In the final days before Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans, local, state and federal officials have described a dash to beef up security plans that were robust even before a New Year’s Day terrorist attack unleashed anguish and alarm in the city.
One of the most visible changes is the “enhanced security zone” around Bourbon Street, the site of the deadly ramming attack and a hive of activity when the Super Bowl is in town. Gov. Jeff Landry of Louisiana created the zone using an emergency order, which also allows law enforcement officers to search the bags of people entering the area and deny entry to anyone who refuses, officials said.
New steel barriers have also been installed to thwart other potential ramming attacks; the barriers were added partly out of concern that a new bollard system that was in the works before the attack was not strong enough to stop speeding trucks. No bollards were in place on Bourbon Street when the attack happened.
Even before the New Year’s mayhem, the security measures planned for the Super Bowl reflected the kind of vast and layered response that has become the default for an event of this magnitude — one that took months of coordination and drew upon years of experience.
But in recent weeks, officials have repeatedly sought to reassure residents and visitors by describing how they had re-evaluated and tweaked those plans after a man plowed into a crowd on Bourbon Street. Fourteen people were killed and dozens more were injured in the attack, roughly a mile from the football stadium.
The blocks around the stadium, Caesar’s Superdome, have turned into a maze of barricades, fences and closed roads. About 2,000 law enforcement officers will be deployed this weekend — many in uniform, and many others working covertly. There are also checkpoints, armed National Guard troops and drones and helicopters constantly hovering overhead.
“It’s been a whirlwind,” said Collin Arnold, the city’s director of homeland security and emergency preparedness. “This last month has been very, very busy, but we’re ready. This city is ready.”
Even for a city well accustomed to tourism, conventions and major cultural events, the stakes posed by the Super Bowl are unrivaled. The event is projected to bring more than 125,000 people to New Orleans in the coming days, including the highest-profile celebrities, athletes and business leaders. White House officials said this week that President Trump was planning to attend.
“The biggest show on earth is going to go off without a hitch,” Mr. Landry said at a briefing on Monday.
At the same briefing, Kristi Noem, the federal homeland security secretary, said that there were “no specific, credible threats” regarding the Super Bowl. She joined Mr. Landry and a parade of law enforcement officials who urged a reasonable amount of caution but also stressed that the preparations were comprehensive.
The message was meant to ease the disquiet stirred by the attack on New Orleans’s most famous street.
Investigators said the attack had been carried out by a 42-year-old U.S. Army veteran from Texas who claimed to have joined the Islamic State terrorist organization, known as ISIS. He left two improvised explosive devices in coolers on the street in the French Quarter before he drove a rented pickup into a crowd at about 3:15 on New Year’s morning.
The attacker, Shamsud-Din Jabbar, was killed in a shootout with the police that also injured two officers.
The carnage infused pain into what was supposed to be a season of revelry, coming before the parties and parades that lead up to Mardi Gras. The Sugar Bowl, the college football game played in New Orleans every January, was delayed by a day because of the attack. The city is also preparing for the Jazz and Heritage Festival that begins in April.
“We have worked tirelessly to ensure the security and safety of this city remains intact,” said Mr. Landry, a Republican, who added that coming to New Orleans — and enjoying it — was an important display of defiance in the aftermath of terror.
New Orleans’s history with the Super Bowl is almost as old as the event itself. The Kansas City Chiefs beat the Minnesota Vikings, 23-7, during Super Bowl IV at Tulane Stadium in 1970. The Super Bowl returned nine times between 1972 and 2013. On Sunday, when the Chiefs face the Philadelphia Eagles, New Orleans will tie Miami for hosting the most Super Bowls, 11.
Of all the logistical challenges that come with hosting the event, security is perhaps the biggest and most complicated. Mr. Arnold said that representatives from New Orleans had embedded at the two most recent games, in Las Vegas and Glendale, Ariz., to fully grasp all it entails. “It’s a tall order to put on something like this,” he said.
The Super Bowl is classified by the Department of Homeland Security as a level one event, meaning it has major national and international significance and requires extensive federal support.
It draws in officers from the New Orleans Police Department and other local departments, the Louisiana State Police, the F.B.I. and other federal agencies. Their presence is concentrated at the Superdome, the New Orleans convention center and the sites of related events nearby.
“The safest place to be this weekend will be under the security umbrella this team has put together,” said Cathy L. Lanier, the chief security officer for the National Football League and a former police chief in Washington, D.C.
But local officials acknowledged that their concerns extended beyond Super Bowl weekend. Mr. Arnold said the festivities surrounding Mardi Gras — with dozens of parades winding through the city and crowds pouring into the French Quarter — will in some ways be harder to safeguard than the Super Bowl.
This year, Homeland Security officials have also ranked Mardi Gras, which was previously regarded as a lower-tier regional event, as a level one event for the first time, allowing for more federal resources. A free app being rolled out for the Super Bowl called NOLA Ready will also be available during Mardi Gras and beyond; it allows users to quickly report an emergency to the authorities, share their locations with friends and get traffic and safety information.
