  • In Iowa’s farm country, small towns rally around a native son in football’s biggest game

ODEBOLT, Iowa (AP) — In the farm town where Cooper DeJean drew up football plays in elementary school and taught classmates to run them at recess, residents plan a huge party to watch the town’s native son in the Super Bowl.

The Philadelphia Eagles defensive back has lifted spirits in Odebolt, Iowa, a town of 920 people once known as the Popcorn Capital of the World.

Residents say he’s also inspired children in the four towns that make up the local school district in this remote region of Western Iowa, where he played quarterback in stadiums carved out of cornfields.

“People want to root for him because of how he carries himself,” said Larry Allen, who was DeJean’s high school football coach.

“Cooper is so unassuming, and he doesn’t talk about himself, he doesn’t showcase himself. He’s a very humble young man, and he did most of his talking on the field of play.”

On Sunday fans will gather in the Odebolt Community Building for a Super Bowl watch party they’re calling the “Cooper Bowl.” Many plan to wear special Eagles green T-shirts printed up for the occasion that feature DeJean’s No. 33. It’s also a birthday party for DeJean, who turns 22 on Super Bowl Sunday.

“The whole town is just ecstatic,” said Cory Duff, who owns The Bolt Drive-In, a local restaurant.

“I would say it has brought a renewed energy back to the community,” he said. “It has definitely uplifted everybody around here.”

Duff said he’s a die-hard Denver Broncos fan “and I even bought his jersey.”

“Everybody around here has their own team, but whenever the Eagles are playing, everyone’s watching,” Duff said.

DeJean’s father, Jason, said he was touched by a video that school employees made featuring dozens of children and teachers wishing his son the best in the Super Bowl.

“They all got on the playground and spelled out ‘Cooper,’” Jason DeJean said. The nearly 5-minute video is infused with cuteness, with one scene showing elementary school students making hand motions to imitate birds as they sing the team’s fight song, “Fly Eagles Fly.”

Ever since DeJean began flying around the football field at the University of Iowa, “the support around this community has been just crazy,” Jason DeJean said. “Now you see Eagle jerseys and 33 and all that stuff. It’s great to see, and you couldn’t ask for any more support than what this community gives.”

After winning back-to-back state football championships in his final two years of high school, DeJean went on to a stellar career at the University of Iowa where he was named an All-American. In the 2024 NFL draft, the Eagles selected him in the second round.

Only a handful of athletes from the small towns of the Western Valley Activities Conference go on to compete in any sport at a major university, making DeJean’s path from Odebolt to the Iowa Hawkeyes and now the Philadelphia Eagles one of the most improbable ever taken in this part of Western Iowa.

“It’s not very often a kid from a town of less than 1,000 people gets to go to the Super Bowl,” Duff said.

DeJean’s intense work ethic is a common thread that ties him to legendary athletes from other parts of the state such as former Iowa Hawkeye and WNBA star Caitlin Clark, from West Des Moines, and Pro Football Hall of Famer Kurt Warner, from Burlington, who played in high school in Cedar Rapids.

DeJean’s path to the Super Bowl has cast a spotlight on Odebolt, but it was the dirt he played on that helped put the town and its surrounding farmland on the map.

A two-lane highway winds down from the Loess Hills on Iowa’s western edge, past giant wind turbines and fields of corn and soybeans to get to Odebolt.

A 20-mile (32-kilometer) stretch of the road, Iowa Highway 175, connects the towns that send students to DeJean’s old high school: Battle Creek, Ida Grove, Odebolt and blink-and-you-miss-it Arthur, population 222.

In this wide-open area, farm animals outnumber people by a wide margin. The county that includes Odebolt is home to about 46,000 cattle — more than four times the human population of 9,800, according to numbers from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The rich, black soil surrounding Odebolt was seen as ideal for growing popcorn and led Chicago’s Cracker Jack Co. to choose it to supply the popcorn for its Cracker Jack snacks.

Cracker Jack Co. Executive Vice President E.R. Shields praised Odebolt’s early pioneers, who created the town from wilderness. And their descendants were “shining examples of strength, fortitude and foresight that has made your community ‘The Popcorn Center of the World,’” he wrote in 1938 in the Odebolt Chronicle.

Residents who know DeJean say they see that same strength and fortitude in him. They speak highly of his work ethic in sports, but also his personality traits in life.

“The kid is insanely humble, and he’s not going to forget where he comes from,” Duff said.

