  • Projected AP Top 25 after Ohio State suffers fir

After a week that saw a number of shakeups in the women’s college basketball AP poll, this past week was much quieter. Only one team ranked in the top 12 suffered a loss all week and of the 10 losses by ranked teams, half came against teams ranked in the top 10.

It should mean that there isn’t a ton of movement except at the bottom of the Top 25, where a pair of Big 12 teams account for 30 percent of the ranked losses this week and half the losses to unranked foes.

Below is a projection of what Monday’s AP Top 25 poll will look like.

    1. UCLA
    2. South Carolina
    3. Notre Dame
    4. USC
    5. LSU
    6. UConn
    7. Texas
    8. Maryland
    9. TCU
    10. Kansas State
    11. Kentucky
    12. Ohio State
    13. North Carolina
    14. Duke
    15. Oklahoma
    16. Tennessee
    17. Georgia Tech
    18. Cal
    19. West Virginia
    20. NC State
    21. Alabama
    22. Michigan State
    23. Michigan
    24. Minnesota
    25. Creighton

UCLA will almost certainly remain at No. 1 because the Bruins are undefeated, but it’s more than fair to wonder if the Bruins are actually the best team in the country or not.

For my money, I lean toward UCLA being a close second to the real best team, South Carolina.

It was a banner week for the Gamecocks. Not only did head coach Dawn Staley sign a big-money extension, but the team also ha two dominant wins over ranked opponents, beating Alabama and Oklahoma.

The win over Oklahoma was particularly impressive. I don’t really think there were any concerns that SC would lose the game or anything like that, but the Sooners offense is always a big test for a defense. South Carolina passed the test easily, holding Oklahoma to 60 points while scoring 101 of their own. It was the fewest points score by Oklahoma since January 2024, when the team scored 60 in a win over Kansas.

Ohio State’s football team plays for a national championship on Monday night, but it’s women’s basketball team won’t have a great Monday as the Buckeyes fall from ninth to 12th.

Sunday’s loss to Penn State dropped Ohio State from the list of undefeated teams, which now stands at just two: UCLA and LSU.

It never really felt like the Buckeyes were going to keep the undefeated streak going. They’ve yet to face a ranked team, though that might change today if Michigan moves into the AP Top 25. A seven-point win against the Wolverines is the highlight so far this season.

Against Penn State on Sunday, the Buckeyes just couldn’t get the offense going. Cotie McMahon and Chance Gray combined for 37 of the team’s 59 points, but Gray was just 6-for-18 from the field and 4-for-12 from deep.

The Cowgirls didn’t last long in the AP Top 25. After debuting at No. 24 last week, Oklahoma State will drop out this week after suffering a shocking loss to Houston.

The Cougars are arguably the worst power conference team in the country. The team ranks 221st in the country in net rating, last of all teams in the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12 and SEC. It’s been a nightmare of a season for the Coogs, but somehow they beat a ranked Oklahoma State team.

It’s hard to make sense of what happened there. Houston won the second quarter 21-10 and the third quarter 23-14 to build a huge lead. Oklahoma State clawed back in the fourth quarter but came up just short, losing by three.

One big issue was that the Cowgirls shot just 28.6% from deep. On the season, the team ranks 14th in the nation in three-point field goal percentage, but it went cold in this one, which certainly contributed to the shock defeat.

I don’t think the voters can justify ranking Utah and Oklahoma State after how this week went, but who takes their place?

Michigan makes sense for one of those spots. The team lost four of five between Dec. 17 and Jan. 8, but all the losses were to ranked teams. Since then, the team has three wins in a row, all by double digits. The ship looks righted.

As for the final spot, there’s not really a super strong contender for it, so my guess is enough voters land on Creighton in their final spot. The Bluejays are 15-3 and have won six in a row. After a 1-2 start to the season, the team’s only other loss was to No. 1 UCLA, so there’s definitely a case here.

