12/29 Preview – Byfield’s Play Right on Q + No Skate Today, Back-To-Backs, WJC Update

WHO: Los Angeles Kings (20-10-5) vs. Philadelphia Flyers (16-16-4)
    WHAT: 2024-25 Regular-Season Game
WHEN: Sunday, December 29 @ 6:00 PM Pacific
WHERE: Crypto.com Arena – Los Angeles, CA
HOW TO FOLLOW: VIDEO: Fan Duel Sports Network – AUDIO – ESPN LA App – TWITTER: @dooleylak & @lakings

TODAY’S MATCHUP: The Kings conclude a back-to-back set this evening against Philadelphia, as they take on the Flyers for the second time in 11 days.

HEAD-TO-HEAD: Forwards Anze Kopitar and Kevin Fiala led the way for the Kings with two goals apiece when these teams met in Philadelphia earlier this month.

12 Kings had a point in that game and six had multi-point evenings, with forward Warren Foegele collecting a goal and an assist, while Alex Laferriere, Vladislav Gavrikov and Jordan Spence each tallied two helpers in the victory.

KINGS VITALS: With the back-to-back, the Kings did not hold a morning skate today.

With goaltender Darcy Kuemper playing yesterday against Edmonton, expect goaltender David Rittich to get the start this evening versus the Flyers. Rittich brings a lifetime record of 5-0-0 against Philadelphia, with a .932 save percentage and a 1.95 goals-against average.

For reference, here’s how the Kings lined up during yesterday’s practice –

The Kings went 11/7 yesterday against the Oilers and it wouldn’t be surprising to see the same alignment today. If they look to make a change, I’d expect it to be in the form of forward Andre Lee coming in up front to give the Kings 12 forwards.

Forward Arthur Kaliyev and defenseman Andreas Englund are also available, if the Kings sought further changes, but Lee feels like the option if the Kings do opt for a change.

FLYERS VITALS: Similar to the Kings, the Flyers are also completing a back-to-back, having defeated the Anaheim Ducks yesterday at Honda Center.

Per Jackie Spiegel of the Philadelphia Inquirer, here’s how the Flyers lined up yesterday in Anaheim –

Flyers forward Tyson Foerster had a hand in all three Flyers goals against the Kings when these teams met earlier this month, scoring twice and adding an assist, along with a +3 rating. In total, Foerster has six points (3-3-6) over his last five games played.

Storyline Of The Day – Right On Q
Quinton Byfield talked about the win over the Rangers earlier this month as a turning point for him.

Including that game, Byfield has five goals and seven points over his last six games, bolstered by a two-goal performance in yesterday’s win over Edmonton, including the overtime game-winning goal. In adding an assist, it was Byfield first three-point game of the season and his first since February 10, also coming against Edmonton here in Los Angeles.

“Probably since the Rangers game, when I put one by Shesterkin, it just feels like I can beat goalies again,” Byfield said.

Including that game, no player in the NHL has scored more even-strength goals than Byfield.

If you look at his goals in that span, you’d see that four of the five were shots that beat goaltenders clean, starting with the goal he mentioned against New York. A week later in Nashville, Byfield hammered a shot from the slot off the post and in and beat Edmonton’s Stuart Skinner twice last night with his shot. The overtime game winner was particularly impressive and I’m not sure it’s a shot he even takes earlier this season.

There it is. He made an assertive move onto his forehand, working his way into some space in the slot. Sometimes, it’s just shooter against goaltender. Byfield trusted his shot, picked his spot on the glove side and beat Skinner clean with a shot for his first career overtime game winner. It’s a play he admitted he probably wouldn’t have shot on even 15 games ago.

“I’m just kind of finding it back again, I’m confident with the puck, taking guys on 1-on-1, using my speed,” he said. “I kind of just came back to that and it’s started working.”

It’s looking like the Byfield was saw during training camp this fall. The Byfield who appeared set to take the step from breakout play to star player. He was the best player on the team during preseason games but the production didn’t quite translate into the regular season. By his own admission, Byfield felt very confident heading into the season but when he had a few games that weren’t his best, it was hard to bring himself back up.

As Jim Hiller detailed, every player has those ups and downs, but sometimes it takes a veteran to not get wrapped up in it. Something that will come for Byfield. Right now it’s a high, with Hiller calling Byfield the team’s best player in Washington before the break, which followed a really strong showing against Nashville the game before. Now it’s three in a row. It’s not going to be 50 in a row, though, so at some point, Byfield’s level will drop off a bit and he’ll have to find his way back to level. As he gets more and more experience with the ups and downs of the NHL, those stretches should become smaller and smaller, as they are for Anze Kopitar and as they’ve become, with time, for Adrian Kempe.

