa won 2-1.
Since then West Ham have beaten Fulham 3-2 (in a game where they had four shots overall and only three on target) and lost 2-0 to Crystal Palace (in a game where they had four shots overall and none at all on target). For context, last season the average Premier League game featured 27.2 shots in total. Since Christmas West Ham have had a total of 11 shots on target across six games, while conceding 15 goals at the other end. It’s obvious where that improvement needs to be demonstrated. So, let’s see how they’ve got on, shall we?

Crystal Palace vs Brentford, Sunday 2pm, live on Sky Sports
Over the last five seasons, Crystal Palace have spent 439 days in either 12th or 13th place in the Premier League.
They are the definition of mid-table obscurity.
However, this team can dream a little higher than that under Oliver Glasner.

Palace have won 20 points since the November international break – only Arsenal, Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth, Liverpool and Chelsea have won more. Their structure without the ball is really impressive and hard to create chances against – and that is being drawn out in their defensive data. Palace are offering up just 1.15 expected goals per game in their last 11 Premier League games – that per-90 record is only bettered by Liverpool and Arsenal.
Sunday 26th January 1:00pm
Kick off 2:00pm
Meanwhile, Brentford have lost 17 of their last 24 Premier League away games, beating only Southampton, Luton, Bournemouth and Wolves on the road.
Palace on offer at 21/20 with Sky Bet for the win is a tasty proposition.

To suffer 12 defeats in 22 Premier League games but still to have beaten Liverpool, Man City, Man Utd and Aston Villa this season is borderline impossible to analyse. They sit 15th in the Premier League but have a +10 goal difference.
West Ham sit above them but have a -16 goal difference – someone make it make sense?
Leicester could be a big price here at 9/2 with Sky Bet but I don’t trust Ruud van Nistelrooy to come up with the right plan to beat Spurs.
The Foxes have conceded two or more goals in their last nine games to an average of 2.44 goals conceded per game as their style of football leaves their centre-backs woefully exposed.
although I don’t trust Spurs, I do have complete trust in Dejan Kulusevski, He’s got seven goals in his last 12 appearances, meaning the 2/1 with Sky Bet of him scoring has a great chance of landing.
SCORE PREDICTION: 3-1
Aston Villa vs West Ham, Sunday 4.30pm, live on Sky Sports
You just know even during this game Unai Emery will be on the touchline thinking how to beat Celtic on Wednesday night.
His mind will wander. European football takes prominence, that’s clear from his career in management.
This could be a half-baked version of Aston Villa and that’s a dangerous game to play against any opposition in the Premier League. We’ve seen iffy results and performances from Villa before a big Champions League night. The 2-2 with Ipswich, the 4-1 defeat at Spurs and they made hard work of beating Southampton 1-0 at home.
Sunday 26th January 4:00pm
Kick off 4:30pm
This makes their win price of 1/2 with Sky Bet look very short indeed, especially looking at the recent meeting between the two at Villa Park in the FA Cup where West Ham were the better side for large periods.
Yes, they have injuries but I’ve got hope that a week on the training pitch under the talented Graham Potter can spark a bit of improvement. If so, the 6/4 on West Ham on the double chance, to avoid defeat, could be a massive price.

Fulham going off clear favourites to beat Manchester United in the Premier League is a little mind blowing to football fans like me who have lived through the dominance of the Sir Alex Ferguson era.
Those days are long gone now and such has been their poor recruitment in recent years, where they’ve blown over £160m on Rasmus Hojlund, Joshua Zirkzee and Antony, the chance of a successful rebuild with the purse strings now tightened looks slim.
Fulham are the more cohesive, better coached, organised and confident team, playing some great stuff this season under the criminally underrated Marco Silva.
It’s why they are as short as 5/4 with Sky Bet for maximum points. A price many will snap up – and I can totally see why.

