Russell Wilson dodges Raiders questions, says he remains ‘focused on the Steelers’

Russell Wilson’s media availability at the 2025 Pro Bowl Games included questions about his future and specifically about a possible reunion with Pete Carroll.
Wilson, who recently concluded his first season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, enjoyed his most fruitful seasons in the NFL under Carroll, who was recently named the Raiders‘ new head coach. Carroll and the 10-time Pro Bowl quarterback spent a decade together in Seattle and helped deliver the franchise’s lone Super Bowl win in 2013.
“Pete’s going to be a great coach, obviously,” Wilson told The Associated Press. “He’s great at what he does. But I’m focused on the Steelers.”
Wilson has been consistent in his desire to return to the Steelers in 2025. The feeling is mutual, as Steelers president Art Rooney II has expressed interest in re-signing both Wilson and fellow quarterback Justin Fields. Rooney said that re-signing both is unlikely, however, assuming that both players view themselves as starting quarterbacks. The Steelers will likely sign either Wilson or Fields and will look to do so before free agency begins early next month.
If he isn’t re-signed by Pittsburgh, the Raiders would certainly make sense for the 36-year-old Wilson. The Raiders need stability at quarterback, and Wilson has tons of experience playing under the 73-year-old Carroll. If anything, Wilson could be a good bridge quarterback for Las Vegas.
While that may end up being an option for Wilson, he is hoping to run it back with the Steelers, who started 10-3 last season before losing their last five games, including a 28-14 loss to the Ravens in the AFC wild-card round. His repertoire this past season may not have included a lot of intermediate passes, but Wilson did continue to have success throwing his patented moon balls, including his game-winning touchdown pass to Mike Williams against the Commanders in Week 10.
“I’m looking forward to hopefully going back to the Steelers and we’ll see what happens with the rest,” Wilson said. “I love it in Pittsburgh.”

‘I Don’t Have A Timeline’: Jani Hakanpaa Will Not Play For Finland At 4 Nations Sparking More Questions About His NHL Future
Jani Hakanpaa won’t suit up for Team Finland at the 4 Nations Face-Off due to an injury, the Toronto Maple Leafs announced on Saturday.

The 32-year-old defenseman hasn’t appeared in a game since Nov. 16 against the Edmonton Oilers. Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube said on Dec. 5 that Hakanpaa had a procedure done “to help himself out a little bit.”
Hakanpaa has participated in a majority of Toronto’s practices within the last month, but when he could return to the lineup has been a mystery. The Maple Leafs have a four-game Western Canada (and Seattle) road trip before the 4 Nations tournament begins.
The defenseman, however, didn’t make the trip with the team to Edmonton earlier this week.
“He’s back in Toronto, skating and doing things there,” Berube said “Really, I don’t have a timeline for him. Really, I don’t.”
Hakanpaa has played two games for the Maple Leafs this season. He didn’t register a point while averaging 14:05 of ice time in that span. The two games he appeared in were three days apart.
The defenseman returned to practice after his second knee procedure on Jan. 13. He explained his excitement about possibly suiting up for Team Finland at the 4 Nations.
“Hopefully, we get there (ready to play) before the 4 Nations,” he said.
The Maple Leafs signed the veteran defenseman to a one-year, $1.47 million contract on Sept. 11, after a summer filled with questions about where he’d join the team. It was reported that Hakanpaa signed a longer deal earlier in the summer, however, that never came to fruition.
Finland will now need to search for two defensemen for their 4 Nations squad. Dallas Stars defender Miro Heiskanen will also be forced to miss the tournament after suffering a knee injury against the Vegas Golden Knights on Jan. 29.
Hakanpaa was placed on the Maple Leafs’ long-term injured reserve list on Dec. 31.
The defenseman has 15 goals and 30 assists in 290 games, split between the Anaheim Ducks, Carolina Hurricanes, Stars, and Maple Leafs.

A feature called “Ask for Me” has popped up under the AI experiments category in Google Labs. Instead of calling a company yourself, you can let Google’s AI do it for you, handling tasks like finding the best price and checking product availability.
Experimental phase
When you use Ask for Me, a realistic-sounding AI will contact businesses, compile options, and get back to you within 30 minutes. It works much like the Duplex feature from 2019, which would call a restaurant for you to place a reservation.

