Toronto Raptors fans boo US national anthem after Donald Trump tariffs | NBA
Fans at a Toronto Raptors game on Sunday continued an emerging trend of booing the American national anthem at sporting events in Canada.
Fans of the NBA’s lone Canadian franchise booed the US anthem before the Raptors’ game against the Los Angeles Clippers at the Scotiabank Arena in downtown Toronto. Similar reactions broke out on Saturday night at NHL games in Ottawa and Calgary, where the Senators and Flames faced the Minnesota Wild and Detroit Red Wings respectively. Those games came hours after Donald Trump made his threat of import tariffs on Canada a reality.
After Raptors fans initially cheered the 15-year-old girl singing the anthems, they booed throughout her performance of The Star-Spangled Banner. At the end, mixed boos and cheers could be heard before the crowd erupted in applause for the Canadian anthem, O Canada. Three of the five starters on the Raptors are American and they glanced at each other as the boos rang out. Sportsnet reporter Michael Grange, who was at the game, wrote on X that fans emphasised the word “free” in the Canadian anthem.
On Saturday, Trump placed tariffs on goods from Canada, Mexico and China after claiming the three countries allow immigrants and illegal drugs into the US. In addition, energy imported from Canada, including oil, natural gas and electricity, will be taxed at a 10% rate.
Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau and Mexico’s president have ordered retaliatory tariffs on goods from America in response.
The booing of The Star-Spangled Banner in Canada is rare, but not unheard of especially when tied to world events. In the early 2000s, fans at games in Canada booed to show their disapproval of the US-led war in Iraq.
Trump has been the subject of booing himself at sports events. During his first term as president he was jeered and greeted with “lock him up” chants by Washington Nationals fans during the 2019 World Series. He has also been cheered loudly at college football games.
In a shocking turn of events, Toronto Raptors fans expressed their disapproval of the US national anthem by booing during the pre-game rendition. The protest comes in response to President Donald Trump’s recent announcement of imposing tariffs on Canadian goods, sparking tensions between the two countries. The Raptors fans, known for their passionate support of the team, made a bold statement by booing the national anthem before the game against the New York Knicks. Many fans held signs denouncing the tariffs and calling for peaceful resolutions between the US and Canada.
The protest highlights the impact of political decisions on sports and the unity of fans in standing up for what they believe in. The Raptors organization has yet to comment on the incident, but it is clear that the fans’ message was heard loud and clear.
As the NBA continues to be a platform for social activism, the Toronto Raptors fans have shown that they will not stay silent in the face of injustice. Time will tell how this protest will influence future games and the relationship between the US and Canada.

What to Know
The Clippers are 8-2 against the Raptors since December of 2019, and they’ll have a chance to extend that success on Sunday. The Los Angeles Clippers will be staying on the road to face off against the Toronto Raptors at 3:30 p.m. ET at Scotiabank Arena. The Clippers will be strutting in after a win while the Raptors will be stumbling in from a defeat.
Last Friday, the Clippers earned a 112-104 victory over the Hornets.
Norman Powell was the offensive standout of the match as he went 11 for 15 en route to 27 points plus two steals. What’s more, he also racked up four assists, the most he’s had since back in December of 2024.
Meanwhile, the Raptors unfortunately witnessed the end of their five-game winning streak on Friday. The game between them and the Bulls wasn’t a total blowout, but with the Raptors falling 122-106 at home it was darn close to turning into one. Toronto didn’t live up to their potential and found themselves falling short of the advantage oddsmakers thought they had coming into the game.
Los Angeles has been performing well recently as they’ve won four of their last five contests, which provided a nice bump to their 28-20 record this season. As for Toronto, their loss ended a four-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 15-33.
Going forward, the Clippers are the favorite in this one, as the experts expect to see them win by 5.5 points. This contest will be their sixth straight as the favorites (so far over this stretch they are 3-2 against the spread).
The Clippers skirted past the Raptors 105-103 when the teams last played back in November of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Clippers since the team won’t have the home-court advantage this time around. We’ll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
Odds
Los Angeles is a solid 5.5-point favorite against Toronto, according to the latest NBA odds.
The oddsmakers had a good feel for the line for this one, as the game opened with the Clippers as a 6.5-point favorite.
The over/under is 220.5 points.

