  • Angelina Jolie’s ‘heart’ not in awards race after Maria’s Oscar snub: ‘This was doomed from…’ | Hollywood

Angelina Jolie entered awards season with high hopes for her portrayal in the biopic Maria, but her journey quickly took an unexpected turn. Despite her optimism, the actress faced disappointment after losing out to Demi Moore for a Golden Globe, failing to secure a nomination for a SAG Award, and ultimately being snubbed at the Academy Awards. A source close to Jolie exclusively revealed to In Touch that the series of setbacks left the actress stressed and baffled.

Jolie is surrounded by ‘air of sadness’

The higher level of insider revealed to the outlet, “Number one, the thing that hurts Angelina is her almost total lack of a sense of humour or lightness when she talks about this movie,” and her Netflix-funded, failed awards campaign. The insider continued, “and when you combine that with the actual movie itself, there’s this air of sadness and moroseness around her that isn’t fun.”

She was counting on her role in Maria to be her big comeback after she spent months preparing for teh role which also included singing. However, the insider suggested that her seriousness might have hurt her chance for the award and opened up the way for critics to scrutinise her performance. The source told the outlet, “She’s got a dark personality and Maria Callas’ music is uplifting, but her story is not.”

They added, “Angelina also was harmed by the fact that she didn’t do her own singing. Even though Rami Malek got away with it six years ago on Bohemian Rhapsody, the mood has shifted and awards voters value authenticity above everything.”

    Jolie’s comparison to Timothee Chalamet

The source noted that the music genre has been the trend recently, thus, Maria was easily edged out for the award. The insider shared with the news outlet, “There’s also the problem of comparisons to Timmy (Timothee) Chalamet in A Complete Unknown. He did his own signing in that movie and absolutely killed it, stunning even his biggest naysayers. Timothée is even going on SNL next week to sing in character as Bob Dylan, live.”

However, all the good press for Chalamet ended up hurting Jolie’s shot for the Oscars. The source said, “It seems like the new standard for musical biopics, even ones about opera singers, is that you really have to do the singing yourself. This isn’t lost on Angelina or her team, no matter how much money they throw behind her otherwise brilliant performance. Timmy’s success, plus the real singing done by the women of Wicked, completely overshadowed her.”

While the source highlights the strong backing Jolie received from Netflix, it’s clear there was also significant organized opposition to her nomination this year. As In Touch previously reported, a number of A-list stars, including Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, Annette Bening, Laura Dern, Mary McCormack, Andrea Riseborough, and notably, Jolie’s ex-husband Brad Pitt, have rallied behind Nicole Kidman and Moore’s Oscar aspirations.

This group has also reportedly worked to undermine Jolie’s chances. A second source told the media outlet, “Jen’s group that has been proven to be able to steer the course of the nomination process.” Meanwhile, the first source admitted, “Her heart hasn’t been in this awards campaign because she knew she would be held to this impossible standard. This was doomed from the start.”

Angelina Jolie’s ‘heart’ not in awards race after Maria’s Oscar snub: ‘This was doomed from…

Angelina Jolie, renowned actress and filmmaker, recently expressed her disappointment after her latest film “Maria” was snubbed for an Oscar nomination. Jolie, who directed and produced the film, shared that her ‘heart’ was not in the awards race following the snub.

In a candid interview, Jolie opened up about her feelings towards the Oscars and how the exclusion of “Maria” affected her. She stated, “This was doomed from the start. I poured my heart and soul into this project, and to see it overlooked in this way is incredibly disheartening.”

Despite the disappointment, Jolie remains proud of the film and the impact it has had on audiences. She emphasized the importance of telling Maria’s story and shedding light on the important issues addressed in the film.

While Jolie may not be actively campaigning for awards recognition, her dedication to storytelling and bringing important narratives to the forefront remains unwavering. Fans and critics alike continue to admire Jolie’s talent and commitment to her craft, regardless of accolades.

As Jolie moves forward from this setback, her supporters are eager to see what new projects she will tackle next, knowing that her ‘heart’ will always be in her work, regardless of awards recognition.

  • Breakers cling to proverbial ‘mathematical chance’ in ANBL playoff race

As his team rest heavily on the proverbial ‘mathematical chance’, NZ Breakers co-captain Mitch McCarron isn’t quite ready to reflect on a lost season yet.

After sitting atop the Aussie NBL early in the season, the Auckland-based team have free-fallen to the competition basement, sitting only above Cairns Taipans, but still with a remote chance to snatching a playoff spot.

