The Atlanta Falcons will face off against the Carolina Panthers in a game that will have implications for the NFC South standings. The Falcons are looking to secure a wild card spot, while the Panthers are playing for pride after a disappointing season. Quarterback Matt Ryan will lead the charge for Atlanta, while the Panthers will look to their defense to try and slow down the Falcons’ offense. Keep an eye on the matchup between Falcons wide receiver Kyle Pitts and Panthers cornerback Donte Jackson.

  • Brooklyn Nets vs. Milwaukee Bucks preview: Nets wrap up New Year’s road trip

Brooklyn Nets vs. Milwaukee Bucks preview: Nets wrap up New Year’s road trip

Back at it. The Brooklyn Nets rang in the New Year with a trip to Canada to face the Toronto Raptors. The Nets fought hard, but the Raps got hot and ended their 11 game losing streak. This is night two of a back-to-back for Jordi Fernandez and the Nets so we’ll see how they manage things this evening.

The Nets will be meeting a familiar foe. The Milwaukee Bucks are healthier than when we last saw them, and it couldn’t have come at a better time. They came back from a 19 point deficit to beat the Indiana Pacers to close out 2024. Milwaukee is back in the top six of the Eastern Conference and hope to keep climbing the ranks from here.

    Where to follow the game

YES Network on TV. WFAN on radio. Tip after 7:30 PM.

    Injuries

No Bojan Bogdanovic, Trendon Watford, or Ziaire Williams. Cam Thomas missed yesterday’s game as part of injury management, but is expected back tonight. Ben Simmons played yesterday, so chances are he’ll miss this one. Noah Clowney took a hard fall last night and had to exit the game. We’ll see how he is today. The worst news, however, may be Maxwell Lewis. He left last night’s game with a knee injury. He will be undergoing an MRI sometime today and the team will be releasing an update. Hoping for the best.

Giannis Antetokounmpo (right patella tendinopathy) and Khris Middleton (recovery from ankle surgery) are both probable.

    The game

Brooklyn won the first and third meetings while Milwaukee won the second contest. This is the last matchup between the two teams this season.

So, when do we start the Giannis is MVP talks? The Greek Freak has been sensational this season and turned it up a notch after Pascal Siakam pissed him off

When he’s got the midrange jumper going, look out. Like all superstars of his ilk, when they’re consistently making jump shots, it makes life hell on opponents. Riley Feldmann of Brew Hoop has more:

There is a reason why we salivate over the possibility of Giannis ever happening upon a jumpshot that has any level of replicability: it’d instantly transform the depth of his offensive game from dominance to possible transcendence. About 22% of his two point looks have been pull-ups this season which is his highest mark since 2021-2022 and he’s making them at a 43.6% rate. Definitely something to keep an eye on heading forward.

My my my. Not that you need more discussion about how amazing Antetokounmpo, but our guys Nekias Duncan and Steve Jones Jr talked about Giannis and the MVP race on the latest edition of The Dunker Spot

It’s time to hoop it up!

Assuming Simmons is out, D’Angelo Russell figures to get back into the Brooklyn Nets starting lineup, 2081 days after his last time in the black and white.

DLo looked terrific in his Brooklyn return as he scored 22 points and handed out eight assists off the bench last night. Not bad for a guy who didn’t have a practice between Sunday’s trade and last night.

He gives the Nets another player who can get their own shot on offense, and that can help keep them close on nights they can’t make anything shake in transition. It will also be fun to see how he and Cam Thomas work as a backcourt tandem. CT is building himself back up from an extended injury absence, so managing his minutes and workload will be a fun subplot to the next week of Nets basketball.

Slowing Damian Lillard down will be a fun challenge for this Nets team. Dame had a rough outing on Tuesday as the Pacers picked up from three quarters court and did everything to make things tough on him. The Nets defense stunk last night, so we know the focus tonight will be on cleaning things up on that side of the ball.

