ASB Classic updates day four: Madison Keys seals quarter-final spot

Montgomery never allowed a break point while converting four of her own, easing through with a 6-2, 6-2 victory to become the fourth American in the quarter-finals.

    Bizarre call in Keys-Cristian match

Strange scenes in the opening game of the match between top seed Madison Keys and Jaqueline Cristian of Romania.

At 40-15 Keys reviewed a Cristian return with the replay showing the ball went over the line, and the graphic saying ‘in’.

Keys went to question the call which the umpire who confirmed it an error with the graphic. A similar issue occurred during the opening doubles match of the day.

“The ball was in but the wrong graphic was shown,” the umpire confirmed.

“Well now I don’t trust that’s it,” Keys told the umpire.

Keys lost the next point but eventually won the game.

The issue was worse in the doubles match which started Thursday’s action on centrecourt. In the first point of the third set super tiebreak, a ball was called out by the automated system, despite the graphic showing it was in.

It caused a delay of three or four minutes, as Clara Tauson and Sloane Stephens – who had lost the point – remonstrated for a prolonged period with the umpire.

”On the computer it is saying in so we have to go with that,” said the official repeatedly, much to the bemusement of the players and also some in the crowd.

The umpire explained that the system had displayed the wrong graphic.

The fully automated system, which has replaced the traditional human line judges, is new at the ASB Classic this year.

    Delayed start on Grandstand

1pm: The start time of the Keys-Cristian round of 16 clash is being pushed back with a doubles match currently taking place. Rebecca Marino and Tara Moore have forced a super tie-break against Sloane Stephens and Clara Tauson.

Stephens and Tauson eventually take it out 6-4, 3-6, 10-7.

    Singles schedule for the day

Top seed Madison Keys leads off the day against world number 85 Jaqueline Cristian. The winner of which will play fifth seed Clara Tauson in the quarter-finals.

1-Madison Keys (USA) v Jaqueline Cristian (Romania), 1pm

Followed by Nao Hibino (Japan) v Robin Montgomery (USA)

Greet Minnen (Germany) v Alycia Parks (USA), 6.30pm

Hailey Baptiste (USA) v Jodie Burrage (Great Britain), 7.40pm*

In an intense match on day four of the ASB Classic, Madison Keys battled her way to a quarter-final spot with a hard-fought win. The American tennis star showed her strength and determination on the court, defeating her opponent in a thrilling match that kept fans on the edge of their seats.

Ohio State vs. Oregon score, live updates: College Football Playoff quarterfinal at the Rose Bowl

We’re ringing in 2025 with two College Football Playoff games.

Penn State got the quarterfinals started Tuesday with a 31-14 win over Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl. Texas joined PSU in the semifinals Wednesday afternoon with a dramatic double-overtime win over Arizona State in the Peach Bowl. Who will be joining them from the Rose Bowl?

The final game of the quarterfinals — the Sugar Bowl showdown between Georgia and Notre Dame — was postponed to Thursday after a terrorist attack on Bourbon Street in New Orleans in the early hours of Jan. 1 left at least 10 dead and dozens of others injured.

Follow Wednesday’s late game below (scroll for live updates).

    Date: Jan. 1 | Time: 5 p.m. ET | TV: ESPN | Line: Ohio State -2.5 | Total: 55.5

How loose is Ohio State? The Buckeyes looked like a totally different team against the Volunteers than they did against Michigan. The offensive stats from the matchup between Ohio State and Oregon on Oct. 12 were almost identical. The big separator between the teams came via penalties and turnovers. Which team will come out on top in the rematch?

  • Quinshon Judkins unsure of 2025 return to Ohio State as Buckeyes prep for CFP quarterfinal against Oregon

Quinshon Judkins unsure of 2025 return to Ohio State as Buckeyes prep for CFP quarterfinal against Oregon

Quinshon Judkins is the No. 2 running back on CBS Sports’ NFL Draft big board, but the Buckeyes junior hasn’t ruled out a return to Columbus in 2025. Judkins leads Ohio State with 157 carries for 839 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns and is poised for a big workload in the College Football Playoff quarterfinal against Oregon on New Year’s Day.

