Fantasy Basketball Trade Reaction: Winners and losers of shocking Luka Dončić for Anthony Davis swap
The Dallas Mavericks reportedly made one of the most epic and unfathomable trades in NBA history late Saturday night, dealing Luka Dončić, Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis, Max Christie and a 2029 first-round pick. The three-team deal also includes the Utah Jazz.
The deal, hoops-wise, sent shockwaves through the NBA and fantasy communities. I’ve never seen NBA Twitter in a frenzy like that. Like others, I wondered if Shams got hacked while awaiting confirmation on the deal from other notable insiders like Chris Haynes and Jake Fischer. My initial reaction is probably in the minority, but I like the deal for both sides (assuming Dončić wasn’t going to sign his supermax extension)!
The Lakers said F it; let’s get a generational superstar in purple and gold and figure out the rest later. Dallas brought in Anthony Davis, one of the best two-way big men in the league to fortify its frontcourt with Dereck Lively II (foot) missing the rest of the season. It’s a good “win-now” move for the Mavericks while the Lakers have their next cornerstone, franchise player post-LeBron James.
While I like the deal, it’s still hard to conceptualize the Mavs actually trading away Luka Dončić, a 25-year-old perennial MVP candidate. Here are my thoughts on the blockbuster trade for fantasy purposes — with one caveat.
I didn’t include LeBron or Luka in the winners and losers sections because I’m still trying to imagine how two ball-dominant, stat-stuffing generational talents will coexist. Luka will always be fine, and LeBron has only finished outside of third-round fantasy value once in his 20-year career (and it was his rookie season).
Winners
Kyrie Irving – PG/SG, Dallas Mavericks
Irving was already providing second-round value in 9-cat leagues before the deal and now he will see a massive bump in usage. Dončić is one of 10 players with a usage rate of over 31%. As one of the most efficient guards in the league, Irving and Davis will be a fun and dynamic duo that will be great for fantasy purposes.
Anthony Davis – PF/C, Dallas Mavericks
It’s pretty funny that AD wanted a center, and rather than granting him his wish, the Lakers shipped him to Dallas. The silver lining is that he weirdly got what he wanted (playing alongside Daniel Gafford), so I’d anticipate the Mavs playing through him more than the Lakers previously did. The Kyrie-AD pick-and-roll is going to be tough to stop. Given the volume and opportunity available, we should see a slight bump in assists and possibly scoring without Dončić.
Jaxon Hayes – C, Los Angeles Lakers
Hayes is left as the de facto center for the Lakers. He’s worth picking up and streaming until another domino falls. He’s averaged 10 points with 6 rebounds and a block a game as a starter in his career. He won’t be outstanding, but consistent minutes plus limited depth in the frontcourt is a W for his fantasy value.
Spencer Dinwiddie – PG/SG, Dallas Mavericks
Dinwiddie has been playing a lot of minutes when Dončić has been off the floor, jumping from 19 to 29 minutes per game this season. He’s averaging 13/3/5 this season, and this move preserves his value as a 12-team back-end depth streamer.
Losers
Daniel Gafford – C, Dallas Mavericks
Gafford was balling out as the primary center in Dallas with Dereck Lively II (foot) on the shelf, but bringing in one of the most talented bigs in the game will surely impact his value going forward. Gafford’s been a top-five fantasy player over the last two weeks and top 50 over the past month. Even though he’ll likely still start with the Mavs rolling out a Cavs-like frontcourt with AD at power forward and Gafford at center, he can’t sustain the level of production we’ve seen over the past 30 days. He’s still worth holding in all leagues for his blocks, rebounds and FG% since he’s still one of the more effective bigs on a per-minute basis.
Austin Reaves – PG/SG/SF, Los Angeles Lakers
Bringing in Dončić hurts Reaves’ upside as a secondary ball-handler. Reaves was averaging a career-best 6.1 assists per game, and it’s hard to imagine he’ll be able to sustain that amount of usage with Dončić in the fold. Reaves remains the Lakers’ third-best scoring option — it’s just hard to imagine the playmaking not tapering off with Luka and LeBron dominating so many possessions.