If Byfield can continue to find that level, it just unlocks another level for the Kings as a team. Honestly, it’s essential to that being possible. The Kings need to be a team with three lines playing at a Top-6 level. With the way Byfield’s line has come together with Warren Foegele and Tanner Jeannot, you can see that possibility. Same goes for Phillip Danault between Kevin Fiala and Alex Laferriere. When there are three lines playing at that level, the Kings can exploit matchups the way they did yesterday. Neither Connor McDavid or Leon Draisaitl were on the ice for a goal against. They can’t play the entire game. Byfield’s line exploited the matchup they had and, when things are clicking, that’s a recipe for Kings success.

While Philadelphia is a different challenge, built more like the Kings without the star power but with a lot of younger players throughout their lineup, it’s the same focus for Byfield. Keep it up at that level and the production will continue to be there.

    3 To Watch For –
    – Double back-to-back today.

Both teams played yesterday afternoon, with the Kings winning at home and the Flyers defeating the Ducks on the road. With matching 1 PM puck drops, no real advantage there, with both teams having the chance to get a full night of sleep without much travel between Anaheim and Los Angeles.

Thus far this season, the Kings have been one of the NHL’s most successful teams on the second half of back-to-backs, at 4-1-0, while the Flyers have been one of the least at 1-5-0. Only Boston has collected more points on a per-game basis this season than the Kings in these situations, with another good opportunity tonight to add to that total.

    – Today’s game is Game 2 of 5 on this current five-game homestand. It’s not technically the longest homestand of the season, but the six-game homestand in February is broken up by a two-week break for the 4 Nations Faceofff. So, this feels like the longest one the Kings have.

The Kings are 11-2-1 at home this season, good for a .821 winning percentage that trails only Vegas in the league standings. Great to have these games at home and, if the Kings can take advantage, an opportunity to bank points.

“It’s an advantage if you win them,” Hiller said. “Historically, most teams’ home records are better than their road records. We’ve played particularly well in our building, in front of our fans, so I’m happy that we have the least amount of home games thus far. We’ll make them up, but we’ve got to play well and win them.”

The Kings have played just the 14 times at home, fewest in the NHL to date. A good opportunity, despite difficult competition upcoming, to make the most of an extended stretch at home.

    – Lastly, a quick World Juniors update.

Goaltender Carter George posted a 31-save shutout in his World Juniors Championships debut with Team Canada, a 4-0 victory over Finland in the opening game of the tournament. The 31 saves in total included 20 during a third period in which Finland surged. Big-game player, with the “it factor” is how George has been described by evaluators both inside and outside the organization.

Hampton Slukynsky won his tournament debut for the United States, a 5-1 win over Latvia. Slukynsky made 25 saves on 26 shots, denying the Latvian’s their second consecutive upset victory.

Add onto the goaltending a first goal of the tournament for Kings defensive prospect Jakub Dvorak for Team Czechia, which improved to 2-0 thus far, and you’ve got quite the start. Dvorak is +4 from wins over Switzerland and Kazakhstan.

Good start on all three fronts.

For the big club, Kings and Flyers, final game of 2024!

Hey hockey fans! As we gear up for the game on December 29th, all eyes are on Quinton Byfield’s impressive play as of late. The young forward has been lighting it up on the ice, showcasing his skill and determination in every shift. • Western Kentucky at Michigan Wolverines College Basketball Preview

Western Kentucky at Michigan Wolverines College Basketball Preview

The Michigan Wolverines needed to get back in the win column after two narrow neutral-site losses and did so in a big way against Purdue Fort Wayne. Though the Wolverines were big favorites, a 31-point win over a top-150 KenPom team is not insignificant, and now they get a chance to put on an encore performance against the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers to close out the non-conference schedule.

Like the Mastodons, WKU is a quality mid-major team, sitting 110th in KenPom. Michigan will be expected to roll in Ann Arbor again, but this is a good chance to end 2024 on a positive and keep growing ahead of a two-game stint in Los Angeles to start the new year. The Wolverines have infamously stumbled for three years in a row immediately following Christmas, so a win Sunday would show this program is different.

Western Kentucky Hilltoppers (9-3) vs. Michigan Wolverines (9-3)

    Date & Time: Sunday, Dec. 29, 8 p.m. ET
Location: Crisler Center, Ann Arbor, MI
    TV/Streaming: BTN

The Hilltoppers started 0-2 but have since won nine of the last 10, with their lone loss coming at Kentucky. None of those nine wins are overly impressive, with no other games featuring Power Five competition. Still, this is solid team that is coming off a Conference USA tournament championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance; Steve Lutz used that success to earn the Oklahoma State head coaching job, leaving assistant Hank Plona to take over.

