  • Financially Ready: Preparing for the Financial Side of Owning a Car

According to the latest statistics available from Statista, there were 283.4 million vehicles registered in the US at the end of 2022. While this might be a few years out of date, we can assume that there are more now – and you might be considering becoming one of that number.

However, you do need to think about the costs that are part of car ownership – and that goes beyond the purchase price. Cars have regular maintenance and general costs that you will need to pay, from fuel and insurance through to tires and repairs, so making a solid financial plan to cover this is the smartest way to be prepared.

The AAA recently released a report on the cost of owning a car in America. It was found that the average cost of car ownership annually, not including purchase price or any loan repayments, was $12,297. That works out at $1,024 per month and can be more than 20% of a driver’s income.

    Let’s get into it.

    Purchase Price

New cars are expensive. The average price of a new car is around $40,000. For new drivers, or those on a budget, used is a better choice.

Decide on your price range, whether you are going to get a car loan to finance it or whether you are looking to pay cash, and shop around for the best deal. The finance deals are very popular and can also be used when buying tires through tire finance. If you can take someone that is knowledgeable about cars with you when you go to look at vehicles that will help too.

    Fuel

The average American, driving 15,000 miles and using regular unleaded gas between May 2023 and May 2024 paid about 14.9c per mile. That’s $2,235 annually. Gas prices change almost daily, so it is one of the hardest costs to quantify.

    EV

While you might save on fuel costs with an electric vehicle, there are specific costs that need to be covered instead.

    You’ll need to consider:

    · Installation and maintenance of charging equipment in your home

    · Ongoing cost of electricity and increase in bills.

    · Charging while out of the house and incurring costs while you are waiting for your vehicle to charge.

    Tires, Maintenance, and Repairs

If you buy a car with warranty, then some costs for maintenance will be covered, but you need to consider replacement tires and set aside some funds for repairs.

Tires are the only part of your vehicle that comes in contact with the road, and tires can affect everything from ride handling to fuel costs and especially safety. You might want to look into tire finance to help here, but if not the average cost for maintenance, tires and repairs monthly is $126.

    Insurance

Insurance is a requirement in almost every state, and for full coverage the annual cost on average is $1,715 annually.

Remember that this price is affected by different factors including:

    · Type of car

    · Type of coverage

    · Your age

    · Your driving record

    · Where you live

    Registration and Taxes

While the cost of fees and taxes relating to the registration of your vehicle will vary across states, the average cost of this is $815 annually.

Failure to comply with registration and taxes is likely to result in trouble with the law, so it is something you really need to consider.

    Depreciation

While this might seem like a strange thing to add to a list of costs – as it is not a payment that you have to make – the value of the vehicle you are driving will drop the longer you own it and the more you drive it.

Cars tend to depreciate faster in the first two years from production, but the average annual depreciation for vehicles in the US is $4,680, so that is something to consider.

Planning your cash flow, saving before you buy, and sticking to a budget will help you be financially prepared for owning a vehicle.

Owning a car is a significant financial commitment that requires careful planning and preparation. From purchasing the vehicle to ongoing expenses such as insurance, maintenance, and fuel, there are a number of financial considerations to take into account. In this post, we’ll discuss some tips for getting financially ready to own a car and ensure that you are prepared for the costs associated with vehicle ownership.

    1. Budgeting for the Purchase: Before buying a car, it’s important to set a budget and stick to it. Consider factors such as the cost of the vehicle, taxes, registration fees, and any additional features or upgrades you may want. It’s also important to factor in ongoing expenses such as insurance and maintenance when determining how much you can afford to spend on a car.

    2. Financing Options: If you don’t have enough cash on hand to purchase a car outright, you may need to explore financing options such as a car loan. Shop around for the best interest rates and loan terms, and make sure you understand the total cost of the loan, including any fees or charges.

    3. Insurance Costs: Car insurance is a necessary expense for all car owners, and the cost can vary depending on factors such as your driving record, the type of car you drive, and where you live. Shop around for insurance quotes to find the best coverage at the most affordable price, and consider bundling your car insurance with other policies to save money.

    4. Maintenance and Repairs: Cars require regular maintenance to keep them running smoothly, as well as occasional repairs when things go wrong. Budget for routine maintenance such as oil changes, tire rotations, and brake inspections, as well as potential repairs such as replacing worn-out parts or fixing mechanical issues.

    5. Fuel Costs: Fuel costs can add up quickly, especially if you have a long commute or drive frequently. Consider factors such as fuel efficiency when choosing a car, and look for ways to save money on gas, such as carpooling, using public transportation, or driving more efficiently.

