Express View: From Rahul Gandhi, a disquieting petulance
Jan 17, 2025 07:04 IST
First published on: Jan 17, 2025 at 07:04 ISTIt is not surprising that the BJP should seize upon what Rahul Gandhi said while speaking to party leaders at the inauguration of the new Congress headquarters in the capital: “Do not think that we are fighting a fair fight… we are now fighting the BJP, the RSS and the Indian state itself”. A battery of BJP ministers, leaders, spokespersons have immediately picked out the “…Indian state itself” part of Rahul-speak and brought out an array of rehearsed spectres to slap him with — Gandhi’s comments point to his “Urban Naxal links” and belong to the “George Soros playbook” of subversion, they show that he is speaking for an “eco-system” and “deep state” bent on “breaking India and dividing our society”. The BJP’s is a political critique, it thrives on an overreading. And yet, having said that, it must also be pointed out that there is something deeply problematic about Gandhi’s apocalyptic “all institutions are captured by the BJP” framing.
It is one thing to say that the BJP, armed with a winner-takes-all and take-no-prisoners attitude, does not hesitate to weaponise its mandate to assert dominance and cramp spaces for political opponents and institutions. But to suggest, as Gandhi has done earlier, and as he did again on Wednesday, that the entire system is rigged, to point fingers at the conduct of the Election Commission, for instance, without presenting any verifiable evidence — in fact, his 1 crore extra voters in six months in Maharashtra figure is wrong — or to paint a wide-ranging conspiracy that seamlessly encompasses the EC, investigative agencies and RSS chief, is not just overblown and mistaken but also counter-productive. Gandhi’s rhetoric seems frozen and stilted in its persistent underestimation of the diversity of moving parts, and the range of opportunities and openings that are built into the design and practice of India’s large and sprawling constitutional democracy. The deep pessimism embedded in Gandhi’s worldview is also a political dead-end. It does a grave disservice to his standing and role as the Leader of Opposition and top leader of his party. If all is corrupted and captured, as he says it is, what is the raison d’etre for Congress and the Opposition, and where is the space for politics? In a sense, Gandhi is also walking into the trap the BJP has set for him — after all, the BJP constantly tries to paint him into a hard left corner, from where he will find it difficult to move to the centre, the only place from which anyone can hope to govern a country of India’s diversities.
And even though words must be seen alongside their meanings, the fact is that in politics, words matter. It is the responsibility of the leader to choose them carefully. Earlier, Gandhi has referred to India as a union of states — which it is — and framed the union as being in opposition to a nation — which it is not. Equating the political fight against the BJP-RSS as one against the “Indian state” itself is to conflate the BJP government with India’s state. It shows an inability to articulate the big idea, to make crucial distinctions. His petulance is disquieting, it hurts the opposition he now professes to lead.

Rahul Gandhi, the former president of the Indian National Congress party, has been known for his impassioned speeches and strong opposition to the ruling government. However, in recent months, there has been a noticeable shift in his demeanor, with many observers noting a growing sense of petulance in his public statements and actions. This change in Rahul Gandhi’s behavior was particularly evident during a recent press conference, where he seemed visibly frustrated and agitated when faced with tough questions from journalists. Instead of answering the queries with poise and clarity, he resorted to deflecting and dismissing them with a dismissive tone.
This petulant behavior has not gone unnoticed by the public, with many questioning whether Rahul Gandhi is truly fit to lead the opposition and effectively challenge the current government. While his passion and dedication to his political beliefs are commendable, his inability to handle criticism and tough questions in a mature and composed manner is cause for concern.
As a prominent figure in Indian politics, Rahul Gandhi must strive to maintain a sense of dignity and professionalism, even in the face of adversity. It is important for him to set a positive example for his supporters and demonstrate that he is capable of handling the responsibilities that come with being a leader.
Ultimately, Rahul Gandhi’s disquieting petulance serves as a reminder that emotional intelligence and grace under pressure are essential qualities for any political leader. It remains to be seen whether he will be able to rise above his current behavior and regain the respect and confidence of the Indian public.

