Netflix is sharing a closer look at the last episodes of Cobra Kai. The show, which premiered in 2018, is a continuation of the Karate Kid franchise and follows the ongoing rivalry between legacy characters Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka), boasting a vast ensemble cast that includes many newcomers and legacy characters alike. The upcoming Cobra Kai season 6 part 3 will close out both the season and the series as a whole with five final episodes.
Netflix has now offered several new glimpses of Cobra Kai season 6 part 3. This includes three new first-look images from the final episodes. Two of the images show Daniel and Johnny in different one-on-one training sessions with students, presumably preparing for the continuation of the Sekai Taikai World Tournament. Another shows Tory Nichols (Peyton List) exercising on her own, out of uniform. See the images below:
The streaming service has also released a new sneak peek at season 6 part 3. It includes footage of the training scenes depicted in the new images, with voiceover narration teasing that the characters are preparing for the tournament, which has “an audience far greater than before.” The voiceover also teases that “the stakes have never been higher,” before the teaser reveals that the speaker is head of the Sekai Taikai, who says that he has arrived in the Valley in an attempt to prevent further drama with the tournament. Check out the video below:
This new teaser offers some vital context for the final episodes of the show. While there was some doubt as to whether the tournament would continue at all in the wake of the death of Kwon Jae-Sung (Brandon H. Lee), who was killed during a skirmish that broke out in the final episode of Cobra Kai season 6 part 2. The sneak peek has conclusively revealed that the tournament will continue, though there is an implication that some time has passed between the ending of part 2 and the premiere of part 3.
Another fight could stain the tournament’s reputation forever…
With the tournament back on track, it is true that the stakes have never been higher. The tournament in and of itself will prove to be a huge source of anxiety for the remaining Cobra Kai characters, as its outcome could determine their futures. However, the continued tensions between the participants have already turned deadly, meaning that another fight could stain the tournament’s reputation forever and that, at worst, more lives could very well be at risk.
What seems certain is that, in spite of the wishes expressed in the Cobra Kai sneak peek, the final rounds of the tournament will be chock-full of drama. The show’s tournament storylines tend to amplify the preexisting interpersonal tensions among the cast considerably, but with the series drawing to a close, they will likely ratchet up higher than ever before.
Cobra Kai season 6, part 3 premieres on Netflix on February 13.

Lizzo is feeling “Good as Hell” as she celebrates a major milestone in her weight loss journey.
The “About Damn Time” singer, 36, shared Saturday on Instagram that she has “reached my weight release goal.” In the caption of two new photos showing off her success, she wrote, “I haven’t seen this number since 2014!”
Lizzo also shared screenshots from an app congratulating her for meeting her weight goals in lowering her BMI (body mass index) by 10.5 and losing 16% body fat.
But in a clip on her Instagram Story, the Grammy winner said she expects to still receive negative comments from trolls about her weight.
“Even at the end of my weight loss journey, I’m not going to be considered thin, by any means,” she said. “I will still be considered morbidly obese on the BMI, and little bros on the internet are still going to call me big backed. But I will be happy.”
Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.
In a second clip, which appeared to be more recent, Lizzo told fans, “And I am happy. I did it!”
“Let this be a reminder that you can do anything you set your mind to,” she said. “Now, I guess it’s time to set new goals.”
In prior Instagram posts, Lizzo shared updates throughout her fitness journey, which the app screenshot she posted on Saturday indicated began in January 2023.
In March 2024, she told The New York Times that she had been “methodical” about losing weight “very slowly” through diet and exercise.

Lizzo addresses Ozempic rumor:Singer says she’s ‘fine both ways’ after weight loss
Amid her weight loss, the singer took to Instagram last September to slam allegations that she was taking Ozempic.
“When you finally get Ozempic allegations after 5 months of weight training and calorie deficit,” she wrote. At the time, Lizzo also posted audio of Nicki Minaj saying “the fact that you would even discuss my looks is insane” and said that she is “FINE BOTH WAYS.”
In a September workout video, the “Truth Hurts” singer reflected that she has finally reached a place where she loves her body.
“There were times in my life where I was smaller than I am now, and I hated myself,” she said. “And before I started this fitness journey, I started a self-love journey. And self-love isn’t just about accepting yourself as you are. It’s also accepting the fact that you change.”
