Cavs continue their redemption arc by trouncing the Hawks, 137-115
CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Cavs (39-9) continued their redemption arc on Thursday at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse with a 137-115 victory over the Atlanta Hawks.
Coming into the week on a three-game losing skid, the Cavs had the opportunity to get back at two of the nine teams that had previously bested them this season. They handled them both, the latest coming against the Hawks, one of two teams to beat the Cavs twice during their 2024-25 campaign.
“I was expecting us to be stuck in mud tonight,” head coach Kenny Atkinson said postgame after the Cavs’ second game of a back-to-back. “… I’m like, ‘Man, if we don’t have to juice against this team, this could be a long night.’ And we had the juice. It surprised me a little with the schedule we’ve had. But there’s a mental toughness to that.”
After the All-Star reserves were announced around 30 minutes before tipoff on Thursday, it was apparent that Trae Young, who was left off the list of players making the trip to San Francisco, was not satisfied with the result. He attempted to take it out on the Cavs. It didn’t pan out how he might have hoped.
Atlanta raced out to a 5-0 lead to start the game, but it would hold that lead for under four minutes before the Cavs regained the lead and never relinquished control.
The Cavs’ biggest first-half issue? Fouling.
They racked up 14 personals, gifting Atlanta 20 free throws — nearly a quarter of the Hawks’ 63 first-half points.
The Cavs’ priority coming into the third period was to limit their fouling while still protecting the paint.
In the third, Cleveland limited Atlanta to just five free-throw attempts while outscoring the Hawks 39-21.
“As I was walking in [for halftime], they were talking amongst themselves, ‘Man, we got to keep these guys off the free throw line,” Atkinson said of the accountability from his players. “If we do that, we’ll have a good chance of winning the game. And we showed more discipline.
“Only seven free throws in the second half. That was big.”
Young and the Hawks were without several of their key pieces, including Jalen Johnson (torn labrum) and Clint Capela (back spasms). Atlanta’s point guard tried to shoulder the scoring load, but he scored just 15 points on 5 of 16 shooting from the field. He added 10 assists while committing two turnovers, and he made just one bucket in the second half.
Cleveland utilized the 2-3 zone to deter Young from getting into the paint and having options to create.
“I felt like we kind of kept him on the sidelines,” Atkinson said of containing Young. “When he gets in the middle, he kind of has everything. He’s got the lob, he’s got the kick to the corner, so we really made an effort to pin him, try to keep him, we call it down, keep him on the sidelines.
“That’s a little bit of an adjustment for us. We sent drag screens and all that, middle, tonight we said we’re going to just push him down. So I definitely think that helped.”
The Cavs’ three All-Stars took center stage. Mitchell, already named a starter, had Garland and Mobley join him as reserves just before tipoff — then the trio played like it.
They combined for 66 points.
Even when missing Dean Wade (knee), Caris LeVert (wrist), and Isaac Okoro (shoulder), the supporting cast pushed the Cavs over the edge. In total, the Cavs had seven players score in double figures, three scoring 20 or more points. Ty Jerome anchored a bench unit that contributed 51 points, finishing with 20 points and six assists. It marked Jerome’s 13th career 20-point performance — seven of which have come this season.
The Cavs’ top-ranked offense isn’t just firing on all cylinders — it’s orchestrating a masterpiece. With 35 assists on 53 made shots, their ball movement was poetry in motion, keeping everyone engaged and the Hawks scrambling.
“I think it’s the feedback I get the most from other coaches, which is cool,” Atkinson said of their ball movement. “Your colleagues said ‘Man, you guys moved the ball, wow. You share it. You’re so connected.’
“You got to have the willingness to do it, share it, but our skill level is super high. That makes it easier. Quite honestly tonight we didn’t really call many any plays. That’s just them out there hoopin.”
While the Hawks weren’t at full strength and won’t be for the remainder of the season due to Johnson’s season-ending surgery, the Cavs continue to show how demoralizing they can be for opposing teams as they suffocate them on defense while effortlessly dismantling them on offense.
Cleveland made the most of its final shot at the Hawks, showing that even when shorthanded, it can adapt, adjust, and execute. That ability to learn on the fly isn’t just fueling regular-season success — it’s the kind of edge that defines playoff teams.
Up Next
The Cavs continue their three-game homestand against the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday with tipoff set for 3:30 p.m. Eastern at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.
The Cleveland Cavaliers seem to be on a mission to redeem themselves this season, and they took another step towards that goal with a dominant 137-115 victory over the Atlanta Hawks. The Cavs came out firing on all cylinders, with their offense clicking on all fronts. Collin Sexton led the charge with 29 points, while Darius Garland added 25 points and 10 assists. Jarrett Allen chipped in with a double-double of 20 points and 14 rebounds.
Defensively, the Cavaliers were also locked in, holding the Hawks to just 115 points and forcing 17 turnovers. They were able to disrupt Atlanta’s rhythm and capitalize on their mistakes, turning defense into easy buckets on the other end.
This win was a statement for the Cavaliers, showing that they are a force to be reckoned with in the Eastern Conference. With their redemption arc in full swing, the Cavs are proving that they are a team to watch out for as the season progresses.

Al-Ittihad Aims For Redemption Against Al-Kholood
Al-Ittihad FC is gearing up for their Saudi Pro League clash against Al-Kholood FC on Saturday, February 1, 2025. The match will be held at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium, where Al-Ittihad hopes to capitalize on their home advantage. Currently sitting second on the league table with 43 points, Al-Ittihad is eager to bounce back after suffering a recent defeat at the hands of Damac FC.
