  • PREVIEW: Blue Jackets begin road swing at Golden Knights

After Saturday’s win over Los Angeles, the Blue Jackets had something that has been in short supply this season in the NHL.

    Time off.

The marathon that is the league schedule has felt like a sprint at times this season, including when the Blue Jackets played 13 times in the first 23 days of December leading into the holiday break.

So when the team looked at the schedule and saw four full days off after its last game, head coach Dean Evason saw it as the perfect chance for a mental and physical reset before tonight’s game at Vegas.

“It’s not just that we’re off the ice and resting our legs and our bodies, it’s forgetting about the game for a little bit,” Evason said. “You get recharged and go do something else. We believe 100 percent that the mental end of it is as important as the physical end of it. You have that attitude that you’re fresh and mentally positive, then you’ll give yourself a good opportunity to compete and have success.”

The Blue Jackets didn’t practice either Sunday or Monday, giving the players two days away from the ice to recharge both the minds and the legs. So what did the players do with the time off? Some spent it with families if they’re around, while others got caught up on the life things that often fall through the cracks in the midst of a hectic season.

For wing Zach Aston-Reese, that meant picking up his dry cleaning and shopping for curtains for his home in New Jersey.

“I was doing adult stuff,” he said with a laugh after Tuesday’s practice. “It’s been good. It’s definitely nice to get away from the rink a little bit, just reset. We had a really good practice today. I think everyone was flying out there.”

The two practice days ahead of Wednesday’s flight that kicks off a four-game road trip allowed Columbus to home in on just about everything on the ice, from 5-on-5 structure to the power play and penalty kill to specialty areas like 3-on-3 overtime and a team shootout competition won by Luca Del Bel Belluz.

“We haven’t had a practice like this today with fresh bodies and all the bodies, so we want to work on everything,” Evason said Tuesday. “We’ll try to touch everything up. We’re doing video as well to refresh our memory of how we want to play the game structurally, so it’s been a nice little break as well as the practice time used in the right direction.”

Know The Foe: Vegas Golden Knights

Head coach: Bruce Cassidy (Third season)

    Team stats: Goals per game: 3.39 (4th) | Scoring defense: 2.76 (9th) | PP: 28.3 percent (2nd) | PK: 78.2 percent (20th)

The narrative: The 2023 Stanley Cup champs are seemingly in the mix for a championship every year, making the playoffs six of their first seven seasons and on pace to do so yet again. The Golden Knights failed to repeat a season ago, losing in the first round to Dallas, but should be in the mix yet again with a veteran coach and an experienced roster – of the team’s top 14 scorers, 13 are age 26 or older – that knows how to win in the postseason.

Team leaders: Jack Eichel might be having the best season of his decorated career, as the now-28-year-old center is eighth in the NHL in scoring with a 16-48-64 line as well as a plus-27 rating on the season. Mark Stone adds 13 goals and 46 points in 37 games, while Shea Theodore is fourth among NHL blueliners with 44 points (six goals, 38 assists). Pavel Dorofeyev has a team-best 22 goals and eight in the last nine games, while Tomas Hertl has 19 on the year and also has scored eight times in the last nine. Brayden McNabb’s plus-29 rating ties Kirill Marchenko for the NHL lead.

Adin Hill leads the charge in net and is 19-9-4 with a 2.65 GAA and .901 save percentage, while Ilya Samsonov has a 2.78 GAA and .898 save percentage while going 12-6-1.

What’s new: The Golden Knights were a certified wagon through 40 games, posting a 28-9-3 record and leading the NHL in points percentage. But the last three weeks have been a struggle, with Vegas just 3-6-2 in the last 11 games. The good news for the Golden Knights? For a change this time of year, everyone is healthy outside of former Blue Jackets forward William Karlsson (more on him in a second).

Trending: This is the first meeting of the season between the two teams, with the Jackets and Knights having split the 12 all-time meetings with six wins apiece. Columbus is just 2-4-0 in Vegas.

Former CBJ: Karlsson has a 7-11-18 line in 38 games on the season but was placed on injured reserve last week with a lower body injury.

The Columbus Blue Jackets are hitting the road to take on the Vegas Golden Knights in what promises to be an exciting matchup. With both teams looking to secure crucial points in the standings, this game is sure to be a battle until the final buzzer.

The Blue Jackets will be looking to continue their recent success on the road, as they aim to build momentum for the rest of the season. Led by their strong defensive play and dynamic offensive talents, Columbus will be looking to secure a key victory against a tough Golden Knights team.