But Creighton plays UConn this week, so entering the rankings is sure to be short-lived. Looking ahead, Nebraska might ultimately be the team that emerges as the best of the currently unranked teams. Keep an eye on how the Huskers do when they face Ohio State next Sunday.

    st loss of the season

Following Ohio State’s first loss of the season to Oregon, the projected AP Top 25 rankings are sure to see some major shakeups. With the Buckeyes falling from their previous spot at No. 3, it’s anyone’s guess as to who will rise to take their place in the rankings. Stay tuned for the official release of the updated AP Top 25 tomorrow to see where your favorite teams land after this weekend’s action-packed games.

  • PROJECTED LINEUP: Oilers at Canucks

VANCOUVER, BC – The Edmonton Oilers will go with 11 forwards and seven defencemen on Saturday night in the final game of their three-game road trip at Rogers Arena against the Vancouver Canucks.

Head Coach Kris Knoblauch confirmed they’ll add a defenceman and take a forward out tonight to help deal with the Canucks’ ability to attack off the rush, but didn’t reveal which forward will be coming out of the lineup. Defenceman Josh Brown will be the seventh defenceman.

Defenceman John Klingberg was signed to a one-year contract on Friday afternoon but hasn’t joined the team on the road in Vancouver. The 32-year-old is travelling to Edmonton today before he’s expected to practice for the first time with the Oilers on Monday morning and begin working his way back up to NHL speed.

“He hasn’t played for a long time,” Knoblauch said. “He hasn’t had a training camp. He’s been skating for an extremely long period of time, but to get up to NHL speed, it’ll take a while. So we don’t have a timeline when he’ll play.”

Edmonton’s official lineup will be confirmed during warm-ups before tonight’s 8:07 pm MT puck drop.

  • 49ers projected to lose 880-yard breakout star to rival Seahawks in free agency

The San Francisco 49ers had a dreadful season, but there were still some silver linings.

Injuries decimated the 49ers’ offense throughout the year, helping sink them from Super Bowl participants to last-place finishers in the NFC West. Running back Christian McCaffrey, the reigning Offensive Player of the Year, missed all but four of San Francisco’s games.

While missing McCaffrey was a net negative for the 49ers’ offense, backup running back Jordan Mason got the chance to shine. And shine he did, putting up 880 scrimmage yards in 12 games before succumbing to injury himself.

Now that Mason’s rookie contract is up, the former undrafted free agent will be looking to cash in coming off his strong season. Could a 49ers division rival lure the 25-year-old out of the Bay Area?

On Tuesday, Jonathan Eig of FanSided speculated that the Seattle Seahawks, whose starting running back Kenneth Walker III also dealt with injury issues in 2024, could be a top fit for Mason this spring in free agency.

“Based on his strong 2024, Mason should draw some interest though he is not likely to carry a huge price tag,” Eig wrote. “He might constitute an upgrade over [Zach] Charbonnet and develop more of a complementary, job-sharing operation with Walker.”

“Walker would still be the lead back, but Mason could spell him quite a bit, saving wear and tear on Walker so that he could hopefully last an entire season.”

Seattle finished the season at 10-7, but lost the tiebreaker to the Los Angeles Rams in the division and missed the playoffs by a single game. Walker can be a star when he’s healthy, but he’s not McCaffrey, so Mason would still likely have more opportunity in the Seattle offense than he would if he stayed with the 49ers.

For Mason, it all comes down to which teams value him the highest, because he’s only made $2.6 million through his first three NFL seasons. If Seattle thinks he’s worth more than the 49ers do, it makes complete sense that he would choose to head there.

More NFL: 49ers named ‘landing spot’ for $160 million quarterback to replace Brock Purdy

The San Francisco 49ers may be facing a tough loss this offseason as their breakout star wide receiver, who racked up an impressive 880 yards last season, is projected to sign with their NFC West rival, the Seattle Seahawks.

With free agency looming, rumors are swirling that the Seahawks are prepared to make a lucrative offer to lure the young playmaker away from the 49ers. Despite the efforts of the San Francisco front office to retain their star player, it appears that the allure of joining a division rival and potentially playing alongside superstar quarterback Russell Wilson may be too enticing to pass up.

Losing a dynamic talent like this would undoubtedly be a blow to the 49ers’ offense, as they would have to find a way to replace his production and playmaking abilities. However, with the unpredictability of free agency, there is still a chance that the 49ers could find a way to keep their breakout star in the Bay Area.

