Samuel L. Jackson has enjoyed one of the most remarkable careers in Hollywood history. You can’t even begin to construct a list of the without touching on some of the biggest franchises ever. Jackson was in Steven Spielberg’s original Jurassic Park. He played Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and was a Jedi master in Star Wars. For real, any list of the is going to be leaving off multiple stone-cold masterpieces. So when Sam speaks up about the different impacts Die Hard with a Vengeance had on his career versus Pulp Fiction, you have to listen and accept what he says.

The reason this conversation even comes up is because Sam Jackson appeared in both of these movies with Bruce Willis, and released them around the same time: , and the third Die Hard movie, Die Hard with a Vengeance, in 1995. Speaking with , Jackson shared stories of Willis – a Die Hard veteran – explaining to the Coming to America co-star that involvement in With a Vengeance was going to change his life. Here, listen to Sam tell it:

Maybe too much time has passed, and people have forgotten what a massive success the , particularly through the first three movies. I wrote that tries to capture the impact of that series on his career, and the industry, but the way that Samuel L. Jackson sums it up really hammers the point home. Pulp Fiction was a major movie for Jackson. It earned him an Oscar nomination, and turned his monologue structured around Ezekiel 25:17 into a pop-culture lightning strike that none of us were going to forget.

Because as impactful as that movie was, its effects were dwarfed by Die Hard with a Vengeance. As Jackson explained, crowds embraced his cantankerous character, Zeus. They’d shout Die Hard quotes back to him when they saw him in the streets. And, more importantly, the film industry suddenly recognized Jackson as someone who could carry a blockbuster. As he recalled:

After appearing in Die Hard with a Vengeance, Samuel L. Jackson started . He continued doing prestige pictures like Eve’s Bayou. He on Jackie Brown. But you’d also find him in bigger-ticket items such as The Long Kiss Goodnight, Sphere, The Negotiator and, in 1999, Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace. It makes me wonder if Zeus walked so that ?

It makes me sad that we won’t get another Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson collaboration, as the former . But we’ll always have Pulp Fiction, Die Hard with a Vengeance, and a string of excellent M. Night Shyamalan movies including Unbreakable and Glass to remind us of their combustible chemistry together.

In a surprising revelation, legendary actor Samuel L. Jackson recently admitted that his role in the Die Hard franchise had a bigger impact on his career than his iconic role in Pulp Fiction. And even more surprisingly, Bruce Willis, his co-star in the Die Hard films, was involved in this admission.

During a recent interview, Jackson shared that while Pulp Fiction may have solidified his status as a Hollywood A-lister, it was his role as Zeus Carver in Die Hard with a Vengeance that truly propelled him into the mainstream. He credited the success of the Die Hard franchise for opening doors for him in the industry and allowing him to take on a wide range of roles.

But what makes this revelation even more interesting is the involvement of Bruce Willis, who also chimed in on the topic. Willis, who is best known for his role as John McClane in the Die Hard series, shared that working with Jackson on the film was a game-changer for both of them. He praised Jackson’s talent and work ethic, and expressed his gratitude for the impact they had on each other’s careers.

This unexpected admission from Samuel L. Jackson and Bruce Willis serves as a reminder of the lasting impact of the Die Hard franchise and the incredible chemistry between these two Hollywood legends. And it just goes to show that sometimes, a seemingly smaller role can have a bigger impact than we ever imagined.

  • John Travolta’s ‘Grease’ and ‘Pulp Fiction’ Top the Charts on Pluto

John Travolta’s ‘Grease’ and ‘Pulp Fiction’ Top the Charts on Pluto

Two of John Travolta’s most famous movies have topped the charts on Pluto. Grease (1978) and Pulp Fiction (1994) are currently streaming for free and sit at #6 and #7, respectively. Both movies were popular and influential when they debuted, and have stood the test of time, as new generations have discovered both. And the two movies couldn’t be more different, with one being a musical and the other a crime thriller with a non-linear structure.

Travolta was coming off his hit film, Saturday Night Fever in 1977 when Grease opened a year later and became a beloved hit, earning nearly $160 million at the domestic box office on a $6 million budget (not counting releases). The instant classic about a greaser named Danny (Travolta) falling in love with Sandy (Olivia Newton John), a well-to-do girl, cemented his major movie star status, and is considered one of the greatest musicals ever.

