Transfer news live updates: January window tracker as Aston Villa consider Rashford move
Unai Emery says Aston Villa’s transfer window “is not normal” as they aim to sign “two or three players” before Monday night’s deadline.
So far this month Villa’s window has been led by Monchi, president of football operations, with the club relying on close contacts and players known to him and Emery.
It is a far from ideal situation, with Ezri Konsa their only option in central defence plus replacements needed for Emiliano Buendia and Jhon Duran. Emery said:
“The moment we are in this transfer window, it is not normal. But it is coming for different circumstances. We had to accept and take our decision. A few days to close the window and the club is working. We have to do something.
“But I am very happy with how they are responding. We played some matches even in the last month when players were close to leaving.
“Without Diego Carlos last week, Jaden Philogene and Jhon Duran. We were playing matches and collectively, we were getting the performances we needed. I’m very proud of them.”
Villa have been routinely pivoting in transfer targets and presently, hold an interest in several players across a number of positions, including Chelsea’s Axel Disasi and Joao Felix, as well as Marco Asensio from Paris Saint-Germain. Emery added:
“Hopefully in two or three days, we can join a minimum of two or three players more with us. And as well, I’m going to be very motivated with those players to get collectively our objective.”
Transfer news live updates: January window tracker as Aston Villa consider Rashford moveAs the January transfer window heats up, Aston Villa are reportedly considering a shock move for Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford. Transfer news LIVE! Tel wants Man Utd after snubbing Spurs, Garnacho latest, Villa eye Rashford, Chelsea chase Ferguson
‘Watkins is our striker’ – Emery reacts to Villa’s evening of transfer speculation Arsenal target Ollie Watkins is “happy to stay” at Aston Villa after Jhon Duran was sold to Saudi club Al-Nassr in a £64m deal before the transfer deadline.
The Gunners were preparing a spectacular second bid the England international after an an opening offer was rejected, with Arsenal desperate to sign a striker before Monday’s deadline. But Duran’s move to Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr may end Arsenal’s hopes as Aston Villa are unlikely to sell both strikers this month.
Meanwhile, Mathys Tel has sent Premier League clubs into a frenzy but telling Bayern Munich that he wants to leave. Tottenham have agreed a £50m deal but Manchester United believe they hold an advantage that could prove decisive in the race with Chelsea, Arsenal and Spurs – who Tel is reported to have rejected.
That may depend on selling Alejandro Garnacho, however, with United setting Chelsea a new price for the 20-year-old Argentina winger. Marcus Rashford is also searching for a move away from Old Trafford, but only one club looks like a possible option this January.

Rodri’s injury highlights Man City and Arsenal’s key difference in pursuit of glory
It isn’t often Pep Guardiola wishes he had suffered defeat. But as he looks back four months, to what now looks the moment Manchester City’s era of dominance came to an abrupt end, he said: “I would have preferred to lose that game and have Rodri all season, absolutely.”
Guardiola didn’t lose the game in question. John Stones’ 98th-minute equaliser against Arsenal in September seemed colossal in the context of the title race. Not now: or only in the way points have tended to escape Arsenal’s grasp. It was the second of seven games this season they have drawn after leading, despite a heroic defensive display in the second half.
For City, however, the seismic setback had nothing to do with the scoreline. Penalty shootouts aside, they lost a lone game in which Rodri appeared last season: the FA Cup final. They have lost 10 this season: none in the first month after the Spaniard was sidelined, then in a flurry.

Chelsea join battle for Brighton striker Ferguson
Ferguson has been the subject of interest from around Europe with Arsenal, Leverkusen, Bournemouth, and Tottenham all keeping tabs on the Irish 20-year-old.
Brighton are apparently willing to sell the youngster despite his potential, with a reported asking price of around £40m.

Tel wants Man Utd loan move
The 19-year-old Bayern Munich forward is a wanted man this winter, but he has rejected a £50m transfer to Tottenham and reports say he is keen on Old Trafford as a short-term destination.
Bayern would like to keep Tel, but he wants to depart for more playing time after a fading role under Vincent Kompany this season.
“Mathys can imagine a move away. We need to come to terms with the facts,” said Bayern Munich sporting director Max Eberl this week.
“Whether it’s a loan or a sale, we’ll see. It needs to be right for all parties. Will we do it? Our squad is very well set up.”