On the other side, the Golden Knights will be looking to defend their home ice and secure a win in front of their loyal fans. With a high-powered offense and solid goaltending, Vegas will be a tough challenge for the Blue Jackets.

Don’t miss out on this exciting matchup between two talented teams. Tune in to see the Blue Jackets take on the Golden Knights in what promises to be a thrilling game.

  • NHL betting preview (Jan. 30): Capitals vs. Senators odds

Join Daily Faceoff’s Andy MacNeil as he handicaps Thursday’s matchup between the Washington Capitals and Ottawa Senators.

    Capitals vs. Senators Odds

    • Washington Capitals Moneyline: -110
    • Ottawa Senators Moneyline: -110
    • Puck Line: Capitals +1.5 (-295), Senators -1.5 (+210)
    • Game Total: 5.5 (Over +110, Under -130)

    Game odds via Sports Interaction.

    Handicapping the Capitals (34-16 SU, 32-18 ATS, 19-28-3 O/U)

Washington heads into Thursday’s meeting against Senators looking for its eighth win in its last nine games as the Capitals finish up a five-game road trip. However, while the Capitals have been winning games at an insane rate, they haven’t looked much like a true contender over the last month.

According to Evolving Hockey, the Capitals rank 19th in even strength expected goals percentage and 25th in shot attempt percentage since Dec. 30, but their poor play has been masked by incredible goaltending. The Capitals have been totally average offensively, but no team has allowed fewer goals per 60 minutes over the last month.

Washington can thank Logan Thompson, who ranks first in goals saved above expected and save percentage since Dec. 30, but Charlie Lindgren has also been good. Lindgren ranks 10th in goals saved above expected over the last month, and fifth in save percentage, but he hasn’t had much playing time, with just five starts in January.

Head coach Spencer Carbery had been alternating between Thompson and Lindgren until earlier this month when he started to ride Thompson due to Lindgren’s injury. That said, while the 27-year-old has clearly been the better of the two, and deserves to start most of the games, I’m expecting Lindgren to be between the pipes on Thursday now that he’s back to full health.

    Handicapping the Senators (26-24 SU, 21-29 ATS, 14-30-6 O/U)

Ottawa kicked off its four-game homestand with wins over the Toronto Maple Leafs and Utah Hockey Club. Now the Senators return from a three-day break, looking for their third win in a row. The Senators are 14-7-2 at home this season, and they have gone 9-3 straight-up at home since losing five home games in the middle of November.

Anton Forsberg will be in the crease on Thursday, which will mark his fourth start in the last six games. Forsberg had an incredibly tough start to the season, going 4-8-1 with a goals-against average of 3.10 and a save percentage of .883, but since Jan. 10, he’s 2-1-0 while posting a 1.70 GAA and a .935 SV%.

However, the Senators haven’t looked good at even strength over the last month, ranking 21st in expected goals percentage, 23rd in shot attempt percentage, and 32nd in goal share. No team has scored fewer goals per 60 minutes at even strength than Ottawa has over the last month, but they’ve been able to play .500 hockey thanks to solid defense and goaltending. The Senators rank 10th in expected goals against and 12th in goals against per 60 minutes since Dec. 30.

Their struggles on the power play hasn’t helped, either, as Ottawa has converted on just 12.8 percent of their power play opportunities over the last month, but once again, they have been good on the defensive side of things. Ottawa ranks ninth on the penalty kill, with a 82.5 success rate, over the last month.

Best bet for Capitals vs. Senators

    • 3-Way result: Regular Time Tie (+300) at Sports Interaction

Five out of the past 10 meetings between the Capitals and Senators have gone to extra time, including the last game on Jan. 16, which Washington won 1-0 on an Alex Ovechkin goal in overtime. Both teams have trended heavily toward the under this season, especially as of late, and therefore, this should be another tightly contested matchup.

The Washington Capitals will be facing off against the Ottawa Senators on January 30th in what is sure to be an exciting match-up. The Capitals are currently sitting in second place in the Metropolitan Division, while the Senators are in seventh place in the Atlantic Division.

The Capitals are the favorites heading into this game, with odds of -175. They have been playing strong hockey as of late, winning six of their last ten games. Led by superstar Alex Ovechkin, the Capitals have one of the most potent offenses in the league.

