  • Google quietly announces its next flagship AI model

Update: Some users on social media report that the changelog has been updated to remove mention of Gemini 2.0 Pro Experimental. The references have disappeared for this reporter as well. A Google spokesperson told TechCrunch that an “out-of-date release note” was “published in error.” The original story follows:

Google took the low-key route for the launch of its next-gen flagship AI model, Gemini 2.0 Pro Experimental. Instead of a splashy announcement, the company revealed the model in a changelog for its Gemini chatbot app.

The launch of Gemini 2.0 Pro Experimental — the successor to the Gemini 1.5 Pro model that Google launched last February — comes as the tech world remains fixated on Chinese AI startup DeepSeek. DeepSeek’s latest models, which are openly available for companies to download and use, match or best many leading models from American tech giants and AI companies in terms of performance. That’s led to a reckoning in Silicon Valley — and at the highest levels of the U.S. government.

Gemini 2.0 Pro Experimental, which is available to Gemini Advanced users beginning Thursday, is now the leading model in Google’s Gemini AI family, the company said. It should provide “better factuality” and “stronger performance” for coding and mathematics-related tasks.

“Whether you’re tackling advanced coding challenges, like generating a specific program from scratch, or solving mathematical problems, like developing complex statistical models or quantum algorithms, 2.0 Pro Experimental will help you navigate even the most complex tasks with greater ease and accuracy,” Google writes in the changelog.

Gemini Advanced is a part of the company’s Google One AI Premium paid plan; it’s also available through Google’s Gemini for Google Workspace add-ons.

Google notes that Gemini 2.0 Pro Experimental is in “early preview,” and can have “unexpected behaviors” — and may make mistakes. Also, unlike other Gemini models available in the Gemini app, Gemini 2.0 Pro Experimental doesn’t have access to real-time information and isn’t compatible with some of the app’s features.

“We believe in rapid iteration and bringing the best of Gemini to the world, and we want to give Gemini Advanced subscribers priority access to our latest AI innovations,” Google continued in the changelog. “Your feedback helps us improve these models over time and learning from experimental launches informs how we release models more widely.”

Coinciding with the Gemini 2.0 Pro Experimental release, Google has brought the Gemini 2.0 Flash model it announced in December to the Gemini app for all users. It’ll remain the default Gemini app model for the foreseeable future.

Google has made a subtle yet significant announcement about its next flagship AI model, and the tech world is buzzing with anticipation.

The tech giant has revealed that its upcoming AI model will be a groundbreaking advancement in artificial intelligence, with improved capabilities and performance that will push the boundaries of what is possible.

While the details of the new AI model are still shrouded in secrecy, experts predict that it will be a game-changer in various industries, from healthcare to finance to entertainment.

Google’s track record in AI innovation speaks for itself, with previous models like AlphaGo and BERT setting new benchmarks for AI performance. The company’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of AI technology is evident in this latest announcement, and the industry is eagerly awaiting the official release of the new flagship model.

Stay tuned for more updates on Google’s next flagship AI model, as the tech giant continues to lead the way in artificial intelligence innovation.

  • ‘Today’ Host Dylan Dreyer Quietly Lists New York Apartment for $2.5 Million—as She Sparks Debate With Divisive Babysitting Rules

“Today” show anchor and mother of three Dylan Dreyer has quietly listed her New York City apartment for $2.5 million, eight years after she and husband Brian Fichera purchased the elegant abode.

Dreyer, 43, and Fichera, 38, purchased the two-bedroom, two-bathroom condo in June 2016, according to property records, just a few months before they welcomed Calvin, the first of their three sons, in December.

With the addition of sons Oliver, 5, and Rusty, 3, the couple may well be ready for a more spacious dwelling.

Dreyer—who is a co-host on the third hour of “Today,” alongside Al Roker and Sheinelle Jones—and cameraman Fichera first attempted to sell the property in November of last year, according to records.