Al-Ittihad has shown remarkable form at home, winning all nine of their matches at King Abdullah Sports City this season. Their recent victory against Al-Raed followed by another against Al-Shabab set the stage for what was expected to be another strong performance, but the loss to Damac has left them aiming for redemption. Key player Karim Benzema, who has been sensational this season, scored his 13th goal of the campaign last week and is expected to lead the charge against Al-Kholood.
Al-Kholood, on the other hand, arrives at the match with renewed confidence after securing three victories from their last four games, including a notable 2-1 win over Al-Raed. Currently positioned 11th with 19 points, they will rely on their top scorer, Myziane Maolida, who has found the net six times this season, to upset the strong hosts.
Every meeting of these two sides offers insights; they faced off twice before, with Al-Ittihad winning once and the other match ending in a draw. This history seems to favor Al-Ittihad, who are determined to maintain their momentum at home as they chase the top spot against league leaders Al-Hilal.
With Al-Ittihad’s current form—14 wins, 1 draw, and only 2 losses from 17 matches—it’s evident they are the favorites going forward. Analysts also point out Al-Kholood’s flaws, especially defensively, as they have allowed 29 goals throughout their season, contrasting sharply with Al-Ittihad’s impressive goal difference of +26.
This match promises goals; betting analysts suggest considering wagers on both teams scoring, as Al-Ittihad has netted over 2.5 goals frequently this season. The statistics reveal Al-Ittihad’s dominance, with Karim Benzema expected to again be on the score sheet, reflecting his current scoring streak which has seen him net goals consistently across matches.
Kick-off for the match will occur at 6:00 PM local time. Fans will be watching closely to see if Al-Ittihad can retaliate from last week’s defeat and if Al-Kholood can continue their impressive turn of form against one of the league’s most credible contenders.
Given the current standing and performance metrics of both teams, predictions lean heavily toward an Al-Ittihad victory, possibly with over 2.5 goals scored during the match. This encounter is not just pivotal for league standings but throws light on the shifting dynamics of the Saudi Pro League as both teams vie for important points as the season progresses.
Al-Ittihad, the once dominant football club in the Saudi Professional League, is on a mission for redemption as they face off against Al-Kholood in their upcoming match. After a disappointing season that saw them finish in the bottom half of the table, Al-Ittihad is determined to bounce back and reclaim their status as one of the top teams in the league. With a new coach at the helm and a revamped squad, they are ready to show their fans that they are capable of competing at the highest level once again.
Their opponents, Al-Kholood, have also had their struggles in recent years but have shown signs of improvement in the past season. This match will be a test for both teams to see where they stand and to prove their worth in the league.
Al-Ittihad will be looking to make a statement with a convincing win over Al-Kholood, showing that they are back and ready to challenge for the title. The players are fired up and motivated to give their all on the pitch and come out victorious.
Fans of Al-Ittihad are excited to see their team back in action and are hopeful that this match will be the start of a successful season. With their support behind them, the players are ready to fight for the win and show that they are a force to be reckoned with.
Stay tuned for what promises to be an exciting and intense match as Al-Ittihad aims for redemption against Al-Kholood. Let’s see if they can rise to the occasion and prove that they are still a powerhouse in Saudi football.

#AlIttihad #Aims #Redemption #AlKholoodThere’s an opportunity for redemption
Kentucky basketball fans are ball-knowers. We can be honest with one another about our Wildcats without getting out the torches and pitchforks, so please, keep your lighters far away from your torches when I state the following.
Mark Pope just had his worst week on the job at Kentucky.
It started with a loss at home to Alabama. There’s no shame in losing to a top-five team, but Kentucky let a late lead slip away thanks to a 9-0 run from the Crimson Tide.
A few days later, Pope took his first recruiting L as the Kentucky head coach. Even though the writing was on the wall down the stretch, losing a player of Caleb Wilson‘s caliber stinks. There’s no other way to put it.
After the recruiting loss, Kentucky went on the road and lost to Vanderbilt. I don’t care how good this iteration of Vanderbilt is, it stinks to lose to that school in any sport. Just like the Alabama game, Kentucky had a late lead and couldn’t close out the Commodores. Vandy students celebrated by rushing the court.
To top it all off, Lamont Butler and Andrew Carr are arguably Kentucky’s two most important players. They’re both injured to varying degrees that are currently unknown. Butler looked like a completely different player in Nashville and we just learned that he’s going to miss the Tennessee game. Carr was absent at Vandy and will be on the sideline for who knows how long.
These facts are hard to argue with. Mark Pope just had his worst seven-day stretch as the Kentucky basketball coach.
Good News: Two Kentucky Wins Can Erase The Bad Week
As bad as those seven days were, Mark Pope has an opportunity to be the equalizer this week.
Kentucky can win its first basketball game in 14 days by upsetting Tennessee on the road. That’s a rivalry game where their head coach has a winning record over you. As impossible as it may feel in this moment, these Cats have an incredibly high ceiling and have been at their as underdogs, winning all three games outright away from Rupp. When the offense is firing, they’re hard to beat and it’s really, really hard for Tennessee to score.
A win over the Vols would provide so much satisfaction to fans who hate that school so much. A win over John Calipari would deliver just as many good feelings, if not more, around Big Blue Nation.
Good wins do not completely erase bad losses, but this incredibly challenging SEC schedule gives you plenty of chances to forget about those losses. A 2-0 week would quickly put Kentucky fans back on Cloud Nine. Conversely, I don’t want to think about how we’ll feel if Mark Pope has an 0-2 week.

There’s an opportunity for redemptionIn life, we all make mistakes. We all have moments where we fall short of our own expectations and the expectations of others. But the beauty of life is that there is always an opportunity for redemption.
