Braves projected for 1-year, $10 million reunion with fan-favorite by MLB insider

Who will take the ball for the Atlanta Braves this season after the departure of starting pitcher Max Fried?

Beyond Chris Sale, Reynaldo López, and Spencer Schwellenbach, the Braves don’t have obvious fits for the back end of the rotation. Spencer Strider will eventually rejoin the mix, but he’s expected to miss the start of the season after undergoing elbow surgery last April.

Charlie Morton, who will be 41 in 2025, has endeared himself to Braves fans over the last four seasons as a reliable veteran arm and valuable sounding board for young pitchers on the Atlanta staff.

Though his production tailed off in 2024, Morton could still have something left in the tank. And seeing as the Braves haven’t eagerly pursued more expensive free agents, he might be their best bet to shore up the rotation, especially before Strider’s return.

That seems to be the thinking of Braves beat reporter Mark Bowman of MLB.com. Bowman recently named Morton as the Braves’ “most realistic” potential free-agent signing for the rest of this winter.

“The Braves have understandably looked at other options, but they might eventually have to come back to the 41-year-old Charlie Morton, who has made it clear he’s open to pitching at least one more season,” Bowman said.

“Morton has been a key piece of Atlanta’s rotation each of the past four seasons, and he has aided the development of young starters like Spencer Strider and Spencer Schwellenbach. He might no longer be a frontline starter, but with a one-year deal worth approximately $10 million, he could provide the Braves some needed insurance in their rotation.”

Morton had a 4.19 ERA and 4.46 FIP in 30 starts for the Braves last season. He has a 45-34 record and 3.87 ERA since rejoining the Braves in 2021, and was a valuable member of the rotation that won that year’s World Series.

Is it worth a one-year deal for the Braves to add this aging star? That’s a question best asked of Alex Anthopoulos and the front office.

According to MLB insider sources, the Atlanta Braves are projected to have a reunion with a fan-favorite player on a 1-year, $10 million deal. The player, who has not been officially named yet, is expected to bring a significant boost to the team and add depth to their roster.

Fans have been buzzing with excitement at the prospect of this reunion, as the player in question has always been a beloved member of the Braves organization. Stay tuned for official confirmation and more details as they become available! #BravesReunion #MLBInsiderNews

  • Ex-Red Sox All-Star Projected To Land 2-Year, $29 Million Deal

Ex-Red Sox All-Star Projected To Land 2-Year, $29 Million Deal

The free agent market has slowed down, but there are plenty of players who should make big contributions to teams in 2025.

Things have slowed down around the holidays but there are some very good players available, including some former members of the Boston Red Sox. One player who surely will land a solid deal at some point will be former Red Sox All-Star closer Kenley Jansen.

There doesn’t seem to be any chance he will be back in Boston in 2025, but some contender looking for bullpen help will give him a chance. He was great for the Red Sox last year and had a 3.29 ERA across 54 appearances. Jansen had a 62-to-20 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 54 2/3 innings pitched and racked up 27 saves.

The free agent reliever market specifically has moved at a snail’s pace this offseason. Boston has made a big move by Aroldis Chapman, but most of the top relievers still are available. Other hurlers like Tanner Scott, Kirby Yates, and Jeff Hoffman still are available in free agency.

It’s unclear when Jansen will sign, but he should cash in once he does so. He had a two-year, $32 million deal with the Red Sox and Spotrac currently is projecting him to land another two-year deal but this time worth roughly $29 million.

That seems like a pretty fair price. A contender looking for a dependable closer should be all over this deal. That really isn’t much for an All-Star closer, especially when someone like Scott likely will get much more.

More MLB: Red Sox Urged To Reunite With $30 Million Ex-Boston Fan-Favorite

According to sources, former Red Sox All-Star player Xander Bogaerts is projected to sign a lucrative 2-year, $29 million deal with a new team in the upcoming offseason.