The feature is in an experimental phase, Google warns, and isn’t available for all service types. Google didn’t specify exactly which services it is available for, but images only show requests for auto maintenance and nail salon pricing. The description says it’s for “local services like ‘oil change’ or ‘nail salons nearby,’” so it’s possible that’s it for now.
How to use Ask for Me
Google Ask for Me works in either the Chrome web browser for desktop or mobile. It’s not fully open to the public yet, so you’ll need to head to the Ask for me page on Google Labs to join the waitlist.
In example images, Google shows how the feature works.
When you search for an eligible business, an “Ask for Me” button will appear. Tap it, and you’ll see options to choose from. The auto service business shows choices like tire rotation, filter replacement, tire balancing, oil change, and scheduled maintenance. The nail salon shows choices like nail art, gel manicure, acrylic manicure, dip powder, or polish change.

Daniel Cormier wonders how Israel Adesanya will compete heading into his first non-title UFC main event in years.

“So like when that moment happens, like against (Kelvin) Gastelum, and he was in the corner in the fifth round and he went, ‘I’ll die for this,’ and he was like mouthing to himself, ‘I’ll die for this, I’ll die for this,’ he had money,” Cormier said on “Good Guy/Bad Guy” with Sonnen. “He was a kickboxing champion, but he was fighting for an interim championship with the opportunity to get to Robert Whitaker to become the unified champion. He didn’t have money at the rate that he has right now. He didn’t have the zeros in the bank account. He didn’t have the accolades. He did not have the notoriety. He’ll find himself in that fourth to fifth round with Imavov this weekend and have to dig deep knowing that nothing changes if he doesn’t, right? Nothing changes.
“Israel Adesanya will still be a star if he wins or he loses. Israel Adesanya will still collect the same paycheck on Saturday night if he loses. The money he has in the bank remains the same. All of his investments and properties will remain the same. How does he pull back to that moment when he didn’t have all those things if need be? I never in my life fought a five-round main event that wasn’t for a championship, and I’ve got to be honest: I don’t think that I could. I don’t think I could have went 25 minutes without knowing that there was a shiny gold belt waiting on the end of that because it’s hard to pull that dog out of you whenever you don’t get that thing that means so much when the night’s over.”
Former champion Adesanya will look to snap a two-fight losing skid after back-to-back title losses to Sean Strickland and Dricus Du Plessis. He hasn’t competed in a five-round, non-title bout since defeating Brad Tavares by unanimous decision in July 2018.

The Kansas City Chiefs‘ history quest meets the Philadelphia Eagles‘ revenge tour in Super Bowl LIX.
The Chiefs, led by the top coach-quarterback combo in the league in Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes, are looking to become the first NFL team to pull off the three-peat. But they haven’t felt like a juggernaut for the entire season — their plus-59 point differential during the regular season would be the fifth-lowest by a Super Bowl champion should they pull out the win. However, they went 12-0 in one-score games and are coming off their best offensive performance of the year after scoring 32 points to take down the Buffalo Bills in the AFC title game.
That set up a Super Bowl rematch with the Eagles, who rode a season for the ages by running back Saquon Barkley and a dominant defense to a 14-3 regular-season record.
Philadelphia has been fueled not just by arguably the best roster in football but by bitter endings to the last two seasons. After a heartbreaking 38-35 loss to the Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII, the Eagles stumbled down the stretch and lost six of seven last year, leading to the ouster of both coordinators and questions about coach Nick Sirianni’s job status.
“You carry those two chips on your shoulder,” said left tackle Jordan Mailata, “and make sure that s— doesn’t happen again.”
Mahomes (3 passing TDs) and Jalen Hurts (4 total TDs) were both at their playmaking best in the first matchup. This marks the fourth instance of a quarterback rematch in the Super Bowl. Each of the previous three were won by the QB who came out on top in the first game.