“No,” Judkins told reporters Saturday when asked if he’s given thought to his future at Ohio State. “As of right now, I’m just looking forward to this next game and trying to win it all.”

Judkins carried the ball 10 times for 34 yards and two touchdowns and caught two passes for nine yards in Ohio State’s 42-17 win over Tennessee in the first round of the CFP. The Ole Miss transfer rushed 11 teams for a season-low 23 yards and one score in the Week 7 loss at Oregon.

“When you look at the past game that we played against Oregon, and you watch the film over their last couple of games, you’re looking to see how they improved,” Judkins said. “What did they really change about their defense? It looks similar to the first time we played them. So, we just got to go and execute. Our coaches will find ways to get all the playmakers the ball and get us in the best position to score.”

Ohio State added former West Virginia running back CJ Donaldson in the transfer portal during the winter window. He’s expected to split carries with second-year back James Peoples in 2025 if Judkins opts to leave school for the NFL Draft. Senior TreVeyon Henderson is out of eligibility after the Buckeyes’ CFP run.

Donaldson ranks as the No. 6 running back and No. 106 overall player in the transfer portal after a three-year stint at West Virginia. The 6-foot-2, 238-pounder carried the ball 163 times for 734 yards and a team-high 11 touchdowns in 13 games as a junior in 2024. He caught 14 balls for 104 yards and another score en route to All-Big 12 Honorable Mention honors.

Ohio State added three running backs in its 2025 recruiting class, including four-star prospect Bo Jackson. The Cleveland (Ohio) Villa Angela-St. Joseph product rated as the No. 136 overall prospect and No. 5 running back in his class following a prolific prep career. Jackson rushed for 588 yards and 10 touchdowns in four games as a senior and finished his junior campaign in 2023 with 1,700 rushing yards and 29 touchdowns.

RELATED (VIP): Two of the top defensive prospects in the South were very impressed with Ohio State dominating Tennessee

“Bo Jackson is a big downhill runner,” 247Sports Director of Scouting Andrew Ivins said. “He looks like he’s pushing 220 pounds as a senior. It is easy for running backs to play early in their careers. I love what Bo Jackson is able to do in terms of breaking contact. He can provide that downhill force for the Buckeyes as a rookie.”

As the Ohio State Buckeyes gear up for their College Football Playoff quarterfinal showdown against Oregon, one key player’s future with the team remains uncertain. Star running back Quinshon Judkins, who has been a key contributor to the Buckeyes’ success this season, is reportedly unsure if he will return to Ohio State for the 2025 season.

Judkins, a dynamic playmaker with a unique combination of speed and power, has been a key factor in the Buckeyes’ high-powered offense this season. He has rushed for over 1,000 yards and 10 touchdowns, helping lead Ohio State to an impressive 11-1 record and a spot in the CFP.

However, rumors have been swirling that Judkins is considering declaring for the NFL Draft after this season, despite having one more year of eligibility remaining. The talented running back has been projected as a potential early-round pick, and the lure of playing at the next level may be too enticing to pass up.

As the Buckeyes prepare to face off against Oregon in the CFP quarterfinal, Judkins’ future with the team remains a hot topic of conversation among fans and analysts alike. Will he choose to return to Ohio State for another season, or will he take his talents to the NFL? Only time will tell, but one thing is for certain – Judkins’ decision will have a major impact on the Buckeyes’ future success.

  • College Football Playoff picks, schedule: Predictions against the spread, odds for quarterfinal bowl games

College Football Playoff picks, schedule: Predictions against the spread, odds for quarterfinal bowl games

The College Football Playoff field has been whittled down to eight teams as we continue moving through the first-ever 12-team bracket. Across New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, those teams remaining will do battle at traditional New Year’s Six bowl sites for the right to move on to the semifinals as we inch closer toward crowning a national champion for the 2024 season. The first-round games left plenty to be desired in the form of excitement, but the hope is the quarterfinals will deliver.