Chelsea sign England star Keira Walsh from Barcelona
Chelsea have signed England midfielder Keira Walsh from Barcelona on a four-and-a-half-year deal, the Women’s Super League club said on Friday, with the 27-year-old keen to move closer to her family.
The move marks a return to English football for Walsh after two-and-a-half years with the Spanish club having joined Barcelona from Manchester City in Sept. 2022 for a then world record fee in women’s soccer of 400,000 pounds ($495,920.00).
“I’ll be honest, I didn’t realise how difficult it would be to be away from my family and friends when I went abroad,” Walsh said on Chelsea’s official website.
“It’s no secret that I wanted to come and wanted to play closer to my friends and family. Just having my family back in the stands, it’s something I’ve just wanted for a long time.”
Walsh had been with City since 2014, where she had won one WSL title and three FA Cups, and at Barcelona won eight trophies at Barcelona including two Champions League titles and two Spanish league wins.
The midfielder has made 80 appearances for England, winning Euro 2022 and a runner-up at the World Cup in 2023 and joins a Chelsea team who have a seven-point lead over Manchester United in the WSL, and their next game is at Aston Villa on Sunday.
The signing comes just days after Chelsea made Naomi Girma the first female million-dollar player, signing the United States defender to a for a world-record transfer fee reported by British media to be in the region of 900,000 pounds.

Spurs loan Lankshear to West Brom
Will Lankshear has joined West Brom on loan from Tottenham until the end of the season.
The 19-year-old striker has made six first-team appearances for Spurs this term, scoring against Galatasaray in their Europa League meeting in November.
Lankshear will join up with West Brom on Monday, ahead of next Saturday’s Championship meeting with Sheffield Wednesday.
He told wba.co.uk: “I am delighted to join this great club. I’m looking forward to meeting my new team-mates and I can’t wait to play in front of all the fans.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for me to compete for game time and, hopefully, score goals that can help the club push on to get promoted during my time here.
“Tony Mowbray is a manager who everyone says only good things about and I’m keen to learn as much from him as I can over the next few months.”

Ruben Amorim meanwhile has heaped praise on Alejandro Garnacho for the way he has kicked on and “changed in everything” since the disappointment of being left out of the Manchester derby.
It is seven weeks since the Argentina international and fellow academy graduate Marcus Rashford were surprisingly omitted from the United squad that went on to to secure a late comeback win at City.
The latter’s continued exile is dominating the headlines, and while talk about Garnacho’s future also continues, the 20-year-old’s response to the City setback appears starkly different.
“He changed right away since that game against City,” head coach Amorim said of Garnacho. “The way he understands things and understands that I just want to help him, I just want to win games.
“He changed in everything: the approach when you talk with him, the way he recovers.
“He understands that sometimes I’m a different coach, that I am demanding in my way and sometimes it’s hard with the first impact because it’s a different kind of coach.
“He understands that it is never in a bad way, it’s always for him, but I am different person.
“I think all the merit (goes to) Garnacho. He is improving and we want to continue to improve with Garnacho.”

Spurs still attractive despite Tel snub
“It depends what the players are looking for,” Postecoglou said on potential new signings.
“You can look at it two ways, OK the league form is not great but there’s some pretty big possibilities to have success here in the last three or four months.
“It’s still a big club, it’s still a club that can challenge for honours and it’s whether the player sees the potential that we see right now, or certainly that I see. If it’s too much of a hard sell, it’s probably not the right one for us.
“You need a bit of discipline. The one thing I don’t want to do is bring somebody in who is just going to be another body.
“I don’t think that serves any purpose knowing what we’ve got coming. That aside, there is definitely a need for us and has been a need. That’s why we’ve been looking for a player or two to help us with what’s ahead, but they have to be the right types and fit in with what we’re doing.
“I guess that’s the tricky bit. There are plenty of players available but are they going to be the right ones? That’s the question for us.”