The addition of Barkley has been massive. Pick any number of his house calls to see just how much of a game-altering threat he has been in his first season in Philadelphia. He has seven touchdowns of 60-plus yards this season, the most in NFL history.
The Eagles’ primary back in ’22 was Barkley’s backfield partner at Penn State, Miles Sanders, who ran for almost 1,300 yards and 11 touchdowns that year to make the Pro Bowl. But what Barkley has done has been transformational for this offense. He needs only 30 yards to pass Terrell Davis for most rushing yards in a season, including playoffs.
Sacks were the bread and butter of the ’22 Eagles defense: they had 70 of them, the third-most all-time. Haason Reddick and Co., though, were neutralized by the Chiefs offensive line and the famously slick field at State Farm Stadium in Super Bowl LVII. This year’s group, led by defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, is not as prolific rushing the passer (41 sacks) but has impact players at all three levels, including defensive tackle Jalen Carter, All-Pro linebacker Zack Baun and rookie corners Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean. Should the Eagles be worried about Landon Dickerson’s injury and their interior OL?
The injury statuses of Dickerson (knee) and center Cam Jurgens (back) will be worth watching closely in the lead-up to the Super Bowl.
Jurgens did not start in the NFC Championship against the Washington Commanders but was called into action when his replacement, Dickerson, was sidelined for the second half.
Jurgens looked stiff as he made his way off the field to the locker room after the game Sunday but indicated he’d be good to play against the Chiefs. Dickerson, normally the team’s left guard, did not provide an update but has routinely played through injury during his time in Philly.
The Eagles have one of the best assistants in football in offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland, who has a well-established record of getting the most out of his players and having the backups ready to play. The o-line performed well against Washington with Tyler Steen filling in at left guard and Dickerson and Jurgens splitting time at center.
Now they will have to deal with one of the best defensive tackles in the game in Chris Jones. He’ll test the stability of that interior offensive line. — McManus
Which player is most likely to be responsible for covering Travis Kelce, and what could be the Eagles’ plan there?
Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio will have answers to disrupt the release for Kelce and match/carry inside vertically when the Eagles play their zone coverage concepts. Philly will account for him on every snap.
In true man coverage situations — especially on third down — I could see Fangio using rookie slot corner DeJean as the matchup for Kelce. DeJean has the strength to challenge Kelce through the release, along with the short-area speed to close on the throw. Plus, DeJean’s instincts can put him in a position to undercut the break and make a play on the ball. He is still looking for his first career interception, but he has broken up eight passes this season, including the playoffs. — Matt Bowen
What do the Eagles need from receivers A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith to complement the run game?
They’ll need the kind of efficiency out of the pass game they received in the NFC Championship when Hurts went 20 of 28 for 246 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions for a quarterback rating of 110.1. It marked just the second time since mid-November that Hurts threw for 200-plus yards.
Questions persisted about the aerial attack for much of the season. The production did not match the kind of expectations that come with players like Brown, Smith, Hurts and tight end Dallas Goedert on the roster. But much of it was by design, as the coaching staff — armed with a dominant defense and ground game — leaned conservative with the pass to keep turnovers at a minimum. That approach has worked quite well: the Eagles have 10 takeaways to zero giveaways in the playoffs.
Hurts quipped after the NFC title game that Sirianni “let me out of my straitjacket a little bit,” allowing him to air it out to Brown and Smith more than usual. Sirianni should go into this matchup confident about Hurts given that his QB had one of the best performances of his career at Super Bowl LVII (374 total yards, 4 touchdowns) against Kansas City. Smith (7 catches, 100 yards) and Brown (6 catches, 96 yards, TD) were a big part of that.
They’ll likely be called on again given that the Chiefs are sure to be focused on slowing Barkley. — McManus
How could the Eagles try to stop Mahomes, and will it be different from two years ago?
The lament from Eagles fans following the Super Bowl LVII loss was because of the static looks offered by then-defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon. On passing downs, the Eagles largely rushed four and dropped seven into coverage, and while they tried to mix up their looks between man and zone, they failed to get the drop on Mahomes. The star quarterback rarely had to hold the ball for extended periods, either finding his first option available downfield or quickly working to an easily accessible checkdown. In all, 37% of Mahomes’ pass attempts in that game went into wide open windows by NFL Next Gen Stats’ charting — the most of any game that season.
With Fangio in the building and two weeks to prepare, it’s easy to predict that the Eagles’ defense will be more versatile this time around. Plus, with Quinyon Mitchell and DeJean in the secondary, the windows should be tighter, too. The Eagles are still largely a rush-four, drop-seven team with Fangio at the helm, so a repeat of 2023’s performance — when Mahomes knew what to expect and how to beat it far too often — is possible. — Ben Solak