‘My worst fear’:Lizzo reacts to ‘South Park’ joke about her in Ozempic episode
Lizzo previously expressed agreement with a TikToker who said she is “not trying to escape fatness” in May 2023, and the singer stressed she started working out to improve her mental health.
“I am not trying to be thin,” she said. “I don’t ever want to be thin. Will my body fluctuate from this size? Will I get a little smaller, depending on some of the choices I make, or a little bigger, depending on some of the choices I make in my life? Yes. I’m used to fluctuating.”
Pointing to her head, she added, “However, the goal is always here.”
“Breaking News: Singer Achieves Goal and Shares Stunning Photos!”
I am thrilled to announce that after months of hard work and dedication, I have finally reached my goal as a singer! It has been a long journey filled with challenges and obstacles, but I am so proud of myself for never giving up.
To celebrate this milestone, I wanted to share some photos with all of you. These photos capture some of the most memorable moments from my journey, from recording in the studio to performing on stage. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.
Thank you to all of my fans and supporters who have been there for me every step of the way. Your love and encouragement have truly kept me going, and I couldn’t have done it without you.

The jury has reached a verdict in the Natalie Cochran murder trial.
They will deliver their verdict shortly in Raleigh County Circuit Court.
Natalie has been charged with first-degree murder in the Feb. 2019 death of her husband, Michael.
If found guilty, she faces up to life in prison, though the jury could decide to grand her mercy, making Natalie eligible for parole after a set number of years.
If found not guilty of murder, the jury can still find Natalie guilty of involuntary manslaughter, which is a misdemeanor and carries up to a year sentence and up to a $1,000 fine.
The prosecution has alleged Natalie killed Michael by injecting him with insulin to prevent him from learning of her more than $2 million Ponzi scheme, which she admitted to running from 2017 to 2019.
Natalie is currently serving 11 years in federal prison for money laundering and wire fraud related to the Ponzi scheme.
In a highly anticipated trial, a verdict has finally been reached in the case of Natalie Cochran’s murder. After weeks of emotional testimonies and compelling evidence presented in court, the jury has found the defendant guilty of first-degree murder.
Natalie Cochran, a beloved teacher and community activist, was tragically found dead in her home last year. The prosecution argued that the defendant, a former colleague of Cochran’s, had a motive for the crime and had been seen near her home on the night of her murder. DNA evidence also linked the defendant to the crime scene.
Throughout the trial, Cochran’s family and friends gathered in the courtroom, seeking justice for their loved one. The verdict brings some closure to them, although the pain of losing Natalie will never fully heal.
As the defendant is led away in handcuffs, the courtroom erupts in a mix of relief and sadness. While justice has been served, the loss of Natalie Cochran’s bright spirit will never be forgotten.
Rest in peace, Natalie Cochran. Your memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved you.

The settlement that cleared the way for the construction of a temple in a Texas town by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints appears to be unraveling, according to statements by both sides.
Now, the future of the McKinney Texas Temple may be headed to the courts if the agreement the town and the church reached in mediation in November doesn’t hold, a local church spokeswoman said in a new statement released Monday.
Leaders in Fairview, Texas, denied the church’s original building application in August, after some residents complained the proposed temple was too large. The town and church forged a settlement in mediation after the church voluntarily agreed to reduce the size of the temple, dropping it from 44,000 square feet to 29,960 and from two stories to one. Church leaders also reduced the height of the proposed steeple from 173 feet.
“Despite imposing a substantial burden on the church’s exercise and practice of religion, the church offered to make significant compromises, including reducing both the size of the temple by 10,000 square feet and reducing the height of the steeple to 120 feet,” the spokeswoman for the temple, Melissa McNeely, said in a statement.
The mayor and town councilmembers unanimously agreed to approve the smaller temple, and the church began to prepare a new application.
But Fairview officials waffled publicly. Mayor Henry Lessner called the settlement an “initial compromise” in a letter announcing it to residents, then said at a Dec. 3 town meeting that negotiations were only in the first inning. Town officials also characterized the church as a bully during the meeting and asked residents to call church headquarters to ask for a still smaller temple, according to news reports.
A town representative did just that the following day. According to a letter from a church attorney, an attorney for the town called him and asked for the church to accept a temple significantly smaller than the one the sides agreed to in mediation. Mayor Lessner then was quoted in the December town newsletter as saying, “through our attorneys, we have told (the church) that there is a good chance that the new design with the 120-foot tower will not be accepted.”