No matter how far we may have strayed from the right path, no matter how deep we may have sunk into our mistakes, there is always a chance to make things right. It may not be easy, it may require hard work and dedication, but it is possible.
Redemption is not about erasing the past or pretending that the mistakes never happened. It is about acknowledging our faults, taking responsibility for our actions, and doing everything in our power to make amends.
So if you find yourself in a place where you feel like you have lost your way, remember that there is always an opportunity for redemption. It may require humility, forgiveness, and a willingness to change, but it is never too late to turn things around.
Embrace the opportunity for redemption, and let it guide you back to the person you truly want to be.

#opportunity #redemptionThe star who benefitted most from ‘The Shawshank Redemption’
(Credits: Far Out / YouTube Still)
At this point, it is Hollywood folklore that The Shawshank Redemption was widely ignored upon its initial release in 1994. The movie, which went on to become one of the most beloved motion pictures ever made, cobbled together a scant $16million at the US box office in its first run. However, after being nominated for a host of Oscars, it was re-released, and this bumped box office takings up to $73m.
In 1995, it became the number one VHS rental in the country, and over the years, it turned into one of the most oft-repeated films on cable TV. This cultural ubiquity meant Shawshank increased and maintained its popularity for decades, leading to healthy residual payments for many of its key players. You may be surprised to find out which actor from the film reckons he benefitted the most, though.
When Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins spent three months shooting Shawshank in the Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield, Ohio, they could scarcely have predicted its enduring legacy. Both stars have undoubtedly made out like bandits as the decades wore on. Warner Bros Home Entertainment executive Jeff Baker told The Wall Street Journal, “It’s an incredible moneymaking asset that continues to resonate with viewers.”
However, it is one of the film’s supporting players who has always been most grateful for the enduring cheques he receives yearly – which even climbed near the six-figure mark around the film’s 10th anniversary in 2004. In fact, he explained that his Shawshank residuals have always amounted to “a very substantial income” that has had a much longer life than he expected. “I suspect my daughter, years from now, will still be getting cheques,” he smiled.
Although the actor in question isn’t one of the film’s leads, he did play arguably the third most important character. In fact, when Bob Gunton auditioned for the movie, he knew the part of sadistic prison warden Samuel Norton was much better than the usual roles he went out for.
“It’s one of the few movies where I got a lot of screen time and also great scenes,” Gunton told The AV Club in 2015.
(Credits: Far Out / Columbia Pictures) Fittingly, because the part was so integral to the film, producers wanted to hire a more established star, but director Frank Darabont, cinematographer Roger Deakins, and Robbins cooked up a screentest to convince the studio Gunton was the right man for the job. Thankfully, to his eternal relief, he got a call saying, “You’re on. They want you.”
Heartwarmingly, Gunton’s Shawshank experience has lasted far longer than the couple of months he spent in Ohio – and not just in terms of the financial rewards. “I’m sure that, unless the gods come down from heaven with another marvellous movie, that will be the movie that I will probably be remembered for and that I am most proud of,” Gunton said. He then revealed that everywhere he goes, he meets Shawshank devotees.
“Recently, I was in South America doing a movie about the Chilean miners,” Gunton explained, “and down there, people would come up to me with their words of homage for the movie.” He also claimed he has met people in far-flung locations like Europe, Morocco, and Australia who told him how meaningful the film was to them. It means a lot for a working character actor like Gunton to be a part of something that “has become such a cult and has such devotion around the world.”
All in all, the long-tailed dominance of a movie like Shawshank is a testament to Hollywood letting certain films find their audiences over time and then supporting them. However, it’s also a damning indictment of the modern media landscape, which has massively minimised residuals for actors.
You see, in the streaming era, where streamers measure subscriber numbers instead of how many people watch a specific movie or show, it’s become much harder to ascertain exactly how many people watch things. Consequently, residual cheques have tapered off significantly for most actors, and in an industry where many don’t work all year round, this has removed a vital safety net for fallow periods.
It all begs the question: would an actor like Gunton stand any chance of benefitting from a long-running Shawshank-esque success if it had been made in 2024 instead of 1994? Sadly, the answer is, ‘Probably not.’

The star who benefitted most from ‘The Shawshank Redemption’When ‘The Shawshank Redemption’ was released in 1994, it received critical acclaim but didn’t perform well at the box office. However, over the years, it has become a beloved classic and one of the most highly regarded films of all time. And while the movie has many talented actors in its cast, one star who benefitted the most from its success is Tim Robbins.
Tim Robbins, who played the lead role of Andy Dufresne, delivered a powerful and unforgettable performance in the film. His portrayal of the wrongly convicted banker who finds hope and redemption in prison earned him critical acclaim and a new level of recognition in Hollywood.
After ‘The Shawshank Redemption,’ Robbins went on to star in a number of successful films, including ‘The Player,’ ‘Mystic River,’ and ‘Dead Man Walking,’ for which he won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. His career has continued to flourish, and he has proven himself to be a versatile and talented actor.
‘The Shawshank Redemption’ may not have been a box office hit when it was first released, but its enduring popularity and critical acclaim have helped to solidify Tim Robbins’ status as a Hollywood star. His performance in the film remains one of his most iconic roles, and it is clear that he benefitted greatly from being a part of this timeless classic.

32 Random Thoughts I Had While Rewatching The Shawshank Redemption
As a kid, my parents’ movie library was an important resource for my cinematic education. And you could bet that we had a copy of The Shawshank Redemption on VHS, just waiting for me to eventually one of the best ‘90s movies to ever exist. Upon rewatching Frank Darabont’s iconic Stephen King adaptation, I certainly had some thoughts, and they further proved why this movie has endured.