Tottenham have won five of their last six Premier League home games against Leicester (L1), scoring at least three goals in all five of those victories.
Following a 1-1 draw in August, Leicester are looking to avoid defeat in both Premier League meetings with Spurs in a single campaign for the first time since their title winning season of 2015-16. Back then, the sides drew 1-1 in August, before Leicester won 1-0 away in January.
There have been 130 goals in 35 Premier League meetings between Tottenham and Leicester, the highest goals-per-game ratio of any fixture to have been played at least 30 times (3.71).
Since the start of December, only Southampton (8) have lost more Premier League games than Tottenham Hotspur (7), while the Saints are also the only side to concede more goals (25) than Spurs have (22).
Leicester City have lost their last seven Premier League matches and could equal their league record for consecutive defeats in this match, losing eight games in a row between March and April 2001.
Tottenham have lost their last three Premier League matches, last losing four in a row in April/May 2024. They didn’t lose four in a row at all between 2005 and 2023, with Ange Postecoglou potentially becoming only the second Spurs manager to lose four consecutively twice, alongside David Pleat in 2003-04.
Since Ruud van Nistelrooy took charge of Leicester for the first time on 3 December, only Brentford (176) and Southampton (169) have faced more shots than the Foxes (154). The 17.1 shots they’ve faced per game under the Dutchman is still marginally lower than they did under Steve Cooper this season (17.6).
Leicester’s Ruud van Nistelrooy is only the fourth manager in Premier League history to suffer a run of seven consecutive defeats within his first 10 games at a club, along with Alan Ball at Man City in 1995 (8 in a row), Mick McCarthy at Sunderland in 2003/2005 (10 in a row) and Terry Connor at Wolves in 2012 (7 in a row).
Only Chelsea’s Cole Palmer (62) has created more chances in the Premier League this season than Tottenham’s Dejan Kulusevski (56). The Swede has also scored in four of his last eight games, scoring four goals, although he’s ended on the losing side in three of those games.
Leicester goalkeeper Jakub Stolarczyk is the first goalkeeper in Premier League history to concede multiple goals in each of his first five appearances, shipping 11 goals in total. The last Foxes keeper to concede 2+ goals in six games in a row was Ron-Robert Zieler in the 2016-17 campaign.
Tottenham Hotspur take on Leicester City in a crucial Premier League clash as they look to secure a top-four finish. Here’s a preview of the game, along with team news, stats, and head-to-head record between the two sides.
Team News:
Tottenham Hotspur will be without the services of Harry Kane, who is sidelined with an ankle injury. Son Heung-min is also a doubt for the game after picking up a knock in their last match. However, they will be boosted by the return of Dele Alli, who is back from suspension.
Leicester City will be without James Maddison, who is still recovering from a hip injury. However, they will have Jamie Vardy leading the line as he looks to add to his goal tally and help his team secure a win.
Stats:
– Tottenham Hotspur are currently in 5th place in the Premier League table, just one point behind 4th-placed Chelsea.
– Leicester City are in 3rd place, five points ahead of Tottenham and looking to cement their position in the top four.
– Tottenham have won three of their last five league games, while Leicester have won four of their last five.
Head-to-Head:
In their last five meetings, Tottenham have won three games, with Leicester winning one and one match ending in a draw. However, Leicester won the reverse fixture earlier in the season, beating Tottenham 2-0 at the King Power Stadium.
This promises to be an exciting and closely contested match, with both teams looking to secure a crucial three points. Tottenham will be hoping to close the gap on the top four, while Leicester will be aiming to strengthen their position in the Champions League spots. Don’t miss this thrilling encounter between two top Premier League sides.

Three decades to the day have gone by since Eric Cantona’s infamous kung-fu kick on a Crystal Palace supporter at Selhurst Park – but, it seems, the intervening years have not served to mellow the Frenchman’s outlook on that January night in 1995.
Why did Cantona kick the fan?
Having been sent off for lashing out at Palace defender Richard Shaw as the sides played out a 1-1 Premier League draw, the Manchester United attacker was trudging back to the dressing rooms when home fan Matthew Simmons allegedly shouted at him: “F**k off back to France”.
Cantona responded by launching himself feet first at Simmons in a skirmish that also saw punches thrown. Let’s remind ourselves of that moment.
In the wake of the incident, the United star was fined and eventually banned for nine months, as well as being sentenced to 120 hours’ community service.
But speaking to the magazine FourFourTwo as part of an interview in which he answered readers’ questions, Cantona remained unrepentant. “I didn’t punch him strong enough,” declared the 49-year-old. “I should have punched him harder.”