By the time Pulp Fiction opened in October 1994, Travolta’s career had more or less stalled out. While Look Who’s Talking had briefly revitalized his career in 1989, the movies released prior and after were mostly forgotten. Director Quentin Tarantino’s classic helped to re-launch Travolta’s career, and he was soon being paid tens of millions of dollars to star in films like Broken Arrow, Michael, and Face/Off.

‘Pulp Fiction’ Recently Celebrated its 30th Anniversary

Pulp Fiction celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2024 with a 4K screening in theaters last October and an Ultra HD Blu-ray and digital release in December. Tarantino’s film defied many cinematic conventions when it debuted at Cannes in 1994, going on to win the Palme d’Or, the prestigious film festival’s top award.

While the 1990s saw the rise of the indie / art house feature, Pulp Fiction stood apart from other famous films released that decade, including El Mariachi, Gas Food Lodging, Clerks, The Usual Suspects, Fargo, and others. Its ode to crime pulp stories and non-linear narrative entranced both audiences and critics alike, and currently sits at 92% critical and 96% audience Fresh ratings at Rotten Tomatoes.

Why Quentin Tarantino Abandoning The Movie Critic Is Actually Good News

If Quentin Tarantino is only going to direct 10 movies, then his final one needs to be one of his best, not a sequel to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Pulp Fiction’s influence also spawned a slew of copycats, including Things to Do in Denver When You’re Dead and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. Even Go (1999), directed by Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity) and written by John August (Big Fish) shares similar narratives and non-linear structure.

And unlike his peers, Tarantino never became a fully mainstream director, choosing instead to focus on films like Jackie Brown, Kill Bill Vols. 1 and 2 (he considers them one film in two parts), and Django Unchained. He has claimed he will direct only one more film following his ninth, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which debuted in 2019.

There isn’t any word on what his tenth and final film will be, following his abandoning of The Critic earlier in 2024. The film, set in the 1970s, had Brad Pitt starring and followed a film critic who wrote for a magazine like Playboy, and was inspired by Pauline Kael, an influential critic.

You can make it a John Travolta double feature with Grease and Pulp Fiction which are both streaming free on Pluto.

In a surprising turn of events, John Travolta’s iconic films ‘Grease’ and ‘Pulp Fiction’ have skyrocketed to the top of the charts on Pluto. Despite being released decades ago, these two movies have captured the hearts of Plutonians and are now considered classics in their own right.

‘Grease’ is a beloved musical that follows the romance between Danny Zuko (Travolta) and Sandy Olsson (Olivia Newton-John) as they navigate the ups and downs of high school love. The catchy songs and vibrant dance numbers have made ‘Grease’ a timeless favorite among audiences of all ages.

On the other hand, ‘Pulp Fiction’ is a gritty and groundbreaking film directed by Quentin Tarantino, in which Travolta plays the role of Vincent Vega, a hitman with a penchant for dancing. The film’s nonlinear storyline, sharp dialogue, and memorable characters have solidified its status as a modern classic.

It seems that the residents of Pluto have a keen appreciation for Travolta’s diverse talents as an actor, from his smooth moves in ‘Grease’ to his intense performance in ‘Pulp Fiction’. These films continue to resonate with audiences across galaxies, proving that good storytelling knows no bounds.

These two larger-than-life characters captured the imagination of readers with their thrilling adventures and uncanny abilities. But what set these characters apart from other pulp heroes of the time?

One key factor was their publisher, Street & Smith. This publishing house was known for producing high-quality pulp magazines that featured top-tier writing and thrilling stories. The Shadow and Doc Savage were both born out of the creative minds at Street & Smith, and their success was a testament to the publisher’s ability to create engaging and compelling characters.

With his ability to cloud men’s minds and his mastery of disguise, The Shadow struck fear into the hearts of criminals everywhere. Created by Walter B. Gibson, The Shadow became one of the most popular pulp heroes of the 1930s and 40s.