    Player to watch: Brook Lopez

Always great to see an old friend. Amazingly, this is his seventh season as a member of the Bucks. In that time, he’s continued to evolve his game and is incredibly reliable for the Bucks on both sides of the ball. The 36-year-old appeared in every game for the Bucks thus far and will be someone Doc Rivers counts on to keep the team’s defense on the rise. Milwaukee’s defensive rating has improved each month this season and if you’re able to defend, you’re able to contend.

Nic Claxton picked up a double-double last night, but he will need to get the team’s defense back on track. Of Toronto’s 130 points, 60 of them were in the painted area. Even though the Bucks are 26th in paint points this year, anyone can happily take layups if you let them. On the other side, it will be interesting to watch Clax do some more in the half court. He certainly has the potential to be pretty solid

The skill is there. Just gotta put it together night after night.

    From the Vault

The voting process for the Naismith Hall of Fame is underway, and former Buck Terry Cummings is a candidate for induction. TC was an excellent player across the 1980s and 1990s, and on some nights, he was even a good singer. Now that’s versatility!

The Brooklyn Nets are set to take on the Milwaukee Bucks in their final game of the New Year’s road trip. Both teams are coming off strong performances and will be looking to secure a win to close out the year on a high note.

The Nets have been on a hot streak lately, winning four of their last five games. Their offense has been firing on all cylinders, with Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving leading the charge. Durant has been especially impressive, averaging over 30 points per game in his last five outings.

On the other hand, the Bucks have also been playing well, winning three of their last four games. Giannis Antetokounmpo has been his usual dominant self, putting up monster numbers on both ends of the court.

This matchup promises to be an exciting one, with two of the top teams in the Eastern Conference going head-to-head. The Nets will need to contain Antetokounmpo and the Bucks’ potent offense, while also finding a way to break through Milwaukee’s tough defense.

With both teams at full strength and playing at a high level, this game is sure to be a thriller. Tune in to see who comes out on top in this battle between two Eastern Conference powerhouses.

Capitals vs. Wild Preview: Line Combinations, Stats, Storylines To Watch

WASHINGTON — Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals are in for one final showdown with Marc-Andre Fleury in the District, as they play host to the Minnesota Wild on Thursday.

Here’s everything to know before puck drop at 7 p.m. at Capital One Arena.

    Washington Capitals Line Combinations

The Capitals will keep the same lineup as last game against the Boston Bruins, with the only change coming in goal as Charlie Lindgren starts.

    Here are the projected combinations:

    Alex Ovechkin-Dylan Strome-Aliaksei Protas

    Connor McMichael-Pierre-Luc Dubois-Tom Wilson

    Andrew Mangiapane-Lars Eller-Ivan Miroshnichenko

    Brandon Duhaime-Nic Dowd-Taylor Raddysh

    Rasmus Sandin-John Carlson

    Jakob Chychrun-Trevor van Riemsdyk

    Martin Fehervary-Matt Roy

    Charlie Lindgren

    Logan Thompson

    Washington Capitals Stats

    – Pierre-Luc Dubois has points in six of his last seven games and leads Washington in scoring since Nov. 21.

Jakob Chychrun has 17 points in his last 17 games, and his 11 goals are the most among all NHL defensemen.

    – Nic Dowd is riding a three-game point streak.

    Washington Capitals Storylines

    – Thursday marks what will likely be Marc-Andre Fleury‘s final game at Capital One Arena. No goaltender has surrendered more goals to Alex Ovechkin (27) than Fleury, and at the same time, no goaltender has played in more games against No. 8 than him (46 regular-season games, 65 total games).

    – Speaking of Ovechkin, he’s entering his fourth game back from a broken leg that held him out for roughly five weeks. Look for him to continue to get back to his game; he has two goals in three outings since coming back.

    – Watch out for Aliaksei Protas, who has four goals in his last five games and continues to be dangerous at both ends of the ice for D.C.

