  • MLB rumors: Cubs pursuing Ryan Pressly, Blue Jays eyeing Pete Alonso, Dodgers still want Clayton Kershaw

In less than a month, spring training camps will open across Arizona and Florida. There are still plenty of free agents waiting to sign and trade candidates waiting to move. There will be no shortage of activity between now and the start of camp. Here now are Thursday’s hot stove happenings.

    Cubs checking in on Pressly

Astros setup man and former closer Ryan Pressly is one year away from free agency and has been said to be on the trade block this offseason. Teams have “checked in” on his availability, according to The Athletic. Further reporting from The Athletic indicates that the Cubs have “emerged as a serious suitor” for Pressly. The two teams would have to finalize a deal and then Pressly would need to waive his no-trade clause in order for a deal to come to fruition, but for now it sounds like a real possibility he’s dealt there.

Pressly was closer for the Astros from 2021-23 and recorded the final out of the World Series in 2022, but he was removed from the role last season in favor of free agent signee Josh Hader

Talks heating up between Alonso, Blue Jays

Talks between free agent first baseman Pete Alonso and the Blue Jays are “advancing,” reports SNY. A deal is not done and there is no guarantee it gets done, but talking is something. Toronto landed Anthony Santander earlier this week and can put him in the outfield full-time, with Alonso and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. sharing first base and DH duty. We ranked Alonso as the 11th-best free agent this winter.

The Mets, Alonso’s longtime team, reportedly offered him a three-year contract worth between $68 million and $70 million earlier this month. Alonso was said to have offered a short-term deal to the Mets and only the Mets, so it’s possible a contract with the Blue Jays would be a long-term agreement. Toronto has had a hard time getting players to take their money the last two years.

    Astros remain engaged with Bregman

Surprisingly, the Astros have not closed the door on an Alex Bregman reunion, reports USA Today. They are not optimistic it will happen, however, and Bregman reportedly has two offers from unknown teams. Re-signing Bregman could push Isaac Paredes to second base and Jose Altuve out to left field. We ranked Bregman as the third-best free agent available this winter.

Houston reportedly offered Bregman six years and $156 million earlier this offseason. When that was declined, they pivoted to Paredes and Christian Walker, who are set to play third and first bases, respectively. According to Cot’s Baseball Contracts, the Astros have a $243 million payroll for competitive balance tax purposes, down comfortably from $264.8 million last year.

    Dodgers remain interested in Kershaw

Even after signing Roki Sasaki and Blake Snell, the Dodgers have interest in re-signing Clayton Kershaw, GM Brandon Gomes said Wednesday (via the Orange County Register). Kershaw had toe and knee surgery in November and is not yet throwing off a mound. Gomes indicated the Dodgers will look to re-sign him once he’s completed his rehab and ready to pitch in MLB games.

The Dodgers have enviable rotation depth, though Tyler Glasnow (elbow) and Yoshinobu Yamamoto (shoulder) missed extended time with injuries last year, and Tony Gonsolin, Dustin May, and Shohei Ohtani did not pitch at all in 2024 as they rehabbed from elbow surgery. Kershaw is a franchise icon and there’s no such thing as too much pitching, especially for a World Series contender.

    Reds pursuing Estévez

The Reds are in talks with righty Carlos Estévez, according to USA Today. The Blue Jays and Cubs were said to be in the mix for the free-agent reliever earlier this week. José Leclerc (Athletics), A.J. Minter (Mets), Tanner Scott (Dodgers), and Paul Sewald (Guardians) have all agreed to deals within the last week. The reliever market is beginning to pick up.

Cincinnati already has a pretty good closer in Alexis Díaz, though there is no such thing as too many good relievers, and the bullpen was a sore spot in 2024. With three wild-card spots per league, you don’t have to try too hard to see the Reds making a run at a postseason berth this season. We ranked Estévez as the 34th-best free agent available this winter.

    Padres, Twins talking Vázquez trade

The Padres and Twins discussed a trade involving catcher Christian Vázquez earlier this offseason, reports The Athletic. A deal is not imminent, though the two sides are said to be motivated to continue talks. It appears the biggest hurdle is how much money Minnesota will eat to facilitate the trade. Vázquez is owed $10 million in 2025, the final year of his contract.

San Diego lost Kyle Higashioka to free agency and, at minimum, need a veteran backup for Luis Campusano. Vázquez has lost his starting job with the Twins to Ryan Jeffers, and Minnesota can slot Jair Camargo in as the backup catcher. For them, trading Vázquez would be a pure salary dump. The Padres, however, are said to be approaching or up against their payroll limit.