TORONTO — Fans at a Toronto Raptors game Sunday continued an emerging trend of booing the American national anthem at pro sporting events in Canada.
Fans of the NBA’s lone Canadian franchise booed the anthem after similar reactions broke out Saturday night at NHL games in Ottawa, Ontario and Calgary, Alberta, hours after U.S. President Donald Trump made his threat of import tariffs on America’s northern neighbor a reality.
After initially cheering for the 15-year-old female singer, fans booed throughout “The Star-Spangled Banner” performance. At the end, mixed boos and cheers could be heard before the crowd erupted in applause for the Canadian anthem, “O Canada.”
Trump declared an economic emergency in order to place taxes of 25% on imports from Canada and Mexico and 10% on imports from China. Energy imported from Canada, including oil, natural gas and electricity, would be taxed at a 10% rate.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexico’s president ordered retaliatory tariffs on goods from America in response.
U.S. national anthem boos in Canada are rare, but not unheard of, especially when tied to world events. In the early 2000s, fans at games in Canada booed to show their disapproval of the U.S.-led war against Iraq.
The NHL’s Canucks will host the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday night in Vancouver, British Columbia.
The Toronto Raptors’ fan base has once again made headlines for their ongoing tradition of booing the U.S. national anthem when played before games held in Canada. This trend, which has been seen at several games in recent years, has sparked controversy and debate among fans and spectators alike. While some argue that the booing is a sign of disrespect towards the U.S. anthem and the country it represents, others see it as a form of protest against various political and social issues in America. The Raptors’ organization has stated that they do not condone the booing of any national anthem, but have also acknowledged the right of fans to express themselves.
Regardless of the reasons behind the booing, it is clear that this tradition has become a defining feature of Raptors games held in Canada. As the team continues to make waves in the NBA, it remains to be seen whether this trend will continue or if fans will find new ways to express their opinions and beliefs.

Raptors vs Clippers Prediction, Picks & Odds for Tonight’s NBA Game
Our Raptors vs. Clippers predictions expect a big game from Scottie Barnes against L.A.’s big men.
With their form on an upward curve, the Toronto Raptors tip off their February schedule against the Los Angeles Clippers this afternoon at Scotiabank Arena.
That means a reunion with their NBA championship hero Kawhi Leonard, but my Clippers vs. Raptors predictions focus on Toronto’s current superstar talent and his strong recent play.
Check out my top NBA picks and storylines for this February 2 matinee.
Raptors vs Clippers prediction
My Raptors pick
Scottie Barnes Over 7.5 rebounds (-125 at PointsBet Canada)My analysis
Scottie Barnes was the engine for the Toronto Raptors’ impressive end to January, as they strung together five straight wins before Friday’s loss to the Bulls. Today’s matchup against the Los Angeles Clippers is going to come down to the athleticism of Barnes and R.J. Barrett against the wily experience of James Harden and Kawhi Leonard. All of the Scottie Barnes odds have value, but I’m targeting his rebounds prop. He’s averaging 8.1 rebounds per game this season, and he’s been especially active in his past seven outings, with almost nine boards a game over that span, including a 10-rebound effort against the Bulls. Consistency is the key for Barnes to take the next step, and the Raptors have to be thrilled with the recent signs.
Toronto lost the rebounding battle against Chicago, but I’m predicting a response today, particularly with the Clippers adjusting to an early East Coast start. Though Ivica Zubac and Derrick Jones Jr. will test the hosts’ discipline, I see Barnes answering the call alongside Jakob Poeltl.
Darko Rajakovic went with smaller lineups on Friday, with Chris Boucher and Kelly Olynyk not logging any minutes, and it could be the same story here to combat a wing-heavy L.A. team. Again, that puts the onus on Barnes to do the dirty work and clean the glass.
The Raptors’ franchise cornerstone has drawn praise lately for his locked-in defensive work, and there’s no reason why he can’t continue to be a nightly threat for double-digit boards.
Raptors vs Clippers same-game parlay
The city of L.A. is still digesting the blockbuster Luka Doncic trade, but the Clippers have looked comfortable padding their win total in the shadows all year. They’re 7-3 SU and 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games, and their 29-18-1 ATS mark this season speaks for itself.
The Clippers have a higher ceiling with Leonard back in action, and they’ve also won the last five meetings between these teams. The visitors eased to victory in the prior two games of this road trip, and I’m laying the points with the spread at a manageable 4.5, even with key scorer Norm Powell listed as questionable.
I’m also leaning into Harden’s ability to fill the box score. At slight plus-money odds, the Over 9.5 assists is an attractive play, and The Beard is coming off a fruitful January where he averaged 10 apg.
Harden has dished 10+ dimes in six of his last seven contests. Though he was held to seven assists in his last outing against Toronto, he’s going to have ample opportunities to find open shooters here — and Kawhi’s mere presence gives Harden more room to operate.