But just two weeks after the apartment was put on the market for $2,495,000, the listing was taken down, only to be restored days later.

It was most recently relisted a few days into January for the same price.

The condo, which was built in 2008, sprawls across 1,491 square feet and features floor-to-ceiling windows with views of the lush landscaping of Battery Park below.

The expansive living room has elegant oak wood flooring, and the chef’s kitchen offers a chic and minimalist design with gray cabinets, modern appliances, and marble countertops.

The dining room can accommodate 10 people.

The bedrooms are “generously proportioned,” the listing notes. The “oversized” primary suite features a “five-fixture bathroom complete with Crema Luna limestone floors and tops, Waterworks fixtures and teak cabinetry.”

The listing photos reveal the lengths that Dreyer and Fichera went to maximize the space in their second bedroom, which serves as a dedicated space for their kids. The bedroom offers a three-level bunk bed, a colorful rug, and animal-themed storage bins as well as a wall with built-in storage.

Dreyer has previously hinted at plans to move out of her Manhattan condo. In January 2022, she joked that while some might believe the space had become too tight for her family of five, she was determined to make it work for as long as possible.

She captioned the image: “‘You have to move,’ they said. ‘You’ll never fit in your apartment,’ they said. ‘Time for a bigger place,’ they said.

“This is how you do it in NYC. I think they all fit just fine … for now.”

The news of her home hitting the market comes just after the “Today” star sparked fierce debate with her babysitting instructions calendar.

Dreyer offered a glimpse into her chaotic life as an on-air talent and busy mom of three when she posted an image of the very in-depth instructions she leaves her in-laws when they babysit—sparking a furious debate among her social media followers in the process.

“How much fun would it be to have me as your daughter-in-law??” she questioned while sharing a photo of her sons’ weekly schedule, which included instructions for everything from meals to bathtime.

“I think I’m being helpful! Sound off: helpful or impossibly annoying???”

Speaking to Today.com about the calendar system, Dreyer insisted that her mother-in-law, Denise, appreciates the level of detail: “My mother-in-law babysits often. She comes down from Boston to help whenever we ask.

“She’s obsessed with my boys, and if she hasn’t seen them for more than two weeks, she’s itching for the invite! My father-in-law will join her over the weekend to help with the juggle of birthday parties and sports.”

The talk show host revealed that, although her mother-in-law wouldn’t admit if she was annoyed with the schedule, Dreyer believes she appreciates it.

“My mother-in-law wouldn’t tell me if she didn’t like it, but I think she finds it helpful so she doesn’t have to think and can instead just enjoy the boys.

“I just try to keep the weekdays organized, then the weekend is a free-for-all. I like to know they’re filling up on good foods during the week. They can live a little over the weekend!”

Although many fans praised Dreyer for her organization skills and branded her lists “helpful,” a number of her followers urged her to “slow her roll.”

Another user claimed it was “a little too detailed,” while someone else noted that it was “a bit much.”

  • PlayStation 5 free upgrade for PS4 hit game quietly leaks online – Playstation

PlayStation 5 free upgrade for PS4 hit game quietly leaks online

    Our Wild Hearts are delighted

A critically acclaimed PlayStation 4 title looks set to receive a PlayStation 5 port.

Released in 2019, Sayonara Wild Hearts took the gaming community by storm, receiving one positive review after another.

This “dreamy arcade game” is a beautiful, creative experience that everyone should check out, even if rhythm games aren’t for you.

If the lack of a PlayStation 5 port has been holding you back, that issue may soon be one of the past as suggested by an online leak spotted by Push Square.

The outlet revealed that a PS5 trophy list for Sayonara Wild Hearts has appeared on PSNProfiles.

We’ll always be Wild at heart for Sayonara Wild Hearts

At the time of writing this, no announcement from either PlayStation or Annapurna Interactive has said that a native PS5 port is due to be released.