Spurs still attractive despite Tel snub
Tottenham remain an attractive proposition for new players ahead of Monday’s transfer deadline, according to Ange Postecoglou.
Spurs are in desperate need of reinforcements with nine first-teamers unavailable for the trip to Brentford on Sunday.
It has been a similar story across the last two months and while Postecoglou has repeatedly called for his depleted squad to be given help, the club are yet to sign an outfield player going into the final days of the transfer window.
Talks have taken place with Bayern Munich over the potential signing of Mathys Tel, but the 19-year-old forward has reportedly rejected the move.
Tottenham can still end a 17-year trophy drought this term with key Carabao Cup, FA Cup and Europa League fixtures to come during the next six weeks, but have dropped to 15th in the Premier League to raise relegation fears.

Spurs switch to Garnacho after Tel rejects move
Spurs are also reported to on the hunt for Alejandro Garnacho, after losing out on the chase for Mathys Tel of Bayern Munich.
Tel rejected a move to Tottenham after a transfer fee had been agreed between the two clubs.
But the Mail reports that Spurs have quickly shifted their attention to Old Trafford, where Garnacho is available and being courted by Napoli and Chelsea among other clubs in Europe.
Man Utd want £60m for the young winger, according to the Mail.

Totteham in advanced talks with Tomori
Spurs are closing in on the signing of AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori.
That’s according to Sky Sports, which claims the former Chelsea centre-half is a key target at Tottenham.
Spurs want to add a defender before the deadline on Monday, with Christian Romero and Radu Dragusin both injured and Micky Van de Ven only just recovered from a hamstring strain.
But Sky Sports says that although Spurs and Milan are in ‘advanced talks’, no agreement has yet been made with the player.
One to watch over the weekend.

Marcus Rashford: Aston Villa closing in on loan deal for Manchester United striker
Aston Villa are closing in on a loan deal for Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford before Monday’s transfer deadline.
Sources have told BBC Sport talks are at an advanced stage, but there is work to be done to finalise the move.
The prospect of working with Villa boss Unai Emery is understood to be an attractive one for the 27-year-old.
Rashford has not featured for United since being dropped by head coach Ruben Amorim for the Manchester derby on 12 December.
Amorim said on Wednesday he felt his side would be better with Rashford in it, but the player had not met the standards he demands of his squad.
“Imagine a talent like Rashford, our team should be so much better with him – but he has to change,” said the United manager.
“If he changes, we are more than welcome [to include him] – and we need it. But in this moment we have to set some standards. We are waiting for Rashford, if he wants it really bad.”
Rashford has been with United since the age of seven, made more than 400 appearances, won the Europa League, two FA Cups and two EFL Cups.
He scored in Amorim’s first game in charge, a 1-1 away draw at Ipswich on 24 November, before netting twice in a 4-0 win over Everton a week later.
But the forward was left out of the squad for United’s 2-1 victory at Manchester City on 15 December and subsequently told journalist Henry Winter he was “ready for a new challenge”.
Aston Villa is reportedly closing in on a loan deal for Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford. The talented forward has struggled for game time at Old Trafford this season and could benefit from a temporary move to Villa Park.Rashford burst onto the scene as a teenager and quickly became a key player for United, but has found himself on the fringes of the first team in recent months. A loan move to Villa would give him the opportunity to reignite his career and showcase his talents on a regular basis.
Villa are in need of attacking reinforcements and Rashford would provide them with a proven goal scorer and creative presence in the final third. The loan deal could be a win-win for both parties, with Rashford getting the chance to play regularly and Villa adding a quality player to their squad.
It remains to be seen if the deal will go through, but if it does, Aston Villa fans can look forward to seeing Marcus Rashford in claret and blue this season. Stay tuned for further updates on this potential transfer.

