  • Sri Lanka vs Australia: Rain slows tourists progress on day three

Rain slowed Australia’s progress on day three of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle.

After the tourists dominated the first two days, Sri Lanka resumed on 44-3 and reached 136-5 at lunch before the weather wiped out the rest of the day.

Left-arm seamer Mitchell Starc took the first of the two wickets to fall when Kamindu Mendis was caught down the leg side for 15.

Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva then gifted Australia a second as he charged left-arm spinner Matt Kuhnemann and was stumped for 22.

That left the hosts 107-5 but a partnership of 29 between Dinesh Chandimal and Kusal Mendis took Sri Lanka to the interval, with former skipper Chandimal 63 not out.

The rain did stop before the scheduled close but the wet conditions meant the umpires abandoned the day.

Day three of the Test match between Sri Lanka and Australia was marred by heavy rain, which slowed down the tourists’ progress in their second innings.

Australia had started the day with a healthy lead of over 200 runs, but the rain interruptions meant that they were unable to build on their advantage. The Sri Lankan bowlers were able to pick up crucial wickets, including the prized scalp of Steve Smith, before the weather intervened.

Despite the setbacks, Australia managed to reach a total of 200/5 by the end of the day, with Travis Head leading the way with a gritty half-century. The Sri Lankan bowlers, led by Suranga Lakmal and Lasith Embuldeniya, kept the pressure on the tourists and will be looking to wrap up the innings quickly on day four.

The rain delays have added a new twist to the match, as both teams will now have to contend with a shortened playing time to try and force a result. With the match finely poised, it promises to be an exciting finish as Sri Lanka look to level the series and Australia aim to secure a series win.

  • Pa. elections chief touts progress in reducing mail ballot rejection rate

HARRISBURG — County elections officials in Pennsylvania rejected more than 11,000 mail-in ballots for technical reasons in the November election, including thousands that were determined to violate the much litigated requirement that voters provide accurate, handwritten dates on the return envelopes.

Data from the Department of State released this week shows about 2,600 were turned down for having the wrong date and nearly 2,100 for having no date at all.

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court said in mid-January it will rule on whether the envelope date requirement violates a state constitutional mandate that elections be free and equal, the latest development in a string of court cases since mail-in voting was widely expanded under a 2019 law.

The elections agency also said about 3,000 votes didn’t count because the voters failed to put their ballot into a secrecy envelope and more than 3,500 were thrown out for lacking a signature. In addition, nearly 7,000 mail-in ballots that counties rejected in November had arrived to be counted after the cut-off time of 8 p.m. on Election Day, when polls closed.

The county workers who run the nuts and bolts of Pennsylvania elections do not use the outer envelope date for any practical purpose — they time stamp ballots when they arrive and know when they were sent out. Republicans who have advocated for the dates consider them an added layer of security.

The 11,000-plus votes rejected for wrong dates, no dates, no signatures or no security envelopes is a jump from the comparable figure in the November 2023 election, when about 8,000 votes were rejected for at least one of those four categories. However, 2024 was a high-turnout presidential election with a contested U.S. Senate race, while 2023 had less voter participation and only statewide judicial contests at the top of the ballot.

“Every vote is precious — a single vote being rejected is intolerable,” Secretary of State Al Schmidt said Friday. “So that’s why we have done all that we can to minimize the opportunity for voters to make mistakes.”

The Department of State redesigned mail-in ballot envelopes twice last year and engaged in a voter education effort, aiming to reduce the rejection rate. The percentage of returned mail ballots that were rejected fell from about 2.4% in the April primary to about 1% in November, the agency announced.

“We wanted to minimize opportunities for voters to make mistakes, whether they’re elderly or whether they’re filling this out when they’re sending their kids off to school in the morning,” Schmidt said.

There has been progress but there is more that counties can do to further reduce the rate of rejected mail ballots, said ACLU of Pennsylvania lawyer Vic Walczak.

