Southampton vs Newcastle United: Premier League preview, team news, stats & head-to-head
Southampton have won just one of their last 13 Premier League games against Newcastle (D3 L9), losing each of the last four in a row.
Having won just one of their first 18 Premier League away games against Southampton (D5 L12), Newcastle have now won three of their last four visits to St Mary’s (L1).
Newcastle have lost just one of their last 23 Premier League games against promoted sides (W14 D8), going down 1-0 at Luton in December 2023. Since that defeat at Kenilworth Road, the Magpies have scored at least four goals in five of their six games against promoted clubs, winning the last five in a row.
Southampton have won just one of their last 35 Premier League games (D7 L27). When converting to three points for a win all time, Saints’ six points is the joint-second lowest after 22 top-flight games (level with Sheffield United in 1975-76), with only Bolton in 1902-03 ever having fewer at this stage (3).
Newcastle have won each of their last three Premier League away games, last winning four in a row on the road in September/October 1996.
Southampton players have made 17 errors leading to a goal in the Premier League this season – only Tottenham Hotspur (21 in 2013-14) have made more in a single campaign on record (since 2007-08).
Southampton have lost each of their last five Premier League home games, failing to score in any of the last three. In their league history, they’ve never lost six in a row at home, nor have they ever lost four in a row without scoring.
Including own goals, each of Southampton’s last eight Premier League goals have been netted by different players. No Southampton player has scored more than twice this term, with this the latest into a season (22 games) a side hasn’t had a single player score at least three goals.
Bruno Guimarães has won 76 fouls in the Premier League this season, the most of any player. His rate of 3.6 fouls won per 90 is the most by a Newcastle player in a single campaign since Jonás Gutiérrez in 2008-09 (3.8 – minimum 500 minutes).
Alexander Isak has scored in each of his last four Premier League away games, with no Newcastle player ever doing so in five in a row. Furthermore, he’s scored 13 goals in just 12 Premier League appearances against promoted sides, netting a hat-trick against Ipswich Town last time out.
Southampton will be looking to bounce back from their disappointing defeat to Manchester United when they face off against Newcastle United in the Premier League on Friday night. The Saints suffered a 9-0 thrashing at the hands of the Red Devils in their last outing and will be desperate to put that result behind them with a strong performance against the Magpies.
Newcastle, on the other hand, are coming off a 3-2 win over Leeds United and will be full of confidence heading into this clash.
Team news:
Southampton will be without the services of midfielder Oriol Romeu, who is sidelined with a fractured ankle. However, manager Ralph Hasenhuttl will have the likes of Danny Ings and Che Adams available for selection.
Newcastle will be without the injured Callum Wilson and Fabian Schar, while Allan Saint-Maximin is a doubt for the game.
Stats:
– Southampton have won just one of their last five Premier League games.
– Newcastle have won three of their last five league matches.
– The last meeting between these two sides ended in a 2-0 win for Southampton.Head-to-head:
In their last 10 meetings, Southampton have won four games, Newcastle have won three, and three matches have ended in draws.
Both teams will be looking to secure all three points in this crucial fixture, as they aim to climb up the Premier League table. It promises to be an exciting clash between two evenly matched sides.

Arsenal will look to put pressure on league leaders Liverpool today as they travel to the West Midlands to face relegation candidates Wolves.
Mikel Arteta’s Gunners come into this game on a high after registering a solid 3-0 Champions League win over Dinamo Zagreb in midweek, but look likely to be without key defender William Saliba for this game thanks to a hamstring problem.
Wolves meanwhile will be looking to put last weekend’s demoralising 3-0 defeat to Chelsea behind them, with that result meaning Vitor Pereira remain just outside of the relegation zone thanks to goal difference.
Wolverhampton Wanderers vs. Arsenal on Saturday, Jan. 25, at Molineux, with kickoff set for 3 p.m. GMT local time. That makes it a 10 a.m. ET or 7 a.m. PT start in the US and Canada, and an 2 a.m. AEDT kickoff in Australia in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Below, we’ll outline the best live TV streaming services to use to watch the match as it happens, wherever you are in the world.
Vitor Pereira’s Wolves have suffered three straight losses, crashing to defeats to Nottingham Forest, Newcastle United and Chelsea.
