  • Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF Should Be on Every Income Investor’s Radar

There is a huge temptation for income-focused investors to buy the highest-yielding stocks in an effort to boost the cash they generate from their portfolios. Anyone who has done this likely knows that buying based on yield alone can end up with you buying poorly run companies and result in diminished returns through often painful dividend cuts.

This helps make an exchange-traded fund (ETF) like Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF (SCHD -1.11%) so interesting. Here’s why this income-focused ETF should be on your radar today.

What does Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF do?

The very first thing that Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF does when creating its portfolio is to limit its pool of stocks to just those that have 10 or more annual dividend increases behind them. (Real estate investment trusts are excluded from consideration.) This is a fairly stiff bar that only strong and consistent business can surpass. And it sets the stage for an approach that deftly attempts to balance yield with company quality.

Four hands holding puzzle pieces together.

The second step for Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF is to create a composite score for each company in its investable pool. The metrics used to create this score include cash flow to total debt, return on equity, dividend yield, and a company’s five-year dividend growth rate. Cash flow to total debt is a financial strength measure, return on equity is a measure of company quality, and dividend growth and yield are both income-related factors.

The scores are ranked from best to worst, and the 100 companies with the best scores get into the portfolio. The portfolio is weighted by market capitalization, so the largest companies have the biggest impact on performance. Like most ETFs, the portfolio is re-examined on a regular basis (yearly), so it always has the best investment candidates in the portfolio. You get all of this for a fairly small expense ratio of 0.06%.

    SCHD data by YCharts

Why is Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF so attractive?

The simple reason why Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF is a great income option is that it basically does exactly what you would do when looking for a dividend stock. Who wouldn’t want to own financially strong companies with good businesses that have high yields?

That said, the screens are more restrictive than simply picking the highest-yielding stocks. So the ETF’s yield is around 3.6%. That’s well above the 1.2% offered up by the S&P 500 index, but there are plenty of other ETFs out there with higher yields.

You might even want to buy some of those higher-yielding ETFs, too. But you’ll probably want the foundation of your portfolio to focus on financially strong companies with good businesses. This is what Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF provides in a single investment and why it should be a core holding for dividend investors.

Given that it updates its portfolio annually, meanwhile, you never have to worry about it straying too far from its approach of picking good companies with attractive dividend yields. The best selection of dividend stocks will be packed into the ETF every year.

    SCHD Dividend Yield Chart

SCHD Dividend Yield data by YCharts

However, don’t make the mistake of thinking that Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF is only for ETF investors. You can use this as a foundation on which to build an individual stock portfolio, too. Just make sure that you aren’t unknowingly doubling up on investments that may be in the ETF’s portfolio (unless that’s what you want to do).

Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF is a buy and long-term hold

It isn’t often that investment options as attractive as Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF come along. And sometimes when they do show up, they get bid up to the point where they are no longer attractive. But because of the nature of exchange-traded funds, that can’t happen with Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF.

The key is to understand the approach this dividend ETF takes and, if you see the value on offer, buy it and hold it forever. And don’t worry too much about the timing of your purchase, especially if you are still in the process of building your nest egg. If that’s the case, you should probably just keep putting money into the ETF whenever you can so you can benefit from the long-term appeal of its investment approach.

As an income investor, it’s crucial to have a diversified portfolio that includes dividend-paying stocks. One way to achieve this is by adding the Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF to your radar.

This ETF offers exposure to high-quality U.S. companies that have a consistent track record of paying dividends. With a low expense ratio and a solid performance history, the Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF is a great option for investors looking to generate passive income through dividends.

By including this ETF in your portfolio, you can benefit from the potential for capital appreciation while also receiving regular dividend payments. This can help you build a steady stream of income over time, making it a valuable addition to your investment strategy.

Overall, the Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF is a reliable option for income investors looking to diversify their portfolios and generate passive income through dividends. Make sure to keep this ETF on your radar as you continue to build and grow your investment portfolio.