“It’s 11,000 too many, so it’s better than the rejection rate before that,” said Walczak, who is involved in the pending state Supreme Court case. “It’s welcome and should be celebrated, but we shouldn’t be declaring victory yet.”

Some 2 million Pennsylvanians cast votes by mail this fall, and about 88% of the mail ballots that were sent out were returned by voters.

“Voter education isn’t something you do once, it’s something you always have to do,” Schmidt said. “And any ballot that is rejected — a single ballot in Pennsylvania that’s been rejected — feels like a failure to anyone who really cares about democracy.”

Pennsylvania’s top elections official, Secretary of State Kathy Boockvar, is touting the state’s progress in reducing the rejection rate of mail-in ballots. In a recent statement, Boockvar highlighted the improvements made to the mail ballot process, which have led to a significant decrease in the number of rejected ballots.

According to Boockvar, the rejection rate for mail-in ballots dropped from 1.5% in the 2020 election to just 0.2% in the 2021 primary election. This improvement is attributed to a number of factors, including enhanced voter education efforts, improved ballot design, and increased communication with voters about potential issues with their ballots.

Boockvar emphasized the importance of ensuring that every eligible voter’s ballot is counted, and praised the efforts of election officials and volunteers in achieving this goal. She also encouraged voters to familiarize themselves with the mail ballot process and to carefully follow all instructions to ensure their vote is counted.

Overall, the progress made in reducing the rejection rate of mail-in ballots in Pennsylvania is a positive development that reflects the state’s commitment to fair and accessible elections. As the state continues to refine its mail ballot procedures, voters can have confidence that their voices will be heard in future elections.

Pennsylvania elections chief, Secretary of State Kathy Boockvar, has recently announced significant progress in reducing the mail ballot rejection rate in the state. In a press conference held earlier this week, Boockvar highlighted the efforts made by the state to address issues that have historically led to high rejection rates for mail-in ballots.

According to Boockvar, Pennsylvania has implemented new procedures and guidelines to ensure that mail-in ballots are properly completed and submitted in accordance with state laws. These measures include providing voters with clear instructions on how to fill out their ballots, as well as implementing enhanced verification processes to confirm voter identities.

As a result of these efforts, Boockvar reported that the rejection rate for mail-in ballots in the recent primary election was significantly lower than in previous elections. This improvement is a promising sign for the upcoming general election, as mail-in voting is expected to play a crucial role in ensuring that all eligible voters can safely participate in the democratic process.

Boockvar emphasized that the state will continue to work towards further reducing the mail ballot rejection rate and ensuring that every vote is counted. She also encouraged voters to familiarize themselves with the guidelines for mail-in voting to help prevent any issues that could lead to their ballot being rejected.

Overall, Pennsylvania’s progress in reducing the mail ballot rejection rate is a positive development that underscores the state’s commitment to upholding the integrity of its elections. With the general election rapidly approaching, voters can feel confident that their mail-in ballots will be processed efficiently and accurately.

  • 1/30 Preview – Offensive Progress The Focus + Back-To-Back, Doughty/Clarke, 5-on-3’s

WHO: Los Angeles Kings (26-16-6) @ Tampa Bay Lightning (26-20-3)
    WHAT: 2024-25 Regular-Season Game
WHEN: Thursday, January 30 @ 4:00 PM Pacific
WHERE: Amalie Arena – Tampa Bay, FL
HOW TO FOLLOW: VIDEO: FanDuel Sports Network – AUDIO – ESPN LA App – TWITTER: @dooleylak & @lakings

TODAY’S MATCHUP: Quick turnaround for the Kings, as they visit the Tampa Bay Lightning to complete a back-to-back set in Florida.

HEAD-TO-HEAD: The Kings skated to a 2-1 victory over Tampa Bay earlier this month back in Los Angeles.

Defenseman Mikey Anderson and forward Adrian Kempe scored in the victory, with Kempe burying the game-winning goal in the third period.

Since joining the Kings in 2021, forward Phillip Danault has led the team with four goals and six points versus the Lightning, including three points from three games here in Tampa Bay. Dating back to his time in Montreal, Danault led the Canadiens against Tampa Bay in scoring as well, with seven points (2-5-7) from nine games played.