#Football #gossip #Gyokeres #AlexanderArnold #Marmoush #Olmo #RashfordMan Utd stance on Marcus Rashford exit clarified as three Saudi clubs show interest in ousted forward
Marcus Rashford’s future at Manchester United is ultimately down to the club’s board, although a joint decision will be taken with Ruben Amorim over whether he stays or leaves.
Amorim has dropped the 27-year-old forward in Man Utd’s last four games and speculation is growing that he could leave Old Trafford in the January window.
From a football perspective, there is no interference or pressure on Amorim from the board. It’s entirely up to the Man Utd head coach whether to pick Rashford or not. But when it comes to a possible exit, TEAMtalk understands it will be a joint decision between manager and the club’s leadership team.
Regardless of a player’s stature or their wage or their standing, Amorim is looking at form, both in training and, of course, in matches as well, when choosing his line-ups.
The manager is effectively making a statement by omitting the likes of Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho and Tyrell Malacia – showing all players what standards he expect to get selected. He made similar calls with Sporting CP, such as when he dropped Islam Slimani to the reserves in 2022.
Rashford has been recalled to the Man Utd squad for their game against Newcastle by Amorim and it will be interesting to see whether he gets minutes. It would be unusable, if a Rashford exit is already planned in January, to play a £40m+ asset and risk injury. We may see clues therefore as to Rashford’s future based on how involved he is in the game, and also any full-time scenes given it could, realistically, be his last game at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils are in a strong position with Rashford given he’s under contract until 2028 and a minimum bid of £40million would be required for them to consider a permanent January sale.
Man Utd could loan Rashford out in January
Another factor to consider regarding Rashford’s future is the fact that he is on significant wages of £325,000 per week. If you add his wage to the £40m price tag on his head, there’s a very limited pool of suitors that could afford that.
TEAMtalk understands that there is a possibility that Rashford could be loaned out in January with an option or obligation to buy included in the deal. A similar wage-split would be done to the deal Chelsea did with Arsenal for Raheem Sterling this past summer. Manchester United have not ruled out contributing to Rashford’s wages if the right suitor and structure emerges, but we are not close to this point yet given the club are yet to receive any formal approaches.
Rashford’s situation is not cut and dry and a January exit is not guaranteed. Amorim is essentially saying to Rashford that if he can show the right application in training then the door is open for him to return to playing regularly with the first team again.
But whether he stays or goes, Rashford’s future will undoubtedly be a major story in January,.
Paris Saint-Germain have been heavily linked with the forward of late but their interest in Rashford is a historical one, rather than a recent development.
In that enquiry, it was PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi who was leading the conversations with Rashford’s camp. The talks took place just before Rashford signed his latest contract extension, in 2023, and about six months later. On both occasions, PSG felt they were being used as leverage. The French giants will NOT go back in for Rashford unless he gives a clear indication that he wants the move. They are also moving away from signing superstar names on big wages and are focusing on younger, hungrier players in their recruitment. The mantra is essentially ‘buy young and where possible buy French’ with Desire Doue a perfect example. That means Rashford’s age could ultimately count against him as far as the French champions are concerned.
Three Saudi clubs interested in Rashford
Clubs from Saudi Arabia have previously made enquiries about Rashford and at that point, the player made it clear that he was not willing to go there. It would therefore take a U-turn for Rashford to decide to join a Saudi side mid-season, and going to the Saudi Pro League would call into question his England chances.
TEAMtalk understands that three Saudi clubs remain interested in Rashford. Any negotiations would be done through the central deal makers in Saudi, who are waiting to see whether Rashford gives any kind of green light or encouragement that he wants a move.
Al-Ahli, who want to sign a left-winger, are attentive to Rashford’s situation. They’re also interested in Atalanta’s Ademola Lookman, but that’s far more ambitious, and the expectation is that Lookman is not going to go anywhere in the January period. Al-Ahli would also have to de-register or sell a foreigner to sign Rashford, as their foreign quota is full.
Al-Ittihad, meanwhile, were previously interested in Rashford but they now have Stephen Bergwijn, who’s performing well for them currently, so they’re covered well in that position now.
Finally, Al Qadsiah, who are not a PIF club but have very wealthy owners in Aramco, are also interested in Rashford, so they could be one to watch.
A move to another Premier League club is less likely for Rashford. Tottenham did show interest in Rashford several years ago but now, Arsenal are the side most heavily linked with him. It is true that they may need to strengthen on the left and right wings, but Rashford isn’t a concrete target for them at this stage.
TEAMtalk understands that it is unlikely that Man Utd will wish to do business with another Premier League club mid-season, even though they offloaded Jadon Sancho to Chelsea, and did so knowing the obligation to buy is basically guaranteed because the Blues just have to finish 15th or better.
Man Utd are yet to receive any kind of inquiry or formal offer for Rashford. As mentioned, they could consider loaning him out and may agree to pay a percentage of his wages, but it will be interesting to see how involved he is in their coming matches and whether he can end the year by making a positive impact against Newcastle.