The three-game slate on Wednesday kicks off with 5-seed Texas battling 4-seed Arizona State in the Peach Bowl before we move to a monumental rematch in the Rose Bowl featuring 8-seed Ohio State clashes with 1-seed Oregon. Finally, the quarterfinal action wraps up with 7-seed Notre Dame battling 2-seed Georgia in the Sugar Bowl.

The action started Tuesday when 6-seed Penn State ran away from 3-seed Boise State to secure a Fiesta Bowl victory and semifinal berth.

CBS Sports experts have filed their picks for the quarterfinal round of the College Football Playoff, so let’s have a look at what to expect this weekend.

    All times Eastern

Peach Bowl: (5) Texas vs. (4) Arizona State

1 p.m. | ESPN, fubo (Try for free) — Arizona State’s ability to win at the margins has been a key to their success this season, and I think it will be the path to keeping things close against a Texas team that has a tendency to leave points on the table in the red zone. Thanks to key playmaking from Cam Skattebo and timely stops from a defense that has put together a good stat profile against the pass, the Sun Devils should be able to keep the game tight. Pick: Arizona State +13.5 — Chip Patterson

Rose Bowl: (8) Ohio State vs. (1) Oregon

5 p.m. | ESPN, fubo (Try for free) — The style of play in the first meeting wasn’t a fluke. In fact, it could be argued both offenses left a few points on the board. We’ve seen a lot of high-scoring games in recent years when elite teams meet. Given all the stars on the offensive side of the ball for both teams, it makes sense. The Granddaddy of Them All promises to be another high-scoring affair. Pick: Over 55 — Tom Fornelli

Sugar Bowl: (7) Notre Dame vs. (2) Georgia

8:45 p.m. (Thursday) | ESPN, fubo (Try for free) — Georgia is the slight favorite, according to the SportsLine consensus, which gives me pause. The Bulldogs enter the playoff 1-9 against the spread as the favorite this season. There’s no doubt Georgia played a more difficult schedule than Notre Dame, and the grind was noticeable with two overtime wins to end the season, but one does wonder if the Bulldogs are allowing opponents to better dictate the tempo of those games, resulting in closer-than-expected results. Gunner Stockton appears to be a gamer at quarterback, even if he’s not the most talented passer, but that plays into Notre Dame’s hands with one of the nation’s best pass defenses. Everything points to a Notre Dame win, even with Kirby Smart’s knack in preparing his teams for playoff runs. Pick: Notre Dame +1.5 — Brandon Marcello

Fiesta Bowl: (6) Penn State vs. (3) Boise State

7:30 p.m. (Tuesday) | ESPN, fubo (Try for free) — Penn State was able to take advantage of miscues from SMU in the first round, but the Broncos rarely make mistakes. In fact, Boise State is tied for No. 2 nationally in turnovers lost with only four fumbles and four interceptions. Even the steady Nittany Lions had 13 turnovers. Ultimately, it means the game will stay closer than expected for four quarters. Pick: Boise State +11 — Shehan Jeyarajah

With the College Football Playoff quarterfinal bowl games just around the corner, it’s time to make some predictions against the spread and take a look at the odds for each matchup. Here are my picks for the upcoming games:

    1. Cotton Bowl – Alabama vs. Michigan
    Spread: Alabama -7.5
Prediction: Alabama wins and covers the spread
    Odds: Alabama -250, Michigan +200

    2. Orange Bowl – Georgia vs. Notre Dame
    Spread: Georgia -10.5
Prediction: Georgia wins but Notre Dame covers the spread
Odds: Georgia -400, Notre Dame +300

    3. Fiesta Bowl – Ohio State vs. Utah
    Spread: Ohio State -6.5
Prediction: Ohio State wins and covers the spread
Odds: Ohio State -280, Utah +220

    4. Peach Bowl – Baylor vs. Ole Miss
    Spread: Baylor -3.5
Prediction: Baylor wins and covers the spread
Odds: Baylor -160, Ole Miss +140

It’s sure to be an exciting round of quarterfinal bowl games, and these matchups are bound to be thrilling to watch. Who do you think will come out on top in each game? Share your predictions in the comments below!