    Matzek will have showcase Thursday

Free-agent lefty Tyler Matzek, who starred for the Braves in the 2021 postseason, will throw a showcase for interested teams in California on Thursday, reports MLB.com. Matzek, 34, returned from Tommy John surgery early last season, then was shut down with elbow inflammation in May and did not pitch the rest of the year. He’s healthy now and ready to show teams he can contribute in 2025. If the showcase goes well, a minor-league contract with a contender is likely in the cards.

In the latest MLB rumors, the Chicago Cubs are reportedly pursuing Houston Astros reliever Ryan Pressly in an effort to bolster their bullpen. Pressly, who has been one of the most dominant relievers in the league, would provide a much-needed boost to the Cubs’ pitching staff.

On the other hand, the Toronto Blue Jays are said to be eyeing New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso as a potential trade target. Alonso, who burst onto the scene as a rookie with a record-breaking season in 2019, could provide a powerful presence in the middle of the Blue Jays’ lineup.

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Dodgers are still interested in bringing back longtime ace Clayton Kershaw. Despite ongoing discussions, Kershaw has yet to commit to a new contract with the Dodgers, leaving the door open for other teams to potentially swoop in and sign the future Hall of Famer.

As the MLB offseason heats up, stay tuned for more updates on these and other rumors swirling around the league.

  • Bears ‘Heavily Pursuing’ Darren Rizzi For STs Coordinator

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Bears are “heavily pursuing” former Saints interim head coach Darren Rizzi as their special teams coach under new HC Ben Johnson

    Darren Rizzi

Schefter mentioned that Rizzi has interest from over a half-dozen teams but if he doesn’t land a head coaching job, then Chicago is his potential landing spot.

The Bears are expected to add former Saints HC Dennis Allen as their defensive coordinator, so Johnson’s staff could have some resemblance to the Saints’ former staff under Sean Payton

Rizzi, 54, began his coaching career at Colgate back in 1993. He worked for a number of schools before being hired as Rhode Island’s head coach for the 2008 season.

Rizzi lasted just one year at Rhode Island and led the team to a record of 3-9 before he was replaced. The Dolphins hired Rizzi as their special teams coordinator in 2010.

After several years in Miami, Rizzi departed to become the Saints special teams coordinator in 2019. In 2024, he was promoted to assistant head coach before being named the interim head coach following the firing of Dennis Allen.

In 2024, Rizzi led the Saints to a record of 3-5 as interim head coach, finishing at the bottom of the NFC South.

The Chicago Bears are reportedly “heavily pursuing” Darren Rizzi for their Special Teams Coordinator position. Rizzi, who most recently served as the Special Teams Coordinator for the New Orleans Saints, is highly respected in the league for his expertise in special teams.

The Bears are looking to revamp their special teams unit after a lackluster performance last season. Rizzi’s track record of success and innovative coaching style make him an attractive candidate for the position.

If the Bears are able to secure Rizzi as their Special Teams Coordinator, it could be a game-changer for the team’s special teams unit. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

  • Report: Bears “heavily pursuing” Darren Rizzi for special teams coordinator job

The Bears aren’t wasting any time in putting together a coaching staff after hiring Ben Johnson as head coach.

With Dennis Allen a favorite for the defensive coordinator job, the Saints also are heavily pursuing Darren Rizzi to be their special teams coach, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Rizzi replaced Allen as interim coach with the Saints this season.

Rizzi still is a candidate for two head coaching jobs, with the Jets and the Saints having interview him.

Rizzi, 54, is a longtime special teams coach who went 3-5 as the Saints’ interim head coach. He has 16 years of experience in the NFL, the past six in New Orleans.

Schefter reports that Rizzi has interest in “over a half-dozen teams” with Chicago as the potential landing spot.

The Chicago Bears are reportedly “heavily pursuing” former Miami Dolphins special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi for the same position on their coaching staff. Rizzi, who spent 10 seasons with the Dolphins before parting ways with the team earlier this year, is highly regarded for his work on special teams.

The Bears have been in need of a new special teams coordinator since Chris Tabor left to join the Cleveland Browns coaching staff. Rizzi’s experience and track record of success make him an attractive candidate for the position.

Rizzi is known for his innovative and aggressive approach to special teams, and his units have consistently ranked among the best in the league. His ability to develop and coach young players has also been praised, making him a valuable asset for any team.

It remains to be seen if Rizzi will ultimately accept the Bears’ offer, but the team’s strong interest in him signals their commitment to improving their special teams unit. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.

  • Why Yankees Aren’t Pursuing Top Left-Handed Reliever Tanner Scott

All indications are that the New York Yankees‘ top priority at this point in the offseason is signing a left-handed reliever.