The Senators, on the other hand, are the underdogs with odds of +150. They have struggled this season, winning just three of their last ten games. However, they have shown flashes of potential and have the ability to surprise the Capitals.

In terms of betting options, the over/under for this game is set at 6.5 goals. The Capitals have been scoring at a high rate recently, so the over could be a good bet. Additionally, you may want to consider placing a bet on the Capitals to win by more than one goal, as they have been dominant in their recent victories.

Overall, this game has the potential to be a high-scoring affair, with the Capitals likely coming out on top. Make sure to tune in on January 30th to see how it all plays out!

  • PREVIEW: Red Wings open Western Canada leg of four-game road trip in Edmonton on Thursday

The Red Wings practiced at Little Caesars Arena’s BELFOR Training Center on Wednesday morning before departing for Edmonton. Patrick Kane (upper body) and Vladimir Tarasenko (illness) both participated, but J.T. Compher (upper body) and Jeff Petry (undisclosed) did not.

Per McLellan, he doesn’t expect Kane to play on Thursday but expects Tarasenko to return to the lineup. Compher will travel with the team on this road trip, while Petry will not.

Tied with the Vegas Golden Knights for first in the Western Conference’s Pacific Division at 67 points apiece, the Oilers most recently defeated the Kraken, 4-2, on Monday.

Captain Connor McDavid, who scored a goal in his return from a three-game suspension on Monday, leads the defending Western Conference champions in assists (45) and is second in goals (21) and points (66) behind Leon Draisaitl (35-40—75) this season. In 33 games, netminder Stuart Skinner has a 19-11-3 record with a 2.69 goals-against average and a pair of shutouts.

“I had the luxury of coaching them,” McLellan said about McDavid and Draisaitl. “The two of them are elite separately and super elite together. They play a completely different game. One is fast, one slows it down with passing and vision.”

Seider said the best way to defend against Edmonton’s star power is to do so as a five-man unit.

“Really focusing on keeping them to the outside, eliminating chances from the inner slot and try to eliminate extended D-zone shifts,” Seider said. “I think the more we have the puck, the better we’ll be and the more offense we’ll play.”

The Detroit Red Wings are set to kick off the Western Canada leg of their four-game road trip as they face off against the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday night. After a tough loss to the Vancouver Canucks, the Red Wings will be looking to bounce back and secure a much-needed win.

Edmonton has been playing well as of late, with star players Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl leading the way. The Red Wings will need to bring their A-game if they hope to come out on top against this tough opponent.

Stay tuned for updates and highlights from the game as the Red Wings look to make a statement in Edmonton. Let’s go Red Wings! #LGRW #DetroitRedWings #NHL #EdmontonOilers #WesternCanadaTrip

  • Game Fifty Preview: Kings @ Lightning

The Los Angeles Kings head into their fourth of a five-game road trip taking on the Tampa Bay Lightning.

This is the second and final meeting of the 2024-25 NHL Regular Season between these two clubs. The Kings pulled out a 2-1 victory at home on January 4, 2025. During that contest, Kings Defenseman Joel Edmundson took a scary hit by Lightning Forward Zemgus Girgensons which sidelined the former for three games. To be out of action for only three games shows just how tough of a customer Edmundson is!

This is the second game of a back-to-back for the LA Kings who are 5-1-0 in game two, this season.

Tampa Bay have done well at home with a 15-7-1 record.

    FOEG’ET ABOUT IT!

Kings Forward Warren Foegele has squared off against the Lightning twenty times in his career. In his first matchup against Tampa Bay on October 16, 2018, Foegele finished the night with one assist in 15:09 TOI.

In the fourteen matchups that followed, Foegele was held without a point.

After that slump, he found the scoresheet three consecutive times on November 8, 2022, January 19, 2023, and November 18, 2023, registering one point in each contest (1G, 2A).

In their last two meetings, he has again been held without a point.

Foegele has only registered two points (1G, 1A) in twelve games played throughout the month of January.

    Warren Foegele in Seasons Past:

    January 2024: 11GP – 3G – 4A – 7P

    January 2023: 9GP – 1G – 2A – 3P

    January 2022: 10GP – 0G – 4A – 4P

Statistics, schmatistics! Just go out there and do your thing, Foegy!

    ‘BOUT IT, ‘BOUT IT

Since being blanked against the Kings on January 4, 2025, Lightning Forward Nikita Kucherov has recorded a point in twelve of thirteen contests (6G – 14A – 20P). In the only game he didn’t register a point, Tampa Bay were shutout 2-0 by the Detroit Red Wings.