As the offseason progresses, all eyes will be on whether the 49ers can convince their star player to stay or if he will ultimately decide to take his talents to Seattle. Stay tuned for updates as the free agency frenzy unfolds.

  • Jets Projected To Pursue $180 Million Pro Bowl Quarterback

The New York Jets have many questions to answer right now.

New York had a tough 2024 season but actually is one of the more interesting teams in football right now. Although the Jets aren’t in the playoffs, they certainly have a chance to turn things around. The Jets won just five games in 2024 but have more talent on the roster than the typical five-win team.

If the Jets can make sound decisions with the head coach and general manager searches, it will just make things easier in 2025. Another decision will be about the future of Aaron Rodgers. This is going to be the one that is discussed throughout the offseason the most.

He had an up-and-down season and there’s merit to both sides of the discussion about whether to bring him back. We are not the general manager of the Jets, though.

Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox made a list of the top players who could be traded this offseason with potential landing spots. He had Atlanta Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins as the second-best player who could be traded and projected the Jets as one of the top landing spots for him.

“Kirk Cousins’ spot on this list may seem high, given the late struggles he had before being pulled for rookie Michael Penix Jr.,” Know said. “However, it’s worth noting that Cousins popped up on the injury report with shoulder and elbow ailments in mid-November, just as his slide was beginning. Neither Cousins nor the Atlanta Falcons made noise about the injuries, but considering how well Cousins was playing in September and October, it’s fair to wonder if he was healthy down the stretch…

“While Cousins’ situation includes a lot of “ifs,” he’s likely to be this year’s budget veteran quarterback a la Russell Wilson in 2024. Through that lens, a couple of teams appear to be logical landing spots…The Jets could be interested in Cousins under similar terms. If Rodgers departs, New York will need someone to guide its offense through the 2025 season. Potential Suitors: Cleveland Browns, New York Jets.”

Cousins could be one of the better quarterbacks available this offseason, but will the Jets pursue him? He spurned them in the past so it’s unknown. There surely will be more speculation about him throughout the offseason if Rodgers decides to leave, but it does seem unlikely on the outside looking in. He landed a four-year, $180 million deal with Atlanta and even if the Jets don’t have to pay the majority of it, it still seems unlikely.

More NFL: Jets Complete List Of Free Agents After Tumultuous 2024 Season

The New York Jets are reportedly setting their sights on a $180 million Pro Bowl quarterback this offseason. With their current quarterback situation up in the air, the Jets are looking to make a splash in free agency and land a top-tier signal caller.

Rumors have been circulating that the Jets are willing to break the bank to secure the services of a proven quarterback who can lead their offense to new heights. With a young and talented roster in place, adding a dynamic quarterback could be the missing piece for the Jets to become a contender in the AFC.

While no specific names have been mentioned, it’s clear that the Jets are serious about upgrading the quarterback position and are prepared to spend big to make it happen. Keep an eye on the Jets this offseason as they look to make a major move at the most important position on the field.

  • Projected Lineup: January 17 vs. Vegas

RALEIGH, N.C. – After a rare non-back-to-back night off on Wednesday, Pyotr Kochetkov will likely be the last line of defense on Friday when the Carolina Hurricanes take on the Vegas Golden Knights.

Kochetkov was on the wrong side of a 3-2 overtime loss to the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday, his most recent start. On the season, the 25-year-old is 16-9-2 with a 2.54 goals against average and a .901 save percentage.

Expected to back him up tonight is Frederik Andersen, who was activated from injured reserve this morning. This indicates he is cleared to return to game action following knee surgery in November. The veteran’s next appearance will be a milestone one – his 500th NHL game.

In a corresponding move, Dustin Tokarski was assigned to the Chicago Wolves (AHL).

As for the cast of skaters, the team will not have any changes to the 18 they’ve been utilizing recently. Ty Smith remains the lone healthy extra.

  • Yankees Linked to Projected $66 Million Star in ‘Stunning Move’

    New York Yankees, Tanner Scott

    Getty

Aaron Boone signaling to change pitchers

Heading into spring training in February, the New York Yankees could still use a few pieces. Finding an infielder is the Yankees’ biggest need, but they could also use another arm or two in the bullpen. As constructed, a left-handed reliever would be an ideal move for the Yankees to make, and there just so happens to be an elite one on the market in Tanner Scott.