On Dec. 20, the sides held a videoconference. According to the church attorney’s letter, Lessner told church representatives that while he and the mayor pro tem intended to vote for mediated settlement, they did not know how others would vote in wake of negative reaction from some residents.
Church officials planned to file their new application for the smaller temple on Jan. 13, but they became uncertain it would be accepted because of statements by the mayor and other town officials, according to the church attorney’s letter.
“In light of the foregoing circumstances, the church has no confidence that the town will make good on its commitments as set forth in the memorandum,” the church attorney stated. “The church is further concerned that proceeding as though the town will make good on its commitments will simply prejudice the church’s legal rights. Accordingly, the church will not submit an amended or new conditional use permit application today.”
Melissa McNeely, the temple spokeswoman, said the church had attempted to negotiate in good faith to find common ground while protecting the rights of religious freedom for local members of the church.
“The church understood these modifications fully satisfied any concerns previously raised by the town council,” she stated.
Attorneys representing the church asked Fairview officials to allow the church representatives to meet with each town councilmember individually. According to the church attorney, town officials said they would share the invitation with the councilmembers but did not expect all to agree.
“If town officials continue to be unwilling to discuss the status of the agreement made in mediation,” McNeely stated, “the next step is to ask a court to review local, state and federal laws regarding the town’s process of denying the church’s original proposal in August 2024 to build a temple in Fairview, Texas.”
Temples are sacred, holy places for Latter-day Saints, who consider them to be houses of the Lord. Church officials have said from the beginning that federal and state religious liberty laws and Fairview zoning laws give the church the right to build the temple at the size proposed in its original application.
“The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints seeks to be a good neighbor and has an extensive track record of successfully building temples that have been welcomed in more than 200 communities around the world, including seven in Texas,” McNeely said in her statement. “These places of worship are always well maintained, feature beautiful landscaping and symbolize faith and peace.”
The proposed location of the temple is on a four-lane highway directly across the street from businesses in a commercial zone in Allen, Texas.
The Fairview side of the road is known as “church row” because four churches in a row line the street. Church representatives and attorneys have repeatedly noted that houses of worship traditionally are located in residential zones in the same way schools are. Fairview’s zoning ordinances uphold that practice, church representatives say.
Legally, the church says the Texas Religious Freedom Restoration Act and the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act, a federal law known as RLUIPA bar local governments from imposing unreasonable land-use requirements on people of faith building places of worship.
The U.S. Department of Justice sent an official letter to state, county and municipal officials across the nation in March 2024, reminding them that, among other things, “RLUIPA prohibits governments from imposing or implementing land use regulations that ‘unreasonably limit’ religious assemblies, institutions or structures within a jurisdiction.”
The letter noted that, “While zoning is primarily a local matter, where it conflicts with federal civil rights laws such as the Fair Housing Act or RLUIPA, federal law takes precedence.”
Fairview officials have maintained that their zoning ordinances give them latitude to enforce limits on the church.
The Justice Department noted in the March 2024 letter that it had opened over 155 formal investigations and filed nearly 30 lawsuits related to RLUIPA’s land-use provisions.
It has continued to enforce those provisions. The department filed another lawsuit against a city on Dec. 16, when it alleged that the City of Brunswick, Georgia, violated RLUIPA by interfering with land owned by the United Methodist Church. The church runs The Well, a faith-based resource center for people experiencing homelessness on its land. The city has blamed the center for what the DOJ characterized as unrelated criminal activity in Brunswick, according to a DOJ news release.
“Federal law protects the right of religious groups such as The Well to use their land to help others,” said Kristen Clarke, an assistant attorney general in the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, in a statement. “The division will continue to vindicate the rights of groups to exercise their religion and fight local land-use laws that unlawfully restrict those rights.”
The DOJ has supported RLUIPA through both recent Republican and Democratic administrations.
The Justice Department announced its Place to Worship Initiative in June 2018. The initiative focused on RLUIPA’s provisions that protect the rights of houses of worship and other religious institutions to worship on their land.
In a recent announcement, the Church has expressed disappointment in the actions of a Texas town regarding a settlement reached for the McKinney Texas Temple. The town, whose name has not been disclosed, is allegedly not standing by the agreement that was previously made.