India vs Australia 5th Test Day 1 LIVE Score: KL Rahul opens again after Rohit Sharma dropped, IND win toss and bat
India vs Australia 5th Test Day 1 LIVE Score: Jasprit Bumrah has said that Rohit Sharma “opted to rest” in Sydney
India vs Australia 5th Test Day 1 LIVE Score: Rohit Sharma is sitting out and Jasprit Bumrah is captain again as India won the toss and chose to bat first at the Sydney Cricket Ground ahead of the fifth Test against Australia. The fifth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, beginning Friday in Sydney, has preceded significant controversy surrounding the Indian camp, with mounting speculation that the out-of-form Rohit Sharma will be dropped due to his poor performances. As the Indian team battles a series of challenges both on and off the field, all eyes will be on head coach Gautam Gambhir’s handling of the situation, especially after he left the question of whether Rohit would feature in the playing XI unanswered at Thursday’s pre-match press conference.…Read More
Rohit, who has mustered just 31 runs from five innings in this series at an average of 6.2, has come under intense scrutiny. His dismal run of form comes on the back of questionable decision-making as captain, as India trail the series 1-2. “We will take a call on the playing XI after looking at the pitch,” Gambhir had said when asked about Rohit’s inclusion in the XI for the Sydney Test. If Rohit doesn’t play at the SCG, he would become the first Indian captain to be dropped due to poor form.
As per reports, Rohit’s lack of runs makes it likely that India could turn to Shubman Gill, who may return to the side in place of the Indian captain at No. 3. The team’s performance woes are not limited to Rohit, though. Another significant issue has been Rishabh Pant’s shot selection, which has reportedly drawn scathing criticism from Gambhir.
Pant’s questionable form in the series, combined with his inability to capitalize on crucial moments, has seen him become a target for Gambhir’s wrath. Reports suggest that Gambhir had an “honest conversation” with the players post-India’s heavy loss in Melbourne.
Amid all this turmoil, one thing is clear: the Indian team is in transition. Under head coach Gambhir’s leadership, the focus has shifted firmly towards performance, with senior players no longer guaranteed a spot. His no-nonsense approach has certainly created some tension in the dressing room, especially with key figures like Rohit Sharma; an Indian Express report had also revealed earlier this week that another unnamed senior player of the team was ready to step in as ‘interim captain’ to succeed Rohit, following the side’s poor performances.
While some, like Bumrah, have shown resilience and class, others, including Pant and even Virat Kohli, have failed to rise to the occasion in critical moments. The situation is further complicated by reports of disharmony within the team, with tensions potentially affecting the morale and performance of players ahead of this crucial match.
With the World Test Championship (WTC) final within reach, the pressure on India has intensified. A loss to Australia in this final Test will not only see India lose the Border-Gavaskar Trophy; it will also all but end their chances of qualifying for the WTC final at Lord’s. India currently require a win and hope that Sri Lanka win both of their Tests against Australia in order to retain a chance of a top-two finish in the WTC table. With Australia firmly in control of the series, India has it all to do.
While India faces internal strife, Australia are emerging as a much stronger force, especially with Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne regaining form. The Australian team will also hand a debut to all-rounder Beau Webster, who replaces Mitchell Marsh after the latter’s lackluster performances with the bat.
In addition, Mitchell Starc has been cleared to play after recovering from his back injury, adding further firepower to Australia’s bowling attack. The Sydney pitch is expected to favour seamers, with Australia’s fast-bowling unit keen to exploit every opportunity.
Despite the Australian team’s dominance, India will take heart from the fact that Jasprit Bumrah, their own pace spearhead, has been in outstanding form. With 30 wickets in the series at a sub-20 average, Bumrah has been India’s standout performer and could be a key figure in India’s push for a series-levelling win. Bumrah could also lead the team as captain if Rohit Sharma is dropped, and his leadership in Perth, which saw India’s only victory in the series so far, may give India the upper hand.
As the final Test approaches, India find themselves at a crossroads. The team’s transition, under the eye of head coach Gautam Gambhir, is one filled with uncertainty. Rohit Sharma’s potential exit from the team, coupled with the growing pressure on other senior members of the side, has certainly stirred some drama in the dressing room. India has everything to lose in Sydney, and how they respond to these challenges will shape their future in Test cricket in the months to come.
Here are some pointers to Day 1 of India vs Australia fifth Test:
– Jasprit Bumrah is captaining India again, with Rohit Sharma sitting out
– India won the toss and chose to bat first
– Shubman Gill returns to the No.3 spot while Prasidh Krishna replaces the injured Akash Deep

India lose Rohit, Rahul early after Australia’s 474
BORDER-GAVASKAR TROPHY, 2024-25