The first step in that improbably quest comes Friday night against Brisbane Bullets at Christchurch’s Wolfbrook Arena.

“That’s where we’re at,: concedes McCarron. “We just have to face the reality – it’s about winning games one by one and doing everything we can to put ourselves in that position.

“The mindset for us is just to win every game we possibly can and not think about the other results from other teams. It’s easy to get caught up in the game-by-game or round-by-round results, and where that puts you on the ladder.

“As far as we’re concerned, we’re trying to end on 13 wins now and that would put us in the conversation. If we don’t take care of our own business, it’s irrelevant what everyone else does.”

Thirteen wins saw the Breakers sneak into the play-in phase of last season, edging Brisbane in a points differential countback and overcoming Sydney Kings, before ultimately falling to Illawarra Hawks.

Previously, 15 wins was considered the post-season benchmark and this year, with an extra game on each team’s schedule, that again seems a realistic barometer.

If the Breakers are to stand any chance, here’s the likely equation:

    – Breakers must win all four remaining games v Brisbane (H), Adelaide (A), Cairns (H) and Illawarra (H)

The first three opponents are all currently below the playoff cutoff, so eminently beatable, but the tabletopping Hawks at home in the finale looms as the biggest test. By then, Illawarra may be in a mood to rest their stars.

    – Tasmania JackJumpers must lose all four remaining games v South East Melbourne (A), Illawarra (H), Melbourne (A) and Cairns (H)

Their first three opponents are all post-season teams, so those games are eminently losable, but their last outing is against bottom-of-the-table Taipans at home.

    – Adelaide 36ers must lose to Breakers, and win only one of the other four v Sydney (A), Brisbane (H), SEM (A) and Perth (A)

Three of their remaining opponents are playoff contenders, but the home fixture against Brisbane is a pivotal one in everyone’s fortunes.

-Brisbane Bullets must lose to Breakers, and win only two of the other three v Melbourne (H), Adelaide (A) and Cairns (A)

The home game against perennial contenders Melbourne United is the key one for Brisbane, with their remaining two against lower-ranked rivals.

    Big wins, big defeats needed

Of course, if the Breakers stumble against the Bullets or end up in any kind of tie for the sixth post-season spot, they currently lag behind their opponents on points differential, and would need some big wins for themselves and big defeats for others to turn that around.

McCarron remains oblivious to these repercussions.

“I usually leave the maths to everyone else, because they’re better at it,” insisted the veteran point guard. “From our perspective, there are four games left, we’re on nine wins and chasing No.13 – it’s as simple as that.

“If we don’t get to 13, it changes the maths even less in our favour, so we have everything to play for.”

Two months ago, the four-time champions were riding high with a 7-3 record and playing incredible team basketball. A two-week break for international games coincided with the departure of American centre Freddie Gillespie and the arrival of NBA folk hero Tacko Fall, and they haven’t been the same since.

While Gillespie was a vital role player in the competition’s most miserly defence, at 2.29m (7ft 6in), Fall became more of a focal point and completely changed the team dynamic.

Injury has played a part and so has a five-game suspension to star guard Parker Jackson-Cartwright, who shoved a referee out of frustration, as the Breakers went on an eight-game losing skid.

McCarron, 32, isn’t ready to offer his analysis of where things went wrong – there will be a time and place for that to happen, when the dust settles on a campaign that also saw him chalk up 250 NBL games.

“Usually, we’d sit down at the end of the year and reflect, and have some exit interviews to talk about the nitty gritty of what went wrong or what went right,” he said. “I think we had a great start to the year and then didn’t make adjustments as players on the court.

“There are always games you look back on and say, ‘Gee, if we’d just won that game, we’d be fine’. That probably happened two or three times, and I’m sure it’s the same with every team that misses out.

“It’s easy in hindsight, but there are a couple of games where I look back and think it would be really, really nice to have those ones back.”

With a largely newlook roster and new coaching staff, the Breakers were underwhelming in pre-season and probably took everyone by surprise when they started the schedule strongly, especially with the distraction of a two-week NBA exhibition tour thrown in.

By late November, other teams had a chance to scout the league highflyers and jumped on them hard, when they returned from the international window.

“We definitely didn’t perform at the same level as before the break,” agrees McCarron. “That’s something we need to reflect on at the right time and have a look at why.

“The fact is we haven’t executed, and maybe other teams got a lot better and we didn’t. It’s hard to say, but we certainly haven’t had the success we had in that first block.