Nick Saban predicts winners and losers for College Football Playoff quarterfinal games

Nick Saban sits on the ESPN College Gameday set prior to the NCAA football game between the Penn State Nittany Lions and the Ohio State Buckeyes at Beaver Stadium in University Park, Pa. on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2024.

Nick Saban sits on the ESPN College Gameday set prior to the NCAA football game between the Penn State Nittany Lions and the Ohio State Buckeyes at Beaver Stadium in University Park, Pa. on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2024.

This story has been updated to add new information related to the postponement of the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans.

Former Alabama Crimson Tide football coach Nick Saban revealed his picks and predictions for the three College Football Playoff quarterfinal matchups on New Year’s Day 2025.

From his perch on ESPN’s “College GameDay” set inside an empty Rose Bowl Stadium Wednesday, Saban made predictions on Ohio State vs. Oregon in Pasadena, as well as Texas vs. Arizona State in the Peach Bowl, and Notre Dame vs. Georgia in the Sugar Bowl.

For the Peach Bowl matchup at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Saban took his former assistant Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns (12-2) to beat the Big 12 champion Sun Devils (11-2).

    Saban said:

Nick Saban predicts Oregon vs Ohio State Rose Bowl winner

The most-hyped matchup of the quarterfinals is in the Rose Bowl where Oregon (13-0) remains the last unbeaten team in college football. The Ducks will meet Ohio State (11-2) in a rematch following a thrilling 32-31 Oregon win back on Oct. 12 in Eugene.

This time around, Saban took the Buckeyes to win.

“I don’t think we should be picking this game until the next round, just so everybody knows. It is what it is, even though it’s two Big Ten teams. To me, they’re the two best teams in the country. But anyway, I think it’s going to be tough for Oregon to bounce back a second time and beat this team again, so I will take Ohio State.”

Kickoff for the Rose Bowl is set for 4 p.m. CT. All College Football Playoff games today will be televised on ESPN.

This article originally appeared on Roll Tide Wire: Nick Saban predicts winners and losers for College Football Playoff quarterfinal games

Nick Saban, the legendary head coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide, has made some bold predictions for the upcoming College Football Playoff quarterfinal games. In a recent press conference, Saban confidently stated his picks for the winners and losers of the highly anticipated matchups.

According to Saban, he believes that Alabama will come out on top against Michigan in a dominating fashion. With his team’s stellar performance throughout the season, Saban is confident that the Crimson Tide will secure a spot in the semifinals.

Saban also predicted that Georgia will defeat Baylor in their quarterfinal game, showcasing their strong defense and explosive offense. The Bulldogs have been a force to be reckoned with this season, and Saban believes they will continue their winning streak in the playoffs.

On the flip side, Saban foresees Clemson falling to Ohio State in a closely contested game. Despite Clemson’s impressive track record, Saban believes that Ohio State’s strong defense and dynamic offense will be too much for the Tigers to handle.

Lastly, Saban predicted that LSU will emerge victorious over Oklahoma in their quarterfinal matchup. With Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow leading the way, Saban believes that LSU’s high-powered offense will outshine Oklahoma’s defense.

While these are just predictions, Saban’s track record as a coach speaks for itself. It will be interesting to see if his picks come to fruition as the College Football Playoff quarterfinal games unfold.

Live updates: Brisbane International, United Cup day six — Australia faces Great Britain as it chases quarterfinal berth

United Cup: De Minaur to play mixed doubles

The Aussies have made a late change to their mixed doubles line-up.

Alex de Minaur will team up with Olivia Gadecki after Matt Ebden and Ellen Perez were initially listed on the team sheet.

The Brits have also made a change with Olivia Nicholls replacing Katie Boulter.

    Nicholls will partner Charles Broom.

The switch made by Great Britain means de Minaur and Boulter won’t have to face each other on opposing sides of the net.

De Minaur and Boulter announced their engagement just prior to Christmas.

Brisbane International: Joint wins first set against Azarenka

Australian 18-year-old Maya Joint is meeting the challenge of playing Victoria Azarenka with relish.