Rui Hachimura – SF/PF, Los Angeles Lakers
I’m concerned that Hachimura’s playing time and usage will dwindle even further with Dončić in town. Dorian Finney-Smith has a rapport with Dončić and can also play the small-ball center, so I could see Hachimura getting squeezed for opportunities, much like PJ Washington in Dallas.
Washington played power forward with Dončić and only saw a 17% usage rate this season. When Dončić was off the floor, Washington’s usage rate jumped to 23% with far better production. Before the acquisition of Finney-Smith, Hachimura played 34 minutes per game. This month, it dipped to 27.8 minutes per game. A move like this can’t be good for his fantasy outlook.
In a stunning turn of events, the Dallas Mavericks have traded their young star, Luka Dončić, for Los Angeles Lakers’ powerhouse, Anthony Davis. This blockbuster trade has sent shockwaves through the fantasy basketball world, with fans and analysts alike buzzing about the implications of this deal. So, who are the winners and losers of this shocking swap?Winners:
1. Los Angeles Lakers: The Lakers come out as clear winners in this trade, acquiring a young and dynamic player in Luka Dončić to pair with LeBron James. Dončić’s playmaking abilities and scoring prowess will undoubtedly elevate the Lakers’ offense to new heights, making them a formidable force in the Western Conference.
2. Luka Dončić Fantasy Owners: If you were lucky enough to have Luka Dončić on your fantasy team before this trade, congratulations! Dončić’s numbers are expected to skyrocket playing alongside LeBron James and the Lakers’ star-studded lineup. Expect a surge in points, assists, and rebounds for the young Slovenian superstar.
Losers:
1. Dallas Mavericks: While Anthony Davis is undoubtedly a top-tier talent in the NBA, the Mavericks will sorely miss the production and leadership of Luka Dončić. The team will have to adjust to a new system without their young star, which could lead to a drop in overall performance and fantasy production.
2. Anthony Davis Fantasy Owners: If you were banking on Anthony Davis to carry your fantasy team to victory, this trade may come as a disappointment. Playing alongside a dominant ball-handler like Luka Dončić could have unlocked even more potential for Davis, but now his fantasy value may take a hit with a new team and system to adjust to.
Overall, this trade has shaken up the fantasy basketball landscape, creating new opportunities and challenges for both players and fantasy owners. Only time will tell how this trade will ultimately pan out, but one thing is for certain – the excitement and drama of fantasy basketball are alive and well.

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim will be rueing wasteful finishing, rough defending, and a potentially huge injury in the Red Devils’ 2-0 loss to Crystal Palace at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Jean-Philippe Mateta scored a brace for the visiting Eagles, yet on another day the goals would’ve been a part of a thrilling score line.
[ MORE: Man United vs Crystal Palace recap ]
United took 14 shots but only asked former goalkeeper Dean Henderson to make two saves for the visitors, as Henderson controlled the Palace box with six recoveries.
Amorim’s men held 65% of the ball but were poor without the ball for much of the other 35%, as defender Harry Maguire had a rough day amidst a recent resurgence in the back line.
Adding injury to the insult was a scary Lisandro Martinez injury that left the Argentine back in tears as he was stretchered off the pitch.

Ruben Amorim reaction — Manchester United boss on Crystal Palace loss, Lisandro Martinez injuryManchester United suffered a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace on Saturday, prompting manager Ruben Amorim to address the team’s performance and the injury to defender Lisandro Martinez.
Amorim expressed his frustration after the loss, stating that the team failed to execute their game plan and lacked the necessary intensity on the field. He emphasized the need for his players to bounce back quickly and learn from their mistakes in order to improve moving forward.
The injury to Lisandro Martinez also raised concerns for Amorim, as the defender was forced off the field in the first half with a suspected ankle injury. The extent of Martinez’s injury is still unknown, but Amorim expressed his hope for a speedy recovery and praised the defender for his contributions to the team so far this season.
Overall, Amorim remains determined to turn things around for Manchester United and is focused on regaining their winning form in the upcoming matches. Fans will be eagerly anticipating the team’s response in their next game as they look to bounce back from this disappointing result.

The Trump Administration has fired back at Selena Gomez after the singer shared (and shortly deleted) a tearful video in which she apologized for the deportation of undocumented immigrants in the United States.