How to watch Wolves vs. Arsenal in the US without cable
Saturday’s Liverpool vs Ipswich match is streaming on Peacock. You’ll need a Peacock Premium or Premium Plus account to catch the game live.
Peacock offers two Premium plans, and after the recent price increases, the ad-supported Premium plan costs $8 a month and the ad-free Premium Plus plan is $14 a month.
How to watch the Premier League 2024-25 season from anywhere with a VPN
If you find yourself unable to view EPL matches locally, you may need a different way to watch the games — that’s where using a VPN can come in handy. A VPN is also the best way to stop your ISP from throttling your speeds on game day by encrypting your traffic, and it’s also a great idea if you’re traveling and find yourself connected to a Wi-Fi network, and you want to add an extra layer of privacy for your devices and logins.
With a VPN, you’re able to virtually change your location on your phone, tablet or laptop to get access to the game. Most VPNs, like our Editors’ Choice, ExpressVPN, make it really easy to do this.
Using a VPN to watch or stream sports is legal in any country where VPNs are legal, including the US, UK and Canada, as long as you have a legitimate subscription to the service you’re streaming. You should be sure your VPN is set up correctly to prevent leaks: Even where VPNs are legal, the streaming service may terminate the account of anyone it deems to be circumventing correctly applied blackout restrictions.
Latest Tests DNS leaks detected, 25% speed loss in 2024 testsNetwork 3,000 plus servers in 105 countriesJurisdiction British Virgin Islands
ExpressVPN is our current best VPN pick for people who want a reliable and safe VPN, and it works on a variety of devices. It’s normally $13 a month, but if you sign up for an annual subscription for $100 you’ll get three months free and save 49%. That’s the equivalent of $6.67 a month.
Note that ExpressVPN offers a 30-day money-back guarantee.
Can I livestream Wolves vs. Arsenal in the UK?
No broadcaster has the rights to show this game live in the UK, due to the traditional Saturday 3 p.m. kickoff blackout, which prohibits matches from being shown in the region at that time to protect attendances throughout the English football pyramid.
That also means that if you’re in the UK traveling for pleasure or for work, you’re unlikely to be able to watch the game like you normally would at home, thanks to geoblocking.
There’s one option to get around this. By using a VPN, as explained above, you can set your location to a country where the match is being broadcast and go from there.
Livestream Wolves vs. Arsenal in Canada
If you want to stream this EPL game live in Canada, you’ll need to subscribe to Fubo Canada. The service has exclusive rights to every Premier League fixture once again this season.
Fubo is the go-to destination for Canadians looking to watch the EPL this season, with exclusive streaming rights to every match. It costs CA$30 a month, though you can save some cash by paying quarterly or annually.
Livestream Wolves vs. Arsenal in Australia
Football fans Down Under can watch EPL matches live on streaming service Optus Sport, which is showing every single Premier League fixture of the 2024-25 season live in Australia.
With exclusive rights to stream all EPL matches live this season, as well as German Bundesliga and Spanish La Liga games, streaming service Optus Sport is a particularly big draw for Aussie soccer fans.
If you’re already an Optus network customer, you can bag Optus Sport for a reduced price, with discounts bringing the price down to as low as AU$7 a month. If you’re not, a standalone monthly subscription to the service starts at AU$25.
Quick tips for streaming the Premier League using a VPN
- With four variables at play — your ISP, browser, video streaming provider and VPN — your experience and success when streaming EPL matches may vary.
- If you don’t see your desired location as a default option for ExpressVPN, try using the “search for city or country” option.
- If you’re having trouble getting the game after you’ve turned on your VPN and set it to the correct viewing area, there are two things you can try for a quick fix. First, log into your streaming service subscription account and make sure the address registered for the account is an address in the correct viewing area. If not, you may need to change the physical address on file with your account. Second, some smart TVs — like Roku — don’t have VPN apps you can install directly on the device itself. Instead, you’ll have to install the VPN on your router or the mobile hotspot you’re using (like your phone) so that any device on its Wi-Fi network now appears in the correct viewing location.
