  • Parliament denounces the upcoming sham presidential election in Belarus | News

Denouncing the ongoing and long-standing grave violations of human rights and democratic principles in Belarus, which have further intensified in the run-up to the so-called presidential election on 26 January, Parliament asks the EU, its member states and the international community not to recognise the legitimacy of incumbent dictator Aliaksandr Lukashenka as president after the vote. With Mr Lukashenka having ruled Belarus ruthlessly since 1994, MEPs note that, unlike in 2020 there are only pro forma ‘candidates’ to challenge him in this month’s election. While reiterating their non-recognition of Mr Lukashenka as President and their position that the entire Belarusian regime is illegitimate, MEPs express their unwavering support for the Belarusian people in their pursuit of democracy, freedom and human rights.

Parliament wants to strengthen EU sanctions against Belarus

MEPs are also gravely concerned about the situation of political prisoners in Belarus, of which, according to the Belarusian human rights organisation Viasna, there are over 1200. The resolution calls on the EU and its member states to continue investigating human rights abuses in the country and to support accountability measures, including through the application of the “universal jurisdiction” legal principle. MEPs also denounce the Lukashenka regime’s complicity in Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and condemns its deliberate subordination of Belarus to Russia in a so-called union state. They urge the EU and its international partners to broaden and strengthen sanctions against individuals and entities responsible for the repression in Belarus and for Belarus’ participation in Russia’s war in Ukraine.

For all the details, the resolution will be available in full here (22.01.2025). It was adopted by 567 votes in favour, 25 against with 66 abstentions. If you want to know how each MEP voted, click here.

The Parliament has strongly condemned the upcoming sham presidential election in Belarus, stating that it is a blatant attempt to undermine democracy and suppress the will of the people.

In a statement released today, members of Parliament expressed their deep concern over the current political situation in Belarus and the government’s systematic crackdown on opposition candidates and activists.

The upcoming election, scheduled for next month, has been widely criticized for its lack of transparency and fairness. Opposition candidates have been harassed, detained, and even barred from running, while the government has resorted to intimidation tactics to silence dissenting voices.

Parliament has called on the international community to stand in solidarity with the people of Belarus and to hold the government accountable for its actions. They have urged for free and fair elections to be held, and for the rights and freedoms of all Belarusian citizens to be respected.

As the situation in Belarus continues to escalate, Parliament has vowed to stand firm in their support for democracy and human rights, and to continue to denounce any attempts to undermine the will of the people. They have called on all democratic nations to join them in condemning the sham presidential election and in supporting the people of Belarus in their fight for freedom and democracy.

Why Michael J. Fox Received a Presidential Medal of Freedom

    By Movieguide® Contributor

Actor Michael J. Fox was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom on Jan. 4 by former president Joe Biden for his work towards Parkinson’s disease research.

“Michael J. Fox is one of the most beloved actors of our time. With remarkable wit and charm, he introduced iconic characters to the center of American culture, from Alex P. Keaton to Marty McFly and more,” an introduction of Fox’s work read. “With undaunted resilience and optimism, he also warms hearts and captivates audiences as a fearless advocate for those with Parkinson’s disease. Channeling his endearing personality to advance treatments moves us closer to a cure and reminds us of the power of American possibilities.”

Presidential Medal of Freedom is the highest honor a civilian can receive and is given to those who provide “exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values or security of the United States, world peace, or other significant societal, public or private endeavors.”

“Receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom is humbling, an honor I could never have anticipated,” said Fox, who was diagnosed with the disease over 30 years ago. “I’m grateful for this recognition, which I share with the patients, families and researchers who have brought us closer than ever to ending Parkinson’s disease once and for all.”

The actor founded the Michael J. Fox Foundation in 2000. According to its website, the foundation is the largest nonprofit funder of Parkinson’s research, giving more than $2 billion to those seeking to end the disease.