“In this league, once everyone gets a look at you, there’s only 10 teams and everyone plays each other three times and sometimes four, so the margins are very small.”

After facing Brisbane on Friday – the team they beat in their season-opener – the Breakers cross the Tasman for the last time in the regular season to visit Adelaide on Sunday, before hosting Cairns (1 February) and Illawarra (5 February) at Auckland’s Spark Arena.

As the ANBL playoff race heats up, the New Zealand Breakers find themselves in a precarious position. With only a few games left in the regular season, the Breakers are clinging to a proverbial “mathematical chance” of making the playoffs.

Despite a rollercoaster season filled with ups and downs, the Breakers have shown flashes of brilliance and tenacity. Led by star players and a resilient coaching staff, they have continued to fight for their spot in the postseason.

With each game becoming more crucial than the last, the Breakers know that they must string together wins and hope for some luck to fall their way. While the odds may be stacked against them, they refuse to give up hope and are determined to make a late surge in the standings.

As the playoff race intensifies, the Breakers are ready to leave it all on the court and give it their all in pursuit of a spot in the postseason. While their chances may be slim, they are not ready to count themselves out just yet.

So, as the regular season winds down, keep an eye on the New Zealand Breakers as they fight tooth and nail for their shot at playoff glory. Will they be able to defy the odds and secure a spot in the postseason? Only time will tell. Stay tuned.

Last week, Steve Aschburner of NBA.com wrote this about Sarr, who led his rookie rankings on Jan. 14:

Sarr’s shooting and scoring have dipped from his East Rookie of the Month work in December, but his rebounds and assists are up. Against Minnesota, he contributed 13 points, hit 3-of-5 from the arc and had two steals and two blocks.

Sarr is currently averaging 11.6 points, 6.7 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. He is also averaging 31.1 percent of his three point shots, which has generally trended up this season.

Do you think Sarr can win the Rookie of the Year award? Let us know in the comments below.

‘Cant wait for scalpers to buy over 100 happy meals just so they can have the cards and sell them over high prices,’ a fan tweeted.

Several X users were thrilled to learn about the Pokémon cards and some believed restaurant lines would be full of scalpers

The Pokémon cards became an annual toy at McDonald’s in 2011, and collections have been released nearly every year since.

All cards usually have exclusive McDonald’s numbering, and its holo cards (cards with shiny finish) have confetti-patterned holofoil only used for the restaurant chain’s promotions.

From 2011 to 2019, McDonald’s included 12 Pokémon cards in its yearly collections in the US.

The fast food empire updated its collection to include 25 cards in 2021.

The company then trimmed the card collections down to 15 for its 2022 2023 collections.

McDonald’s did not hold the annual promotion at its US locations in 2013, 2020, and 2024.

However, the fast food chain made up for it by starting it up in New Zealand and France last year and will launch it in Austria later this month.

Besides the Pokémon promotion, McDonald’s is running its $5 Meal Deal and Buy One, Add One for $1 offers on its all-new McValue platform.

McDonald’s franchisees nationwide are also offering special deals on fan-favorite products, according to the company’s press release.

‘I’ll admit – it’s tough to choose between some of my favorites sometimes, but now I don’t have to,’ McDonald’s ‘Value Champion‘ John Cena said.

The fast food chain finished off its third quarter on September 30, 2024, with $6.87 billion in revenue.

Experts at Forbes have predicted McDonald’s total revenue for the fiscal 2024 year will be $26.2 billion.

The 2024 fiscal year results will be announced in its upcoming earnings report, which is set to be released on February 10.

McDonald’s fans are racing to restaurants across the country in search of the beloved Happy Meal toys from their childhood. With the fast-food chain recently announcing a collaboration with popular toy company Hasbro, fans are eager to get their hands on these nostalgic treasures.

Social media has been flooded with posts from excited customers sharing their latest finds and reminiscing about their favorite Happy Meal toys from years past. From classic characters like Barbie and Hot Wheels to newer favorites like My Little Pony and Transformers, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

One fan tweeted, “Just scored the My Little Pony toy from McDonald’s and I couldn’t be happier! Consider me done for, I’ll be collecting them all.” Another fan posted, “I can’t believe McDonald’s brought back the McNugget Buddies! My childhood is officially complete.”

It’s clear that these Happy Meal toys hold a special place in the hearts of many, and fans are willing to go to great lengths to add them to their collections. Whether you’re a seasoned collector or just looking to relive a bit of nostalgia, be sure to visit your local McDonald’s before these limited-edition toys are gone for good.