Some believe this theory is further strengthened by the fact that the title was recently added to PlayStation Plus Extra.

Naturally, fans will now be watching this story closely for any further developments.

In the meantime, we can only speculate on whether its PS5 version will be free for those who’ve already purchased the PS4 version.

This is typically what happens; however, it’s uncertain whether those who are playing via PS Plus will be able to enjoy the upgrade for free.

Unless Sony adds it to the PS Plus Extra collection as well, it seems unlikely.

Another PS5 port has seemingly been leaked, only this time the premature “reveal” has come from Sony itself.

A Nintendo RPG is coming to the console, one which originally seemed destined to be a Nintendo exclusive. Oh, how the tables have turned.

Similarly to Sayonara Wild Hearts, we’ll have to wait for official confirmation before we allow ourselves to get too excited.

That said, we’re hopeful given all the evidence that’s been amassed thus far.

  • Federal employees quietly edit job descriptions to protect roles from DOGE scrutiny

    New York
    CNN
     —

As President-elect Donald Trump’s administration prepares to take over Washington, some federal employees are quietly changing the language of job descriptions and performance reviews in an effort to protect roles and critical government functions in the face of the so-called Department of Government Efficiency.

Tech billionaire Elon Musk and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, who Trump tapped to lead the outside initiative, have said they plan to recommend slashing the federal workforce, cutting the government’s annual budget by at least $1 trillion, and curbing regulations.

Ahead of the initiative’s deployment, five sources familiar with the effort, including senior staffers from multiple agencies, told CNN that some workers are removing mentions of “policy” decision-making and terms related to diversity programs from written job descriptions, duties, and performance reviews to protect the roles from possible cuts.

“People are definitely reimagining how to communicate what they’ve done and do to try and escape scrutiny,” one federal employee told CNN.

Even among those who support efforts to streamline the government and make it more efficient, some fear the effort will be ham-handed. One concern among federal workers is that DOGE will suggest cuts using a “hatchet not a scalpel” and utilize artificial intelligence to target buzzwords in job descriptions without carefully studying the roles, some said.

DOGE does not have any direct power to make spending cuts, regulatory changes or other moves —– that authority belongs to Congress — though Musk’s comments have been shown to carry weight with lawmakers. While the DOGE effort exists outside of the government and will likely provide recommendations, Musk is reportedly set to have an office inside the White House.

Representatives for DOGE, Musk and Ramaswamy did not respond to CNN requests for comment.

The employees CNN spoke with said the moves were not part of a larger, coordinated effort across agencies. Instead, managers in some agencies are taking it upon themselves — some under the directive of the agency’s top appointees — to safeguard positions and policies. While some are concerned about losing their jobs and livelihoods, multiple employees told CNN they were also trying to protect roles critical to an agency’s function.

Elon Musk, with his son on his shoulders, and Vivek Ramaswamy walk on Capitol Hill in Washington DC on December 5, 2024.

President-elect Donald Trump, who has derided civil servants as agents of the “deep state,” promised on the campaign trail to reinstate a 2020 executive order known as Schedule F which created a new job category for federal employees in policy-related positions. The order removed much of the federal protections for civil servants, making it easier to fire workers. President Joe Biden has later cancelled the order shortly after taking office.

Ahead of the order’s possible reinstatement, one senior staffer said they were advised by their agency’s “front office” to edit “any job description that mentioned policy.”

“Managers could elect to just quietly tweak a career officials’ job description so that the functionality of the job stayed the same but would say ‘provide guidance’ instead of ‘provide policy guidance’,” the staffer told CNN. “It makes their role seem less policy and political orientated.”

Other federal employees said there was more of a focus on editing out anything related to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion programs (DEI) efforts that have become a right-wing bogeyman Musk has vowed to purge from the government.

Another staffer at a different agency said that since Election Day, more people have stopped the use of DEI terms in performance appraisals and in hiring processes.

