  • An obliterated record and a 1% chance

Have you ever come across a record so thoroughly destroyed that it seemed impossible to salvage? That was the situation I found myself in recently when I stumbled upon a vinyl record that had been completely obliterated.

The cover was torn and faded, with chunks missing and water damage evident. The record itself was cracked in multiple places, making it a near-impossible task to even attempt to play it.

But despite the sorry state of this record, something compelled me to hold onto it. Perhaps it was the mystery of what music lay hidden beneath the scratches and cracks, or maybe it was the challenge of trying to restore something that seemed beyond repair.

As I carefully examined the record, I realized that there was still a 1% chance that it could be salvaged. With the right tools and a whole lot of patience, I set out to try and bring this obliterated record back to life.

Hours turned into days as I painstakingly cleaned and repaired the record, using every trick in the book to try and smooth out the cracks and scratches. And finally, after what felt like an eternity, I placed the needle on the record and held my breath.

To my amazement, the sound that emerged was clear and beautiful, a testament to the power of perseverance and the magic of music. Despite the odds stacked against it, this obliterated record had defied all expectations and emerged victorious.

So the next time you come across something that seems beyond repair, remember the story of this record and the 1% chance that turned into a miracle. Sometimes, all it takes is a little faith and a whole lot of determination to bring something back from the brink of destruction.

  • Brett Favre says viral confrontation with Mark Gastineau about NFL sack record was a ‘setup’

A video went viral back in December that featured Mark Gastineau confronting Brett Favre in 2023 about Michael Strahan sacking the Green Bay Packers legend to break Gastineau’s single-season sack record.

In the final game of the 2001 season, Favre appeared to fall onto the field before being tackled by Strahan, giving the New York Giants legend the record. (It’s since been tied by T.J. Watt.) Gastineau accused Favre of taking a “dive,” and the play remains controversial.

Gastineau met Favre at a memorabilia event last year, saying that Favre had “hurt” him and that he was going to “take my sack back” in a heated exchange.

The confrontation was featured in ESPN’s 30 for 30, “New York Sack Exchange;” not coincidentally, Favre said he believes the meeting had been planned by “ESPN and/or NFL Films.”

“There are athletes from all sports; generally, it’s retired guys. So, you encounter a lot of different guys, but I had no clue, and I really think that was a setup by ESPN and/or NFL Films,” Favre told Mihcele Tafoya on her podcast.

Favre said he had spotted a camera “hiding” above a “divider,” and admitted he had been a bit worried.

“He actually came right to the table – he’s still a big guy. . . .Honestly, I was thinking, the last thing I want to have to do is fight this guy right here,” Favre said.

The Hall of Fame QB added that he felt Gastineau “wasn’t all there” due to his history of concussions.

Favre took to X shortly after the confrontation went viral, in an attempt to “clear the air,” admitting that it “maybe” had “crossed my mind to help Strahan,” but he was not trying to “hurt” Gastineau.

“I booted out of a run thinking it would be wide open, saw Strahan standing there and ducked down. The game was over. There was no need for me to do anything spectacular. It probably wasn’t Michael’s best sack or tackle for loss. In a different game or situation, I would have made a bigger effort to avoid the sack or TFL. But at no point was I thinking about hurting Gastineau,” Favre pleaded.

Favre added that the incident was “not the kind of moment that should be filmed and released.”

Former NFL quarterback Brett Favre has come forward to address the viral video that surfaced earlier this week showing a heated confrontation between him and former New York Jets player Mark Gastineau about the NFL sack record.

In an interview with ESPN, Favre revealed that the confrontation was actually a “setup” orchestrated by a mutual friend in an attempt to generate buzz and create drama surrounding the record. Favre clarified that there was no bad blood between him and Gastineau, and that the two have always had a friendly and respectful relationship.

“I want to set the record straight and let everyone know that what was captured on video was not a real argument,” Favre explained. “It was all in good fun and meant to entertain. Mark and I have always had a great relationship and there is no animosity between us.”

Favre went on to express his admiration for Gastineau’s accomplishments on the football field, stating that he has always respected him as a player and a competitor. He also extended an olive branch to Gastineau, inviting him to join him for a friendly game of golf in the near future.

While the video may have sparked controversy and speculation, it seems that all is well between Favre and Gastineau. As for the NFL sack record, Favre holds the title with 525 career sacks, a record that is unlikely to be broken anytime soon.

  • 15 Points From History: Ejim eyes Gonzaga’s all-time scoring record on the road next Thursday | All Gonzaga Sports

SPOKANE, Wash. — The Gonzaga women rallied past the Pacific Tigers, 68-64, Thursday afternoon in a game that saw guard Yvonne Ejim come within 15 points of breaking the school’s all-time scoring record.

