New Raiders coach Pete Carroll eager to compete again after year away from football
Pete Carroll was introduced as the Las Vegas Raiders‘ new head coach on Monday, along with new general manager John Spytek. And the new regime made it quite clear that everyone in the locker room was on notice as they try to change the culture and establish a winning attitude.
“It all starts with competition,” Carroll said, repeating that theme throughout the press conference. “You’re either competing or you’re not.”
“If there’s one thing I want them to understand,” he added, “it’s that to be a great team, you have to be a great teammate.”
Asked why he wanted to return to coaching at 73 years old, Carroll said he wasn’t chasing any accomplishments. He’s already won a Super Bowl championship with the Seahawks and a college national title at USC.
During his year away from the sideline, an opportunity he said was “incredibly valuable,” Carroll wants to apply what he learned from watching JV football, his grandson play quarterback on the varsity and his son Brennan, who’s the offensive coordinator at Washington, while following the Big Ten.
He also watched former assistants Dan Quinn, head coach for the Washington Commanders, and Dave Canales, the Carolina Panthers‘ head coach, during the past season.
“Learning… You have to stay curious and make sure that you’re always on the next opportunity to be a little bit better,” he said. “I had an incredible year… It’s been a year full of just input.”
Carroll also reminded the gathered press that the last time he took a year off from football, after being fired as the New England Patriots‘ head coach, was “extraordinarily life-changing.” He took the USC job and began a legendary run that resulted in the aforementioned national championship, seven Pac-12 titles and a 97-19 record.
In addition to competition, Carroll and Spytek emphasized that finding leadership on the roster was important, even more so than roster construction.
“We’re going to turn over every stone to find that leader,” Spytek said. “Our character will be our fate.”

The Raiders have the No. 6 selection in April’s NFL Draft, though neither Spytek nor Carroll indicated if that’s where they would pursue a new QB.
The new coach and GM did not elaborate on whether or not minority owner Tom Brady, who reportedly has a 5% stake in the franchise, would take an active role in choosing a quarterback or determining the roster. But the team will “lean” on him, according to Carroll and Brady will be a part of establishing a new culture.
“He has been integrally involved. He’s been an exciting part of it,” Carroll said. “This is his opportunity to put his stamp on a franchise. He’s been involved and will continue to be involved.”
One enthusiastic cheerleader among the audience for Carroll’s presser was Marshawn Lynch, who played for the coach during his seven seasons with the Seattle Seahawks and also spent two years for the Raiders.
Lynch yelled “RAIDERS!” during Carroll’s introductory remarks, perhaps demonstrating the sort of vociferous fandom that the coach said he wanted in Allegiant Stadium. Carroll joked that it was team owner Mark Davis yelling.
Carroll hopes to find 53 more like Lynch, in addition to 65,000 of him to fill the stands, as he tries to lift the Raiders from 20-plus years of mediocrity.

HENDERSON, Nev. — The Las Vegas Raiders have hired Pete Carroll to became the franchise’s head coach, the team announced Saturday.
Carroll is getting a three-year deal with a fourth-year team option, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Friday.
Carroll, who turns 74 on Sept. 15, is one of four head coaches to have led teams to both a college football national championship and the Super Bowl. The others are Barry Switzer, Jimmy Johnson and Jim Harbaugh.
He will be the Raiders’ fifth coach, including interim coaches, since the franchise moved to Las Vegas from Oakland in 2020. The others were Jon Gruden, Rich Bisaccia, Josh McDaniels and Antonio Pierce.
Carroll will be the team’s ninth coach, including interims, since Raiders owner Mark Davis took over upon the death of his father, Al, in 2011. The others were Hue Jackson, Dennis Allen, Tony Sparano, Jack Del Rio, Gruden, Bisaccia, McDaniels and Pierce.
As such, Carroll represents stability and experience for a team needing both, especially since Gruden was forced to resign amid his email controversy in October 2021.
Carroll’s veteran presence is expected to mesh well with first-time general manager John Spytek, whose hiring was announced Friday, and help the team compete in an AFC West division that boasts coaching heavyweights in Kansas City (Andy Reid), Denver (Sean Payton) and Los Angeles (Harbaugh).
With the Seattle Seahawks, Carroll won Super Bowl XLVIII and a pair of NFC titles and made 10 playoff appearances in 14 years while going 137-89-1 in the regular season and 10-9 in the postseason to become the winningest coach in Seahawks history. Including his head coaching stints with the New York Jets, with whom he went 6-10 in 1994, and the New England Patriots, where he went 27-21 in three seasons with a playoff appearance from 1997 to 1999, his career record is 181-131-1.
After spending the 2000 season out of football and reshaping his coaching philosophy, Carroll was hired by USC, beginning a dominant nine-year run from 2001 to 2009 that included seven consecutive Pac-10 titles, a pair of national championships and a 97-19 record, though NCAA sanctions followed.
The Seahawks lured him away in 2010 with the promise of final say in personnel moves, something he didn’t have in either of his two previous head coaching stops.
Carroll is a defensive-minded coach who, along with Spytek, will have to address the large number of pending free agents on that side of the ball for Las Vegas. Among them: defensive ends Malcolm Koonce and K’Lavon Chaisson, linebackers Robert Spillane and Divine Deablo, cornerback Nate Hobbs, and safeties Tre’von Moehrig and Marcus Epps.
The Raiders hold the No. 6 overall draft pick and more than $108 million in salary cap space. They need an upgrade at quarterback but return first-team All-Pro tight end Brock Bowers.
Las Vegas fired Pierce as coach and Tom Telesco as general manager after one season together.
Pierce had been promoted from linebackers coach to interim coach upon the firing on Halloween night 2023 of McDaniels and general manager Dave Ziegler after less than two full seasons.
Las Vegas finished last in the AFC West with a 4-13 record that included a 10-game losing streak, the franchise’s longest such skid in 10 years.