POLL: When do you think Rashford will leave Man Utd?
Manchester United has clarified their stance on the potential exit of forward Marcus Rashford, following reports of interest from three Saudi clubs. The Red Devils have made it clear that they have no intention of letting go of the talented young player, despite the interest from Al Nassr, Al Hilal, and Al Ittihad.Rashford, who has been with United since the age of seven, is seen as a key player for the club’s future and has been a fan favorite since breaking into the first team. The 24-year-old has been a consistent performer for United, scoring crucial goals and providing assists in important matches.
While the interest from Saudi clubs may be flattering for Rashford, United are adamant that he is not for sale and will remain an integral part of their squad. The club’s stance on the matter has been made clear to the player and his representatives, and they are confident that Rashford will continue to flourish at Old Trafford.
Fans will be relieved to hear that Rashford is not going anywhere, as he is seen as a vital part of United’s future success. With his pace, skill, and goal-scoring ability, Rashford is a player that any club would love to have in their ranks. United will be hoping that he can continue to develop and reach new heights in the coming seasons.

Stand-offs like Rashford and Amorim at Manchester United rarely end in true reconciliation
At this stage, it would probably be more of a surprise if Marcus Rashford was ushered back into Manchester United’s squad than if his current exclusion continued for another game, and possibly longer.
His team are struggling for points, four places above the Premier League’s relegation zone. Should they lose to Newcastle United at Old Trafford on Monday, that will be six defeats in December and the first time they have lost four in a row since 1961.
Who, though, can confidently predict that Ruben Amorim will bring Rashford back into a side that has scored fewer goals this season than 18th-placed Leicester City?
It feels unlikely given that Amorim’s recent selections have made it abundantly clear he does not like what he sees, or hears, when it comes to one of the club’s highest-paid players. Rashford has been omitted from the past four squads and, when a player is frozen out that way, the lesson of history is that the story rarely gets a happy ending.
Roberto Mancini did make up with Carlos Tevez (or, at least, was willing to tolerate him) after their relationship at Manchester City appeared to have disintegrated. Pep Guardiola did the same with Yaya Toure and, in both cases, it ended with the players coming in from the cold to help City win a league championship.
Tevez could even make light of the fact he had spent four months in exile because of the dispute that started with Mancini accusing him of refusing to come on, as a substitute, during a Champions League tie against Bayern Munich.
The Argentinian disappeared to Buenos Aires for much of that time and was photographed on a golf course, leading to questions about whether he cared more about his golf handicap than playing for his club. So when he scored a hat-trick in one of his comeback matches, a 6-1 win at Norwich City, he made a point of celebrating with a golf-swing.
Tevez celebrates with a golf swing after completing his hat-trick (Photo: Sean Dempsey/PA Images via Getty Images)Perhaps it is an unfair comparison in some respects given that Tevez’s dispute with City involved lawyers, some ugly public outbursts and open hostility rather than the same kind of issues that have led to Rashford’s removal from Amorim’s team — his attitude and lifestyle, in short, and the growing suspicion that a player with 60 England caps has badly blurred his priorities.
The point here, however, is that it can be difficult to recall many occasions when something similar has happened with one of the Premier League’s A-listers and that player’s relationship with his manager has survived.
In theory it should not be too hard, you might assume, for a manager and player to talk it out and agree that, whatever their differences, they can still be good for one another. In practice, however, it seldom happens that way.
So how does Rashford feel about United’s manager leaving him out of the squad for their games against Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, Bournemouth and Wolves? Is he angry? Does he feel unfairly singled out? Or does he accept, deep down, that he has been pushing his luck for some time and, if he is really honest, that he has brought these problems upon himself?
All that can really be said for certain is that Rashford seems keen to leave Old Trafford for another club and we know that because he, and his PR entourage, have made sure to get it out. Nor is it the first time he has given serious consideration to leaving in the past few years.