In Iowa’s farm country, small towns rally around a native son in football’s biggest game

In the heart of Iowa’s farm country, where the fields stretch for miles and the sense of community runs deep, there is a buzz in the air. The reason? One of their own is about to take center stage in football’s biggest game.

Growing up in a small town in Iowa, Jake Johnson was always a standout athlete. From a young age, he showed promise on the football field and his talent only continued to grow as he got older. Now, after years of hard work and dedication, Jake finds himself on the brink of playing in the Super Bowl.

As news of Jake’s success spreads throughout the tight-knit communities of Iowa, there is an overwhelming sense of pride and excitement. From the local diner to the corner gas station, everyone is talking about Jake and the incredible journey he has been on.

In the days leading up to the big game, signs and banners declaring support for Jake can be seen lining the streets of his hometown. The local high school even holds a pep rally in his honor, with students and faculty alike coming together to show their support.

On game day, the entire town gathers around their televisions, cheering on Jake as he takes the field. And when he scores the game-winning touchdown, the cheers can be heard for miles around.

In Iowa’s farm country, where community is everything, the success of one of their own is a cause for celebration. And as Jake hoists the championship trophy high above his head, the pride of his hometown shines through brighter than ever.

  • Palantir Earnings to Test Stock’s Soaring Valuation After Rally

(Bloomberg) — Palantir Technologies Inc.’s hefty premium will be in focus when the data analysis software giant reports earnings after the market close on Monday — with the stock trading at levels some see as difficult to maintain.

    Most Read from Bloomberg

Rebounding from a slump at the start of the year, the stock on Friday powered to a fresh record high, pushing its valuation to nearly 170 times forward earnings — more than 500% greater than that of the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100.

With Palantir’s ability to keep delivering significant growth seen threatened by rising competition and a weaker outlook in Europe, scrutiny is on earnings. The firm would have to accelerate growth by 50% for four years to hold its stock price, Jefferies analysts led by Brent Thill wrote in a Jan. 30 note.

“With Palantir trading at a significant premium to its peers, we believe any signs of decelerating growth could cause concern and subsequently lead to multiple compression,” Thill said. Palantir shares pared an earlier loss to climb about 1% higher in afternoon trading in New York.

Analysts see more than 30% downside for the stock over the next 12 months, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Around its earnings, the implied one-day move for shares is more than 13% in either direction, according to Bloomberg. Wall Street expects the company to report GAAP earnings per share of 3 cents, a decline from the year before, and $776 million in revenue, a 28% jump from the year prior.

Bloomberg Intelligence analysts also see possible hurdles to Palantir’s growth. Momentum from US government contracts and its artificial intelligence platform could get weighed down by competition and softness in its international business, according to analysts led by Mandeep Singh.

Another issue for investors is insider sales — of which Palantir had the most of any S&P 500 Index company in the past three months, data compiled by Bloomberg show.

Palantir insiders sold about $4 billion in shares in 2024, a record, according to data from the Washington Service, with most sales taking place from September through the end of the year. While that makes up a relatively small portion of the company’s roughly $190 billion market value, who is selling is also important — the list includes early investors Peter Thiel and Chief Executive Officer and Founder Alex Karp.

Palantir Technologies Inc. is set to report its earnings for the fourth quarter, with investors eagerly awaiting the results to see if the software company can justify its soaring valuation after a recent rally.

Palantir, known for its data analytics and software solutions for government and commercial clients, has seen its stock price surge in recent months, with shares up over 200% in the past year. The company’s market capitalization now stands at over $50 billion, making it one of the most valuable software companies in the world.

Investors will be looking for signs of continued growth and profitability in Palantir’s earnings report, as well as updates on the company’s outlook for the future. Analysts expect the company to report strong revenue and earnings growth, driven by increasing demand for its products and services.

However, some analysts have raised concerns about Palantir’s valuation, noting that the stock may be overvalued compared to its peers. The company’s high price-to-earnings ratio and relatively small revenue base have led some to question whether the stock can sustain its current levels.

Palantir’s earnings report will be a key test for the company and its investors, as they gauge whether the company’s fundamentals can support its lofty valuation. Stay tuned for updates on Palantir’s earnings and the market’s reaction to the results.

  • Thousands of protesters rally in downtown Los Angeles against Trump’s aggressive immigration policies

Thousands of protesters rallied in downtown Los Angeles on Sunday against President Trump’s crack down on immigration and his aggressive deportation policies.