KINGS VITALS: With the back-to-back, the Kings did not hold a morning skate in advance of tonight’s game.

With goaltender Darcy Kuemper getting the nod last night in Florida, expect goaltender David Rittich to start tonight’s game against the Lightning. Rittich has five career appearances against Tampa Bay, with a record of 0-2-1, a .862 save percentage and a 4.22 goals-against aveage.

For reference, here is how the team lined up last night in Florida –

Biggest question facing the Kings lineup decision tonight – will Drew Doughty go back-to-back?

Certainly didn’t have any training wheels on Game 1, playing just shy of 24 minutes in his return to the lineup. I certainly won’t be the guy suggesting that Drew Doughty can’t or won’t do something. There’s also defenseman Brandt Clarke, who missed his first game of the season last night in Tampa Bay. Feels like a reset opportunity for a young player. Expecting him back in the lineup soon.

Should the Kings look to make any additional changes, defensemen Kyle Burroughs and Andreas Englund are also available, along with Clarke.

LIGHTNING VITALS: Similar to the Kings, Tampa Bay enters tonight’s game with four losses from their last five games played.

Per Gabby Shirley of FanDuel Sports Network Florida, here’s how the Lightning aligned on Tuesday in Chicago –

Tampa Bay has two Kings draft picks currently in their lineup – defenseman Erik Cernak and forward Mikey Eyssimont.

Forwards Nikita Kucherov and Zemgus Girgensons did not practice yesterday, both designated with a “body maintenance” day. Both players are expected to play tonight against the Kings. Kucherov has nine goals and 23 points in his career versus Los Angeles.

Storyline Of The Day – Scoring Goals
Here are two quotes from last night’s post-game interviews. One from Drew Doughty, one from Warren Foegele.

Doughty – We’ve got to get more bodies to the net for sure. I know that’s the old saying, but we had some shots at the end, just floaters through that we didn’t get any sticks on, any bodies in front. Got to do that and it’s just about bearing down.

Foegele – At the end of the day, we’ve got to get bodies to the net and then we’ve got to get the puck to the net when guys are there. They kind of go hand in hand. It’s just winning battles at the end of the day, that’s what hockey is really about, winning 50/50’s. Pucks to the net, bodies to the net, don’t get beat up the ice, things like that. The margin is so close.

    Pretty lockstep.

I thought Foegele had an interesting take, beyond this quote. He used a different word than the standard lines we’ve heard. In a separate quote from the one above, he said “possession.” What he meant was that while he wants to see the Kings get shots and get second opportunities, simply shooting it for the sake of shooting it isn’t working. That’s what Doughty was talking about. The power play has certainly been guilty of not shooting enough and you can’t circle the zone endlessly without any output. There’s a balance there.

Few goaltenders will get beat regularly on clean shots from the outside. And, let’s face it, the Kings don’t have a ton of guys who are scoring from those areas on a regular basis, especially right now. I think sometimes, though, the notion of keeping things simple could have the wrong consequence. I’ve preached it and while there’s merit to it, I was intrigued by Foegele’s comments as well. Possession in the offensive zone is important too, even if it’s just an extra cycle to get an extra body outside the crease. Both Doughty and Foegele think the team can do a better job of taking the right shots, the shots through traffic and the shots that lead to second and third chances and opportunities. That’s how this team can score.

There weren’t too many of those in Florida and that’ll have to change to get any kind of result tonight in Tampa Bay. There haven’t been very many this entire month, obviously. The Kings are last in the NHL in goals scored in January.

It’s not one thing that will get the Kings out of this. Will take a heck of a lot more than that. Kings can’t survive slumps offensively from 8-10 forwards and the defensive core at the same time. So, they need multiple players to get one. Then two. And build. Not going to be easy and the schedule tonight isn’t going to help. Time to dig in and work.

