  • Kyrie Irving receives critical injury update before Mavericks-Cavaliers

The Dallas Mavericks still have a basketball game on Sunday afternoon after the mind-blowing Luka Doncic-Anthony Davis trade that occurred overnight, and once again, the Mavericks are dealing with a bunch of injuries.

Dallas entered the day with Anthony Davis, Max Christie, Dwight Powell, and Dereck Lively II out as Davis and Christie look to join the team, Lively recovers from a stress fracture in his ankle, and Powell deals with a hip strain. Kyrie Irving, Daniel Gafford, and P.J. Washington entered as questionable but were given updates before Sunday’s 2:30 CST tip.

Irving (right shoulder soreness), Gafford (ankle soreness), and Washington (knee soreness) were all downgraded to out. Dallas will now be dealing with a skeleton crew of a lineup, likely starting Spencer Dinwiddie, Quentin Grimes, Naji Marshall, Olivier-Maxence Prosper, and two-way center Kylor Kelley against arguably the best team in the NBA.

Irving already missed the game against the Cavaliers earlier in the season, so he’ll go the 2024-25 season without playing against the team that drafted him, barring some other insane trade within the next week.

Cleveland will be without Isaac Okoro (right should AC joint sprain) and Dean Wade (right knee bone bruise). Caris LeVert (right wrist sprain) and Craig Porter Jr. (illness) are still questionable.

Kyrie Irving, star point guard for the Cleveland Cavaliers, has received a critical injury update ahead of their matchup against the Dallas Mavericks. Irving, who has been dealing with a nagging knee injury, underwent further evaluation by team doctors and it has been determined that he will be sidelined for at least the next two weeks.

This news comes as a blow to the Cavaliers, who are currently fighting for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Irving’s absence will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the team’s performance, as he is a key player and offensive threat for the Cavaliers.

Despite this setback, the Cavaliers remain focused on their goal of making a postseason push and will need to rely on their depth and resilience to fill the void left by Irving’s absence.

Fans will be eagerly awaiting Irving’s return to the court, as his dynamic play and leadership are crucial to the Cavaliers’ success. In the meantime, the team will have to rally together and step up in his absence to secure much-needed wins in their quest for a playoff berth.

  • Bronny James receives big ovations during Lakers’ road win in Washington

Bronny James plays the entire 4th quarter and scores 5 points, including a 3-point play for the 2nd bucket of his NBA career.

    • Get NBA League Pass TODAY

WASHINGTON (AP) — Even on the road, Bronny James was quite a crowd favorite.

Fans in Washington chanted for LeBron James’ son early and often, and with the Los Angeles Lakers way ahead of the Wizards on Thursday night, the younger James played the entire fourth quarter of his team’s 134-96 victory.

Bronny James scored a career-high five points. He shot only 1-for-6 from the field, but he made a driving layup while being fouled and converted the free throw for a three-point play.

“He did a lot of really good things tonight. I thought he made a couple really nice passes,” Lakers coach JJ Redick said. “Defensively he was great. It’s building blocks for every young player, and I think tonight was a good, positive building block for him.”

James’ night also included an air ball from 3-point range, two rebounds, two assists and two fouls. He came up with a steal and made a nice long pass to Dalton Knecht for a dunk. Shortly after his lone field goal, James drove to the basket again and lobbed an alley-oop to Christian Koloko for a dunk.

James closed out the scoring with a pair of free throws in the final seconds — and received an “MVP! MVP!” chant from the crowd.

“He’s had eyeballs on him his whole life. He’s used to it,” Redick said. “I remember not playing a lot my rookie year and second year. The Orlando fans would sometimes chant that in a blowout in the fourth quarter — ‘We want JJ’ — and it’s a weird feeling. There’s that audible sort of anticipation every time you shoot the ball. It’s a lot.

“He has handled everything with dignity, grace, class, all that stuff. He’ll continue to grow.”