The last meeting between these two teams was in the Fifth Place Game of the 2007 Great Alaska Shootout. That was a rough season for the Wolverines in John Beilein’s inaugural campaign, but it was one of WKU’s best ever with a magical run to the Sweet Sixteen. Obviously not a lot of relevance from a meeting 17 years ago, but hey, there is some history at least!

One Big Question: Has the mentality changed?

Last weekend’s win over PFW was everything Dusty May wanted to see: highly efficient offense (1.27 PPP), shutdown defense (0.83 PPP), and no relapse after getting out to a big lead. That last point is key after all of the slumps the Wolverines have endured during games this season and certainly was a possibility in a late-December buy game following some bitter defeats. The risk remains on Sunday in the dreaded contest between holidays.

WKU is not particularly strong offensively but does have one of the country’s fastest tempos. The Hilltoppers are prone to steals and do not do well in the paint (both making buckets and offensive rebounding), so as long as the defense can prevent easy looks in transition this should be another manageable opponent; any breakdowns will likely be effort and focus-based.

One Thing to Watch: Bring it

Nearly everything was working for Michigan last weekend, but I love how it was the fourth straight time with two-point shooting over 50 percent. Feasting in the paint is clearly the team’s strength, and I want to see the bigs challenge a Hilltoppers’ group that is top-50 nationally in interior defense. Much of this has to be competition driven, and it is difficult to see the visitors matching up to the Wolverines’ size, but May’s squad is still in habit-forming mode.

Big Ten play is notoriously physical, and Michigan’s identity will need to be centered around Danny Wolf and Vlad Goldin. The two have blossomed into a beautifully lethal combo, and these are the types of games they can really take over. The goal in this one is simply to wrap up the non-conference slate without a major blemish, but there is no reason why this cannot be an exclamation point as the calendar turns to 2025.

The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers are set to face off against the Michigan Wolverines in an exciting college basketball matchup. Both teams are coming off of strong performances and will be looking to continue their winning streaks.

The Hilltoppers have been led by standout guard Charles Bassey, who is averaging a double-double this season with impressive numbers on both ends of the court. Western Kentucky will need Bassey to continue his dominant play if they hope to pull off an upset against the Wolverines.

On the other side, the Wolverines have been led by a balanced scoring attack, with multiple players averaging double figures in points. Michigan will look to continue their strong team play and solid defense to secure a victory at home.

This matchup promises to be an exciting one, with both teams bringing their A-game to the court. Fans can expect a fast-paced and competitive game as these two talented teams battle it out for the win. Be sure to tune in and catch all the action as Western Kentucky takes on Michigan in what is sure to be a thrilling college basketball showdown.

Michigan basketball vs. Western Kentucky: Preview and updates

Michigan basketball closes the 2024 calendar year by hosting Western Kentucky on Sunday night at the Crisler Center. Tip-off against the Hilltoppers is scheduled for 8 p.m., and the game will air on Big Ten Network.

The Wolverines are 9-3, and 2-0 in the Big Ten, and WKU represents the final non-conference game of the regular season. The Tops have an identical record and a top-125 ranking on KenPom, but their wins to date haven’t been spectacular; their victories feature opponents such as Kentucky Wesleyan and Campbellsville. Against the upper echelons of the sport, Western Kentucky has suffered narrow losses to Wichita State and Grand Canyon, and a 19-point road defeat to Kentucky.

WKU is led by guard Don McHenry, who has scored 28 or more points in three straight games. The Wisconsin native is a senior whose career has featured stops at Hawaii Hilo and Indian Hill Community College before transferring to the Tops ahead of the 2023-24 campaign. That up transfer was an immediate hit, as McHenry was the team’s leading scorer (15.1 points per game) last year and finished as the fourth-leading scorer in CUSA while charting the third-best field goal percentage in the conference. Appropriately, he does command high usage (28.5%, per KenPom) and is very efficient at the free throw line (84.8%).

McHenry paces an offense that plays fast (11th in adjusted tempo, per KenPom) and rarely turns the ball over. But, like many of Michigan’s opponents in non-conference, WKU is among the shorter teams in the nation, with a starting five featuring a 6-foot-8 center and a 6-foot-7 power forward. As a result, WKU doesn’t hit the offensive glass and was thoroughly out rebounded by Kentucky in that matchup.

Michigan will hope to avoid a late-December letdown that has recurred in recent years: A 2023 loss to McNeese St., a 2022 loss to Central Michigan and 2021 loss to Central Florida were harbingers of disappointing seasons.

KenPom predicts a 16-point win for the Wolverines and gives them a 92% chance of taking care of business against Western Kentucky on Sunday night at Crisler.

Michigan vs. Western Kentucky: Game notes

    Via the two programs:

    – The Tops’ current six-game winning streak dates back over a month, with the team’s only other loss coming at the hands of No. 8 Kentucky on the road in Lexington on Nov. 26.