    HAVE TO LAF ABOUT IT

On this road trip, Kings Forward Alex Laferriere has had two goals waved off due to play away from the puck. Both goals were pretty and clean which I’m sure adds to the frustration.

To avoid getting bitter, Laferriere needs to laugh it off and keep shooting.

Puck drop is slated for 4:05 PM PST. You can watch the game on television via the FanDuel Sports Network or listen live with the ESPN LA app.

Game Fifty Preview: Kings @ Lightning

The Los Angeles Kings are set to take on the Tampa Bay Lightning in their fiftieth game of the season. Both teams are coming off strong performances and will be looking to continue their winning ways.

The Kings have been led by their top line of Anze Kopitar, Dustin Brown, and Adrian Kempe, who have been producing at a high level all season. They will need to continue their strong play in order to compete with the high-powered Lightning offense.

Tampa Bay, on the other hand, boasts one of the most potent offenses in the league, led by superstars Steven Stamkos and Nikita Kucherov. The Lightning will look to continue their scoring prowess against a tough Kings defense.

In terms of goaltending, both teams have solid netminders in Jonathan Quick for the Kings and Andrei Vasilevskiy for the Lightning. It will be a battle of the goalies as they try to shut down the opposing offense.

Overall, this matchup promises to be an exciting and high-scoring game between two talented teams. Tune in to see who comes out on top in this clash of the titans.

  • 1/30 Preview – Offensive Progress The Focus + Back-To-Back, Doughty/Clarke, 5-on-3’s

WHO: Los Angeles Kings (26-16-6) @ Tampa Bay Lightning (26-20-3)
    WHAT: 2024-25 Regular-Season Game
WHEN: Thursday, January 30 @ 4:00 PM Pacific
WHERE: Amalie Arena – Tampa Bay, FL
HOW TO FOLLOW: VIDEO: FanDuel Sports Network – AUDIO – ESPN LA App – TWITTER: @dooleylak & @lakings

TODAY’S MATCHUP: Quick turnaround for the Kings, as they visit the Tampa Bay Lightning to complete a back-to-back set in Florida.

HEAD-TO-HEAD: The Kings skated to a 2-1 victory over Tampa Bay earlier this month back in Los Angeles.

Defenseman Mikey Anderson and forward Adrian Kempe scored in the victory, with Kempe burying the game-winning goal in the third period.

Since joining the Kings in 2021, forward Phillip Danault has led the team with four goals and six points versus the Lightning, including three points from three games here in Tampa Bay. Dating back to his time in Montreal, Danault led the Canadiens against Tampa Bay in scoring as well, with seven points (2-5-7) from nine games played.

KINGS VITALS: With the back-to-back, the Kings did not hold a morning skate in advance of tonight’s game.

With goaltender Darcy Kuemper getting the nod last night in Florida, expect goaltender David Rittich to start tonight’s game against the Lightning. Rittich has five career appearances against Tampa Bay, with a record of 0-2-1, a .862 save percentage and a 4.22 goals-against aveage.

For reference, here is how the team lined up last night in Florida –

Biggest question facing the Kings lineup decision tonight – will Drew Doughty go back-to-back?

Certainly didn’t have any training wheels on Game 1, playing just shy of 24 minutes in his return to the lineup. I certainly won’t be the guy suggesting that Drew Doughty can’t or won’t do something. There’s also defenseman Brandt Clarke, who missed his first game of the season last night in Tampa Bay. Feels like a reset opportunity for a young player. Expecting him back in the lineup soon.

Should the Kings look to make any additional changes, defensemen Kyle Burroughs and Andreas Englund are also available, along with Clarke.

LIGHTNING VITALS: Similar to the Kings, Tampa Bay enters tonight’s game with four losses from their last five games played.

Per Gabby Shirley of FanDuel Sports Network Florida, here’s how the Lightning aligned on Tuesday in Chicago –

Tampa Bay has two Kings draft picks currently in their lineup – defenseman Erik Cernak and forward Mikey Eyssimont.

Forwards Nikita Kucherov and Zemgus Girgensons did not practice yesterday, both designated with a “body maintenance” day. Both players are expected to play tonight against the Kings. Kucherov has nine goals and 23 points in his career versus Los Angeles.

Storyline Of The Day – Scoring Goals
Here are two quotes from last night’s post-game interviews. One from Drew Doughty, one from Warren Foegele.