    3 To Watch For –
    – On Brandt Clarke, my understanding is that this is a bit of a reset for him. Jordan Spence had one early in the season. Alex Laferriere had one last year. If I recall back to when he was a younger player, I believe Adrian Kempe had one as well.

Seemed to work out well on all fronts there. Ultimately, I don’t know how Clarke will respond. I’d like to think he’ll bounce back exactly as Spence did back in October and how Laferriere did last season. For both of those players, it was one game out and right back in.

Yesterday, Jim Hiller spoke about how Clarke was thrust into Top-4 minutes pretty early in the season. At first, he handled it exceptionally well and Hiller reiterated that yesterday. He’s played a lot of good hockey. The grind has gotten tougher of late. It’s hard to think about this being Clarke’s first season in the NHL on a full-time basis. He’s never gone through this. A small dip in his play isn’t all that crazy.

I don’t know yet if he will play tonight. Will ask pre-game for sure. Hoping, certainly, that we see this in the long run as the same blip on the radar as many others have.

    – Joke’s on us with Doughty, eh?

23:51 in his first game of the season. Played an extended shift late in the third period with the Kings down 2-0. He played on the first power-play unit and had 3 shot attempts. Only saw a bit of PK duty and admitted that he doesn’t fully know the system yet and it’ll take time for him to become familiar and contribute there. It’s also more taxing, so Doughty stayed off the kill by design.

So, will he play again tonight? I’m done making predictions. I would’ve taken the under on 23 minutes and I’d have lost my money. Immediately after the game, Doughty seemed to be feeling pretty good. Not always the same the next day, though. Again, will speak with Hiller at the rink in a few hours and will get a firm update on Doughty’s status and second-night availability.

    – A troubling statistic, beyond the offense – The Kings have given up a 5-on-3 goal in back-to-back games. More troubling is that three of the four penalties committed have come in the offensive zone.

Warren Foegele took the lone defensive-zone penalty last night and took accountability post game for putting the team in a bad spot. I didn’t request to talk with Trevor Lewis but I’d imagine he’d have done the same. The penalty on Lewis was in the offensive zone, 200 feet from danger. Can’t take that penalty. Foegele’s came after the Kings nearly survived with a strong kill. Five seconds later, 1-0 was 2-0.

Right now, the margin for error is razor thin. I don’t know about you all, but the goal to make it 2-0 felt like a backbreaker. Hard to see three goals in the third period right now for the Kings, especially against Florida. No excuses on those types of penalties and when goals are as hard to come by as they are right now, can’t have those types of lapses.

Kings and Lightning, second to last of five straight here on the road. Time to turn things around.

As we gear up for the next game on 1/30, the focus for the team has been on offensive progress. With a string of tough losses, the coaching staff and players are honing in on improving their scoring opportunities and execution.

One key area of focus has been the back-to-back games that the team will face this weekend. With limited rest between games, maintaining energy levels and staying sharp will be crucial for success.

Another storyline to watch is the matchup between star defensemen Doughty and Clarke. Both players have been key contributors on the blue line, and their battle on the ice is sure to be intense.

Additionally, the team has been working on their 5-on-3 power play opportunities. With the advantage of two extra skaters, converting on these chances can be a game-changer. Look for the team to capitalize on these situations and make the most of their power play opportunities.

As the team prepares for the upcoming game, the focus remains on offensive progress and taking advantage of key opportunities. Stay tuned for an exciting matchup on 1/30!

  • Kel’el Ware-Bam Adebayo a work in progress for Miami Heat

MIAMI — And now the reality check.

Because the next big thing for the Miami Heat remains a work in progress, as evidenced by the pounding Erik Spoelstra’s team received in Wednesday night’s 126-106 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers at Kaseya Center.

The thought when Spoelstra finally relented and moved 7-foot rookie Kel’el Ware into the starting lineup alongside 6-9 Bam Adebayo five games ago was the Heat no longer would be a team getting sand kicked in their faces by bigger opponents, no longer to be dominated on second-chance points and points in the paint.