Bronny James, the son of NBA legend LeBron James, received thunderous ovations from fans during the Los Angeles Lakers’ road win against the Washington Wizards.

The young basketball prodigy, who is currently a junior in high school, was in attendance to support his father and the Lakers as they battled the Wizards at the Capital One Arena. Bronny was spotted sitting courtside, cheering on his dad and the team throughout the game.

As the cameras panned to Bronny in the stands, fans erupted in applause and cheers, showing their support for the budding star. The crowd’s reaction was a testament to the growing popularity and star power of the 17-year-old, who has been making waves in the basketball world with his impressive skills and potential.

Despite not being on the court, Bronny’s presence was felt and appreciated by fans, teammates, and his father, who expressed his pride and gratitude for his son’s support. The ovations and attention that Bronny received during the game only further solidified his status as a rising star in the basketball world.

As the Lakers secured a crucial road win against the Wizards, Bronny’s presence and the support he received served as a reminder of the bright future ahead for the James family and the basketball world as a whole. The ovations for Bronny were well-deserved and only added to the excitement and anticipation surrounding his promising career.

  • Burlington solar company receives $389 million in financing from Canadian investment company

Burlington-based Encore Renewable Energy has announced a $389 million financing agreement with a Canadian investment company.

The funding from Brookfield Asset Management — which is a combination of loans and tax credit transfers — is earmarked primarily for construction of an existing portfolio of 25 projects across the U.S., which includes six in Vermont.

Encore is in the process of constructing four solar projects in Barre, Danville, West Rutland and Sheldon and installing two large-scale batteries in Royalton and Middlebury, which can store renewable energy and feed it back into the electrical grid when solar production is low, according to Lauren Glickman, Encore’s vice president of policy and communications.

All 25 projects in the portfolio are on track to be completed by the end of 2026, Glickman said.

Because of the federal and state tax credits available for clean energy assets, such as Encore’s solar projects, investment in these projects is attractive to companies like Brookfield. However, as the new Trump administration takes shape, some investors have cooled on major renewable projects. Encore sees the investment as a vote of confidence during a period otherwise defined by doubt, according to co-CEO Blake Sturcke.

“The industry is facing a higher level of uncertainty than it had been previously, and because of the uncertainty that’s been created, capital is generally going to be harder to raise,” Sturcke said. “We feel so fortunate that Brookfield has the confidence in us that we were able to raise this money.”

He said the influx of capital is a boon for the company to keep expanding, even as smaller renewable companies may face challenges with the current administration. Sturcke said he hopes it will allow the company to bring on new jobs for Vermonters and create more trickle-down opportunities in construction and development for their projects.

In addition to the 25 projects primarily included in this financing, some of the funding will go toward a broader portfolio of 100 projects in earlier phases of development. The company also has plans for the development of three utility-scale batteries in West Rutland, Barre and Bennington.

Sturcke sees the next big push for Encore as moving more into renewable energy storage projects — batteries like those under construction in Middlebury and Royalton.

“As it relates to increasing the percentage of (energy) load that can be renewable and to grid stability, I think (battery storage) is so important, and we think there’s a big opportunity to make a difference there,” Sturcke said.

  • Trump White House Receives 10,000 ‘New Media’ Applications After Widening Scope of Press Access

President Donald Trump’s White House has received more than 10,000 applications for its “new media” seat, according to press secretary Karoline Leavitt on Friday.

The new media seat — which was announced earlier this week at Leavitt’s first press briefing — aims to give independent journalists, podcasters, social media influencers and content creators a chance to ask questions alongside reporters from legacy media outlets like The New York Times and The Washington Post.

On Friday, the new media seat was being occupied by the co-hosts of the “Ruthless” podcast. John Ashbrook, one of the show’s co-hosts, was even called on by Leavitt to ask the first question of the day.