The Wild, on the other hand, have been solid on the penalty kill, with an 82.9% success rate. It will be crucial for both teams to capitalize on special teams opportunities in this game.

    3. Goaltending Battle: Capitals goaltender Ilya Samsonov has been solid between the pipes, posting a 2.82 GAA and a .907 save percentage. On the other side, Wild goalie Cam Talbot has been impressive with a 2.54 GAA and a .915 save percentage. The battle between these two netminders will be key in determining the outcome of the game.

The Red Wings ended the tumultuous calendar year by giving their new coach something to be excited about heading into 2024. With just a few months left in the regular season, Detroit needs to start stringing victories together if they want any chance of getting back into the playoff race. With players like Sean Monahan, Kirill Marchenko and Zach Werenski leading the charge, Columbus sits fifth in the Metropolitan Division, two points out of a Wild Card spot.

This will be the first of three meetings this season between the former division rivals. Last year, the Wings won all three games against the Jackets.

  • PREVIEW: Blue Jackets begin 2025 by hosting the Red Wings

PREVIEW: Blue Jackets begin 2025 by hosting the Red Wings

When it comes to measuring stick games, the Blue Jackets have fared well this season.

Columbus has 16 victories this year, and 10 of them have been against teams that made it to the Stanley Cup Playoffs a season ago. The latest came New Year’s Eve, as the Blue Jackets won a 4-3 shootout final over a team that’s made the postseason six straight years and won three of the last four Metropolitan Division titles.

Perhaps more important was the way the Blue Jackets did it. Carolina led 3-2 going into the third period, but the Blue Jackets played their best hockey in the final frame, equalized the score and earned just their second victory when trailing after two periods this season.

“I hope it’s a wonderful sign, obviously, moving forward,” head coach Dean Evason said. “We’ve handled adversity up to this point, and now you’re going to have to handle a lot more. But to do it against that team, such a good hockey club – Carolina is so good, put so much heat on us. We didn’t handle it in (some) areas, but at the end of the day we got the job done. We’re resilient. We stayed the course, we don’t panic on our bench, and that’s exciting for us.”

The victory moved Columbus to within two points of the final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference as the calendar turns to 2025, and there’s a lot of reasons to like the way the team is playing of late. The Blue Jackets have points in five of the last six games (4-1-1), as the team’s best players like top-line forwards Dmitri Voronkov, Sean Monahan and Kirill Marchenko and top defenseman Zach Werenski have been among the league’s top scorers in that span.

The next step is finding some consistency and perhaps some scoring balance in the lineup, but the most important part might be learning how to win and believing you can go toe-to-toe against the best. The Blue Jackets have made major strides in those categories this season, and they hope they can carry the momentum from the Carolina win into the new year.

“When you win games like this – you come back, you do it on home ice – those are fun, and those are the ones you have to try to build off of,” Monahan said.

Next up is taking on a Detroit team that the Blue Jackets will face March 1 in the Navy Federal Credit Union NHL Stadium Series game in Ohio Stadium. Columbus has been excellent at home, posting a 12-4-3 record and leading the league with 76 goals scored at home (4.00 average).

Know The Foe: Detroit Red Wings

Head coach: Todd McLellan (First season)

    Team stats: Goals per game: 2.62 (28th) | Scoring defense: 3.24 (24th) | PP: 24.1 percent (9th) | PK: 69.6 percent (31st)

The narrative: After a historic 25-season streak of making the postseason, the Red Wings have failed to make the Stanley Cup Playoffs eight straight seasons. There were high hopes a young core mixed with veterans would keep that run from reaching nine years, but Detroit has scuffled through most of the season culminating in the firing of head coach Derek Lalonde on Dec. 26. New head man McLellan has skipped the team to two wins in his first three games while trying to bring the fun back to the Motor City.