Rashford has spoken of seeking a new challenge but that is maybe easier said than done (Photo: Ash Donelon/Manchester United via Getty Images)United, in turn, would be open to selling him bearing in mind the growing evidence that Rashford, at 27, is no longer the player that everyone at Old Trafford expected, and wanted, him to be.
But a transfer is never going to be straightforward because of the numbers involved and, unfortunately for Rashford, potential buyers could be excused for having a few misgivings when the player in question is earning in excess of £325,000 a week ($413,000) and has been out of form for longer than he would probably wish to remember.
So the other option is that manager and player reach some sort of understanding and agree to put the past few weeks behind them. And that is clearly not straightforward either if you consider that, even when Jose Mourinho’s relationship with Paul Pogba was at its most strained, he never left him out of the entire squad for one match, never mind four in a row.
Harry Maguire has shown it is possible to return to United’s starting XI after being frozen out, removed as captain and made available for transfer during Erik ten Hag’s time as manager.
That, however, was a different set of circumstances given that Maguire’s absence was based on football reasons rather than, as it is with Rashford, it being about what is happening off the pitch as well as on it.
United fans may point out that Sir Alex Ferguson’s relationship with Wayne Rooney survived the player handing in a transfer request in 2010 and contemplating what would have been a treacherous cross-city switch to Manchester City.
The better comparison, perhaps, is what happened in the last few weeks of Ferguson’s reign, late in the 2012-13 season, when Rooney was removed from the team because the manager did not like the way he was living his life. The two men could barely make eye contact as they lined up to shake hands after Ferguson’s farewell match at Old Trafford and the presentation of the Premier League trophy.
Ferguson was planning Rooney’s departure (Photo: ANDREW YATES/AFP via Getty Images)The story at the time was that Ferguson had told his replacement, David Moyes, he had teed up Rooney’s departure as a leaving present. Chelsea wanted to sign the England striker. But Moyes had other ideas — as did Ed Woodward in his first summer as United’s chief executive — and sorted it out in a frank discussion with Rooney.
“Do you still think you’re a top player?” Moyes asked. Rooney replied that, yes, of course he did. “So, if you are a top player, why are Chelsea offering only £25million for you?” Moyes wanted to know. Rooney knuckled down and was United’s best player for the first half of the following season.
Perhaps Rashford could benefit from that kind of tete-a-tete and, if it has the same kind of impact, maybe it would help Amorim, too. Let’s not forget we are talking about a player who, with 138 goals, is 15th in United’s all-time list of scorers, ahead of Andy Cole, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Eric Cantona and various others who are considered to be United royalty.
Go back through the years, however, and there is a clear pattern that the exile of a high-profile player is usually a manager signalling those at the top that it is time to cut them free.
Perhaps you recall Mikel Arteta doing something similar with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to set in motion his departure from Arsenal at a time when many fans considered him their best striker.
Guardiola did the same with Joao Cancelo because of issues behind the scenes at City. Mancini gave up, in the end, on Mario Balotelli and, as happened with Rooney, sometimes it needs the manager to leave for a player to stay.
Every Newcastle fan of a certain generation remembers Ruud Gullit’s infamous spell as manager and the mutiny that was caused by him dropping Alan Shearer, the local hero, for a derby defeat against Sunderland, early in the 1999-2000 season.
The more relevant example, however, is Rob Lee, who was considered to be a Shearer ally, ostracised from Gullit’s team and made to train with the reserves. Lee, an England international, was not even given a squad number. But it was Gullit who lost the civil war and ended up resigning. Lee was brought back into the team by Bobby Robson and would later receive a testimonial season to mark his service to the club.
And Rashford? The saddest thing, perhaps, is that there was a time when it was easy to imagine he, a former academy player who has been at the club since the age of seven, would be awarded a testimonial of his own one day.
Maybe that can still be the case. It just doesn’t feel likely at the moment and, if he is left out again, we can probably conclude that Amorim is not willing to make exceptions just because of a player’s long association with the club.

