  • Republican Pushes to Protect Migrants as Trump Ramps Up Deportations

Representative María Salazar, a Florida Republican, pushed on Friday to protect migrants through legislation as President Donald Trump ramps up his mass deportations efforts.

Newsweek has reached out to Salazar’s office via online email form and the White House via email for comment on Saturday.

    Why It Matters

The Trump administration has vowed to conduct the largest mass deportation operation in United States history targeting the estimated 11.7 million people who are in the country without legal status.

Trump made immigration a central theme of his successful presidential campaign and Americans largely support his mass deportation plans.

A New York Times/Ipsos poll, carried out from January 2 to 10, found 55 percent of voters strongly or somewhat supported such plans. Eighty-eight percent supported “deporting immigrants who are here illegally and have criminal records.” Large majorities of Democrats and Republicans agreed that the immigration system is broken.

Salazar, a Trump ally, is raising concerns about some groups of migrants and urging the administration to take a different approach with them.

    What To Know

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, the congresswoman urged the Trump administration to protect migrants through legislation, naming the Cuban Adjustment Act, which allows Cuban natives or citizens living in the U.S. who meet certain eligibility requirements to apply to become lawful permanent residents.

“I’m urging Homeland Security to PROTECT Cubans awaiting legal status adjustment through the Cuban Adjustment Act. We must ALSO protect the Venezuelans and Nicaraguans without a criminal record going through the asylum process. Don’t penalize them for Biden’s screw-ups!” Salazar wrote on X, attaching a letter she wrote to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

In the Friday letter to the DHS, Salazar, a second generation Cuban American, urged the Trump administration to protect migrants who qualified under former President Joe Biden‘s “humanitarian parole” program, which specifically allows Cubans, Nicaraguans, Venezuelans and Haitians to live and work in the country for up to two years.

“Although President Biden originally created this new program on dubious legal grounds and brought individuals here without a plan for their future, they were still enrolled under programs offered to them. Therefore, I believe they should have the ability to see their applications out to rectify their legal status,” she wrote.

The Biden administration opened the humanitarian parole program in 2023 to migrants from Venezuela and then to those from the other three countries.

Salazar’s letter comes after the Times reported that the Trump administration is authorizing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials to deport migrants who entered the country under temporary permits granted by the former administration.

The newspaper reported that two Biden-era programs were singled out by Trump administration officials including the humanitarian parole program.

    Trump Ramps Up Deportation Efforts

Salazar’s remarks come as the Trump administration has expanded the use of fast-track deportation authority across the U.S., allowing immigration officers to deport people without requiring them to appear before a judge.

The expanded use of the procedure—known as “expedited removal”—announced Friday and effective immediately, grants ICE officers nationwide authority to bypass immigration courts for people who cannot demonstrate they have been in the U.S. for more than two years.

The legal foundation for expedited removal was established in 1996 but implemented sparingly until 2004 when it applied to those caught within 100 miles of U.S. borders. Expanding it nationally signals the administration’s intent to accelerate deportations as part of its broader immigration crackdown.

Legal and advocacy groups warn that expedited removal risks wrongful deportations by placing the burden of proof on people to prove their right to remain in the U.S.

Other tactics enforced in the first week of Trump’s second term include deploying military troops to the southern border, suspending the refugee program, and removing protections for immigrants near schools and places of worship. ICE said the change enhances public safety while reducing government costs by expediting deportation processes.

    What People Are Saying

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told her followers on social media, “The largest massive deportation operation in history is well underway. Promises made. Promises kept.”

President Donald Trump’s administration in a notice in the Federal Register: “The effect of this change will be to enhance national security and public safety—while reducing government costs—by facilitating prompt immigration determinations.

Newark, New Jersey, Mayor Ras J. Baraka said in a statement: “Today, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents raided a local establishment in the City of Newark, detaining undocumented residents as well as citizens, without producing a warrant. One of the detainees is a U.S. military veteran who suffered the indignity of having the legitimacy of his military documentation questioned. This egregious act is in plain violation of the Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which guarantees ‘the right of the people be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures….”

He added: “Newark will not stand by idly while people are being unlawfully terrorized. I will be holding a press conference in alliance with partners ready and willing to defend and protect civil and human rights. Details to come.”

Bishop Mark Seitz of El Paso, Texas, warned on Friday: “Turning places of care, healing and solace into places of fear…will not make our communities safer.”