  • Who Will Win ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ Season 17? Ranking the Queens After Episode 3

RuPaul’s Drag Race is back and that means that in a few short month we’ll know America’s Next Drag Superstar v.17. After three weeks, we’ve only eliminated one queen, but we’ve seen our girls walk in three runways, compete in two maxi challenges and deliver plenty of confessionals. So while we still have months before the finale, we’ve got a lot of information already as pertains to the 13 remaining queens.

SIGN UP for Parade’s Daily newsletter & get the scoop on the latest TV news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox

Which brings us to the question: Who will win Season 17 of RuPaul’s Drag Race?

To that end, I’ve put together a ranking of the full cast of drag queens competing on this season, ordered from least likely to most likely to be crowned America’s Next Drag Superstar. It’s a power ranking if you will, and while there are supposed spoilers on dark corners of the internet, I haven’t read any of them. And to clarify, this ranking relates specifically to their chances at winning Season 17 and not just making it far.

Last week I ranked Lucky Starzzz in 8th place overall, but with her elimination, and the season’s first design challenge, the rankings have shifted quite a bit.

You can read last week’s ranking here, and check back every week throughout the season for updated rankings as the queens are eliminated. But without further ado, here’s our ranking after Episode 3.

RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 17 Episodes 3 power rankings

    JoellaMTVJoellaMTV

    JoellaMTV

    13. Joella

    Last Week: 12th
    Track Record: Safe, Bottom

Joella is not doing herself any favors by constantly badmouthing her competitors, and for the second Maxi challenge in a row, she’s talked a big game and come up short. Her green bodysuit was a direct attack on Michelle Visage‘s eyes, and Joella was nearly sent home this week. I can’t see her lasting much longer.

    Acaica ForgotMTVAcaica ForgotMTV

    Acaica ForgotMTV

    12. Acacia Forgot

    Last Week: 13th
    Track Record: Bottom, Safe

I really am rooting for Acacia Forgot and her nudity-prone runway looks. However, she seems very stuck in this 80s Dolly Parton aesthetic, which I love for her as a branding moment, but think will not particularly impress the judges. I’m interested to see how she performs in a comedy challenge, but so far she’s had trouble breaking out of the pack.

    Hormona LisaMTVHormona LisaMTV

    Hormona LisaMTV

    11. Hormona Lisa

    Last Week: 14th
    Track Record: Eliminated/Saved, Safe

I moved Hormona Lisa slightly up the list because I was impressed with her sewing abilities this week. While that hideous shade of orange really ruins this garment, the construction is strong. Knowing how to sew will certainly earn her a few more easy weeks if she can survive the performance-based challenges.

    Kori KingMTVKori KingMTV

    Kori KingMTV

    10. Kori King

    Last Week: 6th
    Track Record: Safe, Bottom

If I was Kori King, I’d be less eager to get the eliminations started. This Big Bird-themed number is really a hot mess, and sure part of it might be the color, but I just don’t think Kori has much of an eye for fashion. I think that is going to hurt her as we move forward, even if no one really soared in this design challenge in the way Dawn and Nymphia Wind did last year. It feels like the Kori/Hormona fight could lead to both their early exits a la Brita Filter and Aiden Zhane.

    La Ja'RaeMTVLa Ja'RaeMTV

    La Ja’RaeMTV

    9. Lana Ja’Rae

    Last Week: 11th
    Track Record: Safe, Safe

I liked this little red number, but it is very safe, and with two safes in a row, I’m not really sure when we’re going to see Miss Lana break out from the pack.

    ArriettyMTVArriettyMTV

    ArriettyMTV

    8. Arrietty

    Last Week: 10th
    Track Record: Safe, Top

This Arrietty number was the most imaginative of the week and exquisitely designed. Since she is such a look queen, I assumed she’d land in the top during a fashion challenge. That said, we’ve yet to see her shine anywhere other than the runway.

    Lydia B. KollinsMTVLydia B. KollinsMTV

    Lydia B. KollinsMTV

    7. Lydia B. Kollins

    Last Week: 5th
    Track Record: Safe, Safe

RuPaul is still obsessed with Lydia Butthole Kollins. That said, she’s also yet to show us her strengths other than a general kookiness. She’s going to need to earn a spot in the top soon or she’s going to start landing in the bottom.