It has been 30 years since one of the most infamous incidents in Premier League history: the kung-fu fan attack involving Eric Cantona and a Crystal Palace supporter. The incident occurred on January 25, 1995, during a match between Manchester United and Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
In the 48th minute of the match, Cantona was sent off for a foul on Crystal Palace defender Richard Shaw. As he made his way off the pitch, a Palace supporter, Matthew Simmons, shouted abuse at Cantona. In a shocking turn of events, Cantona launched himself over the advertising hoardings and delivered a kung-fu kick to Simmons before punching him multiple times.
The incident sparked outrage and led to Cantona being banned from football for eight months and sentenced to 120 hours of community service. But what was perhaps even more surprising was the reaction from some fans and pundits.
While most condemned Cantona’s actions, there were some who praised him for standing up to the abuse he had received. Some even went as far as to defend his actions, arguing that Simmons had provoked Cantona and deserved what he got.
Looking back on the incident 30 years later, it serves as a reminder of the passion and intensity of football, as well as the sometimes surprising reactions it can elicit. Cantona’s kung-fu fan attack will forever be etched in Premier League history, a moment that continues to divide opinion to this day.
A scoreline that’s probably about right, when taken in the round. But Chelsea had City on the ropes early doors, and let the champions back into the fight. You don’t let champions back into the fight. All of which could make for a very entertaining second half. Go nowhere!
45 min +2: Madueke dribbles in from the right and has a shot from the edge of the D. It’s deflected inches over the bar. There’s no time to take the corner, though. There goes that whistle.
45 min +1: The first of two additional minutes. Nowt to report.
45 min: Palmer, making good down the middle, has Jackson and Madueke either side. He hesitates, allowing Silva to get back and nick the ball off his toe. “Why are Chelsea knocking their goal kicks short to the keeper to immediately hoof down field?” wonders Dan Christmas. “Have goal kicks become so ubiquitously taken short that players have forgotten you can hoof the dead ball?”
43 min: VAR has a quick check, but Madueke was too deep out on the Chelsea right and playing Nunes onside.
GOAL! Manchester City 1-1 Chelsea (Gvardiol 42)
City go down the middle again, and this time hit paydirt! Gundogan pings down the middle for Nunes, who gets the better of Cucurella and shoots upon entering the box. Sanchez saves, but the ball deflects towards Gvardiol, romping in from the left. Gvardiol can’t miss with the goal unguarded. City level!
40 min: City remain patient … then suddenly spring forward. Foden floats a pass down the middle to release Gvardiol, who gets in ahead of the dozing James. Sanchez comes out to close the angle. Gvardiol flicks a leg insouciantly to take an early shot. The ball squirts past Sanchez and inches wide of the bottom-left corner. That would have been some goal.
38 min: City enjoy a period of quiet possession. Calm dominance. Remember when they were always like this? It’s not so long ago, either, which makes it all so odd.
36 min: Marmoush has looked lively, though. So far, his debut has been as promising as Khusanov’s has been unfortunate.
34 min: Gundogan shoots through a crowded Chelsea box towards the bottom right. Sanchez parries, but spills into the road of Marmoush, who slots across the keeper and into the bottom left. But it’s not going to count. Marmoush was offside when the initial shot was struck.
Manchester City’s Omar Marmoush finds the net but doesn’t end up on the scoresheet courtesy of the offside flag. Photograph: Peter Powell/Reuters
33 min: Cucurella has the opportunity to release Sancho down the left. The pass is no good, though, handing Khusanov the opportunity of a confidence-building slide tackle.
32 min: The resulting free kick is worked wide left to Marmoush, who whips a deep cross towards Foden, rushing in from the other side. Foden’s header, from six yards, is high and wide. But he’d have been flagged offside had it gone in.
31 min: Kovacic bustles down the middle and is skittled by Caicedo, who is rather fortunate not to go into the book. Just a stern talking-to from the referee.
29 min: Cucurella slips Jackson clear down the middle. Jackson fluffs his chance, allowing Ederson to smother. He was offside anyway. But City are playing with fire here. Chelsea look dangerous whenever they nick the ball and counter. A coiled spring.
28 min: Palmer advances down the inside-right channel and has a dig from 25 yards. The shot takes a deflection on the way through to Ederson, but the keeper handles well nonetheless.
27 min: … so the main takeaway from the match so far is that City still look sharp in attack. They’re a collective bag of nerves whenever somebody runs at them, though.
26 min: Chalobah is given a preposterous amount of time and space as he traverses down the right. From deep inside his own half, he reaches the edge of the City box before slipping a pass to Madueke on the overlap. Madueke goes nowhere. Chalobah might have done better trying to find Jackson in the middle.
25 min: Colwill is booked for taking his sweet time over the restart.
24 min: Nunes wins a corner down the City right. Foden plays it short and the move breaks down. But City come again through Silva down the same flank. Silva crosses, Haaland eyebrows it on, and Gvardiol brings it down on the left-hand corner of the six-yard box. Gvardiol leans back and blooters over the bar. Big chance missed.
23 min: Marmoush smashes the free kick straight into the wall. He was going for the top-left corner. Not enough height.
22 min: Gvardiol finds Marmoush this time, down the inside-left channel. James comes across and clumsily knocks him to the ground. It’s a free kick just to the left of the Chelsea D. A chance for Marmoush to showcase his set-piece skill.
21 min: Foden turns elegantly in the centre circle and sprays a pass wide left for Gvardiol, who barrels into the Chelsea box and crosses low for Marmoush. The new striker extends a leg but doesn’t connect. He’d have converted had he done so. Mind you, he was also clearly offside, so it’s all moot.