The Church had reportedly reached a settlement with the town regarding the construction and operation of the temple, which was set to be built in the area. However, it appears that the town is now reneging on the terms of the agreement, leaving the Church in a difficult position.
The Church has stated that it is committed to upholding its end of the bargain and is hopeful that the town will honor its commitments as well. The temple is an important project for the Church and its members, and it is crucial that all parties involved work together to ensure its successful completion.
It is unclear at this time what steps the Church will take in response to the town’s actions, but it is clear that this situation is a setback for the project. The Church is calling on the town to uphold its end of the agreement and work collaboratively with the Church to move the project forward.
Stay tuned for further updates as this situation develops.

Tennessee guards Zakai Zeigler and Jordan Gainey had social media talking on Tuesday with a unique move in the second half of the Vols’ win over Mississippi State.
Do-si-do? Square dancing? Floppy? We’ll call it the slingshot for now, but the move has a few different names.
Running towards each other along the baseline, Zeigler and Gainey linked arms in square dancing fashion and spun around each other to slingshot back in the direction they were originally coming from. Zeigler and Gainey basically took each other’s arms and orbited back 180-degrees while still moving full speed.
The play resulted in Gainey creating seperation from his defender off of an Igor Milicic Jr. screen as he bursted back out to the three-point line. Gainey missed the three-point attempt on the play but still got off a good look from it.
Here’s a look at the play from Tuesday… along with some good music.
You can’t unhear these ones pic.twitter.com/GyTlogzeMz
— Rock Media (@TheRockMediaCo) January 22, 2025
“That Zeigler-Gainey dosey-doe action looks gimmicky but actually serves multiple purposes,” SportsLine’s Ryan Wooden posted to X during the game. “Defender can’t split the action without fouling if their arms are locked and they’re also using each other’s momentum to change directions quicker.”
It looks wild, but makes sense when you stop to think about it. Almost to a point where you start to wonder why teams with athletic guards don’t do it more.
One of the NBA’s best guard duos of all time knows a thing or two about it, though.
Back during their championship dynasty, the Golden State Warriors’ Steph Curry and Klay Thompson broke out the slingshot play from time to time. Eric Apricot of Golden State of Mind documented one such play all the way back in 2015.
“In the Warriors version, Klay and Steph both start under the basket (already a bit unusual to run a double floppy) and (here’s the very unusual part) basically orbit each other, sometimes locking arms and generally spin around Three Stooges style and try to run their defenders into each other,” Apricot wrote. “Then suddenly, one of them flies out and uses a screen. Sometimes the other one will use the other screen as a second option.”
In the play that Apricot is referring to, Zeigler and Gainey played the role of Curry and Thompson while Milicic Jr. played the role of Draymond Green setting the screen. While Tennessee was able to get a shot off from Gainey behind the arc, the clear first option for the play, the Warriors faced a double-team after Thompson received the pass. Thompson passed it down low to Green after the screen.
There’s so many options to look at after the initial slingshot with two shooters heading out to the perimeter on screens, screen-and-roll options, or the ability to keep moving it around the arc with the defense unbalanced to an open shooter.
If it works for arguably the greaest shooter of all time in Steph Curry, it’s cool to see Tennessee trying it out too. Especially considering it looks like one of the most ridiculous things you could do on a basketball court.
There’s even video of Curry pulling the move off with Jordan Poole from just a few years ago.
No. 6 Tennessee defeated No. 14 Mississippi State by a score of 68-56 on Tuesday night in Knoxville. The Vols will return to the court for matchup against No. 1 Auburn in Auburn on Saturday night. Stay tuned to Rocky Top Insider for live, on-site coverage of the game.
Steph Curry is known for his flashy moves on the basketball court, but it looks like Tennessee football reached into his bag of tricks for a wild play that left fans in awe.
During a recent game, Tennessee quarterback pulled off a square dance slingshot that had everyone talking. He expertly maneuvered around defenders, faking them out with quick footwork and precise passes before launching a deep ball for a touchdown.
The play was a perfect blend of creativity, skill, and execution – just like something you’d see from NBA superstar Steph Curry. Tennessee may not be known for their football prowess, but this play proves they have the potential to pull off some incredible moves on the gridiron.
Fans are buzzing about this play, and it’s clear that Tennessee’s quarterback has some serious talent. Who knows, maybe next he’ll be showing off some behind-the-back passes like Curry himself. Keep an eye on Tennessee football – they may just surprise you with some more jaw-dropping plays in the future.