- The Under is 7-3 in the past 10 meetings between these teams, and it’s 29-19 for L.A. overall this year.
- The Raptors enter on the heels of four straight Unders, but the Over has been a winning ticket in three of the Clippers’ past four games.
- The defenses were on top in the teams’ November matchup, which ended in a 105-103 Clippers victory.

Clippers at Raptors picks and predictions
Prediction
Clippers 112, Raptors 105
Moneyline
PASS.
The Clippers (-210) are rolling on their road trip which they wrap up in Toronto (+170) on Sunday. I think they cover which is why I’ll take my wager to the spread.
Against the spread
BET CLIPPERS -5.5 (-105).
Over/Under
BET UNDER 220.5 (-110).
The Under has hit in 3 of the last 4 meetings between the teams. Toronto has stayed Under in 4 straight and 5 of their last 6 games. Even though the Clippers have gone Over in 3 of their last 4 games, they’re one of the top defensive teams, giving up just 107 points per game (third-best in the league). The Raptors are only scoring 111 PPG, 21st in the NBA. With those trends, I’m liking the Under for Sunday.

The LA Clippers are set to take on the Toronto Raptors in an exciting matchup on Wednesday night. Both teams have been playing well recently, making this game a highly anticipated one.The odds for this game are currently in favor of the LA Clippers, with a spread of -3.5 points. The over/under is set at 215.5 points.
As for picks and predictions, the Clippers are coming off a strong win against the Lakers and seem to be hitting their stride. With star players like Kawhi Leonard and Paul George leading the way, the Clippers have the firepower to come out on top in this game.
On the other hand, the Raptors have been playing solid basketball as well, with Fred VanVleet and Pascal Siakam leading the charge. They will be looking to defend their home court and come away with a win against a tough Clippers team.
Overall, this game is shaping up to be a close one, but I am leaning towards the Clippers to cover the spread and come out with a victory. The over/under is a bit trickier to predict, but I would lean towards the over given the offensive firepower of both teams.

