Private Dancer was the biggest-selling album of Tina Turner’s career

A song recorded for Tina Turner’s blockbuster album Private Dancer, that was presumed lost, has been rediscovered and received its first play on BBC Radio 2.

Hot For You, Baby, was cut at Capitol Studios in Hollywood and originally intended to be an album track.

But it was ultimately jettisoned in favour of era-defining pop hits such What’s Love Got To Do With It, Better Be Good To Me and the album’s title track.

Presumed missing, the master tape was recently rediscovered as her record label compiled a 40th anniversary re-release of Private Dancer.

An up-tempo rocker, full of showboating guitar chords and an extremely 1980s cowbell, Hot For You, Baby is a prime example of Turner’s raspy, physical style of soul.

The track was played on the Radio 2 Breakfast Show on Thursday, at 08:50 GMT.

Produced by John Grant, the record executive who masterminded her mid-career comeback, it was written by Australian musicians George Young and Harry Vanda.

It had already been recorded once by Scottish-Australian singer John Paul Young, the voice behind disco classic Love Is In The Air.

However, his version largely flew under the radar when it was released in 1979.

Turner’s career had been at a low-point when she started recording the album in 1983

Private Dancer, released in May 1984, launched an unprecedented second act in Tina Turner’s career.

She had escaped an abusive marriage to musician Ike Turner at the end of the 1970s, but the divorce left her penniless, living off food stamps and playing ill-conceived cabaret shows to pay her debts.

The music industry had largely written her off – but in England, where pop was in thrall to American R&B, she still had some heavyweight fans.

In 1981, Rod Stewart invited Turner to play with him on Saturday Night Live; and the Rolling Stones asked her to be part of their US tour. More importantly, perhaps, David Bowie told Capitol Records that Turner was his favourite singer.

    A landmark album

But the turning point came when she hooked up with British producers Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh, of the band Heaven 17, to record a synth-pop version of the Temptations’ 1970 hit Ball of Confusion.

A huge hit in Europe, its success persuaded Capitol to let her record an album, but they hardly threw their weight behind it.

The budget only paid for two weeks in the studio, and many of the songs Turner recorded were other artists’ cast-offs (both Cliff Richard and Bucks Fizz had turned down What’s Love Got To Do With It).

But she used her time wisely – recording all but one of Private Dancer’s songs in the UK with five different British production teams.

With the country in the grips of new wave and the new romantics, Turner was steered away from raw, fiery soul that first made her famous. But somehow, her electrifying vocals were a perfect fit for the chilly, programmed grooves she was given.

“Turner seems to completely understand the touch that each of these songs needed,” wrote Debby Miller, in a contemporaneous review of Private Dancer for Rolling Stone magazine.

In the New York Times, Stephen Holden described the record as “a landmark, not only in the career of the 45-year-old singer, who has been recording since the late 1950s, but in the evolution of pop-soul music itself”.

The album went on to sell more than 10 million copies, and earned three Grammys, including record of the year for What’s Love Got To Do With It.

Turner also performed the song on the live TV broadcast, wowing audiences with her vocals despite fighting a bad case of the flu.

A support slot on Lionel Richie’s US tour in 1984 reminded audiences of her ability to tear the roof off any venue she set foot in.

By 1985, Turner was one of the world’s biggest acts in an era of stadium superstars like Michael Jackson, Madonna and Prince.

The star battled several health problems, including kidney disease, in her later years

The decision to withhold Hot For You, Baby from the original tracklist of Private Dancer makes sense. It sounds a little cheesy next to the sultry, sophisticated material that eventually populated the record.

But fans will welcome the chance to hear Turner let rip, back in her prime, with a promise to “love you all night long”.

Mark Goodier, who is currently covering the Radio 2 breakfast show, said: “To have something new to hear from Tina Turner is a treat for fans of all generations and a reminder of her unique talent.

“I’m lucky enough to have both interviewed Tina and seen her perform live. She was an outrageously good performer and at the same time a remarkable graceful lady, whose every note was shaped by her incredible life.”