“On behalf of the million or so people living with Parkinson’s, and the millions more who love them, I am proud and honored to accept the Medal of Freedom from President Biden,” Fox wrote on Instagram. “No doubt I get the most attention in the PD community, but this is our fight and support and recognition on this level is a great boost. I still believe with all my heart we will eliminate Parkinson’s disease and all who have joined in the fight will have played a part in the victory. Thank you. With Hope and Gratitude, Michael J. Fox.”
Biden presented the award to other notable figures earlier this month including U2 singer and humanitarian Bono, fashion designer Ralph Lauren, Billy Nye the “Science Guy,” actor Denzel Washington, basketball legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson and Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, Reuters reported.

  • Why the recent blizzard of presidential pardons is ‘striking’ and ‘highly unusual’

There have been preemptive pardons and mass pardons in the past, but never has the United States seen both happening at once in the numbers that just occurred between the outgoing Biden administration and the incoming Trump administration.

There have been preemptive pardons and mass pardons in the past, but never has the United States seen both happening at once in the numbers that just occurred between the outgoing Biden administration and the incoming Trump administration.

“It’s quite striking,” said Karen Hult, a political science professor at Virginia Tech. “It is highly unusual, especially coming from both sides — both the outgoing president and the incoming president.”

Former President Joe Biden pardoned his siblings and their spouses on his way out of the White House on Monday, saying that his family had been “subjected to unrelenting attacks and threats, motivated solely by a desire to hurt me — the worst kind of partisan politics.”

That came after Biden pardoned Dr. Anthony Fauci, retired Gen. Mark Milley, members of the House committee that investigated the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol and allies who have been targeted by President Donald Trump.

It was a remarkable use of Biden’s presidential power. None of the above have been charged with any crime, and the move was designed to guard against possible retribution by Trump.

“Probably the only other analog could be Gerald Ford’s pardoning of Richard Nixon because that, indeed, was preemptive before he’d actually been charged in a court of law for anything,” Hult said.

    That happened back in 1974.

Shortly after taking office this week, Trump pardoned, commuted the prison sentences or vowed to dismiss the cases of all of the 1,500-plus people charged with crimes in the Jan. 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol riot, including people convicted of assaulting police officers.

According to Hult, that could be compared to former President Jimmy Carter’s pardon for those who evaded the Vietnam War draft between 1964 and 1973.

“That probably was closest to the scale that we saw with President Trump,” Hult said.

Notably, however, Carter’s proclamation excluded deserters, recipients of dishonorable discharges and those who committed violence during anti-war protests.

Hult said she believed this new era, where the pardon has become front and center in politics, will likely be around for a while.

“It does seem as though that it may well be here, at least for the foreseeable future, and that’s to say perhaps for the next several decades,” Hult said.

The recent blizzard of presidential pardons has left many experts and political analysts scratching their heads. The sheer number and nature of the pardons granted by President Trump in his final days in office have been described as “striking” and “highly unusual” by many.

Typically, presidents use their pardon power sparingly and strategically, often waiting until the end of their term to grant controversial pardons. However, Trump has broken with this tradition by granting pardons to a wide range of individuals, including political allies, wealthy donors, and even family members.

The speed and volume of the pardons have also raised eyebrows, with many questioning whether Trump is using his pardon power to reward loyalty and protect himself and his associates from potential legal trouble.

Overall, the recent blizzard of presidential pardons has sparked a heated debate about the limits of executive power and the need for reform in the pardon process. Only time will tell what the long-term consequences of these pardons will be, but one thing is for certain: they have left a lasting impact on the political landscape.

  • ‘I’m not going to be a part of them trying to rewrite history’: Idaho woman who took part in Jan. 6 Capitol riots, rejects presidential pardon

Pam Hemphill denies being a victim and does not want to be included in the presidential pardon.

IDAHO, USA — The day before she drove herself to California, to begin her federal prison sentence, Pam Hemphill admitted she believed the big lie.