- All of the VPN providers we recommend have helpful instructions on their main site for quickly installing the VPN on your router. In some cases with smart TV services, after you install a cable network’s sports app, you’ll be asked to verify a numeric code or click a link sent to your email address on file for your smart TV. This is where having a VPN on your router will also help, since both devices will appear to be in the correct location.
- And remember, browsers can often give away a location despite using a VPN, so be sure you’re using a privacy-first browser to log into your services. We normally recommend Brave.

Premier League Predictions, odds and best bets: Chelsea to beat Manchester City, no issues for Liverpool | Football News
Our betting expert Jones Knows provides his insight as Chelsea’s youthfulness can see them to victory over a legless Manchester City.
Bournemouth vs Nottingham Forest, Saturday 3pm
Along with playing with intensity, Bournemouth are the masters of stifling counter-attacks or dangerous situations with fouls.
No team since the start of 2024 averages a higher amount of fouls than the Cherries with a whopping 13.76 being made per game. This type of football inevitably leads to cards and only Chelsea are averaging more yellow cards per game than Bournemouth in the last year. Andoni Iraola’s team are getting 2.46 yellow card flashed their way per game.
This exciting fixture looks ripe for cards.
And, Tyler Adams looks a big price to be carded at 4/1 with Sky Bet considering his direct opponent will be Morgan Gibbs-White, who has been responsible for an opposition player being carded 18 times since the start of last season.
SCORE PREDICTION: 1-1 | JONES KNOWS’ BEST BET: Tyler Adams to be carded (4/1 with Sky Bet)
Brighton vs Everton, Saturday 3pm
There is a simple equation when it comes to predicting Brighton matches: when Danny Welbeck starts, back them.
The 34-year-old striker, despite his advancing years, is such a key figure for the way Brighton want to play. He occupies defenders, he holds the ball brilliantly to bring other people in and he still carries a goal threat. Welbeck’s influence can be seen through the with and without stats this season.
He’s missed eight Premier League games and Brighton are winless in seven of them, scoring just 10 goals. However, when he starts, the Seagulls are flying, winning eight of their 16 matches and scoring 1.8 goals per game. Brighton to win and under 4.5 goals at Evens with Sky Bet looks a runner.
SCORE PREDICTION: 2-1
Liverpool vs Ipswich, Saturday 3pm – PLAY SUPER 6 HERE!
Anyone who can make a case for Ipswich here at 20/1 with Sky Bet, I salute you.
I’m always trying to spy an angle or two to get the big underdog onside but such is the relentless nature of Liverpool and the state of Ipswich’s defending against Man City it was an impossible task.
The approach from Kieran McKenna will surely be the same as their 1-0 defeat to Arsenal where they retreated into a low block and soaked up pressure. They’ve surprisingly done that in most of their away games this season. This does potentially open the Liverpool corner line up as a betting avenue in what is a very difficult game to find any value in.
Ipswich have conceded an average of 8.8 corners on the road this season against top-half teams whilst Liverpool have got into double figures for corners won against Southampton, Leicester, Wolves, Brentford and in the away fixture with Ipswich. Them to win nine or more at 11/10 with Sky Bet could be the answer.
SCORE PREDICTION: 2-0
Southampton vs Newcastle, Saturday 3pm – PLAY SUPER 6 HERE!
Getting thumped by Bournemouth might not actually be a bad thing for Newcastle. It may just give them a little bit of a backside kick heading into what is an open goal in terms of a winnable football match. Those taking pro Newcastle plays should find some easy winners.
My plan of attack is to concentrate on Southampton’s fouls. Since Ivan Juric took charge, Saints are making 14.4 fouls per game – only Bournemouth are making more (15.6). Juric has made this team more aggressive and that in turn is leading to a higher foul count. My player of choice in the fouls market is Jan Bednarek to make two or more fouls at 5/4 with Sky Bet.
He’s made 14 fouls in his last seven games, so an average of two per game and will be a busy boy up against the Newcastle frontline.
SCORE PREDICTION: 1-3
We’re starting to see why Vítor Pereira doesn’t stick around too long at football clubs. He’s a very engaging character but a very outspoken one and the decision to criticise Matheus Cunha is a risky strategy.
He said of his performance at Chelsea: “I don’t like this body language. I want someone as a captain trying to help the team – running, suffering, fighting together.”