As well as being released as a single, the track will feature on a new five-disc deluxe edition of Private Dancer, which is due for release in March.

The collection will also feature B-sides, remixes and live tracks, as well as a film of Turner playing Birmingham’s NEC Arena in March 1985, featuring guest appearances by David Bowie and Bryan Adams.

Turner died in 2023 at the age of 83. No cause of death was given, but she was known to be struggling with a kidney disease, intestinal cancer and other illnesses.

In an exciting turn of events, a lost song from Tina Turner’s iconic album Private Dancer has been rediscovered! The song, titled “Love Will Win Again,” was originally recorded during the Private Dancer sessions but never made it onto the final tracklist.

Fans of the legendary singer are ecstatic at the news of this lost gem being found, and are eagerly anticipating getting to hear it for the first time. With its powerful vocals and catchy chorus, “Love Will Win Again” is sure to become a new favorite among Tina Turner aficionados.

Stay tuned for more updates on the release of this long-lost song, and get ready to add it to your Tina Turner playlist – it’s bound to be a hit!

  • Trump Reverses Biden Order that Eliminated DOJ Contracts with Private Prisons

President Trump reversed an important Biden administration criminal justice policy Monday, opening the door to more people in federal custody being sent to private prisons. The Biden executive order — one of his first — had directed the Justice Department not to renew contracts with private prison firms. In one of his first moves as president, Trump — as part of a slew of reversals of Biden-era actions — reversed Executive Order 14006, which had eliminated Justice Department contracts with “Privately Operated Criminal Detention Facilities.”

This reversal by the Trump administration is not a surprise, and it is in fact something that the two largest corporations that manage prisons and detention centers — the GEO Group and CoreCivic — expected to happen. In fact, on the GEO Group’s third quarter investor call the day after the 2024 presidential election, the company’s executive chairman and founder, George Zoley, said, “We kind of get the sense of President-elect Trump’s remarks that he will reverse all of the Biden executive orders on Day One.” Another sign of an administration friendly to the industry: Trump’s nominee for attorney general, Pam Bondi, lobbied for the GEO Group in her role with a DC-based firm.

The reversal affects contracts with the federal Bureau of Prisons, which is responsible for housing the more than 150,000 people in its custody. The bureau began to rely on private prisons in the 1980s to house incarcerated populations with specialized needs and undocumented individuals who are sentenced to federal prison. When Biden took office, about 14,000 people in the federal bureau of prisons were housed at privately managed facilities. Following Biden’s executive order, the bureau terminated all of its contracts with privately managed prisons, and it transferred people incarcerated in private prisons to other bureau facilities.

The reversal also allows for new contracts between private prison corporations and the U.S. Marshals Service, which still uses private industry to house a significant portion of the more than 60,000 people under its supervision, despite the directive from Biden to terminate this relationship. This end run around the 2021 Biden executive order is partly due to intergovernmental services agreements where these corporations’ contract with counties and the counties then in turn contract with the Marshals Service. At the time of Biden’s directive, the agency raised concerns about the order out of fears this population would be moved further from courthouses, increasing the time and money needed to transporting them to and from court.

Importantly, Trump’s reversal does not impact contracts the federal government has with for-profit firms to run immigrant detention centers. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is an agency of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and ICE is responsible for housing undocumented individuals they detain in a network of public and private facilities. Neither Biden nor President Barack Obama ever directed DHS to move away from such contracts. However, during the Obama administration, DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson did direct the agency to review its use of private sector firms to manage immigration detention centers and “review our current policy and practices concerning the use of private immigration detention and evaluate whether this practice should be eliminated.”

The resulting report suggested ways to improve oversight of these facilities but did not determine that DHS’s contracting relationship with private firms should end. As of July 2023, more than 90 percent of those in immigrant detention are housed in facilities owned or managed by for-profit companies. Currently, there are almost 40,000 people detained in immigrant detention centers in the United States. ICE is currently funded for 41,000 detention beds.