One person familiar with the effort said some federal employees fear that could mean roles that have nothing to do with DEI policies will be targeted as well. As one example, the person said employees may edit job descriptions for finance roles that use the words “equity” or “diversification,” even though they have nothing to do with DEI programs. The fear, the person said, is the incoming administration will attempt to cut anything with these buzzwords without looking closely at the context.

Jason Briefel, head of policy and legislative affairs at the Senior Executive Association, which represents thousands of the most senior career members of the federal government, confirmed to CNN some individuals at federal agencies are making edits around issues like DEI policies.

“It’s in line with what lots of organizations and the private sector are doing, changing the words they use,” Briefel said.

In a recent development, Federal employees have been quietly editing job descriptions to protect their roles from scrutiny by the Department of Government Ethics (DOGE). This sneaky tactic has raised concerns about transparency and accountability within government agencies.

By tweaking the language in their job descriptions, employees are able to downplay the importance of their roles and responsibilities, making it more difficult for DOGE to assess the potential conflicts of interest or ethical concerns that may arise.

This practice undermines the integrity of the government and hinders efforts to ensure that public officials are held accountable for their actions. It also raises questions about the level of oversight and regulation within federal agencies.

It is crucial that steps are taken to address this issue and ensure that federal employees are held to the highest ethical standards. Transparency and accountability are essential in maintaining the public’s trust in government institutions, and any attempts to evade scrutiny must be thoroughly investigated and addressed.

  • Lawsuit: Allstate used GasBuddy and other apps to quietly track driving behavior

With that data—plus, in some cases, data from connected vehicles—Allstate could see when, how far, and for how long someone was driving, along with “hard braking events” and “whether a consumer picked up or opened their phone while traveling at certain speeds,” according to the complaint.

Texas’ lawsuit claims that Arity incentivized—through “generous bonus incentives”—apps like GasBuddy, a gas price-tracking app, and Life360, which is intended to keep tabs on family members’ location, to “increas[e] the size of their dataset.” Under their agreements with app makers, Arity had “varying levels of control over the privacy disclosures and consent language” shown to app users, according to the complaint.

Reached for comment by Ars, Allstate Corporation provided a statement: “Arity helps consumers get the most accurate auto insurance price after they consent in a simple and transparent way that fully complies with all laws and regulations.”

    Nine car brands sharing data

The suit also cites Allstate as gathering direct car use data from Toyota, Lexus, Mazda, Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, Jeep, Maserati, and Ram vehicles.

Texas is one of the states that sued General Motors last year for seeking driver data in a less roundabout fashion. GM quietly included “usage-based insurance providers” in its privacy notice for its connected-car service OnStar. A New York Times report revealed that some GM drivers were having car insurance rates adjusted upward or outright denied as a result. GM ultimately stopped sharing driver data with insurers through third-party data brokers, one of which shut down soon after.

This post was updated to include a comment from Allstate.

In a shocking new development, a lawsuit has been filed against Allstate claiming that the insurance company used popular apps like GasBuddy to secretly track customers’ driving behavior. According to the lawsuit, Allstate allegedly collected data on users’ speed, acceleration, and even their location without their knowledge or consent.

The lawsuit, which was filed in a federal court, accuses Allstate of violating privacy laws and engaging in deceptive practices. It claims that the company used this data to adjust customers’ insurance premiums based on their driving habits, without informing them that their behavior was being monitored.

This news has raised concerns about the level of data collection and surveillance that insurance companies are engaging in, and has sparked a debate about the ethics of using this information to determine insurance rates.

Allstate has denied these allegations, stating that they are committed to protecting their customers’ privacy and only use data for legitimate business purposes. However, this lawsuit is sure to bring greater scrutiny to the practices of insurance companies and their use of technology to track and monitor customers.