Rohit Sharma’s return to the top of the order was short-lived as he fell in just the second over of India’s reply to Australia’s 474. KL Rahul arrived early and looked primed to take India to Tea break in the company of Yashasvi Jaiswal, until he got an unplayable Pat Cummins delivery at the stroke of the break.
Australia resumed after an eventful morning session on 454/7 but lost two wickets in a jiffy. Mitchell Starc departed in the first over after Lunch, cleaned up by Ravindra Jadeja from round the stumps after playing down the wrong line. India had the rub of the green with Steve Smith’s wicket in the very next over – the centurion danced down for a big shot through the off-side off Akash Deep, but the ball ricocheted off his leg and rolled on to dislodge one bail as he watched on.
Final-wicket stand between Scott Boland and Nathan Lyon lasted for eight overs, with the former reviewing two LBW calls successfully before Jasprit Bumrah returned to wrap up the innings with the wicket of Lyon. The wicket came in Bumrah’s 29th over of the innings – only thrice before had he bowled more in an innings. The change in batting position didn’t bring change of fortunes for the India captain as his dismal run in BGT 2024-25 continued.
Rohit fell in the second over trying to pull a ball that wasn’t short enough, as the leading edge went to Boland at mid-on. Rahul arrived early and looked comfortable in the company of Jaiswal, who too shook off a few early nerves to grow in confidence. Right as the end of the session was approaching, Cummins got one ball to straighten off a length – squaring up Rahul and pegging back his off-stump. India headed into the break on 51/2, ceding more ground to the hosts.
The foundation for this advantage in MCG was laid in the morning session when Smith scored his 34th Test hundred – his 11th against India in the format. He overcame a short tussle against Bumrah in the first hour to torment all of India’s bowlers. India were sloppy on the field and insipid with the ball, leaking runs at a fair clip all through. Cummins joined in on the fun too, scoring a breezy 49 before holing out against Jadeja. Mitchell Starc arrived and kept Smith company while the centurion threw his bat around a little more. Australia managed to add just 20 runs to their total in the second session but the pressure is already ramped up on India following two early exits.
Brief scores: India 51/2 (Pat Cummins 2-27) trail Australia 474 (Steve Smith 140, Marnus Labuschagne 72; Jasprit Bumrah 4-99) by 423 runs

Explained Why Did KL Rahul Not Open The Batting For India vs Australia At MCG In 4th Test Rohit Sharma Yashasvi Jaiswal
KL Rahul walked out bat at number three
Photo : AP
KEY HIGHLIGHTS
- KL Rahul is India’s top run-getter in the BGT so far
- Rahul was demoted in the batting order
- Shubman Gill was dropped from the playing XI
Amid their struggles with the bat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT), India made a huge change in their batting order as KL Rahul did not open the batting despite being the team’s best batter in the series so far. Coming into the game, Rahul has 235 runs in six innings at an average of 47 with two half-centuries.
Despite being the only batter showing any semblance of consistency in the batting order, Rahul walked out to bat at number three. Indian captain Rohit Sharma walked out to open the batting with Yashasvi Jaiswal after playing at number six in the Adelaide and Brisbane Tests.
The move was a tactical choice by Team India after the surprise decision to drop Shubman Gill. Rahul replaced the 25-year-old at number three. Rohit’s bold move backfired as his poor run of form continued. The Indian captain departed after making just three runs, with Pat Cummins dismissing him in the second over of the innings.
India has played a merry-go-round with Rahul’s batting position in 2024. He started the year by playing at number six against South Africa at Cape Town before being promoted to number four in the Hyderabad Test against England. The 32-year-old missed the last four matches of the series due to an injury. He made a comeback in the home series against Bangladesh and batted at number six in Chennai and Kanpur. Rahul retained the spot for the Bengaluru Test against New Zealand but was dropped for the Pune and Mumbai Tests.
The right-handed batter opened the batting for the first time in 20 months during the Perth Test in Rohit’s absence. India decided to not change their opening combination in Adelaide and Brisbane.
Meanwhile, Rohit’s struggles with the bat this season continue with just 156 runs in 14 innings at an average of 11.07 with just one half-century.
In the recent 4th Test match between India and Australia at the MCG, fans were surprised to see KL Rahul not opening the batting for India alongside Rohit Sharma or Yashasvi Jaiswal. Many were left wondering why the talented batsman was not given the opportunity to showcase his skills at the top of the order. The decision to not have KL Rahul open the batting can be attributed to a number of factors. Firstly, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill had formed a successful opening partnership in the previous match, with both players scoring valuable runs. It is likely that the team management wanted to stick with this combination in order to maintain stability at the top of the order.
Additionally, KL Rahul has been in and out of the Indian team in recent times and has struggled to find consistency in his performances. With the emergence of young talents like Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal, the competition for opening slots has increased, making it difficult for Rahul to break into the side.
Furthermore, the team management may have felt that Rahul’s playing style and form were better suited to the middle order, where he could provide stability and firepower in the later stages of the innings.
Overall, while it may have been disappointing for fans to not see KL Rahul open the batting in the 4th Test, the decision was likely made with the best interests of the team in mind. It will be interesting to see how Rahul responds to this setback and how he continues to contribute to the Indian team in future matches.