Ejim led all scorers with 23 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, finishing 15 points shy of surpassing Heather Bowman’s record of 2,165 career points.

The guard battled foul trouble early, picking up her fourth foul with 20 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Although she spent most of the fourth quarter on the bench, Ejim returned with fewer than five minutes remaining and dominated down the stretch.

Gonzaga head coach Lisa Fortier praised her squad’s resilience during Ejim’s absence.

“Our team did a really nice job of weathering that storm when she was out. That’s something we talk about all the time,” Fortier said. “She is certainly the leader in charge, but we have a lot of other players who play really well. I certainly don’t like it when she’s out of the game, but I like to have her as an option because I think we play really well together when she’s in, too.”

Gonzaga fans would love nothing more than to see Ejim break the record at home when Gonzaga hosts Washington State next Saturday. However, the Bulldogs will head to Saint Mary’s next Thursday, and her teammates would rather she continue her dominance than save the record for a home game.

“Please don’t only score 14 next game just to get it here,” Gonzaga freshman guard Allie Turner said with a laugh.

When asked if she would rather break the record at home, Ejim said she doesn’t care where it happens — just that it does.

“I’ve thought about that [breaking it at home vs. on the road] in the back of my head. I’d like it to be at home, but again, we just got to play basketball and I don’t get a say in it. It would be cool to do it in the Kennel, but I just want to do it for Gonzaga, so I do care. But I don’t really care, I can’t really care,” she said with a smile.

The Bulldogs will hit the road to face Saint Mary’s on Thursday before returning home to host Washington State at 2 p.m. You can watch Gonzaga vs. Washington State live on SWX and stream it on SWXLocalSports.com.

Taylor Swift‘s 2023 album Lover: Live From Paris was recently reissued on vinyl, leading to it reentering the Billboard Top 200 at #2. It also let Taylor snatch a new chart record.

The album debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart, which ranks albums based on traditional album sales, as opposed to streaming or downloading. That marks her 15th chart-topper on that tally, which means she passes Jay-Z for the most number ones on that chart. The rapper scored 14 number ones on that tally, which has existed for 33 years, between 1998 and 2017.

The original version of Lover: Live From Paris came out as a limited-edition heart-shaped vinyl record that was only available through Taylor’s online store. At the time, it peaked at #58 on the Billboard 200 and #5 on the Top Album Sales chart. It was recorded in September 2019 in Paris and was the last live show she performed before the Eras Tour started in 2023.

  • Sharks have ‘played a little better than our record,’ GM says

The Sharks’ average age is 27.91, making them the ninth-youngest team in the NHL. Grier signed veteran free agent forwards Tyler Toffoli, 32, and Alexander Wennberg, 30, to help mentor younger players such as Celebrini.

Toffoli has 31 points (17 goals, 14 assists) in 50 games; Wennberg has 23 points (eight goals, 15 assists) in 52 games.

“I think the veterans have done a good job of keeping the group together,” Grier said. “They are a lot of the guys setting an example. I think they also feed off the energy of the young guys. I think Mack and Will [Smith] come in every day, and [Fabian] Zetterlund and [William] Eklund, they come in and they work. For young kids, they’ve been able to kind of put losses behind them and show up and be ready to work and have fun.

“As an older player, I think it’s almost contagious to have some of that exuberance of someone who’s not, you know, 29-, 30-years-old and been beaten down by the League, and maybe not guys take for granted being in NHL. But these young kids, every day, it’s like Christmas for them. They wake up, they’re excited to come to the rink and be in the League. It’s worn off on our group. It’s a positive for sure.”

Despite being last in the League standings, Grier said he’s pleased with 37-year-old Ryan Warsfosky, who is in his first season as coach after being an assistant the previous two seasons.

“I think Warsofsky has done a really good job, I think his staff’s doing a good job,” Grier said. “I think from right away from Day 1 in camp, I think you guys saw the up-tempo of the pace and pushing guys to work and give more. I think he holds these guys to a standard of competitiveness and work ethic. He’s also installed some structure in a system that the guys are trying to grow into and play. He’s been good. I think he’s done a good job.

“We’re a young team, and we have young players playing key moments and a lot of minutes. I think he’s done a good job communicating with those guys and helping develop them and, at the same time, making sure that the veterans and the older guys feel valued and important.”

Warsofsky also coached four seasons in the American Hockey League prior to his arrival with the Sharks. He won the Calder Cup as an assistant with Charlotte in 2019, then with Chicago as head coach in 2022.

“I think I’ve grown a lot,” Warsofsky said. “I’ve got more experience in the 53 games now of what the expectation is in our group each and every night. I’ve grown with living with some results, which can be extremely frustrating, especially when we’re in hockey games.

