Nittany Lions go through final Fiesta Bowl prep with newcomers in attendance

TEMPE, Ariz. — Penn State offered one final look ahead of its matchup with Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl on Sunday afternoon with a practice viewing window on the grounds of Tempe Diablo Stadium. It was a light practice under cloudless skies for the Nittany Lions, who were working at the spring training home of the Los Angeles Angels.

The No. 6-seed Nittany Lions and the No. 3-seed Broncos are scheduled to meet in the Fiesta Bowl at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz., on Tuesday (7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN). The latest betting lines have Penn State (12-2) as a heavy favorite over Boise State (12-1) for the College Football Playoff quarterfinal.

Earlier Sunday, Penn State coach James Franklin and the majority of the roster was made available to the media as part of Fiesta Bowl Media Day, including freshmen who had yet to speak publicly since enrolling earlier this year. You can read those updates here.

As the Nittany Lions gear up for their highly anticipated Fiesta Bowl matchup against the Oregon Ducks, they are going through their final preparations with some new faces in attendance.

With the early signing period for high school recruits just wrapping up, several of Penn State’s newest additions to the team have joined the squad in Arizona to get a taste of what it’s like to be a part of a major bowl game.

Head coach James Franklin has made it a priority to integrate these newcomers into the team culture and give them a taste of what it’s like to compete at the highest level. They have been participating in practices, meetings, and team activities, getting a firsthand look at the intensity and focus required to succeed in a bowl game.

The veterans on the team have welcomed the newcomers with open arms, helping them adjust to the pace and expectations of college football. This experience will be invaluable for the young players as they look ahead to their own careers at Penn State.

As the Nittany Lions continue to fine-tune their game plan and prepare for their showdown with Oregon, having these newcomers in attendance will only add to the excitement and energy surrounding the team. With a mix of seasoned veterans and eager newcomers, Penn State is poised to put on a show in the Fiesta Bowl and make a statement on the national stage.

  • Whit Weeks stepping up as a leader during LSU Texas Bowl prep

Whit Weeks stepping up as a leader during LSU Texas Bowl prep

LSU has arrived in Houston for its Texas Bowl matchup with Baylor on Dec. 31 and one of the most important pieces is starting to raise his voice in the locker room.

Linebacker Whit Weeks is likely to be on many preseason watch lists and All Conference teams in the weeks and months leading up to 2025. After seeing his role greatly improve in year two with the Tigers, leading the team in tackles with 119, which was also good for No. 3 in the conference, Weeks will return as a junior and seasoned vet to help anchor this defense.

The unique story is he’ll have both of his brothers in that linebacker room alongside him but the improvement this defense makes will in part be due to what kind of player Weeks develops into over the course of the next eight months. That process has already begun from a leadership perspective, where Weeks is becoming more vocal in the month since the regular season came to a close.

“100%. I’ve been way more vocal in these practices than I was during the season,” Weeks said.

A happy go lucky person who just loves playing football, there’s another gear that Weeks hasn’t hit as a player and should he reach that height, he’ll be one of the most active defensive players in the entire SEC in 2025. But that will have to come with a focus on improving in a couple of important categories in the spring and summer months.

“Always working on the technical and the tactical. I gotta get better in those areas if I want to reach the goals that I have,” Weeks said.

Luckily he’ll have Blake Baker there to help in that process. Baker has proven he can do wonders with talented linebackers he has multiple years to help shape and Weeks is arguably the most physically gifted inside linebacker in the last five years at LSU. What a junior offseason looks like for him is very exciting to think about as he’ll be at the center of what the Tigers do defensively in 2025.

Mix in West Weeks, Davhon Keys, a talented freshman signing class and several of the transfer portal pieces added to the front seven, this is an athletic, playmaking defense that will have an opportunity to take another critical step forward next season. But before all of that comes into focus, finishing off the calendar year on a high note is where Weeks and this 2024 roster is working towards.

With more than a month to prepare for this bowl game, these practices leading up to the New Year’s Eve matchup with Baylor have been important for the 2025 roster. Incoming freshmen DJ Pickett, Harlem Berry and Damien Shanklin have been a few of the players spotted out at Houston getting some early work in with the team.

But even as LSU gets some of these younger, foundational pieces more involved, there are times where Weeks says the Tigers have had some fun and let loose during practice. One example Weeks gave was the linebackers and running backs switching sides of the ball for a few minutes during 1v1 drills.

LSU will participate in a rodeo event on Thursday that is put on by the Texas Bowl and then rest up before the game on Tuesday. The end goal is to walk out of Houston with a win, which would mean a three game streak to end the year. It’s not where the program wants to be but it is momentum going into the new year.