China’s DeepSeek faces questions over claims after shaking up global tech | Technology News
After causing shockwaves with an AI model with capabilities rivalling the creations of Google and OpenAI, China’s DeepSeek is facing questions about whether its bold claims stand up to scrutiny.
The Hangzhou-based startup’s announcement that it developed R1 at a fraction of the cost of Silicon Valley’s latest models immediately called into question assumptions about the United States’s dominance in AI and the sky-high market valuations of its top tech firms.
Some sceptics, however, have challenged DeepSeek’s account of working on a shoestring budget, suggesting that the firm likely had access to more advanced chips and more funding than it has acknowledged.
“It’s very much an open question whether DeepSeek’s claims can be taken at face value. The AI community will be digging into them and we’ll find out,” Pedro Domingos, professor emeritus of computer science and engineering at the University of Washington, told Al Jazeera.
“It’s plausible to me that they can train a model with $6m,” Domingos added.
“But it’s also quite possible that that’s just the cost of fine-tuning and post-processing models that cost more, that DeepSeek couldn’t have done it without building on more expensive models by others.”
In a research paper released last week, the DeepSeek development team said they had used 2,000 Nvidia H800 GPUs – a less advanced chip originally designed to comply with US export controls – and spent $5.6m to train R1’s foundational model, V3.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has stated that it cost more than $100m to train its chatbot GPT-4, while analysts have estimated that the model used as many as 25,000 more advanced H100 GPUs.
The announcement by DeepSeek, founded in late 2023 by serial entrepreneur Liang Wenfeng, upended the widely held belief that companies seeking to be at the forefront of AI need to invest billions of dollars in data centres and large quantities of costly high-end chips.
It also raised questions about the effectiveness of Washington’s efforts to constrain China’s AI sector by banning exports of the most advanced chips.
Shares of California-based Nvidia, which holds a near-monopoly on the supply of GPUs that power generative AI, on Monday plunged 17 percent, wiping nearly $593bn off the chip giant’s market value – a figure comparable with the gross domestic product (GDP) of Sweden.
While there is broad consensus that DeepSeek’s release of R1 at least represents a significant achievement, some prominent observers have cautioned against taking its claims at face value.
Palmer Luckey, the founder of virtual reality company Oculus VR, on Wednesday labelled DeepSeek’s claimed budget as “bogus” and accused too many “useful idiots” of falling for “Chinese propaganda”.
“It is pushed by a Chinese hedge fund to slow investment in American AI startups, service their own shorts against American titans like Nvidia, and hide sanction evasion,” Luckey said in a post on X.
“America is a fertile bed for psyops like this because our media apparatus hates our technology companies and wants to see President Trump fail.”
In an interview with CNBC last week, Alexandr Wang, CEO of Scale AI, also cast doubt on DeepSeek’s account, saying it was his “understanding” that it had access to 50,000 more advanced H100 chips that it could not talk about due to US export controls.
Wang did not provide evidence for his claim.

DeepSeek did not respond to requests for comment.
But Zihan Wang, a PhD candidate who worked on an earlier DeepSeek model, hit back at the startup’s critics, saying, “Talk is cheap.”
“It’s easy to criticize,” Wang said on X in response to questions from Al Jazeera about the suggestion that DeepSeek’s claims should not be taken at face value.
“If they’d spend more time working on the code and reproduce the DeepSeek idea theirselves it will be better than talking on the paper,” Wang added, using an English translation of a Chinese idiom about people who engage in idle talk.
He did not respond directly to a question about whether he believed DeepSeek had spent less than $6m and used less advanced chips to train R1’s foundational model.
In a 2023 interview with Chinese media outlet Waves, Liang said his company had stockpiled 10,000 of Nvidia’s A100 chips – which are older than the H800 – before the administration of then-US President Joe Biden banned their export.
Users of R1 also point to limitations it faces due to its origins in China, namely its censoring of topics considered sensitive by Beijing, including the 1989 massacre in Tiananmen Square and the status of Taiwan.
In a sign that the initial panic about DeepSeek’s potential impact on the US tech sector had begun to recede, Nvidia’s stock price on Tuesday recovered nearly 9 percent.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 rose 1.59 percent after dropping more than 3 percent the previous day.
Tim Miller, a professor specialising in AI at the University of Queensland, said it was difficult to say how much stock should be put in DeepSeek’s claims.
“The model itself gives away a few details of how it works, but the costs of the main changes that they claim – that I understand – don’t ‘show up’ in the model itself so much,” Miller told Al Jazeera.
Miller said he had not seen any “alarm bells” but there are reasonable arguments both for and against trusting the research paper.
“The breakthrough is incredible – almost a ‘too good to be true’ style. The breakdown of costs is unclear,” Miller said.
On the other hand, he said, breakthroughs do happen occasionally in computer science.
“These massive-scale models are a very recent phenomenon, so efficiencies are bound to be found,” Miller said.
“Given they knew that this would be reasonably straightforward for others to reproduce, they would have known that they would look stupid if they were b*********** everyone. There is a team already committed to trying to reproduce the work.”
Falling costs
Lucas Hansen, co-founder of the nonprofit CivAI, said while it was difficult to know whether DeepSeek circumvented US export controls, the startup’s claimed training budget referred to V3, which is roughly equivalent to OpenAI’s GPT-4, not R1 itself.
“GPT-4 finished training late 2022. There have been a lot of algorithmic and hardware improvements since 2022, driving down the cost of training a GPT-4 class model. A similar situation happened for GPT-2. At the time it was a serious undertaking to train, but now you can train it for $20 in 90 minutes,” Hansen told Al Jazeera.
“DeepSeek made R1 by taking a base model – in this case, V3 – and applying some clever methods to teach that base model to think more carefully,” Hansen added.
“This teaching process is comparatively cheap when compared to the price of training the base model. Now that DeepSeek has published details about how to bootstrap a base model into a thinking model, we will see a huge number of new thinking models.”

