  • Match report: Liverpool lose at PSV Eindhoven but top UCL league phase

    Team

Jayden Danns made his first start at senior level for Liverpool and Federico Chiesa was also part of the attack as Slot made nine changes.

Andy Robertson took the captain’s armband and lined up at centre-back.

Liverpool: Kelleher, Endo, Chiesa, Gakpo (Morton, 51), Elliott, Tsimikas, Robertson (Nyoni, 64), McConnell, Danns (Nallo, 83), Quansah, Bradley.

Unused subs: Jaros, Davies, Kone-Doherty, Mabaya, Morrison, Norris.

    First half

The teams emerged for the league-phase finale to the backdrop of a din inside Philips Stadium, a venue the Reds last visited back in 2008.

A lively start only gave way to snatches of chances at either end, with Chiesa firing one decent effort from outside the area into the gloves of PSV goalkeeper Walter Benitez.

The Italian was unable to make the most of space right of goal when later picked out by Elliott, before Joey Veerman swerved a good free-kick just too high of Caoimhin Kelleher’s net.

Chiesa had been an energetic presence throughout the early phases and that paid dividends for the visitors prior to the half-hour.

His latest foray along the right-hand side was partially dealt with by PSV, but the home team were caught playing out and Chiesa’s press on Veerman drew a foul inside the box.

Elliott immediately swiped the loose ball past Benitez but the referee pulled play back to award a penalty, which Gakpo calmly stroked into the bottom right corner.

Liverpool’s lead was short-lived, though. From a lofted pass into their area, Pepi’s deft flick teed up Bakayoko, who feinted as Robertson and Jarell Quansah slid in and clipped a clinical effort inside the left post.

A frenzied end to the half ensued.

In a thrilling match at the Philips Stadion, Liverpool suffered a 2-1 defeat to PSV Eindhoven. Despite the loss, the Reds secured their spot at the top of the UEFA Champions League group stage, thanks to their impressive performances in previous matches.

PSV took an early lead through a goal from Donyell Malen, but Liverpool fought back with a goal from Mohamed Salah to level the score. However, PSV regained the lead with a late goal from Cody Gakpo, securing the victory for the Dutch side.

Despite the disappointing result, Liverpool’s strong performances in the group stage ensured they finished at the top of their group, setting them up for a favorable draw in the knockout rounds of the competition.

Overall, it was a tough loss for Liverpool, but their focus now shifts to the next stage of the Champions League as they look to continue their quest for European glory.

  • Pepi settles thriller for PSV Eindhoven but Liverpool hold on to top spot | Champions League

Liverpool lost their 100% record in the Champions League but you suspect Arne Slot will be over the disappointment before the team’s flight lands back on Merseyside. PSV Eindhoven secured the victory they needed to guarantee a playoff place with a rousing comeback against a youthful Liverpool side, who had debutant Amara Nallo sent off four minutes after his introduction.

Nallo’s misfortune – the 18-year-old defender looked distraught after receiving a straight red for denying Johan Bakayoko a clear goalscoring opportunity – tainted an encouraging display from Liverpool’s youngsters. But Slot’s side retained top spot in the table regardless of defeat. And, as the Liverpool head coach admitted beforehand, the final placing hardly matters when his team are guaranteed to face the 15th, 16th, 17th or 18th placed side in the last 16.

Former PSV favourite Cody Gakpo and Andy Robertson were the only players retained from Saturday’s starting lineup against Ipswich. Liverpool had earned the right to rest regulars ahead of the weekend trip to Bournemouth, a key game that Slot admitted was on his mind when planning for PSV, although Darwin Núñez was an enforced absentee after falling ill on the day of the game. His place in attack went to Jayden Danns, who became the youngest player to make his full debut for Liverpool in a European Cup/Champions League fixture aged 19 years and 13 days.

It is testament to the work being done from academy to senior level at Liverpool that Slot’s makeshift, youthful side were still recognisable in style. Danns and James McConnell both impressed in a rollercoaster of a first half although it was an old head in the centre of defence who influenced the visitors’ assured start. Robertson took Virgil van Dijk’s position and captain’s armband for the night. He must have taken distribution tips from Van Dijk too as he dropped a series of pinpoint deliveries behind the PSV defence.

Conor Bradley and Gakpo both almost capitalised on long Robertson passes before the Scotland captain sprayed another fine ball to Federico Chiesa on the right wing. Mauro Júnior regained possession and gave it to Joey Veerman to complete the clearance. The PSV midfielder was far too casual, however, and took a heavy first touch inside his penalty area that invited Chiesa to intercept. Veerman’s second touch wiped out the Italy international, who required lengthy treatment, and resulted in a clear penalty. Gakpo sent Walter Benítez the wrong way from the spot and raised his hands in apology to his former club. The contest had lift off.

The hosts hit back for the first time with an exquisite goal from Bakayoko. Released into the Liverpool area by a deft touch from striker Ricardo Pepi, the winger put both Robertson and Jarell Quansah on their backsides with a dummy and curled an unstoppable finish inside Caoimhín Kelleher’s right-hand post.

Liverpool retook the lead five minutes later when Gakpo turned Wataru Endo’s long ball into the path of Chiesa, whose low drive was parried into the path of Harvey Elliott by Benítez. The midfielder, who scored the winner against Lille last week, made no mistake from close range.

Back came PSV against a vulnerable Liverpool defence and an exposed Bradley at right back. The visitors wanted a foul when Endo was dispossessed by Tygo Land in central midfield. Referee Tobias Stieler was not interested and Veerman released Ismael Saibari inside the box with a perfectly-weighted pass. The left winger lashed an unstoppable shot into the roof of Kelleher’s net.