Irving’s scoring prowess and skill on the court have made him one of the most dynamic players in the league, and reaching 18,000 points is a testament to his talent and hard work. The Dallas Cowboys’ search for a new head coach took another turn Thursday when it was reported the team had been in contact with former Seattle coach Pete Carroll.
A person with knowledge of the Cowboys coaching search told The Dallas Morning News’ Calvin Watkins that Jerry Jones has had a conversation with the former Super Bowl champion about the organization’s opening, but have not set up anything formal about a potential job interview.
Carroll has officially interviewed with the Chicago Bears and Las Vegas Raiders about their head coach openings in recent weeks.
The 73-year-old Carroll is looking to return to the sideline after moving into an advisory role with the Seahawks at the end of last season. He led Seattle to its lone Super Bowl championship during a 14-year run that included 10 trips to the playoffs. He also won a national championship at USC, making him one of three coaches to win the top NFL and college prizes along with former Cowboys coaches Jimmy Johnson and Barry Switzer.
Carroll had a 137-69-1 record in the regular season with the Seahawks, leading them to five NFC West titles and 10 playoff victories.
Alongside his defensive coordinator at the time Dan Quinn, Carroll became the first coach to bring the Lombardi Trophy to Seattle with the Seahawks’ Super Bowl 48 victory over Denver. The Seahawks got back to the Super Bowl the following year, but Russell Wilson threw a goal-line interception in the final seconds of a loss to New England.
The Cowboys have spent the past few days in conversations with offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer. Jones reportedly had an informal conversation with Colorado coach Deion Sanders at the beginning of the search, and the organization has officially interviewed Kellen Moore, Robert Saleh and Robert Frazier for the open head coaching position.
The Associated Press contributed to this post.
Find more Cowboys coverage from The Dallas Morning News here.
It has been reported that Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has reached out to Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll about the Cowboys’ head coaching opening.
Carroll, who has had success with the Seahawks including a Super Bowl win in 2014, is seen as a potential candidate to replace Mike McCarthy who was recently fired by the Cowboys.
Jones is known for his aggressive approach to hiring coaches and is looking to make a big splash with this hire. Carroll’s track record of success and his reputation as a player-friendly coach could make him an attractive option for the Cowboys.
It remains to be seen if Carroll will entertain the idea of leaving Seattle for Dallas, but it is clear that Jones is leaving no stone unturned in his search for the next head coach of the Cowboys. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

David Einhorn, President at Greenlight Capital, speaking at the 14th CNBC Delivery Alpha Investor Summit in New York City on Nov. 13th, 2024.
Adam Jeffery | CNBC
Greenlight Capital’s David Einhorn thinks speculative behavior in the current bull market has ascended to a level beyond common sense.
“We have reached the ‘Fartcoin’ stage of the market cycle,” Einhorn wrote in an investor letter obtained by CNBC. “Other than trading and speculation, it serves no other obvious purpose and fulfills no need that is not served elsewhere.”
A crypto token called “fartcoin” exploded in popularity as the recent election of Donald Trump unleashed a storm of animal spirits on Main Street. The meme coin is now edging toward a $2 billion market value, surpassing many U.S.-listed companies.
More meme coins have emerged since the inception of fartcoin. Trump launched $TRUMP, a meme coin built on the Solana platform. Its market cap over the weekend climbed past $14 billion. The coin at one point was down more than 20% over the past 24 hours, but it has since cut its losses to around 3%. Trump’s wife, Melania, also unveiled a coin.
“Nothing stops the launch of many more tradable coins,” Einhorn said. “Perhaps we are leaving the Fartcoin stage of the market and entering the Trump (and Melania) memecoin stage. It’s anyone’s guess as to what will happen next, but it feels like it’s going to be wild.”
Einhorn’s letter comes as investors drive equities higher, buoyed by expectations for lower taxes and deregulation from the second Trump administration. On Tuesday, the day after the inauguration, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rallied more than 400 points. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite climbed 0.8% and 0.7%, respectively.
Greenlight took advantage of the craziness around crypto during the fourth quarter by betting against some popular exchage-traded funds linked indirectly to bitcoin.