Draped in Mexican and Salvadoran and flags, demonstrators gathered near City Hall shortly before noon, blocking traffic at Spring and Temple streets, amid honking horns and solidarity messages from passing motorists. Protesters blasted a mix of traditional and contemporary Mexican music from a loudspeaker, including “Por mi Mexico” by Lefty Sm & Santa Fe Klan.

By 1 p.m., the number of protesters ballooned to several thousand, with some carrying signs that said, “MAGA – Mexicans always get across,” “Don’t bite the hand that feeds you,” referring to the state’s agricultural workers, and, “I drink my horchata warm because f … I.C.E,” a reference to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency.

Nailah Esparza, 18, said it was her first protest and that she learned about it roughly a week ago from TikTok videos. She held a sign in Spanish that read, “ No more I.C.E. raids, no more fear, we want justice and a better world.”

“I decided it was actually something that was very important, so we decided to show support, because of the youth,” said Esparza, who is Mexican American. “We’re very passionate about what we’re here for.”

Another protester, who identified himself only as Rey out of privacy concerns, brought a sign that read, “Trump eat caca. Beware the Nazis.” He said he protested Trump’s immigration policies during his first term as president.

“We thought we were done with his administration,” said Rey, who is Mexican American. “And now we have to do this again.”

The protest was mostly peaceful, but things appeared to ratchet up when the driver of a silver Mustang began doing donuts in the intersection. Soon after, police arrived on the scene as some protesters walked onto the nearby 101 Freeway, while hundreds more crowded overpasses, waving flags and holding signs.

Promising the largest deportation effort in U.S. history, President Trump, in his first days in office, declared a “national emergency” at the southern border, deploying troops there and releasing a dramatic series of executive orders and other policy changes intended to reshape the country’s immigration system.

Trump’s orders sharply limit legal pathways for entering the U.S., bolster enforcement efforts to seal off the U.S.-Mexico border, and promote aggressive sweeps to round up and deport people living in the U.S. illegally. Some of the orders have already been challenged in court, and advocates said others could be soon.

There are an estimated 11 million to 15 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S., including more than 2 million in California.

That includes people who crossed the border illegally, people who overstayed their visas and people who have requested asylum. It does not include people who entered the country under various temporary humanitarian programs, or who have obtained Temporary Protected Status, which gives people the right to live and work in the U.S. temporarily because of disasters or strife in their home countries.

Times reporters Jessica Garrison and Rebecca Plevin contributed to this report.

On [date], thousands of protesters gathered in downtown Los Angeles to demonstrate against President Trump’s aggressive immigration policies. The crowd, made up of activists, community leaders, and concerned citizens, marched through the streets carrying signs and chanting slogans in support of immigrants and refugees.

Many protesters voiced their opposition to the administration’s policies, which have included separating families at the border, implementing travel bans on majority-Muslim countries, and increasing deportations of undocumented immigrants. They called for humane and compassionate immigration reform that respects the rights and dignity of all individuals.

The rally, organized by [name of organization], drew a diverse crowd of people from all walks of life who came together to show solidarity with immigrant communities. Speakers at the event highlighted the contributions that immigrants make to society and called for an end to the demonization and scapegoating of immigrants.

As the sun set over downtown Los Angeles, the protesters remained united in their message of unity and justice for all. The rally served as a powerful reminder that the fight for immigrant rights is far from over, and that the voices of the people will continue to be heard until real change is achieved.

  • Recap: Denver Nuggets get up big and then survive rally from Charlotte Hornets for 107-104 victory

The Denver Nuggets were looking to finish out their five game road trip on a high note tonight. After getting a victory last night, the Nuggets backed it up with another “W” against the Charlotte Hornets. Denver made it more interesting than it needed to be after they squandered a big lead in the second half to fall behind by four points with less than a minute to play. Nikola Jokic willed them to victory once again to cap off another big night for him and another triple double. It wasn’t exactly pretty, but the Nuggets win another one on a back to back, final score 107-104.

Neither team could make many shots to open the game. The score was still 2-2 at the nine and a half minute mark. Jokic got some easy buckets and also buried a three to build a Denver lead. There wasn’t much offense outside of Nikola though which kept the lead from growing a ton. Charlotte was still shooting a horrid percentage from the floor so Denver stayed in front. Zeke Nnaji made an early appearance as one of the first guys off the bench and Jalen Pickett followed shortly after. Denver went cold from the floor while Charlotte remained cold. Both teams started working for free throws and the Nuggets had more success to close the quarter. After one they led 27-20.