“We’ve been having a lot of fun out there. When you get to December, it’s a long time until you play so you gotta find ways to have fun,” Weeks said.

As the LSU Tigers gear up for their showdown against Kansas State in the Texas Bowl, senior linebacker Whit Weeks has been making his presence felt as a leader both on and off the field.

Weeks, who has been a key contributor to the Tigers’ defense all season long, has been stepping up his game during practice, pushing his teammates to be their best and leading by example.

His work ethic and determination have not gone unnoticed by his coaches and teammates, who have praised Weeks for his leadership skills and his ability to rally the team together during a crucial time.

As the Tigers continue to prepare for the Texas Bowl, Weeks will be a key figure in guiding his team to victory and setting the tone for a successful performance on the field.

Stay tuned for more updates on Whit Weeks and the LSU Tigers as they gear up for the Texas Bowl showdown against Kansas State. #GeauxTigers #TexasBowlBound

  • Talk radio is perfect prep for being press secretary

Talk radio is perfect prep for being press secretary

Sometime after running for Congress in New Hampshire and before being named President-elect Trump’s White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt was nice enough to fill in for me on The Grace Curley Show during my maternity leave.

I wouldn’t claim that those three months led Karoline — whose résumé includes work for Kayleigh McEnany, Elise Stefanik and Trump — to the White House. But I would argue that hosting a talk show is great preparation for the James S. Brady Press Briefing Room.

First off: she knows that if you lose your temper, you lose. Throughout summer 2023, Karoline heard from listeners about a host of issues, including the Republican primary candidates. A lot of listeners were thrilled at the prospect of former President Trump’s vying for a second term. Then again, plenty (myself included) were not fully convinced he had the kind of broad GOP support he would need to pull off a decisive victory. Karoline, while always respectful to Trump’s detractors, was unmovable. She calmly made the case for Trump at every opportunity — and when she wasn’t promoting his first-term accomplishments, she was listing Biden’s failures in regard to the open southern border or sky-high inflation. If a caller ever got under her skin, you would never have known it.

That kind of steely resolve was on full display a little less than a year later when Karoline, as Trump’s campaign press secretary, faced off with CNN’s Kasie Hunt in a fiery exchange just days before the first presidential debate. Karoline pointed out that CNN’s debate moderator Jake Tapper had compared Donald Trump to Adolf Hitler, causing Hunt to melt down before warning, “We’re going to stop this interview if you are going to keep attacking my colleagues.”

Ignoring Hunt’s increasingly high-pitched tone and patronizing warnings, Karoline continued to call out Tapper’s comments about the former president. Hunt quickly ended the interview.

On my radio program later that day, Karoline described what had happened. “I thought I was still on air,” she revealed. “I was going off about inflation and immigration and President Trump’s strategy for the debates,” she laughed, before adding that a producer had quickly piped in her ear and informed her that she’d been booted off the program. She’d kept her cool — and gone viral in the process.

She understands preparation as well. I’ve learned about it on the fly myself: I had to do a lot of homework on short-selling, fast, in January 2021 when the GameStop Reddit rally hit the news and my knowledge of short-selling was limited to what I’d seen in The Big Short years before. Karoline has had to be fast on her feet too, which will be key to managing press conferences and rapidly moving breaking-news issues. During her fill-in work on my program, it didn’t matter if the news of the day was something she’d been discussing for years or an outrageous new scandal like the cocaine found in the West Wing one afternoon; she was putting in the prep work before the on-air sign turned red.

A White House press secretary is expected to have clear answers on a host of different issues at any given moment. Understanding the importance of rigorous preparation is crucial when dealing with briefing room reporters, many of whom will, of course, go back to their hostile pre-Biden demeanor as soon as possible.

As Karoline stares out at these opportunistic self-identifying “journalists” trying to make a name for themselves, she’ll be in a position to outsmart them simply by outworking them.

Considering she was back on the campaign trail for Trump nine days after giving birth to her son, I doubt that will be an issue.

Donald Trump loves to quote Mike Tyson’s famous line regarding the best-laid plans: “Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face.” I found that out during a segment years ago, when I made a throwaway comment about how I’m not a fan of beagles. Suddenly I was inundated with angry messages about beagles: why they are a wonderful breed of dog and why I am a big fat stupid idiot for suggesting otherwise. All my ideas for the segment were overwhelmed that day by Beaglemania — great radio, but I needed to be able to roll with it.