Russell Wilson Reportedly a ‘Strong Option’ to Join Pete Carroll With Raiders
Cincinnati Bengals: New Defensive Coordinator Hopes to Help Bengals Start Faster in 2025
Getting off to slow starts has been a recent problem for the Cincinnati Bengals. They are 7-14-1 in September since Zac Taylor became their head coach, and new Defensive Coordinator Al Golden wants to help solve that problem.
“That’s kind of an in-house thing, like, what do we need to do in-house wise to solve that problem?” Golden said to Bengals radio play-by-play voice Dan Hoard, via Si.com. ”That’s a sensitive subject in terms of we all know that that’s something that will be on the docket this offseason in terms of starting faster. But in terms of giving you ideas, I think it’s best to keep that in-house and work through Zac on that.”
Golden was linebackers coach with the Bengals for two seasons (2020-21) before leaving to become Notre Dame’s defensive coordinator. Now that he’s back, Golden and Taylor want to help the Bengals become kingpins in the AFC North again, as they were in 2021-22, before the Ravens won the past two division titles.
“I think you’ve got to understand our division that we play in,” said Taylor, via Geoff Hobson of the team’s website. “You’re going to play six (division games) a year. That’s going to dictate, really, where you end up at the end of the season.
“I think this division is different. I think when people come and they play all four teams in this division, they feel that immediately. You’re certainly (going to) need a coordinator who has an understanding of that.”
According to recent reports, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson is being considered as a “strong option” to join forces with his former head coach Pete Carroll in Las Vegas with the Raiders.Wilson, who has spent his entire career with the Seahawks, has been the subject of trade rumors in recent weeks. The Raiders, who are looking to upgrade at the quarterback position, are reportedly interested in acquiring Wilson to lead their offense.

Raiders free agency 2025: Buccaneers fits for John Spytek
Now that John Spytek is set as the new general manager of the Las Vegas Raiders, he is next focused on NFL free agency.
Like many GM’s who go to a new team, Spytek may targets from players from his former team, which, of course, was the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Spytek was with the Buccaneers since 2016 and was the assistant general manager the past two years.
Let’s look at some players who were with Spytek in Tampa Bay who could fit the Raiders in free agency:
Wide receiver Chris Godwin:
This is someone to watch. Even though he is coming off a season-ending ankle injury, Godwin is one of the top players available at his position. He could be a good fit with Jakobi Meyers as a starting wide receiver. Both players have excellent drop rates and could be a good pair. Also, Raiders’ part owner Tom Brady played with Godwin and thinks highly of him.
Cornerback Carlton Davis:
The Buccaneers traded Davis to the Detroit L:ions last year. The Raiders could use a veteran presence like Davis in their secondary.
Linebacker Lavonte David:
David is probably a Buccaneer life, but surely Spytek and Brady would love to see him in the Silver and Black. He is slowing down as he’s entering his 14th NFL season, but he would be of value to the Raiders.
Guard Ben Bredeson:
He started every game for the Buccaneers in his only season there. The Raiders could look for help at the position and Bredeson could be a nice, affordable addition.
Linebacker Joe Tyron-Shoyinka:
He’s a solid pass-rusher who has 15 sacks in four seasons. he could be a decent rotational addition.
Quarterback Kyle Trask:
He was a second-round pick in 2021. He’s played very little, but Spytek could look to bring him in as a backup.
Linebacker K.J. Britt:
He started 11 games and had 72 tackles in 2024.
Linebacker Anthony Nelson:
He’s a solid rotational player who has a nose for the ball.