Doc Savage, on the other hand, was a scientific genius and master of multiple disciplines. Raised from birth to be the pinnacle of human achievement, Doc Savage traveled the world with his team of experts, solving mysteries and battling evil wherever he went. Created by Lester Dent, Doc Savage embodied the ideals of strength, intelligence, and justice.

The Evolution of Paperback: From Pulp Fiction to Bestsellers

Paperback books have come a long way since their humble beginnings as cheaply produced pulpy fiction. Today, they are a staple in the publishing industry, with bestsellers being released in paperback format alongside their hardcover counterparts. But how did we get here? Let’s take a look at the evolution of the paperback book.

The concept of the paperback book dates back to the 19th century, when publishers began releasing small, cheaply produced books in response to the high cost of hardcover editions. These early paperbacks were often referred to as “penny dreadfuls” or “dime novels,” and were typically filled with sensationalist stories of crime, adventure, and romance.

In the early 20th century, the paperback industry began to take off with the introduction of the mass-market paperback. These books were printed on cheap paper and featured colorful, eye-catching covers designed to attract readers. Publishers like Pocket Books and Penguin Books became known for their affordable and portable paperbacks, making reading more accessible to the masses.

During the mid-20th century, paperbacks saw a surge in popularity with the rise of pulp fiction and genre fiction. Authors like Agatha Christie, Ian Fleming, and Mickey Spillane became household names thanks to their paperback bestsellers. Paperbacks were also popular among soldiers during World War II, with publishers releasing pocket-sized editions for easy transport.

In the 1960s and 1970s, paperbacks continued to evolve with the rise of the mass-market paperback bestseller. Authors like Stephen King, Danielle Steel, and John Grisham found success in the paperback format, reaching a wider audience and becoming household names in the process. Paperback bestsellers became a cultural phenomenon, with readers eagerly awaiting the next installment in their favorite series.

Today, paperbacks continue to be a popular choice for readers looking for affordable and portable books. The Evolution of Paperback Publishing: From Pulp Fiction to Bestsellers

Paperback publishing has come a long way since its humble beginnings in the early 20th century. What started as a way to make literature more affordable and accessible to the masses has evolved into a multi-billion dollar industry that dominates the book market.

The history of paperback publishing can be traced back to the pulp fiction magazines of the 1930s and 40s. These magazines were cheaply produced and featured lurid, sensationalist stories that catered to the tastes of the working class. The stories were printed on cheap, low-quality paper and sold for as little as a dime, making them accessible to a wide audience.

As the popularity of pulp fiction grew, publishers began to experiment with releasing novels in paperback format. In 1939, Pocket Books introduced the first mass-market paperback, with a price of just 25 cents. This revolutionary new format allowed publishers to reach a much larger audience than ever before, and paved the way for the paperback revolution that would follow.

Throughout the 1950s and 60s, paperback publishing exploded in popularity, with millions of titles being printed and sold each year. Paperbacks became a staple in bookstores and newsstands, and were embraced by readers of all ages and backgrounds. The success of paperback publishing was due in part to the growing popularity of genre fiction such as science fiction, romance, and mystery, which lent themselves well to the paperback format.

In the 1970s and 80s, the rise of bestseller lists and book clubs further boosted the popularity of paperback publishing. Readers flocked to bookstores to pick up the latest bestsellers in paperback format, and publishers began to invest more heavily in marketing and promotion to capitalize on the trend. Authors such as Stephen King, Danielle Steel, and John Grisham became household names thanks to the success of their paperback novels.

Today, paperback publishing continues to thrive, with millions of titles being published each year in a wide range of genres and formats. While e-books and audiobooks have become increasingly popular in recent years, the paperback format remains a beloved staple of the publishing industry. Readers continue to appreciate the affordability and portability of paperbacks, as well as the tactile experience of holding a physical book in their hands.

In conclusion, the evolution of paperback publishing from pulp fiction to bestsellers is a testament to the enduring popularity of the format. From its humble beginnings in the 1930s to its current status as a multi-billion dollar industry, paperback publishing has played a crucial role in making literature accessible to readers around the world. Whether you prefer to read on a screen or turn the pages of a physical book, there’s no denying the lasting impact of paperback publishing on the world of literature.