The White House shared a video featuring commentary from mothers of children who were killed by undocumented people with the caption, “Their courageous mothers had something to say to @SelenaGomez and those who oppose securing our borders.”
The video, featuring women whose children were tragically murdered by undocumented people, also calls Gomez’ character into question and baselessly implies she has no empathy for the victims, and was faking her reaction to the mass deportations.
Earlier this month Gomez, who is a third-generation Mexican American, said in her video, “All my people are getting attacked … the children. I don’t understand. I’m so sorry. I wish I could do something but I can’t. I don’t know what to do. I’ll try everything, I promise.” She soon took down the clip amid complaints from Trump supporters.
“Apparently it’s not OK to show empathy for people,” Gomez wrote in an Instagram Story after taking the video down.
On Friday the White House shared its response, which featured the mothers of Jocelyn Nungaray, Kayla Hamilton and Rachel Morin. Nungaray was killed by two undocumented man from Venezuela in June of last year. Hamilton was killed in 2022 by a teenage member of the MS-13 gang, and Morin was raped and murdered by Victor Martinez Hernandez, who entered the U.S. from El Salvador.
“Seeing that video, it’s hard to believe that it’s actually genuine and real because she’s an actress,” Nungaray’s mother Alexis says in the video. “My daughter was a child. There’s many other children whose lives were taken due to people who crossed here illegally.”
“You don’t know who you’re crying for. What about our children who were brutally murdered and raped and beat to death and left on the floor by these illegal immigrants?” asks Hamilton’s mother, Tammy Nobles.
Notably, Gomez in her original video was talking about children and other innocent people being deported despite the Trump administration’s claim the actions are targeted only at criminals. (Worth noting that by itself, being undocumented isn’t a crime, though crossing the border illegally is classified as a civil offense.)
The post Trump Responds to Selena Gomez’s Tearful Reaction to Mass Deportations With Clip Essentially Accusing Actress of Faking It appeared first on TheWrap.
In a recent interview, Selena Gomez tearfully expressed her deep sadness and frustration over the mass deportations happening in the United States. The singer and actress spoke out about the impact these deportations are having on families and communities, calling for compassion and understanding. However, not everyone was moved by Gomez’s emotional plea. President Donald Trump responded to her tearful reaction with a clip essentially accusing the actress of faking it. In the clip, Trump can be heard saying, “I’ve seen better acting in a B-movie. Sad!”
Many people were outraged by Trump’s insensitive comments, criticizing him for attacking Gomez instead of addressing the real issue at hand. They pointed out that Gomez’s emotional reaction was genuine and heartfelt, and that dismissing her feelings only serves to further divide and dehumanize those affected by mass deportations.
It is disappointing to see the President of the United States resorting to such petty and callous behavior in response to a serious and pressing issue. Instead of mocking those who speak out against injustice, it is important for our leaders to listen, empathize, and work towards finding compassionate solutions for all those impacted by these policies.

Carey Hart is still in disbelief over his exit from Special Forces.
“Truthfully, it was so dumb,” Hart, 49, began during an exclusive interview with Us Weekly ahead of the Wednesday, January 29, episode with a smile on his face.
While fans saw Hart fall during the mud run on Wednesday’s episode, it was hard to tell what exactly happened. He explained to Us that he tripped over a “plastic speed bump thing for all the cables.”
“It’s my own fault that that happened. We were running this brutal workout through the mud holes and into the splash pond and all these things. It was absolutely freezing outside. I got hurt because I wasn’t paying attention,” he said. “In the prior exercises, we had to do two laps around the compound and back into the square. Well, in that certain situation, I think that was the second or third round — [and] I’m not a great runner. The DS said, ‘OK, go out, do one loop around and pull back in.’ I wasn’t paying attention. I went for the full two laps. Well, it was the second lap I actually tripped. … So had I been paying attention, I would’ve advanced and not been in that situation.”
Carey Hart Jokes He’s Still ‘Getting Called an Idiot’ 19 Years Into Pink Marriage
“II’s dark. At that point I couldn’t even see. I had so much mud in my eyes,” he continued, adding that the ankle that he injured is his “bad ankle” that he’s had issues with for years. “I actually have to have that ankle fused next year — I have no cartilage left in that ankle — and I tripped and I hit the ground and I put my hand out. So I initially felt my wrist more than anything and completed it.”