The state has also used Mr. Landry’s emergency order to justify clearing homeless encampments near the Superdome ahead of the game. Critics have argued that the move was less about security than making sure the people living in tents were nowhere near Super Bowl tourists and television cameras, disrupting lives and routines in the process. The dozens who were displaced could choose to be taken to a temporary shelter away from the city center that promised access to resources, room for pets and shuttles to ferry people to work and appointments.
In the enhanced security zone in the French Quarter, ice chests and backpack coolers are forbidden. But state law still permits people to carry concealed guns into the zone, even though shootings have been a persistent problem in the French Quarter.
The additional measures that have been undertaken by the state since the attack and will continue through Mardi Gras are anticipated to cost about $52 million, officials said.
There have been some bumps when New Orleans hosted the Super Bowl before, like in 2013, when the lights in the Superdome went out for 34 minutes during the game. But even ahead of Sunday’s game, some city leaders were already contemplating the possibility of hosting for the 12th time.
“The track record, I think, speaks for itself,” said Anne Kirkpatrick, the city’s police superintendent.
New Orleans is often praised for its resilience, which officials brought up again this week. It is a source of uneasy pride for residents who have weathered hurricanes and extreme heat, the punishing toll of the coronavirus pandemic and a surge in violence that has recently dissipated.
In the most stressful moments, reflecting on past hardships and how the city had persevered can provide some solace.
“We bounce back,” Mr. Arnold said, “and I think that’s going to be the case here.”
After the recent attack in New Orleans, the city is left rattled but determined to carry on with its world-famous Mardi Gras celebrations. Despite the tragic event, residents and officials are coming together to ensure that this year’s festivities will go on as planned.
The attack has brought a sense of fear and uncertainty to the city, but New Orleans is no stranger to adversity. The resilient spirit of the people, combined with the unwavering support of the community, is what will help them push through this difficult time.
As the city prepares for the “Biggest Show on Earth,” organizers are taking extra precautions to ensure the safety of all attendees. Increased security measures and heightened vigilance will be in place to prevent any further incidents.
Mardi Gras is more than just a celebration – it’s a symbol of New Orleans’ strength and resilience. The city may be rattled, but it is ready to show the world that nothing can dampen its spirit. Let the good times roll!
Cristiano Ronaldo turns 40 on Wednesday but is showing few signs of slowing down as he prepares to lead Saudi club Al-Nassr against Al-Wasl in the Asian Football Confederation’s Champions League Elite.
The Portuguese star, who signed for the Riyadh club in December 2022, leads the Saudi Pro League scoring charts with 15 goals in 17 games.
If Ronaldo can reproduce that form in the continental tournament — there are two games remaining in the group stage, from which his team has already qualified — then Al-Nassr has a chance to become Asian champion for the first time.
“The best birthday gift for Ronaldo is to achieve victory against Al-Wasl,” Al-Nassr coach Stefano Pioli said ahead of the Monday meeting. “It is an important match for us and we want the three points.”
After winning the UEFA Champions League five times with Manchester United and Real Madrid, Ronaldo’s chances of winning a first Asian title have been bolstered with Al-Nassr’s signing of Jhon Duran from English Premier League club Aston Villa for a reported fee of around USD 79 million last week.
According to reports in Saudi Arabia, Duran has already been registered in time to play against Al-Wasl of the United Arab Emirates. “Duran is in good shape,” Pioli said. “We will decide how best to use him.”
The team will certainly be without former Manchester City defender Aymeric Laporte, who is absent for personal reasons. There are also injury issues for another defender, Ali Lajami, as well as Portuguese midfielder Otavio.
Al-Nassr is in third place in the 12-team group, behind Saudi rivals Al-Hilal and Al-Ahli, both unbeaten after six games.
Al-Hilal has won four continental titles, more than any other Asian club. The Blues have lost Neymar ahead of their match against Persepolis of Iran. Brazil’s record scorer returned to South America last week after an injury-hit spell of just seven appearances in 18 months for Al-Hilal.
“We are looking forward to the game,” coach Jorge Jesus said. “Our ambitions are always to win at home and in Asia.”
Al-Ahli, with former English Premier League stars such as Riyad Mahrez and Ivan Toney, has the offensive strength to win the Champions League for the first time. The Jeddah club, currently second, heads to Qatar to take on Al-Sadd.
All 12 teams in the western zone — the tournament is split into two geographic halves until the quarterfinals — are in with a chance of finishing in the top eight and progressing to the knockout stage.
The eastern zone resumes next week.
The AFC Champions League is heating up as the 2024-25 season kicks off, and all eyes are on one player in particular – Cristiano Ronaldo. The footballing legend is set to make his debut in the prestigious tournament before celebrating his 40th birthday later this year.
Ronaldo, who is known for his incredible goal-scoring ability and unmatched work ethic, will be looking to lead his team to victory in the competition. Despite his age, the Portuguese superstar shows no signs of slowing down and continues to impress fans and critics alike with his performances on the pitch.
Having dominated European football for so many years, Ronaldo now has his sights set on conquering the Asian stage with his new team. With his wealth of experience and winning mentality, he is sure to be a force to be reckoned with in the AFC Champions League.
Fans around the world are eagerly anticipating Ronaldo’s debut in the tournament, and many are excited to see what he will bring to the table. Will he be able to lead his team to glory and add another trophy to his already impressive collection? Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure – Cristiano Ronaldo is ready for ACL action before his 40th birthday.