Team leaders: The Red Wings have a keeper in Lucas Raymond, as the 22-year-old Swede who was taken fourth overall in the 2020 draft scored 31 goals last season and leads the squad with 15 goals and 38 points this year. Captain Dylan Larkin is next with a 13-16-29 line, while dangerous goal scorer Alex DeBrincat ties Raymond with 15 goals among his 28 points. Mortiz Seider leads the defense with 20 points on four goals and 16 assists, but he’s the only other Red Wing with at least 20 points as secondary scoring has been hard to come by.

Cam Talbot has started a team-high 18 games in net and is 6-9-2 with a 2.98 GAA and .906 save percentage. Alex Lyon (7-5-0, 2.83, .899) is the primary backup, while veteran Ville Husso has struggled and spent time in the minors this season.

What’s new: McLellan’s tenure started with a loss vs. Toronto, but the Red Wings have won consecutive home games by a 4-2 score over Washington and Pittsburgh. We’ll see the long-term impact of the coaching change, but the Red Wings have a hole to dig out of in the standings as they sit six points out of the final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference.

Trending: Detroit swept the season series a year ago, as Columbus went 0-2-1 and gained its only point in an overtime loss March 19 at Nationwide Arena. The Blue Jackets went 17-5-1 against their northern neighbors from 2017-22 but are 1-4-1 the past two years.

Former CBJ: Tyler Motte has played 22 games for the Red Wings this year, and the wing has two goals on the campaign.

The Columbus Blue Jackets are set to kick off the new year by hosting the Detroit Red Wings at Nationwide Arena. The two teams will face off on January 2nd, marking the beginning of the 2025 season for both clubs.

The Blue Jackets will be looking to start the year on a high note as they aim to build upon their success from the previous season. With a roster filled with talented players, including stars like Alex Ovechkin and Pierre-Luc Dubois, Columbus will be a force to be reckoned with in the upcoming season.

On the other hand, the Red Wings will be looking to turn things around after a disappointing season last year. Detroit has made some key offseason acquisitions and will be looking to make a statement in their first game of the year against their division rivals.

This matchup between the Blue Jackets and Red Wings is sure to be an exciting one, as both teams look to set the tone for the rest of the season. Be sure to tune in and catch all the action as these two teams battle it out on the ice.

    ‘Chad Powers’ Preview Released: WATCH

The first look at “Chad Powers” is here.

The plot of the Hulu series starring Glen Powell – one of Hollywood’s fastest rising men – is described as, “When bad behavior nukes hotshot QB Russ Holliday’s college career, he disguises himself and walks onto a struggling Southern football team as the talented, affable Chad Powers.”

It is inspired by Eli Manning going undercover as a QB at Penn State. It’s still hard for me to believe anyone thought it was real, but apparently, many did.

While the Manning stunt was a bit dumb, the series with Powell actually looks pretty entertaining. Check out the short promo recently released below, and let me know your thoughts at David.Hookstead@outkick.com.

    Hulu releases Chad Powers promo

What do we all think of the promo? I think it looks very solid. Granted, it’s not much to go off of, but it looks genuinely funny.

It has a bit of a “Blue Mountain State” vibe going on. Plus, Powell is a legit A-list talent thanks to his success over the past couple of years.

Now, he’s leading a Hulu series. That’s a huge win for the streaming giant. If he’s even close to being as good as he was in “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Anyone but You,” then “Chad Powers” should be outstanding.

There’s no official release date yet, but Hulu announced that it will come at some point in the fall of 2025. That means we’re not really close, but the wait could easily end up being worth it. Let me know what you think of the concept and preview at David.Hookstead@outkick.com.

  • Georgia vs. Notre Dame: Time, TV channel, preview for the College Football Playoff at the Sugar Bowl

Georgia vs. Notre Dame: Time, TV channel, preview for the College Football Playoff at the Sugar Bowl

Notre Dame's running back Jeremiyah Love
Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love

Two of college football’s blueblood programs face off for a spot in the College Football Playoff semifinals. Georgia received a first-round bye after defeating Texas in the SEC championship on Dec. 7. Notre Dame defeated Indiana 27-17 in the first round to meet the Bulldogs in New Orleans. The Irish were unable to receive a bye as Notre Dame does not compete in a conference and the top four seeds are awarded to the highest-ranking conference champions.

