Flames’ Projected Lineup & Notes Against Sharks – 12.28.24

The Calgary Flames (16-11-7) return from their Christmas break with a min-two game road trip that begins against the San Jose Sharks on Saturday night.

It will be the first time 2024 first-overall pick Macklin Celebrini will play the Flames in his young career. Calgary recently played the top pick from the 2023 draft, Connor Bedard, who scored his first goal against the club in a 6-4 loss.

Tonight’s game will be memorable for Dustin Wolf, born in Gilroy, CA, a town roughly 35 minutes south of San Jose. This is the 23-year-old’s first game against his “hometown” team.

    He’s 10-5-2 this season with a 2.80 GAA and .910 SV%. However, he’s just 1-4-1 on the road with a 4.16 GAA and .862 SV%.

Meanwhile, against the two other California teams, the Anaheim Ducks and Los Angeles Kings, Wolf is 2-0-0 with 2.00 GAA and .921 SV%.

The Sharks plan to start rookie Yaroslav Askarov, who has been 1-1-2 in four games since joining San Jose following a trade from the Nashville Predators this past summer.

Moreover, Celebrini will look to continue his strong play at home, where he has nine goals and 15 points in 12 games. As one of the front runners for the Calder Trophy, he’s got 11 goals and 26 points in 26 games, ranking fourth in team scoring.

Regarding their places in the standings, Calgary (39 points) ranks fifth in the Pacific Division and is two points behind the Vancouver Canucks for the last wildcard spot in the Western Conference.

The Sharks (28 points) remain last in the Pacific Division and have the NHL’s second-worst record, but they are front runners to win the NHL Draft Lottery for the second consecutive season.

  • Dallas Cowboys QB projected to leave for another NFC team in free agency

Dallas Cowboys QB projected to leave for another NFC team in free agency

The Dallas Cowboys have been without star quarterback Dak Prescott after his season-ending hamstring injury suffered in a Week 9 loss to the Atlanta Falcons.

Cooper Rush stepped into the starting role and has done an admirable job, going 4-3 and leading the Cowboys to four wins in their last five games.

Unfortunately for the Cowboys, Rush is set to hit NFL free agency this offseason and he could move on for another opportunity.

One of those opportunities is up north in the NFC.

MORE: Cooper Rush’s career day shows signs of improvement for Cowboys

Rush has been named as a potential replacement for Sam Darnold with the Minnesota Vikings. Darnold is having a Pro Bowl season, but will hit free agency and could command a $100 million contract after putting up career-high numbers.

Darnold is expendable with the Vikings using a first-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft on J.J. McCarthy out of Michigan.

If Minnesota decides to roll the dice with McCarthy moving forward, Bleacher Report’s Scouting Department believes Rush could be a perfect fit in the backup and mentor role.

    J.J. McCarthy, Minnesota Vikings

The big question facing Minnesota’s front office this offseason is what to do with Sam Darnold, who has played well enough to earn a new contract and be a starter in 2025. However, the organization also invested a first-round pick in J.J. McCarthy last spring.

If the club lets Darnold walk to make way for McCarthy, signing Rush as a backup in free agency would be a smart move. That gives the young quarterback a good mentor, and the 31-year-old has plenty of starting experience to fill in when needed.

    – Bleacher Report’s Scouting Department

The Cowboys have a lot of important decisions to make in free agency, and Rush is among the most important. Not only is Rush going to be a free agent, but fellow backup quarterback Trey Lance, who has not had an opportunity to prove himself, will be as well.

If the Cowboys allow the quarterbacks to explore other opportunities, they will be in desperate need of a new backup who can provide depth behind Dak Prescott, so it’s a heavy decision the team will need to weigh.

According to recent reports, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is projected to leave the team and sign with another NFC team in free agency. Prescott, who has been with the Cowboys since 2016, is set to become a free agent this offseason and is reportedly looking for a fresh start with a new team.

Many sources are speculating that Prescott could potentially sign with teams such as the Washington Football Team, New Orleans Saints, or San Francisco 49ers, all of which are in need of a starting quarterback. While nothing has been confirmed yet, it seems increasingly likely that Prescott will be donning a new jersey next season.

Cowboys fans are understandably disappointed at the prospect of losing their star quarterback, but it seems that Prescott is ready to move on and explore new opportunities in the NFC. Stay tuned for more updates as the offseason progresses.