Stand-offs like Rashford and Amorim at Manchester United rarely end in true reconciliationThe recent clash between Marcus Rashford and Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick has once again highlighted the difficult dynamics at play in high-pressure environments like professional football clubs. In this case, the stand-off between Rashford and Rangnick has raised questions about player power, management styles, and the delicate balance between individual talent and team success.
While the details of the specific incident between Rashford and Rangnick remain unclear, it is not uncommon for situations like this to arise in competitive sports environments. Players, coaches, and management all have their own perspectives, agendas, and egos, which can sometimes clash and lead to tensions that are difficult to resolve.
In cases like this, it is rare for true reconciliation to occur. Even if the parties involved are able to move past the immediate conflict, the underlying issues that led to the stand-off often remain unresolved. This can create a lingering sense of mistrust and resentment that can have a negative impact on team morale, performance, and ultimately, results on the pitch.
However, it is not impossible for stand-offs like this to be resolved in a constructive and positive manner. Communication, empathy, and a willingness to listen and compromise are key ingredients in any successful reconciliation process. Both parties must be willing to put aside their differences, acknowledge their own role in the conflict, and work together towards a common goal of team success.
In the case of Rashford and Rangnick, only time will tell if true reconciliation is possible. But one thing is for certain – stand-offs like this rarely end well for all parties involved. It is up to the individuals and the club to navigate these difficult situations with maturity, professionalism, and a commitment to finding common ground.

Man United’s Marcus Rashford returns to squad vs. Newcastle
Marcus Rashford has returned to the Manchester United squad after a four-game exile.
The forward was named on the bench for Newcastle United‘s visit to Old Trafford on Monday by head coach Ruben Amorim.
The 27-year-old hasn’t featured for United since the 2-1 win over Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League on Dec. 12.
He was dropped from the squad for the win over Manchester City on Dec. 15 with Amorim suggesting afterwards that the decision was based on the England international’s performances in training.
He also missed the defeats to Tottenham, Bournemouth and Wolves.
In the days after being omitted from the squad to face City at the Etihad, Rashford said he wanted to leave the club. He said the time is right for a “new challenge” and although Amorim has insisted he wants Rashford to stay at Old Trafford, sources have told ESPN that the club are open to offers in the January transfer window.
Rashford’s return has bolstered Amorim’s squad with both Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte suspended for the game against Newcastle.
Fernandes was sent off during the 2-0 defeat to Wolves on Boxing Day while Ugarte picked up his fifth booking of the season at Molineux.
Asked why Rashford was back in the squad, Amorim told Sky Sports: “Selection, and we have a lot of players outside so he’s in. Like I say every week, I choose my players and he was there to be chosen. This time, he’s here.”
After being sidelined with a shoulder injury for the past few weeks, Manchester United’s star forward Marcus Rashford is set to make his return to the squad for their upcoming match against Newcastle. Rashford, who has been in scintillating form this season, will undoubtedly provide a major boost to United’s attacking lineup. The 23-year-old has been a key player for United this season, scoring goals and providing assists on a consistent basis. His speed, skill, and creativity have made him a nightmare for opposing defenders, and his presence on the pitch will surely be welcomed by both his teammates and fans.
Rashford’s return comes at a crucial time for United, as they look to solidify their position in the top four of the Premier League table and make a push for the title. With Rashford back in the fold, United will have an even more potent attack and will be a force to be reckoned with in the coming matches.
Fans will be eagerly anticipating Rashford’s return to action, and they will be hoping that he can pick up right where he left off and help lead United to victory against Newcastle. With Rashford back in the squad, the future looks bright for Manchester United.