There are two key similarities between Alabama basketball coach Nate Oats and former Alabama football coach Nick Saban.
No.1, they both know how to dress, or at least understand that maintaining a classy image in public comes with the job and is a sign of respect for the people they represent.
This might seem trivial to some, but those are probably just the guys who think it’s OK to wear flannel shirts with dress slacks, flip-flops away from the beach, workout attire away from the gym, sweatpants in public, tactical pants to church, saggy jeans anywhere, camo, team jerseys outside of stadiums, tucked in T-shirts and square-toed shoes or boots.
Everyone else appreciates the fact that Oats isn’t the best dressed coach in college basketball by accident and that Saban (or at least Miss Terry) has impeccable fashion sense. Attention to detail matters all the way down to the buttons on the shirt.
Secondly — and this might be a little more important — Oats is like Saban in that he never wavers from the coaching ethos that winning is all that matters.
Too cutthroat? Maybe for some, but that’s one of the things that makes Oats good at his job.
Oats hasn’t turned Alabama basketball into a national contender by handing out participation trophies, which is why sitting point guard Mark Sears against LSU didn’t come as much of a surprise.
The broadcasters calling the game for ESPN made a big deal about Sears being on the bench, but it’s not the first time that Oats has kept Sears out of the rotation this season and it might not be the last either.
Maybe Oats was trying to send a message by putting his best offensive player on the bench, or maybe Alabama’s coach just wanted more length on defense for the second half. Either way, it was the right call. Alabama won and Oats even noted afterwards that it was some of the best defense Alabama had played all season to end a game.
Sears was back in the lineup on Wednesday against Mississippi State and led Alabama with 17 points, six rebounds and nine assists. Once again, though, Oats made the correct decision late in the game when he subbed out Mark Sears and Aden Holloway in favor of taller players.
If only the football coach at Alabama knew how to manage his team so effectively.
No.4 Alabama basketball (18-3, 7-1 in the SEC) returns to action on Saturday with a home game against Georgia. The Tide is one of the deepest teams in the country, and Oats is going to need it to finish out this season. The remaining schedule is like nothing I’ve ever seen. Ten games remain and Alabama’s final seven opponents are all currently ranked in the AP Top 25.
Alabama could make it all the way to the championship game of the NCAA Tournament and have an easier road.
No one has it easy in the SEC, of course. The league has never been better. Some are calling it the best conference in college basketball history. Maybe so. No.1 Auburn (19-1, 7-0) plays eight ranked opponents across its final 11 games. Tennessee, which has lost three of its last four games, is grinding through a stretch of nine ranked teams in its first 10 conference games.
Coach John Calipari left Kentucky for Arkansas this season, but the Hogs are only 1-6 in the SEC.
Lamont Paris won SEC Coach of the Year in 2024, but his South Carolina Gamecocks are 0-8 to begin conference play this season.
The toughest football conference in the country is now the best basketball conference, too. The SEC’s greatest February of hoops begins on Saturday, but that’s just a build up for the big finish.
With Auburn and Alabama one and two in the SEC standings, it looks like league bragging rights and the regular-season title will go through the Heart of Dixie. Alabama and Auburn play twice over the final three weeks of the season. It will be a test of mental toughness like this league has never seen.
In benching Sears, Oats made sure that his point guard would be ready for the fight. And if Sears needs a rest, well, Alabama’s cutthroat, win-first coach planned ahead by taking Auburn’s old point guard and making him better.
BE HEARD