While the Bulldogs escaped with an overtime win in the SEC title game, quarterback Carson Beck injured his throwing arm in the first half of the matchup. Beck will likely not play against Notre Dame, and redshirt sophomore Gunner Stockton will make his first career start against the Irish. Stockton played the entirety of the second half in the conference championship, finishing 12-16 for 71 yards and an interception.

Notre Dame is led by Riley Leonard under center and Jeremiyah Love at running back. Love tallied 108 rushing yards and a touchdown in Notre Dame’s first-round game with the Hoosiers. But the Irish are powered by their elite defense, as Marcus Freeman’s squad only allowed 20 or more points twice all season. One of the game’s biggest storylines is certainly how Stockton performs against one of the nation’s top-ranked secondaries, led by All-America safety Xavier Watts.

Georgia’s defense does not boast the same national rankings as the Irish, but the Bulldogs have playmakers as well, most notably, Butkus Award winner (best linebacker) Jalon Walker. This matchup should be a defensive battle as each squad averages over 1.5 takeaways per game.

Here’s how the two teams stack up:

    Georgia Stat Notre Dame
    11-2 Record 12-1
    31.9 Points Per Game 38.8
    21.8 Points Against 13.8
Nate Frazier (634 yards) Leading Rusher Jeremiyah Love (1,057 yards)
Arian Smith (750 yards) Leading Receiver Beaux Collins (445 yards)
Malaki Starks (73 tackles) Leading Tackler Jack Kisner (69 tackles)

IIHF – World Junior quarter-finals preview

The quarter-finals mark the moment of truth at the 2025 IIHF World Junior Championship. It’s when a team’s tournament can turn into a triumph or a disaster.

It depends on expectations, of course. For up-and-coming hockey nations, just making the final eight is an accomplishment. But for the perennial medal contenders, there is pressure aplenty in this do-or-die situation. In 2009, Ottawa witnessed a major World Junior upset when Slovakia beat the U.S. 5-3 in the quarter-finals. Is more such drama in store?

Let’s take a closer look at our quarter-final matchups on Thursday. All times are local (Eastern Standard Time).

    Sweden-Latvia (12:00)

On paper, it’s impossible not to pick Sweden in this TD Place Arena matchup. The well-structured Juniorkronorna, who won last year’s silver medal, amassed a perfect group-stage record with an impressive 24-10 goal difference. They have the tournament’s best power play (7-for-20, 35 percent) and three of the tournament’s top 10 scorers. The list goes on.

That doesn’t mean coach Magnus Havelid’s boys will take the Latvians lightly, even though the small Baltic nation has never finished higher than seventh at a World Juniors (2022). Latvia’s 3-2 shootout upset over host Canada put everyone on notice.

“Of course, we’re going to be favourites, but still, we need to play our best at all times,” said Swedish captain Axel Sandin Pellikka, who leads the tournament scoring race (4+4=8). “They’re a really good team, so we’d better start preparing as soon as possible.”

The Latvians also managed to stay within one goal of the Americans in their 5-1 loss for more than 25 minutes, and they will look to do the same against the Swedes, trying to engender a sense of doubt. Power forward Eriks Mateiko has been clutch with a team-leading three goals so far.

Latvian captain Peteris Bulans said: “We need to play simple: send bodies to the net and pucks to the net and get the rebounds and deflections, simple hockey in the O-zone.”

However, barring another miraculous performance from Latvian goalie Renards Feldbergs, who has faced a tournament-high 163 shots with a sparkling 96.3 save percentage, the Swedes should find a way to advance.