“You know, Karoline, in your first briefing, the media went after this administration reporting illegal immigrants they claim were not criminal,” Ashbrook said. “Question is, do you think they’re out of touch with Americans demanding action on our border crisis?”

Leavitt responded that the mainstream media is “certainly is out of touch” with regards to illegal immigration. She then pointed to a recent poll from the NYT — “which, of course, is a legacy media outlet” — that showed 87% of Americans support deporting violent illegal immigrants.

Earlier in the week, she said the new Trump administration would restore more than 400 press passes that were revoked during Joe Biden’s time in office. Leavitt said this, coupled with the new media seat and Trump’s recent conversations with reporters, shows he is the “most transparent” president in history.

Among those who have applied for new media seat approval this week include James O’Keefe, the Project Veritas founder who is now running O’Keefe Media Group; and Seth Dillon, the CEO of The Babylon Bee, the right-leaning satirical site.

At 27 years old, Leavitt took the designation of being the youngest White House press secretary from Ronald Ziegler, who was 29 when he served for Richard Nixon, beginning in 1969. The position was introduced during Herbert Hoover’s administration in 1929.

Looking ahead, Leavitt joked the White House may need to expand the press room to accommodate its new media members.

Check TheWrap next week for a feature story on some of the new media voices who are now in the White House press briefing room — including Natalie Winters, who co-hosts “Steve Bannon’s War Room” on Rumble.

The post Trump White House Receives 10,000 ‘New Media’ Applications After Widening Scope of Press Access appeared first on TheWrap.

The Trump White House has received a staggering 10,000 applications from ‘new media’ outlets after recently widening the scope of press access. This move has opened up opportunities for smaller, independent media organizations to have a seat at the table alongside more traditional news outlets.

The expansion of press access is a positive step towards promoting diversity and giving a voice to a wider range of perspectives in the media landscape. It also reflects a recognition of the changing media landscape, where digital and alternative media sources are playing an increasingly important role in shaping public discourse.

With such a large number of applications pouring in, the Trump White House will have a tough task ahead in sifting through and selecting the most qualified and reputable outlets to grant access. This process will be crucial in ensuring that the press corps is truly representative of a diverse range of voices and viewpoints.

Overall, this development signals a shift towards a more inclusive and open approach to media access in the Trump administration. It will be interesting to see how this new media landscape shapes the coverage of the White House in the coming months and years.

ALMA, Mich. (WNEM) – New housing units are coming to downtown Alma.

The nine new units will be located at 311 E. Superior Street.

The long-vacant 12,111 square-foot building is being rehabilitated with a $1.1 million Revitalization and Placemaking (RAP) grant, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced on Monday, Jan. 27.

“The RAP program helps us make our big cities and small towns better, more affordable places to live, work, and do business. These investments show how we’re improving quality of life for Michiganders by replacing old, abandoned buildings with new ones that give more Michiganders an affordable place to live or start or grow their own business. Let’s keep working together to lower costs for buyers and renters and reinvest in our communities,” Whitmer said.

This project will generate a total capital investment of more than $3 million to Alma’s downtown, Whitmer’s office said.

The project includes updates to the exterior façade, restoration to the original masonry, and new signage.

“This grant is a great opportunity to help provide much-needed housing, as well as preserve a historic part of downtown,” State Rep. Jerry Neyer (R-Shepherd) said.

  • Gregg Popovich’s stand-in receives rave reviews for coaching job

The Spurs and Gregg Popovich have been synonymous with one another since the 1996-97 NBA season. That’s why there was much uncertainty around the franchise when the longtime head coach took a leave of absence in early November to recover from a mild stroke.

Luckily for the Spurs, Popovich’s assistant coach, Mitch Johnson, has done a tremendous job since taking over the clipboard. On Thursday, the Spurs improved to 18-19 under Johnson — and 20-22 overall — with a 140-110 rout of the Pacers in the ongoing Paris Games. A sub-.500 record is nothing to write home about, but it’s still an improvement from last season when the Spurs finished 22-60, missing the postseason for a fifth consecutive year.