19 min: Chelsea are getting a lot of joy down the left. Sancho and Cucurella combine cutely but the latter’s cross doesn’t get through to Jackson. Meanwhile here’s Hugh Molloy offering City’s debutant defender some much-needed historical succour: “Khusanov, poor lad, three touches, three shockers. What’s the earliest hook in Premier League history I wonder? Saying that, I remember early Nemanja Vidić and thought he looked looked and moved more like a nightclub bouncer than footballer.”
17 min: On the touchline, Pep is chuntering hard at his team, who look seriously shaken by the start to this game. Imagine the inner monologue of his new defender. “Even as an ardent Arsenal fan, my heart was breaking for Khusanov in those first few minutes, and indeed cheered when he blocked that shot,” writes Tanay Padhi. “Lamb to the slaughter, it’s been tough to watch.”
15 min:Chelsea spring on the counter again, Sancho tearing down the left and nearly finding Jackson in the middle, six yards out. Akanji is on point to hook clear, just in time.
13 min: Palmer was uncharacteristically sloppy back there. It was something of a surprise that he didn’t take on the shot himself when clean through; his pass across to Jackson was way too heavy, and all momentum was lost, allowing Khusanov to get back and gain some redemption by blocking Sancho’s shot/
11 min: … and now Foden crashes a shot off the right-hand upright! Both defences are absolutely all over the shop. This is like watching Spurs play Spurs.
Phil Foden lets fly. Photograph: Tim Keeton/EPA
9 min: It really should be 0-2 now. Marmoush is dispossessed by Chalobah in the centre circle. Chalobah immediately slips Palmer clear, Khusanov too deep and playing him onside. Palmer could shoot but rolls across to Jackson. The pass too heavy. Jackson, forced wide, cuts back for Sancho, whose shot is blocked … by Khusanov. It’s been up and down so far for the young man all right!
7 min: Well, that could have been worse, I guess. Had Khusanov not fouled Palmer, the former City starlet would have most likely gone through on goal. A fair chance then Chelsea would have gone two up in short order. “Horrible error that and it was noticeable that with the exception of Ederson, no City player went over to Khusanov to offer any support,” observes Stephen Carr.
5 min: Nothing comes of the resulting free kick. Poor Khusanov’s head must be swimming. Not exactly the ideal start to life at your new club. He’s just 20 years old.
4 min: … and now Khusanov goes into the book for a cynical clank into Palmer, who was running into space down the middle. Palmer was only doing so because Khusanov had rolled a hospital pass to Kovacic. He was lucky there were covering defenders, because VAR double-checked for a red-card offence as last man.