Joint won the first set of the round-of-32 match in a tie-breaker (7/5).

She and Azarenka have traded breaks early in the second set.

United Cup: De Minaur levels tie for Aussies

Alex de Minaur has made sure the mixed doubles is a live rubber with a resounding straight-sets win over Billy Harris.

De Minaur broke the Briton for a fifth time to complete a 6-2, 6-1 victory.

The Aussies are still a chance of reaching the quarterfinals, but it will come down to the mixed doubles.

United Cup: De Minaur keeps powering on

With a hometown crowd cheering him on, Alex De Minaur has gained a double break in the second set to lead 4-1 against Billy Harris.

A de Minaur win will see Australia level the tie against Great Britain at 1-1.

Brisbane International: Aussie Joint takes on Azarenka

It’s still early days, but Aussie young gun Maya Joint is getting on top of Victoria Azarenka in Brisbane.

De Minaur’s partner Katie Boulter had earlier put Great Britain 1-0 ahead following her victory over Olivia Gadecki.

Great Britain has automatically advanced to the quarterfinals, courtesy of Boulter’s straight-sets win, but Australia is still a chance of reaching the knockout stage.

United Cup: De Minaur wins opening service game

Alex de Minaur has relaxed the nerves to win his first service game against Great Britain’s Billy Harris.

Harris had earlier held serve in front of a parochial Ken Rosewall Arena crowd who have — politely — let the Briton know they are behind their local hero de Minaur.

Brisbane International: Kasatkina wins marathon match

The straight-sets win put Great Britain into the quarterfinals, but Australia can still advance — as the top second-placed team in Sydney — via results in the remaining singles and mixed doubles rubbers.

Boulter will now watch on as her partner, Australian men’s number one Alex de Minaur, faces her British teammate Billy Harris.

United Cup: Katie Boulter leads Great Britain to quarter-final

Katie Boulter beat Australia’s Olivia Gadecki in straight sets to ensure Great Britain reached the United Cup quarter-finals in Sydney.

Boulter knew a straight-set victory from any of the three rubbers against the hosts would take GB through as Group F winners.

In the first match of the tie, Boulter won 6-2 6-1 inside 70 minutes to put GB 1-0 up and secure qualification.

Britain had beaten Argentina 2-1 in their opening tie at the event on Tuesday.

“I’ve been trying to avoid all the stats on all this but we were at dinner with [former British number one] Laura Robson last night, and she thankfully told me I had to win in straight sets,” Boulter said.

“So I was feeling the pressure from last night.”

Australia’s Alex de Minaur, who is Boulter’s fiance, faces Billy Harris in the men’s singles before the mixed doubles, but neither result will have an impact on GB’s progression.

Boulter is scheduled to play in the mixed doubles, but De Minaur is not.

Alexander Shevchenko helped Kazakhstan reach the quarter-finals as they knocked out defending champions Germany, who were without world number two Alexander Zverev because of a biceps injury.

Poland also qualified, with Iga Swiatek beating the Czech Republic’s Karolina Muchova.

In a thrilling display of skill and determination, Katie Boulter has led Great Britain to the quarter-finals of the United Cup. The talented tennis player showcased her incredible talent on the court, dominating her opponents and securing crucial wins for her team.

Boulter’s stellar performance has been a driving force behind Great Britain’s success in the tournament, inspiring her teammates and capturing the hearts of fans worldwide. Her unwavering focus and impressive athleticism have been instrumental in propelling her team to the next round of competition.

As Boulter continues to shine on the court, the Great Britain team looks poised for a deep run in the United Cup. With her leadership and exceptional talent, there is no doubt that she will play a key role in their quest for victory.

  • 5 Class of 2025 newcomers practice with team in Arizona for Penn State’s Fiesta Bowl quarterfinal

5 Class of 2025 newcomers practice with team in Arizona for Penn State’s Fiesta Bowl quarterfinal

James Franklin’s 2025 recruiting class is ranked No. 15 in the nation. It features a group, particularly at wide receiver and cornerback, that could make an immediate impact for the Nittany Lions, though, next season not on Tuesday night against Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl College Football Playoff Quarterfinal.