PSV profited down their left again to take the lead in the sixth minute of first-half stoppage time. Mauro Júnior broke into the area and played a low cross towards Pepi. The delivery deflected off Bradley, diverting it away from both the striker and Robertson, and sailed inside the far corner.

PSV came into the game with a chance of finishing in the top eight, the playoff places or the elimination zone. The fightback underlined that the occasion was of greater importance to Peter Bosz’s team.

Gakpo was given a rousing reception from all four sides of the Philips Stadion when he was replaced by Tyler Morton early in the second half.

With Slot introducing more young talent and PSV seemingly content to protect their advantage, the game unsurprisingly petered out following the late first-half flurry. Morton made a superb block to prevent Pepi adding a fourth from a PSV counterattack and also tested Benítez from distance. That was a rare threat from Liverpool in the second half. Their task became even more difficult when Nallo accidentally clipped Bakayoko as they pursued a long ball over the top and was shown red.

In a thrilling Champions League match, Pepi settles the score for PSV Eindhoven as they secure a crucial victory. However, despite their win, Liverpool manages to hold on to the top spot in the group standings. The match was filled with excitement and drama as both teams fought hard for the win.

Slot mira a largo plazo.

  • Arne Slot says he is making ‘choice for the long-term’ in resting Liverpool regulars for PSV clash

Arne Slot says he is protecting his squad for the key months ahead as tomorrow’s Champions League game with PSV Eindhoven has “no importance to the league table”.

The head coach has left most of his first-team players at home as Liverpool have already qualified for the last 16 and are guaranteed to finish in the top two positions.

Alisson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz have not travelled and will be given a day of rest on Wednesday before returning to train early on Thursday morning.

“It took me some time to understand this new format but now I can say that I’m 100 per cent sure that it doesn’t matter if we finish first or second because we will play the team in 14, 15, 16 or 17, then it is a draw of which team we will face,” Slot says. “We cannot drop to number three so this is a game for us that has no importance to the league table.

“But a very wise man said to me that he’s never seen anything good from losing a football game so we will do everything we can to try and win it.”

‘Un-be-liev-able’: How Szoboszlai became essential for Liverpool

Slot has worked closely with his staff to decide which players need a rest ahead of a continued busy period.

He decided to take Cody Gakpo along as he wanted to give him the opportunity to face his former side, who he joined Liverpool from two years ago.

“These players are ready and all the players who were left behind could have played tomorrow,” he says.

“But in the long-term — so it doesn’t tell us anything about Saturday’s game — if you look back at our season, after four or five weeks, we gave them a break during the week if there was a moment to give them one. We’ve always done it to keep them fresh.

“Also, because we mainly start with 13 or 14 players who have shared most of the playing time, some of the others haven’t played a lot.

“It’s very useful for the other players to now get 90 minutes because if we do get into any injury problems, it will be useful to have these players. It’s a choice we have made for the long term.”

Arne Slot says he is making ‘choice for the long-term’ in resting Liverpool regulars for PSV clash

Arne Slot, the head coach of Liverpool, has made the bold decision to rest several key players for their upcoming clash against PSV. Slot has stated that he is making this choice with the long-term success of the team in mind, as he believes that giving some of his regular starters a break will benefit the team in the long run.

While some fans may be concerned about the impact of resting key players in such an important match, Slot is confident in his decision and believes that the squad has the depth and quality to still perform well against PSV. He emphasized that he is looking at the bigger picture and wants to ensure that his players are fresh and fit for the challenges ahead.

Slot’s decision to rest players for the PSV clash may raise some eyebrows, but his focus on the long-term success of the team is commendable. It will be interesting to see how the squad performs without some of their regular starters, but Slot’s commitment to making decisions that benefit the team in the long run is certainly a positive sign for Liverpool fans.

  • PSV vs. Liverpool (Jan 29, 2025) Pregame

Jan 28 (Reuters) – Liverpool can afford to rest a host of regular starters for their last league-phase game in the Champions League and giving players a break is more of a priority than maintaining first place in the standings, manager Arne Slot said on Tuesday.

Captain Virgil van Dijk, top scorer Mohamed Salah and keeper Alisson have all been left behind for Wednesday’s game at PSV Eindhoven, along with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ibrahima Konate, Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Luis Diaz.

Liverpool, guaranteed a place in the Champions League’s last 16, also lead the Premier League and are still in the FA Cup and League Cup, so will have plenty of big matches to come this season.

“I think we are playing, like all the teams in Europe, many, many, many games and these players have already, so all the ones that are left behind could have played tomorrow,” Slot told reporters.

“If you look back at our season, it’s been almost every time after three or four or five weeks, we gave them a break during the week when it was the League Cup or the FA Cup.

“If there was a moment for them to get some freshness back, we’ve always done that.”

While Slot’s side have won all seven games in the competition, Liverpool could still be overtaken at the top by Barcelona if they lose at PSV, but the manager was not overly concerned about their final position.

Liverpool cannot slip out of the top two, and when it comes to the round of 16 draw, whether they finish first or second will make no difference to whom they will face next.

“It took me a while to understand this new format, but I always say when I think I’m 100% sure I used 99.9%, but now I can say I’m 100% sure that it doesn’t matter at all if we end up first or second,” Slot said.

“Because we will play a side between 15th and 18th place, and then in the end it’s a draw which of the teams we are going to face.

“So this is a game for us, because we are now number one, or two, we cannot drop to number three.

“But a very wise man once said to me, I’ve never seen anything good coming from losing a football game, so we are not going into the game tomorrow trying to lose the game, we will do everything we can trying to win it of course.”