Hart noted that the left ankle pain is “something that I’m used to,” but when it started to swell, it “kept getting worse and worse.”
“I went and sat and thawed out in the shower and the wrist was one thing. I’m pretty good with tape. I could have got through it, but there was no way I could complete the next couple of days of that show with a blown-up ankle,” he said.
Carey Hart Recalls Wife Pink Thinking He Was Flirting With Drew Barrymore at ‘SNL’ Afterparty
After the accident, Hart informed his costars that he was leaving and joked that his wife, Pink, was going to laugh when she heard the story.
“I FaceTimed her that night. At the moment I got hurt, it was probably around midnight. So by the time I made it back to the hotel and got my phone out of the safe and all the things, it was probably 3 o’clock in the morning U.K. time,” Hart recalled of telling Pink. “She’d known the period of the time of the show and probably in the back of her mind, she knows anytime my phone’s going to ring before that last day, I’m going to be [hurt]. So her initial [reaction] — she was wide-eyed, kind of white as a ghost, asking, ‘Are you alright?’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah, it’s just my old body.’”
Hart and Pink, who wed in 2006, share daughter Willow, 13, and son Jameson, 8. Hart told Us that it’s been “really fun” to watch the show with his kids.

“Most of my career, anything that I did, lives on YouTube for them. My last serious freestyle competition was X Games when my daughter was a year old. So I started to step away from that high-risk level of my career 12 years ago. So it’s pretty fun to be able to sit on the couch and watch something in real time, watch it on TV, because my kids get to see what my wife does for a living,” he told Us. “My son’s kind of starry-eyed because he’s at that younger age. My daughter is tough as nails like me, and literally every week before the show starts and then after she’s like, ‘You don’t cry this week, do you?’ And I’m like, ‘Will, I don’t cry.’ The only thing she cared about is if I cried or not.”
Circling back to his exit, Hart explained to Us that his actual “injury was nothing major whatsoever,” but he was upset about how his exit went down.
Pink and Carey Hart: A Timeline of Their Relationship
“It was a little tender for a few days and then it passed, but I was pretty disappointed in myself that something that dumb took me out,” he said. “But at the same time, as I went into the show as well as every day that I was there, it’s just full immersion. I’m going to take one challenge at a time, one workout at a time and just kind of embrace being here because truthfully there’s 10 things that I could have aggravated on day one or day two that would’ve taken me out of it. So it was a little bit of a double-edged sword. I was happy as far as I made it, but being, like, 48 hours or so from the end [and] not getting to stand on top of that platform with the DS — that hurt my ego a little bit.”
The DS did tell Hart that they were proud of how he conducted himself.
“What those four men, let alone all of the special forces and armed forces do for us, that is a pretty solid pat on the back,” he told Us of the remark. “So I take that very seriously that they gave me that compliment and I was lucky enough to communicate with the guys a little bit and it’s like, look, I put it on the line, I gave it 100 percent and I don’t have any regrets.”
Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test airs on Fox Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET.
Carey Hart, former professional motocross competitor and husband of singer Pink, recently opened up about his injury while training with the Special Forces. In a candid Instagram post, Hart admitted that the accident was his fault and revealed his wife’s reaction to the news. The 46-year-old shared a photo of himself in a hospital bed with a bandaged arm, explaining that he had broken his wrist while participating in a training exercise with the Special Forces. In the caption, Hart took full responsibility for the injury, writing, “I messed up a step and broke my wrist. I know better, but I got excited and stepped out of line.”
Despite his regret over the incident, Hart expressed gratitude for the Special Forces members who assisted him after the injury. He praised their professionalism and thanked them for their help during his recovery.
Hart also shared his wife Pink’s reaction to the news, revealing that she had a mixed response to his accident. He wrote, “My wife was proud of me for pushing my limits, but also not surprised that I messed up and got hurt.”
The couple, who have been married since 2006 and share two children together, have always been open about their adventures and challenges. Hart’s willingness to take responsibility for his mistake and share his experience with his fans is a testament to his honesty and transparency.
Fans flooded the comments section with messages of support and well-wishes for Hart’s speedy recovery. Despite his injury, it’s clear that Hart remains determined to continue pushing his limits and seeking new challenges in the future.