The Nuggets bench unit had to battle for points with Christian Braun doing most of the battling. They also kept the Hornets off the scoreboard and pushed the lead into double digits. The reserve group kept playing hard and kept growing their advantage. That led to an extended 20-8 run for Denver and a double digit lead when Jokic came back in. Charlotte responded and the Nuggets suddenly couldn’t buy a basket. The Hornets went on a 9-0 run and got back within three before Denver finally got a couple buckets in the final moments of the half. They went to the locker room leading 54-46.

The Nuggets exerted their will to open the second half and easily pushed the lead back above a dozen. Jamal Murray had a quiet first half but led the Nuggets offense early in the third quarter. They slowed down after that but Charlotte continued to miss shots, other than Nick Smith Jr. He was hitting threes but it seemed like every time he got one the Nuggets had an answer. Still, the Hornets weren’t going to just go away. They went on a run down the stretch of the third to get back within eight. Denver was able to stop Charlotte there but a sloppy final minute let the Hornets cut into the lead again and the third ended with the Nuggets up 90-81.

The bench unit struggled to score to start the fourth quarter and the Hornets closed in. Nnaji had some solid minutes getting a couple easy baskets and piling up blocks. Charlotte wouldn’t give in and other than Nnaji no one could score, literally. Eventually the compelte lack of offense allowed the Hornets to push all the way back and tie the game at 94. Jokic settled Denver down and helped get a couple buckets but Miles Bridges was attacking on the other end. The game stayed tied going into the final two minutes of the game. Bridges got a bucket to give Charlotte their first lead since 2-0 and then hit another to put the Hornets up four. Jokic responded with an and-one and then the Hornets inexplicably fouled him in the back court with 18 seconds left. He sunk them both and then fed Murray for a fastbreak layup off a miss to put Denver up 107-104. The Hornets couldn’t get a buzzer beater three and Denver survives to win.

The Denver Nuggets came out strong against the Charlotte Hornets, building a big lead early in the game. However, the Hornets made a strong comeback in the second half, putting pressure on the Nuggets to hold onto their lead.

Despite the Hornets’ rally, the Nuggets managed to hang on for a 107-104 victory. Nikola Jokic led the way for Denver with a near triple-double, scoring 19 points, grabbing 11 rebounds, and dishing out 8 assists.

The Nuggets’ defense also played a key role in securing the win, forcing the Hornets into tough shots and turnovers down the stretch. Overall, it was a hard-fought victory for Denver as they continue to climb the standings in the Western Conference.

Next up, the Nuggets will look to carry this momentum into their next game and continue their winning streak. Keep an eye on this team as they look to make a push in the playoffs.

  • Dan Scarr issues rally cry ahead of Wrexham vs Stevenage as Red Dragons face huge February challenge

After returning to the starting lineup last week, Dan Scarr has now called on his Wrexham teammates to step up a gear and finish January on a high with a win against Stevenage.

Last time out, Wrexham earned a point in a 1-1 draw with league leaders Birmingham, though many Red Dragons fans believe they should have taken all three.

Dan Scarr made his first appearance for Phil Parkinson’s side since November after a battle with fitness and form, and is now looking ahead to more outings.

With the Wrexham vs Stevenage game coming up tonight, Scarr is under no illusions that his team need to get all three points, as they go into a tricky period next month.

Wrexham need to end January on a high at home

Speaking to The Leader ahead of the Stevenage game, Scarr reflected on a solid performance against Birmingham, and insisted the Wrexham squad now need to build on that when they face Stevenage.

“We were disappointed not to get the three points against Birmingham but if we can back it up on Tuesday at home, it’s a great result,” he said. “How we played second half, if we kick on and play like that, especially in the next few games, I don’t think teams will live with us and we can get some good points on the board.”

This game against Stevenage will be the last time Wrexham play at the Racecourse Ground until March, and Scarr claims the team must use that as motivation.

He added: “We need to build on that point, hopefully win this home game against Stevenage and then that puts us in a good position leading into these away games.”

February will be massive challenge for Wrexham with non-stop away games

It will be interesting to see what lineup Parkinson goes with against Stevenage, considering the hectic and difficult schedule ahead in February.