GOAL! Manchester City 0-1 Chelsea (Madueke 3)
… and what a terrible start this is for Khusanov, whose second touch in his new shirt is a nightmare. He misses a simple clearing header, then turns and fluffs an attempt to head back to Ederson. Jackson nips in and rolls across to Madueke, who has an open goal to roll into.

1 min: … and then Marmoush, who is sent clear down the middle by Foden and lashes inches over the bar. Turns out he’s offside, but not by much. What a start that would have been!
Chelsea get the ball rolling. Then an early touch for the new boy Khusanov.
Before kick-off, a moment to remember three former Manchester City players who have recently passed on: Tony Book, Denis Law and Bobby Kennedy. The warmest of applause and an a cappella version of Blue Moon.

The teams are out!Manchester City in sky blue, Chelsea in their first-choice royal. A cracking atmosphere at the Etihad. A big hug between the two managers, who know each other so well. We’ll be off in a couple of minutes.
Enzo Maresca, erstwhile assistant to Pep, speaks to Sky. “I’m not sure Manchester City are low on confidence … they are always difficult to play … the moment everyone thinks they can drop a little bit or are low energy is the moment when they want to show everyone is wrong … it will be a tough game for sure.”
Pep Guardiola talks to Sky Sports. “I hope to see the best of [new signings Omar Marmoush and Abdukodir Khusanov] … they bring energy … they come fit … I decided to let them play … we have an important game today … we have next Wednesday … next Sunday … one game at a time … see what happens today … we hope to perform well.”
The 3pm kick-offs have finished. Rob Smyth has all the details in Clockwatch, but the most relevant results as far as Manchester City and Chelsea are concerned are Newcastle’s 3-1 victory at Southampton and Bournemouth’s 5-0 shellacking of the previously hard-to-beat Nottingham Forest. All of which has nudged Chelsea down to fifth and City seventh, though the champions can spring back to fourth with a win tonight. Chelsea can make it to fourth this evening as well, but they just require a draw to do so.
Pre-match reading.
Manchester City hand debuts to striker Omar Marmoush and defender Abdukodir Khusanov. They’re two of three changes to the starting XI after the 4-2 capitulation at Paris Saint-Germain, the other player coming in being İlkay Gündoğan. Out-of-sorts captain Kevin De Bruyne and Savinho drop to the bench, while Rúben Dias misses out altogether. City’s third new signing Vitor Reis is on the bench.

Chelsea also make three changes, after their 3-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers. Levi Colwill, Enzo Fernández and Jadon Sancho stepping up; Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Pedro Neto and Tosin Adarabioyo dropping to the bench.
Rather unexpectedly, this match is probably not going to have a huge bearing on the title race … though you never know. What we do know for sure is that it’s a repeat of the classic 1986 Full Members’ Cup final. So nostalgia fans should get stuck into this ☟☟☟☟☟☟. Kick-off this evening is at 5.30pm. It’s on!

Even if it seems inevitable Arsenal will dispute PGMOL’s definition of “serious foul play” in the coming days, after the referee Michael Oliver’s remarkable call to punish Myles Lewis-Skelly for a cynical trip with a red card, Mikel Arteta will take great satisfaction from this victory at Wolves. The defender’s first-half sending-off will dominate the discourse but the substitute Riccardo Calafiori’s priceless winner, after Wolves were themselves reduced to 10 men when João Gomes was given a second yellow card, ensured they stay in the hunt for the title.
The problems are piling up for Wolves, who succumbed to a fourth straight defeat in which their only bona fide striker, Jørgen Strand Larsen, limp down the tunnel. Arteta knows that feeling. The Arsenal manager has not hidden his desire to strengthen his attack but Calafiori took his goal like a seasoned striker. Nelson Semedo’s headed clearance from Gabriel Martinelli’s cross dropped for the Italy defender and, on the swivel, he sent a first-time left-foot finish into the far corner. Pablo Sarabia, substituted minutes earlier, appeared punch-drunk on the Wolves bench. The home support again voiced their anger at the Wolves chairman, Jeff Shi. “Back the team or sell the club,” was the demand from the South Bank.
As this game drifted towards half-time, then came the decision that stunned Molineux. In the immediate phase after Wolves cleared a poor Declan Rice corner, just outside the D on the edge of the Wolves 18-yard box, Doherty seized a loose ball and set about storming upfield on the counterattack. Lewis-Skelly made a snap decision to trip Doherty, catching the defender around his ankle. It was a touch crude but it was not high, forceful or malicious. It was a tactical foul if ever there was one, though the chances of Wolves waltzing forward from there and scoring were surely slim. Oliver appeared to have a prime view of the incident but almost immediately he informed the officials he planned to pull out the red card. Then he flashed it at Lewis-Skelly.