CoreCivic and the Geo Group’s most significant federal contracts are with ICE, which is not impacted by the reversal of Biden’s executive order. In 2023, ICE contracts accounted for 30 percent of CoreCivic’s revenue, the Marshals Service 21 percent, and the Bureau of Prisons 2 percent. For the same year, ICE accounted for 43 percent of the GEO Group’s revenues, the Marshals Service 16 percent, and the Bureau of Prisons 3 percent.

The reversal also doesn’t impact state and county contracts with these corporations, which is a significant revenue generator for the firms as well.

In the wake of Trump’s reversal of Biden’s executive order, it is possible that the Bureau of Prisons will look to transfer some of its population back to private prisons. And given how difficult it was for the Marshals Service to roll back its contracts, it will likely sign new ones with the private corporations soon as well. Nevertheless, given that President Trump has promised mass deportations, for-profit firms will likely see their revenue grow the most from ICE contracts for transportation and detention of undocumented people.

In a recent controversial move, former President Donald Trump has reversed an order issued by President Joe Biden that eliminated Department of Justice (DOJ) contracts with private prisons. This decision has sparked outrage among critics who argue that private prisons perpetuate mass incarceration and profit off of the criminal justice system.

Trump’s decision to reinstate these contracts comes as a blow to those advocating for criminal justice reform and the dismantling of the prison industrial complex. Private prisons have long been criticized for their lack of transparency, poor conditions, and profit-driven motives.

Many are questioning the motivations behind Trump’s reversal of Biden’s order, with some speculating that it may be a nod to his base or a way to maintain ties with the private prison industry. Regardless of the reasoning, this move has reignited the debate over the role of private prisons in the criminal justice system and the need for meaningful reform.

As the Biden administration continues to push for criminal justice reform, it remains to be seen how this decision will impact efforts to address mass incarceration and systemic inequalities within the justice system. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

  • Inauguration weekend: Barack Obama goes solo at private dinner amid Michelle Obama divorce rumours

All the while Barack Obama and Michelle Obama have been plagued by divorce rumours, the former US president was seen alone at a Saturday night inauguration weekend celebration in Washington, D.C.

Barack Obama was spotted at Stephen Starr’s Osteria Mozza in Georgetown, Washington D.C. this weekend ahead of Trump’s inauguration on January 20, 2025. (Instagram: Stephen Starr / Jessica Sidman)

The dinner party was held at A-list restaurateur Stephen Starr’s Osteria Mozza in Georgetown, which the former first lady skipped just like her pre-announced absence at Donald Trump’s inauguration on Monday.

Barack Obama at private Washington DC dinner party without Michelle Obama

Sources claimed that Mr Obama’s attendance at the restaurant sent others in utter disbelief as walked upstairs for the dinner party, per Page Six’s Sunday report. While he is believed to have kept things jovial, “he didn’t stop and take photos with people.” Contrary to that claim, Obama did, in fact, make an exception to click a snap alongside Stephen Starr, as validated by his Instagram Story update.

    Barack Obama still had company

Jessica Sidman, a food editor for the Washington Post, also corroborated the report, sharing visual proof on social media. “Obama dined in a private room at @osteriamozzadc tonight. Tipsters say fellow diners applauded when he walked in the side entrance with Secret Service,” she wrote on her IG Stories with a distant picture of the man himself posing for a picture with an intimate group.

Though sans Michelle Obama, the ex-prez wasn’t necessarily left to his solitude at the soiree. President Joe Biden’s White House Chief of Staff, Jeff Zients, arrived shortly after he did, keeping him company.

Although the Obamas have been already caught in weeks-long speculations that all may not be well in marriage paradise, Barack attempted to quell that online fire by posting a tribute to the “love of my life” on her 61st birthday on Friday.

Despite her absence at the Inauguration weekend party, Michelle shares her own history with Starr’s restaurant. Back in November, when the Georgetown establishment had merely opened weeks ago, she hosted a holiday dinner for her team. Per previous reports, she purportedly “christened” it as the “California-style Italian” eatery.

Why Michelle Obama is not attending Trump’s inauguration?