(Image credit: Castle Rock Entertainment) I’m Kind Of Surprised Andy Dufresne Was Even Convicted
I know if Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) doesn’t get convicted of murdering his wife and her lover, there’s no Shawshank Redemption. But between our protagonist’s profession, and the infidelities being visited upon him, do you seriously mean to tell me a 1950s jury wouldn’t side with these implied actions?
(Image credit: Warner Bros.) I Can’t Think Of Anyone Else Playing Andy Or Red
Here’s a piece of Shawshank Redemption trivia you may not have known: Tom Cruise and Harrison Ford were among the potential pairs considered to play Andy and Red. I’m all for considering “what if…” scenarios when it comes to classic films, but I honestly can’t think of anyone else matching the chemistry of Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman’s friendship on screen.
(Image credit: Castle Rock Entertainment) The Shawshank Redemption’s Casting Game Has Always Been Strong
Every time I watch this movie, I swear I notice new actors that I either forgot or hadn’t noticed were part of the cast. This time around I “discovered” that Robocop and E.R. vet Paul McCrane was one of the guards, and was reminded that 24’s Jude Ciccolella was also a screw at Shawshank. Meanwhile, every go-round reminds me how I’ll always recognize Jeffrey DeMunn after his short but powerful turn as the lawyer who sends Andy up the river.
(Image credit: Good Morning America YouTube) Stephen King Knows How To Write Grounded Adult Fairy Tales
While Red (Morgan Freeman) delivers the line “Prison is no fairy tale world” in The Shawshank Redemption, I still consider it an example of realism meeting such morally tinged fables for adults. The fact that Stephen King would not only go on to write The Green Mile as a sort of “Shawshank meets magical thinking” heartbreaker, with Frank Darabont returning for its 1999 adaptation, only proves my point.
(Image credit: Castle Rock Entertainment) Bob Gunton’s Introduction Is So Subtly Chilling
Throughout the entirety of this prison drama, we see Bob Gunton’s Warden Samuel Norton barely raise his voice, except for when he discovers Andy’s escape. Revisiting his chilling introduction through Andy Dufrense’s arrival at Shawshank, I was reminded that vocal hysterics are no match for wielding a bible, and knowing how to hurt someone with just a nod.
(Image credit: Castle Rock Entertainment) Jake Is One Of The Many Clever Ways The Passage Of Time Is Shown At Shawshank
Most movies show time passing with either obvious dialogue or handy title cards. There are moments in The Shawshank Redemption where dialogue helps contextualize when we are in the story, but it’s never clunky. Also, with the added device of Jake the crow growing from a baby to a full-grown buddy, we’re shown progress without needing to put a calendar right under our noses.
(Image credit: Columbia Pictures) Clancy Brown Plays The Line Between Menace And Authority To A Tee
When your kids are old enough, show them The Shawshank Redemption, then a random episode of Spongebob Squarepants. It’ll blow their minds by connecting Mr. Brown’s roles of Byron Hadley and Mr. Krabs, and it’s only another example of versatile performers filling Frank Darabont’s cast. While he’s not always turned up to 11, the shifts between unchecked menace and simple authority are so seamless.
(Image credit: Castle Rock Entertainment) I Wish I Could Tell You Andy Dufresne’s First Encounter With The Sisters Wasn’t Tragic
One of the emotional moments that never fails to maintain its tragedy is when Bogs (Mark Rolston) and the rest of The Sisters gang up on Andy in the prison laundry. We don’t see the brutality, relying on Morgan Freeman’s narration to confirm that the worst had indeed happened. Each time that scene comes on, expect your heart to sink.
(Image credit: Columbia Pictures) The Roofing Crew Scene May Be The Best Scene In The Shawshank Redemption
If there is one scene that ties all of The Shawshank Redemption’s perfection into a subtle package, it’s when Andy and his fellow prisoners enjoy that cold bohemian beer after tarring a roof. It’s idyllic, visually stunning, and gives the audience the same temporary moment of unbridled joy as Andy Dufresne. Other moments may be more pronounced, but the joy truly sneaks up on you every time, even if it’s a consequence of Brooks Hadley threatening to cause Andy “accidental” harm.
(Image credit: Castle Rock Entertainment) Thomas Newman Really Poured His Heart Into The Shawshank Redemption Score
Andy’s escape into the rain. Red’s arrival on the beach in Zihuatanejo. Brooks’ sad end. All of those moments are cinematic history in The Shawshank Redemption, and their perfection is aided by composer Thomas Newman’s emotionally charged musical score. Good luck trying to drive if “Brooks Was Here” comes up on shuffle.
(Image credit: ABC) The Shawshank Redemption Helped Me See Beyond Stephen King’s Horror Writing
Growing up, I was introduced to Stephen King as “The Master of Horror.” That image only grew through my eventual initiation through watching miniseries like 1990’s IT. But when I saw that The Shawshank Redemption was written by the same man who masterminded such frights, it was a watershed moment that helped me look past the stereotype and love the man’s work even more.
(Image credit: CBS) If Anyone Should Have Remade The Stand, It Should Have Been Frank Darabont
Mick Garris’ 1994 miniseries adaptation of The Stand, in my mind, has never been topped. I’ve slowly slogged through the 2020 Paramount+ remake, and with all due respect to the talent involved, it pales in comparison. But now that I’ve rewatched The Shawshank Redemption, I can’t help but wish that Frank Darabont’s Randall Flagg easter egg led to an alternate universe where he got to do his thing with the epic clash between the disciples of The Walkin’ Dude and Mother Abigail.