By taking these financial considerations into account and planning ahead, you can ensure that you are financially ready to own a car and enjoy the convenience and freedom that comes with having your own vehicle. Remember to budget carefully, shop around for the best deals, and stay on top of ongoing expenses to keep your car ownership experience as smooth and stress-free as possible.

  • Republicans reportedly ready to cut Medicaid funding to pay for Trump plans | Republicans

Republicans are reportedly prepared to cut Medicaid funding to pay for Donald Trump’s promised crackdown on immigration and to fund tax cuts that would mostly benefit the wealthy.

The GOP in the House and Senate have floated a series of ideas – many of which would target lower-income Americans – to cover the cost of extending tax cuts passed by Trump in 2017, the New York Times reported.

Among the proposals is a plan to reduce access to Medicaid, the government scheme which provides health insurance to low-income Americans, in a move which would cause 600,000 people to lose access to healthcare.

Trump has touted the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act as a key achievement of his first term. The legislation, which reduced the top corporate income tax rate from 35% to 21%, is set to expire at the end of 2025, and the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office has estimated extending it would add $4.6tn to the deficit.

On the campaign trail Trump repeatedly promised to make the 2017 tax cuts permanent, but with the 2025 deadline looming, Republicans are scrambling to find a way to fund that pledge – along with the money required for Trump’s desired crackdown on immigration.

Along with the Medicaid cut, which would introduce work requirements that would effectively strip 600,000 people of their healthcare coverage, Republicans are considering ending Medicaid for non-US citizens, and repealing Biden-era tax credits which are designed to reduce health costs, the New York Times reported.

A 50-page document being circulated among congressional Republicans also proposes taxing income from scholarships and fellowships, rolling back climate change efforts passed under the Biden administration, and raising taxes on people who can use a free gym in the workplace.

Another proposal outlines changes to the Affordable Care Act, commonly known as Obamacare, which would reduce coverage for some lower-income Americans, Newsweek reported.

The Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center reported in July that households making about $450,000 or more would receive nearly half of the benefits of the extended tax cuts. The median household income in the US is $80,610, and 95% of American households make less than $400,000 a year.

    skip past newsletter promotion

Biden had promised to extend the tax cuts only for families making $400,000 or less a year.

in Congress are reportedly considering cutting Medicaid funding in order to pay for President Trump’s proposed plans. This move has sparked outrage among Democrats and advocates for low-income Americans, who argue that cutting Medicaid would harm the most vulnerable members of society.

The proposed cuts to Medicaid come as part of a larger effort by Republicans to offset the costs of Trump’s ambitious agenda, which includes tax cuts, military spending increases, and infrastructure investments. Medicaid, which provides healthcare coverage to low-income individuals and families, is a major target for budget cuts due to its high cost.

Critics of the proposed cuts argue that slashing Medicaid funding would leave millions of Americans without access to essential healthcare services, including preventive care, prescription drugs, and long-term care. They also warn that cutting Medicaid would disproportionately affect vulnerable populations, such as children, the elderly, and people with disabilities.

Republicans argue that reducing Medicaid spending is necessary to rein in the federal budget deficit and ensure the long-term sustainability of the program. They also claim that cutting Medicaid funding will encourage states to find more efficient ways to deliver healthcare services to low-income residents.

As the debate over Medicaid funding continues to intensify, it remains to be seen how Congress will ultimately address the issue. Advocates for low-income Americans are urging lawmakers to prioritize the needs of the most vulnerable members of society and protect Medicaid from drastic cuts.

  • Former Bulldogs ready to shine at Senior Bowl

Former Bulldogs Ladd McConkey and Javon Bullard are two recent examples of how participating in the Senior Bowl can benefit one’s career.

Georgia’s six representatives—Tate Ratledge, Dan Jackson, Trevor Etienne, Arian Smith, Smael Mondon, and Tyrian Ingram-Dawkins—undoubtedly hope for similar success.

Bulldog center Jared Wilson was also selected for the event, which concludes with Saturday’s Senior Bowl (2:30 p.m., NFL Network), but according to reports will not be taking part.

The success McConkey and Bullard enjoyed during their rookie years in the NFL should give the newcomers ample motivation to succeed.

Although both players enjoyed solid careers for Georgia, they entered last year’s Senior Bowl Week in Mobile with questions.

For McConkey, it was whether or not he could shake off the injuries that plagued his senior year while also proving that despite his smallish stature, he had what it takes to succeed in the NFL.

Bullard, who was also undersized, had to show scouts and NFL personnel that he had the toughness and skill to make it big.

Thanks to the Senior Bowl, both made quite the impression.