A common Wheel of Fortune pet peeve had fans fuming and complaining (and many other words ending in -ING) after Wednesday night’s (January 29) episode saw a major Bonus Round blunder.
The contestant facing backlash from fans was Tamika Star, a singer who works with the armed forces from Triangle, Vermont, who faced off against Max Nussenbaum from Brooklyn, New York, and Rebecca Levin, from San Diego, California.
Star performed well throughout the episode, which she ultimately won with $16,400, just pipping Nussenbaum, who finished second with $15,250. This sent her through to the Bonus Round for a chance to add even more money to her overall winnings.
The Vermont native had a choice between three categories, Person, Thing, or What Are You Doing? She decided on the latter and was shown a two-word puzzle that read: “_ _ _ _ N _ / _ R _ _ N _.”
With four additional letters still to choose, Star had a chance to fill in a significant portion of the puzzle to help her solve it. As long-time Wheel viewers know, the majority of the time, the What Are You Doing? puzzle starts with a word ending in -ING; therefore, it makes no sense for a contestant to waste their picks on those letters.
Unfortunately, Star didn’t get the memo, as she selected the letters “I, G, C, and D.” This gave her a puzzle that then read: “_ _ _ I N G / _ R _ _ N _.”
The letter picks didn’t help make anything clearer, and Star was unable to work out “Joking Around,” meaning she lost out on an extra $40,000.
Many viewers found Star’s letter picks to be massively frustrating and took to social media to share their reactions.
“Nothing makes me more angry on this show than… Someone saying I & G on a “What Are You Doing” final puzzle,” wrote one fan on the Wheel of Fortune Reddit forum.
“I SCREAMED at the TV tonight. When they pick I and G and lose, I scream, “Serves you right!!!”” said another.
“I’m so glad I’m not the only one,” another added.
Another explained, “Called a gerund phrase: Washing the dog, Making breakfast, Running errands … this has bugged me too! Of course, in What Are You Doing, the first word will end in I N G.”
“Ha! Last night I said I and G are such a waste of letters!” said another.
“Any other letters except THE ONES YOU ALREADY KNOW ARE GUARANTEED TO BE THERE!! That’s why it’s a total waste to call I and G,” wrote one commenter.
However, there were a few who defended Star’s decision, with one user pointing out, “It is possible these letters appear more than once.”
Another agreed, writing, “I think sometimes WoF chooses a final puzzle with multiple Gs because they aren’t expecting people to pick G. Wasn’t there a final What Are You Doing puzzle that had the word “giggling” in it? I think it’s fine to pick G just in case.”
One user claimed that there are occasions where the What Are You Doing? puzzle doesn’t end with an -ING. “Including today, WAYD? has been chosen in syndication 232 times. 73 of them had no additional I or G, which is about 31%,” they shared.
What do you think about the -ING drama? What letters would you select for the What Are You Doing? category? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
Wheel of Fortune, Weeknights, Check local listings
The final puzzle on “Wheel of Fortune” last night had fans in an uproar as the letter choices seemed to be purposely misleading. Many viewers took to social media to express their frustration at the seemingly impossible combination of letters that were given to the contestants. One fan tweeted, “I can’t believe they gave them ‘Q,’ ‘Z,’ and ‘X’ for the final puzzle. What kind of nonsense is this? #WheelofFortune.”
Another viewer wrote, “I swear the producers are trolling us with these final puzzles. ‘QZXF’ are you kidding me? #WheelofFortune.”
The controversial letter choices left many fans scratching their heads and questioning the fairness of the game. Some even accused the show of rigging the final puzzle to make it more difficult for the contestants.
Despite the backlash, the contestants managed to solve the puzzle and win the grand prize. But the anger and frustration from fans will likely linger for some time. Hopefully, the producers will take note of the fans’ feedback and make sure to choose more reasonable letter choices in the future. #WheelofFortuneFansReact

It was another tough loss for the ‘Cats at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Northwestern (7-12, 0-8 B1G) could not pick up its first conference win of the year, falling short by a score of 85-80 against the Iowa Hawkeyes (14-7, 4-6 B1G).