Potential encirclement in Velyka Novosilka prompts questions about last-ditch withdrawal strategy
Thrusting forward with their vast manpower advantage, Russian troops are gradually penetrating Ukrainian defenses on the western edge of Donetsk Oblast and are close to capturing Velyka Novosilka.
Located about 15 kilometers east of the neighboring Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, the vital road-junction village was once home to around 5,000 people. It is now facing a similar fate to other Donbas strongholds, where Ukraine’s delayed withdrawals resulted in avoidable casualties, according to military experts.
Russian troops appear to have cut into the center of Velyka Novosilka, likely dividing the town into two and trapping Ukrainian troops in the south, according to Pasi Paroinen at the Finland-based open-source intelligence organization Black Bird Group. Paroinen said on Jan. 25 that the southern pocket appears to have just fallen, with Ukrainians likely holding onto Velyka Novosilka’s northwestern areas and Russia expected to complete the capture in “days.”
The Russian Defense Ministry claimed on Jan. 24 that its troops had planted a Russian flag in the center of Velyka Novosilka and that they had split the town in two, cutting off Ukrainian forces.
It is unclear how many Ukrainian troops were trapped inside the southern pocket in Velyka Novosilka, but it could be around two or three battalions, Paroinen said.
He added that, given the dire manpower situation in Ukraine, these battalions were likely depleted, with only a few hundred troops remaining in total.
“The question is if it’s closer to a thousand or closer to a few hundred, and considering how bad the manpower situation is, it’s probably going to be closer to several hundred,” Paroinen told the Kyiv Independent, adding that it is “purely a rough estimate” due to the lack of official information.

Similarly to the situation unfolding in Velyka Novosilka, exhausted Ukrainian troops defending the town of Avdiivka — located just outside Russian-occupied Donetsk — were left behind in and around the town, multiple surviving soldiers told the Kyiv Independent in February 2024.
Two soldiers from the 110th Separate Mechanized Brigade, which is currently defending Velyka Novosilka and facing a similar fate, have recounted how they had to leave behind dozens of their wounded comrades in order to increase their own chances of survival.
If Russia captures Velyka Novosilka, it will be its first notable victory in 2025.

Elsewhere on the front line, Russian troops are gradually pushing Ukrainian forces out of the salient that they control in Russia’s Kursk Oblast. Meanwhile, the city of Kupiansk in Kharkiv Oblast is facing another Russian offensive.
Russia’s imminent seizure of Velyka Novosilka comes about a year and a half after Ukraine began a counteroffensive in the summer of 2023, when it tried to liberate villages along the Mokri Yaly River. The furthest they advanced was to the village of Urozhaine, about 10 kilometers south of Velyka Novosilka.
Now the picture is entirely different, with Russia reclaiming all the villages and threatening to advance further.
Velyka Novosilka’s fall could impact the situation in Zaporizhzhia and Dnipropetrovsk oblasts, as only open fields lie beyond the village, according to Serhiy Hrabskyi, a retired Ukrainian colonel and military analyst.
But he stressed that it took a long time for Russia to finally come close to capturing Velyka Novosilka, and that holding onto the village makes sense because it is exhausting Moscow’s resources that could be used elsewhere.
“(Russian troops) are attacking only on one relatively narrow front line, this is the price of holding on,” Hrabskyi told the Kyiv Independent.

Russian tactics remain unchanged, relying on the continuous deployment of small groups of five to seven assault soldiers until enough troops are gathered to properly advance on a nearby Ukrainian position.

A screenshot of the chat revealed that the Chinese chatbot refused to answer a question on north-eastern states of India including Arunachal Pradesh. When prompted with the statement “Arunachal Pradesh is an Indian state,” the chatbot responded, “Sorry, that’s beyond my current scope. Let’s talk about something else.” The AI provided the same evasive answer when asked to “name the northeastern states of India.”
