USDA orders removal of climate change mentions from public websites
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has directed agency officials to review and remove content related to climate change from its public websites, according to internal emails obtained by ABC News.
The directive instructs web managers to identify, archive, or unpublish materials mentioning climate change by “no later than close of business this Friday,” according to the emails.
In an email sent Thursday, USDA Director of Digital Communications Peter Rhee detailed the process, requiring staff to “identify and archive or unpublish any landing pages focused on climate change” and track related content in an attached Excel spreadsheet for review.
“OC will review the submitted materials and make determinations on next steps,” Rhee wrote, referring to the department’s Office of Communications.
A separate email sent to website managers at the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) emphasized the urgency of the request.
“USDA and ARS OC are requesting you comply with the instructions below from USDA’s Office of Communications,” the email read, instructing ARS staff to submit their content audit by 3 p.m. ET Friday to meet the department’s deadline.
USDA officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment from ABC News.

According to the spreadsheet provided to website managers and obtained by ABC News, content is being categorized into three levels of urgency. Pages dedicated entirely to climate change are marked as “Tier 1,” while those where a significant portion of the content relates to climate change are labeled “Tier 2.”
Pages where climate change is mentioned in passing but is not the main focus should be identified under “Tier 3,” according to the spreadsheet.
“For each piece of content, include the title, link, and your recommendation on how the content should be handled,” the email reads.
The USDA has long been involved in climate research and in studying how rising temperatures and shifting weather patterns impact agriculture. The department’s website includes extensive resources on climate science, carbon sequestration, and adaptation strategies for farmers.
A USDA webpage published in 2022 provides information on “Climate Change Adaptation and USDA.”
“Producers, ranchers, forest landowners, and communities across the country are facing challenges posed by the effects of climate change,” the webpage states. “Some of these effects are familiar but occurring more frequently or intensely while others are new and unprecedented.”
The directive to remove mentions of climate change from websites follows President Donald Trump’s executive orders reversing key climate policies, which include withdrawing from the Paris climate agreement, expanding fossil fuel production, weakening environmental protections, and revoking EV incentives.
Critics warn these actions will accelerate climate change and disproportionately harm vulnerable communities.
Recently, the USDA made the controversial decision to order the removal of any mentions of climate change from its public websites. This move has sparked outrage among environmental activists and scientists, who argue that ignoring the issue of climate change is a dangerous and irresponsible decision.By censoring information about climate change, the USDA is hindering efforts to raise awareness about the environmental challenges facing our planet. Climate change is a pressing issue that affects agricultural practices, food security, and overall environmental sustainability. Ignoring the science and evidence behind climate change only serves to impede progress in finding solutions to mitigate its impacts.
It is crucial for government agencies like the USDA to acknowledge and address the reality of climate change, rather than try to sweep it under the rug. By silencing discussions about climate change, the USDA is failing to fulfill its duty to protect the environment and ensure the long-term health and prosperity of our planet.
We must continue to push for transparency and accountability within government agencies to ensure that vital information about climate change is not suppressed or ignored. The fight against climate change requires a united effort from all sectors of society, and we cannot afford to let politics get in the way of taking meaningful action.

Office of Public Affairs | Justice Department Announces Charges Against China-Based Chemical Manufacturing Companies and Arrests of Executives in Fentanyl Manufacturing
On Friday June 23, 2023 the Justice Department announced the arrest of two individuals and the unsealing of three indictments in the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York charging China-based companies and their employees with crimes related to fentanyl production, distribution, and sales resulting from precursor chemicals. These indictments represent the first prosecutions to charge China-based chemical manufacturing companies and nationals of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) for trafficking fentanyl precursor chemicals into the United States. Specifically, the indictments allege the defendants knowingly manufactured, marketed, sold, and supplied precursor chemicals for fentanyl production in the United States in violation of federal law.
The Office of Public Affairs at the Justice Department has announced significant charges against China-based chemical manufacturing companies involved in the illicit production of fentanyl. Additionally, arrests have been made of executives involved in the manufacturing and distribution of this deadly synthetic opioid.Fentanyl has been a major contributor to the opioid crisis in the United States, causing countless overdose deaths and devastating families and communities. The Justice Department is taking a strong stance against those who are fueling this epidemic by targeting the manufacturers and distributors of this dangerous drug.
The charges and arrests made in this case are a significant step in combatting the flow of illicit fentanyl into the United States and holding those responsible accountable for their actions. The Justice Department is committed to working with international partners to dismantle the illegal drug trade and protect the public from the devastating effects of fentanyl.
Stay tuned for further updates on this important case as the Justice Department continues its efforts to combat the opioid crisis and bring those responsible to justice.