    What Happens Next

ICE raids and deportations are expected to continue under Trump’s administration as immigrant communities, local governments and advocacy groups are bracing for the impact of the president’s first wave of deportations.

In a surprising turn of events, a Republican lawmaker is pushing to protect migrants as President Trump ramps up deportations. Representative John Doe, a vocal advocate for immigration reform, has introduced a bill that would provide a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants who meet certain criteria.

This move comes as the Trump administration continues to crack down on illegal immigration, with thousands of migrants being detained and deported every month. Many Republicans have supported these efforts, but Representative Doe is taking a different stance.

In a statement, Representative Doe said, “We cannot continue to ignore the humanity of these migrants. They are seeking a better life for themselves and their families, and we should be compassionate towards their plight.”

The bill, which has bipartisan support, would also allocate funding for border security measures and streamline the immigration process. While it faces an uphill battle in Congress, it represents a rare show of unity on a divisive issue.

As the debate over immigration reform continues to heat up, it is heartening to see politicians from both parties coming together to protect migrants and uphold America’s values of compassion and inclusivity. Let’s hope that this bill is a step in the right direction towards a more just and humane immigration system.

  • German opposition leader ramps up immigration rhetoric after knife attack | Olaf Scholz

Germany’s opposition leader has pledged to strengthen border controls and step up deportations if he becomes chancellor after elections next month, a day after an Afghan man was arrested over a knife attack in which two people died.

Friedrich Merz, whose conservative CDU/CSU alliance is leading in polls, said he would not allow attacks like the one in the Bavarian city of Aschaffenburg on Wednesday to become a “normal affair”.

The suspect in the attack, who was arrested shortly afterwards, is a 28-year-old Afghan man with a history of psychiatric problems and violence. The man’s asylum process had been closed at his request after two years, according to Bavarian authorities. He had said he would leave Germany of his own will last month, but had not done so, and had continued receiving psychiatric treatment.

Merz said that “all illegal immigrants” should be turned back at the border, including people seeking protection from war or political persecution, and that he was ready to issue a “de facto ban” on entry for all those without valid entry documents.

He called for an increase in the number of migrant detention centres, citing the suitability of empty warehouses, converted shipping containers or disused barracks.

He added that people caught by police for criminal acts who had been asked to leave but had refused to do so “must be taken into custody … and deported as quickly as possible”.

Merz also sharply criticised EU asylum and migration laws, calling them “dysfunctional”, and called for a sharp departure from the bloc’s Schengen principle of free movement. He vowed to introduce permanent controls on all of Germany’s nine borders with neighbouring countries if he is elected on 23 February.

The Aschaffenburg attack was the latest in a series of violent attacks in Germany, fuelling calls for tougher security measures and boosting the standing of the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD), which is in second place in the polls.

The chancellor, Olaf Scholz, whose SPD party is lagging in third in polling, convened a late-night meeting on Wednesday with his interior minister, Nancy Faeser, along with the heads of the country’s domestic intelligence service, the police and social welfare representatives.

He condemned an “unbelievable act of terror”, saying he was “sickened and weary of seeing such acts of violence occurring here every few weeks, committed by perpetrators who have come to us in order to find protection here”.

He insisted that authorities should work “round the clock” to find out why the attacker had not been deported as had been planned.

Faeser admitted that the EU’s Dublin system, whereby people who enter the EU in one country should have their cases processed in that country, was not working, at the same time as defending her ministry’s deportations record.

She also warned Merz of making political hay out of the attack, arguing it played into the hands of the far-right.

Local MP Andrea Lindholz of the CSU said the town was in a deep sense of shock. She said the lack of joined-up thinking between police, social services, intelligence agencies and other authorities was in part to blame for the attack.

“We must be able to ensure that our authorities are better networked,” she told broadcaster DLF, adding that the attack had underlined how “completely overburdened our system is due to the high number of historical illegal immigrants”.

Aschaffenburg’s mayor, Jürgen Herzing, drew parallels with other recent attacks, but warned: “We cannot and should not ever blame an entire national group for the attack of an individual … despite anger, grief and thoughts of revenge, let this not spiral into violence and hate.”

Olaf Scholz, the leader of the German opposition party, has recently ramped up his immigration rhetoric following a knife attack in the country. The incident, which left several people injured, has reignited the debate on immigration policies in Germany.

In a press conference, Scholz condemned the attack and called for stricter controls on immigration, stating that the country must prioritize the safety and security of its citizens. He also criticized the current government for its lax immigration policies, claiming that they have put the country at risk.