    – WKU touts the top-scoring offense in CUSA with an average of 82.0 points per game, good for 54th in the nation. The Tops rank sixth in the nation for defensive rebounding with 30.17 per game. They’re also 37th in the nation in FG% defense, limiting opponents to 39.1% shooting from the field.

    – U-M’s battle with Western Kentucky is the finale of a quintuple of Sunday games on the Big Ten Network. After five men’s games, the Sunday slate of games will end with a Maize & Blue doubleheader as Kim Barnes Arico’s 23rd-ranked Wolverines take on fourth-ranked USC and JuJu Watkins at 7 p.m. PST (10 p.m. EST) from the Galen Center.

    – Michigan and Western Kentucky are playing for the first time in 17 years. U-M is 3-2 all-time, but the Wolverines have lost the last two.

Michigan basketball is set to face off against Western Kentucky in a non-conference matchup on Thursday night. The Wolverines are coming off a dominant win over Prairie View A&M, while the Hilltoppers are looking to bounce back from a tough loss to Louisville.

Michigan will be looking to continue their strong start to the season, led by standout freshman forward Caleb Houstan and veteran guard DeVante’ Jones. The Wolverines’ defense has been a key factor in their early success, holding opponents to just 61.2 points per game.

Western Kentucky, on the other hand, will be looking to regroup after a tough loss to Louisville. The Hilltoppers are led by senior guard Taveion Hollingsworth, who is averaging 18.3 points per game. They will need a strong performance from their supporting cast to pull off an upset against Michigan.

This matchup promises to be an exciting one, with both teams looking to make a statement early in the season. Stay tuned for updates and analysis on Thursday night’s game between Michigan and Western Kentucky.

    Opening Tip

    • TCU and Brown are meeting for the second time on the hardwood. The Horned Frogs and Bears first crossed paths on Jan. 1, 2001, with TCU claiming an 80-42 home decision. The 2000-01 campaign was notable in that TCU earned its first of nine NCAA Tournament berths that season.
    • TCU is within three victories inside Schollmaier Arena of matching its longest home winning streak in program history (15 games) dating back to its 59-49 takedown of Houston on Feb. 24.
    • TCU’s average margin of victory at home is 40 points.
    • TCU has drained 12-or-more three-pointers in six of its nine home wins.
    • TCU is averaging 23.5 assists per game inside Schollmaier Arena.
    • TCU has been the highest ranked Big 12 team in the AP Top 25 for four straight weeks.
    • The Frogs’ No. 11 AP Top 25 ranking is the second-highest in program history.

    Frog Focus

    • TCU sports the No. 8 NCAA NET ranking ahead of Sunday’s matchup.
    • The Horned Frogs have drilled the third-most 3-pointers (137) of any D1 program.
    • TCU is the only team in the country to hit 15-plus three-pointers on three occasions thus far in 2024-25. The Horned Frogs also lead the country in games with at least a dozen 3-pointers (seven).
    • The Horned Frogs have knocked down 12-or-more 3-pointers 16 times in the last two seasons.
    • TCU is one of three teams ranking in the top five in the country in assist-to-turnover ratio (3rd, 1.90) and assists per game (4th, 21.4).
    • TCU ranks second nationally in games with at least 20 assists (nine).
    • The Horned Frogs average 7.1 blocks per game – a mark that ranks fourth nationally and tops the Big 12 – and rejected seven-plus shots for the ninth time this season at UCF.
    • TCU has held teams to less than 20 points in a half on eight occasions this season, including seven of its nine home victories.
    • The Horned Frogs rank 11th nationally in scoring margin (31.8).
    • Hailey Van Lith, Sedona Prince and Madison Conner are the nation’s second-highest scoring trio, averaging 53.6 points per game. They combined for 60 points in TCU’s 92-52 win at UCF on Dec. 21.
    • Van Lith, Prince and Conner make TCU the lone Big 12 team with three top 15 scorers .
    • Conner became the third Horned Frog to be named Ann Meyers Drysdale National Player of the Week on Tuesday. TCU is now the only team in the nation with multiple players who have earned National Player of the Week honors, as Prince and Van Lith received the recognition on Dec. 3.
    • Conner was tabbed Big 12 Player of the Week for the second time in her career on Monday. She averaged an NCAA-leading 28.5 points per game and shot 13-26 from distance vs. Samford and UCF.
    • Conner leads the country in 3-pointers (53) and 3-pointers per game (4.1).
    • Conner averages 4.4 three-pointers per game at home. She has connected five-plus times from downtown in nine of her 25 outings inside Schollmaier Arena.
    • Conner leads the nation in games with at least five 3-pointers over the last two seasons with 12.
    • Van Lith is the only player in the country ranking in the top-10 in assists (5th, 84), assist-to-turnover ratio (9th, 3.2) and assists per game (9th, 6.5).
    • Van Lith has finished with an assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.5 or better seven times this season. She tallied 15 assists in the Frogs’ wins vs. Samford and UCF last week.