“I did. I went along with everything I’m hearing,” Hemphill said. “Yeah, I paid a big price for this.”

Hemphill spent two months in the Federal Correctional Institution in Dublin, California, for taking part in the Capitol riots on Jan. 6, 2021.

The 71 year-old said she was able to lower her sentence because she agreed to a plea deal. She signed off on one misdemeanor count of demonstrating, parading, or picketing inside the U.S. Capitol building.

Hemphill was a “J-Sixer,” a core believer that Joe Biden stole the 2020 Presidential Election. Which is why she was part of the hundred who stormed the U.S. Capitol Building. According to prosecutors, she “repeatedly turned to police for help while simultaneously undermining their efforts.”

In May of 2022, she was sentenced to 60 days in prison, three years probation, and a $500 fine.

That summer Hemphill became known as the “MAGA Granny.” In many people’s eyes, she was simply a cancer patient who was wrongfully incarcerated in a California women’s prison and housed with cartel members and convicted murderers.

However, that’s not the story Hemphill wants attached to her.

She denied her victimhood when KTVB spoke with her nearly two years ago. She has denied it in countless national and international interviews since, and she denies it today. While she was included in the 1,500 plus Jan. 6 pardons issued by President Trump on Monday, Hemphill does not want to be.

She describes her time in prison as a nightmare.

“I’m claustrophobic. Thank God the doors aren’t locked, but you can’t go out,” she said. “You just learn to do it five minutes at a time, ten minutes at a time. You focus on watching TV all day. That’s all I did.”

At the time, Hemphill admitted had her guilt and resigned herself to her punishment.

“I broke the law. It’s just that simple,” she said. “I had a choice. I’m not a victim; I could have left. ‘No,’ I thought, ‘I’m going to stay there and videotape.’”

Federal Prosecutors said Hemphill did much more than videotape.

With her phone camera recording for most of the morning and into the afternoon that day, she followed the crowd from the Trump rally in Ellipse Park to the Capitol. She believed they were going to be allowed through the barricades.

Hemphill, who was recovering from a recent surgery, says she struggled to keep up with the crowd and she was getting forced against the fence.

“An officer pulls me over, and I thought, ‘Ok, he’s letting me in first.’ So, I go around, and oh my gosh, this is the worst part,” she remembers. “I was saying (to the others still outside the fence), ‘Come on, what are you doing? It’s our house,” she said. “What are you doing? Just get in here. It’s your house.”

She says she was directed back outside the barrier. But the crowd did not take long to follow her suggestion. Hemphill said she was swept along by the crowd who broke through the fence and the officers and made their way to the Capitol Building.

“When I got to the steps, they knocked me down, stepped on my head, pulled out my shoulder, broke my glasses, I was not breathing,” Hemphill said. “If it wasn’t for the Capitol Police Officers, I wouldn’t be here ’cause I couldn’t breathe. They pulled me up and put me behind them.”

The turning point for Hemphill came weeks later, as she learned how much of the “Stop the Steal” movement was based on lies.

“They’re lying about everything. (They) said the doors were opened by the officers, and they were not,” she said. “Everything starts with Trump saying the election was stolen. That’s where it all started. It wasn’t stolen.”

On Monday, she learned she had been issued a pardon.

“I’m not going to take it. I gotta do some research on who to contact to refuse it,” she said. “If I took a pardon, then what I did that day was ok. It wasn’t.

“I’m not going to be a part of them trying to rewrite history,” she added. “That what they did that day was ok. I broke the law, I pay the price.”

Since before and after her time in prison Hemphill has spoken out about her mistakes on January 6.

“It’s my amends for every being there that day,” she said. “The least I could do compared to what the Capitol Police Officers went through that day. Oh my god. They still haven’t put up that plaque for them.”

She would like to see that plaque put up. She said she hopes to meet them, hug them, and apologize.