Wolves need Cunha more than they need Periera if they want to stay up so to alienate someone of such importance could prove to be a catastrophic call.
Things could unravel very quickly again at Wolves, especially if Cunha isn’t available this weekend. In 18 games against top-half ranked teams they have conceded two or more goals in 17 of those 18 games, conceding 47 goals in total. That’s 2.6 goals per game. All this makes Arsenal to win by two or more goals very appealing at 5/4 with Sky Bet.
SCORE PREDICTION: 0-3 | JONES KNOWS’ BEST BET: Arsenal -1 handicap (5/4 with Sky Bet)
Man City vs Chelsea, Saturday 5.30pm, live on Sky Sports – PLAY SUPER 6 HERE!
Pep Guardiola remains a smart man, yes? Well, it’s worth listening to him then. In the wake of the latest City collapse in Paris, Guardiola said City are in survival mode and are struggling to beat the best teams. Chelsea do fall into that category, so investing in the away team here makes sense.
We saw against PSG just how much City struggled when tasked with an energetic and fearless side, full of youth, that move the ball dangerously and that’s what Chelsea are. Enzo Maresca’s team are the only Premier League team yet to use a player aged 28 or over this season whilst Man City have given 9,436 minutes to players 28 or older.
With City scoring 24 goals in their last six games and Chelsea enduring problems at the heart of their defence, the smartest way to play this game is to just back the total Chelsea goals line. In their 18 games against Premier League or Champions League opposition City have conceded two or more goals in 13 of those matches to an average of 1.84 goals conceded. Chelsea to score two or more goals at Evens with Sky Bet is a cracker.
SCORE PREDICTION: 2-3 | JONES KNOWS’ BEST BET: Chelsea to score 2+ goals (Evens with Sky Bet)

Liverpool have won their last three league games against Ipswich by an aggregate score of 13-0 – they last won four in a row against the Tractor Boys between 1963 and 1969.
Ipswich have won two of their last three away league games against Liverpool, having failed to win any of their first 27 visits to Anfield beforehand (D8 L19). Their last visit ended in a 5-0 defeat on the final day of the 2001-02 season, however.
Liverpool have won their last 10 Premier League home games against promoted sides by an aggregate score of 34-7 since a 1-0 loss to Fulham in March 2021.
Liverpool remain unbeaten in their last 17 Premier League games (W12 D5), with their only defeat this season coming back in September (0-1 v Nottingham Forest). In Arne Slot’s case, it’s the longest unbeaten run any Liverpool manager has had in their first Football League season with the club since William Edward Barclay, who avoided defeat in all 28 games in the Reds’ first ever such campaign in 1893-94 (second tier).
Liverpool have a higher xG total than any other side in the Premier League this season (50.2), while only Southampton (52.6) have a higher xG against than Ipswich (45.8).
Only Crystal Palace (59%) have earned a higher proportion of their Premier League points this season in away games than Ipswich Town (56% – 9/16), who have earned two of their three league wins this term on the road (vs Tottenham in November & Wolves in December).
Liverpool have conceded the first goal in each of their last three Premier League home games, last having a longer such run between January and April 2021 (7).
Five of Cody Gakpo’s six Premier League goals for Liverpool have come in home games, with the forward netting in each of his last four such appearances at Anfield. Only two Dutchmen have scored in five in a row at home in the Premier League – Ruud van Nistelrooy (August 2003) and Robin van Persie twice (March 2012 and January 2013).
Only Dominic Solanke (853) has applied more pressures than Ipswich’s Omari Hutchinson in the Premier League this season (716). Meanwhile, only Solanke again (399) and Erling Haaland (297) have applied more pressures in the final third (399) than Ipswich forward Liam Delap (295).
Ipswich’s Leif Davis is the only player to have created 20+ chances from both open play (21) and set play (20) in the Premier League this season. Meanwhile, among defenders, only Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold (42) has created more chances overall in the competition this term than Davis (41).
Liverpool will face off against Ipswich Town in a highly anticipated Premier League match this weekend. Both teams will be looking to secure three points and continue their push up the table.Team news:
Liverpool will be without key players Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez, who are both sidelined with long-term injuries. Thiago Alcantara is also a doubt for the match with a muscle injury. However, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane are expected to lead the attack for the Reds.