    USA-Switzerland (14:30)

Could our second quarter-final at the Canadian Tire Centre feature duelling power plays? If so, it’d sure be fun for the fans, if not necessarily U.S. coach David Carle or his Swiss counterpart Marcel Jenni, who want to see good discipline. But the reality is that for Switzerland, scoring on the power play is most likely their only hope of eliminating the defending champions.

Six of Switzerland’s last seven goals have come with the man advantage, including four in the third period of the 7-5 loss to Sweden and two in the critical 3-1 win over Kazakhstan. With that said, the U.S. PP is also heating up at the right time, capitalizing three times to down archrival Canada 4-1 on New Year’s Eve.

Outside of special teams, the Americans have the edge across the board.

Although the top line of James Hagens (2+4=6), Gabe Perreault and captain Ryan Leonard (2+2=4 apiece) hasn’t been as dominant as projected, the U.S. is getting timely secondary scoring from the likes of sniper Cole Eiserman (2+4=6) and Danny Nelson (3+1=4). Number one D-man Zeev Buium has been a minutes monster, averaging 24:53 per game, but the best U.S. player has been Cole Hutson (4+4=8), period. A savvy play-driver, the younger brother of Montreal’s Lane Hutson could surpass Erik Johnson’s 2007 record for most points (10) by a U.S. defender in a World Juniors.

Unless three-time U.S. World Junior goalie Trey Augustine has a shaky outing against the likes of Switzerland’s Leo Braillard (3+0=3), it’s hard to see the Americans going home early.

    Finland-Slovakia (17:00, TD Place Arena)

The Canadians may have done the Finns a huge favour by blanking them 4-0 on Day One. Since that rough welcome to Ottawa, Finland has settled into a good groove with three consecutive wins.

Outshooting the U.S. 44-33 in a 4-3 overtime victory was a statement for coach Lauri Mikkola’s crew. And Petteri Rimpinen – although undrafted – has put himself into the Best Goalie conversation with his 1.74 GAA and 94.7 save percentage, having capped off the preliminary round with a 3-0 shutout against Latvia.

Finland has epitomized a balanced attack in Ottawa, with 16 skaters thus far registering at least one point. Among the forwards, Jesse Kiiskinen has been hot (3+0=3), and Arttu Alasiurua (2+0=2) had a great game against the Americans. To see one-timer king Kasper Halttunen end his drought with a PP blast against Latvia was important. And defensively, the Finns boast the tournament’s best PK (0 goals allowed on 13 disadvantages) and the second-lowest goals against (eight). Can they keep it rolling against Slovakia at TD Place Arena? There’s always room for improvement.

“We have the puck a lot, but we have to get more guys to the front of the net,” said Finland’s Benjamin Rautiainen.

For Slovakia, it’s all about what their veterans can deliver.

Captain and top centre Dalibor Dvorsky, playing his fourth World Juniors at age 19, has excelled on the attack (4+3=7) and on faceoffs (65 percent on 83 draws). This is a one-line team with big Juraj Pekarcik (2+3=5) teaming up nicely with Dvorsky – a fellow St. Louis Blues prospect – and Daniel Jencko (2+2=4).

On defence, assistant captain Maxim Strbak (23:35) is averaging one minute a game more than Dvorsky (22:35) and making an offensive impact (1+4=5). Luka Radivojevic has also performed well, chipping in two assists and averaging 19:03 a game.

That said, unless Slovak starter Samuel Urban (3.28 GAA, 87.5 save percentage) stands on his head and the Finns play uncharacteristically loosey-goosey hockey, Slovakia will likely suffer a quarter-final exit for the tenth consecutive year.

    Canada-Czechia (19:30)

This is the most intriguing of the four matchups, and not just because it features the world’s traditional hockey superpower playing at home.

The Canadians have revenge on their minds. The Czechs eliminated Canada last year with a 3-2 quarter-final win, as Jakub Stancl scored his second goal of the game with just 0:11 left. Meanwhile, the Czechs – who won precisely zero medals from 2006 to 2021 – are hungry to keep their current medal streak alive after taking silver in 2023 versus Canada and bronze last year against the Finns.