    • Aaliyah Roberson is fourth out of all Big 12 forwards in effective field goal percentage (.677). The figure ranks 14th nationally among players at her position averaging at least 15 minutes per game.

A Win Over the Bears Would…

    • Mark the second straight season the Horned Frogs have run the table in nonconference play at home.
    • Extend TCU’s home winning streak to 13 games dating back to its 59-49 victory against Houston on Feb. 24.
    • Lift the Horned Frogs to their 23rd consecutive home nonconference win.
    • Enhance Mark Campbell‘s career record inside Schollmaier Arena to 26-4.
    • Make Campbell 25-1 in nonconference affairs in his TCU tenure.
    • Make TCU 12-1 in the month of December in the Campbell era.
    • Improve TCU’s record in games played following a break of six days or more to 8-0 over the last two seasons.
    • Go down as the Frogs’ 114th win inside Schollmaier Arena since the venue reopened in 2015.
    • Augment TCU’s record as a ranked team to 12-3 under Campbell.

    Series Notes: Brown

    • Sunday’s contest marks the second time the Horned Frogs will stage their nonconference finale vs. the Bears. TCU’s victory against Brown in 2000-01 was the program’s final nonconference game in its last season as a member of the Western Athletic Conference. TCU embarked on a four-year run as a Conference USA affiliate the following season.
    • TCU senior Janice Thomas led all players with 15 points and six rebounds in the Frogs’ 80-42 win over the Bears in 2001.
    • The Frogs had eleven players enter the scoring column vs. Brown in the teams’ first and only meeting.
    • TCU bolted out to an 11-0 lead on the way to its 38-point win against Brown to ring in the New Year in 2001.
    • Sunday’s game signifies TCU’s ninth matchup with an Ivy League foe. TCU is 6-2 in the all-time series, with its most recent encounter with the conference occuring on Nov. 10, 2019, in a 59-49 home triumph over Cornell.
    • The impending matchup also represents just the third time TCU and Brown have faced off in any sport. TCU women’s tennis downed the Bears, 7-0, on March 3, 2018, in the schools’ most recent athletic affair.

Exciting things are happening in the world of Brown and TCU athletics! Stay tuned for a sneak peek of what’s to come for these two powerhouse programs. #BrownTCU #AthleticsPreview

Chicago Blackhawks vs. Dallas Stars NHL December 29, 2024: Preview, how to watch, lineups

For the final time this calendar year, the Blackhawks will skate on United Center ice when they host the Dallas Stars for the fourth and final time this season on Sunday night.

Let’s start with the Blackhawks for a change, since the Stars are more of a known commodity than most Chicago opponents and there is some news involving the home side this afternoon. That news is the return of Wyatt Kaiser from the Rockford IceHogs, with Kevin Korchinski heading the other way up I-90.

Blackhawks send Kevin Korchinski back to Rockford, recall Wyatt Kaiser.

    — Mark Lazerus (@marklazerus.bsky.social) December 29, 2024 at 10:00 AM

Having Kaiser back in Chicago is a good thing: he’s shown flashes of being an NHL-level defenseman and is only 22 years old, so more reps are a good thing for him. The bad thing is that it comes at Korchinski’s expense. With Alec Martinez on the practice ice for Sunday’s morning skate, it does seem that he’s nearing a return, which would give Chicago eight active defensemen: Kaiser, Murphy, Jones, Brodie, Vlasic, Allan, Crevier and the aforementioned Martinez. From this vantage point, it’s real, real difficult to argue against Korchinski not being among the best six of that group, plus he is absolutely expected to be part of the long-term picture here, so it’s extremely annoying to see him headed back to the AHL when it seemed like all reviews of his play were largely positive and there’s no better place for him to continue developing than at the NHL level in Chicago. A counter argument could be that having Korchinski play 20-plus minutes a night in Rockford would be better than the 16:46 he was averaging in nine games with the Hawks, but that’s something which could be remedied by simply playing Korch more.

Anyway, Kaiser won’t suit up just yet after playing a pair of games already this weekend and Martinez isn’t quite ready to return, so Louis Crevier is in the lineup for this game.

Crevier in tonight and Soderblom will start in net for the Blackhawks.

Kaiser is here, but he’s coming off a back to back in Rockford, so he won’t play tonight.