  • Gabriel and William Saliba to renew ‘war’ with Erling Haaland as Arsenal face Man City – The Radar | Football News

Welcome to The Radar, a Sky Sports column in which Nick Wright uses a blend of data and opinion to shed light on need-to-know stories from up and down the Premier League. This week:

Gabriel, Saliba and Haaland to do battle
Versatile Gray a bright spot for Spurs
    Iraola’s defensive innovation
A player to watch this weekend

Gabriel, Saliba and Haaland face off again

Erling Haaland telling Mikel Arteta to “stay humble” was the headline-grabbing moment from the fiery exchanges which followed September’s 2-2 draw between Manchester City and Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium. But his battle with Gabriel was where it all started.

Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player

Watch how the explosive finale to Man City’s last meeting with Arsenal unfolded

Haaland could be seen throwing the ball into the back of Gabriel’s head after John Stones’ stoppage-time equaliser, with the pair clashing again from the kick-off. On Sunday, live on Sky Sports, they will renew their “war”, as termed by Gabriel, at the Emirates Stadium.

It’s a battle, a war. It’s normal to have provocative acts in football, it’s part of the game. Now this is over and we are waiting for them at our ground

    Gabriel speaking in September

Haaland scored the opener in that last meeting, racing onto Savinho’s pass and finishing coolly. But few centre-back pairings have made life more difficult for him than Gabriel and William Saliba.

His goal in the September game came after three meetings without even a shot on target, including last season’s Community Shield.

Since the start of last season, Haaland has averaged 0.33 goals per 90 minutes against Arsenal compared 0.91 per 90 minutes against other sides. He has taken fewer shots and those he has taken have registered lower on the expected goals scale.

Gabriel and Saliba have shown the capacity to stifle him, in other words, as they have so many others. Arsenal have a superior defensive record to any other Premier League side since the start of the 2022/23 season. The importance of their centre-backs is clear.

Arsenal have conceded an average of only 0.8 goals per game with Gabriel and Saliba starting compared to 1.4 per game without them. The difference in their points per game and win rate is similarly stark, from 2.3 to 1.8 and 73 per cent to 47 per cent respectively.

Even in the context of Arsenal’s difficulties, the pair have been particularly effective this season, limiting opponents to a meagre 0.71 goals per game when starting together, putting them just ahead of Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk on 0.78.

Of course, they know full well just how devastating Haaland can be.

Manchester City’s Haaland-inspired 4-1 thrashing of Arsenal in April 2023 came with Rob Holding deputising for the injured Saliba but both were present for their 3-1 loss two months earlier, in which Haaland also scored. His goal at the Etihad Stadium in September came when he exploited a gap between them.

    Sunday 2nd February 4:00pm

    Kick off 4:30pm

Haaland also comes into this meeting in fine form. After a dip between September and December, he has scored six goals in his last seven games. He will be just as fired up as those tasked with stopping him on Sunday. Expect more fireworks to follow.

    Gray filling holes for Spurs

Micky van de Ven came through Tottenham’s Europa League win over Elfsborg unscathed on his return to action but an injury to Radu Dragusin, his second-half replacement, means there’s little prospect of Archie Gray getting a rest against Brentford on Sunday.

The 18-year-old has started 14 consecutive games for Spurs amid their injury crisis. The fact he has shone so brightly during a dismal run of form for Ange Postecoglou’s side is even more impressive given the number of roles he has been asked to fulfil.

Archie Gray has played in numerous positions for Spurs this season
    Image:
Archie Gray has played in numerous positions for Spurs this season

Gray started as Spurs’ right-sided centre-back against Elfsborg having played at left-back in their previous two games, against Hoffenheim and Leicester. Before that, against Everton, he started in central midfield, having been their left-sided centre-back against Arsenal only a few days earlier.