– All four of Australia’s top order batters score fifty. Steve Smith is unbeaten on 68 off 111.
– Travis Head falls for a seven-ball duck. Jasprit Bumrah picks him as well Usman Khawaja and Mitchell Marsh.
– Australia 311 for six at stumps.
Here’s the first day’s report by K.C Vijaya Kumar:
AUS vs IND, 4th Test: Konstas shines on debut as Australia gains control on Day 1, Bumrah offers Indian counter-punch
Between overs, Kohli shoulder-barged Konstas, words were exchanged, and Khawaja tried to be the peacemaker. Whether it was accidental remains a matter of conjecture but it showed the former India captain in poor light.

#India #Australia #Live #Score #4th #Test #Day #IND #trails #AUS #runs #Rahul #Jaiswal #crease #Rohit #falls #early‘Hope common sense prevails’: Rohit Sharma gets sharp ‘team game’ reminder amid rumours of KL Rahul losing opening spot
After struggling to settle as a middle-order batter, India captain Rohit Sharma is reportedly set to return as an opener in the fourth Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, which will begin on Thursday at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. With that, KL Rahul will be pushed one spot below in the batting line-up, thus dropping to No. 3. However, the rumours left former India cricketer Dodda Ganesh fuming as he reminded the 37-year-old that cricket is a team game.
India’s captain Rohit Sharma (L) reacts as he walks off the ground due to bad light with teammate KL Rahul on day three of the third cricket Test match between Australia and India at The Gabba(AFP) It was reported by the Times of India on the eve of the match in Melbourne that Rohit, who managed just 19 runs in his last three innings as a No. 6 batter in Australia, will return to his original spot in the batting line-up. This would mean Rahul, who impressed as an opener in the ongoing tour, scoring 245 runs in six innings at 47, the best figures by an Indian batter, will bat at No. 3, leaving Shubman Gill to shift to the No. 6 position probably.
The report did not sit well with Ganesh, who only hoped that “common sense prevails,” and Rohit allows in-form Rahul to continue as an opener.
“Is there going to be a change in the opening pair? If so, it’s not the right thing to do. KL Rahul has looked very good at the top. Hope common sense prevails; and let’s not forget, cricket is a team game #BGT2024 #AUSvIND,” he tweeted.
What did Rohit Sharma say?
Rohit gave up his opening role in the series after Rahul impressed in his old batting position in Perth. With the India captain having missed the series opener owing to the birth of his second child, Rahul scored a valiant 77 and was part of a record 200-plus opening stand alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal. He then continued his sublime form, which included a knock of 84 at the Gabba that helped India avoid a follow-on.
With Rohit struggling at No. 6, veterans had urged the India captain to return as an opener in the third Test, but the team management retained the same line-up. However, unlike the build-up to the Gabba game, there was no call for the 37-year-old to assume the opening role in Melbourne. And Rohit too had stayed tightlipped when asked in the pre-match presser.
“Let’s not worry about who bats where. Something that we need to figure and not something I would be discussing here. . We will do what is best for the team,” Rohit had said on Tuesday.
In recent days, there have been rumors circulating about KL Rahul potentially losing his spot as an opener in the Indian cricket team. However, amidst all the speculation, it’s important to remember that cricket is ultimately a team game.As fans and critics dissect every move made by the selectors and team management, it’s crucial to trust in their decision-making process and have faith that they have the best interests of the team at heart. While individual performances are important, the success of the team as a whole should always be the top priority.
Rohit Sharma, who has been a crucial part of the Indian cricket team for many years, recently received a sharp reminder about the importance of playing for the team rather than personal glory. It serves as a timely reminder for all players to put aside personal agendas and egos for the greater good of the team.
So, as the speculation continues to swirl around KL Rahul’s position in the team, let’s hope that common sense prevails and the selectors make decisions that will benefit the team as a whole. After all, cricket is a team sport, and success is best achieved when everyone works together towards a common goal. Let’s trust in the process and support the team, no matter who is in the playing XI.