(Image credit: Castle Rock Entertainment) Brooks’ “Easy Peasy” Line Holds Up, Even If It’s Of Questionable Taste
“Easy peasy, Japanese-y.” I know it’s not a terribly offensive line, but hearing the sweet Brooks Hadlen (James Whitmore) utter that line always gave me pause. Upon this most recent viewing, however, I realized that this line is another clever way of showing character. Thanks to the institutionalization of Brooks, we get a window into what the world was like when he was a free man; back when that sort of phrase was probably more prevalent.
(Image credit: Castle Rock Entertainment) Andy’s Story Doesn’t Forget To Include Moments Of Levity
I’ll never look at a copy of Alexandre Dumas’ The Count of Monte Cristo without thinking of William Sadler, Tim Robbins, and Morgan Freeman debating where to file it in the prison library. Humor and warmth go hand in hand with tragedy and tears in The Shawshank Redemption, allowing for organic breaks from the harsh realities of incarceration. Frank Darabont’s sensibilities as the writer/director of this film are sharp as the rock hammer Andy uses to get his freedom, knowing when to lean into either extreme.
(Image credit: Castle Rock Entertainment) No Letter Writing Campaign Could Ever Beat Andy Dufrense’s Quest For Books
A former friend of mine and I used to love referencing the moment when Andy Dufrense petitioned his local government officials for better resources in Shawshank’s prison library. As someone who loves a good story where a dedicated fanbase gets something done through letter-writing, I have to say that Dufrense’s triumph is probably the greatest example of this time-tested form of protest winning the day.
(Image credit: Warner Bros) How In The Name Of Castle Rock Did The Shawshank Redemption Bomb At The Box Office?
The weekend of September 23, 1994, had some pretty decent movies in the box office top 10…and somehow The Shawshank Redemption wasn’t one of them. That’s right, the only reason we’re still talking about this picture is thanks to video rentals and constant airings on TNT in the years that followed. How did people let this happen?!
(Image credit: Castle Rock Entertainment) Shawshank Is A Masterclass In Patient Storytelling
In a little under two and a half hours, you really feel like you’ve gotten to know Andy Dufresne and some of his pals at Shawshank State Prison. It consistently amazes me that I can still feel this way about a movie I’ve watched frequently over its three decades of existence. There’s never a moment where it feels like you could either skip or fast forward to the next, putting the pacing in that sweet spot where you don’t want it to end, but can’t think of anything to add.
(Image credit: Castle Rock Entertainment) William Sadler Really Is One Of The Best Actors We Have
I originally thought that The Shawshank Redemption proved that William Sadler was one of the best character actors on the scene. Upon further thought, I’d say he’s one of the best performers out there, period. The dude’s range has seen him hang with the Crypt Keeper, tangle with John McClane, and try to reap the souls of Bill and Ted. Watching him as Heywood always puts a smile on my face, because how can you begrudge a man just listening to his Hank Williams records?
(Image credit: Castle Rock Entertainment) Brooks’ Epilogue Still Crushes My Heart Every Single Time
You don’t even have to show a person the entirety of this film to bring them to tears. While having the background on Brooks’ character does make his eventual fate all the more tragic, you could merely show them his final scenes on the outside of Shawshank. No matter how many times I see James Whitmore play the end to his arc, I always hope that Jake found Brooks somehow, somewhere far away from that pain.
(Image credit: Castle Rock Entertainment) This Movie Pivots Perfectly Between Emotional Ups And Downs
In the span of a handful of minutes, The Shawshank Redemption goes from Brooks’ tragic suicide to Andy’s triumphant book delivery, which then turns to our humble bank manager’s solitary confinement. Just those moments piled on top of each other are an emotional roller coaster, but they all land perfectly, without losing a step to any potential tonal whiplash.
(Image credit: Warner Bros. / Universal Pictures) Frank Darabont Truly Understands Stephen King’s Work
Adapting The Green Mile into a Tom Hanks-starring tear-jerker was the next step in Frank Darabont’s King canon journey, but giving The Mist its soul-crushing ending was probably the greatest sign that Darabont truly understands Stephen King’s work. Especially because according to his own account, Frank Darabont was inspired by King’s original text to get to that traumatizing finale.
(Image credit: Columbia Pictures) You Could Frame That Shot Of Andy Escaping The Tunnels
The moment that Andy Dufrense escapes those tunnels of…waste in The Shawshank Redemption, he bathes in the rain of liberation in a moment you could practically frame and hang on your wall. Considering it went on to become the original poster art for the 1994 release campaign, I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought so.
(Image credit: Warner Bros.) How Is This Picture Only 142 Minutes?
There is no way that The Shawshank Redemption is only a couple minutes short of two and a half hours. It never feels anything shorter than perfect, which is honestly thanks to the pacing of the storytelling and every factor being top-shelf. Honestly, this is probably why The Green Mile would eventually be allowed to slightly exceed the 3-hour mark when it was released.
(Image credit: Castle Rock Entertainment) The Shawshank Redemption Counts As A Heist Movie
I never really thought of Andy Dufresne’s antics as a secret heist movie, but that’s exactly what I came away thinking this time out. Years before Danny Ocean and his ten friends would knock off Las Vegas, Andy used accounting, knowledge of the banking system, and some geological know-how to make his great escape. Is it too late to give Andy a role in the Ocean’s Eleven prequel?
