  • Bitcoin drops below $100,000 as Trump’s trade war rattles markets — analysts split on what’s next – DL News

    • Bitcoin crashes below $100,000 as Trump’s tariffs spark market turmoil.
    • $200 billion wiped from crypto markets as traders brace for supply shocks and retaliation.
    • Some see a Bitcoin hedge play, but liquidity risks could drag prices lower.

Bitcoin tumbled below the $100,000 mark early Sunday as markets reacted to President Donald Trump’s sweeping new tariffs on America’s three largest trading partners.

The cryptocurrency market shed $200 billion in value, with every asset in the top 100 sinking into the red over the past 24 hours.

The sell-off came after Trump announced a 25% tariff on imports from Mexico and Canada alongside an additional 10% tariff on Chinese goods.

The administration justified the move under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, citing an “extraordinary threat” posed by illegal immigration and the fentanyl crisis.

Bitcoin, often considered a hedge against economic uncertainty, initially held steady but later plunged as risk-off sentiment spread.

The sudden downturn led to $540 million in liquidations, mostly from overleveraged long positions.

Bloomberg Economics estimates that the tariffs will push the US average tariff rate to its highest level since the 1940s.

Canada and Mexico have already pledged retaliatory tariffs, with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau confirming levies on $155 billion worth of US goods.

Some analysts see trade war tensions as a bullish narrative for Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.

Rising tariffs are stoking inflation concerns, and there is an increasing demand for alternative stores of value. Some investors believe Bitcoin could benefit as a hedge against economic instability and currency devaluation.

“You simply have not yet grasped how amazing a sustained tariff war is going to be for Bitcoin in the long run,” tweeted Jeff Park, head of alpha strategies at Bitwise.

Others fear liquidity shocks and market-wide risk aversion could continue weighing on price action in the short term.

“In the short term, Bitcoin still trades as a risk-on asset,” said Nic Puckrin, CEO of Coin Bureau. “If markets keep collapsing, it could bring BTC down with it and end the current cycle.”

    Crypto market movers

    • Bitcoin has lost 2% in the past 24 hours and is trading at $99,950.
    • Ethereum is down 4.5% over the same period to $3,115.

Bitcoin has taken a hit as the ongoing trade war between the US and China continues to rattle global markets. The cryptocurrency dropped below the $100,000 mark, causing concern among investors and analysts.

Some analysts believe that this drop is just a temporary setback and that Bitcoin will bounce back in the near future. Others, however, are more cautious and warn that the trade war could have a lasting impact on the cryptocurrency market.

The uncertainty surrounding the trade war has created a sense of unease among investors, leading to increased volatility in the market. As a result, Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies have seen significant fluctuations in value.

It remains to be seen what the future holds for Bitcoin and the broader cryptocurrency market. Will the trade war continue to weigh on prices, or will investors regain confidence and drive prices back up? Only time will tell.

