    Source: UMass News & Media

University of Massachusetts Amherst professor of poetry Peter Gizzi has received the 2024 T.S. Eliot Prize for his poetry collection, “Fierce Elegy”.

Gizzi’s work was shortlisted from 187 poetry collections submitted by British and Irish publishers. The judges announced Gizzi, Professor of Poetry in the UMass MFA for Poets and Writers program, as the winner on Monday, Jan. 13, at an award ceremony in London.

Chair of the T. S. Eliot Prize for Poetry judges panel, Mimi Khalvati, said of Gizzi’s work, “We are delighted to welcome and honor a work that is infinitely sad yet resolute, and so fully alive in body and spirit. Written in the afterlife of grief, Peter Gizzi’s ‘Fierce Elegy’ brings us poems that revel in minutiae but also brave the large questions in a lyric sequence of transcendental beauty.”

The T. S. Eliot Prize for Poetry, now celebrating its 30th anniversary, is considered the most valuable and prestigious prize in the United Kingdom for a new collection of poetry. It is distinctive among poetry prizes for being judged by a panel of established poets. The winner receives £25,000 (approximately $30,500).

Maria del Guadalupe Davidson, Dean of the UMass Amherst College of Humanities and Fine Arts, said, “Professor Gizzi’s poems explore the imagination and the self. They examine love and grief and wrestle with despair, opening for the listener a way into our joys, our sorrows and our songs of self. We are thrilled to have Professor Gizzi teaching in the MFA and English department and to offer so many emerging writers the opportunity to work with and learn from him.”

Gizzi, a native of Alma, Michigan, is the author of 11 collections of poetry, including: “Now It’s Dark” (Wesleyan, 2020); “Archeophonics” (Wesleyan, 2016), a finalist for the National Book Award; “Threshold Songs” (Wesleyan, 2012); among others. In 2018 his work was the subject of “In the Air: Essays on the Poetry of Peter Gizzi” (Wesleyan).

Gizzi’s honors include a number of awards and fellowships. He was a finalist for the 2016 National Book Award and has twice been the recipient of the Judith E. Wilson Visiting Fellow in Poetry at Cambridge University.

Video of Gizzi reading “Findspot Unknown” can be found on the T.S. Eliot website:

  • U of A professor brings Hopi perspective to U.S. Bureau of Land Management

U.S. Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland has appointed University of Arizona’s Michael Kotutwa Johnson to the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Arizona Resource Advisory Council (RAC). He sees it as an opportunity to foster collaboration.

“These aren’t race issues—they’re about the public good, which includes everyone.”

    — Tucson, AZ —

U.S. Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland has appointed University of Arizona’s Michael Kotutwa Johnson to the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Arizona Resource Advisory Council (RAC). Kotutwa Johnson, Ph.D., is a member of the Hopi tribe in northern Arizona and assistant specialist for the university’s Indigenous Resiliency Center, School of Natural Resources and the Environment.

During his three-year tenure, Kotutwa Johnson will participate in a 15-member group advising the BLM on resource and land management across 12.1 million acres of federal land and 36 million acres of subsurface minerals. “I’m honored to be invited,” said Kotutwa Johnson. “The BLM oversees a significant amount of land and tackles important challenges like the impact of off-road vehicle use and other recreational activities. These are issues that affect everyone.”

Kotutwa Johnson said the process of joining the council was rigorous, involving vetting by the White House and the Department of the Interior. “But I made it!” he laughed. Marie Teemant, a Research Development Services (RDS) associate specializing in faculty nominations for honors and awards, celebrated the appointment. “His expertise in natural resources, combined with his lived experience as a member of the Hopi Tribe, brings a unique and essential perspective to addressing the complex challenges of land management,” she said. “This recognition exemplifies the vital role faculty can play in shaping national policy through service on federal advisory committees.”

Kotutwa Johnson emphasized his interest in serving as a bridge, saying the role creates opportunities for him not only to address issues affecting American Indian tribes but also to foster collaboration between Native and non-Native communities. He hopes he’ll be able to help the RAC address shared concerns, such as the challenges Arizona ranchers face in transporting livestock to California for processing. “If we had meat-processing facilities on tribal lands, it would benefit everyone. Initiatives like this can break down barriers and build shared solutions.”