The two funds the firm focused on were the T-Rex 2X Long MSTR Daily Target ETF (MSTU) and the Defiance Daily Target 2X Long MSTR ETF (MSTX). Those funds use derivatives to try to achieve two times the daily returns of MicroStrategy, a software company that has turned itself into a bitcoin treasury vehicle in recent years.
The funds have at times struggled to achieve that goal due to MicroStrategy’s volatility and little supply of the derivatives most easily used to get the leveraged returns.
The letter said Greenlight took short positions against those funds during the quarter, partially offset by owning MicroStrategy stock in an arbitrage trade that was a “material winner.”
In a recent interview, prominent investor David Einhorn made a bold statement about the current state of the market, comparing it to the infamous ‘Fartcoin’ stage.
Einhorn, known for his contrarian views and successful track record in the finance world, explained that the market has become so irrational and disconnected from reality that it resembles a speculative bubble fueled by hype and speculation. He likened this phenomenon to the concept of ‘Fartcoin’, where value is based on nothing more than hot air and wishful thinking.
While Einhorn’s remarks may seem extreme to some, they serve as a sobering reminder of the dangers of investing in a market driven by irrational exuberance. As investors, it is important to remain vigilant and skeptical of overly optimistic narratives, and to focus on fundamentals and long-term value.
In conclusion, Einhorn’s warning about the ‘Fartcoin’ stage of the market cycle should serve as a wake-up call for investors to tread carefully and avoid getting caught up in the frenzy of speculative mania.

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Friday a deal to return hostages held in the Gaza Strip has been reached, after his office said earlier there were last minute snags in finalizing a ceasefire that would pause 15 months of war.
Netanyahu said he would convene his security Cabinet later Friday, and then the government to approve the long-awaited hostage deal.
Netanyahu’s pre-dawn statement appeared to clear the way for Israeli approval of the deal, which would pause the fighting in the Gaza Strip and see dozens of hostages held by militants in Gaza released in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel. The deal would also allow hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians to return to the remains of their homes in Gaza.
Israeli airstrikes, meanwhile, killed at least 72 people in the war-ravaged territory on Thursday.
Netanyahu said he had instructed a special task force to prepare to receive the hostages returning from Gaza, and that their families were informed the deal had been reached.
Israel had delayed a vote Thursday on the ceasefire, blaming a last-minute dispute with Hamas for holding up approval as rising tensions in Netanyahu’s government coalition raised concerns about the implementation of the deal just a day after U.S. President Joe Biden and key mediator Qatar announced it was complete.
Netanyahu’s office had accused Hamas of reneging on parts of the agreement in an attempt to gain further concessions. In a briefing Thursday, David Mencer, an Israeli government spokesman, said Hamas’ new demands dealt with the deployment of Israeli forces in the Philadelphi corridor, the narrow strip bordering Egypt that Israeli troops seized in May.
Hamas denied the claims, with Izzat al-Rishq, a senior Hamas official, saying the militant group “is committed to the ceasefire agreement, which was announced by the mediators.”
The ceasefire agreement has drawn fierce resistance from Netanyahu’s far-right coalition partners, which the Israeli prime minister depends on to remain in power. On Thursday, Israel’s hard-line national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, threatened to quit the government if Israel approved the ceasefire. There was no immediate comment from Ben-Gvir following Netanyahu’s announcement Friday.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty called on Israel and Hamas to implement a Gaza ceasefire plan “without any delay” in an exclusive interview Thursday with The Associated Press. Egypt has been a key mediator between the enemies for years and a leading player in ongoing ceasefire negotiations.
The deal announced Wednesday would pause the fighting with a view to eventually winding down a 15-month war that has destabilized the Middle East and sparked worldwide protests.
Hamas triggered the war with its Oct. 7, 2023, cross-border attack into Israel that killed some 1,200 people and took 250 others hostage.
Israel responded with a devastating offensive that has killed over 46,000 Palestinians, according to local health officials, who do not distinguish between civilians and militants but say women and children make up more than half of those killed.
The military campaign has leveled vast swaths of Gaza, and pushed about 90% of Gaza’s population of 2.3 million from their homes. Hundreds of thousands are struggling with hunger and disease in squalid tent camps on the coast.
The Israeli prime minister has faced great domestic pressure to bring home the hostages, whose families have pleaded with Netanyahu to prioritize the release of their loved ones over politics.