What everyone’s wondering is, can coach Dave Cameron’s team find its game in time? Apart from beating Finland 4-0 in their opener, the Canadians have been snake-bitten offensively. In the 4-1 loss to the Americans, they outshot their rivals by a 2-to-1 or 3-to-1 margin at times, but couldn’t score. Worse still was the discipline meltdown by go-to attackers, as team scoring leader Easton Cowan (1+2=3), Luca Pinelli (1+0=1) and Sam Dickinson (0+0=0) accumulated 4 PIM apiece on New Year’s Eve. Wunderkind Gavin McKenna, the projected #1 overall pick for the 2026 NHL Draft, isn’t taking penalties but hasn’t scored since Day One.

Goalie Carter George, though, has been absolutely stellar, recording a 1.01 GAA, and a tournament-best 96.3 save percentage and two shutouts. That’s a saving grace. George needs to keep it up, especially if Canada remains out of sync on Thursday.

Looking forward to taking on the Czechs at the Canadian Tire Centre, McKenna said: “We’re going to have to put pucks in the back of the net. They’re a good team, so we have to be ready.”

Czechia’s winning streak ended in the 4-2 loss to Sweden that decided first place in Group B. But they were competitive in that game, apart from the second-period defensive lapses that cost them dearly. Czech captain Eduard Sale noted that they also need to clean up their discipline after taking 14 PIM against the Swedes: “It’s better to get this wake-up call in the group stage, not about how we play but about penalties, because it was stupid penalties, and we can’t do that.”

Sale joins Stancl and Vojtech Hradec among the Czech forwards who have four goals apiece, while assistant captain Matej Mastalirsky and Petr Sikora each have three goals. It’s heartening for coach Patrik Augusta to get contributions from the back end too, including five assists for Jakub Fibigr and four for Vojtech Port. This is the tournament’s highest-scoring squad so far (25 goals), although the 14-2 blowout against Kazakhstan does inflate the count.

A solid two-way effort is essential against Canada. The host nation has fired a World Junior-leading 173 shots on goal. Assuming that towering goalie Michael Hrabal (2.36 GAA, 92.5 save percentage) will easily ward off 40-plus shots would be foolish. Still, the Czechs can feel good about their game overall, as Sikora affirmed: “I’m confident, and our team is confident too. So we are going to show it.”

Only once before has Canada lost a quarter-final on home ice. In 2019, Finland stunned the hosts 2-1 in Vancouver on Toni Utunen’s overtime goal. This 2025 showdown could go either way, but it’s not hard to imagine the Czechs advancing this year, as they have more momentum.

The IIHF World Junior quarter-finals are upon us, and hockey fans around the world are eagerly anticipating the intense matchups that lie ahead. With only the best teams remaining in the tournament, the quarter-finals promise to be a showcase of skill, determination, and passion for the game.

In the first quarter-final matchup, we have a showdown between two hockey powerhouses as Canada takes on Russia. Both teams have been dominant in the tournament so far, with Canada showcasing their offensive firepower and Russia displaying their defensive prowess. This game is sure to be a fast-paced, physical battle that will keep fans on the edge of their seats until the final buzzer.

In the second quarter-final matchup, the United States will face off against Sweden in what promises to be a tight contest. The Americans have been playing with confidence and determination, while the Swedes have been solid in all aspects of their game. This game could go either way, as both teams are evenly matched and hungry for a spot in the semi-finals.

The third quarter-final matchup will see Finland take on the Czech Republic in what is expected to be a close and hard-fought battle. Both teams have shown flashes of brilliance in the tournament, and will be looking to continue their winning ways in this crucial game. With so much on the line, expect both teams to leave everything on the ice in pursuit of a semi-final berth.