As such, the Spurs are on track to return to relevancy under the leadership of Johnson, who sat under Popovich’s learning tree for five years before being entrusted into the head coaching job. Even the Spurs players realize Johnson is the voice the locker room needed in the wake of Popovich’s abrupt health issue.

“Mitch has done a great job, along with our whole coaching staff,” Chris Paul told reporters in Paris. “When you’re in a situation like that, getting thrust into a head-coaching position, you’ve already built trust with guys because he was a lot of times the guy who was working guys out, training guys and whatnot, so he’s done an amazing job.”

Paul cited Johnson’s college career at Stanford as a reason for him to relate to players and thereby command their respect.

“He coaches with passion,” Paul said of Johnson. “You can tell Mitch used to hoop, as a point guard at Stanford. He coaches with passion and I think that feeds our team. There’s a lot of trust there, a lot of communication, and great for me to be able to play for him.”

If and when Popovich, who will turn 76 on Jan. 28, decides to ride off into the sunset, the Spurs have seemingly unearthed the Hall of Famer’s replacement.

The Spurs are going through a tricky time in their franchise history. Despite missing the playoffs for five consecutive seasons, there is growing optimism that they can return to title contention while building off the extraordinary talents of Victor Wembanyama. To that end, Johnson has also been burdened with the task of fast-tracking the development of Wemby, a role he has excelled in.

The Spurs will again play the Pacers on Saturday at the Accor Arena in Paris. They return home to host the Clippers on Tuesday.

Gregg Popovich’s stand-in receives rave reviews for coaching job

The NBA world was shocked when it was announced that legendary San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich would be taking a leave of absence for personal reasons. However, the team’s interim head coach, Becky Hammon, has been receiving high praise for her stellar job in leading the team in Popovich’s absence.

Hammon, who is the first female assistant coach in NBA history, has seamlessly stepped into the head coaching role and has shown her expertise in managing the team and making crucial game-time decisions. Under her leadership, the Spurs have continued to perform at a high level and have even pulled off some impressive wins against tough opponents.

Players and fans alike have been impressed with Hammon’s coaching abilities and her ability to command respect from the team. Many have even suggested that she should be considered for a head coaching position in the future, as she has proven herself to be more than capable of handling the responsibilities of leading an NBA team.

As Popovich continues to take care of personal matters, the Spurs are in good hands with Hammon at the helm. Her success as an interim head coach has solidified her place in NBA history and has shown that gender is no barrier to success in coaching.

  • 1,000th student receives immunizations through Fairbanks School, Marion County partnership: IU News

A partnership between the Marion County Public Health Department and the Indiana University Fairbanks School of Public Health at IU Indianapolis has immunized over 1,000 students in its first few months. This milestone is part of a broader initiative providing critical health services to students, staff and community members.

A Marion County student receives his immunizations through a clinic offered because of a partnership between Marion County Public Health Department and the IU Fairbanks School of Public Health. Photo provided by the IU Fairbanks School of Public Health

The program is a collaboration among Marion County schools, the Marion County Public Health Department and the Fairbanks School. It offers a suite of services to Marion County schools, including immunization clinics and training for Stop the Bleed, CPR and naloxone administration education.

With childhood immunization rates sometimes lower than 70% for measles, mumps and rubella in some Marion County schools — far below the 95% needed for herd immunity for measles — these clinics play a vital role in protecting public health. The program is especially critical as measles cases in the U.S. quadrupled in 2024 compared to 2023.

“All students should have the opportunity to thrive in school, and school-based vaccine clinics reduce barriers for families who might not be able to make it to a primary-care appointment,” said Shanda Eickelberger, school liaison at the Fairbanks School. “This program, assisted by the Fairbanks School, is working to ensure every child receives essential care. This allows children and families a healthier school year, which correlates to fewer absences and more time learning in the classroom.”