Scott, an All-Star in 2024, posted a 1.75 ERA last season with 84 strikeouts in 72.0 innings pitched. Adding him to a bullpen featuring Devin Williams and others would give the Yankees the best unit in baseball.

Ryan Garcia of Empire Sports Media examined ways for the Yankees to finish their offseason, writing why they should add Scott in a “stunning signing.”

“You have about $18 million of wiggle room? Spend it. The Yankees should not be looking at a weak American League as a reason to tread waters, they should view it as an opportunity to dominate on their way back to the World Series.

“If the Yankees offered Tanner Scott a three-year deal at $51 million with an opt-out after each season, they might be able to land his services, and there would be zero penalties outside of re-entering the Steve Cohen threshold,” Garcia wrote on January 14.

How Much Will Scott Get in Free Agency?

It’s a bit surprising that Scott remains on the market as of Jan. 14. The left-hander is arguably the best reliever in baseball, but he could be looking for a contract that teams aren’t willing to give out.

Some have predicted him to land as much as $20 million AAV, which would likely be something the New York Yankees don’t want to give him.

Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report has him taking home $66 million over four years, totaling $16.5 per season.

“Among the 286 pitchers who have logged at least 110 innings pitched—mostly starters, but a decent number of relievers—Scott’s 2.53 FIP since the beginning of 2023 ranks third in the majors, behind only Tarik Skubal (2.35) and Paul Skenes (2.44).

“That’s in spite of a 3.6 BB/9 rate that is kind of high for a closer, but also a whole lot better than the 5.8 mark he had posted across his first six seasons in the big leagues. Now that he seems to have his control under…well…control, he’s one of the best relievers out there, blowing just two saves in 2024 while racking up 22 saves and 11 holds,” Miller wrote on January 13.

AAV is the thing to watch for the Yankees, and $16.5 million could be doable if they get creative.

How Could the Yankees Land Scott?

If the New York Yankees are content with their offseason and only want to make marginal signings, that would take Scott off the market.

However, reports have indicated they want to trade Marcus Stroman and his $18 million salary for the 2025 season. Getting rid of his $18 million would give the Yankees more money, and while they might look to add to their lineup, that would be around what Scott should sign for.

Nick Deeds of MLB Trade Rumors wrote that the Yankees have other needs but could look to add Scott if they found a way to get off Stroman’s contract.

“The Yankees were reportedly in the mix earlier this winter, though their addition of closer Devin Williams, current need for an infielder, and reportedly limited budget space going forward could take them out of the running. On the other hand, if they can trade Marcus Stroman, that might make them more amenable to another splash in the ’pen,” Deeds wrote on January 10.

Unsuccessful in their attempts to trade Stroman, the Yankees have to hope someone will trade for him before the campaign.

Jon Conahan covers the NBA and NFL for Heavy.com. Since 2019, his sports coverage has appeared at Sports Illustrated, oddschecker, ClutchPoints and Sportskeeda. More about Jon Conahan

The New York Yankees have been linked to a projected $66 million star in what is being described as a “stunning move” by industry insiders. The powerhouse team is reportedly making a bold play for this highly sought-after player, who is expected to command a record-breaking contract.

Rumors have been swirling for weeks about the Yankees’ interest in this star player, with fans and analysts alike speculating on the potential impact of such a high-profile signing. The team’s front office has remained tight-lipped about the negotiations, but sources close to the situation suggest that a deal could be imminent.

If the Yankees are able to secure the services of this projected $66 million star, it would undoubtedly shake up the landscape of the league and solidify their status as serious contenders for the upcoming season. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as details continue to emerge.

  • Canucks Projected To Reunite Lekkerimäki, Pettersson & DeBrusk Against The Kings

The Vancouver Canucks are switching up their forward lines ahead of their matchup against the L.A. Kings. While nothing is official until the puck drops, one of the projected trios will feature Jonathan Lekkerimäki skating beside Elias Pettersson and Jake DeBrusk. Thursday’s matchup will be Lekkerimäki’s 11th game with Vancouver this season, with the 20-year-old recording two goals and three points so far this season.