Pete Carroll named Head Coach of the Las Vegas Raiders
HENDERSON, Nev. – Pete Carroll has been named Head Coach of the Las Vegas Raiders.
Carroll enters his 31st season in the NFL, most recently spending 14 seasons as the Executive V.P. and Head Coach of the Seattle Seahawks. During his 14-year tenure in Seattle, Carroll posted 10-plus wins in eight seasons, won five NFC West Division titles, reached the postseason 10 times, advanced to the divisional round seven times, won two NFC Championships and one Super Bowl. Under his guidance, the Seahawks led the NFL in scoring defense for four-consecutive seasons from 2012-15, becoming the first defense in the Super Bowl era to accomplish the feat. He also saw Seattle’s offense finish top five in the NFL in rushing yards six times (2012-15, 2018, 2019) and was named to the NFL 2010s All-Decade Team.
From 2012-15, the Seahawks went 46-18 in the regular season, the third-best regular season winning percentage (.719) during that span, while the team’s seven playoff wins were the most over that span. In 2013, Carroll led Seattle to its first Super Bowl title in franchise history with a 43-8 victory over the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII after a franchise-best 13-3 regular season record, joining Jimmy Johnson and Barry Switzer as the only coaches to win a college football national title and a Super Bowl in their career. The Seahawks defense ranked first overall in the NFL in total defense (273.6 ypg), passing defense (172.0 ypg), points allowed (14.4 ppg), takeaways (39), interceptions (28), turnover differential (+20) and opponent quarterback rating (63.4).
Carroll returned to the NFL after spending nine years (2001-09) as head coach at USC, where he won seven consecutive Pac-10 titles (2002-08), two national championships (2003-04) and led the Trojans to a 97-19 record. From 2002-08, his teams appeared in an NCAA record seven consecutive BCS bowls, recorded at least 11 victories seven times and finished ranked in the AP Top 4 seven times. Under Carroll, USC was the first school to have three Heisman Trophy winners in a four-year span (QB Carson Palmer, QB Matt Leinart, RB Reggie Bush). Carroll produced 34 All-American first-teamers and 53 NFL draft picks (including 14 first rounders, with a No. 1 selection in Palmer and a No. 2 in Bush).
He began his NFL career as defensive backs coach for Buffalo (1984) and Minnesota (1985-89) before becoming the New York Jets defensive coordinator (1990-93) and head coach (1994). He spent two years as San Francisco’s defensive coordinator (1995-96), leading the league in total defense in 1995, before leading New England to a 27-21 record and two playoff appearances as head coach (1997-99).
Carroll began his coaching career at the collegiate level, serving as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, Pacific, for three years (1974-76), working with the wide receivers and secondary. He then spent one season as a graduate assistant working with the secondary at Arkansas (1977) under Lou Holtz as the Razorbacks won the 1978 Orange Bowl. He had stints as a secondary coach at Iowa State (1978) and Ohio State (1979) before spending three seasons (1980-82) as the defensive coordinator and secondary coach at North Carolina State. He then returned to Pacific in 1983 as the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator.
Carroll was a two-time (1971-72) All-Pacific Coast Conference free safety at Pacific and earned his bachelor’s degree in 1973 in business administration. He received his secondary teaching credential and a master’s degree in physical education from Pacific in 1976. He was inducted into the Pacific Athletic Hall of Fame in 1995. In May of 2022, Carroll received an honorary doctorate degree from the university.
Carroll authored a New York Times bestseller book, entitled Win Forever: Live, Work, and Play Like a Champion, in 2011.
He was a three-sport (football, basketball and baseball) standout at Redwood High in Larkspur, Calif., earning the school’s Athlete of the Year award as a senior. He played quarterback, wide receiver and defensive back. He was inducted into the inaugural Redwood High Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009. He then played football at Marin Junior College in Kentfield, Calif., from 1969-70 before transferring to Pacific. Carroll was born on September 15 in San Francisco. He and his wife, Glena, have three children and eight grandchildren.

Ziegler was an advisor for the Saints this past season, but now he has a new official home with the Titans, where he will serve as an assistant general manager to Borgonzi.
Together, Borgonzi and Ziegler will help rebuild the Titans in order to get them back to the top of the heap in the hierarchy of the NFL.