(Image credit: Columbia Pictures) Tommy Williams’ Fate Is Even Crueler Than That Of Brooks Hadlen
If anyone got a worse deal than Brooks Hadlen, it had to be Tommy Williams (Gil Bellows). Sent to prison for burglary, he wasn’t nearly as hardened as some of the criminals who walked the halls of Shawshank State Prison. Yet thanks to his ability to exonerate Andy Dufresne, the young man who could have had a bright future was taken out with another one of Warden Norton’s patented nods.
(Image credit: Castle Rock Entertainment) Roger Deakins’ Cinematography Helped Make This A Timeless Classic
Everyone knows that cinematographer Roger Deakins is a GOAT when it comes to his craft. The Shawshank Redemption is a key piece of proof as to how he’s maintained such a reputation, as his eye helps this picture evade any sort of signs of aging. It looks timeless, and feels just as preserved through never being approached as a “‘90s movie.”
(Image credit: Castle Rock Entertainment) Without Question, Shawshank Is A ‘Remote Drop’ Movie
Thanks to Christopher Nolan’s love for Talladega Nights, the world now knows to call something you can never turn away from on TV a “remote drop” movie. The Shawshank Redemption is absolutely such a gem, as no matter what point in the story you’re at, no matter how many times you’ve seen it before, you’re in for the duration once it’s caught your eye.
(Image credit: Netflix) Frank Darabont Might Actually Get Me To Watch Stranger Things Season 5
I haven’t cared about Stranger Things since completing Season 2, but have kept up with the series as a responsible journalist. I’ll do the same when its final season debuts, but knowing that Frank Darabont came out of retirement to direct a Season 5 episode has given me a smidgen of incentive to finish the journey.
(Image credit: Warner Bros.) I Can’t Believe The Shawshank Redemption Almost Didn’t Show Us Andy And Red’s Reunion
It took notes from a test screening, and the reluctance of Morgan Freeman, to give The Shawshank Redemption an ending where we actually saw Red and Andy reunite on the shores of Zihuatanejo. I refuse to accept a world where that true moment of redemption doesn’t exist.
(Image credit: Castle Rock Entertainment) The Shawshank Redemption Is Still A Perfect Movie
A little over a decade ago, I wrote about perfect Shawshank moments in a bid to show that I felt it was a perfect movie. I stand by my feelings to this day, and I don’t think that’s going to change any time soon.

The 67th Academy Awards in 1995 saw Tom Hanks’ bittersweet nostalgia trip Forrest Gump winning Best Picture. The rest of the field was occupied by Pulp Fiction, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Quiz Show, and The Shawshank Redemption. Is anyone else ready to send someone to Shawshank for letting this happen?

If The Shawshank Redemption was a storybook, I imagine I’d have several copies that are worn to varying degrees. It’s something you can always return to and enjoy freshly while reflecting on those peaks and valleys of emotion that pop up along the way. Which reminds me…I’m long overdue to pick up the 4K disc, even if the cover art isn’t the gorgeous Drew Struzan poster that adorned the Blu-ray set.

Red Dead Redemption 2 and 7 More Hit Games Are Cheaper Than Ever Before
Free Steam games given away all the time, but even after being out for over six years now, Red Dead Redemption 2 has never been free on any platform. And if you can’t get it for free, the next best thing is to get it during the best sale possible which, fortunately for those who haven’t played the Red Dead Redemption sequel yet, is what’s happening right now. Red Dead Redemption 2 has currently dropped down to the lowest price it’s ever reached on Steam, but it’s not alone either. Other massive hits like DOOM and some smaller but still beloved games like Turnip Boy Escapes Tax Evasion are at their lowest prices, too, but not for long.
Videos by ComicBook.com
As is the case with most Steam sales, these games like Red Dead Redemption 2 and Subnautica that are supremely discounted right now aren’t necessarily tied to one blanket sale which means that the discounts end on them at different times. That said, if you’re looking for a new game this weekend, here are eight games on Steam that are as cheap as they’ve ever been.
Red Dead Redemption 2
$14.99 on Steam until February 6th
Starting with the game that needs little introduction, Red Dead Redemption 2 is Rockstar Games’ most recent title barring any kinds of collections or rereleases. Despite it being out for seven years come October, Red Dead Redemption 2 holds up better than ever on the PC platform thanks to PC-exclusive features and a wealth of mods to keep you busy if you get tired of the main story or running down other players in Red Dead Online.
Nioh 2 – The Complete Edition
$24.99 on Steam until February 6th
Nioh 2 – The Complete Edition is the only version of Nioh 2 that’s on Steam, but that works out anyway considering how cheap it is right now. For reference, Nioh 2 costs $39.99 right now on the PlayStation Store without any sales live, but on Steam, you can get the complete version of Nioh 2 for $24.99 which is also the cheapest it’s ever been.
The Complete Edition for Nioh 2 includes the base game as well as several expansions: The Tengu’s Disciple, Darkness in the Capital, and The First Samurai. Those encompass all the DLCs that have been released for Nioh 2, so it doesn’t get more comprehensive than this at this price.
Lords of the Fallen
$19.79 on Steam until February 6th
Lords of the Fallen came out back in 2023, so it’s not the newest game, but certainly not old either if you never got a chance to play it before. It’s been on sale from time to time since then, but this is the first occasion that it’s ever dropped to below $20 before on Steam.
While it’s got “Mixed” reviews overall, the revival of the series of the same name is held in high regard as of late thanks to Hexworks cleaning the game up over time. There’s a Deluxe Edition option, too, with more than just in-game extras, but if simple is what you’re after, the base version of Lords of the Fallen can’t be beat at this price.
Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name
$19.99 on Steam until February 6th
RGG Studio keeps pumping out the Like a Dragon games (or Yakuza games, if you still call them that) with each one often just as well received as the last. The next one up is Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii which comes out on February 20th, but if you need something to hold you over until then, Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name has you covered now that it’s cheaper than ever before at just $19.99.