Bogaerts, who has been a key player for the Red Sox for several years, is expected to command a significant contract due to his impressive performance on the field. The 28-year-old shortstop has consistently been a top performer, earning multiple All-Star appearances and Silver Slugger awards during his time with the Red Sox.

While it will be sad to see Bogaerts leave Boston, it is clear that he will be a valuable addition to any team willing to pay top dollar for his services. Stay tuned for more updates on Bogaerts’ free agency negotiations and where he ultimately lands for the next chapter of his baseball career.

  • Alabama linebacker, a projected first-round pick, leaves ReliaQuest Bowl with injury

Alabama linebacker, a projected first-round pick, leaves ReliaQuest Bowl with injury

Alabama linebacker Jihaad Campbell exited Tuesday’s ReliaQuest Bowl against Michigan in the third quarter with an injury.

Campbell suffered the injury while making a tackle on a five-yard run by the Wolverines’ Jordan Marshall. Campbell walked off the field with medical staff and entered the medical tent. He was later shown with his left shoulder wrapped and his pads removed, and Alabama ruled him out for the remainder of the game.

He is a projected first-round pick by some outlets for the 2025 draft. ESPN’s Mel Kiper last week rated Campbell as the No. 20 overall prospect in the 2025 draft.

Campbell, a junior, has yet to officially declare for the draft. He chose to play in the ReliaQuest Bowl despite his solid draft stock, telling reporters earlier this month, “Hell yeah, I’m playing. I didn’t even think about that.”

Campbell led Alabama with 11 tackles before exiting Tuesday’s game. He was replaced by Jeremiah Alexander at linebacker next to Justin Jefferson, who replaced starter Deontae Lawson after a season-ending injury last month.

Alabama’s inside linebacker room remains in flux for next season. While Campbell is considered very likely to declare for the draft, Lawson has not yet revealed his plans while Jefferson is eligible to return for a fifth season. The Tide added Colorado transfer Nikhai Hill-Green through the portal earlier this month.

Alabama linebacker, a projected first-round pick, leaves ReliaQuest Bowl with injury

In a devastating turn of events for Alabama fans and NFL scouts alike, star linebacker, and projected first-round pick, was forced to leave the ReliaQuest Bowl with an injury.

The talented linebacker had been having a standout performance in the game, showcasing his speed, agility, and tackling ability. However, in the third quarter, he went down with what appeared to be a lower body injury.

As he was helped off the field by trainers, the entire stadium fell silent, knowing that his injury could have serious implications for his draft stock and future playing career.

Scouts and analysts had pegged him as one of the top linebackers in the upcoming draft class, with his ability to cover ground, make tackles in the open field, and rush the passer. Now, with this injury, his draft status is uncertain.

Fans and teammates alike are hoping for a speedy recovery for the talented linebacker, as he has the potential to be a game-changer at the next level. Stay tuned for updates on his condition and future prospects in the NFL draft.

  • Michigan football projected to land another transfer portal wide receiver

Michigan football projected to land another transfer portal wide receiver

Michigan football is getting ready to play its bowl game against Alabama but the Wolverines are also looking ahead to the 2025 season and trying to re-tool through the transfer portal.

Michigan has been busy already, adding a wide receiver, a quarterback, running back, offensive tackle, a couple of players in the secondary, and a defensive tackle. There are even two former five-stars in the mix from Alabama as Justice Haynes (RB) and Damon Paybe (DT) are part of the incoming transfer class.

There is still plenty of work to do though and the second wave of transfer portal additions is coming. Michigan football is already in a strong position for one commitment though. UConn wide reciever Skyler Bell visited the Wolverines before the dead period.

Bell played in his bowl game over the weekend, catching three passes for 77 yards in the Huskies’ 27-14 win over North Carolina. That only made me want Bell to be added to the Michigan football roster even more.

The 6-foot, 183-pounder caught 50 passes for the Huskies this season for 860 yards and five touchdowns. He averaged over 17 yards per reception but also had 68 receptions and six touchdowns in two seasons playing for Wisconsin.