Lastly, Switzerland will face off against Slovakia in the final quarter-final matchup. Both teams have exceeded expectations in the tournament so far, and will be looking to continue their impressive runs with a win in this game. With both teams playing with heart and determination, this matchup is sure to be a thrilling contest that could go down to the wire.

As the IIHF World Junior quarter-finals approach, hockey fans can expect to see some of the best young talent in the world compete at the highest level. With so much at stake, each game promises to be a thrilling and intense battle that will showcase the passion and skill of these young athletes. Stay tuned for what is sure to be an exciting and memorable round of quarter-final matchups.

  • U.S. Bancorp Earnings Preview: What to Expect

U.S. Bancorp (USB), founded in 1863 and headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota, is one of the largest financial institutions in the U.S. With a market cap of $74.6 billion, USB offers various financial services, including consumer and commercial banking, wealth management, payment services, and investment banking. The company is scheduled to release its Q4 earnings before the market opens on Thursday, Jan. 16.

Ahead of this event, analysts expect the bank to report a profit of $1.06 per share, up 7.1% from $0.99 per share in the year-ago quarter. The company has beaten or matched Wall Street’s bottom-line estimates in the past four quarters.

The company reported an EPS of $1.03 in the most recent quarter, surpassing the consensus EPS estimate by 3%. U.S. Bancorp’s Q3 performance was driven by higher net interest income and disciplined expense management despite securities losses and lower noninterest income.

USB stock has underperformed compared to the S&P 500 Index’s ($SPX) impressive 23.3% gains over the past 52 weeks, with its shares rising only 10.5% during this period. U.S. Bancorp’s recent performance dip paints a vivid picture of the challenges posed by a shifting economic landscape. Higher interest rates reshaped the deposit mix and pricing dynamics, slicing into other revenues. Meanwhile, a net loss from the sale of securities and reduced service charges added to the strain, spotlighting the headwinds the bank faces in navigating this complex environment.

However, on Nov. 25, U.S. Bancorp gained over 2% after Citigroup upgraded the stock from “Neutral” to “Buy”, citing a $65 price target. Earlier, on Oct. 16, USB stock rallied over 4% after the company reported its Q3 earnings. The total quarterly revenues amounted to $6.86 billion, down 2.4% year over year, with non-interest income at $2.7 billion, also down 2.4% from the previous year.

Analysts’ consensus view on USB stock is “Moderate Buy.” Out of 22 analysts covering the stock, eight advise a “Strong Buy,” two indicate a “Moderate Buy,” and 12 suggest a “Hold” rating.

The average analyst price target for USB is $56.59, indicating a potential upside of 18.3% from the current levels.

U.S. Bancorp, one of the largest banks in the United States, is set to release its quarterly earnings report soon. Investors and analysts are eagerly anticipating the results to gauge the bank’s financial health and performance.

Here’s what to expect from U.S. Bancorp’s upcoming earnings report:

    1. Strong Revenue Growth: U.S. Bancorp is expected to report solid revenue growth, driven by higher interest income and fee-based revenue. The bank has a strong presence in consumer banking, commercial banking, and wealth management, which should contribute to overall revenue growth.

    2. Net Interest Margin: Investors will be closely watching U.S. Bancorp’s net interest margin, a key metric that measures the difference between the interest income generated by the bank and the amount of interest paid out to depositors. With the Federal Reserve raising interest rates, U.S. Bancorp could see an improvement in its net interest margin.

    3. Loan Growth: Analysts will be looking for signs of loan growth in U.S. Bancorp’s earnings report. A healthy increase in loan originations and a strong loan portfolio could indicate a positive outlook for the bank’s future earnings.

    4. Credit Quality: Another important factor to consider is U.S. Bancorp’s credit quality. Investors will want to see low levels of non-performing loans and a healthy loan loss reserve to protect against potential credit losses.

Overall, analysts are optimistic about U.S. Bancorp’s earnings report and expect the bank to deliver solid financial results. Stay tuned for the official earnings release to see how U.S. Bancorp performed in the latest quarter.