Karoline’s good at that: on the air one day she took a call from a man who insisted that he and his buddies had seen an alien while they were drinking late one night. It was a hilarious and bizarre phone call and most of the green-room team thought that Karoline, like most political squares, would hurriedly move on and pretend it never happened. Instead, she went with it, getting good radio out of the domino effect; soon callers were lined up for a chance to share their extraterrestrial anecdotes.

Leaning in, embracing change and not shying away from controversy will be indispensable in the White House. Things won’t always go as planned, but Karoline is calm, prepared and flexible. The same skills that helped her become an instant hit on the radio will serve her well behind a new microphone on the briefing room podium.

This article was originally published in The Spectator’s January 2025 World edition.

Talk radio is a fast-paced, high-pressure environment where hosts and guests alike must be quick on their feet, articulate in their responses, and able to handle tough questions with grace and composure. These are all skills that are essential for being an effective press secretary.

Listening to talk radio can help you stay informed on current events, practice thinking on your feet, and improve your ability to communicate clearly and effectively. It can also expose you to a wide range of opinions and perspectives, helping you better anticipate and respond to potential challenges and criticisms in your role as press secretary.

In addition, talk radio is a great way to practice delivering your message in a concise and persuasive manner, as hosts and callers often have limited time to make their points. This can be invaluable when facing a barrage of questions from reporters or trying to convey important information to the public in a clear and compelling way.

So next time you’re looking to sharpen your skills as a press secretary, consider tuning in to talk radio. It just might be the perfect prep you need.

  • Jalen Suggs battles ankle injury as Magic prep for Heat

Jalen Suggs battles ankle injury as Magic prep for Heat

In a modern era of the NBA that’s viewed by some national pundits and former players as soft compared to the past, Magic guard Jalen Suggs is as tough as they come.

A former high school football player and second-team All-Defensive NBA selection a season ago, Suggs brings physicality and aggression on that end of the floor nightly.

    But he’s still human.

So when coach Jamahl Mosley saw that Suggs didn’t immediately pop up after going down while grabbing his left ankle on the Kia Center court late in the first half against the Thunder on Thursday night, there was some concern for the fourth-year pro.

“When he went down the first time, I was extremely nervous and worried,” Mosley said of the moment that occurred with 1:38 left in the second quarter. “I wasn’t going to call the timeout but usually he bounces back up. And then I called the timeout.”

Suggs was able to slowly get to the bench on his own power before the Thunder closed out a 36-18 second quarter en route to a 105-99 win over the Magic.

The Magic guard played four minutes of the third quarter before he exited again for good.

That’s because Mosley recognized something was off with Suggs.

“As he comes out in the second [half] I just saw, there wasn’t a high pace,” the Magic coach said. “I mean, there were moments of it but I just want to make sure he’s going to be OK for the long haul.

“There’s too many things going on with this team when it comes to the injury bug that we want to make sure we’re smart when it comes down to that,” he added.

    It’s hard to blame him.

Orlando — already without stars Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner, who are continuing to recover from the same injury (torn right abdominal muscle) — played majority of the second half without its third best player on the court.

In addition, veteran guard Gary Harris missed his 10th straight contest with a left hamstring strain Thursday.

Beede’s Breakdown: Magic compete hard but lose another starter in loss to Thunder

Second-year guard Anthony Black filled in for Suggs as the Magic battled hard against Oklahoma City, cutting a 23-point deficit to single digits in the third quarter before the Thunder handed the Magic their third straight loss.

Fortunately for Suggs, The Athletic observed him departing Kia Center without a walking boot on his ankle after he rolled it in the first half.

Suggs (right ankle sprain) was listed as probable for Saturday’s game against Miami on Orlando’s initial injury report. Harris is considered questionable.

“He’s a tough kid,” Mosley said. “He wants to be out there and that’s what you see in him. We said it before the game — his passion, his energy, his intensity to want to be on the floor with his guys.”

After beating the Magic, the Thunder traveled south to face the Heat on Friday. Less than 24 hours later, Orlando (17-12) will host Miami at Kia Center on Saturday.

It’s first of two games against between the in-state squads in a span of five days. The Magic will also host the Heat on Thursday after defending champion Boston comes to town Monday.

The Magic defeated the Heat on opening night in Miami, but Banchero and Wagner both were healthy. Since then, Orlando has gone 15-10 without Banchero and 1-3 without the star duo available.

    Magic gift shopping spree

Banchero joined Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and members of the Osceola Magic at a holiday shopping spree for 100 children from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida at a local Walmart on Friday.

Each kid received $300 gift cards courtesy of Banchero, Caldwell-Pope and Pepsi. The pair of Magic teammates and the soft drink manufacturer each donated $10,000 in gift cards that allowed them to buy whatever they wanted ahead of Christmas, as well as the first night of Hanukkah, on Wednesday.