Children of Morta
$4.39 on Steam until February 3rd
Children of Morta may not enjoy the household-name status of something like Red Dead Redemption 2, but that doesn’t by any means suggest that you should overlook it. The 2019 game has several different bundles and add-ons to keep you busy once you’re done with the core experience, boasts strong reviews on Steam, and costs less than what you’d normally have to pay for a coffee since it’s down to just $4.39 right now.
Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion
$3.29 on Steam until January 26th
Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion is a lot of things on this list of Steam discounts. It’s the oddball of the lineup for sure by the name if nothing else, but it’s also the cheapest game on the list since it’s just $3.29. Unfortunately for those who like to think on what games they’ll play next, you don’t have much time for this once since it’s part of a “daily deal” discount which means that the sale will end on January 26th. If you think playing as a trouble-making turnip for around $3 sounds interesting, however, it’s best to add this one to your backlog now rather than when the sale ends.
DOOM (2016)
$3.99 on Steam until January 30th
Perhaps you saw id Software’s newest game, DOOM: The Dark Ages, during the recent Xbox event and had your DOOM interest renewed ahead of its May release date. If that’s the case, DOOM Eternal is the newest DOOM game that’s able to keep you busy till then. That game is on sale, sure, but it’s not as cheap as DOOM from 2016 which is back down to its lowest price ever recorded at $3.99. DOOM Eternal itself is just $7.99, too, so for just over $10, you’ll be set from now until the release of DOOM: The Dark Ages.
Subnautica
$9.89 on Steam until January 29th
And finally we have another game that’s a standout in the survival genre: Subnautica. While most survival games put you in the middle of a forest somewhere or in some hellish horror scenario, Subnautica subverts by putting players in the middle of a sea expanding every which way, including down. Subnautica 2 is releasing in early access at some point, but until we figure out what’s going on with that game, you can get the original Subnautica for less than $10 so long as you grab it before January ends.
If you’ve been holding out on playing some of the biggest games of the past few years, now is the perfect time to jump in. Red Dead Redemption 2 and seven other hit games are currently on sale for prices lower than ever before. From the sprawling open-world of Red Dead Redemption 2 to the intense first-person shooting of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, there’s something for every type of gamer on this list. And with discounts ranging from 20% to 50% off, there’s never been a better time to add these titles to your collection.
So don’t miss out on this incredible opportunity to experience some of the best games of recent years at a fraction of the cost. Grab your controller, fire up your console or PC, and immerse yourself in the thrilling worlds of these top games today.

#Red #Dead #Redemption #Hit #Games #CheaperRed Wings Out for Redemption Against Lightning
DETROIT—Saturday night, the Detroit Red Wings host the Tampa Bay Lightning at Little Caesars Arena, with an eye toward a stronger performance than last Saturday’s effort in Tampa, when the Bolts rolled for a 5–1 victory.
“I thought we started slow in their rink, just on our heels right from the beginning. It wasn’t our best game,” assessed Detroit defenseman Ben Chiarot after Saturday morning’s pre-game skate. “When we start fast, get on teams, get shots to the net early in the game, get us momentum, I think that’s when we’re at our best, and we didn’t do that in their rink.” That was precisely the sort of start the Red Wings enjoyed Thursday night against the Canadiens, en route to a season-high 45 shots on goal and a 4–2 victory.

Sunday will mark exactly one month since new coach Todd McLellan (and his top assistant Trent Yawney) were hired, but Saturday morning, he stressed that there remain chunks of the game he and Yawney haven’t had the chance to fully imprint their vision on the team.
“There’s a lot of…segments of our game where we’re just figuring things out as a staff and figuring out what we’re doing,” McLellan said Saturday morning. “Trent and I are catching up. I think the day that I got hired, I said there’s no way that we’re gonna be able to adapt or change everything. We just don’t have the practice time…When you take a paint brush and just wipe it all out, it can be dangerous too. There were some really good things that they were doing here before, so we don’t have to fix everything, but there are areas that we still haven’t gotten to.”
One area McLellan has repeatedly emphasized from the moment of his introduction is confidence and spirit. To Chiarot, Detroit’s ability to bounce back from a difficult road trip against the Habs Thursday illustrates McLellan’s success in generating that kind of belief.
“Confidence is everything in sports, I think, and he’s been able to create that within the group,” Chiarot said after morning skate. “And the group has done a good job of taking it and running with it, and when we lose it for a little bit like we did on the trip, getting it right back with things like…getting those shots to the net, playing in the offensive zone, good things happen for us, so it’s been a good lesson for us in how to gain momentum and confidence and how to keep it.”
Detroit will look for that confidence to manifest in another fast start Saturday night against the Lightning (a 7 PM puck drop on FanDuel Sports Network Detroit and 97.1 The Ticket). Per McLellan, the Red Wings will be rolling with the same lineup from Thursday night, down to Cam Talbot in net.

The redemption of Ohio State head coach Ryan Day
CNN
—
Ryan Day aims to have his Ohio State Buckeyes leave no doubt.
After a complete team performance that won the Bucks their first national championship in 10 years, Day should have removed any doubts about his tenure in Columbus in the minds of the Buckeye faithful.
Ohio State fans are some of the toughest and most critical in college football – indeed, some will come away from this 34-23 victory over Notre Dame, now with nine claimed national championships, unhappy that it wasn’t an even bigger win. Day has been the subject of their ire all season. Even as the Buckeyes blew out team after team for much of the season, a one-point loss to Oregon stuck in their collective craw.