Alabama football fans, get ready because the moment we’ve all been waiting for is finally here. The Crimson Tide is facing their biggest test of the season as they prepare to take on their toughest opponent yet.
With a perfect record so far this season, Alabama has shown they are a force to be reckoned with. But now, they will face their biggest challenge yet as they go head to head with a formidable opponent.
But fear not, Tide fans, because Alabama is ready. They have been training hard, perfecting their game plan, and building up their confidence to take on this tough opponent.
So get ready to cheer on the Crimson Tide as they face this big test. Let’s show our support and rally behind our team as they fight for victory. Roll Tide! #RollTide #AlabamaFootball #BigTest #ReadyForVictory

It was this time last year that Tiffany Stratton, then one of the top stars on NXT, was just hoping she’d receive a call to come to Tampa Bay and compete in the Women’s Royal Rumble as a surprise entrant.
What a difference 12 months has made as Stratton will gleefully sit back tonight with some popcorn and watch 30 other women battle it out for the right to face her at WrestleMania 41.
Tiffy’s time atop the SmackDown Women’s Division came in relatively short order. In just a matter of months Stratton went from a surprise Royal Rumble appearance to being a break-out performer inside the Elimination Chamber, to capturing the Money in the Bank briefcase and then successfully cashing in to win the WWE Women’s Championship.
Stratton told The Takedown on SI that it was while she was getting ready for Friday’s Royal Rumble Press Junket that she really allowed herself to reflect back on the past year of her career. Harkening back to that feeling of waiting for the phone to ring to see if she’d be competing in her first Royal Rumble to now being the woman that everyone else is hoping to face in Las Vegas.
“It’s so surreal and I could start crying [if she really sat and thought about how far she’s come]. I’m just super happy.”
Having the WWE Women’s Championship draped over her shoulder is going to allow Stratton to become one of the 65,000+ fans that expected to pack Lucas Oil Stadium tonight.
Three former Woman’s Royal Rumble winners and seven former Women’s Champions are among the field this year, including Bayley, Bianca Belair, IYO SKY, Nia Jax, Liv Morgan and Naomi. And those are just some of the names that we know will be in the match.
“There’s so many insane women that we have right now, and I feel like there’s so many different surprises that we can all look forward to. You never know who’s gonna be in it. I’m gonna have such a fun time just watching it.”
A returning Becky Lynch, someone whom Stratton is very familiar with, could be one of those surprises. Nikki Bella and Trish Stratus are two other names that have been circulating the rumor mill in recent days.
Then there’s the woman whose name I have omitted on purpose until just now.
Charlotte Flair has missed the last year of her career due to a devastating knee injury she suffered in a match with Asuka. The Queen’s announced return ahead of the Women’s Royal Rumble Match is giving off serious 2023 Cody Rhodes vibes. The American Nightmare’s victory that year came in his first match back from a torn pec muscle.
It’s not out of the realm of possibility that the same play that was called for WWE’s starting QB, is run once again for the 14-time Women’s Champion. Especially given all the recent reports of Flair being penciled in for a match with Tiffany Stratton at WrestleMania 41. Reports that the WWE Women’s Champion has read, by the way.
While Tiffany wouldn’t outright say she’s rooting for Charlotte to win tonight, she certainly wouldn’t shy away from the chance to go toe-to-toe with one of the greatest women’s competitors of all time.
“Honestly, I think we could have a banger match. I feel like that’s a given”, Tiffany said with confidence. “If it were me and Charlotte, I feel like we would probably have one of the best matches on the entire WrestleMania card. So, hopefully that happens. And if it does, I’m ready.”
It’s a match that would also mean a great deal to Stratton personally. If Charlotte Flair didn’t walk the path before her, then maybe there would be no Tiffany Stratton in WWE today.
On either April 19 or 20, the WWE Women’s Champion will compete in her first-ever match at WrestleMania. There would be no more fitting opponent for her than Charlotte Flair.
“It would be a generational match,” Stratton said. “I got into wrestling because of her. I saw her on an episode of SmackDown one day and she kind of inspired me to get into wrestling. It would just mean so much to my younger self if she would be my WrestleMania opponent.”
Tiffany Stratton Aware of Charlotte Flair WrestleMania Rumors; Ready For The Queen
It seems like the wrestling world is buzzing with rumors of a potential showdown between Tiffany Stratton and Charlotte Flair at WrestleMania. The up-and-coming starlet, Tiffany Stratton, has been making waves in the wrestling scene and her recent success has caught the attention of the Queen herself, Charlotte Flair.
With reports swirling about a possible match between the two at WrestleMania, Tiffany Stratton has made it clear that she is well aware of the rumors and is more than ready to step into the ring with Charlotte Flair. In a recent interview, she expressed her excitement at the prospect of facing off against one of the greatest female wrestlers of all time.
“I’ve always admired Charlotte Flair and I would be honored to share the ring with her at WrestleMania,” said Tiffany Stratton. “I know she’s a tough competitor, but I’m confident in my abilities and I believe I can give her a run for her money.”
As the anticipation builds for WrestleMania, fans are eagerly waiting to see if this dream match between Tiffany Stratton and Charlotte Flair will come to fruition. Will the young upstart be able to dethrone the Queen, or will Charlotte Flair prove once again why she is considered one of the best in the business?
One thing is for sure, if this match does happen, it will be one for the ages. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting potential showdown at WrestleMania.

Canada ready with ‘forceful, immediate’ response if US imposes tariffs, says Trudeau
Canada will respond immediately with a series of forceful countermeasures if Donald Trump goes ahead with a threat to impose tariffs, Canada’s prime minister Justin Trudeau said.
On Thursday, Trump repeated his threat to impose tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico that would begin at 25% and “may or may not rise with time”.
Trudeau, in remarks to a meeting of an advisory council on Canada-US relations, said:
If the president does choose to implement any tariffs against Canada, we’re ready with a response – a purposeful, forceful but reasonable, immediate response.
“It’s not what we want, but if he moved forward, we will also act,” Trudeau added.