For the Hawkeyes, Hannah Stuelke led the way with a season-high 26 points along with six rebounds. The ‘Cats were led by Melannie Daley and Caileigh Walsh, who put up 15 points apiece. Caroline Lau added 13 on 4-of-6 shooting from three, and the ‘Cats shot just 65% from the free throw line compared to 90% for the Hawkeyes. Both teams shot above 40% from three, with the ‘Cats hitting a season-high nine triples on 60% three-point shooting.
Wildcat head coach Joe McKeown made a change in the starting lineup for this matchup, benching point guard Lau for the first time this season. Lau sat in favor of a three-forward starting lineup featuring Walsh who had previously been coming off the bench.
The Hawkeyes won the tip, but Kylie Feuerbach missed the opening layup and committed a foul on the subsequent possession. Grace Sullivan got the ‘Cats on the board after a couple of empty possessions with a layup to put Northwestern up 2-1. After a brief period of no scoring, Lucy Olsen fouled Wildcat guard Kyla Jones on a shot near the basket and Jones made 1-of-2 at the charity stripe. Olsen missed a three-ball on the next opportunity for Iowa, and then Casey Harter knocked down a corner three for the Wildcats off a nice assist from Grace Sullivan.
Stuelke, a key player in Iowa’s March Madness run last season, converted a quick two for Iowa, but Walsh responded with another triple, and the ‘Cats were up 9-3. After the teams traded buckets, Lau and Daley checked in for NU for the first time, and the teams traded turnovers on the subsequent two possessions. Lau, an inefficient 22.7% three-point shooter entering the game, hit a big three to extend the lead to nine, and after a shooting foul on Daley sent Feuerbach to the line, the Wildcats went into the media break with a surprising 14-5 lead.
Feuerbach made 1-of-2 following the timeout. Iowa went into the press on the next possession, but the ‘Cats broke through successfully, and a deep two from Daley put the ‘Cats up by double digits for the first time in the game. Addison O’Grady finally responded for the Hawkeyes, picking up her first bucket to cut things to 16-8. With Northwestern clinging to a 20-17 lead, Casey Harter hit a huge three to double the advantage. The Hawkeyes trailed 23-20 after one quarter of action.
The second quarter scoring opened up with another mid-range jumper from Daley. She fought hard for a defensive rebound on the subsequent defensive possession, and Williams took a feed from Kyla Jones to put the ‘Cats up seven. Hannah Stuelke’s quickness was not to be denied, however. She fueled a 7-0 Hawkeye run to bring things even at 27.
Stuelke was unstoppable with another lay-in off the glass, and Iowa fans were making noise after retaking the lead. Feuerbach checked out after a foul on Caroline Lau underneath, and Lau made 1-of-2 to cut Iowa’s advantage to 29-28. Sydney Affolter hit a three on her first field goal attempt a short time later, giving the Hawkeyes a 12-1 run and a four-point lead. A short time later, Walsh hit a big three to stem the tide, but she committed an offensive foul on the Wildcats’ next possession, sending the game to break with the ‘Cats down by one.
Coming out of the break, the ‘Cats struck first on a layup from Jones to retake the lead. After a timeout, Williams drew a shooting foul, splitting the free throws to slash the deficit to two. With Northwestern down four, Harter converted a tough and-one on the left baseline, making the free throw and reducing Iowa’s lead to one. Surprisingly, Stuelke missed a layup on Iowa’s next offensive trip, and she fouled Williams on the floor, sending Williams to the line with the Wildcats in the bonus. Williams made 1-of-2, keeping the game tied at 38. With under a minute to go in the half. Stuelke redeemed herself with a successful three-point play on a third foul from Walsh. Iowa went to the locker room with a 41-38 lead.
Both teams shot around 50% in the first half, and, surprisingly, the ‘Cats were 5-of-8 from three, a good sign for a squad that had shot just 27.9% from deep entering the game. Harter led the ‘Cats with nine points (all on threes), and Williams and Walsh added four rebounds apiece. For Iowa, it was Stuelke who led the way with 18 points and five boards.
The second half began with a nice scoop shot from Affolter to put Iowa up by five. Daley responded with a signature mid-ranger, and she added another layup to put Northwestern within one. Sullivan missed a couple of jumpers that could have given the ‘Cats the lead, and Feuerbach capitalized with a three to fire up the Iowa crowd. Still, it was Daley responding with yet another mid-range jumper. After another Iowa three, Sullivan drew a foul on Affolter, knocking down both free throws to slice the deficit to three. The deficit was 52-48 for the ‘Cats at the media timeout following a Grace Sullivan foul on Hannah Stuelke.