And then came the listless loss to Michigan. Boos rained down on Day and his team from their home fans as they were unable to get anything going on offense for much of the game and the truly mediocre Wolverines scored their fourth-straight victory over their arch-rivals.
All that seems a distant memory now. Day has delivered on the promise his team showed most of this season and the talented Buckeyes are now national champions.
“They’re my motivation – my family at home, my wife and kids and then these guys. That’s why I get up every day, to help these guys reach their dreams and goals,” Day said after the game. “That’s all it comes down to, and then also it just shows an example – when things get hard in life, just keep swinging as hard as you can and fight. That’s our culture.”
Day started off this playoff run potentially coaching for his job in the game against Tennessee. It’s hard to overstate just how down-and-out Buckeye fans were after their loss to the Wolverines on November 30 and the ugly scenes following that game when Michigan tried to plant a flag at midfield of Ohio Stadium.
Volunteer fans invaded the Horseshoe for the opening round game, with some estimates saying the crowd was 40% Tennessee fans. ESPN commentator and Buckeye alumni Kirk Herbstreit said during that broadcast that he had never seen anything like it. Pundits were predicting that, if Ohio State lost to the Vols, Day might be out of work despite an incredible start to his head coaching career in Columbus.
After a quarter of play against Tennessee, Day was no longer on the hot seat. Three touchdowns in the first quarter set the tone for the rest of the Buckeye playoff run, a massive lead en route to a total blowout of the Volunteers.
In the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day, it was much the same – even worse, really. By halftime of that one, Ohio State was up 34-8 and the top-seeded, unbeaten Ducks looked like they didn’t belong on the same field as the Buckeyes.
Texas put up more of a challenge, keeping the game close until the final minutes when senior Jack Sawyer stripped UT quarterback Quinn Ewers of the ball and broke away from his former roommate and the rest of the Longhorns for a touchdown that iced the game.
Putting the loss to Michigan behind them was not an easy task, Day said after the win against Tennessee, but it was necessary for the Buckeyes to get moving again toward the ultimate goal of the season: a national title.
“I’ve said this before, nothing that’s happened previously is going to have any effect on what’s going on other than learning from our experiences,” Day told reporters. “The first week was an identification of the issues. You don’t just move on from the game. You have to identify what the issues are and have real conversations with the players, allow them to speak because they’re vested in this. And then coaches have their two cents.
He added, “To say it doesn’t weigh on you, it does. We have a lot of pride in who we are. These guys have a lot of pride.”
Ohio State offensive coordinator Chip Kelly, who’s known Day most of his life, said it was clear that the pressure was weighing on the head coach. But, Kelly said, it wasn’t anything that the 45-year-old couldn’t handle.
“I told him a long time ago he’s built for this. And he understands it. He understands the gravity of what his position is. He understands how everybody feels about Buckeye football and rightly so,” Kelly said after that Tennessee win. “He feels the same exact way. I don’t think anybody took the loss to The Team Up North harder than he took the loss. That’s the type of person he is.
“But he also has to lead from front. It wasn’t, ‘Feel sorry for me,’ and, ‘Hey, is everybody going to pick me up and make me feel better?’ It’s, ‘No, we’ve got to address this the right way, look at what we did on film. We have to figure out how can we correct that.’”
There were some echoes of that loss to Michigan in the final minutes of the game against Notre Dame. Kelly got conservative again with his play-calling. The Irish showed why “fightin’” is in their school’s mascot, charging back from a 31-7 deficit to get within a touchdown and a two-point conversion.
For the first time since the opening quarter, the Buckeyes were facing pressure – real pressure. The play-calling stayed very conservative, with Howard taking a couple quarterback keepers and Notre Dame stopping the clock with their timeouts. But Day and Kelly flipped the script at the last second.
Howard floated a long pass on a go-route down the right sideline by freshman wideout Jeremiah Smith, who leapt and hauled in the 57-yard catch to put the Buckeyes in the Notre Dame red zone with two minutes to go. From there, it was a Jayden Fielder field goal to seal it and Day had his first national championship.
With all the pressure piled on him and all the criticism that made its way into this program a little less than two months ago, it was blatantly obvious how much the win meant to Day. As time ran out, he ran down the sideline and ripped off his headset, tossing it behind him somewhere deep on the Buckeye sideline – if not the stands. He reveled in the Gatorade bath, deep green liquid splashing down around him as he celebrated with his team.
“The story gets to be told now. And it’s a great story. About a bunch of guys that overcome some really tough situations and there was a point where there was a lot of people that counted us out,” Day said.
“We just kept swinging and kept fighting. It’s the reason you get into coaching. It’s to see guys overcome things. Learn life lessons and then reach their dreams. This is what happened tonight.”
Ryan Day, the head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes football team, has faced his fair share of challenges and criticisms during his tenure. From taking over for the legendary Urban Meyer to navigating the uncertainties of the COVID-19 pandemic, Day has had to prove himself time and time again. However, recent events have shown that Day is truly a coach worth believing in. After a disappointing loss to Oregon early in the season, many doubted Day’s ability to lead the team to success. But with consecutive wins against top-ranked opponents like Penn State and Michigan State, Day has proven that he is more than capable of guiding his team to victory.
The redemption of Ryan Day is not just about winning games, but about his ability to adapt, learn, and grow from his mistakes. His resilience and determination have inspired his team to persevere through tough times and come out on top.
As the Buckeyes continue their journey towards a potential playoff berth, it is clear that Ryan Day is a coach worth rooting for. His redemption story serves as a reminder that success is not always immediate, but with hard work and dedication, anything is possible.