The Athletic’s Brendan Kuty revealed in a January 15 article that there are three southpaws the Yankees have expressed interest in.

“As of Tuesday, the team’s biggest priority seemed to be adding a left-handed reliever, with names such as Tim Hill, Brooks Raley and Andrew Chafin each being discussed, according to a league source,” Kuty wrote.

While all three of these relievers would be great additions for the Yankees, conspicuous by his absence is Tanner Scott. During the 2024 regular season with the Miami Marlins and San Diego Padres, Scott posted a 9-6 record with a 1.75 ERA and 84 strikeouts in 72 innings pitched.

The Yankees reportedly met with Scott earlier this month. However, a January 16 article from MLB.com conveyed why he isn’t currently among their top left-handed relief targets.

“The top reliever left on the open market, Tanner Scott, is also left-handed. But with the Yankees’ estimated luxury tax payroll at about $303 million, per FanGraphs’ Roster Resource — which is slightly above the highest luxury tax threshold for the 2025 season — they seem to be looking at more cost-effective arms such as that aforementioned trio,” the article wrote.

“The Yankees could give themselves some financial flexibility by trading starting pitcher Marcus Stroman, who is owed $18.5 million this season and has an $18 million vesting option for 2026… Even if they do find a match, they could use those savings to address their opening at second base rather than bring in a top-flight reliever.”

This money-saving sentiment certainly makes sense, especially considering the Yankees already traded for elite closer Devin Williams this offseason (and also still have Luke Weaver).

But New York fans would not have complained if Scott was also brought to the Bronx.

There has been much speculation and anticipation surrounding the New York Yankees’ pursuit of top left-handed reliever Tanner Scott. However, it appears that the Yankees are not actively pursuing Scott for a number of reasons.

One of the main reasons for the Yankees’ lack of pursuit of Scott is their current bullpen depth. The Yankees already boast a strong bullpen, with left-handed relievers like Zack Britton and Aroldis Chapman anchoring the group. Adding Scott to the mix would likely be redundant and unnecessary, especially considering the hefty contract he would likely demand.

Additionally, Scott’s inconsistent performance and high walk rate may be a cause for concern for the Yankees. While Scott has shown flashes of brilliance on the mound, his lack of control and tendency to give up free passes could be a liability in high-pressure situations, particularly in the postseason.

Furthermore, the Yankees may be focusing their attention and resources on other areas of need, such as starting pitching or infield depth. With limited financial flexibility and a competitive free agent market, the Yankees may be prioritizing other areas of their roster over adding another left-handed reliever.

Overall, while Tanner Scott is undoubtedly a talented pitcher, it seems that the Yankees have chosen to pass on pursuing him for the time being. Only time will tell if this decision pays off for the Bronx Bombers in the long run.

  • Q&A: Eric Dickerson on Saquon Barkley pursuing his record: ‘I don’t think he’ll break it’

Q&A: Eric Dickerson on Saquon Barkley pursuing his record: ‘I don’t think he’ll break it’

The NFL single-season rushing record has stood for 40 years, far longer than Saquon Barkley has been on this planet.

But now, with two games to play, the Philadelphia Eagles running back is 268 yards from eclipsing the mark of Hall of Famer Eric Dickerson, who set the league record of 2,105 with the Rams in 1984.

Barkley, 27, who signed with the Eagles last offseason after spending the first part of his career with the rival New York Giants, is also 162 yards from becoming the ninth player to run for 2,000 yards in a season.

The other seven are Adrian Peterson (2,097 with Minnesota in 2012), Jamal Lewis (2,066 with Baltimore in 2003), Barry Sanders (2,053 with Detroit in 1997), Derrick Henry (2027 with Tennessee in 2020), Terrell Davis (2,008 with Denver in 1998), Chris Johnson (2,006 with Tennessee in 2009) and O.J. Simpson (2,003 with Buffalo in 1973).

The Eagles finish the regular season with home games against the Dallas Cowboys and the Giants.

Dickerson spoke to The Times this week about Barkley, running backs in general, the Rams and the thought of his longstanding record going away:

How do you feel about the possibility of Barkley breaking your single-season rushing record?

I don’t think he’ll break it. But if he breaks it, he breaks it. Do I want him to break it? Absolutely not. I don’t pull no punches on that. But I’m not whining about it. He had 17 games to do it? Hey, football is football. That’s the way I look at it. If he’s fortunate to get over 2,000 yards and get the record, it’s a great record to have.

So the 17 games part doesn’t bother you, even though you set it with 16 games?