    — Tracey Myers (@traceymyers.bsky.social) December 29, 2024 at 10:42 AM

Here are the expected forward lines and D pairings:

The last time these two teams met, it was a thorough 6-2 beatdown of the Stars at 1901 W. Madison on Thanksgiving Eve, with Taylor Hall providing a hat trick to pace the Chicago offense. Dallas has been closer to average then good in the 13 games since, with a 7-5-1 record in that span that has sent the Stars sliding a bit down the Central Division standings into fourth place with 41 points on the season. Injuries have piled up a bit lately, with Tyler Seguin undergoing a hip surgery that probably ends his season, Matthew Dumba heading to IR before Christmas and Mason Marchment now being sidelined after taking a puck to the face in Dallas’ last game on Thursday: a 3-2 loss to the Minnesota Wild.

There’s not a ton offensive thrust here and those injuries don’t help. The Stars leading scorer is Matt Duchene 30 points (17 G, 13 A) in 34 games and the now-injured Marchment was second with 27 (12 G, 15 A) in 33. Four other active Dallas players are over the 20-point mark with the fifth being the sidelined Seguin. What Dallas does have is an excellent blue line featuring Miro Heiskanen, who remains one of the game’s best. Behind them, the goalie tandem of strong starter Jake Oettinger and competent backup Casey DeSmith have all combined for a defense that’s fourth in the league at just 2.59 goals against per game. The Stars also boast the No. 4 penalty kill in the league at 85.1 percent. But all of that comes with a reminder that same defense gave up six goals to a Blackhawks side that couldn’t score on anyone, resulting in the coach getting fired not long after that offensive outburst. So there’s really no telling what could happen in this game.

    Let’s go Hawks.

    Blackhawks — Statistic — Stars
    45.16% (31st) — 5-on-5 Corsi For — 52.71% (7th)
    45.24% (30th) — 5-on-5 Expected goals for — 52.64% (7th)
    2.56 (29th) — Goals per game — 3.12 (12th)
    3.28 (25th) — Goals against per game — 2.59 (4th)
    43.7% (31st) — Faceoffs — 51.4% (12th)

  • Preview: Senators at Wild, December 29, 2024

Preview: Senators at Wild, December 29, 2024

Last night, the Senators fell to the Winnipeg Jets by a score of 4-2. Forwards Tim Stützle and Ridly Greig both scored for the Senators, but the team was unable to make a comeback after the Jets scored four straight for the win.

Facing off against the Senators are the Minnesota Wild, who have won their past two games. Most recently, the Wild defeated the Dallas Stars by a score of 3-2 in overtime on Friday.

Last season, the Senators split their two-game season series with the Wild 1-1, which included a 2-1 shootout win in Stockholm, Sweden on November 18, 2023, as part of the NHL’s Global Series.

The Senators did not skate this morning, but all signs point toward goaltender Leevi Meriläinen getting the start in net tonight. Both Linus Ullmark and Anton Forsberg remain unavailable to the team, while Mads Sogaard started last night.

Tonight promises for a good game, as the Senators hunt to get back in the win column while the Wild seek their third-straight victory.

    Pregame availabilities:

The Ottawa Senators will be facing off against the Minnesota Wild on December 29, 2024, in what is sure to be an exciting matchup. Both teams have been performing well this season, with the Senators looking to continue their winning streak and the Wild hoping to secure a crucial victory at home.

Key players to watch for the Senators include dynamic forwards like Brady Tkachuk and Tim Stutzle, who have been leading the team in scoring. Meanwhile, the Wild will be relying on veteran defenseman Jared Spurgeon and talented winger Kirill Kaprizov to make an impact on the game.

Both teams have been strong defensively, so expect a tight defensive battle with plenty of scoring opportunities. It will be interesting to see how these two teams match up and which one will come out on top in this highly-anticipated game.

Be sure to tune in on December 29th to see all the action unfold as the Senators take on the Wild in what promises to be a thrilling game.

  • Game Preview: New York Islanders @ Pittsburgh Penguins 12/29/2024

Game Preview: New York Islanders @ Pittsburgh Penguins 12/29/2024

Who: New York Islanders (14-15-7, 35 points, 7th place Metropolitan Division) @ Pittsburgh Penguins (16-16-5, 37 points, 4th place Metropolitan Division)

    When: 5:30 p.m. ET

How to Watch: Broadcast on SportsNet Pittsburgh and MSG Sportsnet for the local markets, streaming on ESPN+

Pens’ Path Ahead: The Pens head to Detroit on New Years Eve (lucky them..) and then get a few days off before the next part of their road swing that sends them to Florida on Friday Jan. 3 and then Carolina a week from today (which will be Jan. 5)

Opponent Track: After wrapping up the home-and-home with the Pens tonight, the Islanders get another home-and-home next week with Toronto. That begins up in Canada on Tuesday before returning back to the Island next Thursday.

