After four years of inflation, chaos at our borders, and weakness on the world stage, the United States is turning the page. President Trump’s inauguration will usher in a new era focused on American strength – including a strong economy, a strong border and a strong military.

I expect we will see the president take action immediately to secure the border and undo Biden administration policies that threaten America’s energy security. And Republicans in Congress will work tirelessly to amplify his efforts.   

We are already hard at work on legislation to accomplish two of our biggest priorities – providing the resources necessary to secure the border and extending the tax relief Republicans passed during the first Trump administration.

The Senate took an initial step on border security this past week with consideration of the Laken Riley Act, which will ensure that illegal aliens who steal, assault a law enforcement officer, or kill or seriously injure another person are detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement instead of being allowed out on the streets.

We’re looking to pass the bill in the Senate Monday and get it to the president’s desk shortly thereafter. Congressional Republicans will also deploy the Congressional Review Act to undo burdensome Biden administration regulations.

The voters handed President Trump a decisive victory in November. And now the real work begins: delivering on the mandate they’ve given us. 

The Senate is also hard at work making sure President Trump has the team he needs in place. Senate committees have held hearings on 12 of President Trump’s nominees so far, with more on the way. 

Last Wednesday, our committees held six hearings on Cabinet confirmations in one day, the most Cabinet confirmation hearings in a single day since 2001. Once nominees are out of committee, we’ll be working to quickly schedule confirmation votes on the Senate floor, with the goal of getting the president’s full Cabinet in place as soon as possible.

It’s going to be a new day in the executive branch in Washington. President Trump’s nominees are going to be focused on work, not woke. The days of executive branch agencies targeting conservative Americans, pushing extreme social policies, and advancing the social and environmental fantasies of the far left are over. 

How refreshing it will be to have an administration focused on relieving regulatory burdens, promoting a strong economy and building up our military. The Trump administration – and Republicans in Congress – will also be focused on increasing government efficiency. When we see a way to eliminate waste or save taxpayer dollars, we’re going to take it.

I don’t think it’s any coincidence that there’s a new optimism in the air since November. President Trump’s belief in our country and our citizens is contagious. He reminds us that anything is possible in America, and that while we may have had a tough four years under the Biden administration, we have everything we need to come back stronger.

As you wake up this morning, and walk outside, not only will you experience lows in the 30s, but wind chills have it feeling more like we’re in the 20s across parts of the viewing area.

These cold temperatures aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Starting Tuesday evening into overnight, we’re expecting a wintry mix to move through Georgia and Florida.

Beginning Tuesday evening, Georgia will begin to see a wintry mix, and it continues to move into Florida during the overnight hours.

Snow is likely in Georgia, while most of Florida is set to see sleet and freezing rain.

Black ice on the roads could be a big issue — and remember bridges freeze first.

Power outages could be a problem because when you have ice reaching .10″ to .25″, it can cause damage to power lines and weigh down trees.

Freezing low temperatures are expected for Tuesday and Wednesday as the wintry mix moves through, and wind chills will be in the 20s.

Things begin to improve mid-day Wednesday, as a low-pressure system forms across the Gulf and moves through South Florida.

With the chance to reach a first quarterfinal at his home Grand Slam, a fiercely focused Alex de Minaur is preparing to face Alex Michelsen at AO 2025.

With just one set dropped in three 2025 matches, Alex de Minaur’s Australian Open path doesn’t get any easier.

After solid wins over Dutchman Botic Van de Zandschulp and American Tristan Boyer, De Minaur was pushed against No.31 seed, Francisco Cerundolo in the third round.

Now he faces rising young American star, Alex Michelsen, who has been in red-hot form himself, downing 11th seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in his opening match and claiming his latest win over 19th seed Karen Khachanov.

Despite the challenging task ahead, many qualified observers – including former world No.1 Pat Rafter – believe the Michelsen match-up suits the Australian.

“I back him against Michelsen. I know Michelsen has a really big game [but] can he keep it up against someone like Alex?” Rafter said.

“I think it’s a bad match-up for Michelsen personally … if he can keep it together, he can cause a lot of destruction, I think, Michelsen. But I like Alex [de Minaur] there.”

With their head-to-head record tied at one win apiece, De Minaur is well aware of Michelsen’s powerful game and strong form entering their fourth-round encounter.

“He’s been playing really well. He’s a dangerous opponent with a lot of confidence now. He’s taken some big scalps this week, so ready for a battle,” the Sydneysider said.

“He’s going to go out there with no fear. I’m going to do my best to make it difficult for him.”

While acknowledging he wasn’t at his best against Cerundolo, the eighth-seeded De Minaur believes he can take lessons into his next match against world No.41 Michelsen.

“A part of me knew that at some point there was going to be always a match where pressure was going to be there and the nerves were going to be there, kind of the expectation was going to be there,” he conceded.

“I knew it was going to be a part of it.

“I just told myself to go out there, compete. I’d rather win ugly any day over losing pretty, right? Ultimately, I lived to fight another day. My next one I’ll make sure I bring a better level,” the 25-year-old smiled.