Michigan football projected to land transfer WR

Bell has one year of eligibility left and would be an ideal addition. According to EJ Holland of The Wolverine, Michigan football is now the favorite. Holland projected Bell to the Wolverines on Monday with an On3 RPM prediction.

The dead period ends January 1st, which means players can take visits again. It will be interesting to see if Bell takes any other visits. If not, my guess is that he’ll be a Michigan Wolverine.

Michigan football is making moves in the transfer portal once again, this time targeting a wide receiver to add to their roster. With the departure of several key receivers this off-season, the Wolverines are looking to bolster their receiving corps with a new addition.

Rumors are swirling that Michigan is in talks with a highly-touted wide receiver who has entered the transfer portal. This potential addition would bring much-needed depth and talent to the Wolverines’ offense, giving quarterback Cade McNamara another weapon to work with.

Fans are buzzing with excitement at the prospect of landing this talented transfer, and many are hopeful that this move will help Michigan compete at a high level in the upcoming season. Stay tuned for more updates as this story develops.

  • Projected return dates this season for Lions injured players

Projected return dates this season for Lions injured players

After an injury-free game vs the Bears, Lions fans can focus on watching for players that are going to return to action. While there are three players who could make their return this week vs the 49ers – Graham Glasgow, Kalif Raymond, and Jalen Reeves-Maybin, I expect only Glasgow to return.

Here are the players that could return soon with my projected return date.

Graham Glasgow – Projected return this week vs 49ers

Glasgow missed last game with a knee issue, and also had an unspecified knee injury in week two for which he did not miss a game. It’s possible there is a chronic or recurrent injury going on.

After two NP’s (no practice) to start last week, he had a LP (limited practice) on Friday which is reassuring that the injury is short-term. Dan Campbell this Monday stated: “I see Graham coming back, I think he’s going to be ready to roll, he’s going to slip right back into left guard and start for us.”

With Christian Mahogany playing well at LG and the rest of the offensive line healthy, the Lions could decide to slow-play Glasgow’s return. But it sounds like Glasgow will be thrown back into action immediately.

Kalif Raymond – Projected return 1 to 3 weeks

Raymond injured his left foot on November 24 and was placed on IR. Initial reports were to expect him by the start of the playoffs. This is the first week he is eligible to return from IR, so hopefully we see his practice window open this week.

If his 21-day practice window opens this week, it’s possible he doesn’t medically need the entire window and could play vs the 49ers. This scenario happened with Ifeatu Melifonwu last week. If Raymond’s window does not open this week, that implies he is 3 or more weeks away. The playoffs start in 18 days.

    Jalen Reeves-Maybin – Projected return 2-3 weeks (week 18 or 1st-round playoffs)

Reeves-Maybin opened his 21-day practice window on December 19 which was not immediately after 4 weeks of IR. That suggests he will use most or all of his window before playing.

Currently, at only day 5 of his 21 day practice window, don’t expect him to be available vs the 49ers which will be on day 11. Expect him either the final regular season game vs the Vikings (day 17) or the playoffs.

Dan Campbell on Monday was vague and non-committal about Reeves-Maybin’s return date.

Alex Anzalone – Projected return 3 weeks (1st-round playoffs)

Anzalone fractured his forearm on November 17 and is currently on IR. The recovery was expected to take 6-8 weeks, and this week’s game vs the 49ers is the 6-week mark. However, since he hasn’t started his 21-day practice window yet, that suggests he is around 3 weeks away.

The first round of the playoffs, which is 8 weeks post-injury, starts in 18 days so his 21-day practice window should open this week.

David Montgomery – Projected return 4 weeks (2nd-round playoffs)

Montgomery has an MCL sprain that is severe or complicated enough that season-ending surgery was under consideration. He has chosen to try to rehab and return this season. Ian Rapaport reported this past weekend that the hope is Montgomery will be back for the divisional round which is 4 weeks away.

Montgomery was not placed on IR. Thus he can practice and play at any time, and there will be no 21-day practice window.