Premier League team news as Marcus Rashford returns to squad
Manchester United host Newcastle United in the Premier League this evening, with the home side desperate for three points as they look to rise from 14th in the table.
Ruben Amorim’s team has fallen to embarrassing defeats to Bournemouth and Wolves over the last two matches, and the Portuguese has just two wins in the league so far during his tenure.
And United face a Newcastle side who have found form in recent weeks, with consecutive 4-0 wins followed by a 3-0 victory over Aston Villa last time out.
After a mixed start to the season, the Magpies find themselves in seventh ahead of kick-off, with the potential to move into fifth if they grab three points tonight.
And with the recent form of both sides, Newcastle have rarely had a better chance to earn a first league win at Old Trafford since 2013.

Neville continues on Amorim’s 3-4-3 setup and on the prospect of altering that somewhat if he continues to suffer defeats:
“If you remember Louis van Gaal, it felt he signed several players to play wing-back but it changed very quickly. If the results continue as they are for Amorim, he might have to change something. Man United can’t go any lower than they are.”
A bit of a laugh in-studio then as it’s pointed out Man Unitedcan in fact go somewhat lower…! Not that Neville and co want to even consider that prospect!

On Sky Sports, Jamie Carragher has been discussing the lack of final-third ability from Man United’s wing-backs and now Gary Neville suggests Newcastle wouldn’t take too many players from their opponents.
How far have they fallen?
“There’s no doubt he’s sick of conceding goals at set pieces. When you look at Newcastle and Manchester United, how many players would Newcastle take? There wouldn’t be many.
“An in-form Onana over Dubravka, Amad over Murphy and maybe the form Maguire has been in, but then I’m struggling. Not sure Eddie Howe would be taking too many from the red shirts.”

Eddie Howe praises Martin Dubravka on Old Trafford return
19:00 , Harry Latham-Coyle
Keeper Martin Dubravka will renew acquaintances with Manchester United this evening having come in from the cold to play his part in Newcastle’s December revival.
The 35-year-old Slovakia international has conceded just one goal in four games and none in three Premier League outings since taking over from the injured Nick Pope earlier this month, and he will head for Old Trafford, where he had a loan spell during the 2022-23 campaign, looking for a fifth successive win.
Dubravka’s form, and in particular his distribution, has helped provide a solid foundation for the Magpies, and head coach Eddie Howe has been hugely impressed with the way a man who had made just one appearance for the club since May has slotted into the team.
Howe said: “I’m very pleased with Martin. It’s never easy to come in for a goalkeeper in any situation when you haven’t played for a while because it’s about rhythm and it’s about confidence, but Martin has picked it up from minute one.
“He’s distributed the ball really, really well – that’s been a huge thing in his game that’s always been there.
“Against Aston Villa (on Boxing Day), I think back to a number of aerial claims, catches that he’s taken under pressure – he’s dealt with that aspect really well too, so I’m really pleased with Martin.”

Amad Diallo keen to ‘make history’ with Manchester United
18:30 , Harry Latham-Coyle
Amad Diallo “wants to make history” with Manchester United as he aims to help Ruben Amorim turn around the club’s fortunes.
These remain troubled times for United, who have taken only seven points from Amorim’s first seven Premier League games in charge going into tonight.
But Diallo has offered some cause for optimism with his recent form, highlighted by his dramatic late winner in the Manchester derby as United scored two late goals to win 2-1 at City earlier this month.

Ruben Amorim enjoying ‘danger’ at Manchester United amid dismal form
18:20 , Harry Latham-Coyle
Ruben Amorim said he cannot be comfortable in his position as Manchester United head coach but likes the danger as his side’s slump continues.
United suffered their third consecutive defeat when they lost 2-0 at Wolves on Boxing Day to leave Amorim with five losses in his last seven games.
And he believes that his transfer fee – United paid Sporting CP €11m (£9.1m) to meet his buyout clause and bring him to Old Trafford early – will not protect him from the sack.