“I’m so sorry I was ever there that day, that I was a part of that garbage,” Hemphill said. “I’ve gotta live the rest of my life knowing I was there, a part of it, you know, cheering it on. That’s why I gotta speak out, be vulnerable. Death threats, whatever, I have to feel that I’ve done the best that I can to let others know that whatever happened that day was wrong.”

She said that now she knows it was an insurrection and called the rioters criminals, and she is hoping that her voice will make a difference.

“It’s the right thing to do to let people know that I was wrong that day and we all were wrong that day,” Hemphill said.

Hemphill says she is currently cancer-free and plans to complete the eight months she has left of her probation.

She does worry these pardons will open the door to a new definition of “a peaceful protest.”

Since her release from prison in September of 2022, Hemphill has been very vocal about distancing herself from the tragic events of January 6 and criticizing other “J-Sixers” for not doing the same.

She admits that has garnered her a great deal of harassment and even death threats. She says has lost friends, family members and MAGA faithful over her stance.

But she’s not worried about those things and it’s not going to stop her from speaking out.

On January 6, 2021, the world watched in horror as a violent mob stormed the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. Among those who took part in the insurrection was an Idaho woman who has since rejected a presidential pardon.

In a statement released to the media, the woman, who has chosen to remain anonymous, declared, “I will not be a part of them trying to rewrite history. I made a mistake that day, and I take full responsibility for my actions. I do not deserve a pardon for what I did.”

The woman went on to express regret for her role in the riots and urged others who participated to do the same. She emphasized the importance of accountability and reconciliation in order to heal the deep divisions that have torn the country apart.

As the nation continues to grapple with the aftermath of the Capitol riots, this woman’s refusal to accept a pardon serves as a powerful reminder of the need for individuals to take responsibility for their actions and work towards building a more just and inclusive society.

  • Trump fires Keisha Lance Bottoms from presidential council. She points out she already quit.

Bottoms, the former mayor of Atlanta, told the new president he was, “a day late and a dollar short.”

The first 24 hours of President Donald Trump‘s second term have come with a flurry of executive actions, including orders “restoring” the death penalty and reversing President Joe Biden’s executive order advancing racial equity throughout the federal government.

Just after midnight, following a series of inaugural events on Monday night, Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to announce personnel changes to several presidential councils. “YOU’RE FIRED,” wrote the former host of “The Apprentice.”

Formerly Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms was among the first names Trump announced as being terminated from their posts. Bottoms was appointed by President Biden to serve on the President’s Export Council, a national advisory committee on international trade.

Though it’s not surprising that Trump focused on Bottoms, a former Biden White House senior advisor, the newly inaugurated president’s move to fire the political appointee was too late as Bottoms had already quit the position. On Tuesday, Bottoms took to Instagram to share a letter of resignation she sent to President Biden on Jan. 4.

“In anticipation of the transition of the Administration, effective January 20, 2025, I am resigning as a member of the President’s Export Council. Thank you for the opportunity to serve,” Bottoms wrote to Biden.

Following Trump’s after-hours Truth Social post, Bottoms slammed President Trump for being “A day late and a dollar short.” She added, “You can’t fire someone who has already resigned.”

“Of all of the things happening in the world, not sure why I am on Donald Trump’s mind at 1:30 am following his Inauguration, but I count it as a badge of honor,” said Bottoms. She continued, “I do hope that his attention to detail will be much more keen when it comes to world affairs. There are real issues that need attention across the globe.”

Mark Milley, an Army general who served as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under both Presidents Trump and Biden, was also “fired” by Trump in his late-night post. Milley, who clashed with Trump during his first term, was appointed by Biden to the National Infrastructure Advisory Council. Trump also announced the termination of Brian Hook from the Wilson Center for Scholars and Jose Andres from the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition.

Though, as president, Trump has the authority and discretion to appoint and unappoint as he pleases, Bottoms noted that there are far more important matters the 47th commander-in-chief should be focused on.