Report Shows Canucks Players Are Among Highest Taxed In The NHL

While Lekkerimäki hasn’t been in the NHL for the majority of the season, it is surprising that it took this long for Rick Tocchet to reunite the trio. Lekkerimäki, Pettersson, and DeBrusk were among the standout lines during training camp, but come the preseason, they were split up. So far this season, Lekkerimäki has spent the majority of his time beside J.T. Miller and most recently has featured in the Canucks bottom six. According to Natural Stat Trick, Lekkerimäki has played just 1:39 with Pettersson and DeBrusk, with the trio holding a 2-0 shots advantage so far this season.

Vancouver’s offence has really struggled over the past few games. Since the start of 2025, the Canucks have 12 goals in seven games and have picked up just two wins. One of the big reasons for Vancouver’s struggles is that their top players aren’t producing, as Pettersson, Miller, DeBrusk, and Boeser have combined for five goals over the past seven games.

Related: Canucks DeBrusk Opens 2024 Training Camp Beside Pettersson & Lekkerimäki

As for Lekkerimäki, his focus heading into tonight’s game should be getting as many pucks on net as possible. The 20-year-old is known for his shot, which is why he has 12 goals in 21 AHL games this season. If Lekkerimäki can find open space and test the Kings goaltender as much as possible, it should help provide a spark for a Canucks team that is desperate for a win.

The Vancouver Canucks are projected to reunite their dynamic trio of Jonatan Lekkerimäki, Elias Pettersson, and Jake DeBrusk in their upcoming game against the Los Angeles Kings.

This line combination has proven to be highly effective in the past, with Lekkerimäki’s speed and playmaking ability complementing Pettersson’s skill and vision, while DeBrusk adds a physical presence and goal-scoring touch.

Browns Projected to Swap Out Nick Chubb for 30-TD Superstar RB

Getty Running back Nick Chubb of the Cleveland Browns. There is not a ton of certainty surrounding the Cleveland Browns as they approach the offseason, though the fate of running back Nick Chubb appears almost sealed. Chubb’s year ended three weeks ago against the Kansas City Chiefs by way of a broken foot. The injury marked the second consecutive campaign of Chubb’s that injury derailed after he blew out his knee against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 2 of the 2023 season. That injury could have ended the running back’s tenure in Cleveland had he not been willing to renegotiate…

Chubb, known for his explosive running style and exceptional talent, has been a cornerstone of the Browns’ offense since he was drafted in 2018. However, the allure of a player with the ability to score 30 touchdowns in a single season has proven too tempting for the Browns’ front office to resist.

    Betting line: Wisconsin -5.5

    Projected Starting Five (Wisconsin)

Player to Watch: Despite struggling offensively, shooting a career-worst 32.5 percent from the floor, Klesmit leads Wisconsin with 38 assists and has a 2.4 assist-to-turnover ratio, the second-best mark on the team.

    Projected Starting Five (Iowa)

Player to watch: Dix is averaging 15 points and 4.6 rebounds, shooting 56.6 percent from the field (43-of-76) with 13 3-point field goals over his last seven games. Dix scored 17 points on 8-for-11 shooting in last February’s win over Wisconsin.

    Series Notes

Wisconsin had its four-game winning streak in the series snapped in last February’s overtime loss in Iowa City.

The Badgers have won the last three meetings in Madison. The Hawkeyes have won three games in Madison during the McCaffery era (2011-12, 2016-17, 2020-21).

Crowl scored 22 points in the last meeting against Iowa, registering career-bests in field goals (13) and field goal attempts (15). In five career games against Iowa, the senior averages 13.6 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game, all while shooting 64.3% from the field.

    Wisconsin Notes

The Badgers finished the nonconference schedule 10-1, losing only at No.5 Marquette. The 10 wins were the most for Wisconsin out of conference since going 11-2 in 2016-17. UW beat four Power-Five conference teams in the nonconference (Arizona, Butler, Pittsburgh, and UCF), its most since 2018-19.

Wisconsin leads the NCAA in free-throw shooting at 85.1 percent, well ahead of the Big Ten record of 81.8 percent that Wisconsin set in 2010-11.