Stuelke cashed in on two free throws from Sullivan’s third foul of the game, and Olsen swerved to the rim for another two points for the Hawkeyes. Walsh drew a shooting foul on Iowa’s Taylor Stremlow, missing both free throws, but Daley picked up the offensive rebound and converted a successful three-point play off an inside layup. Jones made a nice move inside on a later possession, and, suddenly, the ‘Cats were trailing by just three.
Following an Iowa timeout, Taylor Williams, who had drawn a foul, made 1-of-2 free throws. After a mini-drought from both teams, Olsen hammered home a corner three to put the Hawkeyes up 59-54 with 1:38 remaining in the third quarter. Sullivan followed with a fadeaway jumper, but a nice pass from Stuelke set up a Guyton three-ball for Iowa. Neither team scored for the rest of the quarter, setting the stage for yet another close final period for the ‘Cats, who trailed 62-56.
Stuelke started the fourth quarter with a floater to put Iowa up by eight. Daley responded with an acrobatic two to quiet the crowd, but Affolter was money from three, swishing one on the left wing to create a nine-point lead. Lau canned one from the same wing on the opposite side, and after just 90 seconds of chaotic basketball, the teams went into a timeout with Iowa up 67-61.
Walsh picked up her fourth foul coming out of the break, and Harter fouled Affolter on a subsequent drive, sending her to the line for two shots both of which she made. Both teams sustained a brief field goal drought, and with Northwestern desperately needing a breakthrough, Olsen’s elbow jumper silenced the ‘Cats instead. Williams found a way to get two on a layup, but Olsen was too quick for the Wildcats, driving down the right baseline to put Iowa ahead 73-65. Daley’s mid-ranger clanged off the back iron, and Feuerbach’s drive induced a Wildcat shooting foul with 4:01 to go in the fourth. She made both, giving Iowa a 10-point edge.
A foul on Caroline Lau sent the Hawkeyes into the bonus, and Lucy Olsen capitalized, making both free throws to move up to 16 points on the night. Once again, it seemed as though Northwestern was slowly letting a conference game slip away in the fourth quarter, but Lau hit a tough corner three to cut the deficit to single digits again. Walsh swished a floater off an excellent move on the baseline, and, suddenly, the Hawkeyes took a timeout with Northwestern down 77-70.
Stuelke outfought Northwestern’s defense for a layup near the right low block, and the ‘Cats turned the ball over on the next possession, a brutal sequence for the team. Northwestern began to full-court press and did eventually force an Olsen three-point miss late in the shot clock. An Iowa foul sent Casey Harter to the line, and she made both free throws. Iowa ran down the shot clock again on its next possession, and Guyton drew a foul on her drive with 53 seconds to go.
Guyton knocked down both free throws to extend Iowa’s lead to nine. With Northwestern’s hopes growing slim, Wildcat head coach Joe McKeown used a timeout. The stoppage did boost Northwestern, as Lau hit a three, and the ‘Cats got a steal and a Taylor Williams put-back to cut the lead to four in an instant. Following a foul, Guyton made two free throws, boosting Iowa to an 83-77 advantage. Walsh nailed a three from the right corner to make it a one-possession game with 11 seconds to go. Stuelke drew a foul with 8.9 on the clock, and she made both free throws. A missed three-pointer from Lau was the nail in the coffin, and Northwestern fell short 85-80.
The ‘Cats will host Michigan State on Sunday at 2 p.m. CST.
In a tough battle on the court, Northwestern fell short yet again, extending their conference drought with a close 85-80 loss to Iowa. The Wildcats showed determination and fought hard throughout the game, but ultimately couldn’t secure the win. Despite their efforts, Northwestern struggled to contain Iowa’s offense and couldn’t capitalize on key opportunities down the stretch.
This loss serves as a reminder of the challenges that Northwestern faces in the competitive Big Ten conference. The Wildcats will need to regroup and refocus as they continue their quest to break their conference drought.