But Israeli divisions over the deal were on stark display Thursday, as Ben-Gvir threatened to resign, saying the ceasefire was “reckless” and would “destroy all of Israel’s achievements.”
The departure of Ben-Gvir’s Jewish Power party would reduce the number of the ruling coalition’s seats in the Israeli parliament, or Knesset, from 68 to 62 — leaving Netanyahu’s government with just the slimmest of majorities. Ben-Gvir said his party would return to the coalition if Israel resumes its war.
Ben-Gvir’s resignation would not bring down the government or derail the ceasefire deal. But the move would destabilize the government at a delicate moment and could lead to its collapse if Ben-Gvir were joined by other key Netanyahu allies.
Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, for instance, is vehemently opposed to the agreement and has demanded that Netanyahu promise to resume the war against Hamas after the first phase of the ceasefire as a condition of his party staying in the coalition.
Palestinians in Gaza reported heavy Israeli bombardment Thursday. In previous conflicts, both sides have stepped up military operations in the final hours before ceasefires as a way to project strength.
“We were expecting that the (Israeli) occupation would intensify the bombing, like they did every time there were reports of progress in truce talks,” said Mohammed Mahdi, who was sheltering in Gaza City.
Gaza’s Health Ministry said the toll of 72 from Thursday’s strikes only included bodies brought to two hospitals in Gaza City and the the number killed was likely higher.
“Yesterday was a bloody day, and today is bloodier,” said Zaher al-Wahedi, a Health Ministry official.
The Israeli military said it had struck approximately 50 militant targets across the Gaza Strip over the past day, including weapons storage facilities and rocket launch sites.
Anxiety spread across Gaza on Thursday with the news of last-minute quarreling between Hamas and Israeli officials.
“We ask our brothers in Hamas to communicate with mediators to end the war,” said Omar Jendiya, in Deir al-Balah. “Enough with the destruction and killing.”
Under the deal reached Wednesday, 33 of some 100 hostages who remain in Gaza are set to be released over the next six weeks in exchange for hundreds of Palestinians imprisoned by Israel. Israeli forces will pull back from many areas, hundreds of thousands of Palestinians would be able to return to what’s left of their homes, and there would be a surge of humanitarian assistance.
The remainder of the hostages, including male soldiers, are to be released in a second — and much more difficult — phase that will be negotiated during the first. Hamas has said it will not release the remaining captives without a lasting ceasefire and a full Israeli withdrawal, while Israel has vowed to keep fighting until it dismantles the group and to maintain open-ended security control over the territory.
U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s Mideast envoy joined the talks in the final weeks, and both the outgoing administration and Trump’s team took credit for the breakthrough.
Longer-term questions about postwar Gaza remain, including who will rule the territory or oversee the daunting task of reconstruction.
Israel has come under heavy international criticism, including from its closest ally, the United States, over the civilian toll in Gaza. It also blames Hamas for the civilian casualties, accusing it of using schools, hospitals and residential areas for military purposes.
Hamas has come under overwhelming pressure from Israel’s invasion of Gaza’s largest cities and towns and seizure of the border between Gaza and Egypt. Its top leaders, including Yahya Sinwar, who was believed to have helped mastermind the 2023 attack, have been killed.
But its fighters have regrouped in some of the hardest-hit areas after the withdrawal of Israeli forces, raising the prospect of a prolonged insurgency if the war continues.

After days of intense fighting and airstrikes, an Israel-Hamas ceasefire has finally been reached. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that a deal has been made to release hostages held by Hamas in exchange for a cessation of hostilities.
The agreement comes after weeks of deadly clashes between Israeli forces and Hamas militants, which have left dozens dead and hundreds injured. The release of hostages is seen as a major breakthrough in the conflict, which has threatened to escalate into a full-blown war.
Netanyahu expressed his hope that the ceasefire would hold and bring an end to the violence that has gripped the region. He also thanked international mediators for their efforts in brokering the deal.
The release of hostages is a positive development in the Israel-Hamas conflict, but many challenges still remain. The underlying issues that have fueled the violence, including the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories and the blockade of Gaza, must be addressed in order to achieve lasting peace in the region.
As the ceasefire takes effect, the world will be watching closely to see if this agreement can pave the way for a more comprehensive and lasting peace between Israel and Hamas. Only time will tell if this latest development will bring an end to the cycle of violence that has plagued the region for decades.