Ipswich Town will have a full squad to choose from, with manager Paul Cook likely to field his strongest lineup for this crucial fixture. The likes of James Norwood and Kayden Jackson will be key players to watch for Ipswich.
Stats:
Liverpool have won four out of their last five matches in all competitions, showing strong form despite their injury woes. They currently sit in 4th place in the Premier League table.
Ipswich Town, on the other hand, have struggled in recent matches, winning just two out of their last five games. They are currently in 17th place in the Championship table.
Head-to-head:
Liverpool and Ipswich Town have faced each other 31 times in competitive matches, with Liverpool winning 17 of those encounters. Ipswich have won 8 matches, with 6 draws between the two teams.
Liverpool will be looking to continue their dominance over Ipswich Town in this weekend’s match, but Ipswich will be determined to cause an upset and secure a valuable three points.
Overall, this promises to be an exciting and closely contested match between two talented teams. Make sure to tune in and catch all the action as Liverpool take on Ipswich Town in the Premier League.

Just two rounds of the 2024/25 UEFA Champions League league phase remain, with qualification for this season’s knockout stages and more at stake.
Manchester City’s qualification hopes are in the balance as they sit one point above the elimination zone ahead of a trip to Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday, January 22.
Liverpool, Arsenal and Aston Villa are all currently in the top eight places, which secure passage to the last 16.
Also on the radar over the next fortnight are coefficient rankings.
That’s because the two leagues with the best average coefficient scores at the end of the season will secure an extra place in the 2025/26 Champions League.
If the Premier League wins that place, it would go to the team that finishes fifth in the league.
How is the Premier League looking right now in the coefficient standings? And how could a shock elimination for Manchester City impact that?
We delve into the details ahead of the penultimate league phase matchday, live on TNT Sports and discovery+.What are UEFA’s coefficient rankings?
The UEFA coefficient rankings are determined by points gained by European clubs across the current season’s UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League and UEFA Europa Conference League competitions.Per UEFA’s official explanation: “The association club coefficient or country rankings take into account the results of all clubs from each association and are used to determine the number of entries an association is granted for forthcoming seasons.“The club coefficient rankings take into account the results of each club in UEFA club competition and are used to determine a club’s seeding in club competition draws.”
Teams get coefficient points for winning games and reaching different stages of the competitions.
For example, a match win in any of the three European competitions at any stage after qualifying is worth two points and a draw is worth one point.
There are bonus points depending on where a team finishes in the league phase, with more points on offer in the Champions League versus the Europa League and Conference League (12 bonus points for the Champions League league phase winner, six for the Europa League league phase winner, four for the Conference League league phase winner).
There are also points awarded for reaching each of the knockout rounds, which are again weighted by competition, with the Champions League again the most valuable.
The total amount of coefficient points gained by clubs from a league are then added together and that score is divided by the number of clubs that league has in Europe in the season.
What are the current coefficient rankings?
With two rounds to play in the Champions League and Europa League league phases, the picture is currently rosy for English clubs in the coefficient rankings.
The coefficient ranking, worked out by dividing the points accrued by the number of teams, sees England in top spot ahead of Portugal.
England have all seven clubs still in Europe and the coefficient has been boosted by Liverpool’s perfect record in the Champions League and Chelsea winning all six of their games to top the Conference League league phase.

Manchester United are assured of at least the Europa League play-offs and Tottenham look poised to advance too.
The only Premier League team in danger of not qualifying from the league phase are Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola’s side have won just two of their six league phase games and are one point above the elimination zone. They finish the league phase with games against PSG and then Club Brugge.
City’s exit would be a dent for the Premier League’s chances of an extra Champions League place. However, the Premier League would still have plenty of strong representation in the chase for coefficient points.
Who could benefit from A FIFTH Champions League place?
Ironically, it could be Manchester City who take advantage if the Premier League is awarded a fifth Champions League spot next season.
Newcastle are currently fifth in the Premier League table with Chelsea and Bournemouth only a point behind them.
If Chelsea win the Conference League, they do not qualify automatically for the Champions League, instead they qualify for the Europa League league phase.