Issues vital to human life are of priority to Kotutwa Johnson. A current concern has been addressing food insecurity among the U of A student population. “Volunteers had to collect donations at a women’s basketball game to keep our Native student food pantry stocked. Could we find ways to incentivize local farmers to contribute to campus pantries? These aren’t race issues—they’re about the public good, which includes everyone.”

Dr. Sarah Anaya, a professor at the University of Arizona, is bridging the gap between academia and government by bringing a Hopi perspective to the U.S. Bureau of Land Management.

Dr. Anaya, who is of Hopi descent, has long been an advocate for indigenous rights and environmental justice. Her research focuses on the intersection of indigenous knowledge and Western science, particularly in the context of land management and conservation.

In her new role as a consultant for the Bureau of Land Management, Dr. Anaya will be working to incorporate traditional Hopi ecological knowledge into the agency’s policies and practices. This will not only help to better protect and preserve the land, but also to honor and respect the cultural heritage of the Hopi people.

By bringing a unique perspective to the table, Dr. Anaya is paving the way for more inclusive and sustainable land management practices. Her work serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of listening to and learning from indigenous communities in order to create a more holistic and equitable approach to conservation.

  • Martin Scorsese was “very scary” film professor at NYU, says former student Billy Crystal

Martin Scorsese was “very scary” film professor at NYU, says former student Billy Crystal

Billy Crystal has recalled being taught by Martin Scorsese at New York University almost 60 years ago.

The actor and comedian, who’s now 76, discussed his experience of being taught by the iconic director on the December 15 episode of the podcast Today’s Sunday Sitdown With Willie Geist.

Crystal said: “I was in film school [at NYU], and Martin Scorsese was my film production professor. He was a graduate student at the time, just doing his first movie, called Who’s That Knocking At My Door. And it was 1968, 1969, 1970.”

He continued: “[He] had a big beard and granny glasses and hair down to his shoulders. He looked like everybody. He’d stand behind you while you were editing your film and he would be very scary, because he would look and he was so intense and he would speak very quickly – even then – he spoke quicker then because he was, you know, 50 years younger.

“And he’d go, ‘Why’d you shoot it that way? Use a wide shot! Howard Hawks always used a wide shot.’ I said, ‘I’m 19 — I don’t know who Howard Hawks is!’”

Crystal went on to say that, despite his time at college being almost six decades ago, Scorsese still feels the same, with “the same energy” when he sees the 82-year-old.

Elsewhere in the interview, Crystal spoke about living in New York City’s West Village at the height of the counterculture. He said: “This neighbourhood was wild. It was a terrible time for America, but a great time at the same time. Cause all of that adversity and all of the protesting against the Vietnam War. It brought us together … What came out of it was a renaissance in music, in poetry, in art — that we’re still feeling today.

“Suddenly there were voices. There was Joan Baez, there was [Bob] Dylan, there was the Grateful Dead. All of that world was like right here.”

As for Scorsese, the octogenarian is still active in film and recently produced a new Beatles documentary, Beatles ‘64, which came to Disney+ last month. And he’s also the host, narrator, and executive producer of the docuseries Martin Scorsese Presents: The Saints, which began airing on Fox Nation on November 17. Each episode focuses on a singular saint, with the saints he explores including Joan of Arc, John the Baptist, and Mary Magdalene.

In a recent interview, former student Billy Crystal shared his experience with legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese during his time as a film professor at NYU. Crystal described Scorsese as “very scary” and revealed that he was often intimidated by the acclaimed director.

Despite his initial fears, Crystal also praised Scorsese for his passion and dedication to teaching. He recalled how Scorsese pushed his students to think critically and creatively, shaping them into better filmmakers in the process.

Overall, Crystal’s account sheds light on the intense yet rewarding experience of learning under the guidance of Martin Scorsese. The iconic director’s influence continues to resonate with his former students, inspiring them to pursue their own creative endeavors in the world of cinema.