“No matter how you voted, I think we can all agree that targeting me, along with a man who is feeding displaced people in Los Angeles and a decorated military General in the early morning hours via social media is not the best use of time for the President of the United States,” she said.

    More must-reads:

In a surprising turn of events, President Trump has announced that he has fired Keisha Lance Bottoms from his presidential council. However, Bottoms quickly took to social media to point out that she had already resigned from the council weeks ago.

In a tweet, Bottoms stated, “I resigned from the presidential council weeks ago, so I’m not sure what the President is talking about. It seems like he is just trying to create controversy where there is none.”

This latest development adds to the ongoing tensions between the President and Bottoms, who has been a vocal critic of Trump’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and racial unrest in the country.

It remains to be seen how this latest incident will impact their already strained relationship, but one thing is for sure – Keisha Lance Bottoms is not one to back down without a fight. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.

Rabbi Berman’s blessing, immediately following President Trump’s inaugural address, will call for the nation to rise to this historic moment and unite around America’s foundational values as a source for realizing our shared dreams of a prosperous, compassionate country led by faith and trust in God. Rabbi Berman is the first American-Israeli to deliver remarks at a presidential inauguration, during which he will also pray for the wellbeing and safe return of the hostages who remain captive in Gaza.

Notably, at a time of great disruption on college campuses, Rabbi Berman will be the only university president delivering remarks during the ceremony and will speak to the aspirations of faith based and values driven universities across the nation.

Rabbi Berman said, “On behalf of Yeshiva University I am deeply honored to have been asked to deliver the Benediction at this momentous time. As I prepare my remarks, I am inspired by the words of the prophet Jeremiah, who thousands of years ago walked through the roads of Jerusalem, the eternal capital of Israel, and proclaimed ‘Blessed is the one who trusts in God.’ I pray that we are all united around the core values of life and liberty, of service and sacrifice, and especially of faith and morality, which George Washington called the ‘indispensable supports’ of American prosperity.”

Ira Mitzner, Chairman of Yeshiva University’s Board of Trustees, said, “Having Rabbi Berman deliver the Benediction is a testament to his leadership and to the prominence of Yeshiva University. As the nation’s flagship Jewish university, with an unwavering commitment to Torah values and academic excellence, Yeshiva University is a leading institution of higher education that is readying the next generation to contribute to society and live their most fulfilling lives. Beyond campus, Rabbi Berman has emerged as a national leader for moral clarity and higher education. He founded a coalition of over 100 university presidents united against terrorism following the October 7th attacks in Israel and led the first-ever delegation of university presidents on the March of the Living to Auschwitz. A founding member of the ACE Commission on Faith-Based Colleges and Universities, Rabbi Berman helped bring together leaders from institutions such as Notre Dame, Baylor, Pepperdine, and Brigham Young University to advance access, affordability, and innovation in higher education while highlighting the essential contributions of faith-based institutions across the broader educational landscape.

A global faith leader, Rabbi Berman bridges diverse communities. He delivered the keynote address at the first Holocaust Commemoration Day in an Arab country in Dubai; presented a nationally viewed address at Brigham Young University on the transformative power of education; led a sustainability forum in Abu Dhabi promoting interfaith peace; joined global leaders in Hiroshima to champion human dignity in AI; and delivered the prestigious Hildesheimer Lecture in Berlin, analyzing the legal and historical intersections of Jewish and non-Jewish communities and presenting a hopeful vision for the future.

  • List of Foods Donald Trump Will Eat for His First Presidential Meal

Donald Trump is hours away from his first meal as the 47th president of the United States, and the menu includes appetizers from the Northeast and dessert from the Midwest.

    Why This Matters

Trump will be sworn back into the White House at noon, just in time for lunch. After the inauguration ceremony, he will head to the U.S. Capitol to attend a luncheon hosted by the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies (JCCIC). It will also be the first inaugural luncheon since 2017, as the 2021 event was canceled amid the coronavirus pandemic.