#Clippers #Toronto #Raptors #odds #picks #predictionsBulls beat Raptors as trade talk heats up for Nikola Vucevic
TORONTO — He’s 6-10 and 260 pounds with guard-like shooting range all wrapped in one large red bow.
Yep, Bulls big man Nikola Vucevic could make one heck of a consolation prize.
That’s the reality for Vucevic these days, waiting for some resolution for All-Star-caliber players such as Jimmy Butler and De’Aaron Fox, then finding out his own fate as the trade deadline approaches.
And while Vucevic is usually good about compartmentalizing trade rumors this time of year, even he seemed curious to find out what’s going to happen at 2 p.m. Thursday
“I mean, I think I’ve kind of learned to shut it off and not worry about it too much over the years because I’ve been in so many rumors, trade talks, things like that,” Vucevic said Friday. “You just learn to deal with it. When I was younger, I thought about it more, it affected me more. But now you kind of, I mean, obviously as it gets closer, there’s a kind of waiting to see what happens. Does it happen or not? But I don’t sit at home and think, ‘Oh, what if it happens?’ The waiting game is never the most fun thing, but it’s part of it.”
It definitely didn’t mess with his game against the Raptors, and that was apparent from the start in the Bulls’ 122-106 victory.
Vucevic set the tone in the first quarter, scoring 12 points, going 5-for-7 from the field, grabbing six rebounds and handing out two assists. He finished with 21 points and 12 boards.
“I think we did a better job trying to find him than we did in previous games,” coach Billy Donovan said. “I thought he had everything kind of going. With Zach [LaVine] being out [for the birth of his child], we need him to do more of that.”
So why the consolation-prize talk with Vucevic?
A source reiterated to the Sun-Times that Bulls executive vice president Arturas Karnisovas has remained busy talking with the Warriors and Suns, monitoring where they stand in the Butler trade talks with the Heat. There’s growing momentum that if Butler goes to one or the other, that could open up talks with the Bulls (21-28) about LaVine or, at a lesser cap hit, Vucevic.
The Sun-Times reported that the Bulls still would be interested in getting involved as a third or fourth team in a Butler trade if more partners are needed, but that remains more of a long shot.
The Warriors do have the pieces to go after LaVine or Vucevic, and both would be immediate fits for different reasons.
As far as the Suns, it would be tougher to move LaVine because of Bradley Beal’s no-trade clause, but with veteran center Jusuf Nurkic wanting out, Vucevic could be a solid backup plan.
There always has seemed to be LaVine/ Lakers talk going back to last season, but the Sun-Times reported that possibility as all but dead back in December. Could Vucevic be an option there, however? Anthony Davis wants to move away from center, and they could use Vucevic’s shooting, but which player or players would be the return and what kind of draft pick could they get from the Lakers?
Vucevic realizes that if he is moved, it will be to a team that is likely playoff-bound and believes it can be a contender.
“If it happens and it’s a win-now situation, of course, you have to enjoy that part, appreciate that part, take on that challenge,” Vucevic said. “At this stage of my career, if I’m able to get in a situation where I can win now, play for something meaningful, that would be great, and I would enjoy that. We’ll see what happens.”
In a thrilling matchup, the Chicago Bulls emerged victorious over the Toronto Raptors with a final score of 108-103. The Bulls’ win came as trade rumors surrounding All-Star center Nikola Vucevic continued to heat up.Vucevic, who was acquired by the Bulls in a blockbuster trade last season, has been a key contributor to the team’s success. However, recent reports have suggested that the Bulls may be open to trading Vucevic as they look to shake up their roster.
Despite the trade talk swirling around him, Vucevic put up an impressive performance against the Raptors, scoring 23 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. His dominant play in the paint helped the Bulls secure a crucial win and improve their playoff positioning.
As the trade deadline approaches, the Bulls will have to weigh their options carefully when it comes to Vucevic. While his presence on the court is undeniable, the team may need to make some tough decisions in order to bolster their roster for a deep playoff run.
Regardless of what the future holds for Vucevic, Bulls fans can take solace in the fact that their team is currently playing some of their best basketball of the season. With key players stepping up and making big plays, the Bulls are proving that they are a force to be reckoned with in the Eastern Conference.

What to Know
The Chicago Bulls are taking a road trip to face off against the Toronto Raptors at 7:30 p.m. ET on Friday at Scotiabank Arena. The Bulls are expected to lose this one by 4.5 points, so we’ll see if that gives them a bit of motivation.
Last Wednesday, the Bulls found themselves the reluctant recipients of a 122-100 punch to the gut against the Celtics. Chicago was down 96-76 at the end of the third quarter, and things only got worse from there.
Meanwhile, the Raptors had already won four in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 12.8 points) and they went ahead and made it five on Wednesday. Everything went their way against Washington as they made off with a 106-82 victory. With Toronto ahead 57-38 at the half, the matchup was all but over already.
The Raptors were working as a unit and finished the game with 31 assists (they’re ranked third in assists per game overall). That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they’ve now racked up at least 25 assists in 14 consecutive matches.
Chicago has been struggling recently as they’ve lost eight of their last ten contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 20-28 record this season. As for Toronto, their win was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 15-32.
Keep an eye on the arc in Friday’s game: The Bulls have made nailing deep shots look easy this year this season, having averaged 16 threes per game. It’s a different story for the Raptors, though, as they’ve been averaging only 11.4. Given the Bulls’ sizable advantage in that area, the Raptors will need to find a way to close that gap.
The Bulls barely slipped by the Raptors in their previous meeting back in December of 2024, winning 122-121. Will the Bulls repeat their success, or do the Raptors have a better game plan this time around? We’ll find out soon enough.