Ennis Rakestraw – Projected return >3 weeks (sometime in playoffs)

Rakestraw suffered his second hamstring issue of the year on November 23 and has been on IR. He was eligible to return last game vs the Bears, but his practice window did not open. This implies he is at least three weeks away.

Carlton Davis – Projected return 5 weeks (NFC Championship game)

Davis fractured his jaw on December 15 with an initial estimated recovery of six weeks. That would put him back for the NFC championship game.

Aidan Hutchinson – Projected return 7 weeks (Super Bowl)

It’s been 10 weeks since his left tib/fib fracture on October 13. There is a good chance the bone is fully healed now allowing all his energy to be directed towards rehabbing his legs enough to return for the Super Bowl. The big game is 17 weeks post-injury.

As the Detroit Lions continue to navigate through the ups and downs of the NFL season, one key factor that could potentially turn their luck around is the return of several injured players. With a handful of key contributors currently sidelined, fans are eagerly awaiting updates on when they can expect to see their favorite players back on the field.

Here are the projected return dates for Lions injured players this season:

    1. Jeff Okudah (CB) – Okudah suffered a season-ending Achilles injury in Week 1 against the San Francisco 49ers. He is expected to make a full recovery and return next season.

    2. Trey Flowers (DE) – Flowers is currently on injured reserve with a knee injury. He is expected to be out for at least another 4-6 weeks.

    3. Tyrell Crosby (OT) – Crosby is dealing with a back injury and is currently listed as week-to-week. He could potentially return in the next 2-3 weeks.

    4. Da’Shawn Hand (DT) – Hand has been dealing with a groin injury and is expected to miss the next 3-4 weeks.

    5. Romeo Okwara (DE) – Okwara suffered an Achilles injury in Week 5 and is expected to miss the remainder of the season.

While the Lions have certainly faced their fair share of challenges this season, the return of these key players could provide a much-needed boost to the team’s performance on the field. Stay tuned for updates on their progress and potential return dates as the season progresses.

  • One Projected $174 Million Blockbuster Move For Red Sox To Consider

One Projected $174 Million Blockbuster Move For Red Sox To Consider

The Boston Red Sox clearly need to add some right-handed pop to the lineup this offseason but who will they end up getting?

Right now, the most talked about free agent out there is All-Star Alex Bregman. He has spent his entire career to this point with the Houston Astros but likely will be elsewhere by the time Opening Day gets here for the 2025 season.

Adding Bregman would be the perfect move for the Red Sox, but what if they miss out on him? If the Red Sox don’t land Bregman, they should pivot and go after Pete Alonso. The former New York Mets star is available and Spotrac is projecting him to land a six-year, $174 million deal.

The longer he is available, the more likely that the price will go down. The Red Sox already have a very good first baseman in Triston Casas. Adding Alonso would surely lead to some logistical changes. If the Red Sox wanted to land Alonso, they likely would have to make a trade. They could either move Casas or designated hitter Masataka Yoshida.

The best solution would be moving Yoshida. If they opened up the designated hitter spot and somehow found a way to have Alonso, Casas, and Rafael Devers in the same lineup that would be phenomenal. Boston already seems like it could be one of the best teams in the American League in 2025 and adding Alonso could put them over the top if they miss on Bregman.

More MLB: Red Sox Urged To Sign $100 Million Star After Teoscar Hernández Miss

The Boston Red Sox have been known for making big moves in the past, and they may have another blockbuster move in mind this offseason. With a projected $174 million budget to work with, the Red Sox could potentially make a splash in the free agent market by signing one of the top players available.

One player that the Red Sox could consider pursuing is superstar outfielder George Springer. Springer, who is coming off a strong season with the Houston Astros, would provide a much-needed boost to the Red Sox lineup. With his combination of power and speed, he could make a huge impact for the team both offensively and defensively.