Doughty – We’ve got to get more bodies to the net for sure. I know that’s the old saying, but we had some shots at the end, just floaters through that we didn’t get any sticks on, any bodies in front. Got to do that and it’s just about bearing down.

Foegele – At the end of the day, we’ve got to get bodies to the net and then we’ve got to get the puck to the net when guys are there. They kind of go hand in hand. It’s just winning battles at the end of the day, that’s what hockey is really about, winning 50/50’s. Pucks to the net, bodies to the net, don’t get beat up the ice, things like that. The margin is so close.

    Pretty lockstep.

I thought Foegele had an interesting take, beyond this quote. He used a different word than the standard lines we’ve heard. In a separate quote from the one above, he said “possession.” What he meant was that while he wants to see the Kings get shots and get second opportunities, simply shooting it for the sake of shooting it isn’t working. That’s what Doughty was talking about. The power play has certainly been guilty of not shooting enough and you can’t circle the zone endlessly without any output. There’s a balance there.

Few goaltenders will get beat regularly on clean shots from the outside. And, let’s face it, the Kings don’t have a ton of guys who are scoring from those areas on a regular basis, especially right now. I think sometimes, though, the notion of keeping things simple could have the wrong consequence. I’ve preached it and while there’s merit to it, I was intrigued by Foegele’s comments as well. Possession in the offensive zone is important too, even if it’s just an extra cycle to get an extra body outside the crease. Both Doughty and Foegele think the team can do a better job of taking the right shots, the shots through traffic and the shots that lead to second and third chances and opportunities. That’s how this team can score.

There weren’t too many of those in Florida and that’ll have to change to get any kind of result tonight in Tampa Bay. There haven’t been very many this entire month, obviously. The Kings are last in the NHL in goals scored in January.

It’s not one thing that will get the Kings out of this. Will take a heck of a lot more than that. Kings can’t survive slumps offensively from 8-10 forwards and the defensive core at the same time. So, they need multiple players to get one. Then two. And build. Not going to be easy and the schedule tonight isn’t going to help. Time to dig in and work.

    3 To Watch For –
    – On Brandt Clarke, my understanding is that this is a bit of a reset for him. Jordan Spence had one early in the season. Alex Laferriere had one last year. If I recall back to when he was a younger player, I believe Adrian Kempe had one as well.

Seemed to work out well on all fronts there. Ultimately, I don’t know how Clarke will respond. I’d like to think he’ll bounce back exactly as Spence did back in October and how Laferriere did last season. For both of those players, it was one game out and right back in.

Yesterday, Jim Hiller spoke about how Clarke was thrust into Top-4 minutes pretty early in the season. At first, he handled it exceptionally well and Hiller reiterated that yesterday. He’s played a lot of good hockey. The grind has gotten tougher of late. It’s hard to think about this being Clarke’s first season in the NHL on a full-time basis. He’s never gone through this. A small dip in his play isn’t all that crazy.

I don’t know yet if he will play tonight. Will ask pre-game for sure. Hoping, certainly, that we see this in the long run as the same blip on the radar as many others have.

    – Joke’s on us with Doughty, eh?

23:51 in his first game of the season. Played an extended shift late in the third period with the Kings down 2-0. He played on the first power-play unit and had 3 shot attempts. Only saw a bit of PK duty and admitted that he doesn’t fully know the system yet and it’ll take time for him to become familiar and contribute there. It’s also more taxing, so Doughty stayed off the kill by design.

So, will he play again tonight? I’m done making predictions. I would’ve taken the under on 23 minutes and I’d have lost my money. Immediately after the game, Doughty seemed to be feeling pretty good. Not always the same the next day, though. Again, will speak with Hiller at the rink in a few hours and will get a firm update on Doughty’s status and second-night availability.

    – A troubling statistic, beyond the offense – The Kings have given up a 5-on-3 goal in back-to-back games. More troubling is that three of the four penalties committed have come in the offensive zone.

Warren Foegele took the lone defensive-zone penalty last night and took accountability post game for putting the team in a bad spot. I didn’t request to talk with Trevor Lewis but I’d imagine he’d have done the same. The penalty on Lewis was in the offensive zone, 200 feet from danger. Can’t take that penalty. Foegele’s came after the Kings nearly survived with a strong kill. Five seconds later, 1-0 was 2-0.