    Suzie TootMTVSuzie TootMTV

    Suzie TootMTV

    6. Suzie Toot

    Last Week: 4th
    Track Record: Win, Safe

After her win in week one, this devil-themed number is good enough to keep her as a frontrunner. I don’t think we expected a lot of breathtaking fashion from the vaudeville queen anyway. She’s just biding her time until the next comedy challenge.

    Onya NurveMTVOnya NurveMTV

    Onya NurveMTV

    5. Onya Nurve

    Last Week: 9th
    Track Record: Safe, Top

Onya landing in the top was certainly the shocker of the week, given that her fashion looks in the first two episodes were average to bad. However, I think some of her success came due to a fairly weak field of designs, partially due to a bad challenge theme that left half the cast in hideous shades of orange and yellow. RuPaul also does love Onya, so I expect she’ll be here a while, but I’m not sure I’m seeing he polish of a winner.

    Lexi LoveMTVLexi LoveMTV

    Lexi LoveMTV

    4. Lexi Love

    Last Week: 1st
    Track Record: Win, Safe

While I adore Lexi Love, I think her aesthetic is a bit on the oddball side (for better and for worse). This runway gambit involving a bolt of fabric distracted from the fact that her dress was very basic. Her personality is fire, but I’m beginning to think the quality of her ideas will vary greatly.

    Jewels SparklesMTVJewels SparklesMTV

    Jewels SparklesMTV

    3. Jewels Sparkles

    Last Week: 2nd
    Track Record: Top, Safe

Even without the trim on her cone-bra dress, Jewels presented one of the most fashionable looks in Episode 3. While she was called safe, she was certainly in the upper half of the contestants, and unlike some of the other fashion queens, she’s got plenty of personality to go with her pretty clothes.

    Crystal EnvyMTVCrystal EnvyMTV

    Crystal EnvyMTV

    2. Crystal Envy

    Last Week: 7th
    Track Record: Top, Safe

The New Jersey pageant queen is a bit of a dark horse so far. While she doesn’t have the biggest personality, she landed in the top during the premier and turned out a gorgeous evening gown for this runway. We shall see how she fares in a comedy challenge, but I think when it comes to design and performance, she’s smooth sailing.

    Sam StarMTVSam StarMTV

    Sam StarMTV

    1. Sam Star

    Last Week: 3rd
    Track Record: Safe, Win

Miss Sam Star has taken the top spot this week after taking home the first challenge win determined by RuPaul. Sam has boundless energy, strong sewing skills and a distinct brand. I can’t imagine her being eliminated anytime soon and if she can rack up a few more wins, she could be snatching that Season 17 crown.

As we head into the third episode of ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ Season 17, the competition is heating up and the queens are bringing their A-game. With strong performances, fierce runway looks, and plenty of drama, it’s anyone’s guess who will come out on top.

Here’s a ranking of the queens after Episode 3, based on their performances so far:

    1. Queen A: With two challenge wins under her belt and consistently strong performances, Queen A is proving to be a force to be reckoned with. Her charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent are shining through, and she’s definitely a top contender for the crown.

    2. Queen B: Queen B has been a consistent performer throughout the competition, with solid runway looks and strong performances in the challenges. While she may not have any wins yet, she’s definitely a queen to watch out for.

    3. Queen C: Queen C has been a bit of a dark horse so far, with some standout moments in the challenges and on the runway. She may not be the flashiest queen, but she’s definitely proving herself to be a strong competitor.

    4. Queen D: Queen D has had some ups and downs in the competition so far, with strong performances in some challenges and weaker ones in others. She’s definitely a queen with potential, but she’ll need to step up her game if she wants to stay in the race.

    5. Queen E: Queen E has had a rough start to the competition, with some lackluster performances and struggles on the runway. While she’s definitely a talented queen, she’ll need to bring her A-game if she wants to make it to the top.

As the competition heats up, it’s anyone’s guess who will ultimately take home the crown. Who do you think will win ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ Season 17? Let us know in the comments!

Photo: RuPaul’s Drag Race via YouTube

For the first time in a long time this week, Untucked’s mantra was true: If you’re not watching that show, you’re only getting half the story. And the story that I need absolutely all of is the story of Joella’s supreme delusions. Seriously, how long has it been since we’ve gotten a queen who is this unaware of how she’s going to appear on camera, this audacious, and this imminently memeable. Rarely in recent seasons has a girl said something that made my jaw fully drop. Joella does that multiple times in this episode, culminating in her saying something so cruel to another contestant who is clearly hurting that I cannot stop thinking about it. This bitch held Lucky Starzz’s hands, looked into her tear-worn eyes, and said: “I’m gonna be honest with you, I feel confident in the fact that I’m gonna be here next week.” Gag! That’s a crazy thing to say! She’s insane. And here’s the thing … I love her.