The Badgers are averaging 15.0 assists per game, their most since 1993-94. With UW ranking 18th nationally in turnovers (9.6), the program has never had a season averaging over 15 assists with fewer than 10 turnovers per game.

UW is taking 27 three-point shots per game and making 8.8 three-pointers per game, the most in both categories for the Badgers since the inception of the three-point line in 1986-87.

With a career record of 104-72, Greg Gard is one of 23 Big Ten coaches to register 100 conference wins. He’s the sixth-fastest Big Ten coach to 100 wins in the last 50 years. Gard’s overall record is 196-110 (.641).

    Iowa Notes

Friday’s game at Wisconsin is just Iowa’s second true road game of the season. The Hawkeyes had a look at the buzzer in an 85-83 loss at Michigan on Dec. 7. Iowa is 2-1 in three neutral site games this season.

The Hawkeyes have shot better than 50 percent from the floor in three straight contests and in seven games this season. Iowa shot a season-high 62.7 percent in its victory over New Orleans. Iowa is unbeaten this season when shooting at least 50 percent from the field.

The Hawkeyes have made at least eight 3-point field goals in 12 games, including 10+ in seven contests. Iowa made 18 in the win over Southern — the most since 2022 — and 14 against New Orleans. Iowa is second in the Big Ten (23rd nationally), averaging 10.5 per game.

Iowa is leading the Big Ten in assists (20.2, second in NCAA) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.98, fourth in NCAA). The team has had 20+ assists in six games.

Iowa has held 11 of its 13 opponents under 50 percent shooting (and two under 40 percent), has forced at least 18 turnovers in six games, and has held four opponents under 70 points.

    Prediction

Wisconsin’s home game against Iowa tonight might be the hottest ticket in town for those wanting to see offensive fireworks.

The Badgers and Hawkeyes are both inside the top 20 in KenPom’s adjusted offensive efficiency ratings and ranked outside the top 75 in adjusted defensive efficiency.

Iowa ranks second nationally in scoring (89.7) while KenPom has them ranked in the top 30 in effective field goals percentage (59.0%), offensive turnover percentage (13.6%), 2-point percentage (60.2%) and 3-point percentage (38.3%). A lot of the offense stems from transition offense, another stat where the Hawkeyes are among the national leaders (Iowa’s 17.54 fast-break points per game has them ranked ninth).

Wisconsin’s transition defense has been hit-and-miss. The Badgers allowed double-digit fast-break points to Michigan (19), Arizona (12), and Butler (12) but held Marquette (6) and Illinois (4) in check.

Last February at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, Iowa converted 52.6 percent of its shots, including 26 of 43 inside the arc (60.5 percent) and 24 of 30 (80 percent) from the line.

“Having a first game back that requires (us to be good with transition defense) is a challenge,” Gard said.

There are multiple pieces that make Iowa work. Dix is producing in his starting role by shooting 53.4 percent from the floor and Harding used his experience of backing up Tony Freeman last season to pressure defenses by making smart decisions with Iowa’s transition offense (76 assists, 29 turnovers).

The Hawkeyes are still empowered by Freeman, who leads them in scoring (17.1), rebounds (6.5) and blocks (22). He is the only Hawkeye to reach double figures in every game he has played. McCaffery said Freeman will play tonight after missing Monday’s game against New Hampshire with an ankle injury. The Hawkeyes didn’t appear to miss him, as their 45 field goals against UNH were the most under McCaffery.

“Owen is a great player for them with shooters all around him,” Crowl said. “They play really fast. They play hard. They switch things up on defense … He’s a great player. He runs the floor hard, which makes us as bigs have to run, too. They utilize him in a great way. He’s grown immensely from last year to this year.”

Wisconsin ranks among the bottom four of the Big Ten in field goal percentage (44.9) and 3-point percentage (32.5) but the Badgers have made it work by limiting turnovers and being proficient at the line, especially at home (86.9). If UW can continue tightening its defense, the Badgers should get a needed conference win tonight.

    Worgull’s Prediction: Wisconsin by nine

    Record: 10-3 (9-4 ATS)

Points off Prediction: 104 (8.0 per game)