Season Series: The Pens lost 4-3 to the Islanders on Nov. 5 in the first matchup. The second game was last night, a 6-3 decision to NYI. The final matchup after tonight will be March 18th in Pittsburgh.

    Getting to know the Islanders

    Projected lines

    FORWARDS

Anders Lee – Mathew Barzal – Jean-Gabriel Pageau

Anthony Duclair – Brock Nelson – Kyle Palmieri

Maxim Tsyplakov – Bo Horvat – Simon Holmstrom

Kyle MacLean – Casey Cizikas – Hudson Fasching

    DEFENSEMEN

    Alexander Romanov / Noah Dobson

    Adam Pelech / Ryan Pulock

    Isaiah George / Scott Mayfield

    Goalies: Ilya Sorokin, Marcus Hoberg

Potential Scratches: Matt Martin, Pierre Engvall, Dennis Cholowski

    IR: Mike Reilly, Semyon Varlamov

—It’ll be interesting to see coming off the break if the Isles lay a heavy workload on Sorokin. Sorokin only saw 25 shots last night, and his backup is the organization’s third string. Usually goalies don’t play back-to-back, but if ever their was a situation and circumstance to break that tradition, this might just be it.

    Player stats

    (via hockeydb)

—No heavy scorers, no great goaltending, it’s no wonder that the temperature is rising on the status of the coach (and even GM) with a last place team under-performing playoff expectations in the first half of the season so far.

—That said, there’s time to turn it around but the clock is ticking. A win today would make three victories in the last four for NYI and then they could start feeling pretty confident that they’re in the process of turning a corner and entering an upswing for their season. They need one to start just about ASAP if they want to get anywhere.

    And now for the Pens

    Projected lines

    FORWARDS

Rickard Rakell – Sidney Crosby – Bryan Rust

Michael Bunting – Evgeni Malkin – Drew O’Connor

Anthony Beauvillier – Cody Glass – Philip Tomasino

Matt Nieto – Blake Lizotte – Noel Acciari

    DEFENSEMEN

    P.O. Joseph / Kris Letang

    Matt Grzelcyk / Erik Karlsson

    Ryan Graves / Ryan Shea

Goalies: Alex Nedeljkovic (Tristan Jarry played yesterday)

Potential Scratches: Jesse Puljujarvi, Kevin Hayes, Nathan Clurman

    IR: Marcus Pettersson, Owen Pickering

—As is recently the case, it seems like the goaltending situation as at another crossroads for the Pens. Nedeljkovic has only started two of the team’s 11 games played in December so far. He’s been relegated to the bench for Jarry to take the ball and try and run with it, but the b-2-b should mean the recently rare opportunity for Nedeljkovic to get back in there.

The New York Islanders are set to take on the Pittsburgh Penguins in an exciting match-up on December 29, 2024. Both teams are currently in the midst of a competitive season and are looking to secure a crucial win.

The Islanders, led by their captain Mathew Barzal, have been performing well this season with a strong defensive lineup and a potent offense. They will be looking to capitalize on their recent success and continue their winning streak against the Penguins.

On the other hand, the Penguins, led by Sidney Crosby, are known for their high-powered offense and skilled players. They will be looking to defend their home ice and come out on top against the Islanders.

This game is sure to be a thrilling and intense battle between two talented teams. Both sides will be giving it their all to secure a victory and gain momentum in the standings.

Be sure to tune in to see which team comes out on top in this exciting match-up between the New York Islanders and the Pittsburgh Penguins on December 29, 2024. It’s bound to be a game you won’t want to miss!

Game 36: Montreal Canadiens @ Tampa Bay Lightning

Start time: **5:00 PM EST / 2:00 PM PST**
In Canada: TSN2 (English), RDS (French)
In the Panthers region: FanDuel Sports Network Sun
    Streaming: ESPN+, RDS, TSN+

Yesterday’s win over the Florida Panthers was merely a bonus for the Canadiens. They’ll gladly take the two points and celebrate Jakub Dobes’s first NHL victory and shutout, but today’s game was always the focus. If the Canadiens want to make an improbable playoff push, a match at Amalie Arena versus the Tampa Bay Lightning is as important a game as a team can have in the first half of the NHL season. The gap from Montreal to a Lightning team sitting in the first wild-card spot is currently nine points. If that extends to 11, it will be extremely difficult for the Habs to make that up, leaving one path to a post-season berth as the final qualifier. If it’s reduced to seven, that’s achievable over the final 46 games.

The Lightning were expected to fall off this season, continuing a gradual downward trend since making it to the Stanley Cup Final for a third straight season in 2021-22. An aging roster had lost in the first round of the playoffs the previous two seasons. Last season, they were outscored 190-171 at five-on-five, relying on the league’s best power play (28.8%) and Steven Stamkos’s 19 goals n the man advantage to earn a post-season place. Despite a very public breakup between Stamkos and the Lightning this summer, Tampa Bay still has a top-three power play, and they are currently outscoring opponents 83-58 at full strength.