It remains to be seen how this lawsuit will unfold and what impact it will have on the insurance industry as a whole. In the meantime, customers are advised to be cautious about the information they share with companies and to carefully review their privacy policies before agreeing to any terms and conditions.

While Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 made its debut on Netflix on Monday, the fate of the second chapter of Kevin Costner’s Western saga remains up in the air.

In light of the poor box office performance of Horizon 1 at the box office, Costner’s production company Territory Pictures and distributor New Line Cinema pulled Horizon 2 from its mid-August release date.

“Territory Pictures and New Line Cinema have decided not to release Horizon: Chapter 2 on August 16 to give audiences a greater opportunity to discover the first installment of Horizon over the coming weeks, including on PVOD and Max,” a New Line spokesperson said (via The Hollywood Reporter,). “We thank our exhibition partners for their continued support as moviegoers across the U.S. discover the film in its theatrical run.”

Even though its release date was in limbo, a world premiere for Horizon 2 was held at the Venice International Film Festival on Sept. 7. Much like the reviews for Horizon 1, though, reviews out of Venice were poor for Horizon 2.

Kevin Costner’s Horizon 1, which also stars Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Michael Rooker and Danny Huston, is streaming on Netflix.

Kevin Costner may be known for his iconic roles in hit films like “Dances with Wolves” and “The Bodyguard,” but his latest project, “Horizon,” is not quite living up to his past successes.

The film, which was released in theaters earlier this year to lackluster reviews and disappointing box office numbers, has quietly made its debut on Netflix. Despite a star-studded cast and a high production budget, “Horizon” failed to make a significant impact with audiences.

Critics have panned the film for its lackluster plot, one-dimensional characters, and uninspired action sequences. Many have pointed to the film’s poor reception as a sign that Costner’s star power may be fading.

While “Horizon” may not be the comeback vehicle that Costner was hoping for, fans of the actor can still enjoy his other work on Netflix, including classics like “Field of Dreams” and “The Untouchables.”

Only time will tell if “Horizon” will find a second life on streaming or if it will be quickly forgotten as one of Costner’s box office duds.

Bluetooth technology has become an integral part of our daily lives, allowing us to connect and communicate wirelessly with a variety of devices. But have you ever stopped to think about how this seemingly magical technology actually works? In this post, we will take a deep dive into the science behind Bluetooth technology and explore the invisible forces that power our wireless devices.

At its core, Bluetooth technology is based on a radio communication system that operates in the 2.4 GHz frequency range. This frequency was chosen for its ability to penetrate obstacles and provide reliable communication over short distances. When you connect your smartphone to a Bluetooth speaker or your laptop to a wireless mouse, you are essentially establishing a radio link between the two devices.

But how does this radio link actually work? Bluetooth devices use a technique called frequency hopping spread spectrum (FHSS) to transmit data. This means that the devices constantly change the frequency at which they transmit data, hopping between different channels within the 2.4 GHz frequency range. This helps to reduce interference from other devices operating in the same frequency band and ensures a more stable connection.

In addition to FHSS, Bluetooth technology also employs a technique called adaptive frequency hopping (AFH). This allows Bluetooth devices to dynamically select the best channels to use based on the level of interference present in the environment. By constantly monitoring the radio spectrum and adjusting their transmission frequencies, Bluetooth devices are able to maintain a strong and reliable connection.

But the magic of Bluetooth technology doesn’t stop there. In order to establish a connection between two devices, they must first go through a process called pairing. During pairing, the devices exchange a unique identifier called a link key, which is used to encrypt the data being transmitted. This helps to ensure the security and privacy of the communication between the devices.

So the next time you connect your wireless headphones to your smartphone or transfer files between your laptop and tablet using Bluetooth, remember the invisible forces at work behind the scenes. From radio communication and frequency hopping to adaptive frequency selection and encryption, Bluetooth technology is a marvel of modern science, engineering, and technology. And it’s all happening quietly and seamlessly, making our lives more connected and convenient than ever before.