O.J. Simpson was my favorite player. He went over 2,000 yards in 14 games. It took me 15 games to get to 2,000. I had one extra game to play. Getting to 2,000 is an accomplishment in itself. I got close to that three other times.

Do you look at it from the perspective that the record is eventually going to fall?

I’ve always said that the one that’s going to last the longest is me setting the rookie record with 1,808. Because you only get one shot at that. You’re only a rookie once.

What do you think of Barkley as a back?

I like him. But I tend to like big backs. He’s not a big back like I was. He’s elusive, he’s tough, he runs hard, he can catch the ball out of the backfield. I think he’s a great player.

I always felt like he’d never reach his potential when he was in New York. You could take Emmitt Smith and put him in Cleveland, and he’d have never been the Emmitt Smith we know now.

    So it’s location, location, location?

Yes. Even myself. If you’d have put me in Cincinnati on a bad team, I’d have never been that guy. Because these bad football teams with no blocking, I don’t care how great you are. If you don’t have the guys in front of you, you can’t do it.

And that’s why you go to those lengths to thank your blockers?

I saw what [San Francisco quarterback] Brock Purdy did with his offensive line, buying them those Tundras. I got a text from Jackie [Slater, Hall of Fame Rams tackle], “Hey, man, where’s my Tundra?” I told him I was making $175,000 at the time. I could afford about two Tundras and be broke.

Will you be tuned in to watch Barkley?

I don’t sit down and watch games, except the Rams, and I work for the team. But I’ll have no choice but to keep up with it because I get so many text messages. People blowing up my phone like, “Man, it’s not fair. He gets 17 games,” or, “We’re going to put a hex on him.”

Any thoughts on Rams running back Kyren Williams?

I like him as a back. He’s able to carry the ball 29, 28, 27 times. That takes a toll on you. I was able to do it, but there’s very few backs that are able to do that. He’s not a real big guy, so that says a lot about him as a player, and what Sean McVay thinks of him. I look at McVay and think he’s done a fantastic job of coaching this team.

Do you think McVay should be in the Coach of the Year conversation?

Of course he does. He probably won’t get it because they’re going to give it to a coach who’s 15-2 or 14-3. But McVay has a young team, a team that at one point was decimated by injuries. They lost [four of five] and weren’t looking good. And right now they’re in position to win the NFC West. What else does it take [to win Coach of the Year]?

Saquon Barkley, left, runs with the ball past Rams safety Quentin LakeSaquon Barkley, left, runs with the ball past Rams safety Quentin Lake

The Eagles’ Saquon Barkley runs past Rams safety Quentin Lake in November. He ran for 255 yards against the Rams. (Wally Skalij / Los Angeles Times)

Back to Barkley, are you surprised the Giants let him go?

Let me tell you something. When you look at certain people who run these teams, some of these guys have as much sense as me being the president of the United States. That’s about how much they should be running a football team.

In my contract, when the Rams traded me to the Colts, did you know I couldn’t come back to the NFC for five years? They put that clause in there.

The Eagles finish the regular season against the Giants. If the record is up for grabs…

A real team would be like, “Oh no, you ain’t gonna get that record on us.” But how ironic would it be for him to break the record on them, the team that let him go. A true slap in the face.

This story originally appeared in Los Angeles Times.

Recently, former NFL running back Eric Dickerson sat down for a Q&A session and shared his thoughts on current New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley’s pursuit of his single-season rushing record. Dickerson set the record in 1984 with 2,105 rushing yards, a mark that has stood for over three decades.

When asked about Barkley’s chances of breaking his record, Dickerson was candid in his response. “I don’t think he’ll break it,” Dickerson said. “It’s a tough record to beat, and there are so many factors that come into play. Saquon is a talented player, no doubt about it, but it takes a lot of things to go right to have a season like that.”

Dickerson went on to explain that the current landscape of the NFL, with its focus on passing offenses and committee backfields, makes it even more challenging for a running back to reach the heights he did in his prime. “The game has changed since my playing days,” Dickerson said. “Teams are throwing the ball more, and running backs are sharing carries more often. It’s just a different era.”

Despite his doubts about Barkley’s chances of breaking his record, Dickerson expressed admiration for the young running back. “Saquon is a special talent, no question about it,” Dickerson said. “He’s got the speed, the power, the vision – all the tools you need to be successful. But breaking the record is no easy feat, and I’m not sure he’ll be able to do it.”

As Barkley continues his quest to etch his name in the record books, fans will be watching closely to see if he can defy the odds and surpass Dickerson’s impressive mark. Only time will tell if the young star can make history, but one thing is for sure – he’ll have to work hard to prove Dickerson wrong.