    Canadiens Statistics Lightning
    15-17-3 Record 19-11-2
    47.4% (28th) Scoring-chances-for % 51.9% (10th)
    2.97 (19th) Goals per game 4.00 (1st)
    3.49 (28th) Goals against per game 2.76 (7th)
    21.8% (15th) PP% 27.7% (3rd)
    82.1% (9th) PK% 81.1% (13th)
    0-3-1 Head-to-Head Record 4-0-0

Jake Guentzel, the player brought in in free agency to replace Stamkos, has eight goals on the power play through 33 contests. More importantly, he has a five-on-five expected-goals share of 50.2%; Stamkos dropped down to 48.0% last year in that category in a four-year downward trend, which has since extended to five in Nashville where his mark is 44.6%. It seems general manager Julien BriseBois correctly identified the decline of his longtime captain, and has a better team in 2024-25 as a result.

The club has also seen the next stage in Anthony Cirelli’s progression. He has impressed enough to be a top-five vote-getter for the Selke Trophy twice in his career and annually receives at least one nod. This year his offence has reached a new level as he ranks as a point-per-game player, just 13 points off his career high of 45 points set last season. He will likely return to the top five in Selke voting again this year, and perhaps walk away with the award for the first time.

Tampa Bay is also seeing a bounceback from goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy. His .914 mark isn’t quite in the ,920 range it was in his early 20s, but it’s a significant improvement after he just pulled his percentage up to .900 to end last season. Tested with 721 shots so far this year, that upward tick in his performance means 10 more goals saved so far compared to what he would have stopped last season, a critical difference for a team in a wild-card chase.

Montreal hopes Samuel Montembeault can go save-for-save with the 2019 Vezina Trophy-winner — Martin St-Louis saved him for this game after all. The starter is currently at the .900 mark Vasilevskiy finished with in 2023-24, but since the Canadiens finally begin to figure out their defensive tactics in mid-November (going back the 3-0 loss in Minnesota on November 14), his efficiency is a more competitive .907. The team-wide in-season adjustment has seen the Canadiens go from allowing a league-worst 4.13 goals before that game in St. Paul to having a current season average of 3.49.

When you also factor in the jump in offence Montreal is seeing in recent weeks, up to just under three per game on the season, the deficit in their play has dropped from almost one-and-a-half goals each game to now just about half a goal surrendered more than they score over the full 35-game slate so far. Dating back to the November 14 game marking the start of their turnaround, Montreal has outscored opponents 58-56. It’s that level of performance that provides at least a sliver of hope that the Canadiens can keep climbing in the standings (they would jump over the New York Rangers and New York Islanders with a win today), and yesterday’s shutout of the Florida Panthers only boosts the players’ belief that they can make it happen.

PREVIEW: Red Wings continue four-game homestand with matchup against Capitals on Sunday

McLellan also talked about how Saturday felt a little like the start of an NHL Training Camp.

“The Red Wings have their video staff, and we’re trying to blend stuff together,” McLellan said. “The amount of time it takes to flip stuff around, the video coaches did an unreal job today, in a stressful situation, just to get us ready for a meeting. You don’t have that when you’re planning for Training Camp because you’ve got six months—three months, probably—to get prepared, and we had three hours. But the on-ice part of it was good. We targeted two areas that we thought we needed to work on. The group was attentive, they asked good questions. Usually, that’s a good sign.”

Goalie Cam Talbot, who has McLellan as his bench boss for the third time of his NHL career, said the 57-year-old’s message to the Red Wings ahead of Saturday’s on-ice session was to “come out and work.”

“That’s what we’re all going to do from here on out,” Talbot said. “We’re going to learn as we go. It’s not easy when you change coaches midseason. You can’t change everything all at once. There’s a process to it, and I think that was the message. We’re going to work on things every practice and continue to build, and as we’re building we’re going to learn and get better.”

The Detroit Red Wings are set to take on the Washington Capitals in an exciting matchup on Sunday as they continue their four-game homestand at Little Caesars Arena.

The Red Wings are coming off a tough 3-2 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday night, but they’ll be looking to bounce back against the Capitals. Detroit will need to tighten up defensively and capitalize on their scoring chances in order to come out on top against a tough Washington team.

The Capitals, led by superstar Alex Ovechkin, have been playing some solid hockey as of late and currently sit near the top of the standings in the Metropolitan Division. The Red Wings will need to bring their A-game if they hope to secure a win against this talented Washington squad.

Be sure to tune in on Sunday to see all the action as the Red Wings look to defend their home ice against the Capitals. It’s sure to be a thrilling game that you won’t want to miss!