Senate confirms Doug Burgum as interior secretary
The Senate confirmed the former North Dakota governor Doug Burgumas interior secretary late on Thursday.
The vote was 79-18, with the majority of Senate Democrats joining every Republican in voting for Burgum.
Burgum, a billionaire former businessman, was governor of North Dakota, the third largest oil and natural gas producer in the country, between 2016 and 2024.
As interior secretary, he will manage US federal lands including national parks and wildlife refuges, as well as oversee relations with 574 federally recognized Native American tribes.

Donald Trump has claimed that the military helicopter involved in the midair collision in Washington DC on Wednesday was flying too high at the time of the accident.
The Blackhawk helicopter was flying too high, by a lot. It was far above the 200 foot limit. That’s not really too complicated to understand, is it???
It is unusual for a president to weigh in like this, especially on social media, and suggest the cause of a collision, when officials have not yet revealed its cause and it remains under investigation by federal transportation authorities.

All 64 people on the passenger plane, along with the three people in the army helicopter, died on Wednesday night after the two aircraft crashed into each other in midair close to the Reagan National airport.
The bodies of more than 40 people had been recovered from the icy Potomac River by Friday morning, where the wreckage now lies.
Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro to meet with US envoy
Venezuela’s president Nicolás Maduro will meet with Richard Grenell, Donald Trump’s envoy for special missions, the country’s communications ministry has confirmed.
As we reported earlier, Grenell is expected to discuss deportation flights among other things during his trip to Venezuela.

What is a tariff?
A tariff is a tax on imports, or foreign goods brought into the United States.
Who pays for tariffs?
This is a question that many Americans asked after the election. Trump has said foreign countries pay for tariffs, but tariffs are actually paid by American companies that import goods from abroad.
So if an American car manufacturer is importing a part from Mexico, it will have to pay a tariff on the part once it arrives in the country.
Why is Trump threatening to levy tariffs?
The US imports more goods than its exports – the trade deficit. Not all economists agree that trade deficits are bad but Trump has railed against them for years and tariffs are his preferred tool to deal with them.
Tariffs became a big deal in 2018 during Trump’s first term when he levied tariffs on some products from China and on metal imports. He also threatened to put tariffs on imports from Mexico, in retaliation for the large number of migrants who were crossing the border at the time. Trump eventually backed down from the tariffs in 2020.
In other words, this is all a bit deja vu.
The way that tariffs work, in Trump’s mind, is that high tariffs will incentivize American companies to move their manufacturing from abroad to American shores.
“All you have to do is build your plant in the United States, and you don’t have tariffs,” Trump said just a few weeks before the election.
But getting out of the complex global manufacturing ecosystems is nearly impossible for many companies. It takes years to get a factory up and running, so even if a company theoretically wanted to bolster its domestic manufacturing to avoid tariffs, Trump’s term would likely be over by the time it was ready.
Have a question about tariffs? We’re here to help. Email callum.jones@theguardian.com and we’ll answer in a future story.
Peter Navarro, Donald Trump’s senior trade and manufacturing adviser, said he did not know whether the president will impose tariffs on Canada and Mexico.
“I have no breaking news for you on that,” Navarro told CNBC on Friday. “I can’t tell you when; I can talk a little about why.”
He said “one of the big reasons we think about tariffs, and that’s the fentanyl,” adding: “The boss wants to do something about that.”
JB Pritzker, the Democratic governor of Illinois, has been blocking people who took part in the January 6 attack on the Capitol from working in state jobs, NBC reports.
In a written directive to the state’s primary hiring authority, the department of central management services, obtained by the outlet, Pritzker wrote:
These rioters attacked law enforcement officers protecting people in the Capitol, disrupted the peaceful transfer of power, and undermined bedrock principles of American democracy. Our State workforce must reflect the values of Illinois and demonstrate honesty, integrity, and loyalty to serving the taxpayers. No one who attempts to overthrow a government should serve in government.

One of the US Capitol attackers pardoned by Donald Trump at the start of his second presidency has been handed a 10-year prison sentence for killing a woman in a drunk-driving crash, according to authorities.
Emily Hernandez served 30 days in federal prison after she joined the mob of Trump supporters who stormed the US Capitol on 6 January 2021 and was photographed holding the broken nameplate of Nancy Pelosi, the House speaker at the time.
She was among 1,500 people with roles in the Capitol uprising who received unconditional pardons from – or had their sentences commuted by – Trump on 20 January, but that clemency did not solve all of her legal problems.
Hernandez, 24, on Wednesday was sentenced to a decade in prison for getting into a car wreck while driving drunk on an interstate in Franklin county, Missouri, in 2022 and killing Victoria Wilson, court records first reviewed by NBC News show. Hernandez also injured Wilson’s husband, Ryan Wilson, with whom she had two sons.
Justin Trudeau, Canada’s prime minister, said his government has responded to what Donald Trump is “focused on and what is motiviating him to consider applying tariffs as early as tomorrow”.
“Our border is safe and secure,” Trudeau said at a meeting on Canada-US relations on Friday.
Right now, we’re showing the new American administration that they have a strong partner in Canada when it comes to upholding border security, all while simultaneously underscoring that we won’t back down, that if tariffs are implemented against Canada, we will respond. We won’t relent until tariffs are removed and, of course, everything is on the table.
“I won’t sugar coat it,” he added, warning that Canadians “could be facing difficult times in the coming days and weeks”.