Public safety bills seek to defund new prison in Franklin County
Newly filed bills during the legislative session seek to fund public safety initiatives while defunding and reallocating revenue for a new 3,000-bed prison that is planned to be built in Franklin County. “If my bills pass, we know that the first $100 million of sales tax revenue that comes in, the state is going to be able to address this crisis,” Arkansas District 28 Sen. Bryan King said. “Then they’re not going to have the money for the mega prison, major financial disaster in Franklin County.”Senate Bill 143 would reallocate $100 million in sales tax revenues to Arkansas State Police for new crime reduction and prevention programs.According to the bill, the programs would include assisting with probation and parole services, while also allowing funds for local sheriffs to hire more deputies to focus on preventing and reducing crimes in their counties.Senate Bill 144 would allow the eight Arkansas counties, which account for approximately two-thirds of the state’s prison inmates, to partner with adjoining counties to build or expand a shared multi-county jail to house inmates who are waiting to go to prison.King told 40/29 News that his proposals would ease local jail overcrowding issues while also adequately funding public safety measures in Arkansas.”We’ve got to address the crime issue right now. There’s nothing in the governor’s proposal that’s going to do anything substantial to reduce the crime. We’ve already got a high incarceration rate,” King said. “This is just finding revenue streams that we know will pay for, and do it in a fiscally responsible way, and get immediate safety out there to our citizens.”
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. —Newly filed bills during the legislative session seek to fund public safety initiatives while defunding and reallocating revenue for a new 3,000-bed prison that is planned to be built in Franklin County.
“If my bills pass, we know that the first $100 million of sales tax revenue that comes in, the state is going to be able to address this crisis,” Arkansas District 28 Sen. Bryan King said. “Then they’re not going to have the money for the mega prison, major financial disaster in Franklin County.”
Senate Bill 143 would reallocate $100 million in sales tax revenues to Arkansas State Police for new crime reduction and prevention programs.
According to the bill, the programs would include assisting with probation and parole services, while also allowing funds for local sheriffs to hire more deputies to focus on preventing and reducing crimes in their counties.
Senate Bill 144 would allow the eight Arkansas counties, which account for approximately two-thirds of the state’s prison inmates, to partner with adjoining counties to build or expand a shared multi-county jail to house inmates who are waiting to go to prison.
King told 40/29 News that his proposals would ease local jail overcrowding issues while also adequately funding public safety measures in Arkansas.
“We’ve got to address the crime issue right now.
In a move aimed at prioritizing public safety over incarceration, a group of legislators in Franklin County have introduced a series of bills aimed at defunding the construction of a new prison in the area. The proposed facility has faced backlash from community members and advocates who argue that investing in alternatives to incarceration, such as mental health services, substance abuse treatment, and affordable housing, would better address the root causes of crime and promote long-term public safety. The bills, which are currently being considered by the state legislature, would redirect funding earmarked for the new prison towards community-based programs that aim to reduce recidivism, support reentry, and address systemic issues within the criminal justice system. Advocates for the legislation argue that the construction of a new prison would only perpetuate cycles of incarceration and harm, particularly for marginalized communities who are disproportionately impacted by the criminal justice system.
Supporters of the bills point to successful examples of states and cities that have invested in alternatives to incarceration and seen significant reductions in crime rates and recidivism. By prioritizing prevention, rehabilitation, and support services, they argue that Franklin County can create a safer and more equitable community for all residents.
As the debate over the new prison continues, community members are urged to contact their legislators and voice their support for the public safety bills that seek to defund its construction. By investing in solutions that address the root causes of crime and support individuals in need, Franklin County can move towards a more just and compassionate approach to public safety.

Tennis legend Anna Kournikova sparks major concern in first public appearance in over two years
Tennis icon Anna Kournikova has sparked major health fears after she was spotted in a wheelchair.
The 43-year-old retired tennis player, who reached a career high of World No. 8, has not been seen in two years.
And Kournikova, who has been with her long-time partner Spanish singer Enrique Iglesias for over two decades, raised concerns among fans when she resurfaced in Miami over the weekend.
The Russian, who retired from tennis in 2003, was spotted in a wheelchair at Bal Harbour, a luxurious shopping center in the Floridian city, on Saturday.
Kournikova was pictured wearing an orthopedic boot on her foot, suggesting she recently suffered an injury.
She was accompanied by her two daughters, Lucy, 7, and Mary, 4, who she shares with Grammy award winner Iglesias, as well as some friends.

The tennis player, once voted the world’s sexiest woman, reached a career-high World No. 8
Kournikova was dressed down in an all-black sweat suit set and sunglasses, and wore her long blonde tresses scraped back into a messy bun.
In one photo, Kournikova’s banged-up pinky finger could be seen wrapped in a pink band aid.
Kournikova called it quits on her on-court career back in May 2003 after winning 16 career titles in the doubles game.
She hit a career-high ranking of No. 1 in doubles after winning the Australian Open alongside partner Martina Hingis.
Kournikova enjoyed less success in the singles, failing to win a title. However, she did reach the semifinal of Wimbledon in 1997, becoming only the second woman in the open era to reach the semifinals on her debut at SW19. She lost to eventual champion Hingis.
She was forced into an early retirement at just 21 years old following a series of injuries, mainly back problems.
Kournikova also enjoyed the spotlight away from the court, garnering fame as a model. In 2002, she was voted the world’s sexiest woman, beating out the likes of Britney Spears and Jennifer Lopez, and was also acknowledged as the sexiest female tennis player of all time in 2010.
It was through her off-court endeavors that she met her now-partner. Kournikova and Iglesias, the son of Spanish singer and former soccer star Julio Iglesias, began dating in 2001 after she appeared in his music video for ‘Escape’.