The circumstances would be demanding enough for a young player even without the positional changes. But Gray has taken it all in his stride, demonstrating extraordinary versatility and emerging from a torrid run for Spurs with his own reputation enhanced.

    Iraola ripping up defensive rulebook

Andoni Iraola’s Bournemouth host Liverpool on Saturday having extended their unbeaten run to 11 games with last weekend’s 5-0 thrashing of Nottingham Forest. A point off the Champions League spots, they continue to defy the odds, despite a lengthy injury list.

They are doing it with one of the youngest sides in the Premier League this season. But what is really unusual about Bournemouth is that their youthfulness is concentrated in defence.

At centre-back, a position in which experience and knowhow are traditionally deemed crucial, Iraola is using the 22-year-old Illia Zabarnyi and the 19-year-old Dean Huijsen, a pairing roughly six years younger than the Premier League average this season.

Not that you would know it to watch them. The pair have developed an excellent understanding, displaying a level of assuredness to bely their years. Iraola’s side have only lost one of the 12 Premier League games they have started together and kept clean sheets in five.

Iraola’s preference for youth is not limited to his centre-backs. At left-back, there is the 21-year-old Milos Kerkez. At right-back, Julian Araujo, 23, was generally favoured before his injury, with James Hill, also 23, subsequently emerging as second choice when fit.

In Huijsen’s case, it is partly a story of circumstance, with Marcos Senesi unavailable due to injury. But it is also a stylistic choice. Iraola’s commitment to throwing bodies forward in attack demands defenders with the dynamism to cope when the ball is turned over.

“There are probably times when we suffer, experience-wise, because a lot of them are very young,” he explained to Sky Sports in an office at the Vitality Stadium in October. “But they give us the ability to defend big spaces and cope with those situations.”

The club have recruited with Iraola’s high-intensity approach in mind, making youth a priority. “You have to play to your strengths,” added Iraola. “That is why it helps to have a young team with players who can play with high energy, in a high rhythm.”

Jamie Carragher dissects the crucial role of Ryan Christie in Bournemouth’s recent 4-1 win over Newcastle

Carry on like this and it might prove difficult to keep their defensive unit together. Huijsen, a bargain £12.8m signing from Juventus, is sure to attract interest. Kerkez is a reported target for Liverpool.

But don’t expect Iraola to change tack. In fact, in Kerkez’s case, he may already have a successor in place in Julio Soler, the 19-year-old signed from Argentine club Lanus earlier this month. Bournemouth and their head coach continue to do things their own way.

Player Radar: Who else to keep an eye on

Kevin Schade continues to quietly impress for Brentford. The 23-year-old has scored six goals at an average of 0.50 per 90 minutes this season, putting him level with Wolves’ Matheus Cunha and not far behind his team-mate Bryan Mbeumo on 0.61. Spurs beware.

Live Radar: What’s on Sky this weekend?

Wolves host Aston Villa in a Black Country derby on Saturday Night Football, with coverage starting on Sky Sports Premier League and Main Event from 5pm ahead of the 5.30pm kick-off.

Super Sunday sees Brentford take on Spurs in the early game, kicking off at 2pm, with Arsenal’s meeting with Man City following at 4.30pm. Coverage of that double-header begins on Sky Sports Premier League and Main Event at 1pm.

Don’t miss Monday Night Football as Graham Potter returns to his former club Chelsea with West Ham. Kick-off is at 8pm, with David Jones and Jamie Carragher live on Sky Sports Premier League and Main Event from 6.30pm.

  • Cole Palmer outshining Phil Foden as Chelsea’s new leader prepares for Man City reunion – The Radar | Football News

Welcome to The Radar, a Sky Sports column in which Nick Wright uses a blend of data and opinion to shed light on need-to-know stories from up and down the Premier League. This week:

    Palmer second only to Salah?
    Murillo’s outrageous long shots
    Van Nistelrooy’s Leicester woes

    Foden face-off for ever-improving Palmer

Cole Palmer will hope to show Manchester City what might have been when he returns to the Etihad Stadium on Saturday. The 22-year-old, a revelation for Chelsea following his £42.5m arrival last season, continues to go from strength to strength.

Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player

Cole Palmer replicated some memorable Premier League goals when he sat down goalkeeper Mark Travers with his clever finish against Bournemouth

Chelsea go into the game two points ahead of City in the table, a 20-point swing from last season which can be partly attributed to the contrasting fortunes of their No 10s.

While Phil Foden is only just finding form after an indifferent start to the campaign, Palmer has picked up where he left off, the goals and assists flowing to such an extent that only Mohamed Salah has a higher combined total since his move to Chelsea.

Foden, of course, won a PFA and FWA Player of the Year double last year. He has also scored four goals in his last two Premier League appearances, against Brentford and Ipswich.

Over the course of the last season and a half, though, Palmer comes out comfortably on top both as a scorer and a creator.

    Radar graphic
    Image:
Cole Palmer boasts superior numbers to Phil Foden

Their meeting makes for an intriguing sub-plot given Foden’s presence was one of the reasons for his fellow academy graduate’s exit. And Palmer’s exploits this term are arguably even more impressive than last season’s given the attention he is facing.

Palmer is now man-marked in most games. He is being fouled 2.1 times per 90 minutes compared to only 0.9 times last season. “No one really knew much about him when he came so it was a free-hit for him,” said Paul Merson last month. “Now he is the big boy. Teams are trying to stop him but they can’t.

    Saturday 25th January 5:00pm

    Kick off 5:30pm

“That shows you how good he is.”

Palmer’s solution, implemented with the help of head coach Enzo Maresca, has been to take up positions right across the front line. He is nominally Chelsea’s No 10, having mostly been used off the right last season, but he goes where the space is, encouraged to drift.

    Radar graphic
    Image:
Cole Palmer’s heat map this season shows the evolution of his role

It helps, of course, that he remains seemingly impervious to pressure, a trait typified by his stoppage-time penalty in Chelsea’s 4-4 draw against his former club at Stamford Bridge last term and one which continues to shine through in his perfect spot-kick record.

He has embraced an altogether different level of responsibility to Foden, accounting for 46 per cent of Chelsea’s goals and assists since his arrival, compared to Foden’s 25 per cent for Manchester City. That responsibility is not limited to scoring or creating, either.

Palmer did neither in Chelsea’s 3-1 win over Wolves on Monday Night Football and yet Maresca labelled his performance one of his best. “He was there asking for the ball in a difficult moment for the team in the second half,” he said. “He was the leader of the team.”

It is more evidence of a player adapting, evolving and finding ways to keep getting better. Saturday’s meeting with his former club Manchester City, and his former team-mate Foden, is a chance to show them his progress first-hand.

    Maverick Murillo is worth celebrating

Nottingham Forest supporters had more reasons to celebrate this week as Murillo and Chris Wood signed new contracts at the City Ground. The pair have been key figures in the side’s remarkable transformation under head coach Nuno Espirito Santo.

Murillo, in particular, has been a joy to watch since his arrival from Corinthians at the start of last season. A keen dribbler who loves a shot from long range, the Brazil international’s maverick tendencies are rare in the modern game and rarer still from a centre-back.

Murillo has made seven more successful dribbles than any other centre-back
    Image:
Murillo has made seven more successful dribbles than any other centre-back

His player-of-the-match performance in the recent 1-1 draw with leaders Liverpool summed up the breadth of his offering.

Murillo was imperious defensively, his total of 17 clearances the highest by any player in a Premier League game all season. But he also took any chance he got to rampage forward.

In the first half, there was a thumping shot from 35 yards out which whistled just past Alisson’s right-hand post. In the second, he had an effort blocked from near the halfway line.