“[I’m] learning how hard it is to win this league. It’s something that our group is learning, [and] myself is learning.”

Sharks have ‘played a little better than our record,’ GM says

Despite their current record, San Jose Sharks General Manager Doug Wilson believes that the team has actually been performing better than their win-loss record shows.

In a recent interview, Wilson stated, “I think we’ve played a little better than our record indicates. We’ve had some tough breaks and some close losses, but I truly believe that we have the talent and the drive to turn things around.”

The Sharks have faced some tough competition this season and have been plagued by injuries to key players. However, Wilson remains optimistic about the team’s potential and is confident that they have what it takes to make a strong push in the second half of the season.

With a roster full of talented players and a coaching staff dedicated to success, the Sharks are determined to prove their doubters wrong and climb up the standings. Only time will tell if they can live up to Wilson’s belief that they have been playing better than their record indicates.

  • Wrexham sign Reading striker Sam Smith in club record transfer

Wrexham have broken their transfer record to sign Reading striker Sam Smith.

The 26-year-old has signed a contract until the summer of 2028 after the two League One clubs agreed an undisclosed fee.

Phil Parkinson has been keen to add a striker for the last two transfer windows as the club owned by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney chase an unprecedented third consecutive promotion.

Smith arrives at the SToK Cae Ras with 11 goals in 25 league appearances to his name this season for Reading.

Wrexham’s joint top scorers with six goals apiece are central defender Max Cleworth and midfielder Elliot Lee, one ahead of Jack Marriott who has only recently returned from a broken leg.

“Sam’s a player we’ve been pursuing for a while,” says Parkinson. “He’s a striker who’s done really well over the last few seasons and he’s at a great age.

“He’s a fantastic addition to the squad.”

Wrexham’s previous transfer record fee stands at the £590,000 fee paid for West Bromwich Albion striker Mo Faal last summer.

Smith is expected to be the first of two further additions before the window closes on Monday at 11pm. Wrexham are understood to be keen on another forward.

Smith came through the Reading academy but left to join Cambridge United in 2021. He returned to the Select Car Leasing Stadium two years later.

“I’m excited to be a part of the journey now and I want to try and help the club achieve its ambitions,” he said.

The Welsh club had previously targeted Sheffield Wednesday striker Michael Smith, making a big play for the 32-year-old last summer. But the Championship club were reluctant to let Smith leave in the last two windows.

  • Liverpool can continue brilliant goalscoring record as Mo Salah eyes Frank Lampard – Liverpool FC

Liverpool head to Bournemouth knowing they are up against the Premier League‘s most in-form team, who have scored 16 goals in their last four top-flight matches.

Bournemouth vs. Liverpool at the Dean Court promises goals aplenty, but then so did the Reds’ recent narrow 2-0 win at Brentford.

What we can guarantee, though, is that both teams will be confident in their own abilities going into the game, and neither will be willing to compromise too much on their principles.

Bournemouth‘s attacking trio of Justin Kluivert, Dango Ouattara and Antoine Semenyo have scored 14 goals between them in their last four matches, netting six, five and three respectively in that time.

The Cherries’ best-ever top-flight points tally came last season when they managed a total of 48 points, ensuring a finish of 12th. They currently have 40 points with 15 matches still to play.

Andoni Iraola’s team are currently 13 points better off than at the same stage of last season’s campaign. They are currently on a club record 11-match unbeaten run in top-flight football (seven wins and four draws).

Liverpool aren’t in bad shape themselves, though, of course.

The Reds have won all 14 league games this season when they have scored the game’s first goal and have won 23 of 24 such matches in all competitions.

They are unbeaten in their last 18 league games (13 wins and five draws) since the 1-0 home loss to Nottingham Forest in September.

Mo Salah moving up the charts

As ever, another game brings another chance for Mo Salah to move up the various goalscoring charts.

The Egyptian is the highest scorer in the history of this fixture, with nine goals in 11 appearances.

One more goal would see Liverpool’s No. 11 join Frank Lampard in joint-sixth on the Premier League‘s highest goalscorers list, with 177 goals.

He also needs to score just once to register 20 league goals in a season for the club for the fifth time and the first occasion since 2021-22.

Salah is fourth on Liverpool’s all-time list of top goalscorers, seven behind Gordon Hodgson who managed 241 in 377 appearances from 1926 to 1935.

Liverpool can continue their brilliant goalscoring record as Mo Salah eyes Frank Lampard’s Premier League goal tally.

With Mo Salah in sensational form this season, Liverpool fans are hopeful that the Egyptian forward can continue to light up the Premier League and potentially break Frank Lampard’s impressive goal tally of 177 goals.