While the freshman newcomers cannot see the field for Penn State with the 2024 season still underway, a few were able to join the team in Arizona for Fiesta Bowl prep, and five 2025 freshmen saw practice reps on Sunday according to BlueWhiteIllustrated.com’s Greg Pickel and other reporters who were out at the Los Angeles Angels spring training facility where the Nittany Lions are practicing.

Offensive linemen Owen Aliciene and Michael Troutman, tight end Brian Kortovich, wide receiver Lyrick Samuel, and walk-on kicker Matthew Parker are all early enrollees who will begin classes in January and were the five newcomers spotted at practice.

According to 247Sports composite recruiting rankings, Aliciene is the most highly-touted prospect of that group, a four-star from Avon, CT, and the 31st-best offensive tackle in the country. Samuel checked in just behind Aliciene, the 6-foot-3 180-pound four-star receiver from Brooklyn, NY is also a consensus four-star and the No. 1 player from his state.

Defensive coordinator Tom Allen told reporters that, “you can’t put a price tag on all those additional reps they’re going to get.” So this group of five, or four if you exclude Parker from the equation, could be the most impactful freshman in the Blue-White Game this spring.

Penn State’s most desperate position of need is wide receiver and while Franklin has done an excellent job addressing it with veterans through the transfer portal, it’s nearly inevitable that one of the three wide receivers Franklin signed in the 2025 class will be a contributor next season. With his early participation, Samuel might have the inside track to regular-season snaps in 2025 over Matthew Outten and Koby Howard, though there is still plenty of time for that to change.

Tyseer Denmark is the only 2024 freshman wide receiver who has been close to contribution, even to a limited group, and even now he’s unlikely to be a fixture in the gameplan for Tuesday night. Penn State might need a strong freshman campaign from at least one wide receiver in 2025, and Samuel’s inclusion in Arizona this week may not mean much, but it certainly isn’t a bad sign.

The anticipation for the Fiesta Bowl quarterfinal game between Penn State and their opponent is building as the team welcomes five new Class of 2025 players to their roster. The newcomers have been practicing with the team in Arizona in preparation for the big game.

The five freshmen are eager to make an impact and show their skills on the field. They have been working hard during practices, learning plays, and getting to know their teammates. The coaching staff is impressed with their dedication and talent, and believe they will be valuable assets to the team in the upcoming game.

The team is focused and determined to come out on top in the Fiesta Bowl quarterfinal. With the addition of these five talented newcomers, they are feeling confident and ready to take on their opponents. Stay tuned for updates on how the newcomers perform in the game and cheer on Penn State as they strive for victory! #WeArePennState #FiestaBowlBound

Rose Bowl Game - Alabama v Michigan
    Getty Images

The 12-team College Football Playoff moves along now that the first-round action is in the books, and a slew of highly anticipated quarterfinal matchups are on deck over the course of New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. While there wasn’t much drama during the first-round slate, the hope is that business picks up as we move to bowl sites and closer to crowning a national champion.

Not only did all four Las Vegas favorites win, but all four covered the spread. The average margin of victory in the first round was 18 points, and teams covered the spread by an average of 10.25 points. It should go without saying, but all four games were decided by at least two possessions.

The quarterfinal round promises to bring a bit more excitement. Few matchups will be more anticipated than the Rose Bowl rematch between (1) Oregon, which had a first-round bye, and (8) Ohio State, which dominated Tennessee to give coach Ryan Day a much-needed signature win.

Two of college football’s most storied programs will face off in the Sugar Bowl as (7) Notre Dame, fresh off a win against Indiana, will play (2) Georgia. The Bulldogs earned a first-round bye after beating Texas — which will play Arizona State in the Peach Bowl — in the SEC Championship Game.

The Fiesta Bowl between (6) Penn State and (3) Boise State could provide some fireworks, as well. Two of the nation’s best players in Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty and Penn State tight end Tyler Warren will take center stage.