Murillo's shot location map highlights his love of long-range shooting
    Image:
Murillo’s shot location map highlights his love of long-range shooting

Last season, he tried his luck from even further out, taking two shots from inside his own half, one of which, against Luton in March, measured at 78 yards from goal and required a panicked save from a back-peddling Thomas Kaminski, who pushed it over the bar.

Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player

Murillo nearly scored from 78 yards out against Luton last season

His ambition shines through on the pitch and it was also clear in conversation with him soon after his arrival in England last season, when he declared Forest could reach “unimaginable heights”.

It felt fanciful but here were are. Two-thirds into the campaign, Forest sit third, level on points with second-placed Arsenal. His new contract suggests he believes the best is yet to come.

    Van Nistelrooy under pressure

Ruud van Nistelrooy takes his struggling Leicester side to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday having been booed and taunted with cries of “you don’t know what you’re doing” by fans during their 2-0 loss to Fulham at the King Power Stadium.

Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player

Watch highlights from Leicester’s loss to Fulham

The catalyst was the withdrawal of playmaker Bilal El Khannouss when Leicester were trailing in the second half. Van Nistelrooy opted not to explain the decision after the game but it was made to look worse by Fulham’s second goal arriving minutes later.

The Dutchman’s tenure started well, with Leicester beating West Ham 3-1 in his opening game in charge at the beginning of December. But they have not won since. The defeat to Fulham was their seventh in a row in the Premier League. Performances have got worse, not better.

Leicester's form has worsened under Ruud van Nistelrooy
    Image:
Leicester’s form has worsened under Ruud van Nistelrooy

Steve Cooper was not a popular appointment given his ties to Nottingham Forest but supporters fear the club have harmed their chances of staying up, rather than helped them, with their choice of replacement and it is easy to understand why.

Van Nistelrooy has of course been dealt a difficult hand. The squad is clearly underpowered and progress to strengthen it has been slow in the January transfer window. But the mood in the stands will only worsen if they see more of the same against Spurs on Sunday.

  • Who’s on Mike Vrabel’s radar for Patriots coordinators?

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Quick-hit thoughts and notes around the New England Patriots and NFL:

    1. OC intrigue: In his first week as Patriots head coach, Mike Vrabel began meeting with members of the team’s 2024 coaching staff and identifying coaches from other teams to interview.

Building a staff with those who reflect his vision — to teach, develop and inspire by making a connection — is one of his top priorities.

“As with any staff, there’s going to be turnover,” Vrabel said at his introductory news conference. “There’s going to be new coaches, new faces — some that I will have history [with], some that I won’t. That’s what the interview process is.”

Vrabel isn’t putting a timeline on forming a staff, in part because some of the coaches he plans to talk to are still involved in the playoffs and potentially could be involved in Super Bowl LIX on Feb. 9.

One such example is Detroit Lions defensive line coach/run-game coordinator Terrell Williams, who was one of Vrabel’s most trusted assistants in his six-year tenure as Tennessee Titans head coach. Vrabel thought so highly of Williams that he added assistant head coach to his responsibilities in his final season.

Some around the NFL believe Williams, 50, would be Vrabel’s ideal pick as defensive coordinator. And if that doesn’t happen, Vrabel could look to others who coached alongside Williams in Tennessee, such as Philadelphia Eagles inside linebackers coach Bobby King, Miami Dolphins outside linebackers coach Ryan Crow and Titans passing-game coordinator/cornerbacks coach Chris Harris.

Those are easier-to-identify links to Vrabel in arguably his greatest area of expertise — defense — and names that have been more frequently mentioned in conversations with NFL coaching, front office and agent sources. On special teams, momentum seemed to be building for Vrabel to retain coordinator Jeremy Springer and top assistant Tom Quinn, with Quinn having coached on Vrabel’s staff in Tennessee.

There has been less certainty in those circles on what Vrabel might be thinking for offensive coordinator, which is naturally one of the most important decisions he’ll make. That is due, in part, to the presence of promising quarterback Drake Maye.