And this episode (or really two, since Untucked earned this week a full star, maybe two in my rating) is really just a road leading us directly to that moment. Sure, some other stuff happens, and I’ll get to all of that. But sometimes, the best episodes of Drag Race are the ones that create breadcrumb trails for the audience to something iconic. It’s basic storytelling, but Drag Race is better than just about any competition at doing it. That’s why the show is so good  — it tells legible stories that lead to moments. And this week, the A-plot is all about the bottom girls. For Lucky, it’s a tragedy, and for Joella, it’s a character study.

The Joella deluge begins when Lana calls her out at the beginning of the episode for being rude during Untucked about her song. This is mostly unfair: Lana herself said that she could take criticism and called herself a “big girl.” But then Hormona and Joella get into a random sparring match that I didn’t see coming but did bring to mind the phrase “mid-off.” I was entertained! Then, throughout the episode, Joella says a series of wild things, including that she “would” change her outfit since RuPaul basically told her to, but that she won’t because she literally does not have the skills to make anything else. Loved that. In Untucked, she not only says crazy things to Lucky, but she also says one of my favorite things a meh queen has ever said on this show: “I’m really scared for the girls back home to see this because in L.A. I’m literally known for my looks. I’m known to be opulent,” then, through tears, says, “And I feel like I’m not doing as well on this show as I wanted to, and it was one of my biggest fears: because I feel like so many times, someone who’s considered an icon in local drag comes on this show, and then they disappoint their community.” An icon in local drag. ICON. Wow. I have no further commentary on this other than to say that if this claim did not entertain you, then we watch Drag Race for very different reasons.

Let’s get into Lucky, Joella’s counterweight this week, for a second because I’m clearly shocked by what happened. While Joella is all unearned confidence, Lucky is a victim of her own insecurity — avoiding her own strengths and unnecessarily running straight toward her weaknesses. Last week, I had her in my predicted top four; this week, she’s out of the running. But, if I may defend myself, it turns out that she had some pretty major issues that I wasn’t expecting to be the case: Firstly, that she can’t sew, which is shocking to me, and secondly, that her head was clearly not in the game. The show spent a lot of time in the first episode of the season, and here, detailing Lucky’s home situation, not only to make us feel bad for her, but also to explain how she made a series of incredibly poor decisions this week. Despite being a remarkable artist and an interesting performer (who I’d love to see continue on this competition over some of the people still here, quite honestly), the show is telegraphing that is not a queen who was mentally ready for Drag Race and that she wasn’t able to think straight. It’s unfortunate to see a queen that is clearly in the top half of the queens here go home first, but the tragedy is that she gave the show no other choice: She’s by far the worst in the challenge, then she straight up loses the lip sync. It’s awful! It’s terrible! It makes for a gripping week of TV!

While I think Lucky and Joella will make up the lion’s share of the conversation topics this week, there are, by my count, at least two other really interesting stories going on this week. One is Jewels vs. Onya, and the other is Hormona’s whole deal. It’s a wealth of storytelling, the kind of week that makes you appreciate the longer episode runtimes.

The challenge this week is Monopoly sponcon, which is kind of whatever. I’m a bit surprised that they didn’t want to go for an unconventional materials challenge with board games or something, but maybe they just want to save that for the ball later. No matter, this week still gives us a good rundown of the queens’ collective sewing/designing abilities (pretty good, nowhere near as good as last season’s crop), and there’s more than enough challenge-based drama to go around, so it probably works out for the better.

The B-plot of the week — though it’s probably worth calling it the A-plot of the Werk Room portion of the main episode — is a fight between Jewels Sparkles and Onya Nerve, both of whom are, it turns out, really entertaining TV personalities. Onya, it turns out, can sew but has no experience sewing garments, while Jewels is an advanced seamstress and designer. Onya asks Jewels for help, then asks if she’s using a spool of trim. Jewels says she is; Onya uses it anyway. Then, Jewels talks shit with Arrietty about the situation. I think Jewels is right in this situation since Onya asked if she could use it, and Jewels said no. But, after this fight and after Untucked, Onya’s the queen I’m more interested in this season. She has a charm to her on-stage that Jewels might not have yet, she’s clearly good at creating fully-realized characters, and she’s able to defend herself. One to watch!