Canada will respond immediately with a series of forceful countermeasures if Donald Trump goes ahead with a threat to impose tariffs, Canada’s prime minister Justin Trudeau said.

Jaime Harrison, the outgoing chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), has said the party should have stuck with Joe Biden in the 2024 presidential election.
Harrison, in an interview with Associated Press as his leadership comes to a close, said that Kamala Harris’s shortened campaign timeline may have damaged her electoral chances.
“Had she had more runway, it would have been probably easier for her and for the campaign. We were building a race for Joe Biden,” he said.
Asked whether he believed that Democrats should have stuck with Biden, Harrison said:
That’s my normal default, is that you stick by your people … My nature is, ‘I’m on the team with you, you’re my quarterback. You got sacked a few times. But you know what? I’m going to block the hell out of the next person that’s coming at you.’ And that is not always the mentality of everybody in my party.

The DNC is expected to elect a new chair on Saturday.
Richard Grenell, Donald Trump’s envoy for special missions, is expected to meet with Venezuela’s president, Nicolás Maduro, on Friday, CNN reports.
Grenell is expected to discuss deportation flights among other things during his trip to Venezuela, the outlet reports.
Grenell held secret talks in 2020 with one of Maduro’s closest allies, Jorge Rodríguez, who swore Maduro in for his third term in office earlier this month.
Trump’s appointment of Grenell has left some wondering if an agreement may be reached with Maduro involving the deportation of Venezuelan migrants from the US and access to Venezuela’s massive oil reserves for US companies in exchange for Washington accepting Maduro’s power grab.
Colombian president urges undocumented Colombians in the US to return ‘as soon as possible’
Colombia’s president Gustavo Petro has urged undocumented Colombians in the US to quit their jobs “immediately” and return to Colombia as soon as possible.
“Wealth is only produced by the working people,” Petro said on X. “Let’s build social wealth in Colombia.”
He added that the department of social prosperity would offer credits to returnees who enroll in its programs.