Right now, the margin for error is razor thin. I don’t know about you all, but the goal to make it 2-0 felt like a backbreaker. Hard to see three goals in the third period right now for the Kings, especially against Florida. No excuses on those types of penalties and when goals are as hard to come by as they are right now, can’t have those types of lapses.

Kings and Lightning, second to last of five straight here on the road. Time to turn things around.

As we gear up for the next game on 1/30, the focus for the team has been on offensive progress. With a string of tough losses, the coaching staff and players are honing in on improving their scoring opportunities and execution.

One key area of focus has been the back-to-back games that the team will face this weekend. With limited rest between games, maintaining energy levels and staying sharp will be crucial for success.

Another storyline to watch is the matchup between star defensemen Doughty and Clarke. Both players have been key contributors on the blue line, and their battle on the ice is sure to be intense.

Additionally, the team has been working on their 5-on-3 power play opportunities. With the advantage of two extra skaters, converting on these chances can be a game-changer. Look for the team to capitalize on these situations and make the most of their power play opportunities.

As the team prepares for the upcoming game, the focus remains on offensive progress and taking advantage of key opportunities. Stay tuned for an exciting matchup on 1/30!

  • Riders on the Storm: Blackhawks at Hurricanes Preview

The Chicago Blackhawks close out January with a game in North Carolina on Thursday night, taking on the Hurricanes.

It’s been just over a week since these two teams faced off, a 4-3 overtime win for Hurricanes in which the Blackhawks failed to hold on to a two-goal lead. Since then, the Hurricanes have won three of their four games, including shutting out the New York Rangers 4-0 on Tuesday. The Rangers game was especially interesting because it was the first game in which the Hurricanes newly acquired players — Mikko Rantanen and Taylor Hall — registered their first points with the team. Both players picked up primary assists on separate goals from Andrei Svechnikov.

Other than that, the team and player information from last Monday’s game preview remains basically the same. Line are where things are changed up since the Blackhawks last saw them due to the new players as well as a few members of the Hurricanes roster battling illnesses.

Rantanen has been on the top line with Sebatian Aho and Jackson Blake while Hall has been on the second with Jasper Kotkaniemi and Svechnikov. With Aho potentially out tonight, Jack Roslovic –usually the fourth-line center — was skating with Rantanen, so these lines may get shifted even more.

Speaking of Hall, though, he’s talked about the trade from the Blackhawks, noting his decreased playing time in recent weeks. He believed that the younger players coming into the locker room impacted his playing time, which is somewhat true with Frank Nazar, but other veterans — like Ilya Mikheyev and Nick Foligno — had increased playing time over him. Lukas Reichel actually saw a dip in his playing time in the final 10 games Hall was with the team, and neither he nor Colton Dach played more than Hall consistently.

Moving on to the Blackhawks current roster, they’re coming off a 4-1 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday night, moving them more securely into the 31st ranking in the NHL standings instead of dead last. It was another game in which the young players shined: Bedard scored a ridiculous goal, Landon Slaggert got his first NHL goal this season, Reichel picked up a primary point, and Arvid Soderblom stopped 34 of 35 shots for a .971 save percentage.

The only sour note from the game was that Dach and Nolan Allan both were in the press box instead of on the ice and, while both look to be drawing back into the lineup on Thursday against Carolina, it’s still not exactly sweet.

Instead of reuniting Dach with Reichel, where they have been good together, he’s taking Pat Maroon’s place on the fourth line. Arguably, Anders Sorensen does not want to play three kids together on a line, but that would have been quite fun. Allan is also replacing another kid in Ethan Del Mastro instead of the preferred TJ Brodie, another womp womp moment considering the chemistry those two young defenders built for an entire season in Rockford.

It looks like Soderblom is expected to be the starter, likely a reward for the outstanding steal of a game against Tampa.

  • Preview: Anderlecht vs. Hoffenheim – prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Thursday’s Europa League clash between Anderlecht and Hoffenheim, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Belgian side Anderlecht will hope to confirm their automatic qualification for the Europa League round of 16 when they host Hoffenheim at Lotto Park on Thursday.

The home team are seventh with 14 points and a win on Thursday would secure automatic progression, whereas the visitors’ 3-2 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur on January 23 left them 28th with six points and on the brink of elimination given they are three points and four places from the round of 16 playoffs.

    Match preview

Anderlecht were beaten 2-0 by Viktoria Plzen last Thursday, a game in which they created no big chances, faced four and conceded in the third minute of the first half.