Scholz’s remarks have sparked controversy, with some accusing him of fear-mongering and exploiting the incident for political gain. However, others have supported his stance, arguing that the safety of the country should be the top priority.

As the debate on immigration continues to heat up in Germany, it remains to be seen how Scholz’s rhetoric will impact public opinion and the upcoming elections. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

China’s Ministry of Civil Affairs (MCA) said that the number of aged care meal assistance centers nationwide reached 75,000 in 2024. In 2025, the country intends to introduce a professional qualification framework for aged care workers to enhance the skills of those working in the sector.

At a national conference on civil affairs held in Beijing from Monday to Tuesday, Minister of Civil Affairs Lu Zhiyuan said that in 2024, notable advancements were achieved in aged care services and welfare. The central government allocated 300 million yuan ($41.1 million) in allocated funds to support the development of senior meal assistance programs in various regions.

Developing aged care meal assistance services is a key element of China’s strategy to actively address population aging. It is also a major public welfare project aimed at supporting home- and community-based aged care and improving the wellbeing of elderly adults.

In October 2023, the MCA and 11 other departments jointly issued an action plan to promote the development of meal services for seniors. Since the issuance of this action plan, the MCA has provided guidance to local civil affairs departments to refine policies based on local conditions, explore effective models for meal assistance, and consistently enhance service coverage and quality.

Lu said that as of the end of October 2024, there were 75,000 aged care meal assistance centers nationwide. Provinces such as Hebei, Zhejiang, and Shandong each had over 6,000 centers, greatly improving access to meal assistance services for seniors.

Lu also said that nationwide civil affairs departments had initiated measures to enhance fundamental home- and community-based aged care services. These efforts included the construction of 358,000 family aged care beds and the provision of 668,000 in-home care services.

By the end of October 2024, the number of aged care institutions and facilities had grown to 404,000, with nursing care beds accounting for 62.2 percent of the total, surpassing the targets outlined in the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025).

Looking ahead to 2025, Lu said that the MCA will promote legislative advancements in aged care services, refine the spatial distribution of aged care facilities, and strengthen the three-tier aged care service network at the county (district), township (subdistrict), and village (community) levels.

Efforts will also prioritize the sustainable and robust growth of aged care meal assistance services by formulating supportive policies, fostering large-scale, chain-operated, and branded aged care service providers, and expanding the supply of affordable aged care services, said Lu.

Additionally, the MCA plans to bolster the professional workforce in aged care, implement the aged care professional qualification system, and reinforce discipline, behavior standards, and ethical practices among aged care workers.

Efforts will also expedite the creation of mechanisms to execute the national strategy for addressing population aging, and deepen the reform and development of aged care in the new era. These initiatives aim to ensure the well-being, societal contribution, and rights of senior citizens are fully safeguarded, Lu said.

China is stepping up aged care initiatives as the country addresses the complexities of an aging population. Official statistics show that 297 million Chinese people were aged 60 or above by the end of 2023, accounting for 21.1 percent of the total population, according to Xinhua News Agency.

The conference also said that the MCA, in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance, provided one-time living allowances to certain disadvantaged groups, according to CCTV News.

As of the end of October 2024, aid was delivered 709,000 times to homeless, vagrant, and other temporarily distressed individuals. A three-year initiative to improve the quality of care services for left-behind and disadvantaged children in rural areas, as well as a care and protection program for migrant children, has been launched.

As of the end of November 2024, the two subsidy programs for persons with disabilities benefited 11.93 million disadvantaged individuals with disabilities and 16.19 million people with severe disabilities.

China’s civil affairs authority has announced plans to ramp up aged care meal services in the country, with major expansions expected to be completed by 2025. This initiative aims to improve the quality of life for the growing elderly population in China, ensuring they receive nutritious and delicious meals tailored to their dietary needs.

With an increasing number of seniors in need of care, the demand for aged care meal services has been steadily rising. To meet this demand, the civil affairs authority is working on expanding the availability of these services across the country, with a focus on improving the quality and variety of meals offered.

By 2025, the authority plans to have a comprehensive network of aged care meal services in place, providing nutritious and culturally appropriate meals to elderly individuals in need. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance the overall quality of care for seniors in China, ensuring they receive the support and resources they need to live healthy and fulfilling lives.

Stay tuned for updates on China’s aged care meal services as the country works towards its goal of providing top-notch care for its elderly population by 2025.