Vrabel said on sports radio WEEI that he has a “long list” and confirmed it includes former Las Vegas Raiders head coach and Patriots coordinator Josh McDaniels, who still lives in the region and last worked with the Patriots in 2021 when he worked wonders with then-rookie Mac Jones.

“I’ve had a relationship with Josh, and I’ve had relationships with other offensive coaches and defensive coaches that we’re going to interview and bring in here,” Vrabel said.

Vrabel has the highest regard for Arthur Smith, his former Titans OC and current Pittsburgh Steelers OC. Smith, a former head coach for the Atlanta Falcons, is a head coaching candidate with the New York Jets and Chicago Bears — presumably taking him off the board. Former Titans coaches Tim Kelly (New York Giants TEs coach) and Tony Dews (Jets RBs coach) are among others who have ties to Vrabel and could be on his radar in some form (Kelly was Titans OC in Vrabel’s final season).

When Vrabel was initially hired as Titans coach in 2018, then-Ohio State co-offensive coordinator Ryan Day was among those he pursued as his OC. Day’s mentor, Chip Kelly, currently serves as Ohio State’s OC and would be an outside-the-box possibility for Vrabel to consider. Kelly’s offense will be on display Monday in the College Football Playoff National Championship game between Ohio State and Notre Dame (7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN).

Vrabel ultimately hired then-Los Angeles Rams offensive coordinator Matt LaFleur, who had a one-year stop before becoming Packers head coach (with Smith succeeding him in 2019). Vrabel could also consider a similar approach in 2025, with Rams offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur or even Rams QBs coach Dave Ragone.

The team interviewed Bears passing game coordinator Thomas Brown last week, and has requested permission to speak with Chargers passing game coordinator Marcus Brady, per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

As for the vision of what Vrabel hopes the Patriots’ offense will be, he highlighted an “aggressive but not reckless” approach. He said creativity and versatility will be important, too, assuming the players can handle it. That means both zone and gap schemes in the running game, under center and shotgun in the passing game and tempo.

Whom Vrabel chooses to ultimately coordinate it remains one of the team’s most intriguing storylines.

    2. Assistants on radar? One point that Boston College head coach Bill O’Brien made during one of Vrabel’s first radio interviews — when O’Brien called to congratulate him — was that Vrabel would create a clear standard for the Patriots with conditioning and weightlifting.

Sources around the NFL expect Vrabel to bring Frank Piraino, his former strength coach in Tennessee, to New England to achieve that goal. Piraino, who knows the area well from his time at Boston College, spent last season with the Giants.

And just as Bill Belichick had football research director Ernie Adams to assist him with game management, Vrabel had John Streicher in that role with the Titans. Now, Streicher is expected to follow Vrabel to New England. Streicher, who like Vrabel is an Ohio State alum, spent the 2024 season with the Rams.

Bruschi excited by Patriots’ hiring of Vrabel

Tedy Bruschi reacts to the Patriots hiring former teammate Mike Vrabel as head coach.

    3. Cowden file: Longtime scout and personnel executive Ryan Cowden, who will be joining the Patriots in a prominent front office role according to a team source, spent the first 16 years of his career with the Panthers and rose through the ranks with Buffalo Bills GM Brandon Beane and Giants GM Joe Schoen.

“A good evaluator who stands firm,” one longtime executive said.

Cowden and Vrabel crossed paths in Tennessee, where Cowden was hired in 2016, two years before Vrabel took over as head coach. That history was a driving force in Cowden, 46, landing in New England.

    4. Judon pick: The Patriots’ trade of outside linebacker Matthew Judon to the Falcons in August yielded the 77th overall pick in 2025 draft — the 13th slot in the third round as a result of the Falcons’ 8-9 record (tied with three other teams). Not a bad return.

Rams starting outside linebacker Byron Young, out of Tennessee, was the 77th pick in the 2023 draft and an example of the type of player the Patriots could land if they draft and develop well.