  • Penguins’ Projected Lineup & Notes Against Islanders – 12.28.24

Penguins’ Projected Lineup & Notes Against Islanders – 12.28.24

The Pittsburgh Penguins (16-15-5) return from their Christmas break, sitting one point from a wildcard spot in the Eastern Conference.

Their first opponent is the New York Islanders, a team just four points behind them in the standings and hoping to crash the wildcard race party.

Tonight, one of the key things to watch for is whether or not Sidney Crosby can become Pittsburgh’s all-time assist leader. Before the break, he had three helpers in a contest against the Philadelphia Flyers to tie Mario Lemieux’s record of 1,033 helpers.

Meanwhile, the last time the Penguins scored a touchdown in a game was on Dec. 12, when they defeated Montreal 9-2. However, the Ottawa Senators shut them down in their next contest, and they lost 3-2 in overtime.

Which Penguins team will show up on Long Island tonight? Will it be the NHL’s 10th-best offense or a team scrapping for every possible point who sometimes can’t score more than twice in a game?

Between the pipes, Tristan Jarry will get his first start against the Islanders this season since Alex Nedeljkovic suffered the shutout loss in November.

It will be his 16th career start against New York, one of his favorite opponents, thanks to an 11-3-1 record. Jarry’s record is 8-5-2 this year with a 3.47 GAA and .885 SV%.

The Islanders are rolling with Ilya Sorokin in goal, who is making his 26th start of the campaign. He is getting a lot of work these days while Sergei Varlamov recovers from a lower-body injury.

Sorokin is 9-5-0 in 14 games against the Penguins and playing very uncharacteristically this season, with a 10-11-4 record, a 2.95 GAA, and a .898 SV%.

New York (33 points) ranks eighth in the Metropolitan Division and has the seventh-worst record in the league. Meanwhile, the Penguins (37 points) remain fourth in the Metropolitan Division and one point out of the wildcard race.

    Notes:
    – The Penguins are coming off a dominant 5-1 win against the Detroit Red Wings and will look to carry that momentum into tonight’s game.

Bruins-Blue Jackets Projected Lines, Pairings: Jeremy Swayman Starts

The Bruins finish off a home-and-home series against the Blue Jackets on Saturday hoping to avenge a forgettable loss.

Columbus dominated Boston with a 6-2 win at Nationwide Arena on Friday. It marked another dominant win for the Blue Jackets over the Black and Gold, but the B’s carry a short memory of the “unacceptable” loss heading into TD Garden.

Neither side held a morning skate Saturday morning. The only change expected for the Bruins is in net with Jeremy Swayman getting the nod for Joonas Korpisalo. Marc McLaughlin won’t be an option because the forward was loaned to Providence, per the AHL transaction wire.

Columbus dressed 11 forwards and seven defensemen in the last two games. It’s unknown if Dean Evason will roll out the same lineup, but the B’s will look to be prepared to avoid a two-game losing streak.

Puck drop for Boston-Columbus is scheduled at 7 p.m. ET, and you can catch full coverage on NESN after an hour of pregame.

Projected Lineup: Dec. 27 vs. Predators

Update: Alexandre Texier did not participate in pregame warmups and will not play in tonight’s game.

Coming off a 4-0 shutout win in Detroit prior to the holiday break, the Blues will return home to take on the Nashville Predators with a slightly new lineup look in the first of two home matchups to close out the year (7 p.m., FanDuel Sports Network Midwest, 101 ESPN, Blues App).

Alexandre Texier, who scored his second goal of the season after playing on the top line in Monday’s win over the Red Wings, did not skate Friday morning at Enterprise Center and will be a game-time decision due to illness, according to Head Coach Jim Montgomery.

“He earned the right to move up, to give us a different look up there… and I thought he was leading them [Robert Thomas and Pavel Buchnevich] with a purpose and pace. So that’s why he’s been rewarded with more ice time — I don’t know if he’ll play tonight but he’s going to get that opportunity again,” Montgomery said.

With Texier possibly out, Jake Neighbours would likely fill the left wing spot on the top line, while the second line of Dylan Holloway, Brayden Schenn, and Jordan Kyrou will stay together after creating two of Holloway’s three goals in Detroit.

Brandon Saad is expected to re-draw on the third line for Neighbours if Texier is unable to play.

Joel Hofer will return to the starter’s net for the Blues after going 4-0-1 in last five starts this season.

“We have to focus on ourselves [after] being off for three days. We played two complete games and we need to do that on home ice. It’s been a while since we’ve been able to be rested and give our fans something to cheer about for 60 minutes — and that’s what I’m looking forward to developing here.”