A fifth Champions League spot for the Premier League would mean the positions that qualify for the Europa League and Conference League will also move down the table by one place.
What if a Premier League team wins a European competition?
If a Premier League team wins this season’s Champions League or Europa League they will automatically qualify for the league phase of the 2025/26 Champions League regardless of their league finishing position.
If the Premier League club that wins the Champions League or Europa League also finishes in the top four then their qualification spot will not drop to another team in the Premier League.
overall coefficient for a country (or club), it is performances over the last five seasons that are taken into account.
What are the club and country coefficients?
As well as the season coefficient rankings, there are country and club rankings.
These rankings are taken from the previous five seasons and are used to determine seedings and how many places each nation gets in European competitions.
Manchester City are currently top of the club rankings but will drop 35 points from their total at the end of the season from their 2020/21 run to the Champions League final.
England will also be dropping a large amount of points (24.357) from the 2020/21 season.

Fifth Champions League place: Will Premier League get extra spot? How are coefficient rankings looking? With the Premier League currently sitting in second place in the UEFA coefficient rankings, there is a strong possibility that the English top-flight could secure a fifth Champions League spot for the 2022/23 season. This would mean that the top five teams in the Premier League would qualify for Europe’s premier club competition, providing an extra opportunity for English clubs to showcase their talent on the biggest stage.
The coefficient rankings are determined by a combination of factors, including the performance of teams from a specific country in European competitions over the past five seasons. The better a country’s teams perform in European competitions, the higher their coefficient ranking will be.
Currently, the Premier League has a coefficient ranking of 98.140, just behind La Liga (101.283) and ahead of Serie A (75.605) and the Bundesliga (70.498). If the Premier League can maintain its strong performances in European competitions, it is likely that they will secure a fifth Champions League spot in the near future.
This would be a significant boost for English clubs, as it would provide more opportunities for them to compete against the best teams in Europe and potentially increase their chances of success in the Champions League. It would also enhance the reputation of the Premier League as one of the strongest and most competitive leagues in the world.
Overall, the Premier League’s strong coefficient ranking and consistent performances in European competitions are promising signs that they could secure a fifth Champions League spot in the coming seasons. Fans of English clubs will be eagerly awaiting the outcome of the coefficient rankings and hoping for an extra opportunity to see their teams compete in the Champions League.

Premier League Soccer: Livestream Chelsea vs. Wolves From Anywhere
Chelsea will look to arrest a recent poor run of form on Monday as they host a Wolves side looking to pull clear of the drop zone.
The home side looked on course for their first Premier League win since mid-December after taking an early lead against Bournemouth last Tuesday, but had to settle for a 2-2 draw, meaning Enzo Maresca’s side have only registered three points from their last five matches.
They come up against a Wolves side that may have seen their “new manager bounce” run out, with Vitor Pereira’s side having suffered back-to-back 3-0 defeats to Nottingham Forest and Newcastle, leaving them level on points with 18th-placed Ipswich.
Chelsea take on Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday, Jan. 20, at Stamford Bridge, with kickoff set for 8 p.m. GMT local time. That makes it a 3 p.m. ET or 12 p.m. PT start in the US and Canada, and a 7 a.m. AEDT kickoff in Australia in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Below, we’ll outline the best live TV streaming services to use to watch the match as it happens, wherever you are in the world.
Recent results have seen Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea slip out of the title race.
How to watch Chelsea vs. Wolves in the US without cable
Monday’s Chelsea vs. Wolves match will be broadcast on USA Network, which you can access as part of your cable package or at the NBC Sports website with a valid login. It can also be streamed via Sling TV and other, more expensive streaming TV services.

Livestream Chelsea vs. Wolves in the UK
Monday’s evening kick-off at Stamford Bridge is exclusive to Sky Sports, showing on its Sky Sports Main Event, Premier League and UHD channels. Sky subsidiary Now offers streaming access to Sky Sports channels with a Now Sports membership. You can get a day of access for £15, or sign up to a monthly plan from £35 per month right now.

Livestream Chelsea vs. Wolves in Australia

With exclusive rights to stream all EPL matches live this season, as well as German Bundesliga and Spanish La Liga games, streaming service Optus Sport is a particularly big draw for Aussie soccer fans.