Teammates voted McConkey and Bullard as the best wide receiver and safety, respectively, at last year’s Senior Bowl.

A few months later, the Los Angeles Chargers traded up to take McConkey with the 34th overall pick in the NFL Draft. Bullarsd was taken with the 58th overall pick by Green Bay.

McConkey enjoyed one of the best years for a rookie receiver in NFL history, catching 82 passes for 1,149 yards and seven touchdowns. Bullard, meanwhile, made 90 tackles for the Packers.

McConkey’s opportunity to excel during 1-on-1 drills helped open their eyes.

“It kind of lets you show your personality, how you run routes a little bit. The bigger guys, you get to see them run the go-routes, go up and get it, where the intermediate guys like me have to show their speed, change of direction, stuff like that,” McConkey said of the 1-on-1 sessions. “It’s just another chance to show you can run routes. It shows that you understand leverage, speed, and quickness.”

Etienne will be one of six running backs representing the American squad.

The Florida transfer, who battled through injuries his one season with the Bulldogs, will look to prove he’s healthy after rushing for 609 yards and team-leading nine touchdowns.

Other Bulldogs also have areas to prove.

Smith will need to show the scouts that he’s able to consistently catch the ball after being plagued by drops during his final season with the Bulldogs.

Mondon, meanwhile, is out to show his versatility as a linebacker, with Ingram-Dawkins anxious to prove what he’s all about after being hampered by injuries throughout his career.

A strong showing can move Ratledge up the ladder, and he could be asked to display his skills at center after cross-training there for Georgia.

It’s also a huge opportunity for Jackson, the former walk-on who leaves Georgia as a two-year starter in the secondary.

In Mobile, he’ll attempt to show there’s a lot more football left in his future.

Former Bulldogs ready to shine at Senior Bowl

As the Senior Bowl approaches, all eyes are on the former Georgia Bulldogs who will be showcasing their skills in front of NFL scouts and executives. With a talented roster of players, the Bulldogs are poised to make a strong impression at the prestigious college football all-star game.

Leading the pack is quarterback Jake Fromm, who has been a standout player for Georgia throughout his college career. Fromm’s leadership, accuracy, and football IQ have drawn praise from scouts, and he will have the opportunity to solidify his draft stock with a strong performance at the Senior Bowl.

Joining Fromm at the Senior Bowl are offensive tackle Andrew Thomas and running back D’Andre Swift, both of whom are projected to be early round picks in the upcoming NFL draft. Thomas is a dominant force on the offensive line, while Swift is a dynamic playmaker with the ability to change the game with his speed and agility.

Defensively, linebacker Tae Crowder and safety J.R. Reed will be looking to make their mark at the Senior Bowl. Crowder and Reed have been key contributors for the Bulldogs’ defense, and they will have the chance to showcase their skills against some of the top offensive talent in college football.

With a talented group of former Bulldogs set to take the field at the Senior Bowl, Georgia fans can look forward to seeing their favorite players shine on a national stage. As they compete against the best of the best, these players will have the opportunity to prove that they are ready to make an impact at the next level.

Are you a member of the Bottom Fishing Club? If so, you may want to keep a close eye on Intel Corp (NASDAQ:INTC) as the tech giant may finally be ready to rebound.

Intel has faced numerous challenges in recent years, including manufacturing delays and increased competition from rivals like AMD. As a result, the stock has lagged behind the broader market and many investors have written off the company as a has-been in the tech sector.

However, recent developments suggest that Intel may be turning a corner. The company recently announced plans to invest $20 billion in two new chip factories in Arizona, signaling a renewed commitment to innovation and growth. Additionally, Intel has made progress in addressing its manufacturing issues and is set to release a new generation of chips that could help it regain market share.

While Intel still faces challenges, including ongoing competition and the need to execute on its growth plans, there are signs that the company’s stock may be undervalued and poised for a rebound. For investors willing to take a contrarian bet, now may be the time to consider adding Intel to their portfolio.

As always, it’s important to do your own research and consult with a financial advisor before making any investment decisions. But for members of the Bottom Fishing Club, Intel may be a stock worth considering as it looks to turn the tide and regain its footing in the tech sector.

As well as toting two bags, both featuring the same vibrant retro colour palette with pops of turquoise and coral alongside hints of more mellow brown and yellow, EmRata also gives a look at the brand’s latest shoe edit. With influence of ’50s and ’60s glamour evident throughout, it’s perhaps most obvious in the stripey espadrille heel with satin scarf ankle tie. No surprise the stand-out sandals have gone straight to the top of our wishlist.