  • Did you feel it? Earthquake rattles parts of Massachusetts, New England

Did you feel it? Earthquake rattles parts of Massachusetts, New England

FROM THE BREAKING NEWS DESK AS WE FOLLOW THE EARTHQUAKE. THE U.S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY INITIALLY REPORTING IT AS A 4.1. NOW THEY’RE SAYING IT’S A 3.8 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE THAT STRUCK JUST OFF THE COAST OF SOUTHERN MAINE. LET’S GET IT RIGHT OVER TO CHIEF METEOROLOGIST CINDY FITZGIBBON NOW. AND CINDY, A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE REPORTING THAT THEY FELT THIS FROM ALL OVER THE AREA. YEAH, ALL OVER NEW ENGLAND, TO BE HONEST WITH YOU, INCLUDING HERE IN THE BOSTON AREA. SO THIS HAPPENED AT 1022 THIS MORNING. AND INITIALLY IT CAME IN AND IS A MAGNITUDE 4.1. AND THEN IT WAS REVISED DOWN TO A 3.8 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE OCCURRING AT 1022. AND YOU CAN SEE WHERE IT IS. IT’S ABOUT SIX MILES OFF THE COAST SOUTHEAST OF YORK, MAINE, CENTERED HERE AROUND YORK HARBOR. AND THAT IS A GOOD DISTANCE FROM OUR AREA. BUT LOOK AT HOW MANY PLACES REPORTING FEELING THAT RUMBLING. IT WAS EITHER WEAK TO LIGHT RUMBLING THAT MANY OF US WERE FEELING IN OUR AREA. BUT EVEN HERE, INSIDE A STUDIO WITHOUT ANY WINDOWS, WE HEARD A LITTLE SOMETHING. JUST AFTER 1020 THIS MORNING AND WE HEARD IT TOO, AS MANY OF YOU DID, AS FAR OUT AS IN WORCESTER COUNTY AND ALL THE WAY DOWN TOWARD THE CAPE, WHICH IS A GOOD 90 MILES AWAY FROM THE CENTER OF WHERE THIS OCCURRED. NOW, IF YOU’RE THINKING EARTHQUAKES IN NEW ENGLAND, THAT DOESN’T HAPPEN ALL THAT OFTEN. AND THEY CAN HAPPEN. IN FACT, YOU MAY REMEMBER BACK ON APRIL 5TH, WE HAD A STRONGER ONE CENTERED IN NEW JERSEY. ANYTHING THAT IS 44 MILES OR LESS IS CONSIDERED SHALLOW. AND THIS PARTICULAR EARTHQUAKE WAS A DEPTH OF ABOUT EIGHT MILES. SO THIS IS A SHALLOW QUAKE, BUT IT CAN BE FELT FOR A PRETTY GOOD DISTANCE. AND IN NEW ENGLAND WE AVERAGE SEVERAL SMALL QUAKES A YEAR. MOST OF THESE ARE MAGNITUDE 2.5 OR LESS. THE GOOD NEWS ABOUT THIS WITH THIS TYPE OF MAGNITUDE OF AN EARTHQUAKE, YOU’RE NOT GOING TO BE LOOKING AT A TSUNAMI OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT. BUT THIS IS SOMETHING THAT REALLY GOT TO THINK. A LOT OF OUR ATTENTION JUST AFTER 1020 THIS MORNING, HEARING THAT KIND OF RUMBLING IN THE DISTANCE AND CLOSER TO THE CENTER OF THIS THROUGH PARTS OF SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE, A LOT OF YOU FEELING THE SHAKING AS WELL. BUT WE’RE GOING TO CONTINUE TO MONITOR THIS. WE HAVEN’T HAD ANY REPORTS OF DAMAGE JUST YET. ANTOINETTE YOU IN THE NEWSROOM MAY BE HEARING MORE SORTS OF THAT THAN WE ARE HERE, BUT NOT TERRIBLY UNCOMMON TO GET AN EARTHQUAKE HERE IN NEW ENGLAND. AGAIN, WE AVERAGE SEVERAL PER YEAR, BUT A MAGNITUDE 3.8 IS FAIRLY SIZABLE. I WAS JUST LOOKING UP SOME DATA FROM THE STATE OF MAINE, AND THEY AVERAGE ONE MAGNITUDE THREE POINT HIGHER PER YEAR IN THE STATE OF MAINE. ANTOINETTE. YEAH, LIKE YOU MENTIONED, CINDY. WE’RE CERTAINLY WORKING THE PHONES, CALLING SEVERAL MUNICIPALITIES AND CHECKING TO SEE IF THERE’S BEEN ANY DAMAGE. SO FAR, WE HAVE NOT HEARD OF ANY, BUT WE WILL, OF COURSE, KEEP YOU UPDATED ON ALL OF THIS COMING UP ON NEWSCENTER FIVE AT NOON.