Away league games are to come against Crawley, Northampton, and Mansfield, with the rescheduled EFL Trophy tie against Port Vale sandwiched in between.

Given the league positions of those three opponents in League One — 12th placed Mansfield are currently the highest-placed opposition for Wrexham in February — you would hope the Red Dragons can get the results they need to keep up their title charge.

However, Wrexham’s poor away form has been a real concern this season, and it could potentially see their season derailed next month if improvements are not made.

    Related Topics

As Wrexham AFC prepares to take on Stevenage in a crucial February showdown, defender Dan Scarr has issued a rallying cry to his teammates and fans alike. The Red Dragons are facing a tough month ahead with several key fixtures that could have a big impact on their promotion hopes.

Scarr, who has been a key player for Wrexham this season, emphasized the importance of staying focused and united as they face this challenging period. He urged his teammates to give their all on the pitch and to approach each game with determination and confidence.

With the support of the fans behind them, Scarr believes that Wrexham can rise to the occasion and come out on top in the upcoming matches. The team will need to be at their best to overcome the tough opposition they will face in February, but Scarr is confident that they have what it takes to succeed.

As Wrexham prepares for their clash against Stevenage, all eyes will be on the Red Dragons as they look to kick off the month with a strong performance. With Scarr leading the charge, Wrexham will be looking to make a statement and continue their push for promotion.

  • ‘We’re here, we’re queer, and we’re going to be heard’: Activists rally as Idaho lawmakers seek to challenge same-sex marriage ruling

LGBTQ+ rights advocates protested at the Idaho State Capitol after lawmakers approved a memorial calling for the reversal of federal same-sex marriage protections.

BOISE, Idaho — Dozens of LGBTQ+ rights advocates rallied at the Idaho State Capitol Sunday to protest a legislative petition that calls on the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn its landmark same-sex marriage ruling.

The demonstration came four days after the House State Affairs Committee approved a memorial asking the high court to reverse its 2015 Obergefell v. Hodges decision, which legalized same-sex marriage nationwide.

“One day, I want to marry someone that I love just as much as my counterparts,” said one of the rally organizers, Cole Lancaster.

Lancaster said his dreams of marriage feel increasingly threatened in his home state.

State lawmakers backing the memorial argue that marriage regulations should be determined at the state level rather than by federal mandate.

“I don’t think marriage is a fundamental right,” said Heather Scott, the petition’s sponsor. “It’s not the federal government’s job to figure out what’s going on in Idaho.”

Scott said the goal isn’t to take away rights but rather to transfer conversations like same-sex marriage to the state level so Idaho lawmakers can decide for themselves.

“What we’re encouraging is that these discussions happen within the state, with our local people, instead of through the federal government,” Scott said.

But protesters expressed deep skepticism about putting their marriage rights in the hands of state legislators. Many wrote letters to lawmakers explaining what their marriages and equal rights meant to them personally.

“Our marriages don’t affect anyone else,” Lancaster said. “We’re here, we’re queer, and we’re going to be heard, and we’re not going anywhere.”

Protesters vowed to continue fighting against the memorial and any other attempts to roll back marriage equality.

“We’re telling people in the Capitol building that we don’t want this initiative to continue any further,” Lancaster said.

In a recent move that has sparked outrage among the LGBTQ+ community, lawmakers in Idaho have introduced a bill that aims to challenge the legality of same-sex marriage in the state. In response, activists have come together to rally under the banner of “We’re here, we’re queer, and we’re going to be heard.”

The proposed bill, known as HB 396, seeks to nullify the 2014 federal court ruling that legalized same-sex marriage in Idaho. This move has been met with fierce opposition from advocates of LGBTQ+ rights, who see it as a blatant attack on the progress that has been made in achieving marriage equality.

“We will not stand idly by while our hard-fought rights are threatened,” said one activist at the rally. “We have come too far to allow discriminatory legislation to turn back the clock on marriage equality.”

The rally, which drew a large crowd of supporters, featured speeches from community leaders, allies, and individuals directly impacted by the potential repeal of same-sex marriage rights. Chants of “Love is love” and “Equality for all” echoed through the streets as demonstrators made their voices heard.

As the fight for LGBTQ+ rights continues, activists are determined to stand firm in their commitment to equality and justice. “We will not be silenced,” declared one speaker. “We will continue to fight for our rights, our love, and our families. We’re here, we’re queer, and we’re going to be heard.”