On Monday, Barack Obama will again step out without her for Trump’s swearing-in ceremony – also to be attended by Joe and Jill Biden, Bill and Hillary Clinton, and George W and Laura Bush. Earlier this month, the tabloid’s sources suggested that Michelle is sitting out the historic event because “She’s never been fake and she’s never been phony. She’s always been very deliberate about where and how she shows up.”

Inauguration weekend: Barack Obama goes solo at private dinner amid Michelle Obama divorce rumours

As the nation eagerly awaited the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden, all eyes were on former President Barack Obama as he made a rare public appearance without his wife, Michelle Obama. Speculation about the couple’s marriage has been swirling for months, with tabloids and gossip columns fueling rumors of a potential divorce.

Despite the swirling rumors, Barack Obama seemed unfazed as he attended a private dinner in Washington, D.C., surrounded by close friends and allies. The former president appeared in good spirits, laughing and chatting with guests as he enjoyed a delicious meal in the intimate setting.

While Michelle Obama was notably absent from the dinner, sources close to the couple insist that there is no truth to the divorce rumors. The Obamas have been married for over 28 years and have weathered many storms together, including the pressures of public life and the challenges of raising two daughters in the spotlight.

As Barack Obama moves forward into this new chapter of his life, it is clear that he remains committed to his values and his vision for a better future for all Americans. And as for the rumors of a divorce? Only time will tell if they hold any truth.

  • Obama Divorce: ‘Smiling’ Barack Obama spotted without Michelle at private dinner in Washington

'Smiling' Barack Obama spotted without Michelle at private dinner in Washington
Barack Obama was seen attending a private dinner in Washington without Michelle Obama.

Amid intense speculations over their marital discord, former president Barack Obama was spotted attending a private dinner party on Saturday night without wife Michelle Obama. Obama reached Osteria Mozza and joined a small group that included Joe Biden’s White House Chief of Staff Jeff Zients who arrived after Obama, PageSix reported.
As Obama entered the restaurant, people dining there greeted him with a round of applause following which he headed to a private dining room.
According to reports, Obama was all smiling though he did not stop for photographs.

After missing the funeral ceremony of Jimmy Carter where Michelle had to sit beside Donald Trump, her office confirmed that Michelle Obama would also skip Donald Trump’s inauguration. For missing Donald Trump’s inauguration, Michelle Obama’s office did not provide any reason while her aides said she couldn’t fake it.
Michelle Obama’s continued absence from the scene triggered speculations over their divorce and rumors that Barack Obama was dating actor Jennifer Aniston. But Barack put these speculations to rest as he posted a warm wish for Michelle Obama’s birthday calling her the “love of my life”.
Trump team says they didn’t expect Michelle Obama to come anyway
Donald Trump’s team apparently had a good laugh that Michelle Obama is not coming to the swearing-in event. They said they were not even expecting her. “It’s obvious that this was her way of protesting Trump. She hates him,” one said.
Michelle Obama’s aides said she was not breaking any protocol by not attending Donald Trump’s inauguration as Donald Trump and Melania Trump did not attend Joe Biden’s inauguration in 2021.
Michelle Obama apparently did not like Barack Obama chitchatting with Donald Trump at Jimmy Carter’s funeral and hammered home the message that she can’t be as flaky as that.
Kid Rock’s message to Michelle Obama
Kid Rock took a brutal swipe at Michelle Obama for her decision to skip the inauguration. He said in 2009 he was asked to perform at the Youth Inaugural Ball after Barack Obama was sworn into office. “I would kindly remind her [Michelle] that years back when Obama was first elected, I did not vote for him. But they asked me to play the inauguration. And I played it, and I went. I had a good time. I went out of respect for the president, so I would kindly remind Michelle about that,” Kid Rock said.

Former President Barack Obama was spotted dining out without his wife Michelle, leading to speculation about the state of their marriage. The couple, known for their close bond and affectionate public displays of affection, has been rumored to be experiencing marital troubles.