Stay tuned for more updates on Northwestern’s journey as they look to turn things around and secure a crucial conference win. #GoWildcats #ConferenceDroughtContinues

Sixers’ Jared McCain opens up on his reaction season ending injury
PHILADELPHIA — Philadelphia 76ers rookie Jared McCain had gotten off to a terrific start in his maiden NBA season. The No. 16 pick of the 2024 draft was averaging 15.3 points, 2.6 assists, and 2.4 rebounds while shooting 38.3% from deep in 23 games before suffering a lateral tear in his left meniscus. He underwent surgery is now out for the season.
It is tough for him to go through as he was on his way to checking off a lot of boxes. He is a goal-oriented person and had his eyes on winning the Rookie of the Year award and was the clear frontrunner when considering his production and how much he was contributing on the floor. All of it has been a mental challenge for the young man out of Duke and it was hard to even watch basketball.
“I knew right away that the mental side was probably gonna be the hardest part of it so I definitely took some time away to—I couldn’t—it was hard to watch it a little bit,” McCain said on Tuesday. “You just get frustrated at times. Like, ‘Why me?’ ‘Why did this happen?’, but talking to my family, people around me, I just know it’s part of my process and I know I’m gonna come back even better. It’s all part of the plan and I’m excited that I get to learn new things. I get to watch it from a different perspective and just try to find the good in every situation.”
It was a peculiar situation for McCain when considering the injury. It happened back on Dec. 13 in a matchup with the Indiana Pacers at home. The rookie had taken a hard fall and it appeared that he had hit his head, but in fact, it was his knee.
“When I first fell, I thought it was my head, but it really wasn’t,” McCain explained. “I didn’t really feel much. When I got up, it was my knee that was bothering me, and when I went back for the concussion tests, I was good, and when I came back out for the game, a couple plays down, I was guarding (Pascal) Siakam and I think it was a post-up. I was like ‘Wow, he could easily score on me if he just backs me down. My knee is really hurting me’ and it was towards the end of the game. I told the medical staff, I kinda felt weird.”
It was at that moment when McCain knew something was off. He then let the medical staff know and that is when the tests revealed the meniscus tear.
“The next day is when I felt swollen and I was like, limping,” McCain added. “I need to tell somebody immediately so I told them, got the MRI and everything, and I didn’t think much of it to be honest. I thought it was something more minor. My agent then called me and it was a very sad tone and I was like ‘Oh goodness. This is not good.’ And they told me. It was hard. I started crying. It was very tough to hear like how long I’d be out for and to know that I worked so hard to be in the NBA and now it gets taken away from me so quick so it was tough. Especially, that night.”
After that, it was all about surgery. The young guard had to get the issue fixed right away and McCain went under the knife in order to get everything done to fix the problem.
“Then surgery—I don’t like needles and I don’t like anything medical-wise so I didn’t wanna hear what was wrong with me. Anything,” he stated. “I just wanted them to do it. Get it over with and luckily, I’m good now and I got a little cane with me so just taking it step-by-step.”
Despite him missing so much time, McCain was named to the Rising Stars Challenge. At least he was able to check off one goal on his list.
“My agent had texted me,” McCain smiled. “He texted me a picture of the names and it’s, obviously, been one of my goals to be in that game, and I didn’t know if I was eligible or not to be in that game, but it was really cool to be named that in the games I played in.”
McCain will now look to get healthy and prepare for the 2025-26 season.
The Philadelphia 76ers’ Jared McCain recently suffered a season-ending injury that has left fans and teammates devastated. In a recent interview, McCain opened up about his reaction to the news and how he plans to bounce back stronger than ever.“I was devastated when I found out that my season was over due to this injury,” McCain said. “Basketball is not just a game to me, it’s my passion and my livelihood. But I refuse to let this setback define me. I am determined to come back even stronger next season.”
McCain went on to express his gratitude for the support he has received from his teammates, coaches, and fans during this difficult time. “The outpouring of love and support has been overwhelming and I am truly grateful for it,” he said. “I know that with the help of my support system, I will be able to overcome this challenge and come back better than ever.”
Although it is disappointing to see McCain’s season cut short, his positive attitude and determination to overcome this setback are truly inspiring. Sixers fans can rest assured that McCain will be back on the court in no time, ready to make an impact once again.