Donald Trump has been accused of launching an “attack on the rule of law” as three former heads of the top US labor watchdog criticized the unprecedented firing of a top official.
The abrupt removal of Gwynne Wilcox from the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) leaves the agency “out of business” unless a replacement is nominated, they warned – and highlights a “real danger” to the independence of regulators and adjudicators now Trump is back in the White House.
In interviews with The Guardian, previous chairs of the NLRB described the dismissal of Wilcox as a “usurpation” of power that “reeks of discriminatory motive”.
Donald Trump’s firing of NLRB general counsel Jennifer Abruzzo, left, and chairwoman Gwynne Wilcox has effectively paralyzed the agency. Composite: AP, NLRB
The White House blamed decisions taken by Wilcox and Jennifer Abruzzo, the NLRB’s general counsel, as it fired the pair earlier this week.
The move leaves the agency’s board with only two members, short of the quorum of three required to issue significant decisions on US labor disputes. Wilcox, the first Black woman to serve on the board, has pledged to pursue “all legal avenues” to challenge her firing.
Canada ready with ‘forceful, immediate’ response if Trump imposes tariffs
As tensions continue to escalate between the United States and Canada over trade issues, Canadian officials have made it clear that they are prepared to respond with a “forceful, immediate” reaction if President Trump decides to impose tariffs on Canadian goods.
In a statement released earlier today, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau warned that any new tariffs imposed by the US would be met with swift retaliation from Canada. “We will not hesitate to take strong action to defend our interests and our economy,” Trudeau said.
The threat of new tariffs comes as the US and Canada are locked in a bitter dispute over the renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). President Trump has repeatedly criticized Canada for what he sees as unfair trade practices, particularly in the dairy and lumber industries.
Despite ongoing negotiations, tensions between the two countries have continued to rise in recent weeks, with Trump threatening to impose tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum imports. Canada has responded by announcing its own retaliatory measures, including tariffs on US goods such as steel, aluminum, and agricultural products.
The escalating trade war between the US and Canada has sparked concerns among economists and business leaders, who fear that a prolonged conflict could harm both countries’ economies. Many are calling for a swift resolution to the dispute before it spirals out of control.
As the situation continues to unfold, all eyes will be on President Trump and Prime Minister Trudeau to see how they handle the growing trade tensions between their two countries. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
The Savannah Bananas have upgraded their home stadium, Historic Grayson Stadium, with new turf, lighting, and a video board.
The improvements were funded in part by $3 million from the city of Savannah’s Special Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) VII.
The Bananas will play about 30 games in Savannah this season, including the first-ever tour championship between all four Banana Ball teams.
Savannah Bananas catcher Bill LeRoy crouched on one knee behind the bullpen plate on a cold, dreary Savannah afternoon. When the ball hit his glove, he quickly dropped it into his open hand, bounced it off the turf and then attempted to kick it back up with his foot. LeRoy will begin his eighth season on Feb. 1, working from behind the plate. But before Banana Ball had taken the world by storm, LeRoy found himself working to make much needed improvements to the locker rooms at Historic Grayson Stadium.
“I actually ripped out some of the floor to the locker rooms and painted a lot of the locker rooms to make it look a little bit nicer,” he recalled of his early days when the team was just getting started “So, truly, just firsthand got to experience the growth of this place. It’s just a blessing to be a part of.”
The Savannah Bananas went all in with the Banana Ball World Tour in 2023 and last year expanded the tour to play in front of sold-out crowds at six major league ball parks. In January, players from both the Savannah Bananas and Party Animals returned to Historic Grayson Stadium for their spring practice as they prepare for a “record breaking” 2025 season.
While the players warmed up, Coach Tyler Gillum asked to have the lights turned on. A quick phone call later and the newly installed LED lighting system flashed, illuminating the players below as they tossed balls back and forth, occasionally bouncing one off the new artificial turf field.
Building brick by brick
Before practice Coach Tyler Gillum gave a speech to the players about how Banana Ball was being built ‘brick by brick by brick’. “I’ve been here since 2018, and Jesse and Emily were building it.” Said Gillum “And here’s the next level of putting another brick on the Banana kingdom here. The new turf is unbelievable. We’re gonna be able to play more games. We’re not going to get rained out as much. And it’s going to help with trick plays, too. The guys are fired up about the turf.”
Aside from the improved lighting and turf, a new videoboard loomed in the background, replacing the old one that was struck by lightning years ago. The improvements were part of an updated lease agreement between the Bananas and the city of Savannah that included $3 million from Special Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) VII proceeds earmarked for the historic facility, which will mark 100 years in 2026. It is a significant investment, considering Savannah is one of the smallest stadiums the teams will play during the 2025 Banana Ball World Tour.
Major League field and lights
As Banana Ball continues to grow in popularity, team owner Jesse Cole is looking for new ways to play before more fans―without playing more games. This season includes playing at 18 Major League Baseball parks and three football stadiums that will hold between 69,000 fans at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, home of the Tennessee Titans, to 81,000 fans at Clemson’s Memorial Stadium.
“I think it speaks a lot to how much we care and how much pride we have about being from Savannah,” said Bananas pitcher Kyle Luigs, “because this isn’t far off any of the surfaces that we’re going to play anywhere this year.”
With about 30 games scheduled for play in Savannah this season, including the first-ever tour championship between all four Banana Ball teams―Savannah Bananas, Party Animals, Firefighters and Texas Tailgaters―there will be plenty of opportunities for players to show off their skills on the new turf without Mother Nature interfering and flooding the field.
“The turf is awesome,” added Party Animals pitcher Bret Helton “It’s very cool knowing we can show up to work without one extra thing. You know, getting practice delayed or practice or a game canceled. It’s very cool being like, all right, we’re going to show up here. We’re going to push the envelope.”

India all-rounder Nitesh Kumar Reddy will take no part in the remaining games of the T20I series against England after he was ruled out hours ahead of the second match in Chennai, owing to an injury. Reddy played in the series-opener in Kolkata earlier this week, but he did not get the chance to bowl or bat in the match. For the unversed, Reddy was also part of India’s squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, playing all five Tests as the visitors lost the series 1-2.
Former India batter Aakash Chopra opened up on Reddy’s workload, saying that his body might not have been ready for the rigors of international cricket.
“Nitish Kumar Reddy is injured. He has been ruled out of the entire series. You must be thinking, ‘What would’ve happened?’ I am wondering how this would have happened. When you start playing international cricket, the workload is different,” Chopra said on his YouTube channel.
Chopra also highlighted that Reddy played all five Tests against Australia. Hence, he possibly got injured due to the same.
“Workload and pressure go hand in hand. He played 5 Tests in Australia. He performed there. He was on the ground consistently. He batted and even bowled a little. It takes a toll. Believe it or not, he is a young kid. The body sometimes doesn’t last that long,” he added.
“Suddenly, you realise there is an injury. I think something has happened. Maybe the body wasn’t ready for this type of workload and pressure, and he broke down. Shivam Dube has been called into the squad in place of Nitish Kumar Reddy,” Chopra explained.
India lead England 2-0 in the series and could wrap up the rubber in Rajkot when they take the field for the 3rd T20I on Tuesday.