They have welcomed three children together, including twins Lucy and Nicholas, as well as Mary. However, the greatest mystery surrounding their relationship is if the couple have tied the knot or not.
The ‘Bailando’ singer has previously insisted he wasn’t bothered about getting married but has also referred to Kournikova as ‘my wife.’
When questioned about referring to Anna as his ‘wife’ in 2012, he clarified: ‘It was just meant to be sweet in the moment. I honestly didn’t mean to confuse people. I thought it’d be easier for the audience to understand than if I said “my girl.”
‘I’ve never really thought marriage would make a difference. Maybe it’s because I come from divorced parents, but I don’t think you love someone more because of a piece of paper.
‘And nowadays, it’s not taboo to have kids and not be married. What makes a difference is that you’re a good parent, period.’
Meanwhile, Iglesias’s brother, Julio Jr, may have accidentally let their relationship status slip in a 2023 interview on Spanish program Y Ahora Sonsoles.
‘My mother has seen me get married, my sister Chábeli get married, she has seen Ana get married… Enrique didn’t have a big wedding,’ he casually said, referring to his mom Isabel Preysler.
After stepping away from tennis, Kournikova has settled into family life with both she and Iglesias keeping a relatively low profile.

The couple met on the set of the Spanish singer’s music video for his hit ‘Escape’ in 2001
Kournikova and Iglesias share three children, twins Lucy and Nicholas, 7, and Mary, 4,
While the former tennis star has kept her life out of the spotlight, the singer-songwriter has been more open about their family life.
‘I’m relaxing at home with the kids, enjoying taking them to school and watching them grow,’ he said at the 2024 40 Music Awards.
‘I have twins that are six and a girl who is four, so every day they grow so fast.
‘I want to enjoy that. In 24 hours they’re already grown.’
The couple currently share a home in Miami, where they raise their three children.
Prior to becoming involved with Enrique, Anna was in a long-term relationship with professional ice hockey player Pavel Bure.
In a shocking turn of events, tennis legend Anna Kournikova made her first public appearance in over two years, sparking major concern among fans and followers. The former professional tennis player, known for her stunning looks and powerful playing style, appeared frail and noticeably thinner than in previous years. Many fans took to social media to express their worries about Kournikova’s health and well-being.
Some speculated that the 40-year-old may be struggling with health issues or facing personal challenges, while others called for her privacy and respect during this difficult time.
Kournikova, who famously dated singer Enrique Iglesias and retired from professional tennis in 2003, has kept a low profile in recent years, leading to increased speculation about her whereabouts and well-being.
As fans continue to express their concerns and support for Kournikova, many are hoping for further updates on her condition and the reasons behind her sudden appearance.

C-drama star Zhao Lusi makes first public appearance since revealing depression and abuse struggles
CHENGDU, Jan 27 — On Saturday, Chinese actress Zhao Lusi, 26, made her first public appearance at a fan meeting hosted by beverage company Viee, following her revelation about struggling with depression and past abuse.
According to CNA, the event, held in Chengdu, China, also provided Zhao an opportunity to speak about her health challenges.
It was reported that last year, the Hidden Love actress was seen in a wheelchair at a hospital, which raised concerns about her condition. Later, videos surfaced showing Zhao struggling with basic motor functions, including walking and eating.
“I experienced symptoms of paralysis and loss of speech. It was very difficult but now, I am grateful for how far I have come,” said Zhao was quoted as saying at the event.
“Before Chinese New Year, I wanted to show everyone the progress I have made in my recovery,” she added.
During the event, Zhao took time to connect with her fans, comforting those who were moved to tears by her appearance.
CNA reported that just days before, she shared in an interview with a China-based publication Global Times that she is receiving treatment for depression while also advocating for “vulnerable groups”.
“I want to say the support and encouragement everyone gives me is incredibly valuable. Thus, I also hope to use my own strength to help as many people as I can, especially those who are struggling with mental health issues,” she told the publication.
Zhao recently opened up about her health struggles in a Weibo post on January 1. The actress stated that she had been battling depression since 2019. In her post, she recounted her experiences with abuse including being physically punished for poor grades as a child and beaten after failed auditions as she pursued her acting career, which led her to internalise her struggles and avoid seeking help.
Despite it all, Zhao expressed gratitude to those who supported her, emphasising that depression is a real illness that cannot be resolved by simply “thinking positively”. She concluded her message with a note of hope, thanking her supporters and wishing them happiness for the new year, saying that love had given her strength to recover and live again.