Parts of Massachusetts and New England felt a rumble and shake Monday morning when a small earthquake hit the area.According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 3.8 magnitude quake hit about 6 miles off the southeast coast of York Harbor, Maine, at 10:22 a.m. WCVB viewers from across Massachusetts reached out to report the quake. “We just felt a pretty steady earthquake up here in Newburyport. My parents in Dover, New Hampshire and brother in Portland Maine both felt it as well,” one WCVB viewer wrote in an email. “Felt the earthquake in Methuen big time ! It was brief, 5-8 seconds but my entire house shook and I had couple loud bangs that I’m not sure what they were. It was pretty intense for something that small and brief!” another viewer wrote. “Just felt the house shaking, light swinging a little and table I was sitting at shaking. Did we just have an earthquake?” another viewer wrote. “I live at Lake Whalom in Lunenburg MA. I’m pretty certain we just had a small earthquake at approximately 10:20 AM. It lasted about 5-10 seconds and a pocket door near me was rattling and I could feel the vibration under my feet and my body on my couch. My husband came out of his office right away and asked ‘was that a tremor?’” another viewer wrote. Maine averages one magnitude 3 or higher earthquake each year. According to the USGS, earthquakes are not uncommon in the New York City/Philadelphia/Wilmington corridor. Moderately damaging earthquakes strike somewhere in that urban corridor roughly twice a century, and smaller earthquakes are felt roughly every two to three years, the USGS said.New York City was damaged by earthquakes in 1737 and 1884.This is a developing story. New Orleans building collapse rattles Lilly’s Café and community

Lilly’s Café Owner, Trinh Vong, says her car is still buried in bricks from the old guitar shop.

NEW ORLEANS — Lilly’s Café was packed for dinner Monday night when the building across the street started to crumble.

“We heard boom, boom, boom, then everyone ran out,” Lilly’s Café Owner Trinh Vong said.

Tuesday morning, Lilly’s Café Owner Trinh Vong says her car is still buried in bricks from the old guitar shop.

“Today, I’m a little shaken. I call my insurance company, and they say they’ve never heard of anything like it,” Vong said.

Nearby restaurants and businesses were evacuated Monday night after a building collapsed on the corner of Magazine and Felicity.

What caused the building to crumble is still under investigation, but it’s just the latest in a string of building emergencies.

Back in September, a blighted building on Oretha Castle Haley collapsed. In October, the building next door to the guitar shop went up in flames. Then two weeks ago, a partial building collapse in the CBD cut of pedestrian access on O’Keefe avenue for days.

Now City Council President Helena Moreno and State Senator Royce Duplessis says they’re trying to find a way to make sure this doesn’t happen again.

“What I’m interested in is what we can do in the future to prevent situations like this,” City Council President Helena Moreno said. “and whether we need to take a look at some of our older buildings and do a structural analysis to figure out the condition of our buildings,” Moreno said.

The City released a statement saying they’re “Working to collaborate with the New Orleans City Council to develop legislation on regular inspections for vacant historical structures and businesses.”

The owner of the building told WWL Louisiana he just bought the building a few months ago and had plans to renovate it. Now, instead of hiring renovation crews, he’s hiring demolition crews.

The recent building collapse in New Orleans has left the community shaken, especially at Lilly’s Café. The popular eatery, known for its cozy atmosphere and delicious Creole cuisine, is located just a few blocks away from the site of the tragedy.

The collapse has brought up concerns about the safety of older buildings in the area, and the impact it could have on local businesses like Lilly’s Café. The owners and staff are grateful that no one was hurt in the incident, but they are also worried about the potential loss of business as customers may be hesitant to visit the neighborhood.

Despite the challenges, the community has come together to support Lilly’s Café and the other businesses affected by the collapse. Local residents have been rallying around the café, offering their help and patronage to ensure that it can continue to thrive in the wake of this disaster.

As the investigation into the building collapse continues, Lilly’s Café is determined to stay strong and resilient. The owners are grateful for the outpouring of support from the community and are hopeful that they can overcome this setback and continue to serve their loyal customers for years to come.