Schools throughout Marion County have hosted school-based immunization clinics in their facilities.

“Ensuring children are fully immunized is essential not only for their health but for the well-being of our entire community,” said Meg Carlson, director of health services for Indianapolis Public Schools and an alumna of the Fairbanks School. “This initiative makes immunizations accessible to every student, particularly those who might otherwise face barriers, like missing records or being new to the country.”

The program also addresses the unique needs of Marion County’s diverse student population, including children from immigrant families and those who frequently change schools. Through partnerships with the statewide Children and Hoosiers Immunization Record Program registry, known as CHIRP, providers ensure accurate tracking and timely delivery of vaccines.

Throughout Marion County, the initiative also strengthens school safety and staff preparedness through Stop the Bleed, CPR and naloxone training.

“We’ve trained school staff, including teachers, social workers, bus drivers and custodial staff, on life-saving measures that can make a critical difference in emergencies,” Eickelberger said.

The program is supported by a team of Fairbanks student interns, including one who serves as a translator for immigrant and refugee families — a testament to the program’s commitment to inclusivity and community engagement.

With over 400 schools in Marion County, the initiative exemplifies the impact of collaboration in addressing public health challenges.

“School health is community health,” said Melissa McMasters, administrator of immunization and infectious disease programs at the Marion County Public Health Department. “By ensuring our students are protected, we are safeguarding the future of our community.”

The Marion County Public Health Department is recognized by the Public Health Foundation as an academic public health department. This is a partnership between an academic institution and a public health agency that provides overlap and knowledge sharing in research, teaching and service.

1,000th student receives immunizations through Fairbanks School, Marion County partnership: IU News

We are thrilled to announce that the 1,000th student has received life-saving immunizations through the partnership between Fairbanks School and Marion County. This milestone marks a significant achievement in our efforts to protect the health and well-being of our community.

Since the beginning of this partnership, we have worked tirelessly to ensure that every student has access to the vaccines they need to stay healthy and thrive. Through our collaboration with Marion County, we have been able to provide immunizations to students regardless of their ability to pay, ensuring that no child is left behind.

We are proud to see the impact of our work reflected in the number of students who have received immunizations through this partnership. As we continue to strive for a healthier, safer community, we are grateful for the support of our partners, volunteers, and staff who have made this achievement possible.

Together, we can make a difference in the lives of our students and ensure that they have the protection they need to succeed. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this important initiative, and here’s to the next 1,000 students who will benefit from our efforts.

  • Gwin Oaks Elementary School receives $10,000 grant

Gwin Oaks Elementary School in Gwinnett County was recently awarded $10,000 dollars through the McDonald’s Golden Grants Program.

The school will use the funds to invest in its English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) students through Pocketalk translators and other advanced technology.

These tools will foster an inclusive learning environment that ensures students are given the tools they need to succeed.

“We are incredibly grateful to McDonald’s for their generosity and commitment to our students,” says Deena Pagan, ESOL teacher at Gwin Oaks Elementary School. “This grant enables us to provide essential resources to bridge communication gaps and support a more inclusive learning experience. I am eager to see how these tools will transform our students’ educational journey and strengthen our school community.”

The Atlanta-exclusive Golden Grants program, which was established in 2018, awards one $20,000 grant, one $10,000 grant and ten $1,000 grants.

Organizations looking to qualify must focus on education initiatives that support and benefit students in grades K-12 such as homelessness support, supply needs, technology programs and mentorship programs.

We are thrilled to announce that Gwin Oaks Elementary School has been awarded a $10,000 grant! This grant will provide essential resources and support for our students, teachers, and staff. We are incredibly grateful for this generous contribution, which will help enhance the learning environment and opportunities for our students. Thank you to the organization that awarded us this grant, and thank you to our dedicated community for your continued support. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of our students. #GwinOaksPride #Grateful #MakingADifference