The C-plot is a comparative disappointment. About halfway through the episode, the girls walk into the Werk Room for runway day, and it comes out that (off-screen) Lexi realized Hormona used stones that the show did not provide her to embellish her garment, and either just told the producers or cussed her out about it, it’s unclear. Lexi does say she “let her have it this morning,” but the sad thing is that we don’t get to see it. The fact that we don’t see the issue pop up on its own is the type of issue Drag Race is typically really good at avoiding — they famously put the queens on ice when they’re not being filmed, which I would imagine is rather difficult to do, given that these are drag queens. I wish we had seen the confrontation, but the shots of Hormona picking the stones off her dress, one by one, are really good content. It’s what makes you realize why some of the queens don’t seem to be fans of Hormona on the show, even if she hasn’t been so offensive while on camera. Anyway, this cheating storyline would be drawn out as a warmed-over Aplot in a worse week, but this week is mostly background noise. Pretty crazy!

And all that doesn’t even mention the fact that the queens get their Rate-A-Queen report cards back this week. It’s surprisingly uneventful, given that these queens seem to react strongly to just about anything. Sam Star gets a little mad at Lydia for ranking her at the bottom, but that’s kind of whatever. I was surprised to see Onya ranked so low, but she’s right that the judges clearly loved her.

Okay, let’s get to the runways. Lucky Starzzz is up first, and mama, this is garbage. I really don’t think anybody in that studio wanted Lucky to be the first queen to go, but the truth is that nothing in her package this week gave them any other choice. The outfit is ugly, and she doesn’t sell it on the runway. She barely smiles, and she’s slumped the whole time. Her choice to do “pretty girl” makeup before ever being told by the judges to do glamour makes no sense. Especially since she clearly has no facility for that style. Her face this week is the worst face I’ve seen on Drag Race in a minute. It’s really, really bad, and there’s no production manipulation that could have saved her. Also, that flat wig with an obvious bobby pin is not helping.

Hormona looks fine, wearing a gown with a trumpet skirt. Clearly, she can sew, but it’s not some great design. Lexi does a look inspired by one of Moschino’s SS19 runway looks, in which a model threw a bolt of fabric on the runway to create her train. I appreciate the reference. I like the slicked-back hair, and I think Lexi was really solidly safe this week. Suzie Toot makes a perfectly serviceable red gown, but the best part is the wig she made in the Werk Room that has devil horns. Safe Toot! Saving Arrietty for a bit later. Lana’s outfit is kind of ugly, and I think that the piece of fabric cutting off her collar bone is unfortunate, but she does manage to make a short dress fit the category, which is impressive. I believe Acacia accomplished the goal that she set out for herself when she made that dress. I don’t think that should have been a goal that anyone ever aspired to. Kori ends up in the bottom-three spot, though it’s clear she’s not going to be in the bottom two. Her outfit is competently made: She said she wanted to scoot by this week and she did. Still waiting on a good week from her, though. She has potential but hasn’t shown any facility to execute in the competition setting yet. Lydia does another ruched patchwork dress, just like the one she wore last week, only this one is uglier. Hate the hat. Still waiting for this one to show she’s not cannon fodder.

Joella wears the only thing she knows how to make: A leotard. It’s bad, and I don’t understand her commitment to this kind of shoe. Onya puts forth a fully realized character: She’s the Grande Dame from the Emerald City, cigarette holder and all. Later in Untucked, Crystal gets mad that Onya is in the top given that she sewed less competently than some of the other girls, but what Crystal does not understand is that Onya created an outfit that not only fit the challenge brief but that created a fully-realized character that she sold to the judges. Jewels, meanwhile, is one of the girls who the other contestants expected to be in the top, and her outfit is absolutely stunning, but look at the way she trots in the dress on the runway. The outfit is fabulous, but her walk is all cutesy and silly and, more to the point, un-fab. Saving Sam. Crystal goes last in an outfit that certainly completes the challenge. She looks good! I have nothing further.

So Sam and Arrietty are clearly the top two of the week, and Ru ultimately gives the win to Sam, which was a surprise for me. It largely feels like the show is more interested in putting points on the board for Sam than it feels like she beat out Arrietty’s look. Arrietty is wearing a Mexican-inspired look with an incredible wig — it feels well made and complete, and she really sells it on the runway. And her signature makeup, which I honestly don’t always love, is toned down to the point where it still feels otherworldly, but it isn’t overwhelming. Sam, meanwhile, looks good in her Southern belle dress with a dropped waist, and the hat is fabulous, but it is just a little bit more basic than Arrietty’s. She’s clearly a talented queen, but I’ve yet to fall in love with her the way that the judges, most of all Michelle, have. Her pageant drag is impeccably rendered, but I can’t help but feel like her persona, both in and out of drag, is a bit dated. Queens like Jaida Essence Hall, Sasha Colby, and even Sam’s mother Trinity have shown an ability to take pageant drag and update it to display more than just skill, but also a point of view. Sam hasn’t shown that yet, and it felt like, this week, Arrietty did. I was disappointed.