The hosts occupy one of eight automatic qualifications spots but could be caught by six of the first seven teams outside the top eight.

Manager David Hubert‘s side are fourth in the Belgian top flight with 39 points after 23 matchweeks, and they currently occupy one of six championship playoff spots.

The Purple and White have won five of their last seven games in all competitions – losing two – and have in fact only been beaten in one of their past 11 matches in the Europa League, winning six in that time.

Hubert’s team boast a strong record at home given they have achieved victory in nine of their 12 most recent outings at Lotto Park and are also unbeaten in their last six games at home in the Europa League.

Manager Christian Ilzer of Hoffenheim during his side's match against Borussia Dortmund, on December 15, 2024© Imago

Opponents Hoffenheim created enough chances to win against Tottenham considering they produced over 2.5 xG and six big chances, but their defence proved to be their undoing once again.

The Bundesliga club have conceded 11 times in their past four fixtures and 37 goals in the league, with only the bottom three in the German top flight posting a worse defensive record so far.

Head coach Christian Ilzer‘s side are three points from the teams ranked 24th to 21st in the Europa League table, and they also have the joint worst goal difference of the teams ranked 28th or above.

Hoffenheim have won one and drawn one of their last three games in all competitions, but they were winless in their prior nine matches – succumbing to defeat six times – and have only triumphed in one of their past nine Europa League fixtures.

Ilzer will be alarmed by his side’s performances on the road this season, as while the beat Holstein Kiel 3-1 on January 18 in their most recent away game, they lost seven and drew five of their previous 12 away matches.

    Team News

Anderlecht's Jan Vertonghen on August 4, 2024© Imago

Anderlecht will head into their clash without goalkeeper Colin Coosemans, while centre-back Jan Vertonghen is a doubt.

Those injuries could mean shot-stopper Mads Juhl Kikkenborg will be shielded by a back three of Jan-Carlo Simic, Leander Dendoncker and Ludwig Augustinsson.

Midfielders Mats Rits and Theo Leoni are likely to start in midfield given Majeed Ashimeru is a doubt.

Forward Kasper Dolberg and Samuel Edozie have been ruled out, so perhaps Tristan Degreef and Nilson Angulo will flank striker Luis Vazquez.

Meanwhile, it is difficult to predict what XI Hoffenheim will play on Thursday given their extensive injury list which includes centre-backs Christopher Lenz and Ozan Kabak, as well as goalkeeper Oliver Baumann.

Luca Philipp is almost certain to start in goal, and he may be protected by centre-backs Arthur Chaves and Kevin Akpoguma.

Midfielder Anton Stach has been a regular in the XI, and he could be partnered by Finn Ole Becker, especially as the likes of Diadie Samassekou and Grischa Promel will not be in the matchday squad.

Andrej Kramaric is likely to feature in the forward line alongside attackers Max Moerstedt, Tom Bischof and Adam Hlozek considering Ihlas Bebou and Haris Tabakovic are unavailable.

    Anderlecht possible starting lineup:
Kikkenborg; Simic, Dendoncker, Augustinsson; Foket, Rits, Leoni, Maamar; Degreef, Vazquez, Angulo

    Hoffenheim possible starting lineup:
Philipp; Gendrey, Chaves, Akpoguma, Prass; Stach, Becker; Hlozek, Bischof, Moerstedt; Kramaric

    SM words green background

    We say: Anderlecht 2-1 Hoffenheim

Anderlecht should be considered strong favourites considering their strong record at home, as well as the fact the visitors are in the midst of an injury crisis.

Hoffenheim may be forced to attack aggressively given they must win if they are to have a chance of reaching the round of 16, and if they were to do so, they may leave space in behind their defensive line for the hosts to exploit.

Anderlecht will take on Hoffenheim in a highly anticipated match-up in the Europa Conference League. Both teams will be looking to secure an important victory as they aim to progress in the competition.

    Prediction:
This match is expected to be a close encounter, with both teams evenly matched. Anderlecht will have the home advantage, but Hoffenheim have shown their strength in the competition so far. It could be a tight game, but I predict a 2-2 draw.

    Team News:
Anderlecht will be without key defender Vincent Kompany, who is sidelined with an injury. However, they will have the likes of Yari Verschaeren and Lukas Nmecha leading the attack.

Hoffenheim will also be missing some key players, including striker Andrej Kramaric. However, they will have the likes of Christoph Baumgartner and Mijat Gacinovic to provide a threat going forward.