Children who attended the shopping spree were from three local branches of the Boys & Girls Clubs — the Walt Disney World Clubhouse, Levy-Hughes Clubhouse and Bradley-Otis Clubhouse.

The Orlando Magic are gearing up to face off against the Miami Heat, but they may have to do so without one of their key players. Rookie sensation Jalen Suggs is currently battling an ankle injury that has kept him sidelined for the past few games.

Suggs, who has been a standout performer for the Magic this season, suffered the injury in a recent matchup against the Philadelphia 76ers. The team has been cautious with his recovery, but it remains uncertain if he will be able to suit up against the Heat.

Without Suggs in the lineup, the Magic will have to rely on other players to step up and fill the void. Cole Anthony, Franz Wagner, and Mo Bamba will likely take on larger roles in Suggs’ absence, but his presence on the court will certainly be missed.

As the Magic continue to navigate through a challenging season, they will need to show resilience and determination in the face of adversity. The matchup against the Heat will be a tough test, but Orlando is determined to fight through the obstacles and come out victorious.

Stay tuned for updates on Jalen Suggs’ status and be sure to catch the Magic as they take on the Heat in what is sure to be an intense and competitive game.

  • Comedian Nikki Glaser tapped to host Golden Globes after viral Tom Brady roast, prep underway for ‘terrifying’ gig

Comedian Nikki Glaser tapped to host Golden Globes after viral Tom Brady roast, prep underway for ‘terrifying’ gig

Nikki Glaser has been tapped to host the Golden Globes as her viral excerpt from the roast of Tom Brady continues to make the social media rounds. The Emmy nominated American comedian is currently running ‘joke prep’ with a team of about 10 writers in Missouri ahead of the award ceremony on January 5. Glaser is also a first time nominee for ‘best performance in stand-up comedy on television’ — apart from being the first solo female host in Golden Globes history.

“It is a gig that a lot of people turn down because it’s so terrifying. I actively want things that are live and I think a lot of other performers just do not like it,” she told the Wall Street Journal earlier this week.

Glaser has made a name for herself as a riotously sharp wit in recent years with a special knack for roasts. Videos of the 40-year-old needling football star Tom Brady for his complex love life and his one-time advocacy of crypto continue during a Netflix roast have repeatedly gone viral on social media platforms this year.

Hosting an award show has become a tricky prospect in recent years — with several prominent comedians reportedly turning down calls to host the Globes last year. The job eventually went to Jo Koy at the last minute but appeared to go badly wrong with a fumbled opening monologue and a rushed pace. By most accounts it was an awkward few minutes — with celebrities far from amused by his monologue and some glaring as ill-received jokes fell flat.

Glaser however remains undaunted, telling WSJ about plans to touch upon several tricky topics during her address. The comedian expects to mine the “Wicked” press tour, the Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs sex trafficking case, US President-elect Donald Trump and more.

The comedian has also made several appearances on Amazon Prime Video’s “Thursday Night Football” postgame show in recent weeks. Her ‘Late Hits’ segment however requires Glaser and her writers to come up with material as the game is taking place.

“I give her and her team a ton of credit because what they did was they took a risk by doing live stand-up comedy on a sports show. And there’s no way we could have rehearsed what our first one was going to be like. None of us knew what the reaction would be in the crowd,” said Spoon Daftary, senior coordinating producer at Prime Video’s pregame, halftime and postgame shows.

    (With inputs from agencies)

Comedian Nikki Glaser has been selected to host the upcoming Golden Globes ceremony after her viral roast of Tom Brady caught the attention of producers. Glaser, known for her sharp wit and no-holds-barred humor, is currently in preparation for what she describes as a “terrifying” gig.

In a recent interview, Glaser expressed both excitement and nerves about the opportunity to host such a high-profile event. “I can’t believe they picked me,” she said. “I’m honored and terrified at the same time. But I’m ready to bring some laughs and shake things up.”

Glaser’s roast of Brady, which took place at a charity event last month, quickly went viral, with many praising her comedic timing and fearless approach. It seems that her performance caught the eye of the Golden Globes producers, who are hoping she can bring the same energy and humor to their show.

Preparations for the ceremony are already underway, with Glaser working closely with writers and producers to fine-tune her material. “I want to make sure I do justice to this opportunity and deliver a memorable performance,” she said.

Fans of Glaser can expect plenty of laughs and maybe a few surprises when she takes the stage at the Golden Globes. Stay tuned for what is sure to be a night to remember with Nikki Glaser at the helm.