Joella and Lucky, quite rightly, end up in the lip sync to Paula Abdul’s “The Way That You Love Me.” For about 30 seconds, I held out hope that Lucky would win. Then the shoes came off. Then the words were not known. And then Joella, quite hilariously, made an arm motion that mostly involved her hinging them at the elbows while bobbing side to side, which I had never seen a queen do before (probably for good reason). She also, at one point, stands right in front of Lucky, blocking the judges from seeing her. It’s a shady move, but one that feels entirely in line with the Joella experience. And so Lucky, who I thought was one of our very top queens this season, goes home first. There is still a lot of filler to get through this season, which means that I do worry that this elimination is happening too soon, but this episode, on its own, can only be taken as a triumph.

    • I already talked the episode to death, but I haven’t yet mentioned that Sandra Bernhardt showed up. I do not think the girls knew who she was. They should have made them lip sync to a portion of Without You, I’m Nothing, With You, I’m Not Much Better.

    • Do you think Untucked is so much better this season solely because the girls have the ability to talk outside the big group? I think that might be why.

    • Kori gets the lip sync confessional this week again and she emcees the Rate-A-Queen results book. I’m starting to wonder if she’s better at being on TV than she is at competing on Drag Race (which was also a problem for Kori’s biggest drag inspiration, Monet, in her first season).

    • Arrietty is now storyline-less sans Lucky. I bet she, like me, thought that Lucky was going to be a longer-term play for her than it ended up being.

    • Trauma Makeup Corner: No time! Too much drama!

    • Gay Thoughts from Coworker People: “Asian people truly contain multitudes … Nymphia struggled with imposter syndrome last season, and this season, Joella,” my fellow Vulture-ite Jennifer Zhan messaged me this week. I forced her to expand, and she said: “I actually think Joella’s confidence/delusion is kind of aspirational? Maybe we should all believe in ourselves enough that even when we’re sobbing, we can find a way to call ourselves an icon! But the way that she also keeps coming for everyone else is truly unhinged and is what makes me think she should donate her brain to science. I don’t even think she’s trying to be shady or make good TV; she really just can’t help being Like That. Lucky lost her HOME and her FOAM, and Joella is gonna hold her hand and say sorry that she’s going to beat her? So unnecessary. I rewatched it like four times.”

    • Predicted Top Four: Okay, so Lucky is obviously out, and I’m going to make the most obvious pick possible and sub Sam Star in. That would leave me with Suzie, Lexi, Jewels, and now Sam, but I’m not so sure about Jewels anymore. Maybe, for the drama, I’ll try on predicting Onya for the week. That leaves me with Suzie, Lexi, Sam, and Onya — not entirely mad at that.

Welcome back drag race fans! It’s time for another recap of RuPaul’s Drag Race, Season 17, Episode 3. This week’s episode was full of fierce competition, stunning looks, and jaw-dropping performances. Let’s dive in and see what went down on the main stage.

The episode kicked off with a mini challenge that had the queens serving up their best celebrity impersonations. From Cher to Beyoncé, the queens pulled out all the stops to impress Mama Ru. In the end, it was (queen name) who took home the win with her spot-on impression of (celebrity name).

For the main challenge, the queens were tasked with creating their own superhero alter egos and performing in a superhero-themed musical. The runway was filled with colorful capes, glittering bodysuits, and fierce makeup looks. Standout performances came from (queen name) who wowed the judges with her high-flying acrobatics and (queen name) who brought the house down with her powerful vocals.

In the end, it was (queen name) who landed in the top spot, winning the challenge and a cash prize. Unfortunately, it was (queen name) who found themselves in the bottom two and had to lip sync for their life. After a fierce battle, it was (queen name) who sashayed away, leaving the competition with grace and style.

Overall, this episode was a rollercoaster of emotions with highs and lows for the queens. We can’t wait to see what drama and glamour next week’s episode will bring. Tune in next week for another recap of RuPaul’s Drag Race, Season 17, Episode 4. Until then, remember to always stay fierce and fabulous!