Meanwhile, Judon is scheduled for unrestricted free agency this offseason.

The Patriots currently have nine picks — first round (No. 4), second round, third round, third round (from Falcons), fourth round, fifth round, seventh round (from Titans), seventh round, seventh round (from Los Angeles Chargers).

    5. Attendance check: Two players on the Patriots’ roster, center David Andrews and long-snapper Joe Cardona, were present for Vrabel’s introduction. Vrabel approached them after his remarks for a hug.

Cardona shared that one thing stood out from facing Vrabel’s teams: toughness.

Patriots Hall of Famers Troy Brown (skill development coach) and Andre Tippett (executive director of community affairs) were among the notable alums in attendance. Team president Jonathan Kraft was also on hand for the Vrabel announcement.

    6. Rhamondre’s visit: Running back Rhamondre Stevenson was still in town last week, which gave him an opportunity to meet Vrabel for the first time since Vrabel was named head coach. Stevenson’s 2024 season didn’t unfold as he hoped, as he finished with 801 yards on 207 carries (3.9 ypc), with seven touchdowns and an NFL-high seven fumbles.

Part of his shaky season was tied to shaky offensive line play, so it had to be music to his ears to hear Vrabel say: “We have to focus on the line. I think the best teams right now in the National Football League are the ones that have the best offensive lines, that are changing the line of scrimmage.”

    7. Peppers trial: The jury trial for safety Jabrill Peppers, who in early October pleaded not guilty after being arrested on charges that include strangulation and drug possession, is scheduled for Wednesday. The sides were in court Jan. 10 for a final pretrial hearing in which judge Mark Coven made evidence-based rulings on what would be allowed at the jury trial.

    8. Vrabel’s rules: Vrabel said the Patriots won’t have a long list of rules, but it will start with “being on time” and “being respectful.” He also highlighted three themes for players: Put the team first, know what to do and play fast/aggressive.

“Our effort and finish is going to be the contract we make with our teammates,” he said.

    9. They said it: “We’re going to remove entitlement from our football team. We’re going to get everything that we’ve earned from the head coach to the position coaches, all the way down to the players. We’re going to earn the right to be here every single day.” — Vrabel, in his introductory news conference

    10. Did you know?: Special-teamer Brenden Schooler (first team) and cornerback Christian Gonzalez (second team) were named to the AP All-Pro team, joining punt returner Marcus Jones (2022, first team), special-teamer Matthew Slater (2021, second team) and cornerback J.C. Jackson (2021, second team) as the past five New England players to earn the honor. Left guard Joe Thuney (2019, second team) was the most recent Patriots offensive player to be All-Pro.

With the recent departure of both offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and defensive coordinator Matt Patricia, all eyes are on New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel as he looks to fill these key coaching positions. Vrabel, who has been at the helm of the Patriots since 2020, is known for his meticulous attention to detail and strategic mindset.

So, who is on Vrabel’s radar for these crucial coordinator roles? Speculation is swirling, but some potential candidates include former Patriots players turned coaches, such as Jerod Mayo and Troy Brown. Both Mayo and Brown have excelled in their coaching roles and have a deep understanding of the Patriots’ system and culture.

Another name that has been tossed around is former Detroit Lions head coach Matt Patricia, who has a strong history with Vrabel and the Patriots organization. Patricia’s defensive expertise could be a valuable asset to Vrabel as he looks to rebuild the Patriots’ defense.

Regardless of who ultimately fills these roles, one thing is certain: Mike Vrabel will carefully consider all options and make a decision that he believes will best benefit the Patriots moving forward. Stay tuned for updates as the coaching search unfolds.