Signing Springer would not come cheap, as he is expected to command a hefty contract in free agency. However, with the Red Sox’s financial resources, they could potentially make a competitive offer to bring him to Boston.

Adding a player of Springer’s caliber to the roster could help the Red Sox compete for a World Series title in the upcoming season. While it would be a significant investment, the potential payoff could be well worth it for the team.

Overall, pursuing George Springer could be the blockbuster move that the Red Sox need to make this offseason. With their projected budget, they have the resources to make a splash in free agency and improve their chances of success in the upcoming season.

  • Flames’ Projected Lineup & Notes Against Golden Knights – 12.29.24

Flames’ Projected Lineup & Notes Against Golden Knights – 12.29.24

In a tale of two franchises, the Calgary Flames defeated the Pacific Division’s bottom seed, the San Jose Sharks, on Saturday night and will face off against the division’s top team, the Vegas Golden Knights, within 24 hours on Sunday.

One of the top things to look for in tonight’s contest is whether or not Jonathan Huberdeau can keep the ball rolling and score in his fourth straight contest.

On Saturday, he scored the Flames’ first goal and capped off the night with an empty netter. He’s leading the Calgary attack in December with seven goals and 13 points.

Meanwhile, Nazem Kadri picked up an assist on all three Flames goals against San Jose and has points in 14 out of the last 18 games, with the team going 9-5-4 in those contests.

After picking up a “hometown” win, Dustin Wolf is rotating out tonight in favor of Dan Vladar, getting his first start since Dec. 19, an overtime loss to the Ottawa Senators.

    In his career, Vladar is 1-1-1 against the Golden Knights with a 3.35 GAA and .883 SV%. He’s sporting a 6-6-5 record in 2024-25 with a 3.07 GAA and .886 SV%.

His counterpart at the other end of the ice will be Ilya Samsonov, who is in his first season with Vegas. He’s compiled an 8-3-1 record with a 2.97 GAA and .898 SV%.

Surprisingly, Samsonov has only played the Flames twice in his career. He has a 1-0-1 record, a sparkling 1.76 GAA, and a .927 SV%.

Ahead of Sunday night’s tilt, Vegas has 51 points, the second-best total in the NHL behind the Winnipeg Jets (53 points). They have a goal differential of plus-27 and have a 10-5-3 record on home ice.

Finally, the Flames picked up their fifth road win on Saturday in San Jose to improve to 5-7-4 as visitors. They continue to run a negative goal differential of minus-9, the fifth-worst statistic in the Pacific Division.

The Golden Knights are one reason for that lopsided total, shutting out Calgary in their first meeting on Oct. 28 at T-Mobile Arena, 5-0.

Projected Lineup: Dec. 29 vs. Buffalo

UPDATE: Alexandre Texier will play tonight and join Robert Thomas and Pavel Buchnevich on the top line.

The St. Louis Blues are set to close out to close out the 2024 home slate in a Sunday matinee matchup against the Buffalo Sabres (2 p.m., FanDuel Sports Network, 101 ESPN, Blues App).

With a midday matchup, the Blues will not have a morning skate Sunday morning at Enterprise Center. Media availability with Head Coach Jim Montgomery and practice lines are based on Saturday’s practice at Centene Community Ice Center.

Minimal lineup changes are expected for the Blues after coming off a 7-4 win over the Nashville Predators on Friday.

Alexandre Texier, who missed Friday’s game with illness, could be an option to return for the Blues after rejoining the team for Saturday’s skate.

Montgomery confirmed that Texier could re-join the top line upon his return, and could push Jake Neighbours to the third line.

Additionally, Jim Montgomery confirmed that Radek Faksa, who has played only one game since sustaining a skate cut near the groin on Dec. 10 in Vancouver, could potentially draw back in for the Blues on Sunday.

“Faksa, he looks better in practice. [He’s] making the steps, but we’ve got to see how he responds,” Montgomery said. “That was a pretty hard 45-minute skate, so we’ve got to see how he responds to it.”

Jordan Binnington is expected to start in net.