    Lineups:
Anderlecht: Van Crombrugge, Mykhaylichenko, Hoedt, Miazga, Murillo, Cullen, Lokonga, Verschaeren, Olsson, Ashimeru, Nmecha.

Hoffenheim: Baumann, Brenet, Posch, Hoogma, Sessegnon, Grillitsch, Gacinovic, Baumgartner, Skov, Beier, Dabbur.

  • Preview: Ajax vs. Galatasaray – prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Thursday’s Europa League clash between Ajax and Galatasaray, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Looking to retain their unbeaten status for the entirety of the league phase, Galatasaray will visit the home of Ajax in the Europa League on Thursday night.

De Godenzonen are set to be involved in the playoff round next month, whilst Cimbom are still fighting for an automatic spot in the last 16 of the competition.

    Match preview

Ajax's Brian Brobbey pictured on January 11, 2025© Imago

Following a sobering fifth-placed finish in the Eredivisie during the 2023-24 campaign, Dutch giants Ajax are beginning to slowly ascend towards the top of European football once again, with Thursday night’s hosts practically assured of a place in the top 24 of the Europa League.

Collecting 10 points from their first seven matches of the league phase, De Godenzonen are sitting in 16th position in the 36-team rankings, meaning that an extraordinary set of results would need to occur to knock the Eredivisie side out of the competition on the final matchday.

That being said, there was a shock result for Ajax last Thursday night, when Francesco Farioli‘s troops were stunned by Latvian minnows Rigas Futbola Skola, who snatched all three points from their battle in Riga courtesy of a late strike from 22-year-old midfielder Adam Markhiev.

Back on their own patch for the first time since the 2-1 Eredivisie success over RKC Waalwijk on January 11, De Godenzonen will be looking to continue a stellar recent record at the Johan Cruijff Arena, with the hosts enjoying a three-game winning streak at the Amsterdam venue.

Galatasaray's Okan Buruk pictured on December 12, 2024© Imago

Heading into the final game of their January schedule, Galatasaray have tasted defeat in a competitive match on just three occasions so far during a terrific 2024-25 campaign, with two of those losses coming against Young Boys in Champions League qualifying in August, sentencing the Turkish side to a term in the Europa League.

Cimbom have not sulked following that heartbreak against the Swiss champions, though, instead turning into one of the best outfits in UEFA’s second-tier club competition, with Thursday’s visitors alongside Lazio and Manchester United as one of three clubs who are still unbeaten in the league phase.

However, a record of four draws across seven contests so far means that Okan Buruk‘s men still have plenty of work to do in order to secure an automatic spot in the last 16, with Galatasaray currently occupying ninth position, one point and one place behind FCSB in eighth.

Despite being wanted by a number of elite European clubs over the summer, Victor Osimhen eventually opted for a loan move to Cimbom, with the Nigerian marksman a key asset for the Turkish side, scoring 16 goals in all competitions, including four goals in five Europa League battles.

    Team News

Ajax's Branco van den Boomen celebrates scoring on July 25, 2024© Imago

Picking up his third yellow card of the league phase last time out, Branco van den Boomen is suspended for Ajax’s home clash on Thursday night.

De Godenzonen are also battling against a number of fitness issues, with Benjamin Tahirovic last featuring in November after a head injury.

The hosts’ options at left-back are restricted by the absence of Owen Wijndal, with the 25-year-old a doubt for matchday eight due to a knock.

Galatasaray talisman Osimhen will have to cope without the playmaking abilities of Hakim Ziyech, who is out of contention because of personal reasons.

Cimbom’s attack has been weakened further by the long-term absence of Mauro Icardi, who suffered a campaign-ending knee injury in November.

    Ajax possible starting lineup:
Pasveer; Gaaei, Sutalo, Rugani, Baas; Fitz-Jim, Henderson, Taylor; Traore, Godts, Akpom

    Galatasaray possible starting lineup:
Muslera; Ayhan, Sanchez, Bardakci, Jakobs; Torreira, Kutlu; Yilmaz, Mertens, Akgun; Osimhen

    SM words green background

    We say: Ajax 1-1 Galatasaray

With two European heavyweights clashing in Amsterdam, we are expecting a hard-fought affair between Ajax and Galatasaray on Thursday night.

Cimbom will be desperate to earn three points but will also be cautious of losing their unbeaten status, so a share of the points seems to be the most likely outcome.