  • Michelle Obama’s Inauguration snub was always on MAGA’s radar: ‘She hates him,’ but Trump team ‘having a good laugh’

Michelle Obama skipped Jimmy Carter’s funeral on January 9, where she would have apparently been seated next to Donald Trump. Although her absence has been attributed to the “extended” Hawaii vacation, Obama divorce rumours also took flight recently. Amid all that back-and-forth speculative chaos, the former first lady is seemingly snubbing the incoming president of the United States yet again by skipping his swearing-in ceremony on January 20.

Former First Lady Michelle Obama will not be attending Donald Trump’s inauguration on January 9, 2025.(Elijah Nouvelage/Getty Images/AFP)

Trump team never expected Michelle Obama to attend Trump’s Inauguration

Meanwhile, the Trump team is believed to have foreseen her move from a mile away, claiming she “hates” the president-elect. Missing out on Carter’s funeral to possibly avoid sitting next to Trump is also being viewed as “her way of protesting” him, according to Page Six.

Also read | Payback for 2021? Kamala Harris’ massive snub to JD Vance again breaks Inauguration tradition

A MAGA source has since declared that those involved in planning the Inauguration Day schedules “are having a good laugh” because “they didn’t expect her to come anyway.”

Like the arrangement at the January 9 service that honoured America’s oldest living president, Barack Obama is expected to attend the 60th Inaugural Ceremonies alone. Despite this year’s snub, the former first lady was there for the Republican leader’s Inauguration in 2017.

However, she didn’t mince her words while sharing her experience of the day on ‘The Light Podcast’: “To sit on that stage and watch the opposite of what we represented on display — there was no diversity, there was no colour on that stage. There was no reflection of the broader sense of America.”

During the 2024 presidential campaign period, she again took a swing at Trump at the Democratic National Convention, saying, “For years, Donald Trump did everything in his power to try to make people fear us. See, his limited, narrow view of the world made him feel threatened by the existence of two hard-working, highly educated, successful people who happen to be Black.”

Democratic sources respond to Michelle Obama’s apparent snub

Shortly after the initial announcement of Michelle’s decision to skip the upcoming Inauguration Day, a source close to the Obamas’ circle told Page Six that she’s never been “fake” or “phony.” Revealing why she had possibly chosen not to attend the ceremony, they added, “She’s always been very deliberate about where and how she shows up. She showed up reluctantly for the election. They were united, but she doesn’t have to unify around [Trump]. She doesn’t have to say anything. Her absence speaks volumes.”

In the meantime, another Democratic source defended her choice by alluding to the Trumps missing out on the sitting president’s inaugural: “Donald Trump and Melania didn’t go to Joe Biden’s Inauguration and nobody cared. No one said anything.”

Other Dems leaders attending the Inauguration

On the contrary, former US presidents George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Bill Clinton are expected at the Inauguration, alongside outgoing commander-in-chief Joe Biden. First ladies who’ve previously held the position, Laura Bush, Hillary Clinton, and Jill Biden, are also poised to attend the event. NBC News has since also reported that although they will be there for the swearing-in ceremony, Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush will not be there for Trump’s traditional inaugural lunch.

It has been widely reported that former First Lady Michelle Obama will not attend President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration on January 20th, 2021. While her absence may come as no surprise to some, it has raised eyebrows among supporters of the incoming administration.

Many have speculated that Obama’s decision to skip the event is a pointed snub at outgoing President Donald Trump, whom she has openly criticized in the past. According to sources close to the Trump team, they are “having a good laugh” over the perceived slight.

“She hates him,” one insider said of Obama’s feelings towards Trump. “It’s no secret that she has no love for him, and this is just another way for her to show it.”

While Obama has not publicly commented on her decision to skip the inauguration, her absence is sure to be noticed by both supporters and critics alike. Some have praised her for standing up to Trump, while others have criticized her for not putting aside political differences for the sake of unity.

Regardless of the reasons behind her decision, one thing is clear: Michelle Obama’s inauguration snub was always on MAGA’s radar, and it has only served to further highlight the deep divides in American politics.