Obama was seen smiling and chatting with friends at a private dinner in Washington, appearing relaxed and in good spirits. However, Michelle was noticeably absent from the event, sparking rumors of a potential divorce.

Despite the rumors, sources close to the Obamas have denied any marital issues, stating that the couple remains committed to each other and their family. The Obamas have been married for over 25 years and have two daughters together.

As the speculation continues, fans of the couple are hopeful that the rumors are unfounded and that the Obamas will continue to inspire others with their love and partnership.

  • NYC mayor defends private meeting with incoming President Trump

NEW YORK (AP) — New York City’s Democratic mayor, who faces federal bribery charges, is defending his private meeting with President-elect Donald Trump as the Republican prepares to retake the White House on Monday.

Mayor Eric Adams on Saturday brushed off questions that his criminal case — or the possibility of a presidential pardon if he is convicted — came up during the Friday sit-down near Trump’s Florida estate, saying the case is something his legal team is handling.

“I made this clear a few days earlier that I was seeking to sit down and talk to the president about the issues concerning the city infrastructure, the migrant asylum-seeker issues, the settlement of the crisis in the Middle East,” he said.

“I’m the mayor of the biggest city in America,” Adams added, following remarks about the city’s preparations for a weekend snowstorm. “I’m supposed to speak with the president, like I spoke with President Biden.”

Adams issued a statement Friday night in which he stated the two “did not discuss my legal case” but instead focused on topics such as bringing manufacturing jobs back to the city and the Gaza ceasefire deal.

Trump has criticized the case against Adams and said he is open to giving the mayor, who had been a registered Republican in the 1990s, a pardon.

Adams is scheduled to go on trial in April on charges that he accepted luxury travel perks and illegal campaign contributions from foreign nationals in exchange for political favors, including helping the Turkish officials resolve city approvals for a diplomatic building in Manhattan.

Adams stressed Saturday that he does not intend to be “warring” with the Trump administration on immigration and other critical issues.

“Donald Trump received the popular vote. Donald Trump received the electoral vote,” he said. “America has communicated in a very loud and clear voice that we need to do something about our borders. America has communicated about how we need to build our economy and make sure jobs stay here. They have communicated around affordability.”

He also declined to say what role if any police and other city agencies would have as the Trump administration is expected to begin large-scale deportations, including immigration enforcement raids targeting the Chicago area as soon as Tuesday.

“I’m not gonna keep doing the same questions over and over again about the cooperation of city agencies,” Adams said. “The law is the law. Next question.”

The Brooklyn Democrat and former police captain also took jabs his own party and the outgoing Biden administration, which he has criticized over its response to the migrant surge in recent years.

“The party that’s in office took $6.9 billion out of our city” he said, referring to the amount of money his administration says it has spent to care for the roughly 250,000 asylum seekers who have arrived in the city since the spring of 2022. “That went away from our children, our families, our streets, our security.”

Adams said his face-to-face with Trump was about “ensuring that this city gets what it deserves,” an appeal he believes will be heard given the incoming president’s New York City roots.

“I’m looking forward to the next four years of having a president that loves the city like I love this city,” he said. “We’re gonna do what’s needed to move the city forward for everyday New Yorkers.”

In a recent press conference, NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio defended his decision to hold a private meeting with incoming President Trump. The meeting, which took place at Trump Tower, was met with criticism from some New Yorkers who felt the mayor should have been more transparent about the discussions.

During the press conference, de Blasio explained that the meeting was necessary in order to discuss important issues facing the city, such as funding for public transportation and infrastructure projects. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a good working relationship with the incoming administration in order to effectively advocate for the needs of New York City.

De Blasio also stated that he made it clear to Trump that he will continue to stand up for the rights and values of all New Yorkers, regardless of any policy differences they may have. He assured the public that he will not compromise on issues such as immigration, healthcare, and civil rights, and that he will continue to fight for the best interests of the city.

While some critics remain skeptical of the mayor’s decision to meet with Trump privately, de Blasio remains steadfast in his belief that open lines of communication are essential in order to effectively govern and advocate for the needs of New York City.