And then arrived quality opposition in the form of the Eastern Conference leaders, and, so . . .  sand was kicked in their faces by bigger opponents, and the Heat were dominated on second-chance points and points in the paint.

“We’re a bigger front line and this needs to be corrected,” Spoelstra said. “There are no excuses now. We have to be a lot more physical and purposeful on the glass.”

The numbers were evidence of the ire, with the Heat outscored 68-38 by the Cavaliers in the paint, 20-10 on second-chance points, with an overall 47-35 rebounding deficit.

It was a reminder that for all of Ware’s length, it also is 20-year-old length, leaving last June’s No. 15 pick out of Indiana very much a work in progress.

“I mean, we’re still working through things, trying to figure out how we can obviously get better through these ups and downs and be more consistent,” said Adebayo, who closed Wednesday with 21 points and nine rebounds, to only five points and nine rebounds from Ware. “Obviously the second-chance points is a big problem that we’ve got to hone in on, but it’s not just ’cause we got two bigs out there you think you’re going to fix a problem.

“You’re trying to add pressure to a rookie that just really started getting his minutes and started to get his feet wet. So I don’t really look at it in that sense. But we do, collectively, as a group, have to get better in rebounding.”

In addition to the issues on the glass, the matchup against the Cavaliers’ defense exposed the work-in-progress element of the Heat’s dual-big approach, with a lack of proper spacing suffocating the offense.

“That’s what we’re talking about a lot,” said guard Terry Rozier, who along with Tyler Herro led the Heat with 22 points Wednesday night. “We’re watching a lot of film, seeing how we can feed off one another.”

The goal, Rozier said, is something closer to what the Cavaliers feature with dual big men in their lineup, with Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley both closing with double-doubles on Wednesday night.

“Obviously you see their two bigs. I think that’s what we’re trying to get to with our offense, where they’re playing well off one another,” Rozier said. “It’ll happen, it’ll happen. We’ve got two bigs that space the floor. Sometimes it can be a problem. Sometimes it can be helpful. We’ve just got to find that.”

For all the hype, the Heat stand 2-3 with Ware as a starter.

“It’s a work in progress,” Adebayo said. “It’s been a small sample size, so you’ve got to work through it. Everybody’s going to point that out, because it’s like, ‘Oh, that’s the glaring,’ because that’s supposed to be the fix. There’s going to be ups and downs to this.”

With Wednesday decidedly down, as the Heat dropped back to .500, at 23-23, with a four-game trip up next, starting Saturday against the San Antonio Spurs.

It was against the Spurs two weeks ago that sparked the decision by Spoelstra to move forward with Ware as starter.

Before that game, the acceptance was of Ware as a work in progress. Now the ante has been raised with Ware as a starter.

Kel’el Ware-Bam Adebayo: A Work in Progress for Miami Heat

As the Miami Heat continue to strive for success in the NBA, one player who has shown immense potential is Kel’el Ware-Bam Adebayo. Adebayo, the 6’9″ power forward/center, has quickly become a key player for the Heat, providing strong defense, rebounding, and scoring in the paint.

However, Adebayo is still a work in progress. At just 24 years old, he has plenty of room for growth and development. His offensive skills are improving, but he still has room to expand his scoring repertoire and become a more consistent threat on that end of the floor.

Defensively, Adebayo has already established himself as one of the top big men in the league. His ability to guard multiple positions, protect the rim, and switch onto guards has been crucial for the Heat’s success. However, there is always room for improvement, and Adebayo can continue to refine his defensive skills and become an even more dominant force on that end of the floor.

Off the court, Adebayo’s work ethic and dedication to improving his game are evident. He is constantly working on his craft, whether it be in the weight room, on the court, or studying film. His willingness to put in the work and strive for greatness is what sets him apart from other players.

As Adebayo continues to develop and grow, he has the potential to become a perennial All-Star and a key piece for the Miami Heat for years to come. With his combination of size, skill, and work ethic, the sky is the limit for Kel’el Ware-Bam Adebayo.