    What To Know

Like past the inaugural luncheons, Monday’s event will serve a three-course meal with seafood, a meat entrée, and dessert.

Trump’s first course will be a Chesapeake crab cake with tomato tartar, bay sauce, pickled vegetables, romanesco, dill and chive oil.

For the main course, Trump will feast on steak from Omaha. The Angus rib-eye will accompany carrots, broccoli rabe, red wine truffle jus and potato gratin.

And, of course, no presidential meal is complete without dessert. Before wrapping up lunch, Trump and other attendees will be served a Minnesota apple ice box terrine with sour cream ice cream and salted caramel.

Guests will be welcomed with a glass of sparkling wine from New Mexico, and each course comes with its own wine pairing: a chardonnay from Monticello, Virginia, a cabernet sauvignon from Napa Valley, California and a natural sparkling blend from Sonoma County, California, respectively.

Trump, who has been outspoken about his sobriety, will likely not participate in the pairings, but his favorite beverage—Diet Coke—will probably be ready for pour. News reports say he regularly drank 12 cans a day during his first term.

In 2017, Trump and his approximately 200 luncheon guests dined on Maine lobster and gulf shrimp, followed by a main of grilled Seven Hills Angus beef and dessert of chocolate souffle with cherry vanilla ice cream.

The Inaugural Luncheon was first held in 1897, but its current form began in 1953, according to the JCCIC’s website.

“Often featuring cuisine reflecting the home states of the new President and Vice President or the JCCIC Chairman, as well as the theme of the Inauguration, the luncheon program includes speeches, gift presentations from the JCCIC, and toasts to the new administration,” the website states.

Former Presidents Bill Clinton, George Bush and Barack Obama will not attend the lunch.

    What People Are Saying

Margo Martin, Trump’s deputy director of communications, wrote on X, formerly Twitter, last week: “Tonight, President Trump received the first ever Presidential Commemorative Inaugural Diet Coke bottle from the Chairman and CEO of Coca-Cola Company, James Quincey.”

Andre Rush, a chef who worked in the White House kitchen during Trump’s first term, told Politico last month: “[Trump] gets so much flack about the unhealthy side of him. He does try to eat healthy, but people don’t get to see that part of it. They just see the part that we want to show on social media. I mean, Bill Clinton ate just as many burgers as Donald Trump did.”

    What Happens Next

The transfer of power is slated to take place at exactly noon, per the United States Constitution. After Trump delivers his inaugural address, there will be an official farewell and ceremonial departure for Trump and soon-to-be Vice President JD Vance. The two are then expected to sign any nominations, memorandums, proclamations and executive orders in the president’s room before heading to lunch.

    1. Trump Steaks – As a businessman, Trump has his own line of steaks and it would only be fitting for him to enjoy one of his own products for his first presidential meal.
    2. McDonald’s Big Mac – Trump has been known to enjoy fast food, particularly McDonald’s, so a Big Mac would be a likely choice for his first meal in office.
    3. KFC Fried Chicken – Another fast food favorite of Trump’s, a bucket of KFC fried chicken would surely satisfy his taste buds.
    4. Diet Coke – Trump is known to be a fan of Diet Coke, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see him enjoy a cold can of his favorite beverage with his meal.
    5. Well-done Steak – Trump has famously stated that he likes his steak well-done, so a juicy, well-done steak would likely be on the menu for his first presidential meal.
    6. Ice Cream – Trump has a reported sweet tooth, so a scoop of ice cream for dessert would be a fitting end to his first meal as president.
    7. Diet Pepsi – In addition to Diet Coke, Trump is also a fan of Diet Pepsi, so a can of this soda may also be included in his meal.

Overall, Trump’s first presidential meal may consist of a mix of fast food favorites, steaks, and sweet treats that reflect his personal tastes and preferences.