FRISCO, Texas — Shedeur Sanders’ impact on the East-West Shrine Bowl was felt, even though the University of Colorado quarterback did not practice or take part in anything outside of meetings with quarterback-needy teams at the top of the 2025 NFL Draft.
There was an unusual flood of media to the Shrine Bowl this year, cementing Sanders’ status as one of the best and more fascinating players, a likely top-five pick in this year’s draft class. Long gone are the days of this game being filled with players who would just hope to be considered for a roster spot in the NFL — now there are legitimate prospects, Sanders aside, who want to come and showcase their talents on the field.
While Sanders feels like he has taken a leap on the field recently, there’s also the looming, enormous fact that he has been in the spotlight for a long time largely because of his family. Stepping into the life of a highly drafted quarterback is different from where he’s been, but the idea of fame being new doesn’t apply here. Being the son of NFL legend Deion Sanders has given him a clear answer on how he feels the pressures of being an NFL quarterback.
“I don’t,” Sanders said bluntly to Yahoo Sports. “That’s why the pressure doesn’t faze me. That’s why no situation would ever faze me. That’s why I know I’m the most guaranteed risk you can take.”
Shedeur Sanders has been preparing to be an NFL quarterback for a long time. (Davis Long/Yahoo Sports)
Sanders’ background is well-known. He’s the third of Deion Sanders’ sons to play high-level Division I football. Shedeur’s football journey took him from Trinity Christian School in Cedar Hill, Texas, then Jackson State University before ending up at the University of Colorado. His father has been there for every step of his football journey as either a head coach or offensive coordinator, but the NFL will be a different challenge. With the hiring of Brian Schottenheimer as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, instead of Deion Sanders, Shedeur will be taking the first step of his football journey on his own.
That didn’t seem to bother Shedeur when asked about it, which makes sense. He should be confident in his abilities as a Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year and Johnny Unitas Award winner. His father may have played a big role in his life, but ultimately, they’ve seen this through together and have reached the point where Shedeur can fulfill a lifelong dream of being an NFL player.
“I didn’t know that your parents being involved and wanting the best for you was a problem,” Sanders said to reporters at the Shrine Bowl. “The fact he was able to help me become the best quarterback in the country — he’s supposed to do that.”
And Sanders did, unequivocally, become one of the best quarterbacks in college football. At Jackson State, he started 26 games and threw for 6,963 yards, 70 touchdowns, 14 interceptions and had a 23-3 record — and he won the Jerry Rice Award in 2021 as the best player in FCS. At Colorado, the Buffaloes went 13-11 over his two seasons there, but he threw for 7,364 yards, 64 touchdowns and 13 interceptions and was part of turning the program as a whole in the right direction.
The road to get to this point was incredibly manicured, but it’s led him here nonetheless.
As an NFL Draft prospect, Sanders has fairly standard skills for a starting quarterback. He’s hovering around 6-foot-2, has good accuracy and the baseline arm strength needed to be considered a player teams would draft high. There are really only two players who are being considered potential franchise QB talents at the top of the draft this year: Sanders and former Miami quarterback Cam Ward.
“We’re friends, we’re friends,” Sanders said with a smile. “A lot of people in the media try to pit us against each other, but we’re family and friends first and foremost.”
Where those two players separate themselves in the eyes of teams will be one of the more interesting stories in the lead-up to the draft. While Ward can be a bit of a loose cannon on the field with some impressive highs physically, Sanders’ game isn’t quite as explosive, which has allowed him to develop the skills needed to be a top of the line quarterback prospect. Sanders also had the benefit of being coached by former NFL head coach and offensive play-caller Pat Shurmur, who is Colorado’s offensive coordinator.
Sanders gave Shurmur credit for where his game is right now in terms of his understanding of football.
“Coach Shurmur, he was the best thing that could’ve happened to the end of my college career,” Sanders told Yahoo Sports. “The way he went about his business is exactly how it is here, so he’s definitely true to who he is and he’s true to the process and what this league is made of. I’m just thankful for him.”
Even though Shurmur may not have had the most decorated NFL career, his experience is something a lot of college players don’t have access to in college. In terms of specific things that he learned with Shurmur, Sanders said that being able to handle pass protections better compared to earlier in his career has been a big win over the past season.
“He helped me dive into the protections and just cleaning up a lot of stuff with my game,” Sanders said. “That’s why I’m thankful I was able to end my college career with him.”
Sanders clearly has all the confidence in the world needed to take on this new challenge that he’s been training for his whole life for. Now it’s time to execute.
“It’s year by year,” Sanders said. “God will make sure I’m prepared each and every year, each and every year preparing for the next steps for the next things that are coming in life. Everything has happened for a reason and everything has happened for a purpose and I was just thankful that I was able to go through this process with my dad and with my family.”
Shedeur Sanders, son of NFL legend Deion Sanders, has been in the spotlight for most of his life. From his days as a highly recruited high school quarterback to his time at Jackson State University, where he followed in his father’s footsteps as a star player, Shedeur has always been comfortable under the bright lights.
Now, as he prepares for the next chapter in his football career, Shedeur is ready to make his mark on the NFL. In a recent interview, he expressed his confidence in his abilities and his readiness to take on the challenge of playing at the highest level.
“I’m the most guaranteed risk you can take,” Shedeur said. “I know what I bring to the table, and I’m ready to show the world what I can do on the biggest stage.”
With his combination of talent, work ethic, and pedigree, Shedeur is sure to turn heads in the NFL. As he continues to train and prepare for the upcoming draft, all eyes will be on this young star as he looks to make his mark on the league. Stay tuned for Shedeur Sanders’ NFL moment – it’s sure to be one for the ages.