Arteta was utterly bemused, switching his ire between assistant referee and fourth official, his players incredulous. Gabriel, Arsenal’s captain in the absence of the unwell Martin Ødegaard, quizzed Oliver, by now surrounded by raging red shirts. Arteta managed to keep his counsel, pointing to his head and instructing his players to change shape. Lewis-Skelly had been one of five players promoted to the starting lineup, another youngster, Ethan Nwaneri, also returning in midfield. At the interval, three security guards rushed to flank Oliver, who also had Gabriel for company as he headed down the tunnel. For Arsenal, another shuffle was required, with defender Calafiori replacing Nwaneri, who had shown a couple glimpses of his talent.
Nwaneri had been involved in Arsenal’s two big first-half chances, both of which culminated in Kai Havertz dragging his fingers down his face in frustration. For the first he shunted the ball on to Martinelli centrally and he bypassed Lewis-Skelly to locate Leandro Trossard. The Belgian forward cut inside and dinked a right-foot cross towards the back post, where Havertz got above Santiago Bueno and dropped a header narrowly wide of a post. Five minutes later Nwaneri again got things moving. Rice then fed Trossard, whose superb cross invited Havertz to send a stooping header at goal. José Sá, the Wolves goalkeeper, made an instinctive save with his right leg.
Rice stung the palms of Sá early in the second period after Thomas Partey and Martinelli combined and Havertz saw another chance come and go, heading narrowly over from a Rice free-kick. Up the other end David Raya clawed a deflected Matheus Cunha shot, which took a nick off Saliba, out for a corner. From Sarabia’s subsequent corner, Cunha side-footed wide and theatrically crashed to the turf in frustration. Emmanuel Agbadou executed an expert slide tackle on Martinelli, reminiscent of André’s all-encompassing but clean first-half challenge on Nwaneri in front of Arteta on the touchline.
But just as it felt Wolves were dialling up the pressure, Gomes hit self-destruct. Booked in the first half for booting the ball away after the referee blew for a foul by Cunha, the Wolves midfielder picked up a second yellow card on 70 minutes. Gomes was late on Jurriën Timber and inadvertently clamped the ankle of the Arsenal full-back. Gomes looked to the skies and then crouched to the floor as Oliver confirmed the news. It gave Arsenal the leg-up they required.
In a thrilling match between Arsenal and Wolves, it was Calafiori who ultimately emerged as the hero, scoring the winning goal to secure a crucial victory for the Gunners. However, the match was not without controversy, as Wolves were reduced to 10 men after Lewis-Skelly was shown a controversial red card.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Wolves put up a valiant fight, with both teams creating numerous chances throughout the game. The match remained finely poised until Calafiori’s late strike, which proved to be the decisive moment.
The victory was a much-needed boost for Arsenal, who have been struggling for consistency in the Premier League this season. The win sees them climb up the table and offers hope for a strong finish to the campaign.
However, the controversial red card for Lewis-Skelly will undoubtedly be a talking point in the aftermath of the match. The decision divided opinions amongst fans and pundits alike, with many questioning the referee’s judgement.
Overall, it was a tense and exciting encounter between two top teams, with Calafiori’s goal ultimately proving to be the difference. Arsenal will be hoping to build on this result and push on in their quest for a top-four finish in the Premier League.