Should “Demon” progress to a first quarterfinal at his home Grand Slam, there’s a potential meeting with world No.1 and defending champion, Jannik Sinner, who next faces talented 13th seed Holger Rune.

Clock restarted for TikTok
TikTok said in a statement on X that it’s restoring service in the U.S. after U.S. President-elect Donald Trump wrote on his social media app Truth Social he would “issue an executive order on Monday” to delay a ban on TikTok. On Saturday, Perplexity AI submitted a bid to TikTok’s parent company ByteDance to create a new merged entity combining Perplexity, TikTok U.S. and new capital partners, CNBC learned.

First winning week for U.S. stocks in 2025
Markets in the U.S. rose on Friday to end the week higher for the first time in 2025. The pan-European Stoxx 600 index climbed 0.69%. The U.K.’s FTSE 100 rose 1.35% to close at a record high. The index was lifted by mining stocks, which advanced on the news that Glencore reportedly considered a merger with Rio Tinto although talks are no longer active.

TSMC confident of continued funding under Trump
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co expects that it’ll continue to receive the $6.6 billion it was promised under the Biden administration’s CHIPS and Science Act even after Trump takes office, TSMC Chief Financial Officer Wendell Huang told CNBC in an exclusive interview. On the campaign trail, Trump criticized the CHIPS Act and accused Taiwan of stealing the chip business from U.S.

Hamas and Israel exchange hostages and prisoners
The ceasefire between Israel and Hamas took effect on Sunday. Hamas released three women to Israel, its first batch of hostages, in exchange for Palestinians prisoners to be set free by Israel. The process will continue over the next weeks, during which, Hamas will release 33 of the 98 Israeli and foreign hostages as Israel returns Palestinian prisoners.

The inauguration of Trump will happen later Monday. Investors will want to keep an eye on what executive orders Trump will sign beginning from the first day of his presidency, especially as they relate to tariffs and corporate policies. Those orders could chart the direction of stocks for much longer than just the near term.

The bottom line

The S&P 500 surged above the shiny 6,000 level following Trump’s election victory but has largely erased all its gains and reverted to its pre-election level in the past few weeks. As Trump prepares to enter the White House, however, it seems like investors are gearing up to play the market based on his agenda again.

Stocks finally ended the week on a positive note, their first weekly gain for the year. For the week, the S&P 500 advanced 2.9% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 3.7%, their best weekly performance since the week of the U.S. presidential election in November. The Nasdaq Composite added 2.5%, its best week since early December.

Banks largely contributed to the bump in the indexes as better-than-expected earnings reports from big banks lifted their shares higher. Shares of Goldman Sachs popped around 12% on the week and JPMorgan Chase climbed 8% in the same period. Overall, the financial sector rallied more than 6% last week, outperforming the S&P.

Trump’s term as president might provide more forward momentum for bank stocks. Rising business and consumer confidence, an extension of tax cuts, and deregulation of the finance industry are potential drivers of the sector, according to Chris Senyek, chief investment strategist at Wolfe Research.

“We still see Financials as the biggest sectoral winner under the Trump administration,” Senyek wrote in a note on Friday.

That said, apart from anticipation of Trump sitting in the Oval Office, muted back-to-back inflation readings for December also buoyed animal spirits in the markets: All sectors of the market ended the week in the green.

The better-than-expected economic data earlier this week has helped “revive the goldilocks narrative for equities, and likely prompted some re-risking,” Barclays strategist Emmanuel Cau wrote in a Friday note.

Typically, any change involves increased risks. That’s true with Trump 2.0 — but as the number “two” suggests, a change we’ve seen before might mitigate a tiny bit of that uncertainty.

Incoming first lady Melania Trump says she’s packed and ready to move back into the White House, where son Barron will have a bedroom, and she plans to revive her Be Best children’s initiative.

Trump also said in a taped interview broadcast Monday on Fox News’ “Fox & Friends” that an upcoming documentary on her life that is set to be distributed by Amazon Prime Video later this year was her idea based on the reception to the memoir she released last year.

“So I had an idea to, to make a movie, to make a film about my life,” she said. “My life is incredible. It’s incredibly busy. And, I told my agent, you know, I have this idea, so please, you know, go out and, make a deal for me.”

The documentary is the latest connection between Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Donald Trump. The company in December announced plans to donate $1 million to the president-elect’s inauguration fund, and said it would also stream Trump’s inauguration on Jan. 20 on its Prime Video service, a separate in-kind donation worth another $1 million.

In an abrupt shift from the usual soundtrack at Donald Trump’s political rallies, former First Lady Melania Trump made a theatrical entrance at the Republican National Convention on Thursday night, walking in to the arena to a Beethoven symphony for her first public appearance since March.

A week away from the inauguration and the Trumps’ return to the White House, Melania Trump said she is “packed” and has picked out the furniture she wants to bring to the executive mansion. The second time has been easier, she said, because she knows the rooms where the family will be living.

“I already packed. I already selected the, you know, the furniture that needs to go in. So it’s, it’s very different, a transition, this time, second time around,” she said.

Their son, Barron, 18 and a freshman at New York University, will have a room for when he visits.
